Hi 🥺 ihope this don't sound weird but i have been thinking of learning the gǔzhēng too 💅 And i was wondering if you have any tips on where to start? And maybe what you like and dislike about learning it? ~Z

definitely not weird, i understand how daunting it is to start learning anything at all ;w; though i'm not sure if i should be giving advice?? given that i'm still a beginner myself ;;;; uhmm maybe i can just ramble a bit about my experience and hopefully that gives some insight on what to expect? (utc because this got kinda long oof)

personally for me, i took an introductory workshop and trial lessons so i can actually try playing it several times before signing up for actual classes and buying the instrument. if it's at all possible, i'd suggest doing this first before making the decision to pursue learning it... i mean, the last thing you want to do is to back out after you spend money (mine was US$600+ and it's the cheapest one; the high-end ones like dunhuang costs US$1000-$2500+... idk where you live so that might not include shipping fees + custom taxes too) and dedicate a space on your home (normal-sized ones are as tall as i am, like 165cm. DON'T buy 'travel sized' ones.... they're more expensive & shorter string = more tension = harder to press which isn't good for beginners apparently) for a guzheng.

also, i have very minimal to no musical knowledge at all, so having an actual teacher helped a lot in my case! having a teacher also helps you a lot to build good habits on your posture, controlling your fingering, and giving advices/corrections specifically for you. the best part to me is that they give you encouragements, so you'll keep going! and you get to see how an expert does it irl, so you have a goal that looks tangible enough to do, yk?

but if getting a teacher isn't plausible for you, then there are online tutorials, of course.... but i can't talk on how good they are, sorry ;w;

likes..... hmmm. i mean, obviously i LOVE the sound of a guzheng. and for me, it's been super fun to learn so far. the instrument has been super engaging and i love how everyone always do a double take whenever the topic comes up in conversations lol plus, coming from someone without musical background, the jianpu notation is a blessing...

oh also, this is such a weird thing.... but i used to really dislike my fingers? i used to think they were so sausage-like and stumpy. but perhaps because i stare at them for so long when i play, i've grown to really like them. they're adorable. whoever my future partner is (if they exist) they better be endeared by how short they are 🤣

as for dislikes.... OH I KNOW. THE NAILS. PUTTING ON THE NAILS ARE SUCH A HASSLE hsldkjfklsdjlfkjsd OK LOOK. LOOK. i too, think that 'huh, can't be that bad' at first. but when you start playing with two hands? IT'S SUCH A HASSLE TO PUT ON AND TAKE OFF 😭 also the tapes always go loose on the ends after like. idk. two sessions? grgrgr annoying >:(
