So these VCRs......
A: Is it just me or do these VCRs kinda leave out a decent sized demographic of the fandom?
P: It's consistent now...
A: Initially it was the hands in the VCRs that made the fans think they were in the screen. You didn't really need to show the hands, honestly. Or it could've taken place in the winter and they are wearing gloves. But the recent VCR for EXO'rDium with them all over the world only shows those of the pale persuasion.
P: With the argument LSM made so long ago about wanting the Western Market to be interested in what his company and South Korea's Entertainment industry had to offer...not sure if this is trying to get that audience to see themselves in the story and part of that world in order to appeal to them or if this is about valuing pale/white skin as the truest symbol of superiority and purity...? Why purposefully seek out white families and children for the most recent EXO'rDium VCR's where EXO is saving the world...? Especially when there are darker skinned people everywhere...even in South Korea...are we not also part of the world..?
A: They had Kai in Egypt standing on the pyramids. That was a missed opportunity. And as can clearly be seen in the segment of Sehun at the Louis Vuitton Fashion Show during Paris Fashion Week, there are POCs everywhere. The female that the reporter questioned about who Sehun was is a WOC. So in these places where you think that you'll see white faces there are POCs there too.
P: So what's the problem SM...?
A: It would've been nice to see representation of the various peoples of Asia as well. Could it possibly be that is not the demographic that you are clamoring for approval from? There was a prime opportunity during 2016 MAMAs. You had Quincy Jones, THE Quincy Jones there and they all dropped the ball. Quincy Jones is like the Godfather. You don't want to be on his blacklist. Back to the VCR...that was a great opportunity to unite the fandom through diversity but that didn't happened. Honestly, it left many feeling excluded. You see it in the comments left under the videos on YouTube, tweets, etc. That VCR could've done what "Promise(EXO 2014)" does whenever EXO-Ls hear it. Reminds us that "We Are One". That it doesn't matter who you are or where you're from we can all come together unified with one mind, one heart.
P: The members...well I'd rather hear it from their mouths than assume but the members seem to really mean that "We Are One" (can't help thinking of the video of OT 12 watching a request video from two of their darker skinned fans on "Global Request Show"...wish there were more moments like that now...)but does the concept team/SM Entertainment as a whole...? It doesn't really look like it. At all. It's probably a wonder to anyone why darker skinned fans still stick around despite the obvious exclusion...
A: That's right. I'm reminded of when we went to EXO'LuXion in New York and they made the comment that they didn't think that so many people would come to the concert. Was it Suho or Chanyeol...? Any way, one of the two mentioned how great it was to see people from different countries, speaking different languages and looking different from themselves coming together because of and supporting their music. And that's what it's really about.
P: I think it was Suho (it sounds like something he would say) though Chanyeol did have the line in "Beautiful" that "Even if you’re a different color, I’m being colored into your world..." I look forward to reviewing those lyrics next Tunesday.
A: Me, too. If you think about it that describes how we feel. "Even though they are a different color, we're being colored into their world." And what a "Beautiful" world it can be.
