Gonna make a post about my thoughts on Redemption Arcs later today because I think there's some nuance missing from that discussion.
#the tldr is that I don't...actually think an aversion to this is as Super Deep™ as 'I Don't Believe People Can Ever Get Better'#obviously some of it is because people love to do black-and-white-thinking during any type of analysis (real or fictional)#and people also love the idea of exaggerated punitive justice (again both irl and in fiction)#so some of it IS purity culture-adjacent stuff yeah. but like...sometimes it just does not make sense to redeem a character#in narrative/thematic context. we also cannot have every story be exactly the same like I'm sorry it does not help the media#landscape or the understanding of the human condition for every single story to be a redemption story that's just as limiting as#anything else
