#and open her up into a bouncy happy dog who was actively seeking him out to continue playing

This was taken an hour after getting back to the hotel post seminar on play.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about play and it's role in relationship building, confidence boosting, and training. Specifically how using play allows one to link the emotions of the dog during training to how it feels about performing that behavior later.
Forte thoroughly enjoyed playing with me and the big improvements the small tweaks the instructor had me make made for him.
Before I brought Forte out I was asked what I wanted to work on. I said his outs because Forte still has a tendency to chew on toys as he's releasing them. But I confessed that I was afraid he'd see a room full of people, start making eyes at everyone and I'd have a hard time convincing him to play with me.
I ended up getting really good in the moment help with his out. But more importantly the entire time I had Forte out he only once sort of drifted away from me once while the instructor and I were talking. Other than that I had Forte's full and enthusiastic attention.
I also got compliments on how into me Forte is and how it's clear I've put a lot of time and effort into our play.

Andrew Bogut, Children, and Click: GOOFY, SILLY, HAPPY,SWEET BOY, WHO LOVES PEOPLE&IS WAGGY WITH OTHER DOGS. A TOTAL LOVEBUG ADORED BY VOLUNTEERS, AND DREAMING OFAFAMILY TOLOVE HIM LOVEABLE LENNOX Id 42185, e 2 Yrs., 56 lbs. of Perfect, Waiting for you, in Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED – 9/27/2018 Wounded jumping out of a bathtub and cutting himself on the soap dish, bundle of love Lennox doesn’t let his injury get in the way of his sheer joy in life. He’s such a sweet boy, gangly, goofy, and completely loveable boy, adored by volunteers because of his wiggly, social ways. He seems to love other dogs, though the poor kid didn’t get to play with the other “kids” in doggy playgroup because of the severe wound on his side, but he sat at the gate, wagging away at the female on the other side. He adores people, and you couldn’t ask for a more handsome, loving friend. As a volunteer writes: “If you looked like Lennox, why wouldn't you love life? He has a large personality and a smile to match. He seems unfazed by his injury or by the fact he has to wear a large plastic collar. He doesn't seem to mind as long as you scratch the right spots (right along his torso and behind his ear for those keeping track at home). His limbs seem to have a mind of their own and make walking or jumping (please see video) sometimes difficult. Lennox is not the most graceful of fellas but he is one of the most lovable, and he is waiting (most likely, awkwardly) for you at MACC.! PRIVATE MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance fostering or adopting Lennox. Being a goofball. 😊 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8QtqiVZlmo LENNOX, ID # 42185, @ 2 Yrs. Old, 56 lbs. Manhattan ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray / White, Unaltered Male Owner Surrender Reason: STRAY Shelter Assessment Rating: EXPERIENCE (Suitable for a family with some previous dog experience) Intake Behavior Rating: 1. GREEN At Risk Memo: Lennox is at risk due to medical condition. Lennox has a large wound on his side that will need regular cleaning and care to prevent infection. We recommend he recover in a home with an adopter who has some dog experience. INTAKE NOTE – DATE OF INTAKE, 9/21/2018: Lenox had a loose body, wagging tail and allowed counselors to rub his back and give him treats. Lenox also allowed to be collared and placed into a kennel. SURRENDER NOTES, BASIC INFORMATION: Lenox is a large mixed breed male, estimated to be 2 years old. Lenox came in today by his owner’s relative, with a medical emergency. Lenox has a large cut on his left side that he received in his home when he was getting a bath, leaped out of the tub, and got cut by a broken soap dish. It is a severely deep wound and shows some muscle tissue. Lennox previously lived with 2 Adults. He is friendly with strangers, loose, and waggy tail. Medical Notes: Lenox has a large cut on his left side that cut him open with a broken soap dish. It is a severely deep wound and his muscle tissue is showing. The incident happened a few hours ago and Lenox is licking it a lot. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Lennox has been highly social with his human caretakers in the shelter environment. He has been soft and social throughout all his interactions with staff and volunteers. He may get jumpy at times but he is food motivated and receptive to training. SHELTER ASSESSMENT – DATE OF ASSESSMENT, 24-Sep-2018 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor's face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Paw squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Paw squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pull back. Flank squeeze 1: Item not conducted Flank squeeze 2: Item not conducted Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy. Summary: Lennox quickly approached the assessor and jumped up in a social manner. He displayed a high level of activity and movement during his assessment, becoming mouthy during tag but applying light pressure and jumping up a lot. He was social throughout and allowed all handling. INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake: 21-Sep-2018. Summary: Loose body, allowed handling MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial: 22-Sep-2018. Summary: Active, social, allowed handling ENERGY LEVEL: Lennox is he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Recommendations: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments: No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control, Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition, Low threshold for arousal Potential challenges comments: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Lennox jumps up a lot on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Low threshold for arousal: Lennox quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Lennox to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be reward with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Lennox. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Lennox has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Lennox's teeth make contact with skin). MEDICAL EXAM NOTES 23-Sep-2018 Tech Exam: As pr Dr. 1516 gently expressed discharge from the wound area, cleaned the area with chlorhex solution, and then cold compressed wound for 5 minutes w/ice pack wrapped in brown paper towel. Being Alone, Anaconda, and Andrew Bogut: Hi, my name is Mueller # 21000- 2-4 yrs old Gorgeous face, affectionate snuggle bug, awesome harness walker, loves dogs, bouncy & layful, full of love and kisses, eautiful brindle…thats me V My hearもis yours Manhattan ACC needs a second chance **** TO BE KILLED – 2/26/2018 **** AWESOME SNUGGLER AND SIMPLY GORGEOUS <3 A volunteer writes: Part playful puppy, part affectionate snugglebug, and 100 percent handsome hunk, Mr. Mueller is a brindle lover's dream come true! You'll always find him waiting right at the front of his den, tail wagging mightily and front paws propped on the door, a welcoming smile lighting up his gorgeous face like spring sunshine. He pulls enthusiastically for the street, but walks well in a harness, meeting other dogs with happy enthusiasm and taking care of all his business along the way before turning the charm on full blast once we stop for our photo shoot. At first, Mueller sits politely to gently mouth reward treats from my hand, but once I give him the 'hug signal' of patting my chest, he's all over me in the best way, cuddling, kissing and loving as only an enthusiastic big boy can. We stay like that for a bit, his paws resting almost on my shoulders as I pet him, and he watches the world go by and then he's off again, snuffly nose to the ground and happy tail reaching for the sky. Mueller aced his behavior assessment with top scores, but his size and jumpy playfulness mean he'd fit best in a home with no little people underfoot, and pet parents who'll make sure he sticks to his best manners–and is rewarded accordingly, of course! I adore Mueller and you will, too. Ask to meet him at our Manhattan Care Center and come prepared to cuddle! Summary: Mueller quickly approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body and jumped up in a social manner. During the assessment, he jumped up a lot and was very mouthy, applying moderate pressure. He was social throughout the assessment and allowed all handling. Summary (1): 2/18: When introduced off leash to the female helper dog, Mueller engages in running play. Summary (2): 2/19: When meeting a familiar female dog, Mueller greets, wanders, then becomes anxious seeking exit. When he sees a female dog in the neighboring pen, he repeatedly snaps at her direction. Date of intake: 17-Feb-2018 Summary: Mueller was social and allowed handling. Date of initial: 18-Feb-2018 Summary: Mueller was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mueller so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: ADULT ONLY HOME Recommendations: No children (under 13) Recommendations comments: No children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Potential challenges comments: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Mueller was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Mueller puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. PLEASE NOTE: You MUST live in NY, NJ, PA, CT, RI, DE, MD, MA, NH, VT, ME or Northern VA. You will need to fill out applications with a New Hope Rescue Partner to foster or adopt a NYC ACC dog. Transport is available if you live within the prescribed range of states. Shelter contact information: Phone number (212) 788-4000 Email [email protected] Shelter Addresses: Brooklyn Shelter: 2336 Linden Boulevard Brooklyn, NY 11208 Manhattan Shelter: 326 East 110 St. New York, NY 10029 Staten Island Shelter: 3139 Veterans Road West Staten Island, NY 10309 * NEW NYC ACC RATING SYSTEM * Level 1 Dogs with Level 1 determinations are suitable for the majority of homes. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

A volunteer writes: Crash! Boom! Bang! That's the sound of you falling head-over-heels for Crash, the most handsome, huggable guy you never knew your life was missing! I like my dogs big, boisterous and a little bossy, and Crash is all those things, but he's also an affectionate snuggler, a sweet kisser and a wonderful friend to other pups in playgroup, too. At the top of his list of not-so-secret joys are toys and balls of all kinds, and he'll sit politely (for a moment at least) to wait for my throw, then dash off, gently scoop up his prize and jog back for another round, smiling all the while. Crash never grabs or guards and is always happy to share if it means the fun and games will continue, and he's so soft and easy to handle, lightly munching away from my hand as I hold a toy for him or quietly settling across my lap for an extended back massage and chew session. He seems very house trained, but his enthusiasm for exploration and meeting new friends does result in some hard pulling on leash. A harness and a little training could teach this smart cookie how to slow his roll, or if you prefer, you can learn to jog! Crash is a lotta dog to love and he's got so much love to give to an active, experienced family. Ask to meet him at our Manhattan Care Center and get ready to fall in love. My vaccinations are up to date. My worming is up to date. I came into the shelter as a returns on 07-Sep-2018. Behavior Assessment Date of intake:: 9/7/2018 Spay/Neuter status:: No Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner Surrender (In home for one week) Bite history:: Yes, Crash bit a person and a dog while he was being walked. He lunged towards a child and the owner's girlfriend got in between the Crash and the child and she was bitten on the hand, breaking skin. He bit a dog that he was meeting while on leash, breaking skin on the dog. Date of assessment:: 8/22/2018 Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor's hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Paw squeeze 1:: 2. Flank squeeze 1:: Item not conducted Flank squeeze 2:: Item not conducted Toy:: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy. Summary:: Crash quickly approached the assessor with a soft body and jumped up in a social manner. He jumped up several times during the assessment and was a bit mouthy, applying light pressure. He allowed all handling. Summary:: Crash may succeed best with slow introductions to other playful dogs. Summary (1):: 8/22: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Crash greets politely, initially is weary of play. Once more acclimated, Crash engages in bouts of play. Summary (2):: 8/23: Crash engages in bouts of running play with a female dog. Summary (3):: 8/24-8/27: Crash engages in running, bouncy play with male and female dogs. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Crash so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: In the care center Crash displays on leash reactivity, pulling towards dogs and people he sees on walks. Prior to his adoption he had not displayed concerning levels of reactivity (hard barking, lunging etc.) but this was reported in the home environment. Since returning he has displayed high levels of reactivity in kennel as well (hard barking, jumping on the fence etc.). One on one with handlers outside Crash is highly social, seeking attention and engaging in play with toy items. He is a high energy dog and benefits from one on one time off leash in the yard with toys and humans. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the reactivity Crash showed on leash towards a child, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Crash's bite history, the behavior department recommends Crash be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Crash to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Crash to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Crash presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Crash jumps up on people a lot in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Crash has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Crash's teeth make contact with skin). On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Crash has been reported to react to people on leash, having lunged at a child, resulting in the owner getting bitten when she got in between. Crash may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. We also recommend conditioning Crash to wearing a basket muzzle so he can wear a muzzle when out in public. My medical notes are... Apparently, Cats, and Children: Absolutely gorgeous, young, happy, riendly, loves toys, an amazing athlete, housetrained, dog Friendly INO aManhattan ACC waiting LOVE 36612-1 years old, 57 lbs **** TO BE KILLED - 8/11/2018 **** GORGEOUS ALERT <3 A volunteer writes: Say "yes" to Nino! If there's a more dashing, dreamy, or darling boy than 1 year-old Nino well I certainly haven't met him. A long-legged vision in cinnamon and cream, Nino is a coltish cutie who will capture your heart. A gingerbread, borough-bred, thoroughbred. Nino is easily leashed and away we go, the wind in our hair and at our backs. And as he trots happily in front of me we swing out into the sun and get down to fun and games, as both are Nino's specialties. And if you happen to have a ball well get ready to...have a ball. Forward, back, up, down! Nino is a sight to behold, so impressive and light, as he plays with a bright, shining smile. Nino is described by his previous owner as excitable and playful. We're also told he's crate-trained, enjoys baths and being brushed, and loves to play with tennis balls which I can certainly attest to be true. As a young, energetic, and devastatingly handsome boy, Nino might do best with an experienced family who'll give our boy plenty of chances and room to stretch his legs and lots of opportunities for play. Andrew Bogut, Animals, and Apparently: Absolutely gorgeous, young, happy, riendly, loves toys, an amazing athlete, housetrained, dog Friendly INO aManhattan ACC waiting LOVE 36612-1 years old, 57 lbs **** TO BE KILLED - 8/10/2018 **** GORGEOUS ALERT <3 A volunteer writes: Say "yes" to Nino! Say "yes" to Nino and then say "no" to days without never-ending fun. Nino is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC. Date of intake:: 8/1/2018 Summary:: Loose body, active, jumping up ENERGY LEVEL:: Nino is described as having a high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Nino jumps up on people a lot in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Nino has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Nino's teeth make contact with skin). * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die.
