Week of Toku Ladies - Day 4: 1989

OUGH. my friend. i am gently putting my hands on your shoulders and looking directly in the eyes and saying THANK YOU for the opportunity to gush about my boyyyyy my favorite boy

okay! so! that's gentarou kisaragi, the protagonist of kamen rider fourze! kamen rider, if you're not familiar, is a japanese action drama series where each season has a different set of characters, powers, suits, and stories, but they're all generally about guys who transform into masked heroes to protect people from monsters and villains. y'know how power rangers uses japanese footage (from super sentai) that's redubbed and has english scenes spliced in? kamen rider is made by the same company that does sentai! just to give you an idea of the Vibes.

now, onto gentarou! fourze aired in 2011-2012, and is my favorite of every kamen rider season i've watched for a number of reasons! gentarou is a new transfer student to amanogawa high school. he dresses like a delinquent, but his goal is to befriend everyone in the school, which makes fourze a very very sweet power of friendship story by the end. he finds that students are being turned into monsters called zodiarts (themed after constellations), and turns into the space-themed kamen rider fourze to save them! along the way, he gains a tight-knit circle of friends, many of whom started off as enemies but were won over by his kindness and support.

the series is both really full of heart and action-packed with excellent fights and creature designs. i'm gonna add a few images below to hopefully really seal the deal but you also may recognize my boy gentarou from a few big tumblr posts like jumping off a bridge for a love letter and this video and this one like my boy goes viral everyone so often just no one knows him.

anyway! i am on my hands and knees now begging you that if you're even a little bit interested in superhero stories, themes of friendship, space, and/or shonen action, you give fourze a shot because it's SO good and i would love for more people to get into kamen rider because it RULES. you can check out the opening here (as well as other kr openings, if you're interested)! okay picture time then this long post is done <3

Quick thoughts about ep 2 (+the opening)

tldr; i wuv rintarou

RINTAROU!! God, I love him. He’s even better than I imagined. I really like how chill and composed he is compared to other secondary riders. He’s... so polite, so considerate, so kind, so calm, so supportive. He’s an ally from the beginning. And I love how awkward he is. God. He’s perfect. I wonder what his character arc will be like?

Mei and Touma are simply adorable, too. I loved the way they interacted with Rintarou, too. Kento has only said “hey, whazzup” so far, but he also seems awfully nice and non-confrontational. I think Saber will be more like Hibiki in the sense that there are many riders but most of them are amiable with one another because they work for the same cause (although I’m sure there’ll be some exceptions down the road).

I like how Touma can apply his outside-the-box thinking into the fights. It’s so cool.

Y’know, I wasn’t really bothered by Tassle or the CGI and the long transformation sequences in the last ep, but this time around I found them kinda annoying. But at least the CGI is doomed to disappear -even if not completely- sooner than later. It must be expensive.

I loved Mei noticing Rintarou has a sweet tooth. I hope we’ll see moments where she shows how sharp she can be.

Mei, the homo sapiens, barged in with her bike and joined Touma and Rintarou in their lil adventure. God, I LOVE HER.

Still thinking about Rintarou. Will he become my fave? Only time will tell. I liked how he wanted to be addressed as “Rintarou-san”, but both Mei and Touma just call him with no honorifics at all. I think their more laidback personalities will be a good influence on him.

The ending was slightly different in this ep! Cute.

BUSTER IN THE NEXT EP! I wonder if we’ll see Espada’s debut as a rider too? I like his suit the most.

Now, the opening:

I love the song and the visuals are cute for the most part, but after a certain point it kinda looks like the visuals and the song don’t match anymore? 

I think this opening will be updated often. For starters, I doubt Kento won’t show up as an adult and out of suit given how important he seems to be (I mean, it wouldn’t be unheard of not to add him, but it’s not the normal thing in KR). I think he’ll be included in the part where the trio walks on a book. It looks like there’s room for one more character. Also, Tassle’s little dance looks like something that will be replaced sooner than later lol I think the scenes where the three riders are fighting will be replaced, too.

Some parts really look Sentai-ish, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I absolutely LOVE the first seconds. Saber really feels like an adventure!

I wonder if we’ll see Mei at work and interacting with her coworkers. I think we could get some fun scenes out of it, and I love to get non-rider supporting characters.

“Faces covered beneath the mask streaming with invisible tears”. Fuck, this sounds so tragic. It looks like some riders will have very sad backstories.

hey y’all it’s kat @powerprincesses’ birthday on MARCH 24TH (but since that’s movie day, i’m giving this to her early) and i, being the dutiful-slash-whipped wife that i am, thought i’d do something special for it and i was like, well, pearl, you’ve already written her shit for the past two years, why not do something different?

so i watched an entire fucking series of japanese power rangers: bug eyes edition for her. can you believe that? me??? watch kamen rider??? i know

but here i am on the other side of kamen rider decade which i watched because a) he’s pink b) kat loves it c) it only has like 30 episodes thank god and d) he’s pink

i have great decision making-skills. anyway below the cut are all my honest unfiltered thoughts on what kat pitched to me as “kamen rider megaforce”. fair warning, it’s long, with pictures, and tailored for kat. read at your own risk.

Kyuranger 1, Ex-Aid 18 and Dragon Blood 6 thoughts (Spoilers)

Well now that Zyuphger has ended, it’s time for the debut of our new Sentai series, but also I decided to add Zero Dragon Blood on here so I can go back to how I’ve done these before. Last TIme: The Zyuohgers defeated Genis for good and said farewell, until the Champion symbol decides to merge both world together again, ending it on a high note. Meanwhile, Ex-Aid tries to protect Tsukuru and Burgmon, but was ultimately destroyed by Genm Zombie. Meanwhile, Alice uncovers the mystery of Marco Jose’s suicide and see why he jumped off a cathedral while Rei saved her from a mechanical lifeform created by Edl to capture her. With all that said, can Kyuranger start off strong? Will Emu find a way to save himself from the Game Disease? and what is Kogome’s true intentions? Let’s find out.

Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger episode 1:

near a playground, Jark Matter invade Earth and kidnap a few children. In Clothos, Jark causes destruction until Hammy, Sparda and Champ arrive to become the Kyuranger to fight Jark Matter.

Elsewhere, Lucky’s hovercraft breaks down and crashes on Lothos, he sees the Kyuranger’s fight and decides to join them. On the Orion, they explain who Jark Matter is and that they must find all nine warriors.

So Lucky looks for the Kyu Globes on JugJug and manages to find one but Garu fights him until the others stop them.  Garu explains how he lost his clan to Jark Matter, who arrives to attack them. 

Lucky is taken by one of the ships and is about to freeze in space, until the Kyu Globe chooses him and he transforms while in a meteor shower. The others join in the battle and the Orion is being attacked

They summon their mechs to defend it. Garu transforms and helps Champ then join the others in forming Kyuren-oh to battle Jark Matter. They cheer at their victory, in Jagama, two people see a wanted poster.

Next Time: silver and gold thieves.

Overall I found this episode to be interesting, we start off our new series with a bang, with them taking place in other planets and planning on starting a trend of having a team of nine as oppose to three to five in previous seasons. So far I liked how they show us some new worlds in this shows universe. I also like how they do what they can to make the planets stand out. So far I’m liking most of the characters, especially Hammy, Champ and Garu, who’s backstory is pretty understandable. I also enjoyed the mech fight in this series with how they handled some nice camera shots. This episode wasn’t perfect though, sometimes the pacing is too fast while other times it gets forgotten. Now to talk about Lucky, I’m not sure how to feel about him yet, he hasn’t fully annoyed me yet, though I feel his whole habit of getting good luck is gonna be used as an excuse for some contrived writing unless they find a way around it. I don’t want to hate this character like I’ve done with previous reds (such as Right and Takaharu), I want to root for him and the team by the end, to see him get some character growth, though thankfully he doesn’t overly yell out his catchphrases (and doesn’t overuse the word kita like Gentaro or Takaharu). Maybe it’s the over hype from everyone else in the fandom, but I’m just not feeling as excitement for this series as I should have, especially since I rewatched Zyuohger and how much of an impact it left from start to finish. But then again this is only the first episode, so they have plenty of time to improve their faults before this series could go downhill but instead rise up. Can’t wait for the next episode, where the Kyuranger’s continue their quest until they encounter two thieves,they get captured and two new Kyuranger appear.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid episode 18:

Tsukuru feels down after Burgmon’s demise, then Dan infects him with a virus.Emu asks Hiro what are they hiding from him, but they get an alert and head to see Kuroto and Tsukuru, who was used as bait.

They fight and Kuroto insults Tsukuru’s game creating skills, which causes Motos to appear and Ex-Aid chases him, but he escapes. Genm defeats Snipe and takes his Gashats.

Tsukuru explains that he’s pressured to create a new game. Taiga calls the others not to have Ex-Aid battle Genm, cause his bodies at his limit. Kuroto explains that KR Chronicle is the ultimate survival game

Kuroto calls Pallad his pawn for him to become the Game master. Motos attacks Genm corporation and Ex-Aid arrives, then Genm appears to use a new Gashat to beat Ex-Aid in one hit while he defeats Motos.

Para-DX fights Genm for being used and beats him. Kuroto decides to maees with Pallad, by telling Emu that he has the Game Disease. it gets to him and he goes beserk. To be continued...

Next Time: Hiro’s final fantasy

Overall I Enjoyed this episode, nice to see this series moving forward story wise. I liked how they’re showing Kuroto Dan more as a big threat, from taking Snipe’s Gashat, to revealing that he’s just using them to get to his goal of being a Game Master (or God himself) and create the ultimate survival game where everyone can become a Kamen Rider and fight to survive (so Ryuki minus the timeline change). I also enjoyed Pallad’s departure and him taking on Genm Zombie by himself and beating him after seeing him defeat Motos and be called pawns, that was the big highlight for this episode IMO, but not even that could defeat Kuroto as he ruins Pallads wish of defeating M by revealing to Emu that he was Patient Zero (the first human to be infected with the Game Disease) and when he finally realizes the connection, the stress gets to him. I also enjoyed the new Taddle Fantasy/Bang Bang Simulations Gashat and how Kuroto uses it to beat Ex-aid in one hit. This series is getting itself back up and I’m interested in what they might do next. Can’t wait for the next episode, where Emu doesn’t care about patients, they wonder what are they going to do with him, Hiro gains the new Taddle Fantasy Gashat in hoping to save Emu.

Zero Dragon Blood episode 6:

Rei battles Kagome, who plans to kill Alice so the Egg can stay in the cage. Rekka stops the fight since she was looking for her. She is brought back to Bakura’s bar where he gets a meal and fangirl on them.

Kagome explains her brother woke Edel as well as her backstory, how they weren’t strong Makai Priests and Okina discovering the book of the Makai Dragon, which died after Edel attacked humans.

Okina read that it left an egg before it died, which gives him the idea to use it’s power to protect others and become stronger. The others decide to help Kagome in her quest. Edel creates another beast to find Alice. 

Alice leaves with a charm that Rekka gave her. Kagome finds her and apologizes, unaware that she unseals the charm and places a barrier on her. Rekka uses a spell to find Edel using the charm.

Kagome realized that she messed up. The beast sees Alice and Edel appears in front of her. Kagome tell them that her barrier will only last two hours, so they must get to her now. To be continued.....

Next Time: Twin swords

Overall I enjoyed this episode, it was about time we got to know more about Kagome and oh boy was it unexpected of her to actually be a fan of Rekka and Rei, I found myself laughing when she was eating a lot to her fangirling. I also enjoyed her backstory and how they explain why they wanted to revive the Makai Dragon and the Dragon Knight so they can use it’s power to become stronger and protect people. I also liked how we get an introduction to Kagome’s companion Hanazumi (who was only seen for a few minutes in previous episodes) and she is used to keep an eye on Alice when Kagome placed the barrier on her. Not much else to say since there’s a few more mysteries, such as what made Edel attack humans centuries ago and what are his true motives. We’re halfway through the series and let’s see if it get’s fleshed out more before it ends. Can’t wait for the next episode, where Rei battles Edel, Rekka and Kagome battle some Mechanical Life forms and the battle escalates to someone getting hurt.
