The Daily Tulip – News From Around The World
Sunday 1st October 2017
Good Morning Gentle Reader….  Sunday, Looking forward to the F1 from Malaysia later today, it being the last race from this country… but we have hours to do things in before that happens.. Bella has fetched her leash and is waiting at the dog for her first walk of the day.. “Hold on a minute and I will be right back”… Here I am, where were we, Ah! The weather… Cool again this morning, it’s the breeze that’s making it feel colder than it is, or is it me, getting older, feeling the cold more.. Still high clouds so I don’t have a heaven full of stars to pratel on about this morning, but the coffee is good and cookies are on the plate.. pull up a chair and let’s look at the news together….
CANADIAN AIRPORT IN INUIT 'ILL-OMEN' ART ROW…. A veteran politician says an installation of traditional Inuit art outside Toronto airport resembles a symbol of ill-omen. Piita Irniq says one of three inuksuks - stone cairns that are sometimes built in a human shape - outside Terminal One of Pearson International Airport was "put together wrong". He says its clearly defined legs and raised arms mean an "area where someone was killed or died by suicide," the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports. He says they should be rebuilt under Inuit guidance or taken down. Mr Irniq's opinion carries weight, as he has been active in the political and cultural life of what is now the Nunavut territory of Canada's far north since the 1970s, and is himself a noted builder of inuksuks. These cairns, also known as inukshuks, were originally used for orientation in the often featureless Arctic tundra. They are of great cultural significant to the Inuit people, and one appears on the Nunavut flag. CBC inspired a lively debate when it put photos of the Toronto inuksuks on its Nunavut Facebook page, with some Inuit readers wonder whether the airport really wants to brand itself as a "place of horrible death". Others express appreciation of the art pieces, or dispute that they are inuksuks in any traditional sense. One wag thinks they may have the local ice hoc
LOST GREEK TEMPLE FOUND AFTER STEPS RECOUNTED…. A group of archaeologists have ended a search lasting more than 100 years for a missing Greek temple, after working out that ancient directions to the site were wrong. In 1964, a Greek and Swiss team began digging at the Eretria site on the island of Euboea, which "other archaeologists had been excavating in vain since the 19th century", Greece's ERT public broadcaster reports. They were looking for a legendary temple to the Goddess Artemis, one of the most widely-venerated deities of Ancient Greece, as described by the geographer Strabo, who died early in the 1st century CE. He said the open-air sanctuary stood seven Greek stades (1.5 km; about one mile) from the site of ancient Eretria. But Swiss archaeologist Denis Knoepfler discovered stones characteristic of Greek buildings of the time had been reused in a Byzantine church, and calculated that Strabo was mistaken, Swiss Radio and Television reports. He suggested a distance of 11 km (6.8 miles) instead. So the team from the Swiss Archaeological School and Greek Archaeological Service switched the dig to a site at the foot of a hill near the small fishing village of Amarynthos. After painstaking work, they discovered a stoa, or gallery, that could have formed part of the temple, and began excavating in earnest in 2012. Their analysis proved correct, when the team finally "cut through the gallery walls this summer to reveal the core of the sanctuary of Amarysia Artemis", the Greek Culture Ministry said. The team has since uncovered buildings ranging from the 6th to 2nd centuries BCE, including an underground fountain, and, crucially, inscriptions and coins bearing the name Artemis - the guardian goddess of Amarynthos. "These confirm that the site was the destination for the annual procession from Eretria by local worshippers of the goddess of the hunt", says the local website EviaZoom.
BELARUS ROW OVER CHURCH BELLS BAN STORY…. Reports that a landmark Catholic church in Minsk has been banned from ringing its bells have caused commotion on Belarusian social media, but may be based on a misunderstanding. Canon Uladzislaw Zavalnyuk, (You try pronouncing that after a glass of Holy Wine!)  the rector of the Church of Saints Simon and Helena, told the Belarusian Christian news site Krynica.info that the city government has ordered the church to stop ringing its bells "because they disturb local residents". The priest professed himself baffled at this. "There are many churches in Minsk with bells, but they're not being banned from ringing them," he complained to the site. Social media users were immediately suspicious of the city's motives. Above all, they note that there are few houses near what is popularly called the Red Church, a red-brick building that stands among government offices on Independence Square. And people nearby seem to have no problems with the bells. Nadzyeya Hatsak, who lives within sound of the bells, says she likes to hear them of a morning. "They give the place a European feel, and you can't even hear them when you close your windows," she told Krynica. The idea that the pro-Russian government favours the Orthodox Church is common in opposition circles, mainly because the Catholic Church is stronger in western, Belarusian-speaking parts of the country, and is also associated with the Polish minority. This allegation of bias underpins much social media comment on the story. 'Orthodox are jealous' "This is blatant injustice. The Orthodox cathedral in Nyamiha district rings its bells right next to a block of flats, but it's the Red Church that's the problem… there's a political and cultural subtext here," writes Anastasia Damanskaya on Facebook. "The Orthodox are just jealous," says another Facebook user bluntly. Others point the finger directly at officials, given that the church is near the seat of government and many ministries. "The bells stop the bureaucrats and city officials from having a nap, or the very sound makes their hands tremble and drop their bribes," writes Viktar Malyezhyk on the Krynica site.
CHELSEA MANNING SAYS SHE WAS DENIED ENTRY INTO CANADA…. Chelsea Manning, the former US soldier jailed for leaking classified information, says she has been denied entry into Canada. Manning has tweeted a letter from the federal government that appears to show that she has been deemed inadmissible for entry. The letter suggests Manning is not allowed in based on her conviction in the US on charges of espionage. She was freed from prison in May after serving seven years of her sentence. Former US president Barack Obama commuted her 35-year sentence before he left office earlier this year but did not pardon her. Under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, a foreign national can be inadmissible on a number of grounds related to "criminality" and "serious criminality". Truth is Stranger than fiction…..
AUSTRALIAN RESTAURANT DRAWS CONTROVERSY OVER HANGING COW…. An Australian restaurant has drawn controversy for hanging a taxidermied cow from its ceiling to raise debate about eating animals. The dairy cow has been strung up by its hind legs over dining tables at Etica restaurant in Adelaide. The challenging installation has sparked a backlash online, where it has been dubbed "obscene" and "disgusting". The owners of the pizza restaurant say the display makes diners think about "the realities" of consuming meat. "The pose of Schvitzy, as she was affectionately known, is purposely confronting. She has not been hung for decoration," Federico and Melissa Pisanelli said in a statement. "The installation has a mission: it aims to draw a connection to the true consequence of consuming dairy." The recently opened restaurant, which serves meat and dairy products, was designed to look like a slaughterhouse with glass walls. After the eight-year-old Friesian-Hereford cow was slaughtered, its meat was "entirely consumed", the owners said.
DURGA PUJA: GOLD SARI AND BIG BEN WOW KOLKATA CROWDS…. The Indian city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) has a long tradition of lavishly celebrating the Durga Puja, an annual Hindu festival that reveres the goddess Durga. It is the biggest and most popular festival in the state of West Bengal, where elaborate stage decorations, known as "pandals," draw huge crowds. During the nine-day festival, thousands of pandals are constructed in almost every neighbourhood in the city. Over the years, they have become a popular display of creativity and grandeur. Photographer Ronny Sen has captured images of one celebration that stood out for its London theme, and for dressing an idol of the goddess Durga in a sari made out of pure 22-carat gold. Weighing 22kg, the gold sari is worth 62 million rupees (approximately $944,000; £705,000). The sari, covered in detailed motifs and shiny gemstones, was made for the occasion by designer Agnimitra Paul. Around 50 artisans worked on the costumes over the course of two and a half months, according to The Indian Express. The idol is found inside a replica of Buckingham Palace, which was made for the festival and is located in the city's Santosh Mitra square. Other installations include lookalikes of London replicas like Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the London Eye. Pictures can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/ROBERTMCANGUSGROUP/
