mundial, mundial i po mundialu...
oh my god, it were a very exciting few weeks, lots of surprises, the big favourites dropping out one after another (except france), little countries reaching to the top. wow. also own goals.
i’ve made a few very subjective unprofesional rankings to sum this up
1. favourite matches:
belgium-brazil
belgium-japan
france-argentina
france-croatia
bonus: korea-germany will always have a special place in my heart because omg not letting germany score for 90 min, then finishing them off with two goals in additional time and dropping them to the bottom of the group table - epic, beautiful, legen-fuckin-dary, will remember this till the end of my life
2. teams that won my heart:
iceland - i love them ever since i “adopted” my viking sons as my team during euro‘16, and maybe they did not qualify to the final 16 this time but they played good and i love them
japan - smol, fast and that match with belgium omg
croatia - exciting, tireless in their will to fight till the end, always turning the match into a thriller, luka madrid!, they are such a smol country but have so many talented players and got so far this year and omg
belgium - always a pleasure to watch, i love the style in which they play and their fast spectacular attacks, also i love their two floofy haired players witsel and podsiadło fellaini the most, but basically the whole team is great
france - definitely the best team this year, wining world cup the second time after exactly 20 years - neat, also griezman, pavard, mbappe, pogba and the iconic duo varane + umtiti
brazil - yeah, sure, it would be good if neymar focused more on playing instead of “acting”, rolling on the grass and weird pasta hairdos but i still love them anyway, they are a good team
colombia - ok i have a soft spot for colombia and this soft spot is called james rodriguez (what a shame he got that injury), also they play really good when they are not wasting time for quarrels
there probably would be more if i was able to watch all the group matches, like i heard that iran was great but i didn’t see any match with them
3. most stylish coaches:
senegal’s aliou cissé - so charismatic, so magical, a human lion, srsly he could play in a movie
england’s gareth southgate - waistcoat + tie, so classy
these two are true style icons and definitely stood out among the average 60+ gray haired coaches. also argentina’s coach stood out but in a really bad style, he looked like a gangster (together with maradona)
4. coolest name:
harry kane
that’s it, everybody else can co home
5. coolest fans:
three england fans dressed as knights aka sir lancelot and his friends
ok, many many fans were great but i will really remember those three.
6. most ridiculous matches:
poland-senegal - really it’s not so much as senegal destroyed us, it was more like poland’s auto-destruction (samozaoranie) and senegal was just at a good place in a good time
poland-japan - yeah the only match we won but in such style that i can’t say we “saved out honour”. i’m glad japan later played that epic match with belgium and they won’t be remembered from these ridiculous last 10 min because they didn’t deserve this and i’m glad they had a chance to say goodbye in a big style
yes, this category was created exclusively for my national team, poland. honesty it was the only team in our group that really didn’t deserve qualifying to the next stage. also isn’t that ironic that the only world cup in which we are deemed the favourites in our group is the one that’s exceptionally unfavourable to all the favourites. maybe we should have gone to russia as the usual weakest in the group, probably also land in the same group as germans, and then maybe we would reach the quarterfinals or something...
ALSO:
7. own goal! this was the world cup of the own goal (cichy bohater o wielu twarzach) and he’s the true best scorer this year
8. the russian team - yeah, while i did not like their style in general (tho they had a few beautiful moments like cheryshev’s goal in quarterfinal with croatia), i’m impressed they reached this far even tho nobody gave them any chances to even qualify to the final 16, they used like 200% of their potential and didn’t waste their chances, made their country proud on their home soil
9. the grass! the grass was spectacular, like a green floofy carpet, and in a perfect condition till the end (i still remember the patches of non-existent grass in the final matches during euro in poland)
10. the super dramatic decoration in the rain, only one umbrella and everyone soaking wet except for putin
11. finally var! i’m really glad fifa finally allowed the referees to use video replays and they didn’t make glaring mistakes anymore and the game could be fair. so yeah, good to see fifa finally realizing we have xxi century
12. i hope luka modric will also get that other golden ball too because this whole messi or rolando got boring, also it would be nice if it was awarded to someone who’s not a forward for a change
so yeah, world cup is over, time to forget about football for another 2 years.
