lanque is an alcoholic, and a notoriously heavy drinker! being in his body will render you susceptible to the symptoms of withdrawal. i’ll admit, i don’t really have any experience with this personally or second-hand but whenever i’m considering incorporating it in rp i use this as a timeline/point of reference.
this behavior likely won’t stop when he’s in your muse’s body, since it’s both a physical and psychological dependence. he’ll likely spend most of your muse’s dust on booze. have fun being broke and super hungover when you get back!
it’s cold as fuck and trolls are extremely sensitive to cold. as lanque, you’ll need more than a couple of layers to deal with it.
lanque has half of his strength back, and as a result he’ll be able to lift 500 lbs at maximum with relative ease. your muse probably won’t realize this until they actually... need it. he doesn’t really give a fuck about this.
you’d be surprised at how structured lanque’s schedule is! you’ll probably have a compulsion to do certain things at certain times! (go through his skin care routine every morning, go to the gym every other morning, hit up a club every night, walk around fibonacci in the evening after work, etc)
lanque claims that he’s never tired, but it’s honestly because he’s used to constantly feeling a little groggy all the time. your muse will definitely feel this, but if they try to sleep they’ll have a hard time. (on the schedule thing, his internal clock has him sleeping at 4am and waking up around 8 or 9am)
social life

honestly the most important thing imo to think about when it comes to this event is that lanque’s home life is not even close to what you would expect. his room is spotless and tidy. he has a variety of expensive skin care products lined up in his personal bathroom. he has bolts of fabric next to his closet filled with hand sewn suits, a sewing machine, and a corner of his desk has his favorite books standing upright.
among these books is a book filled with extremely emotional and sensitive handwritten poems. (it’s hidden by a booksleeve of bram stoker’s dracula.) your muse will know exactly where this is the second you get to his room, and lanque will be doing everything in his power to find you and stop you from reading any of it.
lanque is stupid rich from his escort service and camming. i still need to make a post on the logistics of it, but there will be a lot of money available to spend on whatever. burn his account, go stupid, go crazy.

The focus of this week is sustainability as it has to do with environmental sociology/demographics with respect to population and consumption as well as sustainable urban planning, design, and engineering of cities (Prof’s PowerPoint). In its chapter on how the human population has impacted the environment, Miller discusses the carrying capacity of our planet to support and sustain an increasing population of humans, as well as the non-human species and ecosystem services that an increasing population will only become even more reliant on. It's not as simple as this; however, because carrying capacity only relates to how many people the planet can support sustainability. A better and more realistic term for this is cultural carrying capacity, which is “the maximum number of people who could live in reasonable freedom and comfort indefinitely without decreasing the ability of the earth to sustain future generations” (Miller 2012, 128). This takes into account the mass differences in comfort levels and livelihoods across the planet and somewhat equalizes the concept by adding the notion of “reasonable freedom,” meaning that a change would and will have to occur in the top consumer countries who are enjoying an unreasonableamount of freedom and comfort in how they use/waste resources.
This is explicated perfectly in the “More Than Money - What Is ‘The Good Life’” parable where a business man encounters an independent fisherman and explains to him how he could expand his practice into a profitable Capitalistic enterprise and ultimately become very rich, of course at the expense of his leisure time spent with his family until he can finally retire. The fisherman rejects this idea on the basis that the eventual payoff decades from now is exactly what his life is like now, after he spends a few hours a day fishing to support this payoff. This is in contrast to the Capitalist route which demands that one makes work their entire purpose, and identity so that they can enjoy their life down the road, only after they’ve completely exhausted their bodies (Koehler 2008). A result of such Capitalistic greed was that people seemed to forget that they really don’t need much to survive and be happy. Such is part of the reason for the massive gap in quality of life between the developed and developing countries, that while history shows that people can thrive simply off the land, resources and subsistence labor, capitalism has used up a superfluous portion of these resources, which are also impacted by climate change which not only destructs these resources through natural disaster but can pose challenges to agriculture that relies on climate consistency.
One can literally watch the world population approach 8 million using the “Current World Population” tool (Worldometers). One can also watch the U.S. population increase which is obviously much slower with only one birth every eight seconds but does give insight into why it is important to help fuel the development of underdeveloped countries in order to stunt population growth (Census Bureau). The “World Death Clock” website estimates that because the world population growth rate is so disproportionate to the death rate, we are on track to double the population every three decades (MD India). Miller describes the three most effective methods of slowing this growth: “reducing poverty, elevating the status of women, and encouraging family planning” (Miller 2012, 126). All three methods require that we work to increase the livelihoods of impoverished countries that are largely experiencing the oppositeextreme of what is an unreasonable level of comfort and freedom. In other words, developed countries are for the most part too comfortable and will need to make sacrifices in order to level the global playing field. This relates to the political and economic movement known as “Degrowth” which, in its response to the “limits-to-growth” dilemma we are facing, advocates “for the downscaling of production and consumption - the contraction of economics” on the basis that “overconsumption lies at the root of long term environmental issues and social inequalities” (Wikipedia 2019).
In response to Miller’s Critical Thinking Question #9 of Chapter 22 on the three most important components for dealing with urban growth and sustainability in more developed and less developed countries, I would argue that two of the three can apply to both, the first component is low cost/high incentive green methods. In more developed countries this would involve giving better tax breaks/rebates to businesses and individuals for installing things like solar panels and green roofs and in less developed countries for installing things like clean cook stoves that use zero-waste biomass instead of wood and charcoal which pollute and burn faster. The second component would be more efficient and accessible mass transit because in more developed countries this would reduce the cars on the road and in less developed countries it would make it easier for people to either live in or commute to cities where there are more job and education opportunities. The last component for more developed countries would be to implement stricter building/energy codes, regulations and penalties to encourage buildings to modernize and install more environmentally friendly appliances. The last component for less developed countries would be to create more compelling pull factors to the city to reduce reliance on subsistence labor and agriculture such as the promise for better jobs, education, and health care.
Artist Chris Jordan’s two projects, “Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait” and “Running the Numbers II: Portraits of Global Mass Culture” depict consumerism in a very effective way by employing our visual senses to communicate just how much we over-consume. One of the most effective pieces, in my opinion, is the “Caps Seurat” which combines 400,000 plastic bottle caps to recreate Seurat’s beloved, “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte” or the painting of Venus that is made out of 240,000 plastic bags (Jordan 2011). My internship does something by way of environmental art where, each of its individual city branches create something representative of that city out of recycled material, for example, Seattle and salmon, and for the New York City branch we are planning to create a blue bird, which is the New York State bird. Another visual project is “The Impossible Hamster,” a comical yet effective video that describes how Capitalist economies have grown to unnatural sizes and as a result are using up the world’s resources (New Economics Foundation 2018). This is in stark contrast to another economic movement known as the “Steady-State Economy” which is capitalist by nature but instead of continually increasing its capital, it instead has a constant stock of capital relative to a constant population size, which prevents the economy from growing (Wikipedia 2019).
Unfortunately, capitalist economies do not function this way and are actually quite oppressive as is furthered by the video which explains how such an economic system fuels inequality and depletes the environment, its central message being that a reformed and improved economic system that reduces poverty is essential to reversing climate change. If reducing poverty is in the best interest of the environment then it is also in the best interest of the systems and institutions that depend on the environment, such as the economy (New Economics Foundation). The “Visualizing a Plenitude Economy” video also discusses this; specifically, that increasing workplace conditions such as reducing work time by hiring more people will benefit the economy as it will not only reduce poverty but increase worker happiness and concentration which fuels productivity (Center for a New American Dream 2011). As discussed last week, reducing poverty by giving more people jobs will benefit the environment as it will also slow down population growth because, for example, there will be less need for families to have so many children for the purpose of more subsistence labor. Pictured below is an excellent visual representation of the inverse relationship between poverty and development of some of the wealthiest and most developed countries. It should be reiterated that such development is rooted in a reduction in the population growth rate due to methods such as education for women and family planning.

Miller’s chapter on city sustainability explains the advantages and disadvantages of urbanization, which is “the growth of urban and suburban areas” (Miller 2012, 587). The main advantage of urbanization is that cities promote economic development and innovation, and thus create jobs. Moreover, people who live in cities tend to have longer life spans and lower infant mortality rates as well as better access to “medical care, family planning, and education.” Cities also tend to have more effective and comprehensive recycling programs and “concentrating people in cities helps to preserve biodiversity by reducing the stress on wildlife habitats.” Lastly, cities have a lot of energy conservation opportunities given that in many cities it is often faster and more convenient to take mass transit, walk, or bike than to drive. However, cities also have disadvantages, most notably their large ecological footprints. Miller writes, “although urban populations occupy only about 2% of the earth’s land area, they consume about 75% of it resources and produce about 75% of the world’s climate changing CO2 emissions from human activities” (Miller 2012, 593). This calls for a greater emphasis of sustainability and sustainable urban design in city infrastructure and agendas.
For example, former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYCwas a strategic plan that joined several agencies together to help create a greener city by combatting climate change through mitigative methods such as reducing the city’s carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The plan was in part a response to the New York City Panel on Climate Change’s statement that announced that the city could expect an increase of at least one million people over the next two decades. In contrast, its adaptivemeasures are geared more towards promoting resiliency through sturdier infrastructure by repairing and improving bridges, mass transit, buildings, etc. Another project implemented byPlaNYCdiscussed in an Environmental News Network article reduces the waste from food that it sent to landfills by converting it into energy to heat homes. The article explains, “The biogas by-product will be converted into renewable natural gas for both residential and commercial use through a partnership with National Grid” (ENN 2013). The second partnership is with the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant which adds the organic food waste to sludge to facilitate the production of biogas which is then turned into a renewable product, this is a prime example of a totally sustainable and zero waste way to implement sustainability into a city’s agenda. To better understand how this project significantly reduces emissions, the article explains that it is the “equivalent of removing nearly 19,000 cars from city streets” (ENN 2013). PlaNYC is still very much relevant, although its name was changed to OneNYC and updated to reflect the state of the environment today under current Mayor De Blasio (Wikipedia 2019). Another example of a resiliency project is Transition Townwhich promotes self-sustainability within largely cities “to reduce the potential effects of peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability” (Wikipedia 2019). Under the current administration, I think it's becoming increasingly important that cities and states implement protective measures again potential or future climate disaster in the event that the federal government fails to provide sufficient aid, like it has with other countries who have faced recent devastation (e.g. Puerto Rico).

How Nepal got the electricity flowing

KATHMANDU, NEPAL--For years, Hemkumari Chaulagain dreamed of getting a good night’s sleep. She didn’t mind rising early to receive predawn deliveries at her small shop in Kathmandu, Nepal. What wore her down was powering up the water pump each night to ensure the water storage tank atop her home stayed filled.
The exact hour that she did this depended on the rolling blackout schedule enforced by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the country’s power distribution monopoly.
“Sometimes I needed to wake up at midnight, at other times at 2 in the morning. For a decade, I didn’t sleep properly,” says Mrs. Chaulagain, whose tiny convenience store is tucked into the capital’s Bishalnagar neighborhood.
Last winter, her family had only 12 hours a day with electricity. But because she and her husband had invested $500--two months’ worth of his salary as a police officer--in an inverter, or power backup device, they had power to light their house and even watch television during blackout hours. Still, it wasn’t enough for the water pump motor.
Then suddenly, in October, the power came on in full.
Chaulagain has slept seven hours a night since then. She’s delighted, but also at a loss--like many others--to explain what happened. No official word was forthcoming.
“They were hiding electricity until now,” she surmises.
Far-fetched though it may sound, her guess is not far from the truth. All it took was the right engineer--and a government desperate to show its people progress--to uncover and dismantle a web of corruption that was stealing power from households for nearly a decade and distributing it round the clock to some industries.
This Himalayan nation, sandwiched between India and China, has water resources that can generate about 80 times the electricity it needs today, according to a generally agreed estimate that Nepal’s total potential is 83,000 megawatts.
In the century since construction of the Pharping Hydropower Station--the nation’s first and South Asia’s second--Nepal has been able to harness just 900 MW of that potential for reasons ranging from political instability to cost. As a result, Nepalis have long accepted that rationing is unavoidable.
But NEA insiders say that’s not the case. According to them, those at the helm of the state-run monopoly exaggerated for years a largely manageable power crisis. Their aim was to create a market for inverter importers and the alternative energy lobby, which in return lined the pockets of their benefactors.
“To my knowledge, this has happened at least for the past seven years,” says a senior NEA official who asked to remain unnamed because of the subject’s sensitivity.
He says that during every monsoon s a forecast was prepared that exaggerated demand and suppressed supply figures. A deliberately inflated energy shortfall was publicized for the following winter.
Explaining the shortfall to the public was easy: During a 10-year armed Maoist insurgency that ended in 2006, generation did not keep pace with rising demand because violence scared away investors.
Trusting a forecast that the media publicized without rigorous examination, many consumers braced for winter by purchasing expensive power backup systems, including inverters and solar panels. According to one estimate, about one-third of the NEA’s 3 million customers installed systems at their homes and offices in the past decade.
The drain on supply is significant: Not only does the use of inverters increase the load when electricity is available, as people are using electronic devices and charging the inverters at the same time, but 30 percent of the energy is also lost between the time an inverter is charged and the time it powers light electronic devices during blackouts.
Meanwhile, the senior NEA official says, the utility secretly supplied excess power, which was sometimes as much as 40 MW or 4.5 percent of the nation’s total generation, to some industries on a 24-hour basis, giving them undue advantage over competitors who had to power their factories during blackout hours using diesel. Electricity generated by diesel units is three times as costly as the electricity the NEA sells.
“For each megawatt of power illegally supplied to an industry, the beneficiary was saving up to 10 million rupees ($91,000) a month in energy cost. Multiply that by 40, and you will understand how much money these people had at their disposal to pay monthly retainers to NEA officials,” the official adds.
But when a new power broker took the helm, things changed dramatically.
Last September, the government of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda, who took office the previous month, appointed Kul Man Ghising as the NEA’s managing director.
Mr. Prachanda, who is also chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist-Center) and was a guerrilla leader in the Maoist insurgency, served as prime minister for nine months after his party’s stunning win in 2008. But having failed to deliver on all their insurgency-era utopian promises and been hit hard in 2013 elections, the Maoists now want to improve living standards ahead of general elections scheduled for early 2018.
With the NEA catering to nearly half of the nation’s 28 million people, it was a perfect target.
Prachanda gave Mr. Ghising full authority to try to solve a problem that sharply constrains a country trying to boost living standards and deal with numerous other challenges, including the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in 2015.
Ghising, an electrical engineer with strong demand-management skills, took just weeks to end blackouts in the capital and 10 adjoining districts. Earlier this month, he ended blackouts in Pokhara, the nation’s second-largest city, as well as half a dozen adjoining districts.
“Ghising took back electricity that some industries were enjoying illegally and distributed it equitably to consumers,” says Bikash Thapa, one of the best-known energy journalists in Nepal. “It helped that he understands the country’s energy scenario inside out. It also helped that the current prime minister and Energy minister are desperate for results, and Ghising is someone who understands the energy sector very well.
“Most importantly,” he adds, “Ghising’s integrity made the difference.”
“All I am doing is managing demand and supply with maximum efficiency and complete honesty,” Ghising says. “Now, no one is getting electricity that belongs to someone else.”
There was resistance, to be sure, but Ghising benefited from Prachanda’s full political backing. Last month, the Energy Ministry, led by Janardan Sharma from Prachanda’s Maoist party, sacked three NEA board members on charges of not cooperating with Ghising in his campaign to solve the country’s energy crisis.
While that sent a strong message to those openly working to block Ghising’s initiatives, others at the NEA welcomed Ghising’s initiatives, largely buoyed by the sudden positive change in the public image of an institution whose employees had long been seen as inefficient and incompetent.
Ghising, who has been associated with the NEA for 23 years, has boosted the power supply by optimizing power-plant operations. He says the plants are now generating about 25 percent more power than they did last winter, which has translated to about 100 MW of additional power.
He has also discontinued the practice of providing uninterrupted power to select industries. This has freed up another 250 MW of power during peak hours.
“Today, no industry gets electricity from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., when national demand soars to its maximum. On the flip side, this means all industries are getting power for 20 hours a day,” Ghising says.
The sudden disappearance of blackouts has also saved another 50 MW of power, since consumers in major cities are not backing up their inverters anymore.
“Inverter load in the nation stood at 100 MW in the past. By ending blackouts in Kathmandu and Pokhara, this has at least halved,” Ghising says.
All these efforts have added 400 MW of power during peak hours, when national demand surges to 1,350 MW. With 600 MW being currently generated by hydropower projects and 330 MW being imported from India, the deficit of about 400 MW has been almost met.
“The situation was so hopeless in the past that people forgot small things do add up and result in change,” Ghising says.
Districts in eastern Nepal are currently getting round-the-clock power, while districts in western Nepal are facing as many as two hours of blackouts on alternate days.
But that is only because Nepal’s power system is not fully integrated. Several power systems are operating in the nation in isolation, making it impossible for excess energy in one system to be transferred to another.
Understandably, businesses dealing in inverters and solar panels aren’t as happy.
“Sales of inverters dropped by 98 percent since blackouts ended in October,” says Anoor Tuladhar, who retails inverters in the Putalisadak neighborhood of Kathmandu. “The few who are still buying inverters are hospitals, hotels, and party palaces. They need the units for emergency use.”
On the other hand, small businesses that cannot function without electricity are jubilant.
Roshan Chaudhary, manager of an iron grill factory in Bishalnagar, says his operating cost has gone down in recent months.
“Until October, we were using a diesel generator that consumed 10 liters of diesel a day. We no longer need it. Production has increased, and we have added four workers in the past two months,” Mr. Chaudhary says.
Ghising, who has become a national hero, is aiming for what was unthinkable until a few months ago: a blackout-free Nepal.

How To Manage Your Sleep Problems
Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which one has difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting quality sleep. According to a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, one in four Americans develop insomnia each year, but fortunately, about 75% of these individuals recover without developing persistent insomnia while the other 25% progress to acute insomnia.
People over the age of 60 tend to experience sleep disturbances more often than younger people. Females are also twice as likely to have sleep problems compared to males. There are a multitude of possible causes for insomnia, including:
emotional stress,
mental health disorders, such as depression or anxiety,
chronic pain,
allergies,
asthma,
heart failure,
hyperthyroidism,
heartburn,
menopause,
restless leg syndrome,
circadian rhythm disruptions, such as jet lag or working night shifts,
sleep apnea,
certain medications,
caffeine,
heavy smoking, and
excessive alcohol intake.
Insomnia is agonizing, exhausting, and frustrating. Some people turn to sleeping pills, either over-the-counter or prescription, which may help improve sleep while you are taking them. But insomnia usually returns once they are stopped because medications do not treat the underlying causes of insomnia.
Melatonin is a natural sleep hormone that is sold as a supplement. It is helpful for occasional sleep problems and jet lag. Individuals who report that melatonin does not work often make the mistake of taking too high a dose of several grams. Very often, as little as 300 mcg is already sufficient. Always start with the lowest dose before increasing the dosage. It is also beneficial to get the “timed release” melatonin as it will help you stay asleep longer. However, melatonin also does not address the underlying causes of insomnia.
A more successful approach to insomnia is to improve sleep hygiene and make lifestyle changes in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy. Dozens of studies have proved that this strategy is extremely helpful in treating insomnia. In the following, we will examine these techniques in more detail.
Sleep Hygiene And Lifestyle Changes
Sleep-Promoting Habits
The goal is to help you fall asleep more easily, wake up less often and for shorter periods of time, and fall back to sleep more easily.
Regular rising time. Set an alarm clock and get out of bed around the same time every day, no matter how little or poorly you have slept. Do not try to sleep in on weekends because by doing so, you will disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm.
Reducing time in bed. Do not go to bed early because you did not sleep well the prior night. This will actually exacerbate insomnia. Determine your earliest allowable bedtime by starting from your desired wake-up time and subtracting the amount of time you want to stay in bed. The time in bed is your average sleep time plus 1 hour and can range from a minimum of 6 hours to a maximum of 9 hours. If you sleep on average 5 hours or less at night, your time in bed should be 6 hours. If you sleep 8 hours, your time in bed should be 9 hours. In other words, your time in bed should closely match the amount of sleep you are averaging per night. The purpose is to avoid the bed becoming a cue for wakefulness more than a cue for sleep. For insomniacs who are already exhausted, the hardest part is to stay awake until the allowable bedtime. Try to engage in a light activity and refrain from going to bed. As you start to sleep better and more hours, you can move the allowable bedtime earlier.
Wind down gradually in the hour before bedtime by engaging in relaxing activities. Avoid stimulating activities such as phone calls, arguments, emotional discussions, work-related activities, surfing the internet, bill-paying, or unpleasant TV programs.
If you need to nap after a poor night of sleep, limit your nap to 45 minutes and do not take it later than 4 pm.
Stimulus-Control Methods
The purpose is to help insomniacs unlearn the connection between the bed and insomnia.
Use the bed only for sleep and sex. No watching TV, working, studying, playing video games, or talking on the phone. If reading a book or watching TV helps you fall asleep, set a timer to turn off the light or TV after 30 minutes.
If you cannot fall sleep within 30 minutes or if you awaken during the night and cannot fall back to sleep within that time, get up, go to another room, or sit in bed and engage in a quiet and relaxing activity such as reading a book or watching TV until you feel drowsy. Do not lie in bed tossing and turning.
Lifestyle Factors
Engage in some form of physical activity every day. Apart from going to the gym, you can also include activities like washing the car, mowing the lawn with a non-riding mower, raking leaves, climbing stairs, bicycling, walking uphill, etc. These activities can be broken up into several shorter sessions but they should add up to at least 30 minutes each day. However, it is best not to exercise up to 3 hours before bedtime.
Get some sunlight exposure during the day. If you work indoors, go outside on your coffee break or lunch hour. This will help regulate the body’s melatonin (sleep hormone) production and improve sleep. It will enhance your mood and energy as well.
Drinking 1-2 cups of coffee early in the morning probably will not affect nighttime sleep. However, if you do not sleep well, you should avoid caffeine after noontime.
If you smoke and cannot quit, try to eliminate smoking near bedtime or at night. Nicotine is a stimulant and it will make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.
If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink at least 2 hours before bedtime. Nightcaps are not a cure for insomnia. Alcohol makes it easier to fall asleep but it can make sleep lighter and more fragmented. It also suppresses deep sleep and exacerbates snoring and sleep apnea.
Food & Sleep Connection
Foods that are high in complex carbohydrates (eg. peas, beans, oats, quinoa, brown rice) have a mild sleep-enhancing effect because they increase serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter that promotes sleep.
Foods that are high in protein inhibit sleep by blocking serotonin.
To fall asleep more easily and have less nighttime awakenings, try eating a light carbohydrate snack before bedtime.
Avoid foods that are high in sugar as they can cause a burst of energy.
Avoid foods that are likely to cause heartburn or any digestive discomfort.
Avoid eating late dinners.
Reduce fluid intake after 8 pm.
Studies found that deficiencies in B vitamins can impair sleep. Consider taking a B complex supplement if you think that your diet may be lacking in nutrients.
Establishing The Optimal Sleep Environment
Room temperature can have a significant impact on sleep. Insomnia is associated with a failure of body temperature to fall at bedtime. So sleeping in a warm room will make it even harder for the body temperature to drop. The optimal temperature for sleep is between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit (or 16 to 19 degrees Celsius).
Keep the bedroom completely dark and quiet. In general, insomniacs tend to be more sensitive to noise. Older people whose sleep is lighter as a consequence of aging are also more prone to noise-induced sleep disturbance.
Some individuals are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) than others. If so, removing electronic devices from the bedroom can reduce the stimulation caused by EMFs.
Make sure your bed is comfortable and provide adequate support. Beds that sag can disturb sleep by causing neck and back discomfort, while mattresses that are too hard can cause discomfort for people with arthritis.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Insomnia (CBT-I)
CBT-I aims to treat chronic sleep problem by changing the thoughts and behaviors that cause or worsen sleep problems with habits that promote sound sleep.
Relaxation Training
Stressful life events are the most common precipitators of chronic insomnia. Most insomniacs and even some good sleepers have a harder time sleeping on stressful days. Studies have documented that increased daytime stress is correlated with reduced deep sleep, which results in lighter, more restless sleep.
Fortunately, we all have an inborn tool within us that can overcome these stress responses. It is called the Relaxation Response (RR), which simply put, is using the mind to control the body.
How To Induce The RR
Lie down or sit comfortably. Relax all the muscles throughout the body by starting from the head spreading to the toes or vice versa.
Engage in slow, deep abdominal breathing.
Direct your attention from everyday thoughts to a neutral word such as calm, peace, relax, heavy or whatever you choose. Repeat the word silently. Or you can visualize an enjoyable, relaxing scene such as a beach, a mountain, a meadow, or floating on a cloud.
If your mind wanders or negative thoughts come in, literally say “no thoughts” a few times. Then go back to your word or scene and continue with the deep breathing.
Practice the RR everyday, either in the morning or afternoon. Allot 10-20 minutes for the RR. If you fall asleep, it is fine. However, do not practice the RR 1-2 hours before bedtime as it may affect your sleep.
When you get better at doing the RR during the day, you can try using it at night to fall asleep or after a nighttime wake-up. If you do not fall asleep within 30 minutes. Get up or sit up in bed and engage in a light activity. Do not lie in bed tossing and turning.
Be realistic and be patient. For some insomniacs, it takes up to a few weeks before their sleep improves.
Why The RR Improves Sleep
When practiced during the day, it counters daily stress responses, reducing the likelihood that stress hormones will be elevated at night.
When practiced at bedtime or after an awakening, it helps turn off the internal dialogue, quiet the mind, and relax the body.
RR produces a brain-wave pattern similar to Stage 1 sleep, which is the transition state between waking and sleeping. When insomniacs practice the RR at night, it is easier to enter Stage 1 sleep and ultimately Stage 2, deep sleep, and dream sleep.
How To Overcome Negative Self-Talk
Last but not least, negative thoughts during the day or at bedtime play a powerful role in stimulating wakefulness and causing insomnia. Certain negative thoughts and emotions are normal responses to stressful situations, such as grieving after a death. However, some negative emotions such as worry, anxiety, frustration, and anger are unnecessary, excessive, and unhealthy. They trigger stress responses that adversely affect sleep. Therefore, it is beneficial to eliminate or restructure these negative thoughts that cause more stress.
Become more aware of negative self-talk. Catch yourself doing it or better, write them down and review them at the end of the day.
Realize that most of these thoughts are either not true or overly negative and pessimistic.
Reflect on past experiences and ask yourself: “Has anything like this happened to me in the past and if so, how did it turn out?” Most likely, we tend to worry too much and things seldom turn out as badly as we imagined.
Reframe your negative thoughts and focus on positive beliefs.
Do not generalize a problem to your whole life. View setbacks as temporary.
Avoid blaming yourself for things beyond your control.
Refrain from dismissing positive events as temporary or due to luck or external causes.
Practice gratitude everyday.
Seek out optimists and avoid pessimists. Both optimism and pessimism are contagious.
Hopefully, by incorporating healthy sleep hygiene and making lifestyle changes as well as cognitive behavioral therapy, we can all say goodnight to insomnia!

Many people say that they feel more tired after naps and it seems to disturb their sleeping pattern even more.
If you are thinking the same then do not worry as i have got you covered.
There are two problems if I have the aforementioned concerns.
The first problem is related to the duration of the nap.
If you are sleeping more than 45 min or 1 hour then it is not a power nap girl. Why?
Because after that time you will enter into a deep sleep.
By entering into the deep sleep stage during the day, you will experience trouble sleeping at night.
The second problem is related to the tiredness after the nap.
Know it is absolutely normal to feel a bit lethargic right after waking up because your body temperature has dropped a little by then.
But bear in mind that the drowsy period is only temporary.
You will get past the drowsiness after a few minutes of waking up after nap.
But if you want a quicker energy gain then resort for outdoors.
Get a bit of sunlight and do a bit of physical movement.
If you have been underestimating the power of short naps then now is the time to try yourself.
If taken according to the blueprint mentioned above, you will surely find yourself loaded with energy.
4. How to get more energy during the day-Proper Hydration
I really used to take the advice of drinking 8 glasses of water as just an advice.
I never religiously followed it.
But if I would have then it would have ensured an easier body rhythm to follow.
Didn’t get what I meant?
With more consumption of water you will be making it easier for the body temperature to rise and fall correctly.
Sally gets up at 8 am and then keeps staring at her ceiling for the next 30 minutes.
Yes, it is her “rest” time, she does not jump out of the bed straight away.
Then she drives for office, stopping for coffee (500 mg of caffeine) along the way.
At work, she works 7 hours straight in the office.
(I know you will be shocked to hear the lazy ass working! haven’t met her yet? She is here.)
Upon returning home, she hops on the couch and watches some series. . . during which she dozes off for two hours. . .
Finally she wakes up hungry at 8 pm so cooks.
After eating, Sally does all the chores before dozing off to bed at 12 30 am.
She gets to sleep for 7 hours and 30 minutes. . . yippieeeee!
But guess what her life story is ? Guess what her day gets described as?
Unrested, lazy and drowsy.

Sally is questioning how to have more energy and motivation. She is always lacking energy despite sleeping for a good duration.
Why?
Because she works indoors – not sufficient exposure to natural sunlight which promotes melatonin levels and makes her sleepy, and unmotivated.
Because she doesn’t put any physical demands on her body and this decreases her body’s demand for a deep quality sleep.
She is not getting proper hydration – coffee is making it unlikely to get 2 liters of water consumption.
Her naps are not power naps.
Final Words For How to get more energy during the day
Before you go Know This Secret
When you will be changing the whole system, go for the gradual changes.
Do not go for drastic changes as this will not help you set a system in the long run.
This is definitely not the approach for how to keep yourself awake.
Go for the changes that you could consistently follow.
By the whole phenomena of body temperature you must have gotten the idea of how you have an inner sleep clock installed.
Thus, it is exceedingly vital to adjust to the schedule.
Let your body temperature align with your time and that could only happen if you could ensure the functioning of a body rhythm.
Once you establish the rhythm , you will not feel drowsiness.
The guide does not want to accomplish just an early morning.
Anyone can set up an early alarm and drink litres of coffee.
The real accomplishment is when you will find it extremely easier to stay awake for longer.
When you will feel fully energized in the late hours.
Lastly you might question how to stay awake after no sleep or how to get through a school day without sleep . . . i will not advise you to go all sleepless. As this is not going help you in way.
Rather go for a healthy sleep reduction and remain energized all day through the methods mentioned above.

How to Manage Time Wisely? | Lists to Make to Stay Organized
Wondering what you can do in 24 hours to organize your life?
Actually a lot. There are several practical steps that you can start taking from today.
This organization is surely important for a healthy lifestyle.
Previously, whenever my goals for the day were left done, I used to wish for more than 24 hours in a day.
It was very late that I realized that the inclusion and exclusion of small simple tasks can actually make the wish come true.
I still have 24 hours a day, but guess what changed? My activities.
No matter how proficient or intelligent one is, but if one lacks organizational skill then one will not reach favorable and optimum outcomes.
The first step which you can take towards self-improvement is becoming mindful of time management. I am now more mindful and you can be too.
Literally, I used to be a night owl. Now I do not even need an alarm for waking up at 4.
What changed. I learned. I learnt from the experts.
I invested in myself for a better life.
I have taken several audio books, best e-books and courses.
I loved the investments because when I see myself now: I have just more time for everything.
I used to rant that why God has just given 24 hours in a day.
My to-do list always used to get shifted on the next day.
And most importantly I was compromising fun in my life.

1# Planning your day
You need to plan but do not plan excessively.
Do not overwhelm yourself with the large endless to-do list else you will be forced to sleep with an awful mood.
Many people love to Plan your day the night before while some prefer right after waking up.
I mostly do it the night before so that when I hit the bed, my mind could get rid of the planning mode.
But the choice is completely yours.
Create Separate a List For Future and Today Tasks Maintain two different to-do list
There should be a grand list where you can dump every goal you need to accomplish
Drill in your head that you are not a superhero so PRIORITIZE
Go narrower with at least 3 milestones in today’s to-do list (Plan maximum of three large tasks; these are highly prioritized tasks)
Make a not-to-do list. Spare a paper for this so you do not divert (an extremely powerful strategy which I use)
Make plan B which can be used if emergency strikes (for unexpected events)
#2 Making quick decisions
Organize your life by becoming a pro at decision making
Weight the pros/con and compare the situations
Set a deadline for making a final decision else you will swing between I don’t know and I am not sure loop
Don’t second guess your decision.
Own it
#3 Tracking
Track How You Are Spending Your Time (how much on your goals, family, hobbies, and entertainment)
#4 No multitasking
Don’t multitask. Conquer one milestone at a time, as multitasking is your enemy
#5 Rising Early at 5 pm
To become productive you need to wake up early in the morning
Conquer your mornings by accomplishing bigger goals in the first half
Do not check your emails or swipe your phone at least in the first half of the morning (This can be challenging but worth a try else your priorities will get hindered)
Keep the most trivial tasks for the afternoon- this is the best utilization of such tasks
#6 Taking a break
Self-organization is incomplete if you will not take effective breaks.
Give yourself time to relax for maintaining excitement and enthusiasm
Restore the joy while working through frequent breaks.
At least give yourself 15 minutes celebration time after completing each milestone set for the day
After the 15 minutes, ride onto another task with a smile plastered on your face (yes the smile boost the excitement)
#7 Clearing your head
Clear your mind to maximize your brainpower and creativity
The best and effective way to clear your head is through journaling.
USE my Triple G technique (a bit of self-promotion! Please say I deserve this)
#8 Practice meditation
Start your day with something that you have never done before (for boosting creativity- maybe start it with a dance)
#9 Reviewing your work
When the clock strikes 12, it is time for reviewing your progress
Review so that you can adjust. Adjustment is vital for maximizing the results for the day
This strategy is also a great way to improve your task-management skill.
Analyze whether you’re headed in the right direction or not
Go into a self-reflection
#10 Merge the task together
Doubling up the similar duties and task of the day saves a ton of time and make you more organized no matter how they are listed on the priority list
Eg: Merge all the outdoor tasks together whenever you could.
Change your mindset by taking the responsibility
Drill in your head that you are responsible for every task you perform.
You actions = blame on yourself
Remember that with every action you are writing your destiny.
You are not a victim but a creator.
Develop a growth mindset by thinking that if you’re failing 10 times today then that is not in essence a failure.
#11 Find A Hobby
Another way to remain organized and productive is by finding a hobby.
Try replacing a bit of your time spent on social media with the hobby
Try writing, reading, painting, sculpting or photography, etc (hobbies boost your creative neurons helping you maintain the overall productivity)
Hobbies can help you find peace.
They are a form of meditation that plays a huge role in organizing your overall life.
This relaxing strategy can be given 15 minutes a day at least for getting your mental health back on track.
#12 Find A Buddy
Being organized does not mean isolation. It doesn’t mean a complete cut off for boosting productivity
You will need to talk to someone and that does not have to be related to work.
The best approach for becoming organized is to talk to someone who will lend you a different perspective on things and make you think from a different lens.
Find a buddy who will help you see little things that you might unintentionally overlook in your life.
Take a moment out of stress by socializing, taking constructive advice and guidance
Your buddy can be your greatest mentor who can tell exactly what you are missing on
Ask the buddy to hold you accountable for your bigger goals (bonus motivation)
#13 Maintain a work/family Balance
Keep In Touch With Your Loved Ones
Sometimes, you will not be able to gather your head around any particular task.
Don’t just stare at it.
Rather take a minute or two out for calling your loved ones for catching up.
Family can take your stress away, boost your energy level, clear your mind, and help you get better organized.
Now head back to work (extremely powerful energy to approach the work when you get stuck)
I can not stop myself from mentioning such energy boosters memories in my life: when I used to get stuck in coding . . . I used to literally cry my heart out to my dad. I remember the last time when he talked to me was about never giving up. After getting a dose of motivation from him, my program out of nowhere began running! If you still have such motivations in life then you are lucky, avail them.
#14 Rate yourself
Rate from 1-10 how much you are actually pushing yourself.
Excessive pushing can actually work against you.
It can tire you.
If you are pushing yourself 10 on 10 then sit back, relax, go easy and enjoy the process.
#15 Ignore Your Inner Critic
What is your inner voice saying?
Be mindful of your thoughts throughout the day [80% of them should be positive]
Your belief system is fed into the subconscious mind and it tells you “you are good at nothing” then be ready for the mind to work.
Your performance throughout the day is heavily dependent on the self-talk you will have.
The inner critic can be terminate your motivation plus self-confident by delaying the tasks thought interruptions
Overpower your inner critic by presenting a counter statement for negative thought
Ask yourself thoughtful questions
Practice a few vital journaling questions for self-discovery.
Finding your larger “why” in life for staying organized throughout the day.
#16 Money VS Time
Work on tradeoffs.
(I had an economics free-elective which taught be this principle)
If you want to get more accomplished by doing less than incorporate the formula of tradeoffs.
Pay someone for small things in exchange for saving your time. (same time which you can later use for more productive things)
You do not always have to pay in a form of cash.
Give presents or cook something for someone.
#17 Learn to say “no!”
Get out of the loop of people-pleasing.
Learn to say no to unimportant things,
Compare your priorities and then do not think twice while saying no.

Be The Optimist That You Should Be

For every task attach an emotion, this will help you concentrate and remain organized
Find a reason, your larger why of engaging with a particular task.
Remember Remarkable progress depends upon genuine interest.
#23 Do Not Stress Yourself With Anyone’s Problem
Stay focused on your life (the key to remaining organized throughout your life)
Do not stress over someone else’s problem if one does not appreciate your concerns.
Try to help but if one absolutely refuses to take any help then simply just track your own goals.
At-times Minding your business is a great blessing.
#24 Habitual Tasks
The key to an organization is turning your everyday task into an everyday habit.
Make your tasks easier by making them a habit
Do certain tasks with consistency without breaking the routine until it comes naturally.
The habitual task will save you time and make you more organized
#25 Make a self care list
Take care of your health
Maintain a health bullet journal (extremely imp, as I tend to ignore health but the journal keep reminding me)
Maintain a bullet journal regarding daily water consumption
Maintain a bullet journal regarding vital vitamins and minerals you consume as fuel
Keep yourself accountable by a self-care journal (i have so many things on it)
Bonus Tip: Tackle Distractions
Find a quiet place
Clean your desk for only 2-minutes, remember excessive cleaning is stealing your time (you can clean before sleeping at night, which is the last thing you will ever think to do!)
Turn of all the devices which are merely the distractions
Block websites which distract you
Use focus extension
Set a timer for each task (the key to success with the milestones)

Maintain a health bullet journal (extremely imp, as I tend to ignore health but the journal keep reminding me)
Maintain a bullet journal regarding daily water consumption
Maintain a bullet journal regarding vital vitamins and minerals you consume as fuel
Keep yourself accountable by a self-care journal (i have so many things on it)
Bonus Tip: Tackle Distractions
Find a quiet place
Clean your desk for only 2-minutes, remember excessive cleaning is stealing your time (you can clean before sleeping at night, which is the last thing you will ever think to do!)
Turn of all the devices which are merely the distractions
Block websites which distract you
Use focus extension
Set a timer for each task (the key to success with the milestones)
