 Merriam-Webster (MW) defines “mind,” in the noun tense, as the element or complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and reason. Furthermore, MW defines “set” as to put, lay, or stand (something) in a specified place or position. When you concatenate these words, we arrive at mindset. This compound word is so powerful that it can drive countries as well as individuals, alike, into mass turmoil or elevate them to great prosperity. The interesting thing about mindset is that it vacillates because its nature is predicated on situations and circumstances. We all have internal processes that govern our growth and development. Some may have a fixed mindset; therefore, growth and development can be limited. While others have a learning mindset and adjustments are made along our life’s journey. Whether fixed or learning, a mindset  is a set of assumptions, methods, or notations held by one or more people or groups of people and can also be seen as arising out of a person's world view or philosophy of life. Our mindset or logic box is our collection of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and habits (KASH) that often limit our perception and acts as a restriction on objective thought and creative expression. What is in your mindset? What are your views and perspectives that have eroded some of your best intentions with unintended consequences?

In 1972, one of the best-known slogans in public-service was “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” The United Negro College Fund ran this slogan in print, radio, and television as an intentional campaign to close a persistent gap between African Americans and other groups in college completion. They understood then as we know today that in a land that is constantly going through entropy only the learned will survive. We can no longer rest on the scaffold of mediocrity and not take the leap into the unknown.

The animated movie Frozen 2 was a mega-billion dollar hit at the box office and the soundtrack was equally successful on the music charts. One song, most notably, Into the Unknown, aligns with the perspectives of this article, in huge part because we fear what we don’t know, and many don’t ever like asking questions because it will make others believe that we don’t know thus the paradox.  Check out the first to verses of the song:

“I can hear you but I won't Some look for trouble while others don't There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away.

 These words are very powerful for a seminal audience to comprehend but if you dissect its meaning, you will understand the humanistic nature of individuals whose mindset has been hindered or restricted because they don’t want to leave the porch, get out of the boat, or take the leap into the unknown. The unknown is scary and unpredictable. It isn’t something that we are used to. We prefer routine and certainty but as I have always told my staff, certainty is the enemy and uncertainty an ally. Our 10-year old daughter sang this song so much during the Frozen 2’s hey-day that I became so curious that I woke one early Saturday morning to watch it for myself.

The movie’s plot was rich, and it captivated me. Elsa the Snow Queen has an extraordinary gift -- the power to create ice and snow. But no matter how happy she is to be surrounded by the people of Arendelle, Elsa finds herself strangely unsettled. After hearing a mysterious voice call out to her, Elsa travels to the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond her kingdom -- an adventure that soon turns into a journey of self-discovery. Synoptically, Elsa discovers that the voice calling to her was the memory of young Iduna's call; that her powers were given to her by nature because of Iduna's selfless act of saving Agnarr; and that Elsa herself is the fifth spirit who would break the water dam that would save their kingdom.

You see, the voice calling Elsa (like you and me) into the unknown was challenging her mindset and comfort zone. She was doing just fine after Frozen 1 but there was an agitation that persisted and kept her up at night, trepidatious and reluctant to escape from the comfort the has confined her perspectives. We all get comfortable and enjoy what comfort brings. Many people see comfort as an adjective, describing an attribute or something, when, in fact, comfort is a noun.

Comfort enters your home as a guest, remains as your host, and will eventually become your master. Comfort is a silent killer and has been charged with homicides in careers, families, marriages, and almost every place imaginable where growth and development are quintessential factors to success. Our limited KASH affects our ability to create or solve problems in two important ways: it heavily influences the kind of opportunities or problems that we recognize as being important enough to create (opportunities) and/or solve (problems); and it influences the analysis of the potential (opportunities) and cause (problems) and therefore the proper course of action to maximize the opportunities in life or to minimize the duplication of problems that have been solved in our past. What’s the definition of insanity? There, you got it, doing the same thing while expecting different results or better yet…being fearful of entering the unknown.  

Our mindset should be challenged. We should have a desire to grow but that’s not innate in us. Physically speaking, our bodies do this on the regular. When we are hot, our bodies don’t sit there and internally combust. No, our bodies respond to the external stimuli by sweating to ensure we don’t overheat and dehydrate in the process. If the hairs in our nose tickle a bit, we sneeze. In other words, our bodies respond to external forces and are not going to be suppressed by anything.

Like our physical nature, our psyche (not psychic) nature, which comprises of our mind, will, and emotions should, like a thermostat, adjust to the external environment to maintain the proper climate in our lives. To do this we must be committed to the foundational premise of continuous learning and development. Without challenging ourselves, we subscribe to an internal newsletter whose content never changes. Imagine that, picking up a magazine and reading the same articles over and over again. Certainly, the cure to insomnia. So, if you want to challenge your mindset and are daring to enter the unknown to discover and unlock your internal talents and gifts, you must evict comfort because comfort is the enemy of change. Not to mention, we must dismiss the notion that nobody likes “change” but a wet baby.

Apostle Paul, whose mindset was drastically change on the Damascus Road, wrote that we are not to be conformed to the ways of the world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds or mindset. He realized, like we should, that transformation doesn’t end with age or experience, but it continues daily as we invent and reinvent ourselves. If you can agree with this, then you must establish parameters to keep your mind percolating and hungry for more.

Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926, on her second attempt. 19-year-old Gertrude Ederle swam 21 miles from Dover, England, to Cape Griz-Nez across the English Channel, which separates Great Britain from the northwestern tip of France. On August 6, 1926, Ederle entered the water at Cape Gris-Nez in France at 7:08 a.m. to make her second attempt at the Channel. The water was predictably cold as she started out that morning, but unusually calm. Twice that day, however–at noon and 6 p.m.–Ederle encountered squalls along her route and Burgess urged her to end the swim. Ederle’s father and sister, though, who were riding in the boat along with Burgess, agreed with Ederle that she should stay the course. Ederle’s father had promised her a new roadster at the conclusion of the swim, and for added motivation he called out to her in the water to remind her that the roadster was only hers if she finished. Ederle persevered through storms and heavy swells, and, finally, at 9:04 p.m. after 14 hours and 31 minutes in the water, she reached the English coast, becoming the sixth person and first woman to swim the Channel successfully. Furthermore, she had bettered the previous record by two hours.

Afterwards, Ederle told Alec Rutherford of The New York Times, “I knew it could be done, it had to be done, and I did it.” She went on to say that she was successful the second time around, not because of the incentives outlined by her father but because she possessed a mindset that failure was not an option. She started the journey with intentionality to reaching the English coast. It was in her mind from the beginning even though she felt like giving up and her body became fatigued. She was set on not breaking the record but breaking up the comfort in her mindset that would oftentimes tell her she wasn’t capable, or the feat was impossible.

What has kept you anchored in a position of mediocrity? What has prevented you from going to the next level? I can guarantee you this…that something would be your mind. The richest place on the planet, found in every place across the globe, is the graveyard – filled with so many people who could have, would have, and should have, but for many (not all) were scared to enter the unknown. I am inspired by these words myself, and will likely archive this article because I, like you, will no longer be afraid to enter the unknown, because when we are there, we can unlock some of our life’s greatest experiences and moments. CANTLON: CT HOCKEY 2021 OFFSEASON VOL 1

BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT -The offseason has begun for the Hartford Wolf Pack and the rest of the AHL, except for the Pacific division, which has a playoff. Teams are very busy planning and signing players and coaches for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

PLAYER AND COACHING MOVEMENT

All of the AHL teams not in the Pacific Division have begun to send players to their respective ECHL teams for some post-season experience. The Toronto Marlies sent four players, Bobby McMann, Jeremy McKenna, Noel Hoefenmayer, and Gordie Green, to the Wichita Thunder. The Colorado Eagles sent Sasha Matala to the Utah Grizzlies. The Ontario Reign sent Nick Boka to the Ft. Wayne Komets while Josh Ingham and Jack Sadek packed their bags for the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Doyle Somerby of the Tucson Roadrunners heads to the South Carolina Stingrays. The Manitoba Moose sent Peter Kreiger to the Indy Fuel, while the Rochester Americans sent Brendan Warren to the Jacksonville Icemen. Nelson Nogier, Cole Kehler, and C.J. Suess were sent to the Tulsa Oilers.

Henderson heading to the Pacific Division after eliminating  San Jose on the strength of a two-goal and three-point effort from ex-Pack Danny O’ Regan has sent three players to the Vegas taxi squad in Dylan Sikura and Cody Glass. Henderson will play with the Bakersfield Condors for the Pacific Division post-season title and the John Chick Trophy. The Condors eliminated the San Diego Gulls in OT Monday. Brad Malone, the nephew of former Hartford Whaler, Greg Malone, and the cousin of ex-Pack, Ryan Malone, scored the game-winner. The first AHL player to Europe, David Kase of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, signs with HC Sparta Prague (Czech Republic-CEL). A former Quinnipiac Bobcat, Karlis Cukste, who played with the San Jose Barracuda (AHL) and the Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL) this past year, heads home to Dynamo Riga (Latvia-KHL). Ex-Pack/New York Ranger, Tim Erixon, goes from Växjö HC to  Timrå IK (Sweden-SHL) for next season. Former UCONN Husky, Ruslan Iskhakov, moved from TPS Turku (Finland-FEL) to Adler Mannheim (Germany-DEL). Also, in UCONN news, the University announced a new five-year extension for its head coach Mike Cavanaugh and had the groundbreaking for the new 2,600 seats $70 million arena-ready between September 2022-January 2023. The Maine Black Bears selected Ben Barr, the assistant coach from the national champion, UMASS-Amherst, to replace the late Dennis “Red” Gendron over the ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger (now Islanders) and Maine associate coach for the last six years, Ben Guite. Replacing Barr at UMASS-Amherst is Penn State's assistant coach for the last 10 years, Matt Lindsay. Previously, he was an assistant at Princeton and was a volunteer assistant at Colorado College. He started at Division-III at Hobart College (SUNYAC) and Utica College. Lake Superior St. (NCHC) Damon Whitten’s contract was extended six years. Former Sound Tiger, Peter Mannino, gives up his head coaching job with the Des Moines Buccaneers (USHL) and signs on as an assistant coach with Colorado College (NCHC).

The playoff title will honor the late CCHA great coach of Michigan State, Ron Mason, with the Mason Cup. The regular season title winner will be awarded the McNaughton Cup. USA Hockey let several coaches go, including Kenny Rausch (Danbury/Immaculate High), the Director of USA Youth Hockey.

TRANSFERS

Goaltender Evan Fear departs Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) and transfers to Northeastern (HE), making 57 school transfers this collegiate off-season and 47 grad transfers. Tobias Fladeby finishes at AIC (AHA) and signs with Tingryds AIF (Sweden-Allsvenskan), making 80 college players sign pro deals in North America and Europe. Emil Öhrvall departs Sacred Heart University (AHA) for BIK Karlskoga (Sweden-Allsvenskan). The Pioneers were his third school in three separate conferences in his collegiate career. Nick Rheaume, the son of ex-Pack/Ranger, Pascal Rhéaume, has committed to UMASS-Lowell (HE) for 2022-23. The IIHF World Championships are underway in Latvia. There are many familiar names dotting the roster landscape. In Group A, the 3-0 Slovakian team has current Wolf Pack goalie Adam Huska and ex-Pack/Ranger Marek Hrivik. Huska has yet to play, and Hrivik has four points in three games. Slovakia engineered an early upset beating Russia 3-1 on Monday. Denmark has ex-Pack Niklas Jensen, who scored a hat trick in their first game and had a goal and two assists against Great Britain in a 3-2 overtime win Tuesday. Sweden had ex-Pack/Ranger player Oscar Lindberg and ex-Wolf Pack Carl Klingberg. The Czech Republic has ex-Pack and current Rangers defenseman Libor Hajek. They also have Adam, and David Musil, the nephews of former Whalers and Rangers player Bobby Holik. What inspired you to take on your current muse ( that you are posting this on ):

Bit Well, back in my days of Roleplay.chat, I met a guy.  We spoke, we became friendly and I developed a crush on him... He liked me too... He was there for me... It was nice and yada yada. I met him in person... he proposed... I was engaged... I moved in with him a few months later... He introduced me to a few games, like Soul Calibur 5, I was only playing 3 on my ps2. And Blazblue blue continuum shift ext. I played, I was interested. I hadn’t settled on a favorite character because they all were a bit... well I hadn’t gotten the chance to know the characters like I do now.  He pushed me to like Rachel but I liked Platinum. I never finished the story mode...  We broke up, I moved back home. Go ahead a few months I was looking for new muses for rpc... I had an interest in Ragna as a character, and was curious since most protags in red like him get a ‘love interest’... Even if it’s a fan picked one... I could not see Noel in that light because she was practically a clone of his sister...

I never shipped it... Sorry... But anyway I was curious... Because Jin had Tsubaki... and Noel while she existed... I just couldn’t see it... My research brought me to the Wiki for Blazblue...

Just looked at existing characters. I got curious at Ragna’s history and about Bloodedge, it led me to... Not Celica... I ignored her name... But Trinity! Trinity fucking Glassfield. I set up my Side blog as Lost-little-Mercury with a side muse for Trinity...  A certain Hazama rper found me and gave me advice. Suggesting I move to a single blog, and going from there. 

I kept Celica? Because honestly? She was Rare! She was new! She was going to be in the new game! And I had to be the first. I wasn’t the first, and I wasn’t the last. But Celica grew on me. I loved her! I think I do a decent job as her! 

I picked Hakuno up because I wanted to get into Fate, via rpc, no one was Hakuno.. and I usually pick the obscure gems.  

And as of right now? I don’t really care about being obscure muses any more!  Or being an only. I grew out of that... and I was ashamed to ever have that notion in my head.

Celica: She’s a healin’ deus ex machina!  Fem!Kagura: Lady of many tastes. And fun to play~ Hakuno: How I play her? I play her as a homunculus copy of the MoonCell from Extra and Extra CCC.  I like the personal spin I put on her. I put work in there involing physical therapy and getting her strength in her legs and what not.   I took the Haku... and made her different!

Music, pictures, friends, spitballing ideas. Just stuff.

Biggest struggle in regards to your current muse:

 Honestly? People hating. Celica gets a bad rep for being put into Chronophantsam like she was. It does bug me, when some one who had no issues wit her before the game came out could be sweet on my muse but then wants to request art of her getting her face stomped in after the game hit western shores!  I agree her english voice is bad. And some things are questionable. But  She was a preexisting character from a book series based off blazblue.  I don’t know... I see the shit involving the hate and it is normal I know but people are just violent...   I was scared to rp as her for awhile cause I got harassed. It was pretty fuckin’ stupid. 

And for Hakuno? Blank slate... And one game not being released... I started as her before Extella was even a thing... Going off Extra and the limited info of Extra CCC.

Toys R Us Plans Bankruptcy Filing Amid Debt Struggle

Toys “R” Us Inc., which has struggled to lift its fortunes since a buyout loaded the retailer with debt more than a decade ago, is preparing a bankruptcy filing as soon as today, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Chapter 11 reorganization of America’s largest toy chain would deal another blow to a brick-and-mortar industry that’s already reeling from store closures, sluggish mall traffic and the threat of Amazon.com Inc.

Filing for bankruptcy would allow Toys “R” Us to restructure $400 million in debt that comes due next year, potentially letting the chain rebuild as a leaner organization. The retailer has hired a claims agent, which typically helps with administering such a process, people with knowledge of the situation said last week. And its vendors have been curtailing shipments amid concern that Toys “R” Us might not be able to pay its bills.

“This filing is really a buildup of financial problems over the past 15 years,” said Jim Silver, an industry analyst and the editor of toy-review site TTPM.com. “Finally, the straw broke the camel’s back.”

With speculation of a bankruptcy mounting, shares of Toys “R” Us’s vendors tumbled on Monday. Mattel Inc., the maker of Barbie and Fisher-Price, fell 6.2 percent -- its worst decline in seven weeks. Shares of Hasbro, the company behind Monopoly, Nerf and Transformers, dropped 1.7 percent.

A representative for Toys “R” Us declined to comment.

Bankruptcy Financing

JPMorgan Chase & Co., Barclays Plc, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. are said to be vying to provide financing for Toys “R” Us while it goes through bankruptcy. Reorg Research said earlier Monday that a filing could come as soon as today.

The debtor-in-possession loan -- known as a DIP -- could be as much as $3 billion, a person with knowledge of the discussions said.

Ratings agencies have rushed to cut their credit ratings on Toys “R” Us to reflect the sinking market sentiment, indicating just how rapidly things have unraveled at the retailer. S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings both downgraded the toy seller Monday, citing media reports and market data pointing to an increased possibility of a broad restructuring. S&P cut its rating to CCC-, the third-lowest level. It had the retailer rated B- just two weeks ago, and Moody’s Investors Service still has a B3 rating and stable outlook for the name.

Much of the toy supplier’s debt is the legacy of a $7.5 billion leveraged buyout more than a decade ago. In 2005, Bain Capital, KKR & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust loaded Toys “R” Us up with debt to take it private. Since then, the Wayne, New Jersey-based chain has struggled to dig itself out.

Interest Expenses

Some years, the company had to spend as much as half a billion dollars on cash interest expenses alone, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Noel Hebert. That left Toys “R” Us with less cash to put toward store expansions, merchandising, and -- crucially -- the growth of its online presence.

“With these debt levels, how much actual flexibility do you have in this environment?” asked Charles O’Shea, who covers Toys “R” Us for Moody’s Corp. “You have to invest online -- because your principal competitors there are really good -- and you’ve got to deal with the debt load and your maturities on top of that. The pie is only so big.”

Chapter 11 also will help the company get out of burdensome leases, said Craig Johnson, head of Customer Growth Partners.

“The idea being, after a period of time, you work yourself out of Chapter 11 and you go on being a smaller, but financially more healthy retailer,” he said.

Domino’s Veteran

In 2015, Toys “R” Us named Dave Brandon as its chief executive officer, turning to the former head of Domino’s Pizza Inc. to attempt a comeback. Brandon had run Domino’s for 11 years and gained a reputation as a turnaround artist. He helped shepherd the pizza chain, then owned by Bain Capital Partners, through the largest initial public offering in restaurant history in 2004.

Brandon showed signs of progress in early 2016, when the company posted its first holiday sales gain in four years.

That year, the chain extended maturities on some of its borrowings, giving it more time to execute Brandon’s plan. As part of his revival effort, he has been sprucing up stores with more toy demonstrations and other experiences.

But the comeback faltered in the more recent Christmas season. Same-store sales dropped 2.5 percent during the final nine weeks of last year, hurt by sluggish demand and deep discounts. The toy seller had to reckon with new competitors driving prices lower and lower, O’Shea said. 

‘Price War’

Brandon, 65, lamented the price competition during a conference call in June.

“Make no mistake about it, there is a little bit of a price war situation right now,’’ Brandon said.

As the woes have piled up, the cost of insuring against default on Toys “R” Us debt has surged. Prices on six-month and one-year swaps have climbed to record highs, suggesting the market is pricing in all-but-certain odds of a Chapter 11 filing, which protects companies against creditors during a reorganization.

Credit default swaps expiring in December traded at more than 75 points upfront Monday. That means it would cost about $7.5 million to insure $10 million of Toys “R” Us debt.

Toys “R” Us’s bonds have been hammered. Its 7.375 percent notes due 2018 traded for as little as 18 cents during Monday’s session, according to Trace, the bond-price reporting system of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. That’s down from 97.25 cents on Aug. 30.

If Toys “R” Us can get its debt under control again, the chain still has promise, TTPM’s Silver said. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization has been good, he said.

“If they didn’t have the debt would be making $500 to $600 million a year in profit,” he said. “The problem is the debt.”

QUEZON CITY, Feb. 13 (PIA) -- Sixty one bills in the House of Representatives seeking to phase-out or regulate single-use plastics were tackled recently in a technical working group chaired by Rep. Francisco "Kiko" Benitez under the House of Representatives Committee on Ecology..

"This legislation is a critical, concrete step towards a circular economy. There are products that we can immediately ban. But for products that are not easily replaceable, we must give manufacturers time to produce alternatives and diversify," Benitez said.

The lawmaker emphasized the need to consult all stakeholders from the sectors that will be affected, in view of the wide range of products to be covered by the bills such as plastic straws for drinks, plastic coffee stirrers, plastic bags of thickness below 50 microns, plastic cups and cutlery, containers of polystyrene, balloons and candy sticks, buntings, and confetti.

Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, for her part as co-author, also expressed strong support for the immediate passage of the legislative measure regulating and prohibiting single-use plastics.

“We have seen with our own eyes and we have known for some time that single-use plastics have a negative impact on the environment. This is even more problematic in our flood-prone areas, where plastic wastes clog our sewerage systems. The issue isn’t just that plastic bags take forever to disintegrate, it is the massive number of plastics Filipinos use and quickly throw away. These plastics are choking the life out of our oceans and forests and polluting our communities,” Legarda said.

Legarda, a three-term Senator and representative of the Lone District of Antique, said that the complete eradication of single-use plastics, a term commonly referring to disposable plastic items that are thrown after one-time use, must be supported as an environmentally-conscious solution to the plastic crisis.

She added that companies must change their economic mindset, wasteful production processes and packaging methods, from the use of seemingly cost-effective plastics into investing in reusable and recyclable products which are more sustainable in the long run.

The Climate Change Commission (CCC), led by its Chairperson-designate Department of Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez, supports the nationwide ban on single-use plastics as a vital component of a low-carbon economy and to advance sustainability, promote biodiversity, ensure food security, and curb pollution.

The climate body stressed that the passage of a legislative measure on this subject matter will further push policymakers to proactively review the implementation of existing environmental laws, such as the Clean Air Act (Republic Act or RA No. 8749), Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003), Clean Water Act (RA 9275), and the Climate Change Act (9729) to ensure a more holistic, sustainable, and inclusive recovery of our communities and the environment. CALOOCAN CITY, Dec. 21 (PIA) -- Local governments of partner cities under the Cities Development Initiative (CDI) showcased exemplary climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) practices at the Cities’ Initiatives for CCAM webinar, held during the recent 13th Annual Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week.

The webinar, which was co-organized by the CCC and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity (SURGE) Project, focused on recognizing the replicable CCAM initiatives of cities to encourage more local government units to pursue efforts geared towards building and increasing climate resilience within communities. The event was streamed live via the Facebook page of the Climate Change Commission (CCC).

“The participation of local governments and their involvement and leadership are very important in adaptation and mitigation. This has been emphasized because while national policy covers the general framework of our country, including those that are passed by Congress or issued by the Executive Branch of the government, it is important that our local communities, including the CSOs and private organizations, are involved in this endeavor,” said Congressman Edgardo Chatto, Representative of 1st District of Bohol and Chair of the House Committee on Climate Change in his message.

“The local governments are the frontliners in climate action. We call on our local leaders to recognize the prevailing climate emergency and address the risks in their communities. We enjoin you to revisit and enhance your strategies and plans for reducing disaster risk and adapting to climate change informed by the latest science and risk assessment,” said CCC Secretary Emmanuel M. de Guzman in his message.

Four partner cities, which include General Santos City, Legazpi City, Tagbilaran City, and Zamboanga City, presented their ongoing efforts and plans for climate change adaptation and mitigation, such as low-emission development strategies and mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in development planning. These LGUs also delivered a statement of their commitment to continue their efforts on climate change adaptation and mitigation, as part of their strategies to adapt to a sustainable future.

General Santos City’s adaptation and mitigation plans include the passing of a City Land Use Plan (CLUP), which includes climate and disaster risk and hazard mapping of areas, identifying the major greenhouse gas producers in the city for inventory to make way for future interventions; and replacement of old mercury lights with the more environment-friendly LED lights.

“In line with the celebration of the Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week, let it be known that the local government unit of General Santos City would like to profess our commitment towards ‘Adapting for a Sustainable Future’ by ensuring that not only do we engage in more and impactful climate change adaptation and mitigation projects and initiatives, but to also commit to engaging our youth, the private sector, and more partners in our efforts versus global warming,” said General Santos City Mayor Ronnel C. Rivera.

Legazpi City, on the other hand, shared that they continuously work to implement CCAM actions, such as entity- and community-level greenhouse gas inventory to formulate policies and programs on emission reduction and sequestration; greenhouse gas management planning; Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP) for 2019-2028, which helps them develop local policies, projects, programs, and activities geared towards addressing climate change; Alay Lakad Tanim Kahoy Para Sa Puso, dubbed as the Legazpi City Arbor Day, which is an annual activity every February 14 to promote health through walking and love for the environment by planting trees; random emission testing of public utility and private vehicles; and waste reduction initiatives through the establishment of disposal facilities, sustainable composting facilities, clean energy for agriculture support facilities, and septage treatment facilities.

“Local governments have a critical role to play in climate change adaptation and mitigation. This is a challenging feat, but we can neither afford to have second thoughts nor have a pit stop. The right time to start is now, and let us continue our little steps. The small ripples of change that we do in our areas of responsibility should create bigger waves of transformation. Together, we can achieve what we are all dreaming for,” said Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal.

Tagbilaran City, for its part, is a coastal city prone to hydrometeorological hazards, such as flooding, storm surge, typhoons, and rain-induced landslides. Some of the CCAM initiatives they shared are the formulation of their LCCAP, conduct of greenhouse gas inventory and management plan, installation of solar panels, mangrove planting, regular coastal cleanup, use of permeable materials in open spaces, rainwater harvesting, and ban on single-use plastics and polystyrene.

“As the mayor of Tagbilaran City, I respond to the global call to action to combat climate change and commit to showing leadership in the city by advocating for climate action consistent with science. I will work to increase awareness of the threat that climate change poses to the health and well-being of communities, especially to children,” said Tagbilaran City Mayor John Geesnell L. Yap II.

Meanwhile, Zamboanga City reduces its environmental impact and mitigate climate change through the following initiatives: GHG emission reduction strategies; energy conservation program; rehabilitation of streetlights project with non-hazardous and eco-friendly LED bulbs; waste-to-value as alternative technologies for residual waste; establishment of the transfer station and material recovery facilities; waterfront and heritage walk development; climate-resilient school buildings; and watershed/mangrove rehabilitation and reforestation projects.

“The Environment Code of the City of Zamboanga highlights the determination of the city LGU to pursue sustainable development and to protect the right of the people to a balanced ecology; and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, by advancing development while preserving the quality of the environment free from any disturbance, such as but not limited to the adverse impacts of climate change,” said Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle G. Climaco.

The USAID’s SURGE Project works with CDI cities to strengthen their climate change mitigation through GHG reduction. Since 2019, the project has been supporting the cities of Tagbilaran and Zamboanga in formulating their GHG Management Plan, and the cities of General Santos and Legazpi in developing their GHG Inventory Reports. These cities were also assisted in accounting the GHG reduction potentials for their projects and programs.
