On Narrative Consequence
Or, a meta on how every single one of Katsuki Bakugou’s and Enji Todoroki’s misdeeds have directly or indirectly resulted in their misfortune.
Before I begin, I would like to say sorry for postponing other metas I’ve promised to write in favour of this meta. Well, I say meta, but this is more of a rant than anything. Namely, by writing this, I am mostly venting my frustration with a certain belief somewhat widespread in the MHA fandom - that Katsuki and Enji have never been properly punished for anything they did.
First, let’s examine what “proper punishment” even means. The answers probably vary from person to person, but the most consistent ones I’ve seen centered around legal punishment, verbal calling out and, sometimes, an “eye for an eye” type of retribution. I’ll get to the last two later, but the first one - legal punishment - is genuinely not something either Katsuki or Enji have gotten.
“But Chatterbox! That means the people who say they weren’t punished properly are actually right!” Well, yeah, if this was real life then legal punishment would be the only appropriate response for crimes like spousal and child abuse, as well as certain bullying tactics like suicide baiting.
However, My Hero Academia is not real life and Katsuki and Enji aren’t real people. They’re fictional characters within a narrative and that narrative has a way of dishing out its own punishment. Just because the two of them haven’t been sent to jail/juvie doesn’t mean they were immune to karmic narrative punishment. Such punishment is obviously not possible in real life since karma doesn’t exist, only direct action, but in a story like MHA, the author can write events to serve that purpose.
With that in mind and to put it bluntly, you’d have to ignore large chunks of canon to claim the two weren’t punished. In fact, many events in MHA are designed to hit Katsuki and Enji specifically where it will hurt them the most and in a way that will make them learn their lessons and retain them. Let’s go over the things that happen to them and what actions led to that.
Katsuki Bakugou starts off the series as a bully convinced he’s standing at the top and determined to keep our loveable protagonist Izuku down because, deep down, he (perhaps irrationally, at that point) believes Izuku has whatever it takes to surpass him and fears the failure and loss of identity that would mean for him. Of course, this merely explains his actions and doesn’t justify them, so what is his punishment?
Well, the punishment the narrative decides for him is making those fears come true. The entire story until about the end of S3 (so, for the first 120-ish chapters of the manga) is about Izuku being built up and Katsuki being torn down.
Sometimes this is done incidentally (the Sludge Villain case, which both shakes up Katsuki’s belief in himself as the strongest and leads to Izuku earning One For All, while also serving as karmic punishment for Katsuki going too far with his bullying earlier*), but most of the time it’s a direct result of his mistakes (his loss to Izuku in the Heroes vs Villains excercise/DvK1, him being unable to reach out to Shouto to bring out his full power like Izuku did at the Sports Festival, his temper tantrum attracting the League of Villains and costing him any respect he might have earned by winning, his attitude making him fail the provisional license exam while Izuku passed, etc.).
*(Obviously this only works as punishment from a narrative standpoint, anyone who says a real 15-year-old deserved to almost be murdered because they were a bully is, uh, not someone I’d want to associate myself with.)
I already went into depth about precisely what and how Katsuki loses over the course of the series in this very long character analysis, but the tl;dr version is that he goes from believing that he is the strongest and Izuku is the weakest to believing that he is the failure who caused All Might’s end and Izuku is the prodigy chosen to be All Might’s successor. Izuku keeps building up his self-esteem while Katsuki keeps losing it. In other words, his punishment for trying to tear down Izuku is being torn down himself.
Some would argue that this doesn’t count because Izuku didn’t tear him down personally and instead that this is just the natural and inevitable result of Izuku getting stronger and Katsuki having to face reality. Putting aside that a character like Izuku wouldn’t want to personally tear him down, here’s where we go back to the verbal calling out, the “eye for an eye” and the more “direct” punishments.
A shocking amount of people believe that Izuku has never called out Katsuki for his behavior, some even going so far as to say that Izuku doesn’t realize what Katsuki’s doing is wrong due to Stockholm Syndrome or something. This infuriates me because it is supposed Izuku Stans doing a disservice to Izuku’s character. While it’s true that Izuku doesn’t hate Katsuki himself (I go into detail about why here, along with the reason why he’d forgive him), but he absolutely hates a lot of his actions and can and will let him know that.
Even way back in S1, when he is still a meek terrified kid, he stands up to him. When Katsuki confronts him after the entrance exam and threatens him, Izuku doesn’t budge, he tells him that he’s going to UA and there’s nothing he can do about it, causing him to back off.
During DvK1, despite Katsuki acting more unhinged than usual and trying to either beat him up or provoke him into using OFA, Izuku looks him in the eye and tells him the insulting nickname he gave him is now the name of a hero. He even kind of taunts him by saying he has Katsuki’s weaknesses recorded in the notebook Katsuki burned and threw away!
And he keeps doing it! When they have to work together to fight All Might and Katsuki refuses to do so, even lashing out violently, Izuku yells at him right back and even punches him hard eventually. Granted, it was mostly because it looked like Katsuki would give up on the one thing Izuku admires about him instead of for revenge, but still.
Izuku accepts Katsuki’s challenge in DvK2 not just because he wants to give Katsuki a chance to let out his emotions and find answers, but also because he wants to air his grievences (what he really thought of Katsuki, how it felt to chase after him) and give Katsuki answers in the form of a resounding “I’ll surpass you” and an OFA powered punch to the face.
Another common claim is that the adults and kids around Katsuki never do anything about him. This may have been true in middle school, but UA? Aizawa restrains him and negates his Quirk the second he tries to attack Izuku during the Quirk Apprehension test and tells him to stop wasting his talent after DvK1. When Katsuki grabs an unconscious Shouto by the shirt after their match, Midnight knocks him out and then he’s chained and muzzled.** All Might spells out what he’s been doing wrong after DvK2.
**(Sidebar: it amuses me that this is called out as inhumane treatment and too harsh punishment, even though the adults had no way of knowing whether Katsuki would attack again or what it would take to calm him down, by the same people who claim Katsuki isn’t punished enough. Well, which is it?)
The adults absolutely intervene when he steps out of line. And even when they don’t, they tend to have a reason. All Might didn’t stop the Heroes vs Villains excercise because he knew that if he stepped in, Izuku wouldn’t feel like he’s proven anything, to himself or to Katsuki. He didn’t step in for Izuku’s sake, not Katsuki’s.
As for the End of Term Exam, Aizawa didn’t put Izuku on a team with Katsuki because he “wanted Izuku to get along with his abuser,” but because he knew that Izuku had great leadership and cooperation skills except when he’s with Katsuki and his inability to force difficult people to work with him would cost him in the field. Besides, neither Katsuki nor Izuku can afford to have bad blood between them in high-stakes situations. It might be harsh, but Aizawa was doing it for both of their sakes.
The only thing the adults could have done differently is come up with a more long-term solution to the problem, preferably by actually talking to the people involved, but this was aknowledged after the duo broke curfew to fight.
In conclusion, Katsuki has, in fact, absolutely been called out by the people around him and punished by the narrative thouroughly.
Phew, that got longer than I planned... Where was I? Ah, yes, Area Man Misplaced In The Role of Father.
Enji Todoroki spent his life desperately trying to reach All Might’s spot as number one hero. When he feared his own skills would never be enough, he hatched a plan to get into a Quirk Marriage and then make one of his offspring surpass All Might in his place. Why he thought that was a good idea, I don’t know, but it fits the psychology of the typical Stage Mom, living her, uh, I mean his dream vicariously through his child, Shouto.
In any case, in order to accomplish his goal, Enji was willing to use any means necessary, icluding brutal training of a toddler, physical violence against his wife whenever she tries to interfere and... whatever... happened to Touya. Nothing outside of that goal mattered to him, “unsuited” children like Natsuo and Fuyumi (who presumably only or mostly inherited Rei’s Quirk) were tossed aside and ignored.
So, how does the narrative punish this sorry excuse for a hero, father and husband? By giving him exactly what he wanted, the number one spot? Apparently so!
“But Chatterbox! Isn’t that Endeavor being rewarded by the narrative?” You would think so, but interpreting it that way is actually completely missing the point of Endeavor’s Arc! Because everytime I think of how it’s presented, I’m reminded of a line I might have heard in Disney’s Princess and the Frog: “Did you get what you wanted? S’ what you got what you need?”
After All Might’s retirement, the number one spot was left open for Endeavor to take his place. This is what he’d wanted for a long time and believed he would never get himself. But Endeavor didn’t earn that spot, he was given it, and he knows it. He may have taken his place, but he never truly surpassed All Might and, now that he’s out of commission, neither he nor Shouto (who doesn’t seem to care anyway) ever will.
In other words, every single one of his efforts, every horrible thing he’s done to his family up until that point... It was all for nothing. He may have been at least somewhat aware that what he was doing was indeed horrible but just surpressed that knowledge for the sake of achieving his goal, but now that his goal has amounted to nothing and he feels lost and aimless, he’s finally forced to reflect on his deeds.
But even asides from that, who is Endeavor, the hero with the most solved cases in history, the one who saved countless lives? Well, not much of a number one hero, even with his family situation not being public knowledge, it turns out. After Kamino, the people didn’t just need a hero who would defeat villains, but a hero who would reassure them that everything will be okay and discourage criminals by his mere presence. That he would uphold Peace. Endeavor’s victory never felt more hollow, because the people don’t need him, they need another All Might.
So, Endeavor approaches the man himself for advice. But Toshinori tells him he can’t be him, nor should he attemt to. The age of All Might is over and the public needs to accept that, if they want to prove to Shigaraki that they can go on without him. Toshinori thinks Endeavor should be his own hero, the kind of hero people like Hawks saw in him, the only one who wasn’t lured into complacency by All Might; the tenacious, dedicated and efficient powerhouse against whom villains wouldn’t dare stand against.
And yet, that, too, feels hollow. Because even if All Might and Hawks believe in Endeavor, even if the rest of society comes to believe Endeavor... What does any of that matter for Enji Todoroki? The man who ruined his family for the sake of his own ambitions? Enji now knows that he’ll probably never be a true hero, let alone number one, because of what he’s done, even if the entire thing remains a secret.
Still, he has no other choice. He’s number one, understanding for the first time the enourmous pressure and burden that comes with the position. And, of course, the villain attacks, leading to Enji getting his face torn open by High End, coincidentally (really, within the narrative, it’s not a coincidence at all) on the same side that Shouto got his burn scar. But that is fine, because for the first time he’s fighting not for the sake of his ambitions but for the society that needs a pillar, no matter how unstable or rotten it is beneath its shiny and sturdy marble surface.
For that reason, though this is never expicitly stated, he can’t even “properly” punish himself by going public with his crimes - imagine the utter trainwreck the new number one hero revealing himself to be a former abuser would be, in the wake of the chaos and uncertainty caused by All Might’s fall? When it comes to his family, atonement really is the only option at this point.
So Enji’s punishment is getting exactly what he wanted, at the cost of carrying the world on his shoulders knowing he’ll never be what it needs, getting disfigured and having to face his broken family. Speaking of, what about that family? Aren’t they letting him get off scot-free? Contrary to popular belief, no.
Natsuo doesn’t want to forgive him or even aknowledge his efforts to change and be the hero they can be proud of, he wants nothing to do with him. Shouto is willing to see those efforts and is curious to see what the results will be, he wants Enji to make good on his words, but he still agrees with Natsuo and doesn’t forgive him or want him in his life beyond the pragmatic uses of his experience as a pro. Above all else, he wants to carve an identity outside of his father’s former wishes and outside his hatred for him.
Fuyumi does forgive him unconditionally, but it has less to do with Enji genuinely earning her forgiveness and more to do with her desire for a happy, normal family. Rei also seemingly forgives him, but for her, it might simply be a desire to let go of the hatred that made her scald her child’s face. It would be so easy for her to simply blame all of it on Enji, but she can’t, not all of it.
And Enji himself certainly hasn’t forgiven anything, nor does he demand forgiveness from others and fully accepts the consequences of both his sins and his dream.
I don’t think Enji’s quite done paying his debt yet, there is still the issue with Touya and I bet the LoV would be salivating at the chance to expose him if they found out (in fact I hope that happens, not because I have a thirst for punishment but because I think it would be a fantastic plot), but so far, he definitely hasn’t gone unpunished.
Before I end this long-ass rant (holy shit, this has gotten way out of hand), I have one more thing to address: what is the purpose of a punishment? It’s to stop bad behavior and make the perpetrators realise what they’re doing is wrong. In that way, I believe the narrative punishment of Katsuki and Enji was successful.
So, what, exactly, would even be the point of “properly” punishing them further? Vindication? For whom, the characters or certain audience members?
Again, in real life, learning your lesson, feeling regret and trying to do better isn’t a get out of jail free card (though certain places do prioritize rehabilitation over punitive justice, finding that the former significantly lowers the rate of re-offending), but in fiction, priorities are different. It’s not about making things even (would anything ever make them even?) or treating characters “fairly” or teaching the audience basic morals, it’s about what would be the most interesting to read about.
Everyone’s opinions are different, but honestly?
The story of two boys growing past their relationship as a bully and a victim, past even the destructive rivalry of tearing each other down, and embracing the relationship of pushing each other past who they are now by borrowing each other’s best qualities?
And the story of a man who wants to be a father and a hero even though it might be impossible, of a family that might just one day find closure in the belief that all the years of suffering amounted to something in the end?
I’d take those over some sanctimonious, heavy-handed morality tale of an ao3 “fix fic” any day. Yes this entire rant is actually me being salty after seeing too many self-righteous “I’ll adress what Horikoshi won’t uwu” fic authors, fucking sue me.
#my hero academia#bnha#bnha meta#katsuki bakugou#enji todoroki#chatterbox meta#first one who responds to this with 'so you think victims shouldn't want to punish their abusers???' owes me a drink#i'm just pissed off by ppl who think vindication is the only acceptable thing to want in these stories#and the general preachiness of fix fics#apologies for any offense though#i was feeling very spiteful

Beyond The Surface
A/N: So this was meant to be a thank you gift for @vividlylost for this lovely art she did of my SOUL, but as usual my writing... took the longer scenic route. And since this is very much a Self Insert oneshot (starring ME!!!) there is first person POV, so be warned. Also it takes place in the Underswap universe because why not, I have a soft spot for that AU~! And it involves a headcanon or two I have considering a certain skeleton. ^_^
I felt jealous for the monsters. Living conditions pre-imprisonment aside, it was easy to see how they’re magical beings of Hope, Love, and Compassion. They get to be in tune with their magic, their soul, what with how it literally is what their bodies are made of. They’re not perfect, but they can see the entirety of themselves and what their capable of.
Something that I wish I had way before I fell Underground.
It was... weird, seeing my soul. Unlike Chara’s (which had a hue of pure red that mirrored their eyes and sarcastic yet strong spirit), mine was an unusual mix of dulled yellow and faded blue. It didn’t look that impressive, yet it felt like it was me. Like an imaginary friend of mine had come back to life, albeit lacking some of the life I would conduct through them.
It didn’t initially do wonders for my self-esteem, especially with the strange looks I would get from the monsters that I had encounters with (and the look that Undyne gave it like it was a discovery that had to be analyzed and maybe fiddled with) and how Chara would protect it like it would easily fizzle away against the bullets aimed my way. But I would somehow still feel assured at looking at that cartoon heart that gave me nostalgic feelings of when I was a spunky kid that was firm in what was right or wrong before life took its toll on me. And that was what helped me keep up with my smaller companion as we headed towards the Queen and the barrier that she had sworn to demolish.
I made some amazing friends. I solved puzzles with anticipation. Sometimes gave puns with a nervous yet cheeky grin. I would give MERCY. But I also stood my ground. I challenged monsters to think of another way aside from adding more bloodshed that already darkened their history. I still cried at times at how much burden us two unexpected humans were given. But I also was protective of Chara and was driven to free monsterkind from their unfair fate.
With each FIGHT we spared and each obstacle we survived by teamwork and extending a hand of friendship, the colors of my soul became more defined, more prominent. The yellow light brightened like an awakening sun while moving in tangent with the wisps of royal blue, a combination that reminded me of the sky that I promised myself that everyone will get to see. And when we all were gifted the view of a world that felt more open to possibilities like never before, it was as if the sunlight was giving the last rays of rejuvenation to brighten my soul despite not having it beckoned from the pull of one’s magic.
Never before had I felt such happiness with myself.
I’ve yet to learn how to beckon it out with my own capability, but someday I will. Soon... Hopefully...
Of course, rain clouds arrived here and their. Humanity has yet to understand monster like Chara and I have, and who knows how long it will take. But with every opportunity I would take to have another glance at my soul, whether by letting Undyne and Papyrus give it a scan with their machines or reluctantly accepting a training session with Alphys and Sans, I would feel myself stand on steadier ground as the magical light emitting from my essence brightened my day once again.
“I’m gonna die.”
“OF COURSE NOT!”
“Tell Chara to stay in school. Continue punning in my honor. And don’t let Papyrus eat my stash of sweets.”
“I WON’T NEED TO!”
“ Least I find a way to haunt him from my grave. And extract much needed revenge on him. Y’know what, my demise won’t be so bad after.”
“HUMAN.”
“Still haven’t paid him back for putting frozen spaghetti in my sock drawer the last time he got drunk. Oh, just you wait Paps. My ghost shall strike vengeance for those tomato stains that ruined my-”
My name was called, breaking me from my ramblings induced by fatigue and thirst for cool water. A cyan flush decorated Sans’ cheekbones as he looked down at me from where I flopped on the ground.
Oh, right, socks are a subject that’s not meant to be casual with monsters. Whoops.
Coughing in his fist in awkwardness, he still maintained eye contact as he then outstretched his hand to help me up.
“PERHAPS INSTEAD YOU CAN PLAN REVENGE AFTER SOME FOOD?”
Okay. So maybe I can put aside moving onto the next world for now.
“Tacos?” I asked hopefully.
Mirth was in his eyelights as he helped me up, giving a wink. “BUT OF COURSE.”
A simple yet eager fistpump was made as I followed him to the picnic table. Today’s training was just composed of Sans and I, what with Chara being occupied with homework and Alphys absent in favor of another date with Undyne. Which I was fine with, considering how I prefer dodging bone attacks over magical axes. Yikes.
I let my head rest on my arms as I listened to Sans use his phone to use his dimensional box. By the time I decided to prop my chin against my hand, a plate of fresh tacos and a bottle of water were pushed in my direction. Grinning, I mouthed a quick ‘Thank You~’ before indulging in the slightly greasy food. Despite what people may assume about Sans, he did have a guilty pleasure of enjoying some unhealthy foods. He just likes to disguise it by pretending he cooks it for the sake of others. Oh but you’ve learned to see past that white lie. Not like he has a risk gaining weight, what with his regular workouts and lack of human-like mass outside of a skeletal frame.
“IS THERE SOMETHING ON MY FACE...?”
Well, looks like I’ve awkwardly zoned out again. An attempt to speak was halted as I first decided to swallow my portion before waving a hand dismissively.
“Nah, just envying the lack of carbs you’ll gain. I mean, these tacos technically don’t have that as well, what with magical and all but... y’know?”
Thanks severely unathletic bod. For making my chatter harder to reign in. Sans didn’t seem bothered with it as he had an assuring yet bright look on his surprisingly expressive skull.
“HUMAN. BELIEVE ME. I THINK YOUR ONE WORTHY TO BE ENVIED AS WELL.”
Oh gosh. He’s just too good to be real. Looks like I’ll once again be envying Paps with being able to live with this guys. Letting out a laugh as I shook my head, I looked down at my taco and pretended I was just flushing from exhaustion.
“I’M SERIOUS!”
“‘Kay, if you insist.”
The feeling of his shinning eyelights still focused on me had me fidget in my seat before deciding to answer.
“Well... I guess I’m not too shabby.”
A proud “MWEH” was made as another victory was made by the Magnificent Sans. Continuing to eat in peace, I chewed silently before taking a swig of water and pausing.
“I...”
Seeing Sans look back up at me, I hesitated before taking a small breath and continuing.
“I probably wouldn’t have agreed with you, if you said that to me when we first met.”
Brows were raised as his next bite was halted before he set it down and tiled his head a bit in curiosity. Well, might as well go through with this. I refrained from biting my lip and looked back down at my plate instead.
“You saw the state my soul used to be. It was a pretty accurate show of how I viewed myself. It was... hard. Seeing myself as someone who... mattered. Meant something. And could back that up.”
He wasn’t responding. And that was fine. I just... needed to say this, for some reason.
“I’ve had a good life before, but somehow I manage to work up a storm of insecurity. Some days going a bit too far than needed. I just... had difficulty believing that I was good, that I deserved what I had. Because I never found much evidence proving that.”
A hand ran through my sweaty hair that I forgot to push back with a headband as I tapped a finger on the table.
“Then I... saw my soul. It looked abnormal, sure, but seeing it turn into something so wonderful that... that was still me. It was like everything I wanted and more. Eheh... that’s mostly why I’m willingly to train every week. All that physical and emotional exertion is worth it to see my entire being again.”
The only sound was the background noise of birds chirping and distant barks of a dog being walked on the other side of the park. The lack of response was starting to get to me as I wondered if maybe I was being too honest with myself.
A small nervous laugh was made across from the table.
“I... have a confession to make.”
Looking back at the surprisingly shy look on his face as he rubbed the back of his skull, his lowered yet hesitant tone showing a more vulnerable side that I don’t think I’ve yet to personally see.
“I’m the one that’s jealous of you.”
What.
Another nervous laugh emitted from his slightly dimmed smile before his sockets showed a matching expression of unease.
“I can understand what it’s like to not feel all that confident in yourself. Since I may always feel like that.”
Concern was pushing aside my awkward worries as I sat up straighter.
“My stats are not... that impressive. Especially considering my HP.”
That was true. Back during the first fight Chara and I had against Sans, we were pretty surprised at how little strength he actually had.
HP 10/1
The only advantage he could have with his stats was having a nap to give it a little boost that only match with half of one of ours. Combined with how he could only deal 1 point of damage at a time, we thought that we’d just have to worry with not accidentally dusting him. But he proved us wrong and we ended up waking up in the shed with killer headaches.
“And... it’s always been like that.”
Seeing how he also decided to aim dulled eyelights at his food instead of my gaze, I was taken aback at how small his voice sounded.
“I am ashamed to admit, but... I envied you. But not in an entirely good way. Seeing how you were able to change while I could not, despite trying for so long. You... You make it look so easy.”
The glimmer of bioluminescent tears starting to well at the corner of his sockets kept me stunned.
“i’m sorry.”
Oh Sans...
“i guess the truth is that i really am not that m-”
SLAM
Getting up from my seat, my hands stinged a bit from how hard I hit the table as I then made my way around to his side. He said my name in worry, but whether it was for himself or for me didn’t matter as I then plopped down next to him and pulled him into my arms. His frame jerked but hardly jostled me as I held onto him some more, propping my chin on his shoulder.
“Never. Ever. Say that about yourself,” I said with as much conviction as I could muster. “Don’t you dare. Because that’s not the truth. Far from it.”
Closing my eyes as I felt tears of my own threatening to spill, I drew in a shaky breath before continuing.
“You’re one of the best people I’ve ever met. If there ever was a monster who defined those traits that embodied your souls, it would be you.”
The sounds of his bones rattling a bit under his uniform had me pause before verbally charging onwards.
“I don’t care what your stats are. And I definitely don’t think it’s fair to compare yourself to me. Because you are so much more than you give yourself credit for. You’re a great older brother Papyrus, you rightfully earned your position in the royal guard, you’ve helped Chara open up in ways that I couldn’t, a-and you are one of the b-best friends I could ever asked for.”
With how emotionally sensitive I am, it was no surprise that I was turning into a bit of a mess alongside Sans as he began holding me as well, tears of salt and magic starting to fall and dampen each other’s shoulders. We took a moment together to just let ourselves be more honest than usual with each other, having no care of what’s going on outside of this unexpected yet undoubtedly crucial stepping stone between us.
How much time that passed was unsure, but it felt like time well spent as our grip on each other eventually softened into a comfortable hold.
Pulling away a bit, he took a deep breath as he wiped away at his sockets, an action mirrored by me as I gave a wry smile.
“So...”
“... So...”
“That was a thing.”
Flushing in embarrassment, Sans looked away for a moment before a look of conviction set in his face and he looked back at me.
“But a good thing.”
Feeling my grin widened as I shrugged, I felt another tingle that seemed to be deep within my soul as if my inner light grew just a little bit brighter.
“I guess so.”
I then had to resist the urge to wince at suddenly brightened eyelights morphed into stars.
“AND SOUL ESSENTIAL TOO!”
...
...
...
“That’s it, noogie time!”
“MWEH?!”
“Oh, don’t expect to escape punishment for ruining the- HEY THAT’S CHEATING!”
“MWEH-HEH-HEH-HEH, SEE THAT I DO JUST DO THAT!”
Okay. So getting back at a teleporting skeleton may be harder than pranking his brother. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t try.
... Until I decide to just go back to eating again.

-The Title-
This show seems like it will do anything for some cheap puns. I mean it's not too bad but they do this so often it gets annoying after a while.

-The Review-

The episode starts out with Lilian saying that the contest has begun and she is talking about some of the things that the people in the first round have done and it goes to a clip of Drew and Rosellia.
0:12
Drew you JUST got here and you ALREADY flicked your hair.
Rosellia uses petal dance and then it skips to a clip of the judges giving him a..
9.9, 9.8, and 9.9
WHY NOT A PERFECT 30??? I guess a 29. 6 will have to do...
0:21
Now we have skipped to the bitch who punched May across the room last episode. Her mettecham is using high kick and that somehow gets her a 29.5.
0.28
Ah, finally a clip for May! Her beautifly uses silver wind and spins like last episode and that gets her a 25.9...
Wait what??? Why did a fucking high kick het a 29.5 and beautifly's beautiful attack only get May a 25!!!
0:53
Theme song :D
Skip to 1:41 if you don't want to hear it.
1:50
Lilian: Next up, we introduce contestant number twenty-two! Please welcome Jessica!!!
So you saved the actual long part of the person actually doing their part for Jessie? I mean I'm not too mad I just think she would've belonged more in the beginning with the three-second clips of people doing things for the contest. May of all people should be here but fine fine.
1:57
:silence:
Why is Jessie not here yet?
Lilian: Jessica? Are you okay? The crowd is waiting here for you!
1:59
Jessie: :DESCENDS FROM THE CEILING:
and then everybody cheered.
Pfft she wants to show off as much as her Pokemon. Never expected less.
2:07
May: Wow... Is that even allowed?
Mr: Remarkable: That was Remarkable!
Again I'd like to wonder what conversations May and Drew have had off screen.

Meowth: Uhhhhhg! Jessie should get an academy award for this preference
James: If anybody is deserving of an award, it's us!
So you have to make Jessie slowly descend with that tiny string... Wonder what other weird crap you'll have to do.
2:22
So If you want to skip to 3:30 this part skip to but here is a basic summary of what happens.
Jessie releases Dustox or has a bowtie on and flies in circles over Jessie and then uses tackle... by flying in one direction. Then she tells Dustox to "use rainbow" and Meowth presses a button and there is uncolored sparkly glitter everywhere. Then Jessie tells Dustox to use poison sting and add rainbow. Then a magic box appears out of nowhere and Dustox shoots poison sting at it and a bunch of glitter appears on the box, and then Jessie holds the box in her hands and the glitter has made a picture of Dustox. THEN Dustox uses whirlwind with the rainbow and it looks like this:
I think it's pretty at least :/
Then Jessie gets lifted up into the air becuase of the colored whirlwind (or so they say at 3:31 Lilian narrates by saying that she has been gently lifted by the whirlwind and James makes a salty remark.
Lilian: Wow! Jessica has been gently lifted by Dustox' whirlwind!
James: Yup! Gently lifted by my breaking back!
I thought it was funny I would've said the same thing lol
3:30
Grace: I'm not to sure about how I feel about a Pokemon being upstaged by it's coordinator...
Drew: If you ask me, she's got no class at all.
3:44
And now the judges give their opinions.
As much as I like Jessie she doesn't deserve a higher score than May.
Wait she beat Drew's score???
4:02
Wait where did Drew and Grace go? I guess I have to talk about what they say now I guess...
Ash: Can't only four people go onto the next round May?
May: :nods:
Ah don't worry May there were only 3 people that got 29 and you got a 25. You'll make it even though it defies all logic or sense! You have writers luck!
4:22
4:31
Skip to 4:47 if you don't want to hear them talk. Nothing they say is really note-worthy so don't worry.
4:47
May don't worry you defeat her in battles pretty much daily. She is a pretty easy opponent.
Battle goes as accordingly:
Dustox uses tackle (ever attack here is with rainbow so) but then Beautifly dodges and uses string-shot. Dustox uses whirlwind to blow the string away and May losses some points. Dustox then uses poison sting but then beautifly uses gust to shoot all of the thorns back at Dustox. He (Jessie's Dustox is a boy) gets hit and the bowtie that was making all of the rainbows happen gets damaged. Jessie losses points. Jessie tries using tackle but then Beautifly uses Silver wind and further damages Dustox and the bowtie. Jessie losses points. Jessie gets upset and tells Dustox to use sibeam with rainbow. The rainbow doesn't work becuase of how damaged the bowtie is. Dustox never gets around to using the sibeam and Beautifly knocks out Dustox with tackle.
7:27
Jessie just hug Dustox and calm down or something you sore loser.
7:37
Goodbye Dustox' bowtie! Now everybody knows that you were cheating with the rainbow!
7:50
Mr. Contesta: You are disqualified for cheating and I insist you leave immediately!
Uh...
She threw a golden Pokeball at the ground and apparently it's a smoke bomb...
First off why were the animators so lazy and just making the smoke bomb a Pokeball and second off...
7:55
...why did they reveal themselves after they lost???
If you want to skip this go to 8:31 and I'll just summarize what happens.
Basically they are upset they lost and claim that they are going to steal all of the Pokemon. Ash gets upset and Pikachu uses thunder. Then they blast off becuase of course they do.
8:50
Lilian: Our next battle will be between Grace and Drew!
Ya Drew go defeat that bitch who punched May across the room!
8:52
What is this you're second time to flick your hair this episode?
-Battle goes as accordingly-
Drew sends out Rosellia and Grace sends out Mettecham. Drew and grace stand there doing nothing for like 17 seconds trying to pick out battle strategies. Finally, Rosellia uses Magical leaf and Mettecham floats into the air to dodge. Mettecham then uses Ice punch and Rosellia dodges in the most fabulous way possible. Rosellia then uses petal dance but then this thing happens:
Mettecham used Confusion to stop all of the petals and it's perty.
Mettecham then throws all of the petals back to Rosellia and Drew looses points. Rosellia starts charging up a solar beam and while she does that Mettecham uses Ice punch at the ground turning most of it to ice. Rosellia finally uses her solar beam and Mettecham punches the ground again and all of the ice goes up, and makes the solar beam bounce on the ice for a while before it hits Rosellia. Drew is now at half his points. Drew starts panicking and Mettecham is able to use a high-jump-kick on Rosellia. Rosellia gets knocked out and Drew looses the battle...
Sadly he was not able to get revenge on that bitch...
Battle ends at 12:09.
12:19
Be scared May.
Be very scared.
12:40
May: If she can beat Drew like that... Then how will I beat her?
May seems to have been having some really serious self esteem issues the last few episodes. Last episode we mostly dealt with them but it's still really saddening to see her like this.
13:10
Grace (in her head): Don't think May that I'll go easy on you!
Why is Grace trying to talk to May telepathically? That's not how it works...
13:14
May (in her head): I've worked so hard to get to this point... I will not loose.
May just say it once more with confidence!
13:22
-Battle starts-
Summary of the battle:
May uses beautifly and Grace uses Mettecham. Beautifly uses tackle and Mettecham once again dodges by floating into the air. For some odd reason Beautifly fries in front of Mettecham and so that makes Mettecham use Ice punch. Beautifly uses gust and Mettecham stops the move before it hits beautifly, and Beautifly's attack succeeds. Before Mettecham hits the ground it uses confusion on itself to float and not lose as many points as it would have if it just hit the ground. Beautifly uses string shot but the Mettecham uses strongshot and made it not hit it. Then it sent the strong shot back to beautifly and got her tangled up. Mettecham uses ice punch and this time it's a direct hit and Beautifly is trapped in a bunch of ice. May begs for beautifly to be okay and break free, and it is released of the ice and the string shot. Mettecham uses high-jump-kick but then beautifly dodges. Beautifly uses silver wind on Mettecham, and Mettecham gets injured and Grace looses a munch of points. While Mettecham is on the ground, Beautifly uses tackle (swirling in circles towards Mettecham) and string-shot, which was a pretty combination... But then Mettecham uses confusion to make it look even more pretty.
THEN Beautifly WHILE STILL SPINNING and USING STRING SHOT uses Silver wind, WHILE STILL SPINNING.
Lilian called it a "Silver Tornado" which i think is adorable.
Beautifly then used tackle by spinning INTO HER TORNADO.
Grace looses points.
THEN BEAUTIFLY USES TACKLE AND WHEN METTECHAM TRIES TO DODGE MAY ALSO CALLS IN A SILVER WIND
AND BEAUTIFLY SPINS USING SILVER WIND AND IT MAKES TWO TORNADOES.
AND NOW METTECHAM CAN'T MOVE.
YEEEES
AND GRACE LOST POINTS.
Mettecham uses high jump kick and beautifly uses tackle.
They have a head on collision witch I hope didn't hurt Beautifly too much!
And the timer ran out!
And May won!
18:51
May looks at the screen for a few seconds taking in the realization that she won. She worked so hard to get here and she has been thinking so hard that she will loose and she won... I don't remember the anime too well sense I was pretty young when I last watched it but I'm sure this took care of her self esteem issues.
19:05
May: We won.. I beat Grace...
19:10
And then the realization finally hits her. She got her first ribbon and was able to get it. All of the trail and fail, she finally made it.
19:20
Just look at how proud and happy she is to finally get that ribbon. It's just so heartwarming to see!
19:49
Please don't punch May...
19:54
Grace: What are you talking about??? You fought, and you won! Try to have a little bit more confidence kay?
May: Okay.
A heart-warming and amazing way for a great character development for May. She is finally having more confidence in herself... It just makes me so happy to see her like that. It's odd to think that you only get to pick up on her having self esteem issues and stuff once you are older, becuase they are really important. I guess that might be why the pokeani has such a wide audience.
20:03
Ash: You've gotten your first ribbon May!
Max: We're really proud of you!
Brock: Congratulations.
May: That's so nice, thank you.
20:10
Drew: Well you did it May.
Everybody: huh? :turning towards Drew:
Drew: Of course if it we're me you were fighting, things might've went a whole lot different.
May (jokingly): I suppose this rose is for Beautifly right?
Drew: Ya... :flicks hair: Somthin' like that. :walks off:
Drew said most of this without trying to say something backhanded to try and ignore the fact he was being nice, he genuently wanted May to know. And that small comment May made, "I suppose this rose is for beautifly", really shows that she has been able to catch up onto his masquerade. This is a genuinely beautiful scene between Drew and May, and in my personal opinion, this where where they start actually having romantic feelings for one-another.
Also I'd like to congratulate Drew on that rose he threw. His eyes were closed and it looks as if he threw it straight up into the air and it landed right onto May's contest ribbon case. He's done other spectacular throws but this is beautiful.
20:30
Max: That guy is still as stuck-up as ever.
Ash: Well, I'll tell you one thing: I'm totally physicked and ready for my next badge!
20:40
May: :turns over to her friends:
May: I hear ya' Ash, I'm totally physicked too for my next contest!
:episode ends:
Just look at how happy she is to have that rose. It is so heartwarming to see that happy look on her face and that rose in her hand.
-Conclusion-
I already said this during the review, but in my honest opinion this is the episode where May and Drew start having feelings for each other. Just that last conversation with them both and all of these other things make me say this. And I'm also so glad May has finally gotten over her self-esteem issues. You don't pick it up when you are younger but once you are older you realize how much she actually doubt herself in those episodes. It makes me finally realize why so many people love the Pokemon anime. They have a bunch of jokes for kids to understand and a bunch of actual problems that the teens will understand. Even when they do point out some of these things about the more serious problems they try to make it funny for the kids. I could give out many examples, but I won't. The one I will give out, is actually Contestshipping itself. When you are younger, you just see Drew being a douche to May and giving her roses every once in a while, when you’re older, you actually see a romantic couple and all of the things about it you hadn’t seen before. I almost feel bad to use this as an example, but usually Advancedshippers are considerably younger, and won’t be able to pick up all of the Contestshipping subtext.
Overall: This was an amazing episode and it makes me want to watch more episodes with May. She has always been and probably always will be my favorite character.
#contestshipping#May#pokemon may#trainer may#omg how dare i never think of useing her japasies name in the tags#haruka#drew#pokemon drew#trainer drew#shuu#pokemon#pokeani#shuuharu#drew x may#may x drew#drew and may#may and drew

Mean and Skeptical Comments about the Astrological Signs
What's the Trouble with Them? Aries If you ever see a trouble seeker, he or she will surely be an Aries! If you hate an Aries for acting in whatever way, don’t bother to seek revenge. They don’t need a curse or a vicious trap to suffer like their poor victims, as Arians are masters of messing with trouble. One morning, an Arian rises up, finds himself in good shape and perfect health, so he decides to “seize the day!” Oh my! They believe so deeply in their capability to do anything that pops into their minds. They are also extremely capable of justifying their poor choices. Don’t ever try to explain to them the possible consequences of their plans. Just wait and see! An Arian will never disappoint the passionate grudge-holders that wait for the spectacular fall of the infallible hero. Taurus Any mishap that befalls Taureans will be a result of their addiction to pleasure. God forbid that I would ever deny their sensible attitude toward worldly matters. They are the unquestionable pillars of the human conscience and sanity. Indeed, their down-to-earth essence is the very quality that improves their tendency to overestimate the cravings of the flesh. Well, don’t you know that our strengths are also our weaknesses? Taureans like to collect nice things and keep them in their lives, no matter what! Unfortunately, such deep attachments are the stones that pave the Taurean road to hell. Their loved ones also take a part in this tendency to objectify. Taureans stick to their objects of desire until they get so sick and tired of them that they cannot even bear to remember their existence. The moment when they start to despise something is so worth seeing! Gemini Any misfortune that happens to them is caused by them not handling their “possessions” with due care and attention. They reach out to grab almost everything that sparkles, asking for them ceaselessly. People mostly just give them whatever they ask for, just so they can have some peace! Because they are filled with a meaningless abundance, they get dizzy and become unable to behave properly. You see? It’s not “their” fault that they cannot make good use of anything! Oh, the burden of an unmanageable pile of possessions and an unbearable amount of attention! Of course, they should fly away toward the nearest colorful flower. Geminis miss all chances to establish a strong foundation on anything just because of the overly demanding people around them. Actually, Geminis do not really give a damn about these missed opportunities, because they are already busy troubling another person with their problems. Cancer The main trouble with Cancerians is their lightheadedness … Oh yeah, sorry! I meant their unique and contemplative way of thinking! They only get a little lost while trying to perfectly define and figure out every aspect of a matter. Thanks to some “mean and unfriendly” astrologers, Cancerians are famous for lacking a proper sense of timing! Well, these are merely vicious accusations by dark souls that cannot perceive Cancer’s irresistible need for wholeness! Let me open a window to the undiscovered depths of a Cancerian’s mind with the aid of an example: A Cancerian can spend half an hour shopping for the perfect shoes to match his or her clothes for a very important meeting, a meeting that began ten minutes ago! You should never be surprised when a Cancerian comes out of the shop with a new suit that matches the old shoes. You should also never even consider criticizing this behavior, because it would be very unbalancing for such a gentle soul on the verge of such an important meeting, a meeting for which he or she is already late. Leo Well, any problem that casts a shadow on the sunny, shiny world of Leos results from their stubborn need to patronize every living soul in reach. What else should a Leo do other than to give a precise definition of the expected outcome? Why should such royal beings bother themselves with the boring technicalities of other people’s concerns and limitations? How could they possibly bear the cold reality that even the most important people in the world cannot always get what they want? Or should they just accept that they might not be that important? Seriously? Leos are merry people, but they can be ruthless when exercising power. They know best, period! Instead of arguing with them, people should get up on their humble feet and do as they are told! When life gets lonely and boring, Leos want to cheer up! The king or queen needs to feel the warmth of human closeness and the tender security of unconditional acceptance. Phrases like “Emperors can be lonely too!’’ must come from the grim moments that are experienced in the utter silence of an empty palace. Virgo Every unfortunate thing happens to Virgos by pure accident! Yes, of course, what else could it be? Virgos put every little thing in their realm under strict control, so there’s no space for unwanted errors! Whatever mishaps occur despite a Virgo’s determined efforts must come from the bad influence of outsiders or unknown factors. Virgos cannot bear the burden of doing something wrong, and if anything should go wrong, they can only be the victims! Failures shake their very souls, and they find it very hard to repair their “already low” self-esteem. Still, pure Virgos immediately start to define the evils and eliminate their effects on their perfect setup. Sometimes the Heavens feel mercy for these beloved, hardworking control freaks and decide to spoil them with minor miracles. However, Virgos don’t like surprises, and if they would find a fancy package on their doorstep, they would call the police and ask for the bomb squad. If they won a car in a competition, they would just complain about the paperwork and the additional expenses. Libra Inertia is the mother of all evils, and this is especially true for Librans. Everything happens to Librans because of their tendency to avoid any unwanted effort. Librans deliberately delay making difficult decisions and taking critical actions. They wait for things to happen, so they can keep their hands clean and make the right move to maintain their preferred position. They have many such open-ended issues, which are not seen by observers. Librans are extremely cool and calm on the surface, but internally, they are like an untidy room where no one else can find a place to sit or make a move. They freeze life in their own unique manner, so they can avoid confrontations and focus on the things that give them the most pleasure or excitement. When a crisis blows up, they skillfully mock the resulting scene! An admirer will surely soon be there to handle the situation and pamper our “poor victim.” In other words, nothing much happens to Librans, but the people who get involved with them should be ready to deal with their problems. Scorpio Boundless desires and a relentless will urge Scorpios to try any possible means to succeed. Would anyone need any other curse? Scorpios are usually coolheaded. They may take offense very easily, but they do not seek immediate revenge! While everyone is going crazy, they remain capable of observing the situation and finding a way out of trouble. The solutions they come up with may cause some unwanted complications for others, however, but hey, that’s life! They may feel guilty inside, yet they won’t shed many tears of regret or make many apologetic gestures. Know that this indifference is not the worst thing you can experience with Scorpios. When you see them in a state of total disillusionment, or reaching a point of no return, get lost! From that moment on, there is no such thing as the “Scorpio’s trouble.” Scorpios turn into Zippo lighters, and the trouble becomes entirely yours. Sagittaurus These never take no for an answer! This is why they become embroiled in every possible trouble, meaning trouble for the people who dare to refuse them. No one other than a Sagittarian could ask, ‘’Why?’’ in such a relentless manner! Even when they hear someone say no to another person, they may stop just to play their game, and say, “Hang on. Why do you reject this? Tell me, and maybe I can show you why you should say yes.” Sagittarians become tense like a bow until they find the weak point of their target. Once they discover it, the target starts to feel this tension, because Sagittarians do not limit their attacks. They hug, they bug, they beg, and they finally make you say, “YES!” And this is the turning point. Suddenly, the wind calms, the attention fades, and the intentions disappear. The Sagittarian has already set his or her mind on another target and gone! Capricorn It all happens thanks to Capricorn’s uncanny desire to play the savior. Why on earth do they have to be so dutiful? Why can they never turn down a call or, better still, switch their phones off at night and when on vacation? Why must they always have an opinion on how to do it better, even when they were never asked for an opinion? The answer is simple: They don’t know a better way of living other than trying to be useful! They must always be in charge or at least ready to take action. Capricorns are the only group of people in this world who feel weird when they are relaxed, experiencing a sort of depression when their agenda looks empty for the coming week. Under these circumstances, it seems they deserve trouble, because they subconsciously crave it! Aquarius Nothing other than their “concerns” is a source of trouble for Aquarians! It’s surprising, isn’t it? They have a weird obsession with foreseeing things, and this is because they secretly want to play God and direct events according to their own scenario. Thus, they feel a need to analyze each and every detail and take odd-looking measures to avoid unwanted twists of fate. Where an Aquarian is involved, be prepared to hear last-minute requests to correct trivial details that seem to have major importance to him or her. Aquarians may even suggest a major change in the course of something, or request it to be cancelled, for reasons not apparent to anyone else! It seems as if they look at things with the purpose of finding trouble, so they cause problems for the people they mingle with. Yeah, they’re the poorly appreciated saviors of humankind, doing good at the expense of their popularity. Pisces Oh my! It is simply goodwill paving the road to hell for Pisces. As you may well know, they look somewhat absentminded and too depressed to be interested in worldly matters. Indeed, their indifference is a gift from God! This is their natural protection that keeps them from getting messed up with trouble. Feeling good is never a good thing for a Pisces! When they feel good, their feet no longer touch the earth. They walk over the mean dirt of life as if they were floating on the holy waters of the Heavens, feeling ready to fall in love with anything they see. When Pisceans fall in love with something, the world stops turning. The moment they feel happy and lucky, Pisceans lose the ability to develop a critical approach, avoid focusing on facts, and form all their plans based on “angelic inspirations,” getting lost in the flow in the process. From that point on, anything that doesn’t come to a Piscean’s mind takes place in his or her life! Read the full article
