Daisuke handles it like a champ. In the way that means he very much doesn't.

Absolute mess, apologizing profusely as he backs away, shielding his eyes dramatically. Hits the sides of the door on his way out. Both sides. He pin-balled.

Recovers fast but can't look at you in the eyes for a long time without picturing you like that.

"So how does it work when he's, y'know?"

So curious that it's not even funny.

Tries to get Curly to tell him the facts but Curly just does his laugh rattle

Honestly, he doesn't treat either of you differently, but he grins SUPER wide each time you go in to check in on Curly

May or may not time you just to tease you about it (gets so red if you tease him back)

Processes then immediately walks out

Knew about you and curly's relationship/situation so he isn't surprised.

But you'll get his fatherly look of disappointment.

Doesn't tell anybody else because he knew it was consensual from the sounds you both made (he definitely asked Curly afterward just to make sure)

If you take a lot of shift work watching curly, he'll intercept and roll his eyes, "Jesus, let the poor guy rest"

Freezes, processes, then storms right up, eyes wild and voice high. "What are you doing?!"

She all but separates you from curly as fast as she can, tears in her eyes.

Curly sure as hell never protected her from Jimmy but she wouldn't let you abuse one of her patients.

Shift work with Curly is outright canceled for everyone. At least until Curly conveys that no, he very much wanted that, (head nods go a long way, people).

Anya is still suspicious and weary. It's months before she stops hovering by the door, but a part of her is relieved, too.

The absolute last person you want walking in.

Stands there like a creep, eyes assessing. Memorizing.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" He asks layer with a wrinkled nose, as if you're the one with the problem.

Honestly becomes kind of bitchy about the whole ordeal

Watches you a lot more intently that it becomes uncomfortable

Definitely imagines how you looked on that cot with the former captain

Passive aggressive with you afterwards, but fortunately, because nobody is really alone anymore, he can't do anything to you about it. If he had been attracted to you before and the crash never happened, you'd be in hot water.

Curly, however, gets the short end of the stick. Have you heard the audio of what Jimmy does to Curly the second time when giving him pills? Yep, he beats him more routinely

After all, how is it fair that Curly has doomed them all but still gets the glory?

really just taking in the scenery. also brought trekking poles despite the terrain being relatively even?

stands in front of the park bulletin board with his hands on his hips reading about all the happenings in the community and the local fauna that can be found nearby. everyone else has been waiting to move on for 10 minutes now

jimmy

this is the last place he wants to be. it doesn't help that he is getting eaten alive by mosquitos. like absolutely destroyed. he will complain about it and he will make it everyone else's problem

"you hear about that one serial killer in the 70's who hid the bodies of twelve victims in this very forest? isn't that fucked up?"

eventually finds a really long stick to walk with and just smacks it against every tree and rock the crew passes. its an outlet for his frustrations

anya

packed a light lunch consisting of cheese, crackers and trail mix. everyone mistakenly thinks they're for the whole group and helps themselves when she takes them out. she's reluctant but at this point just feels awkward about the whole situation and lets it go

constantly checking her fitbit to make sure she's keeping a good pace on the trails. gotta keep that heart rate up

also has one of those plant identification apps that she's trying to fill up so she's constantly stopping for quick photos

swansea

walks ahead of everyone, looking up and down at the trees and giving thoughtful nods all the while. nobody knows what this means but they make sure to give him his space

was a scout when he was younger and can tell you the name of a bird just from its call alone

brought his swiss army knife along and is actively looking for an opportunity to use it (he doesn't. this is a state park not the set of survivor)

daisuke

puts strange berries in his mouth because he thinks its funny. its slightly less funny when he "randomly" starts getting itchy and sluggish after the fact

finds a toad and carries it with him for the next mile before swansea tells him to put it down

the insatiable urge to climb a tree is consuming him beyond recognition. his eyes keep darting toward the treeline like a sailor to a siren's call

CW: spoilers for mouthwashing, Jimmy.

Curly is not perfect, in fact, after Jimmy, he is undoubtedly the worst person to step foot on the Tulpar. However, by the end of the game, I consider him to be fully redeemed.

The reason Curly frustrated me so much in the beginning is because of one scene in particular. The hallucination sequence leading up to his conversation with Jimmy in the cockpit. You know... The one where he literally walks right through warning signs just to get to the cockpit. The one where he barely even notices the blaring alarms and the billions of flashing warning signs as well as the knee-deep pool of a red liquid we can only assume is blood.

This scene barely gets talked about because of the much more relevant dead pixel conversation, but I think the reason this one is kind of pushed to the back is because of how on the nose it is.

However, to me, this one is more important because it highlights how differently Curly approaches the idea of taking responsibility compared to Jimmy.

Jimmy will do anything to avoid facing the music for his actions. He will stop at nothing to avoid having to do the right thing, usually opting for what he perceives to be the easier way out. Crashing the ship seems like a much more pleasant option as opposed to taking responsibility for what he did to Anya as well as the effects of it (the baby) which to him are even worse because he knows he can likely get Curly to keep the situation on the down low, but now that there's a baby involved, there is nothing Curly can do to stop Anya from rightfully demanding financial support (which she will no doubt need) not to mention the likely possibility of Anya passing away giving birth to this child given she is the only medic on board with limited tools. There is nothing Curly can do to explain that away, so Jimmy does what he believes is necessary to avoid dealing with that.

In short, Jimmy will not only run from his responsibilities, he will throw more obstacles in their way to stop them reaching him.

Meanwhile, Curly's approach to his responsibilities is a lot more subtle which is why people are more quick to defend him.

Instead of running away, Curly pretends he can't see them or he'll straight up turn his back to them. Why? To keep the peace. Jimmy is afraid of taking responsibility, but Curly is too lazy to.

He already has a lot on his plate, piloting the Tulpar and having to answer to catastrophes here and there (courtesy of Daisuke) as well as receiving the news from Pony express which he stupidly decides to share too early. Am I saying this to defend him? Absolutely not. This is to demonstrate his mentality, so when Anya comes to him with warnings about Jimmy, he doesn't want to hear it, he just wants to say whatever will get her to leave him alone. When Jimmy is obviously angry about being fired with no plan for his future while Curly gets good recommendations and the options he'd been wanting, Curly tries to comfort him with the same impersonal lines everyone uses in this situations. 'we'll figure out together' you'll move forward one step at a time' those infuriating phrases that are only good for pissing people off further.

In fact, Curly gets so used to using these shitty, lazy responses, that he just breezes through conversations using them without caring about what anyone is saying which is why he not only overlooks Anya's warnings, but he also overlooks Jimmy's concerning language like when he talks about how instead of going home and dealing with the Anya situation, the Tulpar could just be remembered as a tragedy with no one surviving to tell the tale. Curly asks no questions because he doesn't give a fuck about what Jimmy is saying. He does not care.

Jimmy knows that Curly is just that checked out that he can get away with pretty much anything.

So, why is Curly redeemed in my eyes?

For a few reasons.

1) as I mentioned before, part of his dismissive behaviour is a result of Jimmy's conditioning. Jimmy is the one who made him this way. He managed to cement his image in Curly's head as a positive one, so why would he ever question him?

2) Curly takes responsibility in the end by talking about all the things he should've done and acknowledging the things he's done that could potentially make him a villain. He blames himself as much as he does Jimmy.

3) it's safe to say he's been punished enough. Not only did he become a helpless meat sack, but he also had to watch Anya end her life at his bedside, taking their painkiller supply with her, he watched Daisuke agonisingly drag himself across the floor to open the medical room door which I can only imagine was just... Gut wrenching for Curly, then he sees Swansea, axe in hand, fully ready to murder Jimmy for what he did to Daisuke and Anya, not to mention Jimmy sawing his leg off followed by feeding it to him.

Let's talk about that for a second while we're at it.

Jimmy's thoughts when doing that are 'someday he'll thank me', but I would hate it for anyone to believe a word from this man. I believe Jimmy only did everything he did to Curly post crash was to inflict as much physical pain on him as possible. When he says 'pain is how we know we're alive' it's not some attempt to be clever or deep or comforting in any way, it's his way of making his intention of hurting Curly as much as he possibly can very clear and apparent. He beats him after giving him the painkillers at some point. That's not someone who cares about Curly's comfort. Him feeding him his own leg is not his own twisted way of showing he cares for him, it's a hateful gesture. He wants to punish Curly for being better than he is and having a better life because he believes he's entitled to getting the same thing even though he doesn't put in the same work.

Avoids getting into fights/needless bickering. And when i mean avoid, he deadass runs into the medbay if things are heating up. Talks with Curly a bit.

Talks with Anya more than Pre-Crash. He's worried about her.

Dont leave him alone with his thoughts.

RELATIONSHIPS

Anya

Dess loves talking to her! Provides a big sister figure throughout the entire duration of the delivery haul, and he just loves spending his free time with her.

He rates Anya a solid 10/10.

Curly

One of his close friends! Curly's the reason why he got into Pony Express in the first place (working on Dess' backstory rn SHHH it'll make sense later). If not Talking to Anya, Dess is usually shown conversing with Curly. Whether it be about life back on Earth, or just casual banter.

Dess also used to have a tiny itty bitty crush on him but it doesn't matter now.

He rates Curly a 9/10.

Swansea

Intimidated by him at first, but Dess loves to hear what Swansea has to say when they talk together! Also he thinks Swansea being a sneakerhead is pretty silly. He's an uncle figure for Dess.

Daisuke

Oh, whoozers, what a riot! Dess loves Daisuke's optimism and shenanigans. Talking with the guy is always such a blast, there's no awkward moment between them. Dess also makes a lot of doodles with Daisuke on his free time.

Dess, or Desmond is the Navigator Officer in the Tulpar Space Freighter. He mainly works inside the cockpit, steering the ship when Curly and Jimmy is busy (Which is kinda rare). He's about 32-35 years old, and he absolutely LOVES talking with the others! You can usually see him talking to the others, sometimes he's a bit anxious about interacting, though. Sometimes.

He didn't want to be a Navigator in the first place, obviously. He wanted to be a Marine Biologist, or at LEAST an Aquaculturist, but alas, the winds of fate has led him to work for Pony Express.

He's a part of Curly's friend group back on earth, and that obviously extends to being friends with Jimmy. Curly's another reason why he decided to work for Pony Express too-

Anyways! If you talk about him about fish, chances are he'll think you're pretty cool.

Dess is Anemic!

Dess has prescription glasses, but he hates wearing them; claims that it's too itchy on the nose.

At some point, he had fallen asleep.

His lanky body curled up in the chair as best as it can. The green lights, the general noise of the ship, and his exhaustion finally catching up with him.

Jimmy finds himself thrust back the past (future?)

He's all alone. The dim red lights of the ship hurt his eyes. It's quiet and cold, not a living soul left on the ship but him.

Guilt

Sadness

Worry

They fill him to the brim. He tugs at his blood-soaked coveralls before lunging foreword and puking. No, why is he back here?! (Punishment)

He tries to scream, but no sound comes out. His heart pounds in his chest, and his vision blurs as tears stream down his face. The only noise now is the blood rushing through him as he eyes the gun in his hand. He's shaking now, laughing silently as he puts the barrel to his temple and-

Jimmy jolts awake and finds himself tumbling from his chair and hitting his chin against the chunky console in front of him. He feels the pain and the wet feeling of blood start to bubble from the bite on his lip.

"Fuck..."

He quickly looks around before relaxing. Jon seems to have finished his task and left. Good, he wouldn't want the kid to see him like this.

He lets himself sit in that strange angle for a moment before getting up. He doesn't bother wiping away the blood that is now dripping down his chin. That nightmare of his still echoing in his mind.

He shakes his head and leaves the cockpit and heads for the medbay. Jimmy doubts there'll be anything useful but it doesn't hurt to check, he's just anxious to get back to Curly.

Even though the doors to the medbay open automatically, he still gives a knock to the frame once he sees that Anya is, in fact, in there. He doesn't bother to wait for her to acknowledge him before striding in and immediately starts to rummage through things without a word.

Every now and then, Jimmy glances over at Anya as if he's nervous of all things.

Red like the glimmer on the knife, red like his screaming, like his bitten tongue, like the hot wet thing slipping past his teeth oh god- All at once the half-remembered memories of his nightmares of another life hit and Curly doubles over, retching, clinging to the arm of his seat in the cockpit to avoid falling into the mess he makes of the floor as he chokes on bile. Dimly, he can hear @cptjimmy asking what's wrong with him...but he can't do anything but hold on for dear life as the words sear themselves into his brain. Can't blame the Jim man for having a taste...
