Something that's really important for Dick and Damian's relationship is that Dick didn’t connect with Damian by teaching him the power of love and hugging him all the time or whatever. Damian is a ten year old who was fundamentally raised to be extremely good at his profession. Dick, who we must remember was also a child raised to be extremely good at his profession, does not try to tell Damian that being good at his job is wrong or that it’s not what children should be thinking about. Because how reductive and condescending would that be? Damian would hate someone who told him that he shouldn’t or couldnt be a fighter because of his age. And he would never be able to connect with whats "right or wrong" for a person of his age, because his entire frame of reference is about what he's capable of.

What Dick gives Damian is the understanding that being the best doesn't mean being alone. They can work together. That accepting help and having a partner is okay. That he can be wrong or still have room to grow, that he could get knocked down and that Dick would still wait for him to get up. They connect because Dick can still teach him something.

by teaformiles After an argument over their robin times with Jason, Dick Grayson goes on patrol and ends up MIA. Jason, looking for his (sorta..) brother accidentally runs into a new villain, who seems more like a confused kid than a cold-blooded assassin. To make matters worse, the boy shares a strange resemblance with Dick, and wears the uniform of the dangerous assassin, Deathstroke. AKA: Jason and Dick get into a fight, Dick winds up getting his age re-winded and turned into Renegade. Dick, who's memories are now reset to that time, has to confront his fears, and Jason has to deal with his (now smaller) brother, who wasn't so much of a goody-two-shoes as he thought. Ooh, what if it's an exchange of ecto thing going on? For some reason, rotating around the ecto is necessary to keep it vitalized or something? All the bats are liminal, but tim is the one whose ecto is most like the pits because of brucequest, so that's subconsciously most familiar to damian. (Jason would be a MUCH better fit, but bruce forbade sparring between the two because his poor dad heart can't handle how dangerous they appear to be to each other.)

Could explain jason's anger issues and how they tend to blow up more around family - the dude is literally starving for an ecto-exchange and has isolated himself from the rest of his fraid. Of course, the moment he enters the manor, his instincts are gonna push him into absorbing as much ecto as possible. But without *knowing* that's what he needs, it just feels like emotional overstimulation that erupts into anger (he's pulling ecto towards himself but nobody is pulling it back to balance it out and help regulate it.) Then he feels guilty because he doesnt understand his own instincts and self isolates again.

Might also explain why tim is chronically exhausted. Is he getting enough sleep? No, but if his ecto wasnt being constantly sucked dry by damian (tim isnt doing a proper ecto-exchange because he thinks he's fighting for his life instead of social enrichment), he'd be doing a lot better than he is. (Hc that his liminal ability is to not need [much] sleep.)

Dick, the one to actively try to interact and maintain a relationship with everyone in the fraid, has the most regulated ecto. Being emotionally competent (relatively) makes him healthier (marginally).

Cass's first language is the language of ecto-exchange, so she understands, even if she has no way to articulate the concept to the rest of the family. She tries to keep everyone regulated but is only one person, and a proper exchange requires dedicated one-on-one time.

Bruce started out extremely stagnant but got healthier over the years as he adopted more kids and enlarged the fraid. More ecto entities in the fraid means more exchanging of ecto. Adoptionitis was literally a biological drive for him, lol.

Maybe damian runs away and goes to bother jason for a few days. Suddenly, not only is he doing better, but so is jason. Dick and tim conspire to keep bruce from finding out about jason and damian sparring. Are they using real weapons? Yes. Does it look like either one of them could lose a limb at any given moment? Also yes. But goddamn if both of them arent happier, and tim needs a few days for his ecto levels to restabilize - i mean he needs to get more sleep. Yeah.

(The rest of the bats get enough exchange from regular training and sparring. Jason and damian are more liminal and have larger ecto reserves, requiring more time dedicated to ecto-exchange to maintain health.)

Danny is eventually gonna find an entire fraid surviving on conflicting instincts and sheer stubbornness without any knowledge of their real natures and hoo boy is that gonna be a mess and a half to clean up.

Damian NEEDS to fight. It’s a part of his ghost/liminal biology. It’s similar to food for humans, if they don’t do it on repeated intervals they’ll ��starve”. Well, Damian gets into a fight with Tim. This has happened many times. To Damian it’s a drive he needs to fulfill. To everyone else Damian is just attacking Tim for no rhyme or reason. Bruce puts his foot down and grounds him. Damian tries to prove to Bruce that he can truly not be confrontational.

Big issue: he’s unknowingly starving his liminal/ghost side and it’s visibly apparent too. He’s more lethargic, his cheeks are sunken in, he gets injured more easily. The other Bats realize something is very very wrong but no one knows why. (I wrote this v tired this might not make sense)

Oh, crap my bad, I thought your question was all about what if Injustice Damian went to the Rebirth main universe and saw Rebirth Damian with an adoring family. I mean, I had a headcanon for it and everything…okay, you know what i’ll run with that anyway, so! I’ll answer a question you never asked!

Scenario: injustice Damian ends up in the Rebirth universe and sees Rebirth Damian with his family and friends

First thought? Injustice Damian will be impossibly angry. Then he’ll get incredibly jealous. Then…he’ll absolutely loathe his Rebirth counterpart and all those who love him. 

That should have been me…it WAS me, until my father betrayed me, until all those I knew left me even when I was fighting for justice. (Superman’s authoritarian idea of justice, anyway). 

Family? Friends? Love? That version of me doesn’t know what it’s like. He doesn’t deserve any of this. He doesn’t get to have any of it. I’ll make him see the world the way it has treated real heroes like me.

Injustice Damian goes all out villain and attacks the Bat family. He’s battle-hardened, the adult perfected version of Damian’s skills. Rebirth Damian is simply no match, and since he knows every single one of the Bat family’s weaknesses, he takes them down one by one. The Bat family is taken by surprise, and they aren’t prepared to deal with an adult version of Damian at first. But then, they have something Injustice Damian never had - Jon. He helps turn the tide of battle until the Bat family rallies and drives Injustice Damian away.

After that, Injustice Damian becomes one of their most dangerous enemies. Poping out when you least expect him, determined to kill the Bat fam and make Rebirth Damian suffer. They can’t decide what to do about Injustice Damian, they’re conflicted, should he be saved or…should he be ended? Unless they can decide, he’s gonna pick them off one by one.

Jason steps up. He takes his mask and faces the family.

“I’m going to deal with him,” He says firmly.

“You can’t deal with him alone, Todd!” Damian chided. “You’ll definitely get murdered by my far superior older self.”

Jason smirked. if he hadn’t known any better, he would’ve thought that Damian actually worried about him.

“I’m the only one who knows the way he thinks,” Jason explained. “He’s exactly the way I was when I…when I first took the mantle of Red Hood. I’m the only one who can get through to him.”

“And if you can’t?” Bruce asked.

Jason put his helmet on. “Then I’m the only one who can give him peace.”

Jason found Injustice Damian by acting as bait. The adult assassin had planned to ambush him, but Jason was prepared. Damian had the skill, the discipline, and the murderous intent. But Jason…he knew how to play dirty.

Jason parried sword strikes, then seemingly lets his guard down for a feint and punishes Damian’s predictable attacks. He grabs Damian’s sword by the blade and tugs it forward and then smashes the assassin on the face with a fierce headbutt. Damian growls and throws a smoke bomb to regain his composure in the shadows.

“You’re angry. I can feel that,” Jason says sympathetically. “I was like you once. I wanted nothing more than to slit Bruce’s throat. I wanted to wring Tim’s neck for being my replacement. I wanted to stab Grayson for being the one he loved best. “

“You know nothing about me, Todd!” Damian shouted from above. 

He dived for Jason’s neck, but Jason avoided getting decapitated by deflecting with his gauntlet and sending an electric shock through Damian’s arms.

“Where I come from, I stood for what was right! We took care of criminals permanently to bring lasting peace! Then my father turned on me, and because of him, the world turned its back on peace and cast me aside!” he continued.

“You want to be a hero, I get that.” Jason parried a flurry of slashes and sidestepped. He twisted behind Damian and yanked his hair and kneed the young man in the spine.

“Whatever happened, whatever you did, you can find redemption here. I can help you! I mean, even I found my place with Bruce and the rest despite all I did to him and the family.”

Damian came at him again, but Jason fell to the floor on his back and planted both his feet on Damian’s chest and sent him hurtling backward. He growled.

“You’re deluded!” he screamed. “All of you! He’ll turn on you just like he did on me. Better that I kill him first, then my younger self will understand that he’s being held back. And you, Todd, you’re nothing! You’re just another criminal I need to kill.”

“Damian, I'm your brother,” Jason said one last time.

“I’m not your Damian,” the young man spat back. “I will kill you and the rest of the family. Then I’ll kill that deluded child who passes off as me in this world. I’ll show Gotham what true justice is.”

Jason lowered his arms in resignation. He knew that the time for words had passed.

“I guess you don’t know who I am,” Jason said calmly as he casually walked toward the assassin. “The Joker killed Robin. When I came back from the Lazarus Pit, I put on this mask and killed Jason Todd.”

“Then who’s the man I'm about to kill?” Damian sneered.

“Me?” Jason shrugged. “I’m the Red Hood.”

Damian dashed toward Jason. With a quick fluid motion, Jason threw his handgun and hit the adult Damian between the eyes, and he fell to the ground. Moments later, Jason’s shadow loomed over him, the barrel of his other gun pointed at his chest.

“I’m sorry, but I have a family to protect. Be at peace, brother.”

A flock of crows squawked and scattered to the air as a single gunshot pierced the night.
