OMG ok so sorry for the spam but ur ART!!!,!!,!:&: yamato n kakashi r two of my fav characters and i NEVER see any yamatos fans like this 😭 u draw yama so fuckin well ima cry yo
but like seriously ur art is SO GOOD and so so so cute i LOVE the way u draw all the characters so much! i havent stalked ur whole blog yet (doin that after i submit this Lmfaooo) but i hope to see iruka in ur style sumtime!
idk who u ship in naruto yet lol so im curious do u ship yamakaka or kakaruka?? ima cry if u do cus that means ur beautiful style is gonna draw those beautiful babiessshdksk but obviously no worries if not LOL my bad for this super weird message tho im sleep deprived but also so so happy over ur art. thank u for existing :,-) <3
thank you!!! i’m glad you like my art so much! i’ve drawn a couple irukas then that you might like! (and i plan to draw more, he’s very fun to draw, and i’ve got a strong vision of him sdkghdskgh, the only reason he doesn’t come up much is bc this is mostly a yamato centric blog and he and iruka haven’t interacted much yet) I’m honestly not a very shippy person! Most of the stuff I have on my blog is very platonic and focused on friendship and/or found family dynamics, because that’s the kind of content I like and am interested in creating! That said, i don’t dislike those ships, they can be very well done! I’m just incredibly picky about what kinds of content I consume and how the relationships within it are portrayed. A lot of romantic content tends to drop the platonic bonds, or relegate them to lesser importance, and i don’t care for that much—my ideal content is honestly “casefic” or mission-fic. i want the drama...the intrigue...the bonding, but with professionalism and difficult decisions...also i like plots that feel dangerous and high stakes...
#hellboyvibes#yamswers#i'm really very picky honestly...#for example i drop any fic which disrespects kakashi's friendship with gai sdgkjhgh LIKE. i know he's not a lot of people's cup of tea?#a lot of people are uninterested in him bc he is so boisterous and loud...but he is kakashi's best friend! that's important to me#but there are a lot of fics out there where people don't want to write gai so they have kakashi call him annoying SDGKHJSGJKSDHG#like yes he absolutely teases gai but to ever assume he finds gai genuinely a bother? or a burden to be friends with? bonk bonk bonk#get outta here with that...foolishness...i dont wanna see it!!!!#i also dont like either kakashi or yamato having any romantic endeavors during anbu...especially not with each other#i think anbu is such an unhealthy space to cultivate a self in—i really only wanna see friendships during anbu times...#and theyre both such incredibly cautious people when it comes to affecting the lives of others—i think they would understand that well#but u see what i mean? i'm very picky and i favor friendships over all else sdkgjhsdkgjhsdgkh#i do have a soft spot for kakashi gai and yamato all moving in together in their like fourties or something though...a funny family of dads#once yamato is done with his whole weird orochimaru mid life family crisis thing#they would all balance each other out really well i think...Yamato clearly loves playing ''the sole remaining braincell'' in a group#or the tsukkomi/straight man etc etc#and kakashi and gai make each other INCREDIBLY silly and mischievous. so they would have a LOT of fun together#and on top of that gai has really good emotional intuition/observation AND communication skills...which balances out kakashi and yamato#who have terrible anbu habits of keeping things to themselves and hoping nobody notices#and kakashi...well he has eight dogs. that probably counts for something!#im kidding but also its my god given right to bully kakashi

In between training the kids about chakra we had to help Tazuna with protecting his bridge. The next morning I sent Sakura with Tazuna along with Y/n, since Sakura was the most advanced in this already. I knew the two of them would be fine without me so I stayed behind to make sure the boy were focusing on their training.
As sundown broke the boys were still at it. They would soon become exhausted, but knowing the two of them, as long as one of them pushed on the other would push on, wanting to best each other. I knew the boys were probably at each other's throats, but I needed to get some rest, so I headed back to the hut, telling them to come back when they had had enough.
When Y/n and Sakura walked through with Tazuna I was relieved to say the least. I wrapped Y/n into my arms and kissed her forehead. "How was your day?"
"Quiet. He had one of his builders quit, but nothing other than that." She looked up at me and pushed her lips toward me. I leaned down and kissed her. "How was yours?"
"Uneventful. The boys are slowly making progress with the tree, but they're too worried about surpassing the other to focus enough."
Y/n sighed. I figured as much. I know how competitive my brother can be."
Sasuke and Naruto came through the door a couple minutes later and we all sat down at the table to enjoy a meal prepared by Tazuna's daughter, Tsunami. I've never seen the boys scarf down food so fast. Tazuna seemed happy to have company. "This is fantastic, it's been a long time since we've had this many guest around our table."
Both boys stood up and held their bowls in the air, glaring at the other as they spoke together. "I want some more!" After they yelled both of them turned sideways and threw up all over the floor.
Y/n glared at Sasuke and Sakura started to yell. "Don't eat so much if you're just going to puke it back up!"
Sasuke ignored his sister's glares and spoke again. "I have to eat."
Naruto talked through gritted teeth. "And I have to eat more than him. It's the only possible way to beat him."
I crossed my arms and looked at the both of them. "That's true. But puking wont help you."
Y/nn stood up from her seat, walked over to Sasuke, and slapped him in the back of the head. "Learn some manners Sasuke Uchiha." Naruto burst out laughing and she walked to him, doing the same. "Don't think I didn't mean you too, Naruto Uzumaki."
Sakura wandered around the kitchen, looking at pictures. "Excuse me?" She turned around. "This picture is torn, is there some reason for that?"
We all turned to look at what she was talking about. There was a lone picture hanging on the wall behind us. The picture showed Tazuna, Tsunami Inari, and another person had been ripped out of it. Tsunami spoke up before anyone could say anything else. "It's my husband."
Tazuna's whole attitude changed. "They used to call him a hero in this land."
Inari stood up from the table and started to walk out, clearly worrying Tsunami. "Inari, where are you going?" Instead of answering Inari shut the front door behind him. Tsunami started for the door. "Father, you can't talk about him like that in front of Inari! You know that!" I had not seen Tsunami like this since we had shown up here. She slammed the door behind her.
"How come Inari is so..." Sakura paused. "What happened to him?"
I piped in. "Is there a story to this?"
Tazuna began. "He wasn't his real father, he came into our lives later. He brought so much happiness, he and Inari were so close. In those days, Inari used to laugh all the time. But then..." Tazuna was having a hard time getting his words out and we began to see tears hitting the table. "All that ended. He never laughs or smiles anymore. Ever since the day everything changed."
"The word courage was stolen from this island. We were left feeling powerless, hopeless, and Inari suffered the most. Ever since that day, ever since it happened."
"Tell us..." I was generally curious now. "What happened to Inari?"
"First, you need to know about the man, his father. The man who taught us the word courage, who was a hero in this land." Tazuna took off his glasses and wiped the tears from his eyes. "He came here about three years ago. Inari's dog, Pooch, was thrown into the lake by some bullies. Inari was not able to swim and when they told him they weren't going to save the dog Inari stood at the edge of the bridge, contemplating what to do. Suddenly, one of them pushed Inari into the water and at that exact moment Pooch figured out how to dog paddle. Pooch had run to find help and the boys on the bridge chased after him, trying to stop him."
"When the boys ran off a man pulled Inari out of the water, cared for him, and fed him. His name was Kaiza. He was a simple fisherman who had come here from another land to follow his dreams. After that Inari and Kaiza were inseparable. The boy never met his real father so you could imagine what it meant to him to have Kaiza in his life. He looked up to him, followed in his footsteps, like a real father and son. Kaiza spent more and more time with us until, naturally, he just became a part of our family. And then when this town needed him he became something more."
"One night, when the flood gates had opened and our lower district was about to be flooded, the townspeople came to Kaiza to ask for help. Kaiza jumped into action. Someone had to jump into the water and tie a rope to the gate so the townspeople could pull it shut. Naturally, when no one wanted to step up, Kaiza did. Kaiza made it to the gate and tied the rope to the gate so the townspeople could begin to pull it shut. From that time on Kaiza was considered a hero to this village. He taught us all the meaning of courage and Inari was so proud to be his son, but it wasn't long after that Gato showed up and took over. He terrorized the whole village. Only Kaiza stood up to him. Gato couldn't have a local hero getting in his way. It took his whole gang to stop one man."
" Gato strung Kaiza up on a pole in front of the whole town, including Inari. Gato told everyone that he had defied the Gato Corporation and sentenced him to execution for his punishment. He wanted him to be an example so nobody stood in his way again. Inari watched as they executed Kaiza. Inari was crushed that Kaiza was not there to protect us anymore. Since then Inari has changed, so has Tsunami and all of our people. We lost our will."
When I looked over at Y/n she had tears rolling down her cheeks. She had always been a sucker for stories like this. Naruto stood up from the table to walk away and instantly fell to his face. "You need to relax and take some time off Naruto. You've used up too much chakra. If you push any harder it could kill you."
Naruto was focused. "I'm gonna prove it."
We all looked at him confused. Sakura was annoyed with him again. "Prove what?"
"I'll prove that it's true." Naruto slowly stood back up. "That in this world, there are real heroes."
Naruto ran off and we all knew exactly where he was going... back to the tree.
We sat around the table for tea that next morning. Naruto still hadn't returned from his training last night. I wouldn't let anyone see it or know, but I was starting to worry about him. Tazuna said something about it first. "Naruto didn't come back again last night?"
Sakura was worried too, but didn't want to sound it. "He's gone completely nuts, he's out there climbing trees in the dark. He could be dead right now, you know, from using up too much of his chakra."
Tsunami was disappointed in Y/n and I, you could tell by her voice. "Well I certainly hope he's alright, a kid out in the woods alone all night."
I spoke up, defending Y/n and myself. "There's nothing to worry about. Naruto's a goofy kid, but he's a full fledged ninja. He can handle himself."
I never thought I would hear Sasuke say the next words, even Y/n was in shock. "Sakura's right, Naruto's such a loser he's probably laying out there dead somewhere." Sasuke stood up from the table and walked toward the door.
Sakura watched him. "Sasuke?"
"I'm going for a walk."
"But we just started eating." Sakura looked down to see Sasuke's empty plate and stopped talking.
I looked over at Y/n who seemed worried. I nodded toward the door. "Go."
Y/n stood up and started walking. "Sasuke, wait." And with that she shut the door behind her.
As an hour went by I began to get nervous. None of them had returned so I grabbed Sakura and we took off for the woods. I found Y/n and Sasuke with Naruto in the clearing we had used the trees from. Sakura and I just barely dodged a kunai that landed in front of us and when we looked up we saw Naruto laying on a branch at the top of his tree.
Sakura was amazed. "Woah, Naruto can climb that high using his chakra?"
Naruto was proud of himself. "What do you think? Is this high enough for you guys? I mean, it's a long way down. Huh?"
Suddenly we saw Naruto start to slip as he stood up. My eyes grew wide and I looked over at Y/n. "Uh-oh" He began to scream, which caused Sakura to scream, and Y/nn began jumping through the trees, ready to dash across and grab him, landing on another branch.
Before Y/n could do her final jump and grab him Naruto balanced himself with his chakra and he looked at all of us with a smile. "Just kidding, you guys really fell for it." He began to laugh.
Sakura yelled at him. "We were worried about you Naruto."
I had a weird feeling. "Why do I think this is going to end badly?"
Naruto's feet finally came loose from the tree and this time he was really falling. Sakura was even angrier now. My eyes have never grown so wide in my life and she hollered. "You just had to push it, didn't you show off."
I hollered to get Y/n's attention, who was currently watching Sasuke. "Y/n, help Naruto!"
Naruto began to scream and both the Uchiha sibling went into action. Sasuke scaled the tree and just as Y/n got down to Naruto's level Sasuke climbed under a branch and grabbed onto Naruto's ankle, hanging there with him. Sasuke smirked at him. "You really are a loser Naruto.
Sakura yelled from the ground and I saw Y/n smiling at her brother. "Alright Sasuke, you're the best."
Y/n jumped down and landed next to me. I looked over at her and smiled. "If we're still sane by the time we're done their training, it'll be a miracle."
"You've got that right." She laughed.
I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and pulled her to me, kissing the side of her head and laughing with her.
All but Sasuke and Naruto were sitting at the table, ready for dinner. Sakura was clearly worried about them, Y/n and I not so much, "Now they're both late. I wouldn't have expected that from Sasuke."
Y/n was annoyed. "Me either."
Sasuke and Naruto came through the door a second later. Sasuke had Naruto's arm wrapped around his shoulder. Tazuna taunted them a little. "What have you been up to? You look like something that cat dragged in."
Naruto looked up. "We both made it. We climbed all the way to the top."
I looked over and smiled. "Good, now we move on, starting tomorrow you're both body guards for Tazuna."
They both smiled. Naruto threw his arm up and yelled. "Alright!" When his arm went up they lost their balance and both fell onto the ground.
Sasuke was clearly angry now. "You're such a loser!" We all chuckled and settled in for dinner.
Tazuna looked around the table. "In a few more days the bridge will be finished and I'll have you to thank for that."
Tsunami was very motherly to everyone. "You've all done great, but you've still got to be careful."
"I've been meaning to ask you this, but I haven't had the chance until now. Why did you stay and protect me, even after you found out I lied to bring you here?"
I looked at him and put my hands together. "Those who stray from the path of justice have no courage, but under the wing of a strong leader, cowardice can not survive."
Tsunami looked confused. "Huh?"
"That was a quote from the first Hokage."
Naruto was asleep at the table, Inari was watching him. Tears started to fall from Inari and we all looked over at him. "But why"
Naruto woke up when he spoke and looked at him. "What'd you say?"
Inari slammed his hands on the table. "All this stupid training it just a waste of time. Gato's got a whole army. They'll beat you down and they'll destroy you. These cool things you all say, they don't mean anything. No matter what you do, the strong always win and and weak always lose."
Naruto laid his head back down. "Just speak for yourself. It won't be like that for me, you got that?"
"Why don't you just be quiet!? Looking at you makes me sick. You don't know anything about this country, you're just butting in. Always laughing and playing around, you don't know what it's like to suffer and be treated like dirt!"
I knew that was going to strike a nerve with Naruto. Naruto slowly lifted his head up. "Listen to yourself, whining and complaining like some sort of little victim." Inari's face turned to shock. "You can whimper all day for all I care. You're nothing but a coward."
Sakura was mad now. "Naruto, you went too far!' Naruto stood up and walked away and her face changed from anger to guilt. "Naruto?"
Inari stood up from the table and went outside. I looked between Tazuna and Tsunami and then to Y/n. Y/n looked upset. "Let's go and talk to Inari." She looked toward Tazuna. "As long as you don't mind anyway."
Tazuna shook his head. "Be my guest."
Y/n and I stood up and walked toward the door. She looked back at Sasuke and Sakura before we left the room. "We'll be right back.
When we reached where Inari was sitting on the deck I slowly approached. "Can we talk to you?"
Inari looked behind him and nodded. I sat on one side of him and Y/n sat on the other. Y/n spoke first. "I'm sorry about Naruto." She smiled at him. Inari just stared.
I tried next. "Naruto can be a little harsh sometimes, but he doesn't hate you."
"Your grandfather told us what happened… to your father."
I wanted to try to make him realize that him and Naruto weren't much different from each other. "You probably don't know this, but Naruto grew up too, without knowing his father. In fact, he never knew either of his parents, and he never had a single friend in our village." Inari looked up at me. "Still, I've never seen him cry, sulk, or give up. He's always eager to jump in. He wants to be respected. That's his dream."
Y/n took over. "He'll put his life on the line for that in a heartbeat. My guess is, he just got tired of crying and decided to do something about it. Even though he's young and still learning he knows what it means to be strong, like your father did."
Y/n looked over at me. She had tears welling up in her eyes so I started to talk, wanting her to calm down. "I think he knows better than any of us, what you're going through. What Naruto told you earlier, as cruel as it sounded, he's probably told himself that a thousand times."
Y/nn started again. "And not only that, but Sasuke and I, if you didn't already know, we're brother and sister. When Sasuke was 7 years old, his older brother and my younger brother, Itachi, who was only 13 at the time, massacred our family. I had barely trained to be a ninja at the age of 18 and I had barely any skills. Itachi was part of the ANBU Black Ops, so he had special training. I couldn't stop him, I had all I could just to protect Sasuke from him. I watched as Itachi killed my parents and he would have killed me too, if Sasuke hadn't walked into the room, distracting him. Sasuke grew up with no parents and without me. I had gone to hunt my brother down and had lost Sasuke in the process. It's just this last month that I found him, after five years, so Sasuke can sort of relate to you too."
"You can always talk to us, we're more than happy to listen Inari. You'd be surprised what has happened to some ninja." I stood up and helped Y/n up. "We're gonna head to bed, but our door will be open if you need us."
I took Y/n's hand and we walked back toward the door. Y/n turned around once to look behind us, sighing as she turned back around.
When the two of us climbed into bed we fell asleep faster than we ever had.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day One Hundred Ninety-Two: Cooperation ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata, Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura, Hatake Kakashi, Aburame Shino, Inuzuka Kiba, Yūhi Kurenai ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: A Light Amongst Shadows ] [ AO3 Link ]
Genin missions have been so boring lately.
While Sasuke expected there to be some learning curve...he wasn’t assuming it would be this bad. Dog walking, yard weeding, cat fetching...these aren’t shinobi tasks! Nothing about them utilize what they learned in the Academy, or during the training sessions they’ve had thus far with Kakashi. These are things any civilian could do! Why tasks like these are being afforded to shinobi - even if they are genin - is beyond his understanding.
Needless to say, it’s made the little Uchiha irritated. He’s supposed to be gaining experience, learning new jutsu, building up both his knowledge and his strength...and these assignments aren’t cutting it. He’d even dare to call them an insult. He has no time to waste on menial tasks when his brother is out there, still breathing, and far beyond Sasuke’s current skill level. How can he even begin to compete with - let alone kill - his elder brother if all he’s being given to do are stupid chores and pointless exercizes?!
“So, I’ve got a little something different for you three today.”
Meeting as always atop the little bridge that roughly sits in the middle of their homes, the trio of genin look up as Kakashi finally arrives. While Naruto and Sakura take to their usual berating of the man, Sasuke just leans coolly against the railing. There’s no point to it by now...their teacher will never be on time, no matter their fussing.
“So, what’s the mission? Huh? Huh?” Naruto demands, practically dancing around with anticipation. “C’mon, you gotta tell us!”
“Well, it’s another D-rank,” Kakashi begins, pausing as his team all wilt. “...is that a problem?”
“Man, these missions are lame,” the Uzumaki mutters.
“We all have to go through them,” Kakashi assures him, giving his infamous one-eyed smile. “You’ll outgrow them soon enough...but first, you need an introduction to missions and the system before we start sending you on something more...advanced.”
“You’ve been saying that for months,” Sasuke retorts, arms loosely folded over his chest.
“And you’re still not ready, even after all that time.”
Dark eyes narrow, but Sasuke withholds any other quips. It’s just a waste of time.
“Now...barring any more interruptions...we’ve got a two-squadron mission on our hands.”
The genin blink. “...wait, what?” Naruto demands. “Y’mean we gotta team up with more genin?”
“Precisely,” Kakashi chirps. “Today you’ll be working with team eight.” After a pause, he clarifies, “Aburame Shino, Inuzuka Kiba, and Hyūga Hinata. Currently under the tutelage of one Yūhi Kurenai. They’ve been denoted as a bit of a tracker team, what with the kikaichu, ninken, and Byakugan at their disposal. And you three are to be more of the...beef in this little mix.”
“...meaning?” Sasuke asks.
“You and Naruto are pretty heavy hitters, and Sakura is clever. Working with team eight’s abilities to find your target, you’ll then head in to capture it.”
“If it’s another cat, I’m gonna holler!” Naruto...hollers.
“No, not a cat this time,” Kakashi assures him with another smile. “This is a bit more...feisty.”
All three genin furrow brows at that. “...what’s feistier than a cat?” Sakura muses mostly to herself.
“You’ll just have to come find out! We’re to meet your temporary teammates at the gate.”
Exchanging glances, team seven makes to follow as Kakashi about-faces and heads to the main village entrance.
True to his word, Kurenai’s team is already there. “Kakashi,” she greets, hands on her hips.
“Ready to go?”
“Are you going to explain what we’re looking for?” Sakura cuts in, folding her arms with a hint of impatience.
“Yes yes,” Kakashi replies. “You see, we recently had a new batch of messenger hawks start training yesterday! But unfortunately...they weren’t quite tame enough, and flew off. It’s up to you six to locate the missing hawks, and safely return them to the village aviary.”
“...we’re after birds?” Naruto clarifies, squinting.
“Important birds. Konoha’s message system has to be foolproof,” Kurenai offers. “Important, encoded information is often sent by hawk. If we don’t have enough of them, or those we have aren’t trained properly, we could lose intel to our enemies.”
The implication perks the younger group.
“So, you’ll be working in pairs,” Kakashi goes on. “One member of each team: team eight will do the tracking, and team seven will work on retrieval.”
“How are we supposed to catch them? Especially without harming them?” Sakura inquires with a frown.
“With these,” Kurenai offers, holding up a bag, within which are several weighted nets. “We’ve also got some bait to try to lure them in, but we have to find them first.”
“That won’t be a problem!” Kiba insists, dashing a thumb at his nose with a grin. “Team eight’s the best trackers from our class!”
“We will do our best,” is Shino’s contribution, Hinata nodding.
“All right...Sakura, you’ll be with Kiba. Naruto, you’re with Shino. And Sasuke, you’ll team up with Hinata. Ready?”
Arming themselves with nets and bait, the pairs scatter.
Sasuke and Hinata head north along the wall, Hinata quickly activating her Byakugan and scanning their surroundings.
He gives her a glance. They very rarely speak, so...in all honesty, he really doesn’t know her that well. Sasuke kept to himself and his studies in the Academy, and she was such a wallflower he often forgot she existed. But her being a Hyūga is interesting, given their supposed shared roots. “...see anything?”
“Not, um...not yet,” she reports, still gazing ahead.
“...how are we supposed to tell them from wild hawks?”
“Kurenai-sensei said they have little metal bands around their left legs. The aviary reported five missing birds last night.”
“And you can see those bands?”
A nod. “Yes. At least...so long as it’s within my range. Right now, I can see about f-fifty meters in any direction.”
Dark brows lift a hair. “...and the Byakugan...it can see through things, right?”
“Yes, most things. Some jutsu can - can warp or distort it. But I haven’t...encountered any of those yet.”
Huh...color him impressed.
They wander for about twenty minutes before Hinata holds out a hand, squinting. “...there. T-twenty meters, ten o’clock.”
He can’t see it, but...Sasuke trusts her. “All right...I’ll set some bait, see if we can lure it out.” A potent dead rat is laid among some leaf litter on the forest floor, Sasuke hiding up in a tree. Hinata takes a nearby branch, watching.
“...here it comes!” she whispers.
With a flutter, the hawk lands nearby, tempted by the smell. Waddling a few paces with outstretched wings, it makes to inspect the carcass.
Timing a leap, Sasuke closes much of the distance as he can before the bird reacts, tossing the net the rest of the way. With weighted edges quickly dragging it down, it gives a fierce cry, fighting against the fibers with sharp talons.
Both genin stand nearby. “Should...should we try to pick it up…?” Hinata asks, stance a bit wary. “I’m not sure that would be, um...that would be safe.”
“I think I can get it.” Approaching carefully, Sasuke ignores the bird’s struggling, managing to get a careful grip on its legs, cradling the rest in his arms. “There…”
“Wow, good job!”
There’s a small warmth at the praise, but Sasuke keeps his expression neutral. “Well...guess we better take it back to free up the net.”
Kakashi and Kurenai look up as they make their way back. “Well well, good job you two!” Kurenai praises.
“Has anyone else found a hawk yet?”
“Not yet,” Kakashi confirms.
“What should we do with this one…?”
Answering with action, Kakashi accepts the upset avian, putting a blinding cap over its eyes and a tether around its legs. It quickly calms, occasionally fluttering and giving a soft rasp.
“Well, back to it!” he then chirps.
They manage to find one more, Kiba and Sakura bringing in three. Naruto and Shino...find none.
“Man, that was totally lame!” Naruto complains, arms folded as the two sensei handle the birds while they trek to the aviary. “How were we supposed to do this?”
Shino adjusts his glasses. “I tracked them just fine...but you were too loud and scared them off…”
“Sounds like Naruto all right,” Sakura agrees with a sigh.
The aviary team gratefully accepts the returned messengers, assuring the teams they’ll be paid well.
“So, that was a pretty good exercise in cooperation between squads,” Kakashi then observes, hands in his pockets. “I think you guys make a pretty good combined team!”
Sakura and Kiba beam, while Shino and Naruto give cool side eye looks. Glancing to Hinata, Sasuke manages a hint of a smile, which she returns.
“Well, that’s all for today. You all head home, and we’ll turn in the reports,” Kurenai offers. “We’ll be sure to get you your pay shares tomorrow morning.”
With that, the group disperses, Sasuke deciding to get a few hours of training in before making his way home.
“Um…”
Catching Hinata’s voice, he pauses as the rest leave them behind. Posture shy as always, Hinata ducks her head. “It...it was nice working with you today, Sasuke-kun.”
Eyebrows lift just a hair. “...yeah. You too. Maybe we’ll get to do that again sometime. Nice change of pace from yard work…”
To his surprise, she giggles into a hand. “You guys do that sort of thing too?”
“Ugh, yeah...all the time.”
“Have you, um...have you had to catch Tora?”
“So many times, I’ve lost count.”
“Yeah, us too! I hope we get more missions like this one...o-or at least, you know...something different. It can get a little...f-frustrating. But I guess genin get stuck with all the b-boring jobs no one else wants, huh?”
“Seems that way.”
...silence blooms.
“Well, um...I guess I’ll see you around?”
“Yeah, probably. Later, Hyūga.”
Hinata gives a short, bobbing bow as the pair part ways. Hands in his pockets, Sasuke mulls the mission over. It was a nice change of pace. Hopefully Kakashi finds more like it. And while he didn’t get to see how Shino or Kiba worked, Hinata did really well. He’ll admit...he’s a bit curious about the Byakugan now. Maybe they can spar sometime so he can learn more about how it works...seeing through objects would be exceedingly handy.
But, for now...time to do a little training on his own, then head home for the day.

Tiiired...and headache...blegh lol Anywayyy, just some random genin shenanigans. Been having a lot of muse for this era in RP, so...I thought it'd work well for a drabble entry! I really wish these teams interacted more in canon...but, I guess that's what fics like this are for! But yeah, I'm gonna go crawl into bed! Thanks for reading n_n

Building Our Own
Kakashi was pretty sure he didn’t like Madara. Pretty sure. There were times when it was really difficult to stay inside his shell and hate the world because watching Madara – barely taller than himself yet filled with enough attitude for the whole village – face off against the taller, brighter, unsuspecting Minato-sensei was always the highlight of his week. Knowing the two of them had so much in common did not mean Kakashi wanted to make friends with the other boy. He didn’t need friends to become the greatest ninja this world had ever seen and restore his family’s honor.
Anyway that Gai idiot followed him around too much already. His non-existent friend quota had been filled, thank you very much.
It was still kind of hard to ignore Madara. The boy refused to not be seen but he wasn’t obnoxious about it. There was just something magnetic about his competence even at such a young age, the confidence in every move he made, even the spiky stupid mess of his hair. Most of the Uchiha that Kakashi met had beautiful smooth hair but Madara seemed to have skipped that gene; his hair stuck straight out from his head in stiff spikes reminiscent of Kakashi’s own locks. Yet another thing they had in common and could have commiserated about together – if he had time for stupid things like friendship. Which he did not.
Much to their sensei’s despair, Madara didn’t seem all that upset that one of his teammates refused to bond with him. The majority of his concentration went to edging a few words about his precious baby brother in to every single conversation ever. None of them had ever met Izuna but after less than a month of being a team they all could have probably picked him out of a crowd and recited at least ten different points of trivia about him off the tops of their heads.
And that right there was the one thing that truly set them apart, the one bit that stopped Kakashi from allowing himself to at least like the boy, even if only from afar. Where Kakashi had lost everyone he ever loved Madara still had someone, even if it was just a useless little brother. He still had someone to care about, someone precious, and besides that he had a clan that treated him like absolute royalty. Apparently Madara was a direct descendant of the great Uchiha Obito, founder of their village and betrayer of the Shodaime Hokage. Kakashi didn’t really see why he got to be venerated for being related to a traitor when others were shunned for the same thing but the one time he had tried to question it Minato-sensei had hushed him and Kakashi felt his heart grow a little bit smaller.
So Kakashi stayed small and quiet and spent the hours he wasn’t training with his team training in private instead. He would grow bigger, stronger, and someday he would be the one to show Madara his back. He would be the one that others watched from afar.
He would restore the honor his father had lost. Only then would his life be worth something.
-
“Your father’s honor is not your own.”
Madara’s words left him reeling, adrift and unsteady where he had always felt solid logic underneath his feet. Kakashi waited for the world to stop spinning before baring his teeth behind the mask that hid them.
“What would you know about it?” he snarled. Madara scoffed.
“I’m descended from the biggest traitor this village has ever seen but does my clan care about that? No. They care that I inherited his strength. Haven’t you ever heard the phrase ‘innocent until proven guilty’ before?”
“At least you have a clan! Don’t talk like you know me!”
“Of course I know you, dumb ass.” Everything Madara said was always said with confidence, as though it was an absolute immutable truth. It made refuting him very difficult sometimes because the way he spoke made Kakashi want to believe.
He resisted because clearly no one else should have a say in his situation not when they weren’t the ones living it.
“I will restore my father’s honor!” he began. He got no farther in to his rant before Madara rolled his eyes and interrupted.
“There’s nothing to restore, he’s dead. We build our own honor. And you have plenty of that even if you’re an asshole. Take the stick out of your ass and wake up. You’re Kakashi, not Sakumo. You can’t fix his mistake any more than I can. He didn’t even make one!”
“He – what?”
Kakashi sat, stunned, and listened to the entire fifteen minutes of Madara’s rant about how true dishonor was in abandoning your comrades and how the entire concept of their village itself had been founded on the desire to protect one’s comrades. Apparently the history books left out quite a bit of information about Uchiha Obito’s life before he abandoned Konoha; Kakashi never knew it was him that had named their fledgling settlement or him that had come up with the idea in the first place as a way to protect his own precious ones.
All through the boy’s impassioned speech he remained silent, soaking in every word like a message from on high, and when Madara finally stopped to pant angrily, kicking at a nearby tree stump, he cleared his throat with more awkwardness than should have fit in to his twelve year old body.
“We should find Rin,” he murmured. It was the best he could do for an apology. Madara narrowed his eyes, probably trying to determine whether or not he meant that, then nodded decisively.
“Good to see you got your head out of your ass. Damn right we go find her. No more of this ‘the mission is more important’ bullshit, alright?”
“Yeah…”
“So what are we waiting for? Aren’t you supposed to be mission leader? Lead on, jōnin-taichou!”
Amazed that his teammate still trusted him to do so when he had only just a few minutes ago suggested abandoning Rin to her fate, Kakashi nodded and closed his eyes to think. “My summons will be able to follow her trail more easily than we can.”
Kannabi Bridge went on to become the mission famous as a long-awaited turning point in the war, the incident that finally gave them a clear advantage to end things in Konoha’s favor. For the ones who carried it out, however, it was memorable for a different reason. The mission to Kannabi Bridge was the day they finally – finally – became a true unit, the day Madara brushed that chip off of Kakashi’s shoulder and offered the hand of friendship instead.
It also became the day Kakashi would look back on and realize he was completely and utterly screwed.
Of course he would fall in love with his best friend. Of fucking course.
-
ANBU suited him a little bit too well but that was fine. Everything was fine as long as he had Madara there with him, eagle mask covering his face and endless black hair spilling around it like a cloud of death. He wondered why they bothered with the masks sometimes. Both of them were entirely too identifiable by their hair alone so really all the masks did was add a bit of extra dramatic flair.
Shaking his head, Kakashi forced his attention back to the task at hand, pushing just a little more speed out of his tired legs. The two of them had run countless missions together since becoming true comrades, both in the name of Team Minato and as the perfectly matched pair they were now in ANBU, but never had they run a mission this important before. It was only the second time Rin had been captured and already it was starting to feel like a pattern. He wondered which idiot had been the one to decide this time that she was the weak link in their band of comrades. Rin was many things but she was not weak.
As evidenced by the carnage that came in to view when they finally found her. More than half of the bodies that lay dead around her were decorated with perfectly normal wounds, their flesh opened by blades and the extra clean sort of cut that could only come from her weaponized medical jutsu. The rest had been mauled as though by a hungry beast – and a beast she looked, right then.
Her pretty brown eyes glowing red and her entire body bubbling with a sickly green cloak of pure poisonous chakra, it was hard to tell whether or not she recognized them at first. A low growl rumbled across the space between them and the two young men shared a look before hastily removing their masks.
“It’s fine now,” Madara attempted a soothing voice. “They’re dead.”
“Don’t,” she warning when he tried to take a step towards her.
“It’s just me, it’s just Madara.”
“Shut up! I know who you are, dummy!” The growl in her words cracked and hiked to a whine that Kakashi recognized all too well. He’d raised eight dogs on his own; he knew what a wounded animal sounded like. “I can’t go back with you. Not like this.”
Unfortunately neither of them had been born with an ounce of tact. Kakashi snorted. “Can and will. Haven’t you heard the rumors, Rin-chan? We’ve had a beast living with us the whole time and I’ve never seen Kushina-nee bite anyone’s head off yet. Well, not literally. She’s scary but she’s not out for blood no matter what the monster trapped inside her wants. She can help you.”
It was a terrible thing to see in a friend, that broken light of hope too small to be believed in. Kakashi inched forward, saddened when she flinched away but determined to reach her, and when her bubbling chakra burned his skin he refused to show any sign of pain.
“Come home. If we can survive Madara for this long then we can survive you. He’s more of an animal than anyone.”
His friend’s offended screech broke the tension and Rin’s startled laugh was a balm on all their souls, just enough of a positive emotion to push the beast in her belly down. The effort left her exhausted but Kakashi caught her and Madara took point to protect them both as they turned for home, wearing a pout still but it was a very cute pout so Kakashi only teased him a little bit. It was good to be together.
-
“That’s a big fox.”
“Your observations are as astute as ever,” Madara’s voice drawled from behind his shoulder.
“We have to fight that big fox? He’s just a big scary dog. I don’t wanna hit a dog, Dara-chan!”
“Stop calling me that!”
Kakashi smiled briefly to see Madara stomp one foot. Fifteen years old and he still hadn’t grown out of the habit. Then he turned his eyes back to the carnage in front of them when Rin touched down at his other side.
“Isobu says that Kurama isn’t acting like himself,” she reported. “Something must be controlling him.”
“Right. Let’s found out who, shall we?” Kakashi narrowed his eyes, all traces of amusement gone from their little trio of death as they all pushed off the Hokage monument they had been perched on to make their assessment. Team Minato, as they still sometimes thought of themselves, were not the first line of defense in any fight. They were the ones who ended the fight.
When they found the man controlling the Kyuubi he was much older than they might have guessed – ancient, in fact. The fact that he could still move the way he did seemed to be due to the fact that one entire half of his body had been reconstructed with an unidentified white substance that reformed and reattached itself when injured, healing faster than they could hurt him. And that wasn’t even the part that made the fight difficult. No, that was the fully formed Sharingan in his one good eye, an abomination that enraged Madara.
It took all three of them to bring him down, one unit moving perfectly in sync. It took Isobu and Susano’o and eight dog summons. It took everything they had but in the end Uchiha Obito lay ancient and exposed at their feet, screaming his impotent rage and crying out revenge against a man who had never truly wronged him.
“Senju Hashirama is dead,” Kakashi muttered in exhaustion, kicking away a severed limb still trying to crawl back to its host. “You should be too. Hold still and let me fix that.”
“He abandoned me! He will pay! The world will pay! I will have what I am owed! The perfect world, don’t you see? We could all live in the perfect world!”
“Something tells me your perfect world would not be like mine.” With his blade raised Kakashi shook his head in pity. “The world owes you nothing. Those who go back on their word like he did are trash, that’s true. But those who abandon their comrades? People like you who break bonds, you’re nothing but scum. Goodnight, Uchiha Obito, I hope you find rest.”
“Poetic,” Madara noted, watching as Kakashi impassively drew a blade through their defeated enemy’s throat.
“Maa, I didn’t mean to be.”
Rin groaned and sat down on the bloody grass. Then she fell over backwards with a sigh of relief. “Well that wasn’t what I wanted to do with my Tuesday,” she said.
“Any chance one of you can sense how Minato-sensei is doing with the Kyuubi? I’m fresh out of chakra.” Very gently, slowly so as not to jostle his sore body, Kakashi lowered himself down to join Rin. Madara snorted at them both.
“Your reserves are pathetic,” he pointed out. “The Kyuubi’s chakra has been split but I can still feel Kushina-nee. It would seem sensei was able to seal the beast in to two places at once. Very interesting.”
Both of the two on the ground made soft noises of curious agreement but investigating would have to wait. Just knowing their precious ones were alive was enough for now. Everything else could be left until after they had recovered the feeling in all of their limbs, possibly until after they had slept for a week. They had gone head to head with a legend today, after all. That definitely deserved a nap.
Madara wandered over to perch next to Kakashi, brushing something out of his hair without seeming to realize he was doing so. As much as he didn’t seem to want to admit it he was just as tired as the other two. Kakashi held his breath and allowed gloved fingers to trace the shape of his jaw.
“You took a lot of stupid chances today,” his friend murmured. Kakashi nodded.
“So did you.”
“Hn. Dumb ass.” His piece spoken, Madara’s eyes rolled back in his head and his body gave in to the exhaustion he’d been trying not to show. Unfortunately when he passed out he flopped down across the other two, who both grunted in surprise and then wriggled in dismay to find themselves trapped, lacking the energy to roll the idiot off of them.
Rin was the first to give up, flopping back down to the grass with a sigh. “You know for a second there I thought he was going to lean down and kiss you.”
Then she laughed as best she could at the redness of Kakashi’s face and the disconnected syllables gurgling out from behind his mask.
-
Twenty years old was a terrible age all of his friends were at least one year older. Twenty years old meant that all of his friends could drink while they oversaw the chūnin exams here in Suna but all he could do was sip soda and watch. What was the point of such a high drinking age anyway? And who had ever heard of a shinobi being denied a drink? He’s been getting served back home since he reached jōnin at the age of twelve.
Actually that probably wasn’t a high point and Minato-sensei should probably make sure that practice wasn’t still being followed. But his point still stood!
Kakashi felt cheated when his decision to go out with his friends in the hopes of watching them all make fools of themselves ended with sitting in the corner of a dusty Suna club watching over the ladies’ purses while Madara snoozed next to him. He’d really been hoping Madara would get drunk and do something stupid. Or maybe that he would get absolutely blackout drunk and do something completely out of the blue like, say, decide to make out with the comrade who’d been silently in love with him for almost a decade now.
Life was so unfair.
Jerking his elbow in to the other man’s side at least got him the amusing reaction of bleary eyes jerking open and an angry expression. He muttered something too but it was impossible to hear of the thumping music so Kakashi shrugged and shook his head, completely unrepentant. Madara scowled deeper and leaned over to put his lips right next to Kakashi’s ear.
“I said, you’re a dick. I was trying to sleep until we can get the hell out of here.”
Kakashi pushed away the urge to shiver and shouted over the music. “So let’s get out of here.”
Rin and Anko both tried to wheedle them in to staying when Kakashi wound his way through the dance floor to give them back their purses but he skipped free of their reaching hands and hustled back to Madara’s side. Stumbling outside was heaven on his ears, stepping passed the barrier of excessive noise and in to the blessed silence of the desert at night. Both of them groaned with relief and rubbed at their aching heads as they hurried away, ignoring the judging eyes of the club’s bouncers, eager to get back to their hotel rooms and just relax. Neither of them were really the sort to enjoy this stuff anyway. A nice homey bar would have been more their style but it had been Rin who invited them out so it had been her choice of venue.
Madara’s steps were surprisingly steady for someone who had pounded back enough alcohol to fall asleep in that blaring chaos. He wove side to side a bit whenever something interesting caught his eye but for the most part he didn’t seem too dizzy and Kakashi felt cheated all over again that he wasn’t needed to heroically offer his shoulder as support.
“Where are we?” The sudden question made him furrow his brows.
“Uh…Suna?”
“No! I mean I don’t recognize this street.”
Stopping to look around, Kakashi bit his lip. “Huh. You’re right. I think we’re lost.”
“That’s fine. As long as I’m lost with you.” Madara shrugged and continued on while Kakashi’s feet stumbled to a halt, one hand pressed against his chest to sooth his suddenly racing heart.
He glared as best he could and hoped the darkness covered the blush on his face.
“You can’t just…say stuff like that.”
“Oh. Shit. You’re right.” Confusingly, Madara looked embarrassed as well to realize what he’d said, clapping a hand over his mouth and sending a guilty look out the corner of his eyes.
“Wait. I know I’m right but why do you think I’m right?” Kakashi asked.
“Cause I don’t want you to know that I like you!”
“Maa, of course you like me, we’re best friends…”
Now frustrated that he wasn’t being understood, Madara stomped his foot and turned to shake a finger under Kakashi’s nose. “No! I mean like like you! Love like you! Don’t misunderstand me! I swear sometimes you do it on purpose because you know it annoys me and–”
His friend continued to rant but most of it washed over Kakashi, who had of course heard this lecture a hundred times and more. Well, except for the part where Madara was apparently in love with him, that bit was new. And mind-blowing. Life-changing, really. It took a while to sink in that Madara didn’t seem to realize what he had just confessed, either because he was too drunk or because nothing else ever mattered when he’d found something to be irritated by.
Why Kakashi found that cute was a mystery.
He did finally shut up when Kakashi kissed him, though. Actually, to be fair, he did make a few aborted attempts at speaking before finally giving in and kissing back, one hand fisting in the front of Kakashi’s vest to keep him in place. When they slowly pulled apart he licked his lips and fell immediately back in to a scowl.
“The mask, you idiot,” was all he said. Kakashi scrambled to pull it down out of the way.
“You want–?”
Madara’s answer was another kiss. And it turned out he was right, it was definitely better with the mask out of the way.
Someday, when he had eventually recovered his scrambled wits and picked himself up from the puddle of goo he could feel his body melting in to, he would need to say thank you. Not for the kiss, although the kiss was good enough on its own to warrant starting a diary just to describe it and Kakashi very much hoped they could do this again. Preferably every day from now on. But eventually he would need to impress upon Madara how grateful he was to have the other man in his life, how important it was that Madara had never abandoned him even when he was a young child with a terrible weight on his shoulders that he should never have been carrying in the first place.
Eventually he would need to say that he owed everything he was as a person to Madara.
But not now. Right now he pressed forward slowly to bury his fingers in long thick hair and cling to the one person he had been striving for since long before he had ever acknowledged it.
My honor is my own, he thought as they stumbled against the front of a nearby shop, his thoughts going back to a moment between them half a lifetime ago. And I owe my honor to you, who showed me how to believe in it. How to believe in us.
