58. What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most? (Brainstorming, outlining, writing, editing, etc)Â
60. Have you had a writer you admire comment on your fic? What was that like?
62. Thoughts on cliffhangers?
65. Tell us about what youâre most looking forward to writing â in your current project, or a future project
67. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas?
68. What, if anything, do you do for inspiration?
70. When asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?
71. When it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?
72. What order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
73. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?
Okay so Iâm not even gonna number these cuz this is a lot đ.
My creative process is like an on and off switch. Due to ADHD Iâll have an idea for a long time decide to map the story out then procrastinateâŠfor a very long time
TBH I get inspired by other peopleâs fanart and fanfics.
Now pls don't copy your Auntie Caspian over here but I really just do what ever POV I want to do and feel in the moment if I want to change it I just go back and write it all over again if it's not too late.
If I do receive feed back I feel great! I really enjoy seeing comments and stuff and when I don't I feel fine but kinda overlooked if I'm being honest.
Prep the storyline and lore before anything. If you have all that sorted out you'll be given the liberty to choose what you want in the story or not.
When I have block I just make fanart or make the chapters in my head until I make myself so excited that I want to write again.
Really depends right now I'm doing a DK Fam AU/what if series but IDK what to call it except that (if ya'll have any suggestions pls DM me)
I only have one fic on AO3 so it would be tangled and tts characters lol
One thing that I have noticed( other than always finding a way to add Hispanic/Filipino culture in my fics) is that I tend to be very descriptive about surroundings and how the character feels.
Um I'm fairly new so idk about a lot of genres but all I know right now is that I will never make a story where the main character or any characters that have made it to the end to have a bad ending,if that makes sense. Like I want them to be happy after all the trauma I put them through.
Best advice: to plan things out and to have a draft
Worst advice: that I can't wing it. I do think planning is important but sometimes the best ideas come last minute.
Favorite part of writing: that I can put myself in the characters and what they go through and that I can use it as therapy for myself.
Least favorite: actually writing XD jk but kind of not lol. I also don't like how long editing can be but it's more fun when you can do it with a friend/beta reader yk?
It's long I can tell you that. If I don't have block editing is probably whats taking the longest.
I start with the characters and as I find out who the characters are then I make the plot as I see fit for them and how it can make them stronger and better.
YES ABSOLUTELY!!! I hav this OG story I'm working on and I really want it to be published some day and hopefully that day will be reality!
That I have improved and that I have put a few chapters out.
Depends on what they ask for.
Okay so a small thing I'm doing for my 'What if series' for tts is that I'm making Andrew a good guy and prince of Saporia. and I am also doing a lot of lore for that and giving him an angsty back story.
I'd like to see some Cass and Andrew fanart or some art of the DK cousins which would be Eugene,Cass,Varian and my two OCs Elana and Caspian.
Yah I would re-read fics I haven't because I have a lot to read but I would.
Angsty and wholesome. I wanna try to add a smidge of dark romance but I'm not that good at it so I might practice on that before I publish anything lol.
It's not too long but it can be painful. (if yk yk)
I like them to be honest but not mean when it comes to constructive criticism. and if you have any ideas for the plot or story I honestly would like to hear them out!
YES!!!! I like to respond and see what y'all think. I haven't gotten many but I do like to respond.
How I put a piece of myself in my characters.
It goes back and forth between my OCs and Cass from tts.
How detailed I can be.
I wait until I finish the chapter then I edit.
The lore planning.
She haven't commented ( at least i don't think she has) on a fic but they've helped me brain storm. And it felt nice and cool that I can call her a friend.
If I'm making a second book then yah I like cliffhangers,BUT THEY ARE SO PAINFUL AT THE SAME ASS TIME!!!!
Cass and Andrew scenes,Saporian lore, and Andrew's background. And ofc Erin and Hector moments.
I don't mind prompts.
Look at other people's work.
I'm very enthusiastic, and most of the time others say they can tell lol.
Honestly I don't think I've come across this problem the only thing I have trouble is finding the right words to put the scenes is play.
I write the scenes I'm excited for on paper and then write start to finish on my lap top.
What I think makes me stand out are the characters I create. All of them have either a part of me or have gone through the things I have or are modeled after people in my life.

Pokéchronology, Volume II
-~+*â Crystal â*+~-
Day 1
A new game, a new adventure. Welcome back to Pokéchronology.
If you aren't familiar, Pokéchronology is a series in which I, a first-time Pokémon player, am playing through every mainline Pokémon release in chronological order. Whenever I get in some play time, I end the day with a post detailing my experiences.
This time I'm playing Pokémon Crystal, since I beat Yellow in the last volume. *I'll be doing something a little different for this one, in the hopes of making it a little more interesting to read.
Without further ado, let's get started. Of course, spoilers for Pokémon Crystal and other Generation II games/remakes past this point.
--------------------------------------------------
My name is Reuka. I've lived in New Bark Town for as long as I can remember. It's a nice town, I guess, but it's also really boring. I've been wanting to get out and see the world for a while now.
Problem is, I'm stuck here because I don't have a Pokémon. Wild Pokémon are everywhere in Johto, so I wouldn't be able to get far without one of my own. I've asked Professor Elm, the Pokémon Professor here, if I could have one about a million times, but he always says he's busy and that I should come back later. Ugh. If only I had a Pokémon, I'd leave New Bark without a second thought.
Well, today Professor Elm asked me to run an errand for him. I found out when my mom told me, and my Pokégear had also been fixed up. I wondered if the Professor had finally come to his senses and decided to give me a Pokémon. So I walked over to his lab.
There was some suspicious guy hanging around outside. I asked him what he was doing, being all sneaky like that, but he told me to mind my own business as he chased me off. Yeah, so he's a prick. Way to be inconspicuous, genius! Whatever, I'll just ignore him.
I finally walk into the professor's lab to find out what he wants. Apparently I need to go see "Mr. Pokémon" north of Cherrygrove City. Who calls themselves "Mr. Pokémon?" Anyway, next thing I know, Professor Elm is actually letting me choose a Pokémon to raise and take with me! I can start my journey at last.
Oh, but who to pick though? Professor Elm shows me Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita. They're all pretty cute, but in the end I had to go with Cyndaquil. I love Fire-type Pokémon the most. My new friend needed a nickname, so I called him Pepper.
I guess it's about time I get going. Next stop, Cherrygrove City.
Route 29
There really are a ton of wild Pokémon out here. I'm not sure how many I ran into, but Pepper took care of all of them no problem. Just as long as he's got some berries, he can battle as much as I need him to. And if things get really bad, I can just use a Potion.
I'd like to catch some of the Pokémon I'm finding, but I better keep moving and I don't have any Poké Balls anyway. Pepper is getting a lot stronger already and he learned a new move, so I think I'll be okay for a while. There appears to be another route to the north: number 46. No harm in checking it out, right? Looks like I can't go far though, as I'm immediately blocked off by a ledge.
Pretty soon I'm in Cherrygrove City, where there's a Pokémon Center and a Pokémart. One of the locals gave me a tour of the city and kindly gave me a Map Card for my Pokégear. I get Pepper healed at the center, then I go to the mart to buy some Poké Balls... or I would, if they weren't out of stock. So much for that, I guess. It's just going to be you and me for a bit, Pepper.
Off to see Mr. Pokémon then.
Route 30
I get some more berries for Pepper here, otherwise I'm mostly just battling my way through as I head towards Mr. Pokémon's house.
When I get there, I'm immediately greeted by the man himself, and he gives me... an egg? It's a Pokémon egg, apparently. I wonder what it will hatch into? I also meet Professor Oak at the house, who seems to be another Pokémon Professor. He seemed real impressed by Pepper and I, so much so that he gave me a Pokédex. It seems kind of expensive, and really useful. I guess I'm pretty lucky to have gotten such a generous gift right away.
Well, since I've got this egg, I suppose I'll take it back to Professor Elm and see what he wants to do with it. The moment I leave Mr. Pokémon's house, the prof calls me to say I need to come back right away, because someone stole one of his Pokémon! That guy really needs to pay more attention. I suppose it's not his fault, he was probably distracted.
So I hurry back towards New Bark Town, and right as I'm about to pass through Cherrygrove, I run into that douchebag from earlier. Turns out HE'S the one who stole the Pokémon, and now he wants to battle me with it. Of course he picks Totodile, the one that Pepper is weak to. Thankfully though, they're still just level 5 and they haven't learned any Water-type moves, so Pepper wins easily.
Mr. Douchebag doesn't seem butthurt that he lost, but he runs off after telling me his name and yelling about becoming the strongest trainer in the world. Sure, dude. You immediately got your ass beat but have fun with that.
Now that that's out of the way, I walk the rest of the way back to Elm's lab.
The Journey Begins
I arrive back home, and see what's going on at the lab. An officer was investigating the scene of the crime. I tell them what I know about the theft of Totodile. Wouldn't it be a kidnapping, actually? Or would it be a Pokénapping since a Pokémon was kidnapped?
Once the officer leaves, Elm questions me about the Mr. Pokémon errand. I show him the egg I got and tell him about getting a Pokédex, and he says I should keep working to become stronger as a Pokémon trainer. I hadn't really considered it before, but that seems like a perfect way to explore the world. I won't have to think too much about where I'm going as I can just let the gyms guide me to my next destination.
That settles it. From now on, I'm going to become the strongest trainer I can be, and see everything there is to see in Johto. I say goodbye to mom, and embark on my quest. This is the story of my journey as a Pokémon trainer.
Route 31
Let's see... the first gym is in Violet City. I'll need to pass through Route 31 to get there, so back to Route 30 it is.
While making my way there, I finally get a chance to catch some Pokémon with the Poké Balls I got from one of Elm's aides. My first catch is a Sentret. It doesn't seem very strong, but the more the merrier, I suppose. I name him Tanuki.
I also catch a Pidgey on Route 29, which I name Pudding. Having a Flying-type on my team will probably come in handy; Pepper is great, but I don't want him to have to handle everything by himself.
When I get back to Route 30, I'm able to take the path to Route 31 but I encounter a few trainers along the way. Time to get some battle experience. They're all kids though, and their Pokémon are weak so I make short work of them.
On Route 31 I also add two new members to my team: a Bellsprout and a Hoppip. Bellsprout, I dub thee Billiam, and Hoppip, I dub thee... Poppy. I want to give every Pokémon I catch a unique name, but I'm worried I'll run out of ideas...
It wasn't long before I reached Violet City, where I healed up my team and got to having a look around.
Violet City
So it looks like there are a few interesting places to check out here in Violet. There's a Pokémon school run by a guy named Earl. I ran into him when I decided to have a look at the gym, which is run by Falkner. Earl is... quite the character... He gives me some helpful advice, though.
I met a trainer who offered to trade me an Onix if I gave him a Bellsprout in exchange. Well, I just happen to have caught one. I'm a little sorry that my time with Billiam was so short-lived, but I agreed to the trade and received Rocky. He has some serious Defense, should be great against Normal-types.
Then there's Sprout Tower, which is full of Sages and wild Pokémon too... for some reason. If I get to the top, I'm awarded an HM. Not sure what it is, but I bet it'll be useful if I can reach it.
Sprout Tower
In the tower I focus on training up Pepper and Pudding. I want them to learn some new moves because I think they'll be the strongest Pokémon on my team. Pepper and Pudding, the power duo. I wonder how that would taste? Uh... probably not very good.
I catch one Pokémon on my way to the top: a Rattata. I've heard these Pokémon are surprisingly strong, especially when they use Hyper Fang, so even though they're common you shouldn't sleep on them. I name him Super Rat. I think I'm running out of name ideas already.
At the top I find... Sir Douchebag. Again. I've only seen him three times and I'm already sick of him. Looks like he beat the master and got the HM before me. Anyway, he peaces out and then I get to battle the master myself. Pudding does the lift here, punching through the master's team and earning me that HM.
Turns out it can teach one of my Pokémon the move Flash, which I think I'll need to get through Dark Cave at the end of Route 31.
Violet City Gym
Back in Violet City, I think I'll try my hand at beating Falkner. I have no idea how strong he is, but it'll be good to find out what I'm up against even if I have no chance of beating him right now.
I get a call from Joey, the trainer I fought on Route 30 right as I'm about to enter the gym. He did this when I went to Earl's school too, actually. So I went back to battle him again both times, but even after all that his Rattata is still only level 4. I feel kinda bad beating down this little kid's Pokémon over and over...
I caught some more Pokémon, too, while I was going back and forth. Enter Billiam II. I think I should keep around a Grass-type, just in case. I also added Caterpie to my repertoire, named him Freed.
Now, finally, I can enter the gym. There are two trainers that I fight before getting to Falkner. I fought them off with Rocky, since he can effortlessly tank their attacks. It did take a while though, as Rocky doesn't do a lot of damage... and misses his Tackle a lot. Rocky the Tackle-Misser, everyone.
Falkner
I make sure Rocky is healed up before I fight Falkner. But when I get into the fight, I find out that his Pokémon know Mud-Slap which is super effective against Rocky, and it reduces his accuracy, so his already weak and apparently inaccurate moves get even worse.
But even then, Rocky doesn't take much damage because his defense is so high. He's able to get through Falkner's Pidgey with some effort, but he's taken too much damage to keep fighting against Pidgeotto. I then send out Pudding, thinking I might be able to race Pidgeotto to the finish. Pidgeotto is faster though, so I have to withdraw Pudding to have Pepper deliver the finishing blow.
And that's that, I guess. Falkner wasn't much of a challenge at all. I expected this gym thing to be a lot harder, but I guess if this is all there is to it I should have no trouble getting through the others. I wonder if this Falkner guy really knows what he's doing, he almost seems like he's not really up to the task of running a gym.
Whatever the case, I'm rewarded with the Zephyrbadge and a TM for Mud-Slap. That could be pretty useful, I think I'll use it on one of my Pokémon. After exiting the gym I get another call from Elm saying I should go see his aide in the Pokémon Center.
Once I heal up my Pokémon there, the aide gives me the egg that I got from Mr. Pokémon earlier and says that Elm wants me to help him with his research by hatching it. I, uh... don't really know how to do that, but I'll do my best?
It's been a long day though, and I think it's time for a rest. I better gather my strength for the next leg of the journey and the next gym.
--------------------------------------------------
So, what did you think? Am I boring? Cringe? Let me know.
I want to try and make Pokéchronology as interesting as it can be, but it's largely a matter of trial and error, trying to figure out what sticks and what doesn't. I figure if these posts are going to be stupidly long then I should try to make them worth reading, at least.
That's also why it took me so long to start this volume. Well, I also wanted to figure out what I was doing beforehand. I spent a long time getting used to writing this way and trying to make the post more visually-appealing. They should be coming out faster and shorter going forward though.
My initial thoughts on Pokémon Crystal: this is a BIG step up from Generation I, in a lot of ways. Firstly, the quality of life features. Having a map without needing it as an item in your inventory is great. Items being sorted into different categories is great. Information about your Pokémon being easy to find and read is great.
Graphically, I think the game looks really good. It seems a little silly to say, but I honestly think it's one of the best-looking games of its era on this hardware.
Generation II introduces the ability for Pokémon to hold items like Berries. These are really nice and add a little extra depth and comfort to battles, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do with the various items throughout the game.
These are all small things, but all together they vastly enhance the Pokémon experience in my opinion. There are meaningful differences between this game and the last. Pokémon Crystal so far seems to be doing a solid job of taking existing mechanics and building upon them.
I have to say though, this game feels much easier than Yellow so far. Falkner is a complete joke compared to Brock, because all you have to do to beat him is not be weak to his moves. His Pokémon are even lower-leveled. Flying-types are otherwise not resistant to most of the things at your disposal this early on.
I do hope that the game starts to pose a challenge at some point. I was pretty happy with Yellow's difficulty curve. It was very manageable when I played smart, but put up just enough resistance that I couldn't do whatever I wanted and had to actually train my Pokémon to be effective. I beat that game without losing a single battle, so if Crystal is just easier then I don't expect it to ever really be difficult. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Jumping In (Dark!Steve Rogers x Reader)
Warnings: 18+ adult content!!, Kidnapping, smut, Dark fic, vaginal fingering, noncon/dubcon, yandere.
Summary: You submit your application to the Avengers as a joke. Youâre nowhere near qualified enough for the job. So why do they want you?
AN: A big thanks to @rayofdawnworld for commenting on âYour Roomâ that they wanted to know about the other Avengers. This one is (obviously) Steve and is happening chronologically before âYour Room.â You can read it by itself though! Â I also have a story forming for Bucky in my mind so Iâll probably do him next.Â
Youâve always been the type of person to jump into things without thinking. Itâs gotten you into plenty of trouble throughout your life but youâve always managed to get yourself out of it. Itâs opened up opportunities for you and taken you all over the world. You put in the application for SHIELD almost as a joke, thinking thereâs no way they would ever hire you, especially not to work with the Avengers.
The joke becomes serious when you get a call from Stark Tower offering you a job. You skim over the contract eagerly and sign it immediately, jumping on the opportunity to work your dream job.
After a whirlwind week you find yourself standing in the middle of a high tech training room surrounded by Avengers. Being around a group of people as powerful as the Avengers is intimidating to say the least. The contrast between you and them is stark and you feel your confidence slip trying to keep up with them. They all assure you that youâre doing great and theyâre glad to have you with them. It feels like a little family and you get pulled in immediately. You find yourself gravitating to Steve, or maybe he gravitates towards you. He shows up everywhere you go, at the water fountain filling up his bottle, running at the treadmill next to you, stretching on the mat. He watches you spar with different Avengers, giving advice and words of encouragement.
âKeep that arm up Y/N.â
âI will, thank you captain.â
âCall me Steve.â
âSteve.â Â You smile.
You spar with Bucky and try to ignore Steve's looks. You donât know if you feel flattered or uncomfortable with the attention heâs giving you. You decide that heâs probably just trying to be friendly since itâs your first day.
It doesnât stop though and you constantly find yourself in situations with Steve. Heâs in the elevator with you or walking by your room as youâre leaving. You even bump into him at the grocery store.
A week later you open your door to see Steve waiting for you just outside your room. Your heart does a flip at the sight of him standing in front of you. His hair is damp and you try to control your mind from imagining him in the shower. His tight white shirt shows off his muscles, which doesn't help your wandering mind one bit. You shift your eyes away from him and chastise yourself. God, He smells good and you wonder what soap he uses. He gives a cocky half smile and takes a step toward you.
âGood job yesterday.â He says, moving in front of your line of sight.
âThanks.â you smile and force yourself to look him in the eyes.
He puts his hands in his pockets and rocks on his feet looking nervous.
âI thought I could treat you to coffee?â
Your heart starts beating rapidly. Is he asking you on a date? Steve Rogers asking YOU on a date? It can't be that. The flirting has to be in your head.
âIâd like that,â You mirror him, putting your hands in your pockets. You realize too late that you donât have pockets though and end up awkwardly rubbing your hands against your sides. Â Steve lets out a chuckle and you cross your arms and laugh along with him.
You follow Steve to a nearby coffee shop and he orders you a drink. The two of you sit at a semi-private table in the back next to some barely cognizant university students who are furiously typing away on their laptops.
âHow are you enjoying being part of the team?â Steve asks.
âI love it! Everyone is really nice.â
âAre you nervous for your first first mission?â
âA little bit,â you confess.
âIâll be there with you, donât worry.â
That was definitely flirting, you think. Captain America is flirting with you.
You smile and take a sip of your coffee. This is like a romance novel, a cute coffee date with a literal super hero. It comes to an end though when you notice a kid taking a picture of the two of you. Steve frowns and cocks his head towards the prepubescent photographer.
âI think we should head back before we get more fans.â Steve Says.
Steve does a silly pose for the kid as he passes by and pulls out a signed Captain America card. The kid stands stunned looking at you as you walk out of the shop. Steve puts his hand on your back and leans in.
âSorry this was so short. Weâll have to go somewhere more private next time.â
âDonât apologize! The coffee was amazing, thank you so much.â
It only takes twenty minutes for you to start getting phone calls. A picture of you and Steve is all over the internet. It looks very incriminating, Steve's arm on your back and him smiling close to your ear. You answer your phone and hold it away from your ear as your friend Amy yells at you from the other end.
âCaptain America!â She screams over and over again.
âAre you guys dating now or...â
âNo, he was just being nice.â
âThe picture looks like heâs being a lot more than nice. Please hit that Y/N, if you donât Iâll scream.â
âYouâre already screaming.â you say with a laugh.
âSeriously though, I want to be invited to your wedding one day.â
âAmy! heâs hot for sure but heâs also kinda my boss and Iâm not ready for anything serious right now.â The picture of you and Steve is still in your mind. You can barely take care of yourself and certainly arenât ready for everything involved with dating Steve Rogers.
You hang up the phone and smile to yourself. You canât believe how your life has changed so fast. One day youâre working security at a hotel and the next youâre working with the avengers and flirting with Captain America.
---
You shake your foot nervously on the way to your first mission. Your role is simple, in fact it's almost impossible to mess up. Youâre nervous anyway though. Everyone tells you itâs normal for your first mission and you take deep breaths trying to calm down.
You exit the jet and make your way into town. Your only job is to distract your mark for five minutes. You check your watch and start your way toward your mark.
âExcuse me sir?â
âYes?â
âDo you know a good breakfast place around here?â
Itâs beyond easy. You keep the conversation up for five minutes and end it quickly. Steve gives you a pat on the back after, congratulating your successful first mission. It feels off. Anyone could do what you did. Youâre nowhere near as skilled as the Avengers and donât understand why you would be picked for the job.
âWhatâs wrong doll?â
âI just donât feel like Iâm really good enough to be part of this team I guess.â
âYouâre more than good enough.â
âBut you guys are so much stronger... and faster... and smarter.â
âWe look for more than those things when picking recruits. Trust me, youâre exactly what I⊠We need.â
You feel a little better and push away your doubts.
---
The missions become harder after the first one but youâre still never put in direct danger. They say you need more training before taking on more dangerous roles and you agree. Youâre not sure if youâll ever improve enough though and it makes you guilty, like youâre taking up space in a team that someone else could have. As you start becoming more part of the group Steve starts coming onto you more. He takes you out several times and starts becoming more physically affectionate. You like Steve. Aside from being gorgeous heâs old school, bringing you flowers and opening doors. Thereâs Something about him that feels disingenuous and your gut prevents you from starting a serious relationship.
You meet a barista at the same coffee shop Steve took you to. Heâs cute and you  decide to give him your number impulsively. He texts you that evening and you stay up late texting back and forth. The next day everyone stares at you as you stretch before your training. Youâre not sure why until you notice Steve standing outside of his office.
âY/N, can I see you in here please.â His voice is an octave lower than usual and a chill runs down your spine.
âOf course.â
Steve closes the door and motions for you to sit down.
âIâm aware that youâve exchanged numbers with someone who is unapproved.â
You nod slowly, confused how he knows at all and why itâs a big deal.
âThis is a huge security risk.â
âI already ran a background check on him.â
Steve sits on the edge on his desk and caresses your cheek.
âWhy do you want to talk to this boy when you have me?â
You push his hand away.
âI mean, I like you Steve but Iâm just not ready for the commitment yet, you know that.â
His eyes narrow and he looks at the hand you pushed away.
âI understand.â He says.
You stand to leave and he calls after you.
âOh, and remember you have a curfew. I donât want to have to reprimand you.â
Steve feels different, unhinged. Youâve only been late a few times and only by a few minutes. You push away your worry hoping it will get better. Heâs probably just not used to feeling rejected. Heâll get over it.
---
âY/N, donât you dare enter that building.â
âThere are still people inside Steve!â
âItâs too dangerous. Help is on the way, donât do it.â
You rip the com out of your ear and run into the building. Thereâs smoke everywhere and you cover your face with your arm. You make fast work of reaching the blocked room, breaking the door in and letting the room of people out. You escort them out of the building and to safety.
âThank you so much.â A woman says, hugging you.
âNo problem.â You smile.
The building starts collapsing in front of your eyes and you watch it burn. You walk back to the jet, coughing and bruised and get checked out as soon as you land.
Steve waits for you outside of medical.
âWhat were you thinking Agent!â
âNot now Steve.â
âItâs Captain and yes now.â
You sigh.
âI was thinking, Captain, that I needed to get those people out and I was right.â
âAnd what would have happened if the building had come down on you? Help was coming and you had an order. Youâre lucky your lungs are ok with the smoke you inhaled.â
You push Steve out of your way and walk towards your room.
âIt was a risk I was willing to take,â you call back.
You reach your room and take a long shower, thinking about everything. As much as you want to fit in with them you just donât. Something tells you that you need to quit. You need to get out of here and never look back. you decide that youâll hand in a two week notice tomorrow.
The next morning you wake and dress quickly still feeling the same as the night before. You head to your door and turn the knob but find it locked.
âWhat the fuck?â you pound on the door but nobody answers. You pick up your phone to call for help. It wonât connect to the internet or call anyone. Your computer is the same way. As the day passes you start feeling more and more uneasy. They have to know by now that something is wrong with you. your voice is raw from yelling for help and your hands bloody and bruised from pounding on the door.
Finally, hours later you hear the click of your door unlocking. You open it to see Steve standing with his arms crossed on the other side.
âI was locked in my room.â you say in a quiet voice.
âI know, I locked you in.â
âWhatâs wrong with you? Thatâs insane Steve!â
Adrenaline rushes through your body and you start pacing. Everything is telling you to get out. This is not what you signed up for.
âI quit.â you say defiantly.
Steve rushes toward you, pinning you to the wall. None of your self defence training helps you. Heâs so much bigger and stronger, trying to fight is a joke. You know your best bet is to stun him somehow and run but you can barely move.
âYou canât quit doll.â He brushes a hand down your body, giving your butt a squeeze. Your eyes widen in shock.
âIâll report you.â
âTo who?â
You start thinking, your eyes darting back and forth. He slides his hand into the front of your pants and rubs the bulge in his pants against you. your breath hitches and you relax your body a bit. You scream at yourself to do something. The hand in your pants rubs against your clit expertly and it takes everything you have not to let out a moan.
âAh, I see youâre getting it.â
His finger slides to your entrance and he prods you before submerging his finger. You gasp at the intrusion and realize that heâs barely holding onto you anymore. Your hands grasp his shoulders and you lean against him.
âThis would have been much easier if you had followed my plan. You had to go putting yourself in danger.â He chides.
âI donât know what youâre talking about. Please youâre scaring me Steve.â you say,
âIt was going so well but youâre unpredictable, flirting with that barista.â
He pushes his finger in deeper and you whimper.
âIf I donât take action now I might lose you and I canât lose you.â
âGet away from me,â you beg.
He grasps your hip painful tight.
âYou're my girl now, ok? My girl doesnât disobey me, especially not on missions.â
He pumps his finger, coating it with slick.
You realize that he wonât listen to reason but you try anyway.
âIâm so sorry youâre right Iâm your⊠your girl, just let me go please.â
He pulls his finger out and gives you a kiss.
âSee, thereâs a good girl.â
He pulls a ring out of his pocket and places it on your finger. His watch vibrates and he looks at it before kissing you on the cheek.
âWe can celebrate tomorrow.â He winks.
He leaves you in the hallway and you back into your room, shaking and crying. Â You donât care if he locks you in again. You need to be in a place where you feel somewhat safe and can process everything that just happened. You take the ring off and throw it across the room.
The night is spent curled in your bed crying and the next morning you walk self consciously to the kitchen. Bucky sits at the counter eating cereal and he knits his brow when he sees you.
âHey, whatâs wrong.â
You shake your head.
âYou can tell me.â He looks at you with his big kind eyes and you decide to confide in him.
âSteve⊠assaulted me. Heâs out of his mind, saying all sorts of crazy stuff. I donât know what to do.â
Bucky holds you close.
âYouâre his girl Y/N, donât provoke him and youâll have a good life.â
You tear yourself away and look at him with disbelief.
âItâs not a secret Y/N and weâre on Steve's side.â
You back away and head straight for the exit hitting Tony on the way
âWoah, whatâs the rush?â
âI quit.â you say, tears starting to fall.
âYou canât quit princess, youâre Steveâs.â
Your breaths become shallow and your head starts feeling light.
âHow did you think you got the job in the first place Y/N?â
You run to the elevator slamming the button over and over but it wonât let you down.
âWhatâs wrong with Y/N?â Thor walks over.
âSheâs having a hard time adjusting to being Steveâs,â Tony answers.
âLet me out.â you yell.
Steve comes out of nowhere catching you in his arms and you throw your head back and duck. He stumbles back. Other Avengers start to gather and you pull your fists up in defense.
âI want to leave.â
âCome with me back to your room doll, it doesnât have to be this hard.â
You stand your ground and Steve goes into a fighting stance. You donât even have a chance, he has you trapped in his arms within minutes.
âI donât understand.â
âWe got your application in the mail. As soon as I saw your picture I knew you were the one Iâve been looking for.â he coos.
âWhy go through the whole facade?â
âUse your brain Y/N. Everyone knows weâre together. Thereâs pictures of us everywhere online. Youâve talked to friends and family about our relationship. It wonât look weird when you drop off for a while because of your job and when you come back engaged nobody will blink an eye.â
âNo.â
You look at the Avengers, youâre family. None of them do anything to help you. Every single one turns their back and walks away nonchalantly like itâs just another normal day.
Steve drags you to your room and closes the door. He walks over to where you threw your ring grabbing it off the floor, and places it back on your finger.
âThis doesnât come off again,â He says.
You look at the ring and back at Steve over and over trying to make sense of all of it. Steve walks purposefully to the drawer you keep your candles and lights several, placing them around the room.
He backs you into the bed and undresses you slowly and meticulously. He sits back and looks at your naked body, taking his time touching and examining every piece. He grabs your legs and parts them, looking at your pussy and two fingers in.
âSo wet for me already.â
You shake your head and he lands a slap on your thigh.
âNo.â He commands.
âBe good so I donât have to punish you. Youâve seen me work, you know what Iâm capable of.â
You bite your tongue and force yourself to lie still as he slams his cock into you. You cry out in pain and he rubs your arm and whispers sweet things. He kisses you as he pushes his cock deep into you. He grabs your chin and squeezes until you open up and let his tongue in. Â you reach out and grab his arms and he pulls at your leg until you hug them around him.
âYou can come Y/N.â he whispers
You shake your head.
He reaches between you and pushes against your clit. You fight against it for as long as you can but it becomes too much. An orgasm crashes over you and you flutter around his cock. He thrusts hard enough that you get pushed into the headboard and seconds later heâs coming in you. He smiles down at you, lovingly stroking you face.
âI love you Y/Nâ
You stay silent and he pulls you into a constricting hug.
âDonât worry doll, youâll love me soon.â Â
Youâve always been the type of person to jump into things without thinking. Itâs gotten you into plenty of trouble throughout your life. Youâve always been able to get yourself out of it,
but this time.
This time you jumped too far.

what are your fave diana wynne jones books that arenât howlâs moving castle??
Oh whattt a lovely and fun question which I was definitely not secretly hoping someone would ask!!!! Yay!!
Hm okay so, not specifically in order, probably my top fave Diana Wynne Jones books would be:
Deep Secret! Deep Secret is not just one of my favorite books by DWJ but one of my favorite books full stop! Itâs so good. Basically, the premise is that there is an infinite series of interconnected worlds, some of which have magic and some of which donât, at the center of which is a vast interdimensional magical empire. Magic in the multiverse is overseen by an organization of magicians called Magids and there must always be a specific number of Magids in existence. When Rupert, a young Magid living on Earth, discovers that his mentor has died (ish) he becomes unexpectedly responsible for finding and training the next Magid, which is extremely inconvenient timing for him because the aforementioned magical empire is on the brink of civil war and chaos and its his job to stop it. And also almost all of this takes place at...a science fiction convention. Itâs amazing. I have read this book minimum four (probably more) times and every time itâs absolutely delightful and hilarious. I would like to go to the sci fi convention in this novel more than anything. Itâs such a good read and its one of her few novels which is specifically aimed at adults, so I would EXTREMELY recommend it. Plus the romance in it is extremely good...not exactly enemy-to-lovers but more like âannoys-the-shit-out-of-each-otherâ to lovers. (**One note about this one...thereâs a few very briefly mentioned side characters who are gender noncomforming and even tho they are actually portrayed very positively, itâs not necessarily ideal and 100% respectful (basically the protags comment on them being very beautiful and nice but also keep trying to guess their ârealâ gender). Additionally thereâs a different briefly mentioned side character who is fat who isnât portrayed very nicely. Both of these are brief incidents, just wanted to provide a warning for them)
Dark Lord of Derkholm - Okay this one is weirdly hard to summarize but itâs about this magical fantasy world which has been taken overy and is being used as a tourist destination by a non-magical world (heavily implied to be Earth) for people who want to role play at being in a classic high fantasy story, including fighting and killing THE DARK LORD...who is really just a random magician pretending to be evil. The inhabitants of the fantasy world do not enjoy this and are trying desperately to stop the tours, but unfortunately according to a magical oracle, their best hope of stopping the tours is this yearâs Dark Lord, a hapless farmer magician named Derk, and his, um, eccentric family consisting of his glamorous wife, seven children (of whom five are griffins and one is a bard) and a simply improbable amount of magical animals. And also there is a very good dragon. I think Derkholm is so great as a novel b/c itâs a very funny, loving but sharp, parody of high fantasy stories...but a lot of the time parodies only function as parodies but not as good stories in their own right, you know? But this novel completely functions as a story too, and in fact the first time I read at maybe age nine or ten, the high fantasy parody went completely over my head...but I still loved it. I also really love that this novel is very accessible to all ages, I think I enjoy reading it as an adult just as much as I did as a kid, which is rare. For anyone who has read Howlâs Moving Castle but nothing else by DWJ and isnât sure where to start, I think this is a great place to start. (TW: Thereâs a brief, non-explicit scene which has implied sexual assault.)Â
Fire and Hemlock - This may be the most controversial one since it features a romance with a significant age gap where the two characters meet when one is a child and the other an adult. And I fully agree that thatâs :/ and normally that trope is NOT my thing but it doesnât come off at all creepy in this story imo, and if you think you can deal with that then this is a very weird, atmospheric, cool book about storytelling and fairy tales and growing up. The short summary (this is another hard to summarize one) is that as a child, Polly encounters and strikes up a friendship and correspondence with a young man, Tom, which mainly consists of the two of them jointly making up a silly, ongoing fairy tale type story...but things get weird when parts of their story start to come true in real life. Iâve only read this one twice but it really stuck with me and in fact just describing it here...really makes me want to read it again!
The Chrestomanci Series - So all of the above are either specifically aimed at adults or a general audience whereas the Chrestomanci series is aimed at children, mainly a middle grade type audience. And tbh I started reading them as a kid (fond memory - I bought an omnibus of the first two with my allowance money...b/c it had a cat on the cover!) so I donât know what it would be like to first read these as an older teen or an adult. BUT. Honestly they are really good and would be a quick read so I do still recommend them. Thereâs seven overall, with th seventh being a collection of short stories, and theyâre only semi-chronological so the reading order isnât vital. My recommended order (b/c this the order I read them in, haha) is Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, The Magicians of Caprona, Witch Week, The Pinhoe Egg, Conradâs Fate, and then Mixed Magic you can read whenever you want so long as you read it after Charmed Life and The Magicians of Caprona. So the very core premise of it is not dissimilar to Deep Secret - thereâs an infinite series of worlds/universes and thereâs a magician, called the Crestomanci in this case, who is responsible for making sure magic isnât abused across the multiverse. The Chrestomanci is an extremely powerful enchanter who has nine lives, and the novels are various semi-connected stories about the adventures of Chrestomanci as an adult and child. Chrestomanci is a title so itâs not always the same person, but for the majority of the stories it is the same guy and heâs...the best/worst...Heâs this extremely handsome, charismatic, powerful enchanter who is very good at his job, loves his wife a lot, wears very beautiful clothes and makes, um, questionable life choices and is very annoying to everyone. Iâve thought about this very hard and I believe that heâs what happens when you take a fundamentally chaotic good person and make him do a fundamentally lawful good job; yes, heâs going to do it and do it well, but he is going to do it in the most chaotic, ridiculous way possible, and he IS going to die at an ALARMING rate, doing things that would not normally kill a person, such as playing cricket and trying to catch stray cats. He also, as previously mentioned, frequently wears very dramatic silk dressing gowns with elaborate embroidery, which the protag of Charmed Life finds deeply alarming. Itâs very odd to me how these books donât seem to be well known, because the Chrestomanci books were some of my absolute favorite books as a child. I still have my omnibus editions of the first four novels and they are very worn and very beloved. And itâs so WILD to me that I donât think I have ever talked to someone who also read those as a kid! Like Iâm not saying those people donât exist, Iâm sure I just havenât met them, but thatâs so weiiirddddd to me. If I bring up Tamora Pierce or Garth Nix or other authors of weird, eccentric childrenâs fantasy novels to other avid childhood consumers of fantasy, people usually know what I mean, but Chrestomanci and its just..crickets. Is it b/c sheâs British? Anyway all of the Chrestomanci books are very degrees of good, but if I had to pick a favorite, I think, controversial choice here, it would be Conradâs Fate. Particularly in terms of recommendations to others, Conradâs Fate works as a standalone and, unlike the other books in the series, itâs aimed more at a YA audience, so if you wanted to read a Chrestomanci novel without getting into the whole series, thatâs a good way to go. Itâs about a boy, Conrad, who is told that he has a terrible, possibly fatal Fate awaiting him unless he goes to work as a servant at a wealthy, and weird, estate neighboring his town, at which place he encounters things including color changing livery, an extremely annoying teenage Chrestomanci, and the greatest liminal space house EVER. Itâs like a combination of an upstairs/downstairs Downton Abbey type social drama with bizarre fantasy shenanigans. How could that not be good??
Also as Honorable Mentions - A Sudden and Wild Magic and The Time of the Ghost. A Sudden and Wild Magic is fun b/c itâs one of her few works aimed specifically at adults and itâs (gasp) a little bit NAUGHTY which I was very surprised and delighted by when I read it. (This may seem like an unfair statement considering that Deep Secret fully has an orgy in it, but Rupert is so fundamentally unnaughty of a character that he completely unnaughtifies the whole novel, whereas Sudden and Wild Magic embraces being a (little bit) naughty.)  The Time of the Ghost on the other hand is weird and haunting and creepy and atmospheric. I only read it once but itâs one of those novels you just think about periodically and go âwait what the fuck that was a weird novelâ (Also known as the âGarth Nixâ effect)Â
#the ask and the answer#i spent...too long writing this out but i love talking about her novels soo muchhhh#that i couldn't help myself!!!!!!!!#diana wynne jones#things you didn't care to know about veronica

hi, any advice on timeline and era etc stuff? I have dyscalculia so numbers and measurements are meaningless to me and itâs really difficult to figure out how much time should lapse (on a large scale; time periods, millennia, eras, etc, not stuff like in one persons lifespan) between eras and events, especially in regards to political n social n technological etc changes
Feral: That depends. There isnât one answer. Youâre asking for longer time periods than a generation or a lifetime, but for scale, take whatâs happening now. How many calamities, major political events, social trends, and changes in technology (and how we interact with it) have happened in the year 2020? Since the year 2016? Since 2008? Since 2001? How are they grouped together or spaced apart? And these are all working on each other. In the USA where I live, the 9/11 attacks absolutely have a direct causal effect with the politics that led to the 2016 election (actually before that a Supreme Court decision in the 2000 election also had an impact on that result), and the results of the 2016 election impacted how COVID has been handled this year. Thatâs 20 years, so when weâre looking at longer timeframes, we scale up. We see gaps and groupings and there just isnât a specific âoh every decade/score/century, these types of events happen.â
To quote a particularly relevant introduction on Wikipedia:
This results in descriptive abstractions that provide convenient terms for periods of time with relatively stable characteristics. However, determining the precise beginning and ending to any âperiodâ is often arbitrary, since it has changed over time over the course of history.
To the extent that history is continuous and not generalized, all systems of periodization are more or less arbitrary. Yet without named periods, however clumsy or imprecise, past time would be nothing more than scattered events without a framework to help us understand them.
Eras, of the non-geological or -cosmological sort, or time periods are culturally determined, completely variable in length, and often overlap. For example, the beginning of the Victorian Era, 64 years, (defined by Victoriaâs rule of England) of the Anglo-influenced world overlapped with the Antebellum Era, 78 years, (defined by political and social tensions in the lead up to the American Civil War) of the United States, which is also part of the Anglo-influenced world, and then following the end of the Antebellum Era, was the American Civil War, 4 years, and then the Reconstruction Era, 14 years (the first 2 of which are within the Civil War), which are both fully contained within the Victorian Era. Typically, when you are trying to think about eras, think about political rulership, wars, and large scale trends like artistic styles. It may also be helpful to familiarize yourself with the Three-Age System, which can be applied individually on cultures, rather describing trends for the whole world.
What it really comes down to when we think of eras and time periods is almost like a type of pareidolia. People see groupings of like things happening and put this grouping into a bubble of time, which kinda doesnât actually exist in objective reality and is more or less a group hallucination on a massive scale. It calls to mind what Zenoâs arrow might have actually been trying to describe - not to say that this paradox is infallible, but itâs an interesting thought exercise, especially once you get into the quantum Zeno effect.
Now that I have fully diverged from the question at hand, weâll get back to it. Letâs look at one technology type and how much time elapses between developments as well as some tie-in technological, social, and political forces that may be acting on the developments or that the developments might be acting on. Iâll also note how this technology traverses the eras of history as I find that looking at one discrete set over time is easier than just trying to look at the big picture. Letâs look at the history of printing.
(With hopes that it will be easier for you to conceptualize, I will use simplified (aka rounded up/down) timeframes written numerically rather than spelled out or via terms like decade or century so at the very least you can compare length of numbers. Iâm also going to link as many Wikipedia articles as I can - I like Wikipedia for this because of its incredible cross-indexing and how it strings relevant articles together into a series, often chronologically. If the numbers are still challenging for you, I will summarize without at the end.)
5,520 years ago, the very first form of printing we know about is done with cylinders rolled over wet clay in Sumer in 3500 BCE, the beginning of the Early Bronze Age.
3,700 years later, woodblock printing is developed in China somewhere around 200 CE/AD, just after the end of the Pax Romana in Europe.
700 years later, the next development of printing is movable type, which is developed in China in 1040. 26 years later, on the other side of the world, in 1066 is the Battle of Hastings and the establishment of the Norman Era of rulership in England, in another 20 years, in 1086, the Domesday Book is hand written in 2 volumes: 1 is 764 8âx15â pages, the other 900 8âx11â pages.
400 years later gives us the Gutenburg printing press that is developed in Germany (at the time in the Holy Roman Empire) in 1440. This is during the Renaissance Era; itâs also the Era of Humanism, and often called the Early Modern Period. Martin Luther will write the 95 Theses less than 80 years later and start the Protestant Reformation, largely thanks to the ability for the theses to be easily copied by the printing press and spread quickly.
75 years later we have etching in 1515. 90 years later, the first weekly âtrueâ newspaper, the Relation, begins printing in 1604.
130 years later we have mezzotint in 1642, which is the start of the First English Civil War, which will last for 4 years. Depending on your preference, the Age of Enlightenment either began 5 years before or 40 years later (unless youâre French).
130 years later we have aquatint in 1772. That is right at the beginning of the American Revolution: 2 years after the Boston Massacre; 1 year before the Boston Tea Party; 2 years before the Intolerable Acts and the First Continental Congress; 3 years before Patrick Henryâs âGive Me Liberty or Give Me Deathâ Speech (which is printed and shared across the colonies), Paul Revereâs Ride, and the Battle of Lexington & Concord; and finally 4 years before Thomas Paineâs Common Sense is published, the signing of the Declaration of Independence (which is printed and shared across the colonies), Nathan Haleâs execution for treason against the Crown, and Washingtonâs Crossing of the Delaware.
25 years later lithography is developed in 1796; the year prior Napoleon overthrows le Directoire.
40 years later we have chromolithography in 1837, the year Victoria ascends and the first electric/battery powered locomotive is invented.
5 years later is the rotary press in 1843. The First Industrial Revolution is over.
15 years later is the hectograph in 1860. 1 year later, the American Civil War begins.
15 years later is offset printing in 1875. 1 year before, the first commercial typewriter becomes available. 1 year later is Bell and Watsonâs first phone call in 1876.
10 years later is hotmetal typing in 1884.
1 year later is the mimeograph in 1885. 2 years later is Black Monday. 5-10 years later the radio is invented.
20 years later is the photostat and rectigraph in 1907.
4 years later is screen printing in 1911. 3 years later WWI begins in 1914.
10 years later is the spirit duplicator in 1923. The Roaring Twenties.
2 years later is dot matrix printing in 1925. 4 years later is the Great Crash.
10 years later is xerography in 1938, the same year as the first digital computer. 1 year later WWII begins in 1939.
2 years later is spark printing in 1940. 1 year later is the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
9 years later is phototypesetting in 1949. The USSR detonates their first atomic bomb.
1 year later is inkjet printing in 1950. Truman orders the development of the hydrogen bomb. Apartheid becomes law in South Africa.
7 years later is dye-sublimation in 1957. 6 years later, Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his âI Have a Dreamâ Speech.
12 years later is laser printing in 1969, the summer of which is known for very Very.
3 years later is thermal printing in 1972. The break-in at the Watergate Office Building is this same year and 2 years later Nixon resigns.
14 years later is 3D printing in 1986, the year Pixar Animation is founded and the year after the beginning of the Iran-Contra Affair.
1 year later is solid ink printing in 1987. 2 years later is the invention of the World Wide Web, and the internet as we know it.
4 years later is digital printing in 1991, the same year the USSR dissolved. 2 years before, the Berlin Wall fell.
There have been no significant developments in the history of printing since 1991.
So, letâs look at some averages to help us consume this data. Printing has a history of 5,520 years. It took 3,700 years for another development to occur, and then another 700 years after that - in other words, in the first 4,400 years of printing, there were 3 developments, equalling to an average of 1 every 1,470 years. In the 400 years between 1440 and 1843, Â there were 7 developments (average of 1 every 57 years). In the next 100 years between 1860 and 1957, there were 14 developments (average of 1 every 7 years but with 1 year having 2 developments simultaneously). In the next 22 years between 1969 and 1991, there were 5 developments (average of 1 every 4 years).
While the general trend is that the more a technology develops, the faster it develops, a trend is not the whole picture. Consider: in the 90 years of 1796-1885, there were 6 developments, making the average 1 every 15 years. In the 85 years of 1907-1991, there were 15 developments, making the average 1 every 6 years. There has not been a development in the past 30 years! There hasnât been this large of a gap since 1837, 180 years ago.
In general, without numbers, what I think we can see here is that sometimes a certain development, like the printing press, can usher in a new era, and sometimes reactions to what else is happening in the world can pressure someone into developing something new, but often times, most times, when you look at just one thing under microscope over time, why that thing is produced in this era but not that era has nothing to do with the eras in question. When we create time periods, weâre generally doing it after the fact. No one living under the rule of the Roman Empire in 100 CE was thinking to themselves, âah yes, the Pax Romana, when we have peace for 200 years!â
So applying all of this to worldbuilding, I see two methods that you can use together, to create a timeline that makes sense and is useful to your storytelling.
Method the first, arbitrarily create time bubbles of various lengths - I recommend the use of index cards for this. Index card A is 7 years; card B is 150 years; card C is 47 years and so on. Then take big ideas and put those onto your cards; use inspiration from real history. âI want the War of the Roses but condensed into 7 years.â âA Mongolian Empire type expansion happens over 150 years.â âThereâs a 47 year Renaissance of fascination with Ancient History.â Then take those cards, lay them out into roughly the order in which you want them to occur, maybe overlap them a little, especially if they are happening in different parts of your world. Remember that time is not actually linear and things do not happen in a linear, narrative manner in the real world, so there can be wild leaps; there can be regressions; and you donât have to follow real world history here - though you may want to the first time as a helpful exercise. Itâs also very unlikely that you will ever have to know exactly how many years are between the eras or what the interstitial eras are.
Method the second, list all the major historical events, inventions, etc that you want/need to have happened. Start with what directly impacts your main characters and plot. âMCâs great-grandfather is humiliatingly defeated in battle, casting a pall of embarrassment across the generations following and ultimately putting the MC in the position that she starts in.â âThe first great wizard codifies the 10 Laws of the Important Magical Order that the MC is trying to earn her place in.â Put these in an order that makes sense to you, keeping in mind that itâs not going to be a perfect progression. Again, you donât need to know how many years there are between each event, but if great-grandpa was the last in a very long line of family members allowed to be in the Important Magical Order, then that IMO had to be founded first, and there would probably be some events between these two.
Then, when you have your two timelines, one of era/time periods and one of events, graft them together. You may have to shift some things to make it work, but consider the âfeelingâ or theme of the eras and what events make sense in relation to those feelings. Additionally would this event be more suited to happening when the era is new and is finding itself or when the era is solidly on course or is it an event that would completely shatter the illusion of the era and usher in a new one? Does it make sense for your great wizard to be codifying her laws in the expansion of an empire, or during a period of relative peace and prosperity in an established empire, or before empires were a thing in this world and few traveled far from home?
Tex: Iâve found that historically important events are caused for roughly two reasons - one, an invention that others capitalize on for an exponential growth into other inventions/social uses, and two, someone got sick of someone elseâs crap and did something about it. Natural disasters will happen with enough frequency to be noted (see: the Little Ice Age, the Black Death, and the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa), although thereâs little prediction for them because of the lack of observable build up in activity.
To pull from Feralâs timeline of examples, writing is popularly attributed to being invented in Sumer, 5,520 years ago - itâs our oldest found example, at any rate, though Iâve learned to never say never on archaeological discoveries.
What prompted this invention? Things rarely occur out of the blue, and rarely without interaction from other domains - where could writing have come from? Maybe art? What about from the creation of a tool, a reuse of certain skill sets? Something else we havenât thought of yet?
So thatâs one half of the question. But what about the other half - what did people around the inventor (multiple inventors?) think of this new thing? Deliberately associating a particular sound with a particular object - even a 2D object like pressing shapes into a piece of clay - and then standardizing it, is no mean feat. How did this agreement even happen? Were there arguments about how to do these graphemes, how best to shape them? What about which phoneme to each?
I doubt Sumerian cuneiform was created in a day, and likewise I doubt that language popped into existence on a whim. To keep pulling from this example, language composition has a strong effect on how we interact with our environment (University of Missouri-St Louis Libraries), but it conversely is also deeply affected by the environment its users create (Nature).
Because of this, I think itâs easier to work from a different angle - figure out what your major events are, and what eras youâre covering. If these major events also define an era, thatâs even better! Working out how long everything each thing takes is ultimately a bunch of minor details, so itâs up to you how much your plot actively needs them, rather than decoration to your story meant to amuse you more than your audience.

The Destiel Folder: Season 10
[Season 4; Season 5; Season 6; Season 7; Season 8; Season 9]
Episode 1:
Cas is slowly dying, practically naked, in a bed, and the first thing he says when talking about Dean is "I miss him" (6:35), with a soft smile. "Why would he just disappear?"
... I'm sorry but If Cas Were A Woman, this would look like a scene from a movie or something, where the wife talks to a friend over the phone about her missing husband. JUST SAYING
Crowley: "The girl seemed nice. Slightly damaged. I could see the old you falling for that." (9:29) uhm... who else is "nice and slightly" damaged? I don't know... CASTIEL??!!!
So... these two men (actors Todd Mann and Brad Mann) we see with the DemonGang, are real life twins (9:14).
At (27:18), Crowley states him and Dean did "extroardinary things to triplets" ... and, well, the only twins with a possible other sibling we see are... them
And this is not the first time we hear about Dean doing "things to triplets" with a buddy of his (15x07)... and the first time he was NOT a demon... so, there's that. And triplets don't necessarily mean "all females"
Cas, while talking about the good things that come with choices, mentions "hope, love, dreams" (39:06), and Hannah points out that "those are human things". Human things...
Cas is talking about his own personal experiences with creating chaos, so those are the things he felt after rebelling for... Dean... WOW. ICWAW, it would totally be read it as a reference to Dean. A romantic one. Fight me
Episode 2:
Cas is dying, just got back from a fight that left him wounded, doesn't have enough power to heal himself, is on a mission to restore Heaven, and once again he chooses to go save Dean (9:35), and the way rage builds in his eyes when learning Dean has become a demon. Look at this shit
I might be crazy, but this feels like a touching metaphor to me:
"I think you don't know what you want. Tell me, Dean. What are you? A demon? [...] Maybe you're human. [...] Why don't you do us all a great, big favor... and pick a bloody side!" (22:22)
METAPHOR
Episode 3:
We are reminded that, even tho in terrible conditions, on the verge of death, Cas is willing to risk it all to save Dean, and is devastated by the thought of Dean not making it (4:47 - 5:17)
This is so funny to me, I'm sorry, but Cas is so visibly uncomfortable with Hannah touching him, it's hilarious (15:58)
"I've been around humans for long enough to see how easily distractions occur. Emotions, feelings... They're dangerous temptations." (22:32) like rebelling against your own kind, destroying your home, falling... all for a human?
"I'm trying to keep our priorities clear." Moments earlier, Cas listed "Getting to Dean" (22:17) before anything else. In fact, Hannah says "I am very clear of my priorities... and yours." = Dean (23:00)
Cas is not sure whether the cure will kill Dean or not, and in any case, he wraps his arms around him, and softly says "It's over... Dean it's over." (35:40) as if hushing him to sleep, in what could have been their last moments together... wow. Think about this ICWAW
"Well, I can see his point. Only humans can feel real joy, but... also such profound pain. This is easier." (36:17) Look at the way Sam is looking at Cas looking at Dean
BITCH OKAY!!
SAM KNOWS
POSSIBILE future Empty reference "real joy"
Cas already stated he misses being human, but knows how fragile they are in both body and spirit:
Castiel really wants to be with Dean. For real. But maybe he thinks (see season 9) him being an angel is an obstacle to their feelings.
Only by being human he can truly be happy (MMMMMMHH SEASON 15), but isn't sure he could handle the pain that comes with it. A possible rejection, the thought of Dean dying, him leaving Dean... MMMMHHHHH
"You look terrible." [...] "Well, you, on the other hand, you... *checks out Cas* Looking good." (39:09) full homo right there. Also parallel with Ketch in 13x18 ("You don't look good." "Yeah, well, you're not my type, either.")
The way they are looking at each other here... man.
Cas is so happy to have Dean back, and Dean looks hurt about Cas leaving so soon.
"So... so, you're back?" "At least temporarily." (39:27) bitch, you know that's not what he ment.
In all of this, Cas is trying to make Dean feel better about the whole situation (DAT SMILE 40:18), and Dean replies with "I'm glad you're back, man.", basically no-homoing himself...
Cas starts walking out of the room, but stops and turns back [insert concerned husband here] (40:27), and Dean has that hopeful look in his eyes, like Cas is going to stay, and the hurtful look comes back as soon as Cas is gone
Episode 4:
"On your knees!" "Wow, I'm awfully flattered-" (34:33) SASSY BI DEAN IS THE DEAN WE DESERVE
Episode 5:
Fucking kill me NOW!!! Dean's reaction to Destiel is PRICELESS!! And even before he learns what that is, he just looks at the girls playing him and Cas and... freezes for a moment (13:18) And the eyebrow raise thingy at (13:34)... what's going on in your brain, Dean?
I'd like to point out that the Italian translation for "You can't spell 'subtext' without S-E-X" is, for once, AMAZING:
"It's just that... their bond is so strong it has subtext of a... sexual nature."
THANK YOU ITALIAN DUB! JUST THIS ONCE, THANK YOU! (13:43)
Also at (9:44) Dean immediately reacts to the implication of Wincest subtext, shutting it down and telling the girls to take a step back, but with Destiel he is like... alright
... this is so fucking cute, (25:54) Dean adjusts the girl playing Cas' tie so that it's messed up like the real Cas'. ADORABLE
SAM SHIPS IT (13:57) and is teasing the SHIT out of Dean, who reacts like someone being teased about their crush. Just saying (14:08 - 14:52) [AND THIS HAPPENS IN FRONT OF A PINK-BLUE WALL]
"I know I have expressed some differences of opinion regarding this version of Supernatural." (26:44) ... oookay meta? *turns to "Cas"* "And I want you to put as much sub into that text as you possibly can." ... oKAY?!
Episode 7:
Cas being extremely uncomfortable with women is too fucking funny to me (5:03 - 12:51)
Episode 9:
(15:13) Alright, so, this is a date... what now? Anyway, nice bi flannel, Dean. And the little sweet smiles you two are giving each other? So fucking precious (16:01)
"I ain't exactly a role model." "That's not true." (16:07) how Dean looks at Cas right after that? BABIES!
"How are you, Dean?" "Fine." "*I-call-bullshit look*" "I'm great!" "No, you're not." (16:18) #MARRIED
As Cas is choke-holding a guy, Dean, clearly amused (almost proudly), says "I'd do what he says." (22:17) Like that time with Raphael in 5x03, Dean likes it when Cas gets rough
Episode 10:
Shut the fuck up and marry each other already so you can finally actually BE the old married coupleâąïž you ALREADY ARE (22:17)
This is the "My husband is so FUCKING STUPID" look (22:30)
"I was hoping you might reach out to her." "... Me? I'm probably the last person she'd want to hear from." [...] "All I know... is she won't talk to me." (23:03) #MARRIED, PARENTS, PERIODT
Shut the fuck up. Cas is the dad trying to figure out technology (23:36) "I'll text you her number. I like texting. Emotions!" DAD
Cas worries about Dean like a wife would with an alcoholic husband
Of all the things Dean could be MAD about at Metateon... the first thing he can think of is him stealing Cas' grace (31:33) (okay, maybe he is going in chronological order but STILL)
Episode 11:
[I AM SO SO SO SORRY BUT DEAN USED THE ALIAS "PRESLEY" (18:55) I AM NOT OKAY]
Episode 14:
Have this deleted scene: Castiel and Crowley bitching over Dean, and Crowley calling Dean Cas' boyfriend
This is some hell of a goodbye-eye-love-making scene (26:57)
Cain compares himself to Dean... and CAS TO HIS WIFE COLLETTE [PARALLELS]
"You're living my life in reverse [...]
First you'd kill Crowley. You'd get it done, no remorse. (Cain had been killing his descendants, for whom he didn't care much)
And then you'd kill the angel, Castiel. Now, that one... that, I suspect, would hurt something awful. [And than Sam is Able, bla bla...]"
AM I WRONG?! YOU'RE GONNA LOOK AT ME AND TELL ME THAT I'M WRONG??!!!
Dean gives the First Blade to Cas... oKAY (37:10)
Worried brother-in-laws (41:27)
Episode 16:
This is such a good source of hidden meanings scene! Dean starts his "confession" as a scam. Everything he says at first is to attract the spirit.
He starts talking about seeing lots of women, not being able to control himself, and being sick of it. Then the real confession begins...
Dean feels he's going to die soon, and fears not death itself, but what he would be missing from his life.
"There's things... people, feelings that I... I would experience differently than I had before. Or even for the first time." (25:28) and the priest believes Dean is talking about love.
Well... "people, feelings"... who could he be referring to? Does Dean want love all of a sudden? People he wants to experience for the first time... uhmmmm... Is Dean opening up to his attraction to MEN??!! Or one angel in particular?
ICWAW we would guess Dean was talking about Cas
"Who mixes their blood and bones into paint? No woman has ever done that for me." (39:19) UHM- Dean, what about
6x20 "He has bled, died bla bla bla for us",
7x21 "I'm always happy to bleed for the Winchesters" or
9x22 "You just gave up an entire army for one guy"
ICWAW we would ALL roll our eyes at this statement and scream CAS
THE GUY BLED, LOST HIS HOME, REBELLED, DIED FOR YOU!! HE REBUILT YOU PIECE BY PIECE FROM HELL- SAVED YOU DOZENS OF TIMES!!!
Episode 17:
About saving Dean from the Mark: "We won't- (free Metatron)" "Yes, you will... because you're desperate." (9:44) Hannah knows. Let's remark that
"All I'm getting from you is... colours." (14:26) bitch he is a walking đPRIDE FLAGđłïžâđ
Notice how, when we get a Sam-Cas centred episode, we don't get the same interactions with Dean-Cas? Why this?
Dean is always ready to call Cas a "brother", but the only one true bromance here is Sam and Cas'. There are no longing stares, no weird sexual filled dialogue nor tension, NO LONGING STARES
Facts, my people. Facts
Episode 18:
"You killed my friend." "Oh, pff, Dean is fine, mostly. Can't you get past that?" "Never." (12:39)
Charlie being excited about meeting Dean's famous boyfriend is WHOLESOME (37:34)
To have Cas back, 100%, safe and sound, is a win for Dean (38:58) and the face Cas makes after Dean hits him with another no-homo "It's good to have you back, pal." is "UHH not this again". Charlie already ships it
Episode 20:
A #MARRIED couple and their daughter. NO ARGUMENTS VALID (7:06)
Look at how they enter the motel (16:22)
OH MY GOOOOOD!!! #PARENTS coming back home from shopping!! THE HAND ON THE SHOULDER!!! Also
"Happy birthday. I got it at the Hot Topical" DAD
Dean: "Imma head back over there." Cas: "I'm coming with you." Claire: "I'm coming with you too." (17:24) #FAMILY
A fucking family comedy about a dad confronting the daughter's boyfriend and the other dad scolding him:
"What did you do to him?" "I didn't lay a hand on him!" "Dean, that isn't exactly true." "... Well, I didn't kill the guy." (17:14)
Surprisingly enough, this is not the first nor last time Dean acts like a dad to a lost child (AND TWO OF THESE TIMES THE KID IS SOMEHOW RELATED TO CAS) (21:54)
Episode 22:
C: "Claire, you are not going out there. [...] It's too dangerous. I can't let anything happen to you." D: "Claire, you're not going." C: "You're not either, Dean." D: "What?" (19:29)
#FAMILY DON'T TALK TO ME!
"No fighting. [...] Both of you." AAAAAA
This doesn't fucking matter, but Dean just said "... for the ladies. Or the fellas. I don't judge." (36:23)
Cas' speech to Dean... wow. "So if there's even a small chance that we can save you... I won't let you walk out of this room." (39:20)
I hate this scene. (40:11)
Dean is overwhelmed by Charlie's death, Sam and Cas' betrayal, the Mark changing him and all the other shit.
The Mark is taking over, and Dean can't (and won't) help it. Cas knows it. He doesn't want to hurt Dean. He is not even resisting. Doesn't put up a fight.
And just like Colette with Cain, Castiel only asks Dean one thing: "Stop." (40:38) [9x11]
Parallel to 8x07:
The only thing that stops Cas from killing Dean, is him begging, clutching onto his sleeve.
"Dean... please..." (41:08) Cas pleading Dean, clutching to his arm, makes him resist the urge to kill him.
Episode 23:
You can find gifs and the script of some deleted (destiel) scenes in this post by @charlie-minion
As the Mark eats Dean... he starts feeling guilt for the people he hurt... first on the list: Cas (14:54)
(This gif is not mine)
Well... what a season.

directors cut: oasis
[doing this entirely for myself, out of pure self indulgence lol] [this will be very messy/poorly organized and there will be spoilers]
okay so where to even begin omg..... we will start with the origins of oasis:
its actually, techinically a spin off of the world from this drabble with dino from svt. which the world in this drabble is what the world from oasis would look like very far in the future. but i changed a lot between writing that drabble and creating oasis. but there should be a scene in the drabble that is very similar to a part in oasis (hint: the first vision they got from saskila was not just a random vision with no meaning.......hehe)
but that drabble (its titled dreamscapes) was inspired by a mix of this post on tumblr about how nuclear waste warning signs sounded very cool and the book that i was reading called the children of blood and bone by tomi adeyemi
and then after i had made that drabble i saw deeâs (@/atbzkingdomâs) post about the time capsule collab, and i had a couple ideas of what i could do for it but i ultimately decided on what would eventually become oasis !! so i guess we really have dee and that collab to thank for this piece lol
now for the timeline of me writing:
so i started outlining this piece in the first couple days of january, and normally outlines take me a while to come up with just because i struggle in coming up with plot, but i knew that my spring semester of classes would be starting soon and that I didnât have a lot of time so i just sort of grinded an outline out as well several paragraphs of pure worldbuilding.Â
and then i started writing
and wow i was Really writing!! at my peak productivity i was easily getting down like 2k a day which for me is insane (for reference, i wrote 1k a day for tsiytt and i struggled my way through that)Â
but then life happens classes had begun and my writing for oasis slowly become nothing...Â
i really only found the time to work on the piece every other weekend, so i was really nervous that i wouldnât finish in time (which technically i didnât cause it was supposed to come out march 1st) but luckily i did
and at some point in february, i had lost so much of my momentum and motivation for this piece that i almost gave up on it. (at this point i was writing the scenes after they find the seat of wisdom destroyed) but again luckily i did not, but i personally can definitely see a decline in the quality of my writing towards the end (i mean maybe its in my head, but its sort of like i can see the loss of love for the wip in my writing at the end of it)
but donât misunderstand, i still love oasis!! and in all honesty, iâm already considering starting a second draft to it, which is way sooner than i thought i would lol
also when i started writing this piece, i began writing it in the order that it would be read, but then halfway i switched to writing chronologically
anyways, something i learned while writing this piece, is that writing is a marathon. whereas, even with my longer pieces, i always viewed writing as a sprint. so as i start venturing into original works and more lengthy pieces of writing, i think this was a very valuable lesson for me to have learned.
okay now to the good stuff lol: [the first word of the bullet about the next chapter (?) is bolded for some crumbs of an organized commentary]
so this is jumping to the first past bit... but when i first wrote farah i had a very different plan for her character than who she ended up being. i had imagined that sheâd be a lot more cold and a tough love sort of person. so thatâs who i was writing when sheâs first introduced in the flashback, but she very quickly become a much kinder full of love sort of person. but anyways i mention this because whenever i read that first part and the introduction of her character, iâm always a bit taken aback by how like mean here character is to crown then lol
also zoar !!!! its a terrible place, but i love that underground city
i also wrote the first flashback after i had written the scene where crown and chanhee are talking at his place in andhor, so the whole âfearlessâ connection was done very purposefully here since i knew how itâd be referenced in the next scene. someone mentioned this small connection in their reblog but i cant remember whoÂ
also rashi is my favorite character xD
i personally think how crown and chanhee became friends (the running thing) is so cuteÂ
this first bit of conversation between crown and chanhee when it switches back to the present and chanhee is giving them a tour of andhor is actually quite important to me, in the sense that its the first glimpse of how their actual relationship works and how they act together and just like their dynamic despite the fact that they havent seen each other in so longÂ
and yeah i think kyu mentioned this and a few others, but i love how awkward it is when chanhee and crown are in his home in andhor, cause one: they havent seen each other in years! but also: anyone else find going to someoneâs place for the first time oddly intimate, like wow youâre opening up your home to me and now suddenly idk how to sit or stand or what to do with my arms... maybe just me LMAO
DUDE i struggled so hard with making it so that chanhee knew how impossible this whole mission was going to be without actually revealing that he knows about the mirror. it was so hard for me, hopefully it came out alright though. if anyone is reading this, did the twist(s) come as a shock to you? did you see it coming? or did it feel like it came out of absolutely no where and not in a good way?
yes i did name the desert after the department store kohls .....
i was so excited to explain all the mage types, i had so much fun writing this whole chapterÂ
fun fact: there was originally another sub group of psyche mages called dream mages who had like powers with dreams and stuff, but it ended up being irrelevant and really underdeveloped so it took it out
if anyone else was raised catholic or is catholic then iâd hope you recognize the names of all the relics.... i stole them from a prayer in the rosary whoops
it took me very long time to figure out exactly how the whole soul for the relic business would work, and idk if im a 100% satisfied with what it is/how it works/how it plays into rashi giving chanhee the locket
the note new gives crown.... the first slice of their friendship blooming, bro i eat that shit upÂ
this part where crown and rashi are talking after the lesson is actually one of my favorites. (like i said i love rashi, but i just really love her interreacting with crown, i think they have such an interesting dynamic and one that iâve seen irl a lot between students and teachers, where the student adores the teacher... iâll get more into this later) but moving on, i like it for a number of reasons. one: itâs the first time we as readers get to see rashi talk outside of her role as lesson master. two: i love crown getting this validation from rashi. itâs not really expanded on a lot, but crownâs magic is definitely a bit of an insecurity for them, in the way that they donât feel like it belongs to them. but here rashi comes, this person that crown looks up to so much, and telling crown that theyâre a bit similar when it comes to having magic. and surprising crown by comforting them. and... idk i just really love this moment for crown.
okay this line: âYou call your mom Rashi?â is a lowkey reference to game plan,, if anyone knows what iâm talking about then please come clown me for nearly having the entire movie memorizedÂ
oh, i also find the capital really cool. in my head the capital was always one huge building that contains an entire city but i realized while editing that i never really explained that, so idk if i successfully described the capital as cool as it is to meÂ
also the five friends part.....CUTE
when chanhee says âi know. i remember.â !!! girl i felt that line with my entire chest. idk why
okay wait this part:Â âBut that knowledge seems to fall flat right now. Because despite everything, curiosity won the war.â i love it so much, its that tiny of sliver of hope that gets me personally
i think this part where crownâs pride is so hurt by no one telling them about chanheeâs healing magic is quite important because its a glimpse of how stubborn and prideful and headstrong of a character they can beÂ
also this : â âand do you believe everything rashi saysâ / without hesitation, you answer, âyes, of courseâ â this is another example of how highly crown thinks of rashi while growing up, almost to a fault. to the point where crown thought rashi could do no wrong. which i think is so interesting to think about when contrasted with the fight crown and chanhee have in the jungle where crown is the one discussing how rashi was wrong. i just like how much growth crown has had between all these years. and their opinion / perspective on rashi is one of the largest indicators of that growth.Â
I also just really like that paragraph where shadow vs healing is explained... I think chanheeâs magic is so sick
oh also the names thing.... I canât remember where I got the idea to do that from but im so glad I did. its one of my favorite aspects to this world, and it looks like a lot of other people enjoyed it as well. but apart from the intimacy of it, i love how the use of names affects oneâs magic. and that paragraph where they go through all that a mage could do with a name. it gives me chills. just cause.... the possibilities
so many people have mentioned this line.... but I must too, so this part: âmagic always comes with a price. this is newâsâ ..... crazy
saskila scares me omg
again the first vision they see is not a random scene.... the easter eggs I planted with that mwahaha
yeah that scene where theyâre outside the tent discussing who should give their name to saskila..... I love that scene chanheeâs âI donât have anyone but youâ and crown deflecting all that tension with the pinky promise and the saskila calling them lovers.... mwah
this random scene about the hot summer and laying with Farah and new in the gardens is another one of my favorite, itâs just so sweet
but this next scene makes me so sad
like I know what happens and I know that everything turns out okay but I get so scared for crown
yeah just that entire part after Rashi gets to them and when theyâre going to the infirmary and before crown passes out... I love that whole part. i think i did an effective job of writing the gravity of that whole moment. cause it makes me a little stunned every time I read it. and I was pretty nervous about not being able to do that scene and that moment justice so Iâm glad it turned out like it did
and again this line: magic always comes with a price, and in your case, it comes with several.
okay this part after they jump out of the ship and crown is talking to Chanhee but that other dude is talking too... I hope itâs not too confusing. I really wanted to show through the writing that this was all happening at the same time, but idk it came out well. like in my mind I have such a clear picture of this scene, but I have no clue if I did effective job of showing you guys what Iâm seeing through the writing
oh yeah, crowns thing about dual wielding and engulfing the blades in flames.... I find that so cool. theyâre so sick for that
yeah also the part where crowns hurt and they give Chanhee their name and they use it.... great moment, but I feel like my writing is a bit lacking here. i just know it could be better.
I think at this point of writing my classes had started, and again the disparity in writing quality is so obvious to meÂ
but the line where chanhee is describing how it all feels, and it says âchanhee feels goldenâ was inspired by daylight by taylor swift, theres a line in that song that goes âi used to think love would be burning red, but its goldenâ and like hello the parallels between that and crownâs fire magic.... something to think aboutÂ
so this next part where itâs back to the past and crown is getting in trouble (as crown does) but the part where crown is like asking but not directly asking for rashiâs name.... that part is so crazy to me cause itâs feels so out of place. but it was purposeful. i was trying to show that crownâs growing and that theyâre at this weird age where they feel invincible. and also i wanted to put more emphasis on how being royal and the heir to the throne kind of effects the relationships crown has
and the last line of this part when rashi says ânever abuse itâ it gives me chills whew
the next part ... another part that i had high hopes for in the outlining stages of writing, but when it came to actually writing, this scene totally flopped, iâm gonna try not to dwell on this part too much cause i just know most of my comments will be about how much i donât like it. but just overall, this scene could have been SO MUCH BETTER !
omg this little interaction:Â ââLook!â Chanhee deadpans, shooting you a glare. âThe match is about to begin.â /Â âWish me luck.â /Â âI hope you lose.ââ i think its so funny and cute
â Your eyes immediately got to Rashi â another example of how highly crown regards rashiÂ
âIn Wurltan.â hmmmmmm sus.... *laughs in i love mentioning things that wonât make sense to reader until later*
okay this: âYes, but not just any mage. IâŠâ your voice trails off, pulling at your fingers and looking anywhere but at him. âI wanted you to know.â i cannot stand these two omgÂ
okay this part:Â âChanhee thinks and overthinks the words spoken between you both. His mind drifts off to last night as well, that moment in the tent where you shared your warmth. He doesnât even realize heâs staring at you until you give him a funny look. He quickly looks away and wonders if youâre overthinking everything as relentlessly as he is.â this part makes me think about what ina said about how chanhee shows his love by keeping you in his thoughts and YEAH chanheeâs love language in this piece is thinking about you and staring LOL
i hate this next part, not cause i donât like it or anything it just makes me sadÂ
but this line:Â âLike if someone shoved you from behind right now, you wouldnât push back; youâd let yourself fall straight to the ground.â i actually love that line
also this next entire bit i see SO clearly in mind, i hope i wrote it well enough so that you all saw it clearly too
when chanhee wipes the dirt.... girl iâm wiping my tearsÂ
this line :Â âWeâll lean on each other.â mini love declaration sighhhhhh
yeah that whole part i love so muchÂ
the seat of wisdom :(((( no!!!!!
so about this line:Â âHe stares at his palms, at all the lies buried under each nail and at all the secrets shoved in every crack. He watches as they all blow up in front of his face.â >> i had like ten different versions of it before i settled on this one lol
okay so the first part of the last past flashback with crown realizing their true feelings... so softÂ
news gone, rashisâs dead, :((( it makes me so sad
gosh okay this paragraph..... âIâve always wondered why the gods blessed me and you the way that they have. They entrusted you with such great power. The only person to be both a healing and shadow mage in centuries. And then,â a tear falls from her eye, âthey entrusted you to me.â Chanhee thinks this might be the first time heâs seen Rashi cry. âBut now I have reason to believe that this was no accident. Iâm beginning to think that the gods have always known it would come to this. And Iâm starting,â she falters there, âIâm starting to spite them for it.â  it hurts so bad im sorryÂ
the first confrontation with harlan took me so long to write, and iâm still not sure if i actually like it, so again i will refrain from commenting lol
but the part where crown screams : âYOU LOST THE MIRROR OF JUSTICE!â  I think i told kyu this but this line makes me laugh because in my head its said the same way bella says: âyou nicknamed my daughter after the lochness monsterâ whenever i see that line i smile lol
honestly this argument scene..... one of my absolute faves,,, everything lina said about it in that reblog just yes!yes!yes!! i canât even comment about a particular part because all of it i love so much. its another part that leaves me slightly speechless.
but my favorite part of it might be how it ends hehe
these next couple parts were a bit diffucult to write because obviously the air between crown and chanhee is not very light right now so it was just hard to navigate their dynamic at these moments until they apologize but hopefully it turned out alright
i really like this line: âBut this momentâwith the scent of Harlanâs wine under his nose and the chill of Harlanâs blade against his neckâthis moment feels nothing like those. It feels empty.âÂ
â Chanhee just stares at you.â -- staring as a love language exhibit bÂ
this whole part... chills broÂ
âChanhee exhales because for the first time since this afternoon he looks at your face and sees you.â -- exhibit c ....
okay wait another one of my favorite parts here: the spilled glass metaphor!! again please reference linaâs rb on this because everything said there... could not have said better myself. inspired by this writing advice by ocean vuong and yeah i just think the metaphor speaks for itself, one of my favorite lines (well paragraph) from the entire piece, actually from ALL of my worksÂ
it was so hard to think up all of yumiâs different names, i was struggling
them talking about how farah will be happy to see chanhee...... how do i break it to you crown.....sheâs dead...... awkward
red streak q! yesss. also iâm so sorry for killing off farahÂ
also kyunyu bestiessss
tbh this whole paragraph:Â âI get this overwhelming burst of honesty. As if what you both speak of is more than just a simple truth, as if itâs a commandant you blindly follow. Whatâs even odder is that I only feel that burst when you speak of each other.â Q stops walking and turns so that he faces Chanhee directly. âYou speak of Crown constantly. And last night, when I met Crown, your title never left from the tip of their tongue. Humans are so simple really. We mention what we love.â Q pauses for a moment, bringing a hand under his chin. âDo you love Crown?â --i wrote it for myself no regrets
oh wait this bit too :Â âQuietly, Chanhee says, âI know.â / âHave you been watching?â / âIâve been waiting.â / âFor what?â / He meets your eyes. âFor you.ââ -- sometimes i do things that live rent free in my own mind
okay im so sorry for just quoting myself but this too :Â â He sits back slightly. Shocked. Not by his love for you, but rather by how easily love walked into his heart and settled between his lungs â
lol the part where they try fooling q... why are crown and chanhee like this
the running !!!
yeah also every part after that... tears okay
yumiâs magic !!! its so cool to me, i love it so muchÂ
i surprisingly donât have much to say about the end... i mean i like it, but i just donât have any comments. the last line tho... good one shawna
okay im done for you sake i hope no one read this lmaoÂ
#oasis#mine#not sure what else to tag this lol#oh#directors commentary#this got so long for no reason

Tips for people who like to write by hand
So youâre an old timey writer who enjoys the feeling of paper as you breathe life into a story? Or, like me, you canât use your phone at school and just wants to get some writing done while math class bores the others?Â
Well, me too and Iâve come to your aid! Iâve done some pretty stupid things that costed me hours and hours of searching for lost scenes and struggling to find ideas I knew Iâd written down so you donât have to!Â
Find the right notebook for you
By experience, notebooks take a long time to be filled. In good nanowrimo times, I take from 6 to 8 months to finish one. So youâll be stuck with this guy for a long time. Make sure to pick one that you like and is right for your needs. I, for example, prefer spiral notebooks. You can rip out pages if you need to (if you mess it up, if someone asks you for one, if you just need a page to write down a grocery list or something, etc) and you can put a pen on the spiral. I also like having a pocket to put pieces of ideas I have.Â
Some spooky stories about having the wrong notebook:Â
I got stuck with a brochure old planner for two years. My mom didnât use it in the year it was meant for, so I thought oh, itâs free real estate. As it turns out, it had really small space between the lines, so the pages would take forever to fill, it had all those day and hour numbers and the paper was really thin. It was terrible and it made writing terrible. It would have been a thousand times better if I just spent a few bucks on a regular notebook.Â
More recently, I started using just the kind of notebook I like, a spiral notebook with a pocket. But I bought it a couple of years ago at a fandom event I attended and the cover was a personalized Divergent cover. At the time, I thought if was pretty cool and everyone would know the reference. But now it has aged so very poorly. The cover has blood all over it and it says âFaction Before Bloodâ. So now Iâm scared to pull it out to write at uni and people will think Iâm in a gang or something.Â
Number your pages
I know, it sounds like a lot of work. But you can get a notebook with pages already numbered, number it yourself or do it like I do and number it every 10 pages (just because itâs easier). If you donât feel like doing all of this repetitive work, date your writing. Itâs cool to see how much you progressed, how long you have been writing this project, when you had this idea, etc. One thing doesnât have to exclude the other, but both methods serve the same purpose.Â
And this purpose is to help you get an idea of how much you write (and feel good about your progress) and to help you organize yourself on all youâve been writing. Which takes us to the next tip.Â
Make the first page an index
Not only it will take the pressure off the first page, it will also help you so you donât keep losing the awesome stuff youâre writing and forgetting it exists. Everytime you start a new scene or change projects, go to the index and write down the page or the date you started this new section. Since I number every ten pages, I find the first page with a number on it and start counting forward or back to the new page. But you can do it in any way that suits you.Â
Make a random idea pageÂ
It doesnât have to be the second page (it usually isnât for me), but itâs good to have one. Sometimes, in the middle of writing, you have that great idea for something you need to change on what youâve already got, or you got a completely new insight. Itâs good to have your idea page somewhere close you can just flip to, write it down and get right back to writing. And donât go easy on that page! Write it diagonally, vertically, draw on it, anything. Itâs just there to take out those ideas so you can take a look at it another time and not mess the flow youâre in right now.Â
Keep your enemies close. And your pen even closer!
You know your favorite bic friend? It has a secret weapon just for you to use. That little flap of the cap? Use it to keep your pen always close. I normally put it on the spiral of my notebook. But if you have a brochure, you can put it on the cover. Sometimes it damages it a bit, but itâs a good trade for having it always ready for action. If you use moleskine, I saw that they normally have designated pen places. If they donât, I have a tip for it just under this one!Â
Take your time to find which kind of pen is your weapon of choice. Personally, I think nothing beats a black ballpoint pen. I know some people like fineliners for writing, but they make the other side of the paper all gross looking and I like to keep it clean. Plus, I write really small and fineliners often bleed in my handwriting. I took my time searching for my favorite brand and I settled on Molin ballpoint pens.Â
I would recommend buying your favorite pens in bulk. Nothing is worse than pen hunting around when you have an urgent idea. I bought 50 pens for super cheap and I stack them EVERYWHERE. In all my bags, in my sketchbooks, in my bullet journal, in my writing notebook, in my drawers, anywhere I think it will be easy to find one when I need it ( also giving some to my friends who keep stealing my pens).
Crafting the perfect notebook
You donât have to be a crafter to modify your notebook to better suit you! Find a ribbon anywhere in the house. Cut it to be a little longer than the book. Tape that bad boy to the inside of the back cover and everytime you stop writing, put that ribbon on the page you stopped. This helps you not to get lost in your previous writing and get right back to business when you resume.
Also, if you really like that moleskine vibe but donât have the cash, just get a regular clothing elastic, make cut it just the size of the notebook and glue both ends to the inner part of the back cover. There you go! Now you can close it (and keep it closed). Â
If you like post-its, you can take half of the block (or however many sheets you cant put in there and still close the notebook comfortably) and glue it to the inside part of the cover of your notebook so it will always be conveniently available for you.
If your notebook doesnât have a place to put your pen on and you really donât want to mess up the cover, you take a small elastic (smaller than the pen) and tape (or preferably glue it) it to the back part of the notebook with both ends inside. There! Ready for the trip! Speaking of which...
Always carry your notebook with you
You never know when inspiration is going to strike. In class. At the bank. In a mall. Whenever you have a little time, you can write something. Or just take a look at what youâve done and feel good about it.Â
Not in the mood for writing? Edit. Reread what youâve done and start finding what you want to change once you type it in. When doing this, donât be scared to cross out entire sentences and rewriting them on top. If it starts getting too messy, go to a blank page and rewrite the scene and you think it should have been done the first time. It seems counter-intuitive in a copy+paste kind of age, but I assure you it is worth it.
Typing your work
This is one of the biggest reasons I love writing in pen and paper. When you type, your first round of editing is done!Â
Donât zone out when typing. As I said, typing is your first round of editing. It is important to keep aware of all of the things you might have done wrong when writing. Some people say writing it on paper and then typing it is a waste of time. I say it saves time and lives.Â
Keep it loose!
Just because you are writing in an actual physical book, it doesnât mean you are writing a actual physical book. This is still your notebook and these are still your notes. So donât be afraid to get messy. Write things out of order (seriously, itâs okay to not go chronological. i know itâs hard). Outline. Sketch. Tip-ex the whole thing. Get post-its on it. Take notes. Make genealogical trees. Draw maps.Â
If youâre feeling down or uninspired, try very basic writing exercises: write what you see, what you feel, something to try and make you laugh or something to make someone cry. Itâs your place to express yourself. And once you got those creative juices flowing, happy writing :)
I hope you enjoyed my tips and please, feel free to reblog this with your own tips and tricks. Iâd love to hear them! And follow me for some more writing content!Â

Alright, Jake caught me up on the basics of what happened. With that in mind, Iâm going to go through the actual letters in chronological order, and hopefully some of the gaps will be filled in for me. I also remember a tiny bit of what happened while I was out, which might help you all too. This might be a little long, a LOT happened in the one day I was gone XD
Lis, it seems like youâre more able to take things in stride now. Thatâs good, but keep in mind that we are all still in danger. Please donât get complacent.
Yeah, Goldie seemed sorta drained. Then again, freezing an entire world for hell knows how long has got to be exhausting even for an entity, right? Interesting that either Goldie or someone else chose to just shove knowledge into your head rather than send the letters, though. More time efficient, maybe? Or maybe they couldnât send you the letters for one reason or another. Anyhow, itâs good you didnât get that letter where Flower introduced herself. That freaked me out and I never even got it.
I hope there wonât be any more Yuvons too, but Iâm not gonna get my hopes up. Still, if there are more, and Black Ink decides to keep this same format, thereâs a chance we might be able to start the game with an advantage. ...Assuming there are more.
Back to the red text, though. Seems like a new entity to me. I donât know why I can see it and JAKE canât, though. It didnât really say that much. Seemed more inclined to tease and taunt than actually say anything of interest, though I could actually hear laughing when it said âas you wishâ. ...Given just the one other thing it said, plus the possible Princess Bride reference, Red Ink might have something to do with romance/love? Too small a sample size to be sure, though.
Seems like the magnet did indeed send! :) So Flower probably isnât exactly a part of the sending process. Thatâs something, at least.
âSubstitute sleepâ fucking hell Jake why are you like this
Hiya, Stalker, sorry about Jake :( I tried to ask him to be a little more polite, but I donât control him and he and I disagree a lot when it comes to you. At least you donât seem to have been offended, so thatâs something.
Iâm going to guess you sent that letter after the broadcast, Lis :/ Iâll get back to that later.
Annnd this second letter would be after Sweetly Sleeping (we so need to come up with a nickname for them) contacted everyone. I donât really have much to comment on. This is all good stuff to know, though. Interesting that Sweetly Sleeping was limited in what they could say.
Aww, thanks Stalker :)
In any case. Who âkilledâ Sweetly Sleeping? Maybe Black Ink? That would explain a bit.
I just saw a new letter appear, sorry, Iâm gonna finish this one first. Where was I?
Right. Well, the amnesia probably at least had SOMETHING to do with being shards. After my âfunâ little dream... okay, Iâm gonna save all the details about my side of things for the end, just so I can keep my head straight.
âPaper rotting from the outside in.â Paper, okay, makes sense. I mean, with the letters and all. Rotting, interesting wording. Metaphorical or literal? Or both? Iâd be inclined to assume a metaphor, but who the fuck even knows with entities.
âFrom the outside in.â Thatâs the part thatâs really interesting to me. Thereâs SO many implications there but this is already hella long and I have a bunch more letters to get through. Iâll come back to it in another letter, I think.
Yes. I gave Sweetly Sleeping power, sort of. Itâs complicated. And, yeah, they used to be human, but I donât necessarily think they were a normal human, per se. Not that it really seems to help them much in their current state :/Â Â I definitely feel a lot of empathy for them, now. And Iâll make sure to not take deals, donât worry.
Jake... yeah, their descriptionâs a pretty good one, though Iâve got an analogy that might help yâall imagine it later. As for their advice... doesnât that sort of... sound like it comes from experience? :/ Poor them.
Hope Skie didnât tear into you too much, Rai XD
...So the shattering wasnât the only reason they had amnesia. Probably their death had a lot to do with it too. In their letter, they also sorta seemed... lonely, I guess? Just, the part where they thanked you for speaking to them. I can empathize.
Anyhow. Lis. Sorry about your phone. And oh hells, I feel so bad for you. I get HORRIBLE motion sickness :( At least you managed to sleep well regardless.
Iâm perfectly fine :) And Iâm also fairly happy Sweetly Sleeping might be able to come back sometime. They seem... I donât know. I donât know how to describe them. Iâll leave it at âa valuable allyâ for now.
By the way, Lis. Both our Jakes are going to be upset at me for saying this, but Iâm completely sure of it by now, and youâre, 1., the person most affected by this, and 2., not a damn child. 3., this is the type of thing Iâd get massively pissed off if it was kept from me unless the others had a damned good reason. I donât think they do.
There seems to be another entity attaching itself to you, one who likes silver and writing in cursive, at least presuming there arenât two of them. They very much seem benevolent to me, and are probably at least part of the reason youâve been happier recently.
There. Done. Commence the yelling at me, Jakes.
Skie, thanks for the idea XDÂ Â (Of course Iâm not going to do it, but we gotta keep our Jakes on their toes)
Well... like I said. Maybe Black Ink DID do something about Sweetly Sleeping. Maybe it killed them.
Thatâs an interesting hint. Youâre right about how the myth tells it, but Iâm not sure we should take the mythâs answer as necessarily the answer to the question. But I think thatâs a topic for another letter.
Like Jake said. Itâs possible the cipher weakness is somewhat exclusive to Black Ink. Which would support a hypothesis I had a while back. And all that about Rai is really disturbing. Definitely keep an eye on him please.
Okay. Now, letâs get into what happened with me. Since it was all, technically, a dream, there are parts that are fuzzy and Iâm probably forgetting a lot of stuff. First off, though, you all should know that I was in REM sleep for literally hours on end. Like, from the time Jake woke up to some time before Sweetly Sleeping sent the letter telling everyone they were going to sleep. Jake didnât think anything of it, but I know a little about sleep cycles and thatâs ten types of not natural.
Not the most surprising thing in the world, but notable.
When I became conscious, inside my dream, I was splintered the way they described, but... more pieces, I think. It was like looking through a kaleidoscope, if the little colored bits of glass were ALSO you. Anytime the âkaleidoscopeâ was shifted, even slightly, everything would tumble around all over each other and I was looking a million directions at once.
Through sheer luck and random fumbling, I managed to say... something. Iâm not sure what, I donât remember, but I was completely terrified, and there were things already there to reach out to, so I did. I could... sort of hear what people responded with. A little. But it was all overlapped over each other, I missed a lot of it. I think someone asked if I was possessed, which, um, probably fair? I donât know, I donât even remember what I said. Did any of what I said sound important, anyone?
Anyhow, I knew jack all about what I was trying to do, so that dropped pretty fast. I felt something else, and I pulled at it, and then I passed out.
Yes, I passed out in a fucking dream. Thatâs a new one for me.
While Sweetly Sleeping was talking to the rest of you, a shard woke me up and we started talking. They didnât remember much of anything, but they were nice. They helped me be in one piece again. Initially, I think they accidentally took from me, but then I gave them a little more so they could stay and help later. I canât remember what we actually talked about, but there are... some impressions left over.
Iâll leave it at we should probably be happy they have a fairly firm moral compass and a human mind.
Anyhow, not much of note happened after that. I was exhausted and sort of listless after giving them what I could, and they recalled their shard to their main body they were making. So I just sort of... floated in space. I think it was space, at least. Then, next thing I knew, I was waking up for real this morning.
So. Yeah. Thatâs my story.
Right, time for letter number two. Talk to ya soon :)

I want to express an unpopular opinion. I hope for your understanding, because such things don't like to listen. Why does everyone think that Hawks is a bird? I couldn' fit my logical arguments into the askbox :( (about how he sits on a pole "like a bird", supposedly likes jewelry and so on). Even his quirk is called Fierce Wings, not a Hawk, not a Red Bird. Do you remember the names of the quirks of Hound Dog and Tsuyu-chan? We haven't evidence to believe that Hawks is behaves like a bird.
I do believe very much heâs a bird, and if you would let me friend, I would love to try and prove it to you because I think the evidence is overwhelming. Iâll make a TL;DR at the end but Iâd really like to take the opportunity to perhaps teach others at least one method for literary analysis since it can be a really dry and boring subject to learn in school but is SO useful not only for getting good grades but getting into colleges as well as interpreting both entertainment and genuinely important information like the news, history, laws, and scientific papers. Using fiction - especially such a rich, engaging one like HeroAca - is a great way to try it out without the pressure of a grade. I donât have the qualifications to teach in any formal capacity, but as a âpeerâ tutor I hope I can be helpful.
Iâm going to put everything under the cut from here because this is going to get LONG, but I promise the TL;DR at the end will be very easy to read. If you liked this sort of unofficial tutorial please let me know. Iâd love to help make âacademicâ skills like this more accessible for those who might benefit from it and enjoy it, but it doesnât make sense to put in all that effort moving forward if Iâm garbage at it.
Before we get too into things, I want to lay out a few notes to keep in mind as we go.
I will only be using the official translations from Vizâs Shonen Jump website when available. Fan translations are more than close enough to casually enjoy and follow the story, but professional translators are paid to know and get various nuances correct and some of the trickier cultural background behind certain phrases (for example, the phrase âwhere the rubber meets the roadâ might make zero sense in a foreign language if translated literally, so an equal cultural phrase should be used instead) that give more exact information. Rarely is this too important, but sometimes it helps, plus it supports the source material.
If youâve followed my blog for a while you might know Iâm very fond of doing this kind of thing in my spare time and that Iâm a huge fan of YouTube channels like Game/Film Theory, Overly Sarcastic Productions, Extra Credits, and Wisecrack that do this kind of thing with popular media as well. If you like this sort of content, may I encourage you to check them out after this to see how else you can apply these kinds of analytical skills to things that arenât homework.
My writing style tends to meander, but I do my best to cut out the fat and only include relevant information so even though thereâs a lot of information here, please know that Iâm trying to be thorough and explain things to the best of my ability. If I seem to go off on a tangent, Iâm trying to set up or contextualize information to explain why itâs relevant and then come back to the point. In other words, please be patient and bear with me as I go.
Now, to start, I want to explain at least my method for analyzing a text/piece of media. There is a set order and number of steps to take, and itâs as follows:
Read the material all the way through.
Come up with a hypothesis about something youâve noticed when reading it. (In this case, itâs âIs Hawks actually supposed to be a bird?â)
Collect as much relevant information as possible and test the evidence to see if it supports the hypothesis weâve made.
Step back and look at everything again with those points in mind.
Determine if we were right or wrong with the evidence we have.
If we were wrong, go back to step 3 to figure out what fell apart and see if we need to go back to step 2.
If that sequence sounds familiar itâs because itâs the scientific method! Aha, didnât think weâd be pulling science into all this, did you? Donât worry, we wonât be putting numbers or formulas anywhere near this discussion - the scientific method is just a way we can observe something and test if what we thought about it is actually true; and it applies to almost everything we as humans can observe - from the laws of the universe, to arts and crafts, to philosophy and religion, and so on! When you think about it that way, whole new possibilities can open up for you when it comes to understanding how the world works.
So with that set letâs (finally) begin!
Steps 1 and 2 are already done. Weâve read the manga and want to prove that Hawks is a bird. (Weâre going to try and prove he IS a bird because in the context of the series thereâs a lot that *isnât* a bird and less stuff that *is* which will make our job easier.) So now, weâre onto:Â
Step 3 - collect data and see what conclusions we can get just from our evidence.
Now, to pause again (I know, bear with me!) thereâs a few different kinds of information and considerations we have to keep in mind as we collect. There are four kinds of information that are important to know about in order to determine if itâs good data that will help us with the testing phase in Step 4. The kinds of information to keep in mind are:
Explicit information - this is information that is directly spelled out for us. For example, Hawks says, âI like my coffee sweet.â and his character sheet says âHawkâs favorite food is chicken.â Thatâs all there is to it, and itâs pretty hard to argue with. This is the easiest type of info to find.
Implicit information - this is info that isnât directly spelled out but is noticeable either in the background or as actions, patterns, or behaviors that can be observed. For example, Hawks has mentioned in at least three very different places his concerns over people getting hurt while he tries to get in with the League:
Chapter 191 when confronting Dabi about the Nomu he says, âYou said youâd release it in the factory on the coast, not in the middle of the damn city!â
Chapter 191 again in a flashback with the Hero Commission he asks, âWhat about the people who might be hurt while Iâm infiltrating the League?â
Chapter 240 when discovering how much influence and power the League has gained, âIf someone had taken down the League sooner, all those good citizens wouldnât have had to die!â
Hawks never says in so many words, âI never want innocent people to get hurt under any circumstances!â but the pattern of behavior and concern is consistent enough to form a pattern and clue us in that this is a key part of his character to keep in mind.
Peripheral information - this is information that isnât directly to do with Hawks or maybe even the series as a whole but is still relevant to keep in mind for his character and the questions weâre asking. This may include extra content that isnât the âseriesâ proper, but is still an official source like interviews with Horikoshi, etc. but it can go even further. For example, while we try to prove that heâs a bird, we should have some knowledge about what makes a bird a bird, some specific and notable birdlike habits/behaviors/features, etc. This is just to show how wide-ranging we need to cast our informational net.
Contextual information - this will be important when we get to Step 4, but itâs good to keep in mind now. This is when we compare evidence against the broader scope of the series and consider the circumstances under which we find the information. For example, if I told you, âHarry kicked a dog.â you might think âWhat a jerk! What decent person kicks a dog?â; but if I said, âHarry kicked a dog while trying to keep it from biting his kid.â suddenly it re-frames the story. âIs the kid ok? Why was that dog attacking? Harry put himself in danger to keep his kid safe - what a great dad!â
Iâll go chronologically to make it easier to follow my evidence as I gather and give references as to where I found that information. Iâll go through the manga first, and then any peripheral sources that are either direct informational companions to the series (like character books or bonus character information sheets) and interviews with Horikoshi. Please note the categories these details fall into may vary based on opinion/interpretation, but I did my best to list them out for reference.
Chapter 185 - Explicit Type: Feathered wings - regardless of the specifics of his quirk itâs undeniable his wings are made up of feathers which is a distinctly birdlike quality. There are many mythical creatures and even dinosaurs that also have feathered wings, but this is our first big piece of evidence.
Chapter 186 - Peripheral Type: Large appetite - birds have an incredibly fast metabolism because flying takes so much energy. Theyâre constantly eating. Plenty of young men are big eaters, but it was specifically pointed out and works towards our hypothesis so weâll keep it in our back pocket for now.
Chapter 186 - Implicit/Peripheral Type: Fantastic vision - Hawks senses the Nomu coming before the audience even is able to make out whatâs headed their way. It could be implied his wings caught it first, which might be the case, but he looks directly at the Nomu and brings Endeavorâs attention to it. Birds have fantastic long-range vision, especially birds of prey that mainly swoop in from high in the air to ambush highly perceptive prey. Also good to add to the pile.
Chapter 192 + Volume 20 Cover - Implicit/Peripheral type: Wears jewelry and bright colors - birds are well documented to be drawn to bright colors and are known for decorating their nests with trinkets. Scientists actually have to be careful when tagging birds with tracking bracelets because they can accidentally make him VASTLY more popular with the ladies by giving him a brightly colored band to the point they canât resist him! Male birds are also known for having bright, colorful displays for attracting and wooing mates. While Hawks isnât the only male character to wear jewelry in the series, heâs the only one (to my recollection) that wears as MUCH jewelry so often both during and outside of work. It may not be obvious, but the illustration on Volume 20 is actually an advertisement for his line of (presumably) luxury jewelry. In other words, Hawks on some level is synonymous with style and flair to the point he can make money by selling jewelry with his name on it.
Chapter 20 Volume Cover - Explicit Type: Hawk emblem on the watch face - If the name âHawksâ didnât give it away, heâs very clearly trying to align himself with more avian qualities if his merch has bird motifs. In other words Hawk = âHero Hawksâ and âHero Hawksâ = bird.
Chapter 192, 244, clear file illustration - Peripheral Type: birdlike posture. Chapter 244 isnât quite released yet on the official site as of writing this, but when Hawks swoops in and beats the kids to the punch apprehending the criminals trying to subdue Endeavor, his hands are clenched in a very talon-like manner similar to a swooping eagle. When walking with Endeavor in 192, he holds his resting hand in a similar fashion. On the clear file illustration heâs not only perched on his tippy toes in a pose that has been famously called âowlingâ (remember that trend/meme, yâall?) but his wings are slightly outstretched to catch the breeze to keep from falling over which a lot of birds can be seen doing when they donât have great purchase on a surface in a place thatâs a little windy. The fact that he seems to gravitate to high places like birds are often seen doing might also be a noteworthy indication.
Extra sources:
Hawks Shifuku: Horikoshi describes Hawks as a âbird personâ and says that his initial design was based off of Takahiro from his old manga.Â
Takahiroâs design:
Current character design: The banner image on my blog was commissioned from a friend of mine who doesnât follow the series. When I showed her reference images of Hawks, you know what she said? âOh! His hair is feathers!â Even his eyebrows have that fluffy/scruffy texture to them that his hair has. The markings on his eyes can also be seen on him as a young child in Chapter 191 which means it isnât makeup meant to tie in a theme or look. He has those dark, pointed eye markings like many birds do. So on some genetic level he resembles a bird.
Step 4: Testing our hypothesis with the gathered evidence.
Thereâs already a lot of compelling evidence that already closely aligns him to birds which is promising. However, to really prove our point we should try to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt he is a bird. To do that this time around Iâm going to see how the series treats people with animal-based quirks and see if itâs consistent with the way Hawks is portrayed.
You bring up Hound Dog and Tsuyu, and theyâre fantastic examples. Letâs start with Hound.
Heâs pretty straight forward - heâs like a dog. He has a dog face, has dog-like tendencies, and dog-like abilities. Superpower: dog.
And in Tsuyuâs case - quirk: frog, just frog. Sheâs stated explicitly to have frog-like features, frog-like tendencies, have frog-like abilities, and even comes from a âfroggy family.â
So with these two very explicitly animal-like characters the common theme seems to be âIf theyâre considered to be like a specific animal, they have to physically resemble that animal, act like that animal at times, and have abilities like that animal.â Letâs see if another animal-quirk character matches up and then put Hawks to the test.
Spinnerâs quirk is Gecko. Based on our criteria, is he a gecko?
Does he look like a gecko, even vaguely?Â
Yes, heâs covered head to toe in scales, and his face is very lizard-like.
Does he occasionally act like a gecko?Â
Unclear. We havenât really seen any evidence of this, but that doesnât mean he doesnât. For the sake of our argument, weâll just say no and move on.
Does he have gecko-like abilities?
Yes! Though most of his abilities are limited to things like being able to stick to walls, itâs still gecko-like in origin and qualifies.
Spinner hits clearly hits â
criteria and our standards seem pretty consistent, so letâs see how Hawks stands up.
Does he look like a bird?Â
Not all of his features may explicitly scream âavianâ at first, but upon closer observation and with his clear previous inspiration this is a resounding yes.
Does he act like a bird?Â
Many of the mannerisms and behaviors he displays can just be chalked up to him being a little eccentric, but with the sheer number of them that also parallel birds in some way this is also a pretty convincing yes.
Does he have bird-like abilities?Â
While most of the emphasis is on his wings and what they can do, it does seem that he not only possesses things like heightened senses which could be attributed to avian abilities but he also very much possess high intelligence and incredibly fast reaction times which birds are also known for.
Even if we only gave Hawks a âmaybe/half a pointâ for those last two, he still meets the 2â3 that Spinner did. So we have another question to ask: Does a character have to have an explicitly named âanimalâ quirk to be considered to be/resemble a specific animal? Letâs look at Ojirou and Tokoyami for reference.
Ojirouâs quirk is just âtail,â but heâs been described by his peers and classmates as a monkey and does seem to share some more monkey-like features. It isnât lumped in with his quirk because the only notable monkey-like quality he possesses is a tail. He doesnât have fangs or an opposable toe - he just has a tail. For quirk classification as far as hero work goes, thatâs the only important thing to note.
Tokoyami, on the other hand has an entire literal bird head, but nothing else. He has a beak, feathers, and even in illustrations of him as a baby he had fluffier feathers on his head. Even with only those details, he just screams âbird!â However, his quirk is classified as âDark Shadowâ because thatâs what sets him apart for hero work.
Back at Hawks we see his quirk classified as âfierce wingsâ but like Ojirou and especially like Tokoyami, the emphasis on his wings is what sets his abilities as a hero apart. Otherwise, heâs just a guy who looks and acts a LOT like a bird.
But astute observers may have noticed Iâve left out a detail thatâs more or less a nail in the coffin on the whole matter, so let me ask a question: Tsuyu in particular has something else of note that solidifies in our minds that she is, indeed, a frog - she explicitly calls herself a frog. Could we say the same about Hawks?
Chapter 199 - Explicit Type
Bingo. Hawks has known himself for as long as heâs been alive. He knows his habits, his impulses, his family/genes, and so on. If he calls himself a bird, are we going to call him a liar? In fact, he calls himself a bird not once, but twice!
Thatâs pretty much it. With the evidence stacked to that degree, Iâd be hard pressed to NOT believe heâs a bird.
That was a long amount of text to get through, so if youâre here at the end thank you for sticking out with me to this point. I really appreciate it. This is more or less the process I use when analyzing anything and everything whether it be HeroAca related or not. Maybe itâll help you if youâve struggled with literary analysis, or at the very least I hope you got some enjoyment out of it.
TL;DR If Hawks looks like a bird, walks (acts) like a bird, is based on a bird (character), and calls himself a bird, heâs probably a bird.

01/01/2021-Amazing New Yearâs day of birdwatching: Part 2-A green and white walk at Lakeside continued and a coastal walk (Ten different photos in this set to those I tweeted tonight)Â
A follow on from my last blog which I have linked at the bottom:Â
As the walk continued from seeing the Mute Swan on beach lake up close at Lakeside and taking the first two pictures in this photoset of views I was after just one or maybe two key species to cap off a brilliant walk of birds again with some fantastic species seen. An icing on the cake, cherry on the top type moment. Green Woodpecker or Redwing birds that are often key ones of my Lakeside New Yearâs Day walk were two that sprang to mind which I had seen a fair bit of in recent months here. As I walked through the muddy and quite frosty and icy nature reserve area where I took the third, fourth and fifth picture in this photoset in this area, I just stood and watched over the area for a minute before exiting the areas through the gate as people were coming down the central path so to wait to go out and help social distancing. I was delighted when doing this to spot a small brown bird go into a tree, it was a Wren. Our commonest bird, but also one of our most elusive so I feel so lucky when I see them at Lakeside on New Yearâs Day walks as I have done for a great number of years in a row now. I saw it quickly then got a good view. This I thought did as that one final addition on the fantastic walk and it was one of my favourite moments of the day seeing an iconic bird.Â
I did have more Lakeside moments to come though moving on around the bowl area and to the Marbled White meadow area that I nickname in the east of the site, the area shown in the sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset. Having heard one or some at the start of the walk their high pithced and distinctive call echoing over the country park, I really wanted to see a Green Woodpecker and had seen them in these grassy parts of the area late on in a New Yearâs Day walk in 2016 and in 2018 and 2020 I saw them early in January by the bowl area so its a reliable spot for them. I saw two quite big birds flying through the trees and sensed these were Green Woodpeckers, waiting as they went behind branches it was a joyful moment to see the bright green body of a Green Woodpecker flying through when one flew into a clearing. A sure but quick view of it, I had seen my second of my thirty favourite bird species in 2021. Things got even more amazing as the pair of birds flew around a bit and showed very well in the meadow area. I got amazing views of this very precious bird for me, some of my best ever at Lakeside or with the species I believe. Getting top chances for photos I tweeted one I took of it on the frosted branches a great takeaway photo and moment from my brilliant first day of the year. It was exceptional to witness such close and top views of this amazing bird species a top early moment of the year for sure. It was good seeing the bracken with frost on here too.Â
On the way out of Lakeside Chaffinch stayed on my mind a bird I usually see here on New Yearâs Day. I knew from the other day they went into trees by the allotment near to the entrance at the north. On the way there I was happy to spot a Dunnock in some trees with a group of Blue Tits always a nice bird to see for the first time in a year early on. Funnily enough like Greenfinch the only time I had see one here on New Yearâs Day was 2017. Just as I was right at the entrance to now exit through the gate after coming close to seeing a Chaffinch further back on the walk I saw a bird fly into a tree and sort proclaimed with some euphoria sort of âThatâs big, thatâs bold, (compared to smaller birds), thatâs Chaffinchâ as I realised it was the bird. A great one to end an amazing Lakeside walk this year for sure, not too far from where I saw my first of 2020. I ended my Lakeside walk with the second highest amount of birds I had ever seen from home birdwatching and the Lakeside walk or the first bit of my day compared to my previous years, behind 2016 and ahead of 2020.Â
The Lakeside part of the day was not yet over though as after lunch and processing photos and entering my year ticks onto my new spreadsheet we went for a coastal walk within Hampshire. Due to tier 4 COVID lockdown restrictions which now cover all of the county and the stay at home message that brings currently I as I said in this blog in October: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/633537805171195905/31102020-lymington-and-photos-in-the-garden will be omitting certain locations from my posts about the day and this was one. On our way there as we passed the river by the ford area at Lakeside where I had checked on the walk I spotted a Little Egret which was amazing. Another favourite bird of mine to get as a tick on New Yearâs Day and not for the first time, but never at Lakeside something I had always hoped to do as my 2020 showed they can be seen here so this was a little goal achieved. It was a crazy journey thereafter really as I saw my first Buzzard, Jay and Kestrel of the year and all great views the birds of prey more than one. So Little Egret, Buzzard and Jay were as I did last New Yearâs Day with the former two and Great Crested Grebe three consecutive favourite bird year ticks on my chronologically ordered list highlighted red. So this was memorable.Â
Soon into the coastal walk I was delighted to spot another of my favourite birds the Brent Goose with two around and we saw so many of this special bird for Hampshire this afternoon. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one this afternoon, as we walked around and ticked off a delightful array of coastal wading bird species and ducks from Gadwalls, Avocets to a steady stream of Redshanks flying out to sea. All good birds and so many of them appearing on my year list on a New Yearâs Day for the first time as we had been to the coast on New Yearâs Days before but not to this type of habitat.Â
It was amazing to see a Marsh Harrier too we got two separate cracking views of this wonderful raptor the first one at least a female with that cracking golden head which we are in a good bit of form for seeing as such, it really did look so beautiful and was fantastic to watch. Very prolonged views of the bird too emerging as one of the top stars of my New Yearâs Day another first seeing one on 1st January. Snipe, Rock Pipit, Song Thrush and Common Gull were among a stock of valuable birds to tick off here too with nice views.Â
But perhaps the day was defined by what came next as we saw two Kingfishers getting a particularly brilliant view of the first, and then there was a third further on in the walk. Perhaps led here by frozen conditions on lakes and water bodies elsewhere they as tends to happen it was spectacular to watch them dive to hunt for fish in the sea. These were exceptional wildlife moments getting stunning views of this electric bird. Immensely precious birds to be able to spend time with. I felt so honoured to see them today and took the ninth and tenth pictures in this photoset of them. As we walked on after the first two Kingfishers we managed to see a distant Peregrine. This did something very notable for me along with a Shelduck and the others from before as it meant Iâve seen nine of my thirty favourite birds on the first day of the year. I normally see between one and five of these on a New Yearâs Day and see the rest as the week and year goes on which I have always been lucky with, so this really smashed it in terms of seeing favourite birds of mine to see nearly a third of my list in a day! This is going to be one of the big takeaways from my opening day of birdwatching of 2021 and a unique point to my year. It sort of feels a bit like last year we had the Portland trip after Lakeside on New Yearâs Day in more normal times and all the big names of birds but this year its my favourite birds that have come into the limelight among others of course to really make my New Yearâs Day.Â
And I cannot believe what a New Yearâs Day Iâve had! Last year I came into it with the goal of finally beating my 2016 highest ever amount of birds seen on New Yearâs Day figure and as I charged in my 2020 wildlife and photography highlights blogs recently I did that and then some beating the figure in 2016 of 38 with 49 birds seen. This year I sort of thought if I could compete with the sort of figures I was getting between 2016 and 2019 after one day, never falling below 35, that would be good with all the restrictions. But with a few key year ticks before the end of the Lakeside walk putting me in a good position I all of a sudden thought today if we do well at the coast I could get near to last yearâs. As that walk went on it soon became clear I had a brilliant chance to beat it and I beat it by 11. I can hardly believe that given 2020âČs start was so amazing and one of my best birdwatching days ever. But I think the two locations visited today possibly just provided more variety up against last yearâs all star cast of top birds. So its an interesting balance between quality and quantity, but I am just so proud to have had two New Yearâs Days that had both. It seems the way to get totals like this is to mix the Lakeside habitat with a salt marsh type habitat on the coast for species variety. A very pleasing start to the year of birds for me indeed. I hope you all had a nice day.Â

hi I have some theories about the Problematic Rock
In my essay for chapter 82, I said that I had settled on a theory of What The Deal Is With Cairngorm. My thoughts on the subject are a bit all over the place, so in the hope of presenting things in a coherent manner, Iâve laid out my thought process from the past eleven months or so in roughly chronological order, beginning with the nitpick that started it all. Welcome to my twisted mind, and all that.
For the most part, the way the series applies fantasy concepts to actual geology has been fairly sound.  For example, tourmaline generates an electric charge when heated, so Melon radiates electricity when upset.  Cinnabar the rock often comes out of the ground covered in native mercury, so Cinnabar the character is surrounded by magical floating mercury.  Alexandrite turns red or purple in incandescent light, so the light the Lunarians give off changes Alexâs color and gives them a mood swing to boot.  Itâs exaggerated and fantastical, but itâs nonetheless grounded in some nugget of geology trivia which one might find on the back of a Snapple cap.  But, Ghost and Cairnâs condition in the story does not line up with how phantom crystals work, even within the science-fantasy framework weâve got going here.  At first, I just filed it away next to other inaccuracies such as Antarc shouldnât be able to trudge through snow without dissolving in a puddle of their own brine, much less dive into the ocean unscathed. However, if my theory(s) is correct, then this apparent lapse in the internal logic of the story might have in fact been deliberate foreshadowing.  But Iâm getting ahead of myself.
First, some context. Phantom crystals form by way of two distinct but related processes:
During a crystalâs formation out of a solution, its growth is temporarily halted for one of any number of reasons. Â During this time, dust falls onto the surface of the crystal. Â As the crystal begins growing again, these tiny debris become trapped within, and if the rest of the crystal is sufficiently transparent, the included material appears from the outside as the outline of a crystal within a crystal.
The other process to which this term applies involves color zoning, and is a bit easier to explain. Â During a crystalâs formation, the chemicals that make up the solution change slightly, and these impurities cause one part of the crystal to become a different color from another part. Â If the color zoning is concentric, and the different colors in question are visible from outside the crystal, it can be labeled a phantom crystal. Â Ghost and Cairn appear to be this second type.
So hereâs what Iâm getting at: a phantom crystal is not two separate crystals, in much the same way that the rings in a tree trunk arenât a bunch of separate trees. Â Therefore, it doesnât make sense for Ghost and Cairngorm to be two separate people, and if they are actually intended to be examples of this phenomenon, it raises some questions. Â For one thing, watermelon tourmaline forms via the exact same process of concentric color zoning I described in example number two; since you usually canât see the pinkish part from outside of the green layer of crystal, itâs not often labeled a phantom crystal, but itâs the same phenomenon nonetheless. Â So, why is it that Cairn and Ghost are two different people, but the green and red parts of Melon arenât? Â For that matter, why arenât the two halves of Euclase two separate people? Thereâs certainly more of colorless-Euclase than there is of Ghost. Â If mere color zoning were enough, then why are Ghost and Cairn the only examples of highly-conjoined-twins amongst the cast? Â Unless of course, we werenât given an accurate picture of how these two came to be, and thereâs something fishy going on.
Of course, whether or not this little contradiction is actually meaningful wholly depends on if Ichikawa was even aware of the distinction as she was writing. Â As I recall she once said in an interview that she wasnât very familiar with geology in the first place before she started writing hnk. Â But, like I said at the beginning of this essay, this is what got me started down the rabbit hole. Â From this observation arose two different trains of thought. Â One came to me pretty quickly, but the other took a few months to materialize.
The first idea that popped into my head when I realized that this inaccuracy could have been deliberate was that Ghost and Cairngorm might not be separate people, and there was some split-personality shenanigans going on. Â Iâll quickly list the things I think this theory has going for it with some bullet points.
Remember that one time, when Cairngorm referred to Ghost as their âformer self?â Â And that other time, in the official translation of volume 6, when they referred to Ghost as their âother half?â Â That is rather curious terminology for referring to oneâs sibling.
That one time in chapter 39, where Cairn repeated Ghostâs sentiment about being âtired of prayingâ verbatim, and the composition of the panels seemingly called attention to it.
It would serve to explain a certain contradiction in Cairnâs personality: despite their aggressiveâand at times violentâdemeanor, they nonetheless act like a total doormat in all the ways that really matter. Â They live their life according to someone elseâs wishes, theyâre quick to pass off decision making to others, and they fold under pressure pretty easily. Â What if Cairngorm is, in fact, Ghostâs idea of what being assertive is like, without any understanding of what it means to actually be independent or confident?Â
A common critique of the story is that Ghostâs character was rather perfunctory, and their death felt like a second-rate retread of Antarcâs fate. Â Well, if Cairn and Ghost are the same person, then they werenât actually unceremoniously dropped from the story after all. Â Come to think of it, right before they were supposedly taken, Ghost said they wanted to change; what if they actually did?
As many of you have noticed, Ghost is one of the few characters who isnât ProblematiqueTM . Doubtlessly, Ichikawa now regrets killing them off before they could do something kinda nasty.  Even Antarc got the chance to cluelessly trample over Phosâs self-esteem before getting turned into road salt.  But, if it were revealed that Ghost was actually the same character as creamed corn, then Ichikawa could drag their good name through the mud with one fell swoop.  (Iâm just trying to think from her perspective, guys!  Her cruel, sadistic perspectiveâŠ)
But ultimately, when I got around to wondering why on earth they would have a split personality in the first place, I found that this line of inquiry raised more questions than answers. Unlike my second theory, which mostly just raises answers.
(I know I just dumped a big tinfoil hat at my readersâ feet like a cat gifting its owner a decapitated bird, but please keep bearing with me, Iâm not even halfway done.)
The idea that Iâve found to be the most fruitful came in the weeks following chapter 75. Â Iâve brought up this line from Aechmea multiple times (probably to the point of redundancy,) because itâs the biggest hint weâve gotten so far that thereâs some Cairn-related context weâre not yet privy to. Â And the more the narrative keeps reminding us of itâusually by way of Cairngorm bringing it up with varying levels of anxietyâthe more it seems to be alluding to something important. Â So I got to thinking that whatever my little plot twist was, it would have to account for Aechmeaâs cryptic bullshit. Â I put forward a couple preliminary ideas in my essay for chapter 75, but Iâve since discarded those in favor of my second theory.
So, somehow Aechmea knew Cairngorm before they came to the moon, and neither Cairngorm, (nor Ghost for that matter,) remembers meeting him. When I tried to think of how this could be possible, while also keeping in mind my little bugbear about phantom crystals, I developed a theory thatâs much more pedestrian by the standards of the hnk fandom.  I am of course, talking about the mysterious artificial gem experiments that the Lunarians conducted.  That sure is a plot element which has been left dangling, huh?  And since no one, least of all myself, believes Stinkmea when he claims that the experiments were a complete failure, it has been a favored pastime of people who write walls of text to speculate on who amongst the cast might have been planted on earth by the Lunarians; e.g. Obsidian, Antarc, new Morga and Goshe⊠I imagine someone at some point has even postulated that Phos themselves is from the moon.  But, if you pay close attention to how Aechmea, and later, Barbata describe the process by which they attempted to create artificial gems, it lines up strikingly well with what we know about Ghost and Cairngorm, and it also serves to explain the geological inaccuracy I was talking about earlier.
Aechmea describes how the Lunarians tried to create their own gems by grafting pieces of gems they had captured from earth onto artificial bodies, and that they were dumped on earth before being retrieved after they showed no signs of life.  Barbata also mentions it later, in more oblique terms.  Heâs speaking vaguely, but his warning to Phos feels a bit odd in its specificity. The use of the phrase âemotionally delicateâ also raises my eyebrows a bit.  I may be reading too much into this, but I feel that his hypothetical example is less hypothetical than heâs letting on.  Perhaps, he is in fact referring to a certain someone in particular, who is emotionally fragile, and subsequently lost their sense of self after being subjected to this experiment.  HmmmâŠ
So hereâs what I think went down: once upon a time, probably before the current generation of gems had been born, there was a gem on earth who was just plain old colorless Quartz. Iâm going to call them OG!Quartz. One day, OG!Quartz is captured by the Lunarians, and Aechmea uses them for his little gem experiment, probably with Barbata being the one to carry it out. He shaves off the outermost layer of OG!Quartz and discards the rest of them. Then, he grafts those pieces onto an artificial body made of black Quartz.  The inclusions from OG!Quartz permeate into the artificial material, and thus Cairngorm is born.  The Lunarians subsequently dump them on earth, at which point Kongou, who may or may not realize whatâs going on, picks them up and names them Ghost Quartz, despite the fact that they didnât come about via that process.
This would explain a lot of things. Â If so little of OG!Quartz was used to make Ghost Quartz, they would likely be unable to remember their previous life, or the ensuing events on the moon, for that matter. Â And since Cairngorm would be a newborn at the time, they wouldnât be able to remember Aechmea either, thus solving the riddle of how Aechmea knew Cairngorm before they came the moon.
It would also clue us in to what Aechmea meant by love, why he was quick to swoop in and take advantage of Cairn, and why he kept Cairnâs original arm around. Â If they were the one success after a series of failed experiments, itâs possible that Aechmea feels a sense of ownership over Cairn, as if theyâre his accomplishment. Â (Yikes.)
It would also explain another thing that has stuck in mind. Â The way Ghost was taken was kind of weird, wasnât it? Â At the time, the Lunarians were being oddly particular about nabbing Ghost instead of Cairn. Â Usually, the Lunarians try to shatter the gems and be done with it, not shave a bunch of little pieces off the outside. Â Furthermore, Cairngorm was thoroughly wrecked by the end of that fight. Â The Lunarians could have easily grabbed them both and gotten away before help could arrive, but instead, they pushed Cairn off of the vessel and only took Ghost. Â If we assume though that Ghost and Cairn are the result of one of those gem experiments, the Lunarians actions during that battle start to make sense. Â Perhaps the Lunarians wanted to see if Cairngorm was alive in their own right, or if the pieces of Ghost were just dragging the rest of the body around. Â They wouldnât be able to tell the difference from their distant vantage point. Â So, they nabbed Ghost and intentionally left Cairn behind in order to further observe their experiment. Â
(I should point out that when I say âthe Lunarians,â assume Iâm referring to Aechmea, Barbata, and perhaps a handful of other unnamed extras. Â Aechmea probably doles out knowledge of his obtuse schemes on a need-to-know basis, and I doubt people like Cicada, or Quieta, or Gosheâs gnarly skater friends know anything about this.)
Going back to this page, Cairnâs expression has stuck in my mind. Â Theyâre trembling, and have a fearful look on their face. Â By all accounts, even if what Aechmea just said was confusing, it should still be something Cairn would be happy to hear. Â But their immediate reaction is one of understated horror. Â Itâs almost as if they intuited that there was something very wrong with that statement, even if they canât put their finger on why. This leads us into another question thatâs been on my mind which this theory might serve to explain.
In my very first essay about Caringorm, I ran into a bit of a wall when trying to figure out why Cairngormâs personality is the way it is.  I figured at the time that Cairngormâs issues arose from having no agency for most of their life, and that their relationship with Ghost was perhaps much less amicable than we were lead to believe.  And while itâs hard to argue that being a prisoner in their own body for most of their life hasnât messed them up, I donât think thatâs the only thing going on here.  Furthermore, as far as Cairnâs relationship with Ghost was concerned, we havenât heard anything about it since, which leads me to believe that itâs not where the trouble lies.  While I still stand by most of what I said in that essayâparticularly about how Cairnâs dependency complex compels them to treat themselves as a vehicle for someone elseâs desiresâthereâs a major aspect to all of this that I overlooked at the time. During their brief tenure in the series, Ghost exhibited a lot of the same issues that Cairngorm does now.
The way they talked about living life following Lapisâs ordersâas if they were Lapisâs lackey rather than their partner, the way they latched onto Phos so strongly after they showed them the barest hint of interest, their abysmal self-esteem⊠It all seems eerily similar to Cairnâs issues, even if it manifested in a more muted fashion.  So, why is it that Ghost exhibited some of Cairngormâs maladaptive coping mechanisms, despite the fact that Cairn should have been the only one of the two who needed to develop them in the first place?
I havenât exactly put too fine a point on it since I donât live with the condition myself, and thus donât want to risk putting my foot in my mouth, but I canât really elucidate on this in a concise manner while dancing around the subject.  Ever since chapter 68, Iâve been looking at Cairngorm through the lens of borderline personality disorder. Since they seem to check more and more boxes off the symptom list with each new chapter, I think itâs a useful lens through which to view them, whether or not itâs one that Ichikawa had in mind.  But, BPD generally arises from trauma, to the extent that many psychologists see it as an alternate manifestation of PTSD.  So, for the longest time, Iâve wondered how it was that Cairn and Ghost ended up the way they did. Thereâs no clear answer in the narrative at this point.
This brings us to what Barbata alluded to, that the process of trying to create an artificial gem was damaging to the minds of the those who were subjected to it. Â If Ghost and Cairn were (re)born as the result of something terrible, something that destroyed their sense of self, it might explain why they both have mental issues that are indicative of past trauma, despite those issues not having any obvious source. Â The only other possible source of trauma I can come up with is that the relationship the two of them had with Lapis might have been an abusive one. Â But if that were the case, then there should have been some buildup for it in the chapters following 67. Â And while Lapis and Ghost have barely been mentioned in the interim, thereâs been a whole lot of incremental reminders that Aechmeaâs a shady bastard whoâs hiding something from Cairn. Â Where thereâs smoke, thereâs probably a fire.
Well, thatâs about it.  Thanks for sticking with this to the end; hopefully, I didnât make too many flagrant leaps in logic. Ichikawa, if you would be so kind as to confirm my theories, and also let Phos peacefully live out the rest of their days with their snail friends, I would really appreciate it. See you all in the essay for chapter 83.

i obviously did not think this through
So the other day I thought it would be fun to make up my own Essential Rewatch List leading up to 15.01, and boy howdy was I ever wrong! This post is the result of that. Instead of a conveniently streamlined list of important episodes for meta and character development highlights, instead have this 15k word probably-useless behemoth...
I debated not even posting this on tumblr because itâs just so massive. But heck this was a lot of work so here it is.
For reference purposes, I refer a lot to my rewatch notes, but mostly in later seasons. If youâd rather just go to the beginning of my tag for the most recent rewatch, 1.01 is the last post on this page, and then you can just continue chronologically from there:
https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/tagged/s14+hellatus+rewatch/chrono/page/3
If you want to read more about a specific episode, every singe episode is filed on my blog with the episode tag. For example, all posts about 1.01 are tagged like this:
https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/tagged/spn-1.01
To find a different episode, just plug in the correct episode number and voila.
If youâd prefer to skip an episode but donât fully recall it and just want a quick refresher, every episode is linked on this page of the superwiki. Those links will serve you up a tidy synopsis as well as link you to the transcripts for every episode (linked at the bottom of each episode page):
http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/Category:Episodes
I started out making reasonable, logical entries for every episode, and then... kinda went off the rails toward the end... apologies for how chaotic this might read. Most of it was typed off the top of my head, and I havenât edited it so apologies for any errors. Under a cut because FIFTEEN. THOUSAND. WORDS.
Good luck.
1.01 Pilot Obviously this episode sets up everything that comes after, and gives us a platform from which to understand exactly how the showâs mythology will eventually evolve. It also establishes a baseline for understanding Sam and Dean and their personal character evolutions and family dynamics. Probably essential viewing in any rewatch...
1.02 Wendigo Like so many early episodes, we learn more about Dean and Sam, and the missing father theyâre searching for. And here we get âSaving people, hunting things, the family businessâ that becomes the motto of the Winchesters.
1.03 Dead in the Water
Sam is shocked to learn that Deanâs good with kids, and how Dean was traumatized as a 4-year-old. Like, dude, he practically raised you, Sam⊠makes sense heâs good with kids...
1.04 Phantom Traveler Specky the Wonderdemon, who was terrifyingly beyond their pay grade at the time. Kinda hilarious in retrospect⊠(also first use of Deanâs homemade EMF meter)
1.05 Bloody Mary Aah, Sam is keeping secrets from Dean (about his psychic powers and that heâd foreseen Jessâs death), and we learn ghosts can be attached to items that must be destroyed to banish the ghost.
1.06 Skin ooh Dean, take off that shirt yes⊠no⊠wait⊠stop⊠you can stop with the shirt you donât⊠no please put your skin back on⊠(no, seriously, we learn A LOT about Dean from the shapeshifter, and so does Sam⊠Thereâs a heck of a lot Dean keeps buried. Also a reminder that shifter episodes tend to involve these sorts of buried secret things for Dean. Also Deanâs first âlegal deathâ even if not actual death)
1.07 Hook Man Another ghost attached to an object, Samâs first flirtation with anyone after Jessâs death, and Deanâs proficiency and innovation in hunting techniques continues to surprise Sam-- with the first use of salt shells for a shotgun.
1.08 Bugs Oh look more first season talking of their different experiences and memories of childhood and especially their very different relationships with John. If you can ignore the bug-related portions of the episode. Also I think still the only time in canon Sam and Dean have used umbrellas.
1.09 Home
Well if you absolutely need an in-depth exploration of the Winchester Family Dynamic as it stood in s1, this is a good baseline episode. Maryâs guilt expressed by her ghost in the house where she died, more exploration of Samâs psychic powers, and we first see John on screen in the âpresent day.â Sam also learns it was Dean who carried him out of the house when he was a baby, and uses the exact same line John told Dean in this episode (take your brother outside as fast as you can and donât look back)
1.10 Asylum So much of s1 was Dean getting orders from John and⊠following them. We get an interesting glimpse inside Samâs head (having heard some of Deanâs dark secrets in 1.06) and via ghost interference Sam says some pretty bitter things to Dean (and wouldâve shot him if Dean had been dumb enough to hand him a loaded gun. lucky Deanâs smarter than that). But now we have their baseline issues laid out on the table for us.
1.11 Scarecrow Sam is sick of taking orders from John and decides to go find John on his own rather than following another order. He meets Meg hitchhiking, and she tries to lure him in. Luckily Sam realizes Dean is in trouble and goes back to save him. They decide to stick together again. Of course.
1.12 Faith Here we go⊠the first moment the show realized it had the potential to be something bigger than a MotW horror/fantasy road trip. Deanâs first brush with capital-D Death (in this case, a reaper). The first time in canon anyone suggests that Dean was âchosen by the Lordâ for a greater purpose.
1.13 Route 666 Racist Ghost Truck. But also the first time we learn an important difference between Dean and Sam. Sam hid everything about his life from Jess (a woman he was planning to propose to), but Dean fell in love with Cassie over a matter of weeks and told the whole truth to⊠and she dumped him for it because she thought he was lying to her. That heartbreak goes a long way toward the cavalier attitude Dean puts on toward relationships in general in the early seasons. Tell them the truth and theyâll leave you for it, but he wonât live the lie that Sam was perfectly happy to...
1.14 Nightmare Aah, more of Samâs powers (darkest timeline edition with Max), and Sam credits John for being a better father⊠until he sees Deanâs reaction to that comment⊠and we get that Dean stood between Sam and Johnâs⊠lack of parenting skills >.>
1.15 The Benders âPlain old people are often worse than monstersâ
1.16 Shadow The return of Meg, who is Up To No Good messing around with scarier demons than good old Specky was. We finally have John in the picture, but he deems it too dangerous for them to stick together, blaming their vulnerability on their care for each other, and just PFFFFFFT how often has the show kicked this notion to the curb? Give it a few more episodes⊠Sam also expresses his desire to finally get their revenge so he can leave hunting for good and go back to his ânormal life.â Dean is crushed and upset by this revelation.
1.17 Hell House Aah, the prank war :â), and the idiot ghostfacers :â). Itâs a tulpa.
1.18 Something Wicked Well if you need your heart ripped out with Dean Feels, youâre in the right place. Sam learns even more about Deanâs struggles as a kid under Johnâs orders, and what âfailureâ to obey meant to Dean-- that it once almost cost Sam his life. Sam gets a better idea of the burden of guilt and the weight of responsibility that Dean has carried for far, far too long. And Dean gets a bit of closure, finally killing the shtriga.
1.19 Provenance Sam gets to unburden himself a bit from Jessâs death and make a real connection with a wonderful woman who gets a real peek into the reality of their lives and the supernatural. Still, he walks away, and completely loses touch with her for like⊠7 years...
1.20 Dead Man's Blood Sam and Dean are sick of blindly following orders, and sick of wild goose chases. And they demand answers from John. We learn about vampires for the first time, and are finally introduced to The Colt, which will take on so much significance over the seasons that itâs RIDICULOUS. A weapon Mary heard bedtime stories about as a child, now become real to be used to get their revenge on the demon who killed her? Which will resurface again and again to either become their hope or destroy their hope⊠so much baggage attached to a single gun.
1.21 Salvation So much plotting, but the demons get their way and get the Winchesters separated and set up. Sam fails to shoot the demon with the Colt and John is captured.
1.22 Devil's Trap As the title suggests, this is where we learn about the Devilâs Trap. And see the âsingle stepâ exorcism performed (not the two-step Specky exorcism from 1.04). Dean rejects Johnâs orders and âwastesâ a bullet from the Colt to save Samâs life. But itâs still all a trap, because the demon is possessing John. Dean realizes it when John is NOT FURIOUS that he âwastedâ that bullet. It nearly kills Dean, and Sam refuses to kill John in order to kill the demon. The demon escapes, the Winchesters have one bullet left in the Colt, and then theyâre run over by a demon-possessed semi trucker.
2.01 In My Time of Dying Deanâs second brush with Death (again, reapers). He learns a lot while mostly dead that unfortunately he wonât remember for a long time (until 4.15, to be precise) about reapers and their powers (manipulating reality, etc.). Sam is desperate to save Dean, and John trades his life (and the Colt) to the Demon for Deanâs life, lays one HELL of a burden on Dean-- either save Sam, or youâll have to kill him. No further details, just that horrific fact which Dean will try to shield Sam from as long as he can, which will (as per usual) probably only make things worse when they eventually come out. Dying wishes on this show SUCK DONKEYS. Remember that when we get to 5.22...
2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown Spoiler alert: nobody actually loves a clown, especially not Sam. But heck Dean driving the soccer mom minivan is priceless. And weâre introduced to Ellen, Jo, and Ash at the Roadhouse. Sam and Dean are like⊠whoa there are actual hunter gathering places? And begin to uncover just how sheltered and weird their lives have been, even for hunters.
2.03 Bloodlust like 1.15, âsometimes people are the worst monsters,â with a generous side helping of âsometimes monsters arenât actually monsters.â Dean gets to question a lot of what he was taught his whole life by John, via the proxy of Gordon Walker and his hate-on for vampires. But Dean realizes thereâs a limit to killing everything not-human⊠the beginning of the era of âkilling what deserves to be killed and not just anyone will doâ
2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things Zombie. Considering Jackâs longtime fascination with zombies, and how 14.20 ended⊠possibly relevant thematically on several levels⊠Girl resurrected by a dude for love (she didnât love him in life⊠but was basically a âsoulless personâ as a zombie, as we will come to understand in later seasons). Itâs a terrible idea to try and bring back the dead⊠>.> But this is all wrapped up in grief and how Sam and Dean each deal with grief in their own ways, and how they donât really understand how the other is processing Johnâs death. In the MotW language of the show, zombies are about grief for the past and an inability to express it or move past it. Theyâre just emotional baggage (like shapeshifter eps reveal hidden truths and vampires are about revenge)
2.05 Simon Said More special children affected by the demon exhibit psychic powers⊠Sam is unsettled by the mind control, but unlike Dean heâs immune to it⊠Heâs scared heâs gonna turn âevilâ (and this is the first hint he gets that Dean might feel the same, based on the horrific dying promise John extracted from him that we still havenât heard, and which weâre reminded is clearly weighing on Dean anyway)
2.06 No Exit Aah, Jo. They hunt the ghost of HH Holmes with her and learn some terrible things about their fatherâs history-- that he probably played a part in Joâs fatherâs death. We also learn Dean sleeps real funny in chairs...ow it just looks so dang painful :âD (but they do comeuppance real well on the ghostâŠ)
2.07 The Usual Suspects I love this just for the structure of the episode, showing us Hunting with Sam and Dean 101-- how to avoid arrest and imprisonment edition. This just gives us so much insight into how well they work together as a team, and the degree to which theyâve developed code words and references and how they are able to craft seamless backstories in the event a hunt goes south. Itâs just⊠delightful.
2.08 Crossroad Blues The introduction of Crossroads Demons. And the first confirmation to Dean that John did indeed sell his soul for Deanâs life. Uncomfy revelation. The demon offers Dean a deal⊠his father resurrected and ten years to enjoy his company before Deanâs soul would end up in Hell instead. Dean declines. But their arsenal of weapons against demons (and the newly-introduced Hellhounds) grows to include goofer dust.
2.09 Croatoan Aah, a terrible time was had by all⊠the demons are scheming, creating demonic viruses and testing Samâs immunity to them. But of course Dean and Sam donât know that⊠Deanâs comment as they leave town: âI'm already starting to feel like this is the one that got away.â And ends on a cliffhanger of Dean about to tell Sam what John told him in 2.01.
2.10 Hunted Sam is enraged Dean would keep that from him, and wants to seek out more Special Children to learn what they can, but Dean wants to hide out and bide their time for safetyâs sake. And maybe itâs just because I was in my 30âs when I first watched this show, but Sam pulls what I still think of as one of his signature childish moves and runs away in the night. But down that path lies revenge against the demon, so of course Sam runs into vampire-adjacent Gordon Walker. We learn more about how the Winchesters work together, the secret code word âfunkytown,â and that sometimes they actually get the authorities to work in their favor. Theyâre good at manipulating the system...
2.11 Playthings Ghosts, Hoodoo that wasnât to cause harm, but to protect against the ghost. Sam gets spectacularly drunk and makes Dean promise to actually kill him if he goes bad. Yikes. We also have the âwhy does everybody think weâre gay,â and Samâs reply of âyouâre kinda trying too hard to be butchâ that Dean⊠doesnât have a response to. Sam gets to SAVE somebody (he puts a gold star in his book as proof heâs not turning evil yet)
2.12 Nightshifter This is one I recommend actually watching⊠another shapeshifter (not a mandroid), so uncomfortable truths time. Sam lies thinking heâs protecting someone from danger, but it just drives Ron into even WORSE danger (and gets him killed). Everything about this hunt goes sideways, except they do actually kill the shifter, but now theyâve got the FBI on their tails. This is Winchesters Scrambling In A Tight Spot nirvana.
2.13 Houses of the Holy The first hint that the show⊠could possibly someday include angels, but theyâre still on the BS list by the end of this episode. We learn more about Samâs belief in God, Deanâs utter disdain for the idea of God, and the fact that Mary had believed in angels. Dean witnesses something he canât explain, and Sam points in Deanâs direction when asking, âThatâs Michael, right?â
2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign From holy to Hell⊠Sam is possessed by Meg, who leads Dean on a wild goose chase and does some pretty horrific stuff with Samâs body. >.> They learn about the antipossession charms from Bobby (and probably get the tattoos shortly after this). Dean still refuses to kill Sam even when he begs (though we learn it was Meg testing or goading all of them).
2.15 Tall Tales Weâre introduced to the Trickster (whoâs even tricking them about his actual identity). Sam and Dean are completely bamboozled until Bobby shows up and points them to whatâs really going on. Thereâs a lot of fun stuff about Sam and Deanâs relationship and how they see themselves and each other in here, though. And of course we know who the trickster actually is, which makes this all so much more interesting in retrospect⊠bit of comeuppance and lessons learned.
2.16 Roadkill An interesting take on a ghost MotW episode, where one of the ghosts doesnât realize sheâs dead, and how Sam and Dean work with her to save them all.
2.17 Heart Samâs first actual sort-of-relationship with a woman. Who happens to be a werewolf⊠oops. Thereâs a lot of Sam Pain in this one, and Dean feeling like heâs failed in protecting Sam, yet again. But we are introduced to werewolves, which take on the monster meta shorthand of exposing or understanding their own inner monstrousness.
2.18 Hollywood Babylon And itâs Deanâs turn to have a little fling, where their concept of a âvacationâ is âdeal with mysterious haunting and death on a movie set.â And like in 1.12, this all comes about because some dingdong thinks he can do whatever he want. ALSO! The true monster of the week here⊠IS A WRITER. A writer who is furious that his story was trashed, and produced into something unrecognizable as his actual writing. I think this one might be HIGHLY relevant to 14.20, just for that. For the deadly tantrum of a writer who didnât get his way. (plus the brilliance of Dean going from complete noob to the best PA in the history of Hollywood in like⊠a day⊠heâs just that good :âD)
2.19 Folsom Prison Blues In doing a favor for their fatherâs marine corps buddy (so the ghost of John hangs all over this one), they deliberately get themselves arrested and put in jail. Dean fits in there just as well as he did as a PA. Heâs⊠really just that good at acting. Now I have Green Onions stuck in my head and I want a milkshake. And a donut.
2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be DJINN. aka the monster meta signal of deep personal introspection. What we learn about Dean in this episode is just heartbreaking. What he would wish for (Mary alive, Sam happily at Stanford Law School engaged to Jess) and the consequences heâs willing to endure for that to be a reality (his own lifeâs work negated, where everyone assumes heâs a drunk and a thief and a loser).Â
2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One Dean just wanted pie. Instead Sam gets taken by demons. We finally find out what the demon wanted with him (sort of). Sam plays in the Demon Hunger Games, and loses at the last moment⊠(Dean gets to feel what itâs like to have a psychic vision, and hates it)
2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two Dean sells his soul to resurrect Sam for the bargain price of one year before heâll be dragged to Hell. Well learn about Samuel Coltâs Hellgate, which can ironically be unlocked with the Magic Kill Anything Gun (the Colt). In retrospect, this was just the beginning of the larger narrative arc of the Apocalypse, where Azazel released Lilith (along with a lot of other demons) to get that party started now that they had their hooks in Deanâs soul, but hey, at least Azazel wonât live to see it all happen (Dean finally shoots him with that last Colt bullet, rendering the gun useless but at least it did what they needed it to, with an assist from Johnâs ghost).
3.01 The Magnificent Seven The Seven Deadly Sins, the introduction of Ruby and her Magical Demon Killing Knife. Dean tells Sam he canât be saved because if he breaks his deal, Sam would die.
3.02 The Kids Are Alright We meet Lisa (who Dean had a fling with years earlier) on Deanâs ârelive his greatest hits before he goes to Hell denial roadtrip.â And Dean thinks he has a son for a hot minute (he does not, but he likes the kid anyway). Weirdness with them will ensue until they finally get to move on with their lives in s6. >.> But weâre introduced to our first fairie-adjacent creatures: Changelings. And Sam learns Ruby is actually a demon...
3.03 Bad Day at Black Rock Sam lost his shoe. We learn about curse boxes, Sam and Dean learn that John kept a secret storage unit full of weird and possibly dangerous stuff. But also some relics from their childhood-- Samâs soccer trophy, Deanâs first sawed-off shotgun. And if that isnât shorthand for the fact they had very different childhoods, I donât know what is. Anyway, we meet Bela, and are entertained by good luck going bad⊠kinda the theme of s3?
3.04 Sin City more demons, we learn more about bigger plans they had for Sam, and Dean comes THIS CLOSE to actually considering letting a demon go⊠but Ruby helped Bobby make the Colt work again, and Sam kills both demons.
3.05 Bedtime Stories A pseudo-ghost of a girl trapped in a coma acts out fairy tales as a cry for help. Dean doesnât want to kiss a frog. The pie is poisoned and Dean has to fight the big bad wolf⊠I swear that all makes perfect meta sense.
3.06 Red Sky at Morning Bela again. And like the ghost theyâre hunting, we learn she got her revenge against a family member. The first use of the name âCastielâ in the spell to summon the ghostâs brotherâs ghost so they could splish-splosh each other out of existence. Thatâs⊠all you really need to know.
3.07 Fresh Blood Gordon Walker, vampires, and vengeance. Taken to an extreme. Dean basically throws himself into danger because what does he have to lose if heâs already destined for Hell? But heâs beginning to crack, and Samâs getting pretty desperate to get Dean to admit heâs scared and do something to save himself. Gordonâs desire for revenge gets him captured by a vamp and turned⊠and Sam ends up beheading him with razor wire. Yikes⊠so much for that revenge, eh?
3.08 A Very Supernatural Christmas Yuletide fun and eggnog. Pagan gods they end up killing with a Christmas tree. But they do reach a personal emotional plateau with Deanâs whole âhalf a year to liveâ clock ticking down.
3.09 Malleus Maleficarum Witches. Ruby. And a demon who knows Ruby leading a coven of suburban housewives who believe theyâre just doing something harmless and not slowly selling their souls to said demon. Ruby saves Deanâs life, earning his reluctant gratitude for the time being, but not exactly his trust. This is the first we learn of Lilith, the demon apparently leading all the rest of them. Dean also learns that demons are just human souls that have been tortured in hell, and thatâs what awaits him after he dies.
3.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me VERY IMPORTANT EPISODE. African Dream Root, which mimics the sort of djinn-dream experience. Dean has to literally confront his demon self. For the first time he admits he didnât deserve any of this, any of what John put him through. And he admits to Sam that he is scared of going to Hell. Oh, and Bela steals the Colt, aka the only weapon they have against Lilith.
3.11 Mystery Spot If 3.10 was about Deanâs internal trauma, 3.11 is about Samâs. The trickster puts him through a time loop forcing him to relive endless Tuesdays, and Dean dies each time and he wakes up again. The power to do this is just⊠insane. Just when they think theyâre out, Dean apparently dies âfor real,â and it drives Sam on a six month long rather terrifying revenge mission. Only to finally come face to face with the trickster again after having proven the horrific lengths heâs willing to go to in order to save Dean. Also a very, very important episode. Trapped eternally in someone elseâs looping story and forced to act it all out endlessly? Yeah. Thatâs not 14.20 at all >.>
3.12 Jus in Bello very nearly the series finale. They work with Ruby after FBI agent Henriksen discovers they werenât lying about the supernatural and they exorcise him from demon possession. Dean gives him The Talk about whatâs real, and refuses to sacrifice someone to perform Rubyâs spell that would supposedly save them all and kill all the demons. Everyone lives⊠for a little while, at least. At least Sam and Dean are marked among the dead, so they wonât have to worry about law enforcement chasing them for a while, but Ruby holds this over them (in addition to losing the Colt, if theyâd just listened to her everyone would still be alive⊠in theory⊠sheâs really good at this manipulation thing!)
3.13 Ghostfacers And interesting perspective to see what Sam and Dean would look like uncensored and unbound from the traditional episode format, and through the eyes of other people.
3.14 Long-Distance Call Crocotta. Dean is lured in by Johnâs voice over the phone, believing it might be a ghost situation, and that John may have a way to save him from Hell. Itïżœïżœïżœs all just a trap that leaves Dean feeling even more hopeless, knowing he canât expect John (or anyone else) to save him from this.Â
3.15 Time Is on My Side Sam gets desperate, and we have another mention of zombies⊠which if youâll recall, signals grief and desperation and an inability to let go of the past. Which kinda defines Samâs state right now. Dean tracks down Bela to retrieve the Colt (but itâs long gone, and Belaâs about to be dragged off by hellhounds herself). Sam tracks down Doc Benton hoping to get him to share his secret for immortality as a last desperate attempt to save Dean. But Dean doesnât want to live like that, killing other people for their organs as his would wear out, just to keep himself out of Hell. And honestly good for him because ugh.
3.16 No Rest for the Wicked Deanâs seeing through the veil, able to see demonsâ true faces, and the hellhounds that are on their way. They steal Rubyâs knife and go after Lilith, and fail completely. Deanâs dragged to Hell, and Samâs immune to Lilithâs powers.
4.01 Lazarus Rising CAS GRIPPED DEAN TIGHT AND RAISED HIM FROM PERDITION. Honestly if you donât know the meta import of this episode, this list ainât gonna help you.
4.02 Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester We really learn about the Apocalypse, the seals breaking that will eventually free Lucifer. Supposedly the angels want to stop them from breaking⊠and Dean and Cas have their first real conversation about all of this. And this is the episode my tag for God comes from, âIf you say mysterious ways, so help me I will kick your ass.â Deanâs already set himself up with Cas to defy God.
4.03 In the Beginning Angels can send you back in time! Dean sees Mary and Johnâs relationship, the death of Maryâs parents, and the fact Dean talked John into buying the Impala AND now feels responsible for having lured Azazel to Mary in the first place⊠he witnesses the deal she makes to bring John back that would effectively shape the entire narrative on both sides of this episode. The things we do for love⊠Cas told Dean to stop it, and in the end tells him he never couldâve stopped any of it. It is what it is. Itâs the first instance of Dean getting this glimpse at the bigger picture, and taking away his OWN lesson from it rather than the one he was supposed to learnâŠÂ
4.04 Metamorphosis Dean finds out about Sam working with Ruby to exorcise demons with his psychic powers. And the inevitability of falling victim to those psychic powers plays out in the MotW, the rougarou who gives into his hunger. Sam promises to give up using his powers lest that happen to him.
4.05 Monster Movie A straightforward, black and white case. A shapeshifter (so buried truths), but this one becomes Hollywood movie monsters trying to give the monsters a happy ending⊠essentially trying to rewrite his own story. Sound familiar? Dean gets the girl, at least. I love this episode.
4.06 Yellow Fever Dean vs his own fear, compounded by the fear of a ghost who infects him with ghost sickness, inflicting his own suffering on Dean. This was Dabbâs first episode, and as such, is definitely worth watching for the themes, and what Dean is truly afraid of-- i.e. of going back to Hell and being tortured by Lilith, of Sam being a yellow-eyed demon. The rest is just awkwardly fun watching Dean squirm.
4.07 It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester Sam breaks his promise not to use his powers when Samhain rises. We meet another angel- Uriel- who isnât as fond of humanity as Cas. Sam meets Cas, too. But this is truly the episode where Cas begins to differentiate himself and show his doubts in Heavenâs orders. He warns Dean that bigger tests are coming, but he doesnât know what they will be yet. This is still the true foundation stone of Casâs entire personal character arc for the entire series, when he went from maybe-three-episodes-then-dead interesting side character to 11-years-and-counting truly a Winchester.
4.08 Wishful Thinking I love this episode⊠you canât just wish for what you want without consequences. This was like primer-level Cosmic Consequences stuff.
4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer Dean learns what Sam was up to while he was in Hell being tortured by Alastair (conveniently the antagonist in this episode), why he trusts Ruby now, and voluntarily works with Ruby to save Anna-- a woman who hears angels talking. This is effectively continued in:
4.10 Heaven and Hell Where Anna remembers that sheâd been an angel who fell from Heaven by choice, removing her grace to experience life as a human. Which⊠is kinda important a concept to know exists⊠>.> Heaven (and Cas) judge her harshly for that choice, and yet⊠thereâs just too much just go read my rewatch notes from this episode at the very least.
4.11 Family Remains They think itâs a ghost but itâs not a ghost. All you need to know is this is the episode they wrote on a dare to see if they could write an episode that the network would refuse to air ever again. They were actively trying to write the worst possible episode they could imagine, and this is the result.
4.12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag
Sam had a thing for stage magic as a kid, but now he runs around with a demon. The concept of âwill we be in this life until we die or it kills usâ and âwhat would life even look like to us if we were actually to grow oldâ is batted around for possibly the first time.Â
4.13 After School Special
From contemplating retirement to flashbacks to high school. Another look at Sam and Dean and who they are as people, and how their very different childhoods shaped them into who they are now.
4.14 Sex and Violence Deanâs Siren was a dude. (oh, and the director of this episode? whose last episode was 6.15? is directing 15.03, so maybe worth a peek...)
4.15 Death Takes a Holiday Dean vs Death again. The return of Tessa the reaper from 2.01, and Dean finally remembers. They save Tessa, save a seal, and capture Alastair, but discover theyâve been manipulated into doing it by Cas/Heaven. Heaven loves its manipulations⊠Pamela the psychic warns Sam that what heâs doing, despite his intentions, is not good. He ignores that advice. At the very least read my rewatch notes for this one. >.>
4.16 On the Head of a Pin There is absolutely too much going on in this episode to sum up in this post. Read my rewatch notes, read the superwiki, watch the episode. This one is huge, for Dean and for Cas.
4.17 It's a Terrible Life Heavenâs Grand Manipulator, Zachariah. Or he thinks heâs pretty grand⊠heâs really not all that good at his job
4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book CHUCK. The inevitability of destiny, or at least his attempt to write that version. In this episode, all of Chuckâs plans go according to plan⊠until Dean drags him back into the story and forces a different ending. (and we learn Samâs demon blood drinking is so distasteful to Chuck he didnât even include it in his books) Remind you of anything? Like, oh, 4.22, or 5.22, or 11.23, or 14.20? Yes, this episode is the key to everything.
4.19 Jump the Shark Since Adam will reportedly be back in s15, watch this one and understand Dabbâs exact intention in creating the character in the first place-- literally as a decoy who never existed with any narrative weight of his own, as a ghoul (a creature that feeds on the dead and takes their shape). I wrote about this one recently, so I wonât waste space repeating myself here.
4.20 The Rapture CAAAAAAAASSSSSS. He gets dragged back to heaven for disobedience, and is tortured back into obedience. Obviously this one is huge for Cas as a character, and for Deanâs relationship with him. But they both learn about why Samâs powers were getting stronger, and are not pleased...
4.21 When the Levee Breaks Samâs detoxing from demon blood until Cas lets him escape. Cas rounds up Anna and has her sent back to Heaven for her own round of torture/reprogramming. And Dean and Sam have her Big Falling Out that drives Sam to do the horrific⊠however good his intentions are, what heâs doing is still bad.
4.22 Lucifer Rising The grand manipulation is unveiled. Dean talks an angel into rebelling from Heaven to stop the apocalypse, but theyâre still not in time to stop Sam from breaking the world. Chuck⊠is less than fully helpful, despite Cas literally volunteering his own life to protect Chuck. Pretty sure this is a critical episode for rewatching. Chuckâs mostly pleased his story is going to plan.
5.01 Sympathy for the Devil Ugh, no we do not have sympathy for the devil on this blog. Chuck recruits his biggest fan to deliver cryptic messages to Sam and Dean. Dean learns heâs Michaelâs true vessel, destined to be his tuxedo for the apocalypse. Cas returns without having a clue how heâs even alive. And itâs all Chuckâs doing⊠even if we donât know that yet.
5.02 Good God, Y'All
The apocalypse is in full swing, and the Horsemen are coming out to play. In this case, War manipulating people into destroying each other. Cas sets out on his mission to find God and convince him to help stop this mess. We learn Deanâs amulet had the power to find God all this time, and theyâd never known it until now. Convenient!
5.03 Free to Be You and Me Just watch it already, you know you want to. Defines Dean and Casâs relationship for years to come, though. Plus Sam learns heâs Luciferâs destined vessel. Iâm sure that will all go fineâŠÂ
5.04 The End I know most people will disagree with me on this, but the only useful meta takeaway from this episode is the same as one from 4.17: Dean doesnât learn the lessons heâs âsupposed to.â He makes his own lessons. There is literally zero other relevant information to take from this episode, aside from it being Cas who saves him from it. Watch if you enjoy it⊠but literally nothing about it is any more real than the djinn dream in 2.20 or the dreamroot dream in 3.10, and itâs all been rendered irrelevant by later canon anyway. Especially by 14.20 and that moment Dean refused to play Chuckâs game anymore.
5.05 Fallen Idols More John baggage disguised as an old god. Worth watching just to hear poor Consuela the housekeeper wail about Abraham Lincoln killing Mr. Hill, and Sam being attacked by Ghandi.
5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future Dabbâs second gag on the fandom⊠the antichrist. Dean admitting Cas is his friend. :â)
5.07 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester Dean gets to be an old man for a day.
5.08 Changing Channels Just watch this one, read about it, whatever. Refresh yourself on it. The trickster is unmasked as the Archangel Gabriel, and heâs attempting his own ploy to force Sam and Dean to âplay their roles.â They convince him theyâre not gonna do that, but to break out of the endless loop of literal television shows heâs forcing them to act out for his own entertainment (and sort of to teach them that lesson), theyâve got to do more than just refuse to play their roles, theyâve got to best him at the game. Kinda like theyâre probably gonna have to do with Chuck in s15.Â
5.09 The Real Ghostbusters Oh, speaking of Chuck⊠here have a Supernatural fan convention, and a key piece of information on what actually happened to the Colt after Bela stole it. But most importantly, Dean gets to yell about how much he doesnât appreciate the story of Supernatural.
5.10 Abandon All Hope⊠They find the Colt, and Crowley, and discover it never wouldâve worked against Lucifer anyway, and then promptly lose the Colt again. Lucifer gets to stare down Cas and Cas doesnât blink, Megâs hellhounds kill Jo and Ellen, and really everythingâs kinda bleak. Lucifer raises and binds Death.
5.11 Sam, Interrupted WRAITH, aka a monster that uses mind altering venom to âcookâ her victims to perfection, so like a djinn and other mind-altering, perception-altering creatures, when they sneak up on you unawares, things get⊠complicated. Massive insight into the essential character of Sam and Dean.
5.12 Swap Meat Body Swap. That one time Sam was actually Gary.
5.13 The Song Remains the Same More time travel, Samâs second resurrection, we finally meet Michael face to (Young John Winchesterâs) face. Mikey seems pretty confident in his âdestiny.â Deanâs second warning to Young Mary about her death is wiped from her mind. Contemplation of Cosmic Consequences: itâs better never to be born if it means stopping the Apcoalypse-- clarified in 12.23-present that⊠nope, definitely worse. âTeam Free Willâ coined. Watch this one. Itâs the stage on which all the s12-present Family Dynamics will be set.
5.14 My Bloody Valentine We learn Heaven set up John and Mary, that they couldnât stand one another before Cupids intervened and made them âthe perfect couple.â Iâve written a lot about the effect the Horseman Famine had on all of them-- especially Dean and Cas, with the reminder that s5 was the season of âlol nopeâ to the category of beings attempting to manipulate all of them, including the Horsemen. Important just for all of that (and Edlundâs confirmation that Casâs cravings were actually his own, and that my read that he was being a shifty liar blaming it on Jimmy was correct-- Cas does have his own human cravings, going all the way back to this point, that he was ashamed of, or terrified of, or both...) As well as Samâs struggle against demon blood addiction, and his fear of and gradual acceptance and internalization of his own powers)
5.15 Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid ZOMBIES. ZOMBIE PIE. JODY MILLS. As Iâve said above, zombies are grief and unresolved baggage from the past, and in this episode, the denial was so strong even the normies in town were willing to accept the return of their dead loved ones, clinging to them until they âturnedâ and devoured them⊠the Mary parallels, Karenâs talk with Dean about what we do for the people we love⊠this oneâs important.
5.16 Dark Side of the Moon Dabb, and our first look at the structure of Heaven, and how human souls see the place. Probably one of THE most misunderstood episodes in the entire series. Please see everything Iâve ever written about it for reference. FINALLY they toss out the toxic, worthless samulet. (which we literally learn in 11.20 that chuck âswitched offâ and INTENTIONALLY rendered worthless, because it suited his plotline and amused him). Still think this is vital to understanding Dabb Era overall.
5.17 99 Problems We see what it looks like when Dean gives up, loses hope, and is about to do Stupid Thingsâą. Cas too. Probably useful just for that.
5.18 Point of No Return We finally see Cas really let loose on Dean, and admit what he gave up because he believed in Dean. Because Dean asked him to. Dean nearly gives in to destiny, but because of Cas, because of Sam, he fights through it. Zachariah and his manipulations end (getting stabbed in the face tends to end that sort of thing). Also the irritating return of Adam only to be the meatsuit for Michael when Dean refuses. (and we learn the truth about Adam-- that everything ghoul!Adam told them had been a straight-up manipulation, and Adam only ever cared about his mom. by the time he learns the truth, itâs too late for him, the gullible idiot vs the power of propaganda)
5.19 Hammer of the Gods The return of Gabriel, aka Loki, and a ton of other pagan gods Lucifer will slaughter. Interesting in light of Gabrielâs return in s13, and because of the mirror of Chuck in each of his archangels. And the Winchesters win another angel to TFW.
5.20 The Devil You Know Crowleyâs good at manipulation, but again proves himself to be⊠mostly trustworthy (as long as theyâre all working toward the same end). And re: manipulation, Sam gets a glimpse of just how thoroughly his entire life has been manipulated by demonic forces, which⊠relevant to the revelations of 14.20 vs Samâs persistent faith in God despite everything.
5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight Cas is effectively human. Bobby sells his soul for Deathâs location, and Pestilence falls to teamwork. Cas learns the value of a shotgun. Dean has pizza with Death, who WANTS him to succeed at locking Lucifer back up and explains exactly how to go about doing it. Sam thinks he can overpower Lucifer if he gives in and says yes.
5.22 Swan Song Sam was not totally wrong in 5.21. Cas resurrects Bobby, and explodes and is resurrected (again!) himself. Sam drags two (2) archangels into the cage and is promptly pulled out (only missing one critical bitâŠ). Dean⊠actually tries to live up to at least one of Samâs dying wishes, and it basically ruins his life for the next year. Chuck is a smug, self-satisfied bastard who pats himself on the back for a story well-told before flapping off and proceeding to write variations on his original fic using his favorite characters. >.>
6.01 Exile on Main St. All I can hear is Deanâs heartbreak and anger that Sam had been âaliveâ for a year and forbade anyone from telling Dean that he wasnât actually suffering tortures in Hell all that time. If ever there was a YIKES moment on the show, this is it for me. This oneâs probably good to watch just for the setup of soulless!sam and s6 in general.
6.02 Two and a Half Men Deanâs even good with monster babies. And after a year of unsettled living with Lisa, heâs more duty bound to protect them than he is wanting to stay because heâs actually happy there. Sam is a creepy hunting machine.
6.03 The Third Man CAS! But heck heâs acting shifty, but soâs Sam, and Deanâs feeling even more alone now. The introduction of the concept of Angel Marks on souls, the Profound Bond, and biblical weapons. And the war in Heaven, and the seasonal antagonist stepping up into Michaelâs shoes: Raphael.
6.04 Weekend at Bobby's BALLS. Woodchippers trump everything. We discover that burning a demonâs human bones will perma-kill them, and learn a bit of Crowleyâs backstory.
6.05 Live Free or Twihard Dean becomes a vampire for a hot minute. We learn there is a vampire cure that works as long as they havenât had human blood yet. And we learn something really, really is wrong with Sam...
6.06 You Can't Handle the Truth Dean is now 100% positive that something is horrifically wrong with Sam, and is distraught that nobody else seemed to know it for a YEAR.
6.07 Family Matters Cas figures out whatâs wrong with Sam and promptly becomes even shadier around the Winchesters. We meet the Alpha Vampire. And vampire eps are about revenge, right? There is a LOT of shady going on here.
6.08 All Dogs Go to Heaven weird dog episode that I always forget exists between rewatches.
6.09 Clap Your Hands If You Believe⊠hands down the best soulless!Sam episode. You fight those fairies! Iâm still waiting for another fairie episode where Dean can still see them and nobody else can :âD. Just watching Sam try to logic his way into being more human is educational about the struggle to be human in general.
6.10 Caged Heat Family betrayal, Sam and Dean nearly get fed to ghouls, Cas would rather be with them then fighting his war in Heaven. Angel blades can kill hellhounds. They finally entrap meg into working with them instead of always trying to kill them >.>
6.11 Appointment in Samarra I think this is still in my top five favorite episodes ever, and one I think everyone needs to rewatch. Dean and Death episodes usually are. And in this one, Dean IS effectively Death for 24 hours. But there is a LOT in this episode, from Death âtestingâ Dean on multiple levels-- forcing him to make choices AND process the consequences of his actions and how it affects other people⊠this is a big one for the cosmology of the SPN universe and Dean specifically. Even in Dabb era.
6.12 Like a Virgin Dragons are a thing. Eve pops over from Purgatory.
6.13 Unforgiven Samâs soul/hell flashbacks start when he goes poking at the wall, but he keeps poking anyway. Giant spider people. Eurgh. But unfortunately the whole âweb of lies unravelingâ thing kinda fits.
6.14 Mannequin 3: The Reckoning The haunted kidney episode. But Dean finally breaks it off with Lisa (again⊠>.>)
6.15 The French Mistake We actually learn something about the angel wars⊠sort of. We also learn AUâs are actually real. (this was also the last episode the director of 15.03 directed, so probably worth watching if theyâre bringing him back after all these yearsâŠ)
6.16 ...And Then There Were None Monster Possession is apparently a thing now. The last of the Campbell hunters die (that was a quick trip through the family dynamics there >.>). The main takeaway here is from Rufusâ funeral: Lifeâs short, and itâs not worth carrying guilt and regret (takes them a really REALLY long time to actually internalize it with each other, but at least they got the spirit)
6.17 My Heart Will Go On Cas just lying to their faces, creating an alternate timeline just to generate souls as a power source (the specific number of 50k souls comes up, and will come up again in 6.20, as the number of souls Crowley âloanedâ Cas at the beginning of the war in Heaven, with the suspicion that Cas was attempting to âbuy his way out of their dealâ, but the plan fails and heâs forced to put everything back⊠but he does ensure Sam and Dean both remember the entire experience, but we get an idea of the extent of the power angels can actually wield.
6.18 Frontierland Dabb has referenced this one several times during his era, but again, the history of the Colt is involved, a Phoenix, and Dean in a cowboy hat. We learn even the other angels think Cas is up to something super shady. But itâs their first real moment of hope.
6.19 Mommy Dearest Eve uses Maryâs face to torment Dean, we learn Crowley is not dead, and Cas⊠has been doing shady things with him. Cas is again effectively human for an episode.
6.20 The Man Who Would Be King Well this is where everything both falls apart and comes together. This episode makes sense of the entire rest of s6, as painful and sad as it is. If you only watch one episode from s6, it should probably be this one.
6.21 Let It Bleed Deanâs worst fear comes true, and people he cares about but leaves behind for their own protection are used against him. Not just by bad guys, but by Cas. Ouch. Still incredulous that Dean did recognize HP Lovecraft, or even make a Metallica reference at the mention of âCall of Cthulhu.â
6.22 The Man Who Knew Too Much Sam putting himself back together. Cas tearing things apart.
7.01 Meet the New Boss That one episode where it looks like Cas will be the unwitting bad guy and s7 will be about saving him, until itâs really really not. That whole exchange between Dean and Cas about forgiveness and finding some way to make it up to him, though⊠thatâs what will carry us through the bleak middle of s7 and generate the grief arc for Dean in the meantime.
7.02 Hello, Cruel World It looks like Cas is really, truly gone, and all Dean has of him is his trenchcoat. And weâre stuck cleaning up his oozy black mess for the next 15 episodes before getting him back again. Samâs Hallucifering all over the place and finds a connection to reality through squeezing the scar on his hand, which will become a symbol in show for reconnecting with reality for him for years to come.
7.03 The Girl Next Door Sam thinks pie and cake are the same. In their own respective messed up mental states, Sam thinks Amy is worth saving, Dean doesnât trust that and kills her. Let the guilt ensue.
7.04 Defending Your Life A good setup of Sam and Deanâs issues for s7.
7.05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil I canât believe they melted Tulaâs painting. But it takes a couple of bickering witches for them to finally get a hold on the Leviathan, so thatâs something.
7.06 Slash Fiction Aah, going back to the beginning as a trap for Sam and Dean-- the Leviathan using the Supernatural books to lay a trail case by case from Sam leaving Stanford (Crowley will do the same in 8.22, and the end of 14.20 gave a lot of people the impression there will be a similar progression in s15⊠but honestly thatâs really only sustainable for a single episode, but this may be relevant for like⊠15.01-02). Also, Dean finds it satisfying to behead himself (or the leviathan version of himself)⊠so yikes.
7.07 The Mentalists I love this one just for the Dean feels. Heâs really hurting.
7.08 Season Seven, Time for a Wedding! Samâs love-spelled. Mind control is always a terrible thing. Demons trying to game the system and cash in on deals ahead of schedule. So thatâs a thing.
7.09 How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters I love this one. Poor Dean. This is the first time heâs actually felt good in like⊠ever. Too bad itâs from monster goo.
7.10 Death's Door Bobby :â( And Dean essentially falls apart.
7.11 Adventures in Babysitting Vetala. Which only Dean knew hunt in pairs, so hunter after hunter had been falling victim to them, including Sam. Meanwhile Dean finally got a decent nap.
7.12 Time After Time Dean gets booped back to the 1940âs to hunt with Eliot Ness. Still, they defeat Chronos, yet another god whose prophecy will be tossed aside by the Winchesters.
7.13 The Slice Girls Dean accidentally has a monsterbabby, Sam kills her. Amazons.
7.14 Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie Just watch it. This is the only episode in the entire series that just⊠is purely good and fun. Sam has to confront his fear of clowns, Dean faces a villain who was blamed for his brotherâs death when he was just a kid and his parents shouldâve been doing their jobs instead. I mean...
7.15 Repo Man The guy who was trying to lure back âhis demonâ exorcised during the Apocalypse era, by continuing his murder spree. Sam loses to Hallucifer by acknowledging his existence as separate from Samâs own subconscious. Thereâs⊠a lot in this episode. At least read my rewatch notes.
7.16 Out with the Old Sam eventually succumbs to his Hallucifering, Dean nearly succumbs to a pair of toe shoes. Peter Yankit of Johnson Lane nearly succumbs to a cursed porn magazine. Cursed objects are fun.
7.17 The Born-Again Identity CAAAAASSSSS! Heâs back, even if he doesnât remember who he is. Dean tries to break it to him slowly, but instead unburdens a lot of his personal hurt over Casâs actions to the oblivious âEmmanuel,â And Cas tells Dean his feelings are completely understandable. This is setting up the entire rest of Casâs arc, probably through the end of the series. This is what motivates him, his need to repent. And He gets a start by taking on Samâs trauma, healing Sam.
7.18 Party On, Garth An alcohol spirit enacting personal revenge, and despite all evidence, Sam continues to doubt Deanâs theory that Bobby is somehow still around. Deanâs season-long grief-drinking becomes a punchline, and Deanâs literally the only sober one in the final fight scene.
7.19 Of Grave Importance Yep, Bobby is a ghost, been there all along. Also, ghosts can sort of⊠cannibalize each other? For their power? whatever, moving on.
7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo CHARLIE.
7.21 Reading Is Fundamental KEVIN. But also CAS! Is awake but not quite himself and in full denial mode, like he was awakened against his will before he was done cooking >.>. we learn a bit more about prophets as we see Kevin awakened to serve the Leviathan Tablet.
7.22 There Will Be Blood more manipulation, and the Alpha Vampire is back, so we get a double whammy of manipulation/deceit AND revenge. The alpha vampire cooperates with the Winchesters. So does Crowley.
7.23 Survival of the Fittest Cas doesnât want to fight, but in the end he steps up. They get the Leviathan, Dean and Cas are beamed to Purgatory, and Samâs left alone and pulls a Sam. He runs away from reality.
8.01 We Need to Talk About Kevin Dean comes back from Purgatory without Cas, but with a vampire friend⊠so s8 is about Dean making pals with revenge. This will fuel his arc for a good long while to come until he can finally make his peace with it. It affects his interactions with Sam for most of the first half of the season⊠because while Dean was fighting for his life, Sam was⊠pretending to be a normal guy and ignoring everything else. Including Kevin.
8.02 What's Up, Tiger Mommy? The push to do something drives them to seek out the Demon Tablet with the promise of closing the gates of Hell forever at Kevinâs suggestion. Plutus, the God of Greed is the baddie in this one, if thatâs any sort of meta statement on their overall plan to take this particular course of action⊠the narrative basically condemned their plot before the season even started. Hubris, ahoy. But we also find out why Cas ran away in Purgatory-- to protect Dean. And why he wanted to stay-- guilt and penance.
8.03 Heartache Oh, a case where a curse is passed on to others after death? And the original death didnât actually end the curse as intended? Nice.
8.04 Bitten I love episodes were we see Sam and Dean through other peopleâs eyes. And this one, an episode where we learn new things about werewolves (remember: an examination of inner monstrousness).
8.05 Blood Brother Iâd point out the agony of Winchester Secret Keeping being toxic, but since weâre largely out past that by the end of s14⊠*shrug emoji*. Dean helps his vampire friend get revenge against the vampires who killed him. Double revenge! And Sam⊠does not like Benny. But we know exactly why DEAN does⊠he literally saved Casâs life in Purgatory, despite repeatedly wanting to leave Cas behind. He saved Cas for Dean.
8.06 Southern Comfort Garth again, and his serenity is basically there to point out how toxic Sam and Dean are by comparison. The spectre that possesses Dean to leech off his vengefulness has zero effect on Garth. But Dean gets out his feelings of anger that Sam never looked for him in Purgatory, so thatâs on the table to provide drama for years to come.
8.07 A Little Slice of Kevin CAS IS BACK AGAIN! But he has no idea how he got here (heâs been mind controlled by Heaven again, and is desperately trying to make amends, but is literally blocked from doing so at every turn, which is a tidy mirror for what Chuckâs done to the entire story since⊠forever⊠so this is probably a must-watch episode, or at least read my notes on it.
8.08 Hunteri Heroici This oneâs fun, until itâs owie, and then sad. Magical powers donât save the day, they only end up hurting people. Cas desperately wants to make amends, but he is afraid to face what heâs done. Instead, he just gets manipulated even harder. At least read my notes for this one, too.
8.09 Citizen Fang Oh, manipulation moves directly to the Winchester brothers, no heavenly interference required. Vampires again, but this time Dean again sides with Benny, but against Sam⊠who again refuses to hear the truth and pulls another Sam. He forgot the lesson that sometimes itâs not the monsters being monstrous, and itâs important to kill the RIGHT monster, not just the convenient one.
8.10 Torn and Frayed Just like the episode sounds⊠Cas goes to Dean for help, and then brings Sam onboard and asks them to stow their crap. By the end of the episode, Sam and Dean will have resigned themselves to being on their own again because Cas is⊠something is not right with him...
8.11 LARP and the Real Girl CHARLIE! Fairies! Dean does one (1) fun thing for his birthday. But this is about using a book to manipulate events to suit the Bad Guyâs whims. Sound familiar?
8.12 As Time Goes By Sam and Dean meet their grandfather, fill in a huge gaping hole from their past, and discover their legacy, the Men of Letters, and the Bunker that will become their home.
8.13 Everybody Hates Hitler Yep. Itâs true! Nazi necromancers, and another new ally in Aaron. They settle in to the bunker.
8.14 Trial and Error They take their first steps toward closing the gates of Hell, killing a Hellhound. I wrote about this one recently, so go read that. :âD
8.15 Man's Best Friend with Benefits another weird dog episode
8.16 Remember the Titans Prometheus, Artemis, and Zeus. Curses passed down through families to fall on innocent children. And Zeus is delighted because it causes even more suffering.
8.17 Goodbye Stranger oh the agony. We see what it took for Heaven to control Cas, and what it took for Dean to break through to him, only to fall to yet another mind whammy by the angel tablet. Of course Dean takes this personally, abandoned again. Definitely watch this one. Read the notes. All that.
8.18 Freaks and Geeks In case anyone missed the point, we have manipulation and vampires. And Dean reminding everyone that finding the truth is important (letâs not be so bloodthirsty that just anyone will do).
8.19 Taxi Driver The second trial, the horror that Bobbyâs wrongfully been in Hell all this time, and Sam is stranded in Purgatory until Benny shows up to escort him to the portal. Sam finally gets why Deanâs loyalty to Benny never wavered. He was literally willing to die for Dean. This guilt will carry Sam into the third trial eventually but for now...
8.20 Pac-Man Fever Letâs look at Deanâs guilt/fear. That heâs failed to protect Sam and wonât be able to save him from the trials. Fear is a terrible thing. But we have djinn AND dreamroot, so all the false realities.
8.21 The Great Escapist This is still among my favorite episodes, but Cas finally begins fighting for himself, and we uncover the extent of Heavenâs duplicity, and meet Metatron, aka Chuck Lite. Definitely watch or at least read.
8.22 Clip Show Aah, I mentioned this one back in 7.06. This is Crowleyâs turn to use the boysâ history against them, but instead of manipulating them, they trap him (at the beginning of 8.23, after whoopsie accidentally freeing Abaddon because of Crowleyâs manipulation distracting them from their jobâŠ) We learn that âcuring a demonâ is a thing.
8.23 Sacrifice Cas is so embittered by his experiences with heaven that he refuses to believe Metatron is lying, and thus falls victim to the worst manipulation yet. Samâs dying from the trials, Cas is human, and angels fall. (and also some of the worst, most toxic relationship stuff between Sam and Dean, which contributes to all of that, along with their hubris to think this was a good idea in the first place⊠I mean itâs literally what the big bad of s9 did to Heaven so why were they trying to do the same to Hell again?)
9.01 I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here Cas is human, confused, and alone. The big bad is basically Diet Chuck, and Dean is manipulated into doing a Terrible Thing to save Sam that will strain their relationship for the rest of the season. (Donât worry, Sam will return the favor in s10 >.>) Buckle in for a season all about manipulation by more powerful cosmic forces but with all new levels of guilt over having caused these problems in the first place!
9.02 Devil May Care Abaddon makes a play for the role of big bad, but will ultimately lose the title to Metatron.
9.03 I'm No Angel The Worst Possible Take on Human Cas. Mostly I ignore this episode.
9.04 Slumber Party Oz. Dorothy. Wicked Witch of the West. Samâs angel possession gets a bit tricky⊠Direct mind control instead of the manipulative sneaky kind we usually see. and CHARLIE. The Winchesters lives are directly compared to Dorothy Baumâs, where her âfictionalizedâ version didnât even come close to describing the horror of her lived reality. (also that one line swap incident that still pisses me off⊠and pissed Robbie Thompson off enough to write a whole SCENE in 11.04 they couldnât screw around with like that⊠âgod helps those who help themselvesâ)
9.05 Dog Dean Afternoon oh look another weird dog episode
9.06 Heaven Can't Wait the Best Possible Take on Human Cas. Well, while Deanâs still being held hostage against telling the truth to him about the angel possessing Sam⊠and not being able to just bring Cas back home with him. :â)
9.07 Bad Boys Sam learns another major lesson about just how much Dean was manipulated into lying to him his whole life, and another look at what Dean has given up over the years to protect Sam. The origin of my âthe story became the storyâ tag.Â
9.08 Rock and a Hard Place Breaking vows is frowned upon. Vesta. And Dean tries to tell Sam about the angel possessing him, but heâs prevented from doing so. And heâs really beginning to realize just how bad a decision this may have been...
9.09 Holy Terror Cas is back in town. He canât stand by when he might be able to help, but again Gadreel (because now we know thatâs the angel possessing Sam) refuses. Gadreel is lured in by Metatron, and things for Sam go from bad to worse. Cas steals another angelâs grace because he had no choice. And Gadreel kills Kevin and runs off. All of a sudden, Deanâs alone.
9.10 Road Trip Just when Dean can finally tell the truth to Cas, Cas isnât human anymore. They literally never got to actually just BE. Crowley poughkeepsieâs Sam into kicking Gadreel out. Abaddon is becoming more of a problem. Probably at least read the notes on this one. At the end, itâs Dean that âpulls the Samâ and runs away. Which is interesting because theyâre essentially gonna swap narrative roles for like⊠the next season and a half. Buckle up. Things get rocky >.>
9.11 First Born And definitely watch this one. Cas and Sam bonding hour, while Dean goes off with Crowley and is manipulated into taking on the Mark of Cain so heâll be able to kill Abaddon for Crowley⊠(and for everyone else, but mainly for Crowley).
9.12 Sharp Teeth Sometimes family can be a werewolf pack. And Garth is now part of one of those, but thereâs still zero monstrousness in Garth. As Deanâs beginning to wonder if he should regret taking the Mark (just as Cas wondered if he should regret cannibalizing grace⊠which he said made him barbaric)
9.13 The Purge A genuinely altruistically intentioned monster, or at least one who attempted to use her monstrousness for good. But her blind spot was her brother, out there just devouring whatever he wanted and not wanting to play by the rules of society or worrying about staying hidden and safe. Plus, DONNA. Even if she doesnât get to play a big part in the monster hunting.
9.14 Captives We learn more horrors about the s6 angel war from Bart, and pushing Cas toward siding more and more with humanity and against all the heaven nonsense (until heâs manipulated back in DIRECTLY by Metatron and his magic typewriter⊠but thatâs four episodes in the future yet). Linda Tran gets a bit of revenge for being held prisoner for half a year anyway...
9.15 thinman ghostfacers, back to face their own ghosts. If you like getting hit in the face with anvils...
9.16 Blade Runners Crowleyâs addicted to humanity. Dean finds his own addiction in the First Blade. And we get our first glimpse of the darker side of the MoL.
9.17 Mother's Little Helper Misha directed it, and itâs got one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole series (Sam freeing the stolen souls, but Dean drinking and playing pool ainât half bad either). Soullessness, which Sam handles on his own, and learns the truth of how Abaddon infiltrated the MoL.
9.18 Meta Fiction A MUST WATCH. Writers lie. Read my posts. What makes a story? Seriously, Metatron is just Chuck with training wheels.
9.19 Alex Annie Alexis Ann Vampires. More revenge. This time for stolen childhood and lost family. Plus Jody, and the first seed that would become Wayward. Dean is also beginning to succumb to the Markâs darker urges.
9.20 Bloodlines Dabbâs idea of a joke, Iâm pretty sure.Â
9.21 King of the Damned Well, Abaddonâs dead, at least. Time trave wtfâery. Dean is⊠not okay...
9.22 Stairway to Heaven Sam and Cas pop culture road trip. The level of Metatronâs manipulation becomes horrifically apparent. And Cas gives up his army because he refuses to kill Dean. (also Dean really loses it at the endâŠ)
9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles? Crowley reveals the truth about what the Mark is doing to Dean, and we see the final truth when Dean wakes up as a demon.
10.01 Black Demon Dean Part 1. Bad karaoke and random murder. Cas is languishing because of stolen grace, and Sam is off the rails interrogating demons for Deanâs location.
10.02 Reichenbach Demon Dean Part 2. Cas struggles to teach Hannah about humanity, Sam struggles to find Dean.
10.03 Soul Survivor Demon Dean the conclusion. Cas hugs the demon outta Dean. Er⊠thatâs what happened, pretty sure. But heâs still got the Mark.
10.04 Paper Moon More fun with Werewolves: Siblings edition. While Dean struggles to come to terms with his own literal inner monster...
10.05 Fan Fiction Just watch it. And read my rewatch notes for it. I mean, itâs about rewriting the story. And Chuck shows up at the end and gives it a âNot bad.â Probably kinda relevant.
10.06 Ask Jeeves Supernatural: Clue edition. With a shapeshifter that Bobby had known about for decades. Buried secret things again.
10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls Our first real introduction to Rowena. :â) Sheâs not a friend in this one...Hannah finally gets a taste of humanity through her vesselâs grief and pain, and decides that itâs wrong for her to remain in her vessel. She returns to Heaven, and Cas is left to ponder how he affected Jimmyâs family (since Jimmyâs long dead now) by his possession.
10.08 Hibbing 911 DONNA AND JODY. Donna gets âthe talk,â in a vampire case, and finally gets to prove her mettle as a hunter.
10.09 The Things We Left Behind Cas has found Claire Novak, and does what he can to help her. Sheâs been taken in and manipulated by an unsavory character, who Dean kills in a fit of mark-induced violence (granted he was surrounded by dudes who wanted him dead, but it was still upsetting and mirrored his nightmare from the opening scene). The burger date. (go ahead and watch it)
10.10 The Hunter Games More Claire drama, but this time she stops it. The Longing Retcon. Cas uses emoticons. And Dean nearly kills Metatron while demanding he tell him how to cure the Mark. Things are getting kinda desperate on that end⊠All Metatron says is âthe river ends at the sourceâ
10.11 There's No Place Like Home OZ. CHARLIE. At least read my watch notes. Iâve been banging on about this episode since it aired. But at the very least read the last round of watch notes. Possibly relevant again because of how it was relevant to Chuck and Amara in 11.23 (yes, this is basically how Dean saved the universe).
10.12 About a Boy Dean gets zapped into a 14-year-old version of himself by a witch. Plus: the mark disappeared for a few days, probably giving him a mini-vacation from enduring it and refreshing his control a bit.
10.13 Halt & Catch Fire ghosts in the machines⊠plus a John reference that is reinforced when a clip from this episode is reused in the horror movie trailer in 14.04 (so skim my rewatch notes for that if youâre still following along for that sort of thing⊠post 14.13⊠*shrug emoji*)
10.14 The Executioner's Song Watch it. Read the notes. This is a big one. Free will-wise.
10.15 The Things They Carried Khan worm: homoerotic sweat lodge edition.
10.16 Paint It Black Worth it just for Deanâs confessional scene. At least read my rewatch notes.
10.17 Inside Man We learn some interesting things about Heaven, Cas gets Bobbyâs help to break in and talk to Metatron, they sneak him out, steal his grace, and have their leverage over the one person who might know how to cure Dean AND get Cas whatâs left of his own grace back⊠Meanwhile Rowena tries to kill Dean, and he has a heart to heart with Crowley about what Family really means. Definitely watch, or at least read my notes. A lot happens in this one.
10.18 Book of the Damned CHARLIE. And the wtfâery of the Styne family begins >.> Sam has a good chat with Charlie about his own life. Metatron leads Cas to another book containing his grace and then escapes with the demon tablet. Family dinner. At least skim my notes on this one. (basically anything with metatron is probably relevant to Chuck stuffâŠ)
10.19 The Werther Project Watch this one. I just wrote notes on it. The beginnings of an interesting relationship between Sam and Rowena (yes that started in 10.18, but this is where it gains weight in Samâs own subconscious). Dean confronts himself in his own vision about the burden heâs laid on Cas (to kill him if he goes off the rails again). Thereâs a lot of emotional baggage in this one, too. But seroiusly-- watch this one for the Sam and Rowena stuff, because Rowena⊠isnât even really thereâŠÂ
10.20 Angel Heart Claire, and Casâs finally laying to rest his baggage associated with the Novak family. Dean and Claire finally bonding. Dean and Cas went to the Hot Topical.
10.21 Dark Dynasty w. t. f. (if you want to be pissed off, give it a watch)
10.22 The Prisoner If you just want the comforting revenge portion of the program, just watch this one instead. Or if you canât bear to, at least read my notes on it.
10.23 Brother's Keeper Whoopsie, Dean kills Death. Whoopsie, Sam doesnât stop everyone else from executing the spell to cure the mark. Whoopsie, that releases the Darkness. Also for people who donât âsee Samwitch,â uh⊠please note that this is a major inciting incident in Sam and Rowenaâs relationship-- sheâs being held prisoner to complete this spell, and literally kills the only person she ever loved for it, on Samâs order⊠(technicallyâŠ), which will fuel the ongoing antagonism of early s11. Their relationship isnât fluffy. Itâs built on this mutual pain.
11.01 Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire Amara. I think a lot of s11 is gonna be relevant thematically to s15, but...
11.02 Form and Void I think a better focus of âwhat is relevant thematicallyâ will be found by looking at Dabbâs episodes and influence over this season⊠Iâd start a rewatch with this one, and the introduction of Billie, who will become Dabbâs in-show avatar as he takes over the reins.
11.03 The Bad Seed Rowena finally undoes the spell sheâd cast on Cas. but theyâre all traumatized. Please at least read my notes on this one, too.
11.04 Baby This episode sets the new tone for Sam and Deanâs relationship going forward. They are more open with one another, and the main drama isnât them hiding things that eventually blow up in their faces like it had been in the past. Thereâs still elements of that, but things never really go back to the toxicity of s9 and s10 after this. Ghoulpire.
11.05 Thin Lizzie Fake haunting at Lizzie Bordenâs house, Amara eats souls.
11.06 Our Little World Cas is clearly struggling with PTSD, hiding in the bunker until he spots Metatron by chance and finally gets upset enough to go after him. Deanâs first confrontation with Amara outside of his Darknado Vision, and she⊠tosses him aside like a used tissue. Samâs still having visions of the Cage and still thinks the visions are coming from God⊠>.>Â
11.07 Plush Donna! And haunted masks! Foreshadowing that Samâs about to confront Lucifer in the cage-- creepy clown in the elevator.
11.08 Just My Imagination Samâs childhood imaginary friend was actually real.
11.09 O Brother Where Art Thou? Dean is yoinked from a park by Amara to have a chat about how theyâre destined to become one and all that creepy nonsense, while Sam decides to go directly to Hell to talk with Lucifer and doesnât wait for Dean. Granted, Rowena has been manipulated with lies from Lucifer in this scheme⊠but sheâs about to learn how bad a decision that was. Dean does get to see just how casually Amara can destroy angels, though⊠which will become relevant it...
11.10 The Devil in the Details Where Dean tells Cas to run if Amara isnât actually dead⊠but Cas is convinced heâs useless by the end of the episode and says yes to Lucifer. Owwwwww. At least read my notes on this one. Theyâre from last week...
11.11 Into the Mystic We meet Eileen, and I just wrote notes about this episode a few days ago. Banshee, which feeds on broken hearts, Deanâs told heâs pining for someone, and is concerned that Cas doesnât seem himself⊠>.> Heâs also asked if he wants to know the secret to a long and happy life⊠âFollow your heartâ (and he confesses his powerlessness in Amaraâs presence to Casifer) https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/186891847375/1111-into-the-mystic-heck-ive-written-a-lot
11.12 Don't You Forget About Me Wayward! Family learning what it means to be family. Vampires-- so the element of revenge, but this time itâs the vamps seeking revenge on a human.Â
11.13 Love Hurts Quareen. A monster that basically feeds on obsession, toxic âlove.â For Dean, that manifests as Amara trying to rip out his heart. I mean⊠this is the episode he confesses to Sam that he canât control himself in Amaraâs presence, and Sam reassures him itâs not his fault. And he explicitly says itâs not love. Itâs horrifying to him, because this episode, this monster, had nothing to do with love, but with possession and control.
11.14 The Vessel What a wonderfully apt and layered title. Thus begins Deanâs s11 âpining for Casâ arc, where his entire focus shifts to Cas after unburdening his Amara issues onto Sam in 11.13. I also consider this episode to fall definitively into Dabb Era. Probably goes for episodes back to 11.10, but this is where that shift is truly evident to me. Definitely watch this one, read my notes, etc. etc.
11.15 Beyond the Mat https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/186962895400/1115-beyond-the-mat-jerry-wanek-directed (just read my notes, this is a Dabb co-writing credit episode)
11.16 Safe House Maybe I should just start copying my rewatch notes here for every episode⊠https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/186963627365/1116-safe-house-more-blasts-from-the-past-in-aÂ
11.17 Red Meat You should just watch this one, and remember this episode isnât glorifying the codependency between Sam and Dean, itâs shattering it⊠Itâs werewolves, after all (inner monstrousness brought to light) and read some of my past notes on it.
11.18 Hell's Angel The first half of the episode is just a lot of talking, but hooboy.. Rowena is back from the dead and we learn more of why she seeks out power-- self-preservation. Worth watching just for the second half, the failed Poughkeepsie scene, Deanâs heartbreak and fear for Cas, and Amaraâs shock that with Cas standing between them, she doesnât seem to have any affect over Dean at allâŠÂ
11.19 The Chitters For a MotW episode, I think this really captures on a meta level what Dabb intends for the whole series. Itâs worth watching for itself, but have my notes as to why: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184690946610/weve-finally-hit-1119-on-the-tnt-loop-this
11.20 Don't Call Me Shurley Chuck, and Metatron. I think everyone really needs to watch this one, just to remember how absolutely shady Chuck was. Basically from here right through the end of s11, if you pay attention to these episodes, nothing about 14.20 is the least bit shocking...
11.21 All in the Family Just like 11.20...
11.22 We Happy Few Just like 11.20 and 21
11.23 Alpha and Omega Do we not all think s14 is gonna end on a similar thematic note? Minus all the cliffhangery stuff?
12.01 Keep Calm and Carry On I can picture Dabb rubbing his hands together preparing to run the narrative in loops ad infinitum until he gets word theyâve got one season left to wrap it up. Worth it for the Dean and Mary and Cas. :â)
12.02 Mamma Mia https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184126233100/cass-flashback-to-his-time-hunting-with-mary-as (written recentlyâŠ)
12.03 The Foundry The companion notes to the link in the last episode: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/187007192830/1203-the-foundry-yes-ive-already-writtenÂ
12.04 American Nightmare If you havenât noticed, Iâm just pasting rewatch notes links now⊠>.> https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184740345285/im-watching-1207-on-the-tnt-loop-and-yeahÂ
12.05 The One You've Been Waiting For See the link at 12.04 (Dean also killed Hitler)
12.06 Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox see the link at 12.04 (Also Billie is in this one, so of course I think itâs important to the ongoing Dabb Era narrative)
12.07 Rock Never Dies see the link at 12.04 (Luciferâs nihilism laid bare, no different from Michaelâs in s14)
12.08 LOTUS The episode that brought us Jack. Well, eventuallyâŠÂ Iâm putting these notes here, even though they also cover 12.09: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184761652205/so-the-tnt-loop-has-continued-into-s12-and-afterÂ
12.09 First Blood (see above, plus Billie, plus Cas laying it out on the table what he will do because he loves the Winchesters... he does a lot of pining for Dean)
12.10 Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets Nephilim, Lily Sunder, Human souls as angelic power sources, the deceptions of heaven (and love versus obsession again). https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184762915965/last-ep-on-the-tnt-loop-today-1210-remindersÂ
12.11 Regarding Dean Watch this one, 100%. But also have my whole tag for this episode⊠I havenât actually made rewatch notes for it recently, apparently? Which is a shame, because we have Sam working with Rowena, Dean riding Larry BEFORE losing his memories to a curse. Thereâs a lot of excellent character stuff in this one, for all of them.
12.12 Stuck in the Middle (With You) Watch this one. Cas is family. He loves them. This is the point I became frustrated with myself because thereâs a huge gap in my hellatus rewatch notes that I thought I covered and apparently⊠did not⊠I donât have recent notes to point you toward for convenience...
12.13 Family Feud Rowena gets her revenge on Crowley for making her kill Oskar in 10.23. Too much time travel wtf to even bother mentioning anything else.
12.14 The Raid The lengths Sam will go to to have any sort of relationship with Mary⊠including lying to and manipulating Dean. Vampires⊠and the Colt, and Sam finally kills the Alpha Vampire.
12.15 Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell between the Crowley and Lucifer drama, Sam kills the Alpha Hellhound (essentially). A lot of other deceptions and lies come to light though, and Cas disappears off to Heaven and from just one call, Deanâs already concerned about him. https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184853801830/still-on-s12-in-the-tnt-loop-and-heck-s12-looks
12.16 Ladies Drink Free (covered in the notes linked in 12.15) Werewolves, and an actual werewolf cure.
12.17 The British Invasion (covered in the 12.17 post) Eileen is back for her last real episode.
12.18 The Memory Remains https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184854556715/that-last-scene-of-1218-where-sam-and-dean-areÂ
12.19 The Future https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184875554515/i-find-it-endlessly-fascinating-that-i-can-rewatch (this post covers⊠most of the rest of s12 and loads of s13)
12.20 Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes (see the link in 12.19)
12.21 There's Something About Mary Mary is being stripped of her will. And Free Will has been what this show has been about⊠forever. And what will be recontextualized in the wake of 14.20.
12.22 Who We Are And hereâs where Maryâs will is restored to her.
12.23 All Along the Watchtower The proof of the spiral narrative. But also the point writing this post that Iâve determined this is all probably neither useful nor interesting to anyone other than myself, and I lose the ability to simply discuss these episodes individually anymore. From here on out, it becomes a weird blur of everything. This post is already over 14,000 words long and I still have 43 more entries to make, and I have no idea how to convey the meta import or Character Development highlights from this point forward. I donât even know how to eliminate most of these from a watch list of essential character and meta points. So Iâm just gonna⊠wing itâŠÂ
13.01 Lost and Found Watch this one for the soul-crushing agony, and our intro to the Nougat.
13.02 The Rising Son Jack is nearly manipulated by the Kentucky Fried Demon
13.03 Patience Our second Wraith. Watch it for, if nothing else, Dean shouting down Sam about Cas.
13.04 The Big Empty TFW in group therapy with a shapeshifter. Cas vs the Empty, defending his life with a statement that he wants to live, but⊠again he is unclear on his mission going forward.
13.05 Advanced Thanatology Must watch for Billie, for Deanâs complete loss of hope, and Samâs inability to âfix himâ with things that worked in the past.
13.06 Tombstone Yeehaw! Cas is Deanâs big win.
13.07 War of the Worlds Michael has been effectively âplaying Godâ in the AU. The first rumors that Rowena is actually alive after 12.23, and Cas is captured by Asmodeus, who manipulates the Winchesters into thinking Cas is still at liberty⊠Thatâs probably all you need to know. >.>
13.08 The Scorpion and the Frog https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184946657745/so-im-still-out-ahead-of-the-tnt-loop-but-i (this also covers 13.15)
13.09 The Bad Place Wayward!
13.10 Wayward Sisters Wayward again!
13.11 Breakdown Donna! Wayward part 3! And the reminder (via Vampires) that not everyone who has a brush with the Supernatural will feel compelled to pick up a life of hunting.
13.12 Various & Sundry Villains Zombie! (which makes it relevant to Jack stuff even indirectly) Rowena! And Sam giving Rowena what she needed to protect herself, which honestly is what sheâs been seeking since her introduction in s10. Sam. Just handed it to her. Let that sink in. Maybe watch the episode. Itâs fun, anyway.
13.13 Devil's Bargain Heaven sucks. The bits about Sister Jo describing the feeling of weakened grace allowing her to feel a little bit human is relevant to our interests, though.Â
13.14 Good Intentions Watch this one. It sets up Casâs special power to strip memories from a human mind, and the results of that. And Deanâs wishy-washiness about just telling Cas heâs wanted, not just needed.
13.15 A Most Holy Man (see 13.08)
13.16 Scoobynatural Dude⊠itâs scoobynatural. just watch it because you want to.
13.17 The Thing this post covers 13.17-13.20, for convenienceâs sake: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/184996231285/so-ive-watched-four-more-episodes-since-my-lastÂ
13.18 Bring 'em Back Alive (see above)
13.19 Funeralia Billie and Rowena, Samâs âdestinyâ to kill Rowena, and Castielâs forgiveness by Naomi in Heaven as she explains how badly heaven is broken and shows him to the door, knowing he wonât stay. This is a must watch.
13.20 Unfinished Business Revenge doesnât fix anything.
13.21 Beat the Devil https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185000752455/still-watching-s13-and-1321-is-owie-but-imÂ
13.22 Exodus (see 13.21) https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185000920730/dean-in-1322-so-close-to-ready-to-letting-allÂ
13.23 Let the Good Times Roll (see 13.21) But I have a list for this episode⊠maybe just read my tag starting with the posts I made on May 19, 2019⊠https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185002926095/1323-vs-1420-lets-start-with-1323-jack-tell and https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185003462010/1323-was-so-ridiculous-i-mean-dean-basicallyÂ
14.01 Stranger in a Strange Land At this point, I think everything is at least tangentially relevant⊠I mean look at this nonsense: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185004920575/on-to-s14-and-one-of-dabbs-big-pet-themes-for
14.02 Gods and Monsters https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185014835950/aah-only-18-more-episodes-to-go-and-48-hours-to
14.03 The Scar https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185016627975/aah-1403-power-doesnt-fix-anything-dean-isÂ
14.04 Mint Condition https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185018115175/im-gonna-lump-1404-and-1405-together-here-forÂ
14.05 Nightmare Logic (covered in the post linked for 14.04)
14.06 Optimism https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185030339610/1406-jack-im-already-writing-isnt-that and https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185030940270/jack-vs-zombiesÂ
14.07 Unhuman Nature (see that first post in 14.06)
14.08 Byzantium https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185042798280/omg-wait-literally-in-1408-while-theyre-allÂ
14.09 The Spear https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185043896890/haaaaa-1409-and-michaels-speech-at-the-endÂ
14.10 Nihilism Not rewatch notes, but a post made after the episode aired: https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/182171684160/were-working-on-the-power-of-love
14.11 Damaged Goods https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185047861195/the-boxes-of-1411-omfg-a-demon-trapped-in-a-boxÂ
14.12 Prophet and Loss https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185048948905/aah-1412-tony-you-cant-you-cant-do-thisÂ
14.13 Lebanon https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185050918250/ive-been-holding-off-starting-1413-because-iÂ
14.14 Ouroboros aka the point where I firmly believe they were 100% sure s15 would be the final season, and began actively setting up the endgame. (I mean I think they knew well before this, but this was where the turn happened narratively) https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185052705595/i-wrote-a-little-about-1414-earlier-today-inÂ
14.15 Peace of Mind WHEEE! My delightful personal vendetta against Chip, the MotW, the direct Chuck parallel who even called himself a god, and who manipulated everyone else around him to make HIMSELF happy⊠like seriously, major definitely must rewatch. https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185074234960/mittensmorgul-once-again-in-1415-cas-is (I wrote so much about this episode itâs ridiculous)
14.16 Don't Go in the Woods https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185056380525/so-i-started-watching-1416-intending-to-writeÂ

14.18 Absence https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185065385445/1418-and-1419-both-will-require-additionalÂ
14.19 Jack in the Box (see 14.18)Â
14.20 Moriah Writers lie. I think this is now officially my favorite episode of the seriesâŠÂ

December 2019 Pond LiveChat Recap - Structuring Longer Plots
We had a great time chatting with @jhoomwritesâ, today! Thank you so much for joining us and sharing your wisdom and experience!
Our chat was all about structuring longer plots, filler vs plot, and the different types of structures that are out there. (Mostly, we talked about how we donât always have a structure in mind when weâre writing, and how we deal with it when a story breaks apart the structure weâd so carefully constructed.) A rundown of the chat, as well as general Pond news, is below the cut!
For those who donât know her, Ashley is an avid writer, not just of fan fiction. Sheâs popular on Tumblr and AO3 for Destiel stories of all lengths, from little emoji ficlets she bangs out from requests (where followers send her a short string of emojis and she writes a story using them all) up to epic stories. Sheâs currently working on a hockey fan fiction that was her NaNoWriMo project, but with 120 SPN works on AO3, weâve got plenty to read while sheâs distracted with her hockey boys! (Iâve convinced her to be a member of the Pond, so hopefully weâll see her around a lot in the future!)
We started off talking about how long our fics can get ( @katehuntingtonâ won with her Sullivan Series, which is currently at 570k), and whether weâre planners or pansters or a mix. Kate and Ashley are both kind of mixed, while @mrswhozeewhatsisâ has never successfully outlined a story, yet.Â
Q: Was My Liege Lord (her longest at around 80k) planned or pansted?
Ashley: It was both. I had planned out some things, but then I got new ideas as I went that I wanted to explore and it padded out the length. I had a whole fic worth of plans, but just the amount of time in their lives I ended up covering necessitated adding things. Kate:Â I do that too. I stick to the plan, but I add soooooo much stuff along the way.
Q:Â When you write, and plan out a story, do you use a particular structure?
Ashley: I haven't written out a plan for a fic in some time, but I was really consistent with the style I used for a while. I would do a chart with the main plot points to the left, and then details (excerpt of dialogues, notes about specific scenes, etc) to the right. Hereâs an example:
Ashley: It helps me when I get ideas later, I can find parts in the story by looking to the left and then add notes. It's my favorite way to plan out a story, especially if I know it will be multiple chapters and if I might not be starting it any time soon. This is much nicer than the outline for the story I'm working on now, which is just a list of events in chronological order (and another list of "things i could add but i don't know where this goes"). I wrote the outline about a day before I started so I didn't need as much structure.
Q: Having a plan helps, then?
Ashley: I didn't used to plan, but then I started a multi-chapter fic and realized...... I don't have an ending. So, I like to plan that out to make sure I have an actual beginning, middle, and end. Michelle:Â When I start, I have an idea and an ending. Thatâs it. All my stories have the same ending, though: And then they kissed and lived happily ever after!
Kate: It does give freedom, not having a detailed outline.
Ashley: That is true, it does make me sad when I get somewhere in the outline and there's something I'd liked, that I'd wanted to include, but it doesn't work anymore and I have to scrap it. Gotta balance sticking to the outline vs adapting to how the tone/characters have developed.
Q: Is your planning method something you learned, or something you developed? And do you use the same structure for all of your stories?
Ashley:Â Something I developed. I haven't had any real training or instruction in writing. I was struggling with longer fics being unorganized and not coming together at the end, so I needed something for myself. I like making charts, so I figured that was a good way to start! lol It's not something I do as much, anymore. It was a great tool when I started doing it, and I did it for years... but possibly because I've gained more writing experience with longer stories, I don't need to do it anymore. I start a fic with a general idea, I figure out where that idea is going, and start writing. I do more of a mental checklist now. Of course, for original stories, things I hope to one day publish, I will still outline.
Q:Â Do parts of your structure have names? A quick Google search on how to structure novels brought back about a lot of different methods for structuring a novel, all with different numbers of steps. Each step had a general idea, like rising action, climax, falling action, etc. I guess I mean, what parts of a story do you feel need to be there for it to work? What are the parts of your structure?
Ashley:Â Having never paid particular attention in my English classes, I would be hard pressed to put names on different parts of my story structure. I view it as beginning (set up, putting things in place), middle (the actual story more or less, all of the action), and ending (wrapping things up, resolution).
Q:Â When you half wing it and the story is coming along, and then you hit a plot hole, how do you handle that?Â
Ashley:Â Well uh... **points vaguely towards abandoned WIPs** it can be rough. I do have some people I work with in terms of brainstorming. And if I get stuck with a fic I'm committed to, that I'm enjoying writing, then I talk it through with them. Sometimes, those issues are coming up--not because the story wasn't outlined--but more because I've just lost that spark of interest that I had before, and it's time to move on, anyway.
Q: There was a question submitted to the Pond by @kittenofdoomageâ about filler vs. plot.
Ashley: I think that's a real issue I face, filler vs plot. For some stories, I feel like I write a chapter and then can't really see what it adds to the story except maybe giving more characterization. My Liege Lord, I can think of some examples... and sometimes those things are cool, they're fun little ideas to explore and that's the only universe you could do it in, so you do it maybe for your own sake more than the story's. I think there's also a difference between reader and writer perceptions of what's filler. For my current project, there are scenes I wanted to include because I felt they were necessary to the plot, but I got the impression from people I'd polled that they would not be interested in those scenes (basically it's a romance and I was going to include things that were not directly related to the romance aspect and they said if it was more than a few paragraphs or so they didn't care). Michelle: I struggled with that with The Babysitter. Almost half of that fic is flashbacks to when the brothers were growing up and how their relationship with the reader developed. I considered cutting them all, but the fic felt thin. Sometimes, I'd pop a flashback chapter in there just to slow down the action in the present a bit, if you know what I mean. Like, chapter X is the night before the big battle, and chapter Y is the big battle, but it felt rushed to just go from X to Y, so I stuck D in between them. Ashley: Yeah, pacing is important, so the "filler" can help regulate that. It might also depend on if you view stories as about the plot or about the characters. If you view it as plot, then yes, you don't want that non-plot filler. If you view it as characters, then the filler doesn't necessarily move the story, but it adds depth and dimension to the characters and makes you appreciate them more. (I mean... I love the characters so much, I'd watch an episode of them just doing chores around the bunker...no plot, just them.) Kate: I just write what I feel like is right. Plus, Iâm a sucker for a slow burn myself, so Iâm not scared to let the readers wait. I like to use fillers as a stairway to the big reveal or moment. What I love even more is to put a lot of foreshadowing in there, so when they read it the second time, they go: oh! Rhi: The thing is that I've found is that filler serves a lot of purposes. As mentioned above it's great for dropping a bit of foreshadowing. It's also great for expanding your background and making your characters more than two dimensional. It also gives your readers a breather. Especially if it's a heavy plot. I often find myself rambling in filler, which is where rereading is key. With longer stories, I have a brief outline of what I want. Sometimes I'll write the major points first, the ending etc then follow up with the filler. On occasion, your filler will end up imploding your plans but that's cool. That's when you either roll with it or take a break and neither of those are bad choices. It depends on the individual.
Q:Â (In one of the articles linked below) Peter Behrens mentioned a novel idea. He basically said he doesnât worry about structure until the revision stage. He writes what he wants to, and then when heâs revising, he tweaks the story to fit whatever structure it fits to best.
Ashley: I do like that, and that's something that @unforth-ninawatersâ has mentioned. We're working on shorter stories that would need to be under 7.5k and I said I don't know if I could hit that. She said to write the whole story, even if it's longer, and then have someone edit it with an eye to shorten it, if necessary, and you'll probably end up with a tighter story that way. So, basically, that's how I view writing things, now. I write what I want to write for the story, and if it needs to go, it'll disappear later in the editing process. But what if it does belong? Well, then it's there, already. And yes on slow burns... for fic, it's a staple, and for WIPs, it's part of the lure, the draw in, as a reader--knowing that maybe they will maybe they won't hook up this week.
To close out the chat, we talked about the story structures listed in the following two links:
How to find your novelâs structure - This article discusses the traditional 5-stage plot structure (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution) and the 3-act structure (setup, confrontation, resolution), as well as some other points, like how characterization can affect structure.
Writing Cooperative -Â Use a story structure to make writing your novel a lot easier - This article lists several structures, and includes links to read more about each one and their strengths and weaknesses. Different stories might do better under different structures, too. A romance novel wouldnât necessarily need the 12 steps in The Heroâs Journey.
These links are definitely worth checking out if you have any fears or concerns about your storyâs structure!
Next month weâre going to talk about Real People Fiction! Weâre still looking for a guest speaker, so if anyone is interested, send a message to @mrswhozeewhatsisâ!! Date and time to be announced!

Harnessing The Butterfly Effect And Omnipotence
Iâve recently been musing over the best and worst aspects of the main entries in the Elder Scrolls series, and as I was recently musing over the most popular quests from them I had a bit of an epiphany, specifically in regards to the âWhodunnit?â quest from Oblivionâs Dark Brotherhood quest-line. For those who arenât familiar for whatever reason, the Dark Brotherhood is an assassin faction within that series, and this particular quest has you locked into a house with five other guests, gathered there under the pretense of a game they were invited to partake in: within the house is a chest of gold, with the first person to find it getting the spoils; the door will remain locked until there is a winner. The dark reality is the five other guests are all targets you are contracted to kill by the host, the game a pretext to have them lured into one spot and trapped so theyâll be easier to dispose of in one fell swoop.
Two things contribute to what make this quest so universally beloved. One is the emergent character development. When you come in, each of these characters has their own background and personality and preferences they operate from which are easy enough to learn given the smaller, more intimate setting and the lack of time limit to complete your objective. These give them definite opinions on all the other guests. As you start to kill them off one at a time, you will see your choice of who to kill influence those opinions for better or worse. Kill someone another character hates early on ? They feel some regret at having made assumptions about them and feel they didnât deserve that. Donât kill that same hated guest for a while? That hatred becomes suspicion they are the killer. Wait and then kill that same hated guest? The suspicious guest feels even worse than they would have if you killed them early, because they realize their bias clouded their judgment. Inversely, kill someone another guest loves and they will become suspicious of someone they didnât dislike before. In contrast, keep killing everyone but the guest they are affectionate toward, and see that transform into fear as they logically become the obvious suspect in their eyes. All of this, critically, comes from the playerâs choice. You have the time to learn who these characters are and deliberately choose the order you take them out in to play on these biases and crushes and fears and suspicions, granting a unique manner to be evil compared to elsewhere not just in that factionâs quests, but the entire game at large and in gaming in general.
The other critical aspect is that the quest is so open-ended in design. Rather than most quests that have a set chronology of steps that happen story-wise toward completion, you are only given an abstract final goal and are free to determine what the particular steps are toward achieving that, providing a toy box of different story elements, level design elements and gameplay capabilities which can be arranged however the player likes. There are 120 different possible orders the guests can be killed in, which alone is an incredible amount of choice, but once you account for the different events you can make happen by influencing them, places within the house you can kill them at and the actual way you execute them, it becomes impossible to calculate mathematically just how many different specific ways the quest as a whole plays out. That makes this quest rife for enthusiastic discussion among players, as it is practically impossible that any two players will have done the same thing, giving each their own story to tell.
The epiphany I had in relation to this quest is realizing that this quest isnât primarily great because of the fun opportunities it provides for evil role playing within Oblivion, or Elder Scrolls more broadly, or in RPGâs and gaming in general more broadly still. The evil context within which those dynamics existed and how that was presented did make for tremendous fun that enhanced what made it great, but I think it is a mistake to see the core of that fun as something that canât be divorced from the evil moral nature of the quest. Rather, those two dynamics of emergent character development driven by player choice on the one hand and player-determined methodology toward macro goal completion on the other hand are the true core to what makes this quest so popular.
This distinction is an important one to make, because without making it we may acknowledge that quest as a great moment in Oblivion, but we go no further. When we do make that distinction, though, then we can start to consider them independently of an evil context or an Elder Scrolls context and begin to see the potential of exploring and applying them in different ways in other games yet to be made.
The dynamic of emergent character development based on player-choice is a particularly important thing to consider toward the future of RPGâs in particular, although other games can also stand to benefit from incorporating such a system as well; Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War stand as especially salient examples of non-RPGâs that have begun exploring this kind of territory. For all the change players can affect in RPGâs up to this point, the influence they exert tends to be centered on macro-scale events and characters. Achieving the next level of sense of impact on the world by the player within these experiences, however, will be contingent on achieving the sense of ability to influence minor characters and events in the way the âWhodunnit?â quest does.
The trick to this isnât a technical challenge I believe so much as a narrative one and a logistical one: that is, coming up with the sheer amount of content needed to apply this concept on a more global scale in the game world, keeping track of all of that on the part of developers to ensure the execution of all the specific parts are smoothly handled, and handling the presentation of this within the game such that players clearly understand how their actions have affected and are currently affecting characters, as well as having a sense of how their actions will affect things going forward depending on the choices they make. It may be practically speaking impossible for a player to keep track of all the specific instances where their choices have had or will have a butterfly effect, but ideally when approached this should be handled in such a way that most of the time it is easy enough to understand where the playerâs actions played a role and in the rest of the cases that it can be figured out with a little effort on the playerâs part, whether from memory and/or from in-game means, such as questions these affected NPCâs could be asked. The challenge this presents is monumental, but the closer to complete actualization of such a system a developer out there gets, the closer theyâll have come to making a living world within their game, a horizon larger games have long sought to reach.
The dynamic of player-determined methodology toward macro goal completion even more obviously has application to genres outside of RPGâs as well, though certainly application within it too. Often up till now the majority of freedom associated with quests in games has tended to be the timing on when the steps are performed. Giving more options on the nature of approach would greatly expand this sense of freedom. Part of this could and should come from existing in conjunction with a system of emergent character development and the opportunities that creates, but beyond that consideration should be given to give more options on types of approach, level design-based pathfinding, available tools to use in gameplay and so on - within reason for what is occurring in the story - to expand that freedom further still. Consideration should always be given as well to providing instances of all the above that are unique to given quests/objectives to enhance variety in general for its own sake as well as give that specific quest/objective its own unique flavor, but at the same time never overly pushing any particular method as the ârightâ way of approaching it. Even the subtle implication that there is a best or better way of doing things within an objective takes away from that true sense of full player self-actualization in their approach, so care should be taken to avoid that, at least if trying to provide true self-determination for the player.
As games - especially RPGâs - are getting ever more complex, there can be a tendency to get lost in concern for how big the world is, the number of quests and characters present and of course the graphics of the experience. It is fine to expand on those aspects, but getting lost on those at the expense of not considering these other avenues of adding depth and complexity to the experience seems to me to be not seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. It is a particularly unfortunate loss considering that these systems Iâve discussed, while undoubtedly able to make good use of advancing technology in games, are not dependent on that to be able to exist. They simply require creativity and hard work from developers who realize the vast potential that can come from their pursuit. I hope as we go forward more developers will tap into this relatively untapped well to provide us depth and immersion in our games weâve never seen before, whether in Elder Scrolls or beyond.
