i’m so invested in your dog meat story! i love it sm, and i just need to ask if it’s inspired by Get out or not? they’re completely different and get out is about race but i just mean the overall vibe of the lonely house on the hills and something being ‘off’, ya know?
also, 0 pressure at all and i’m not on tumblr often so idk about like fanfic etiquette or whatnot, but i’d love to see a short spinoff where the reader gains her revenge 😂 that’s obviously not what you’re going for because she ends up enjoying her marriage with the two, but i always can’t help but feel a lil sad when i read stuff like this. like i need her to turn the narrative around and overcome elliot (her probable trauma from being in an abusive relationship with him), overcome whatever stockholm syndrome she’s developing around kyle and johnny, recognise that they’ve yknow… raped her, and idfk burn simon’s little restaurant down and steal john’s hunting equipment 😂 then she can go to the french riviera with her loving partner, have the baby she wants and have her actually happy ending!!! think im js rly sad for her. also that’s top notch manipulation from johnny and kyle, like? it kinda hurts, cause it reminds me of the sort of trope when the all loving enthusiastic golden retriever boys end up being misogynistic dickheads in the end.
anyways, you are INSANELY talented. i enjoyed reading this sm and you’re a wonderful writer and storyteller. the dialogue and the actions and everything felt so realistic and human like without being too overbearing. wonderful to read.
oh good question anon!! i wasn’t actively taking inspiration from it (i focused more on the speak no evil movie itself), but i absolutely love jordan peele’s horrors so if there are any similarities in scenes or language or pacing then its subconscious, but i wouldn’t deny it as the source. and i can see where you’re coming from with the whole isolation and manipulation, controlling in a sweet way and pretending to be on mc’s side until being nastier is easier, like yeah i can see the connections!
hey don’t worry about asking if you’re being polite (which you absolutely are)! shy bairns get nowt as they say :D but yeah ur right that that isn’t reallyyyyyy the ending i was going for.
and although it sucks, being a little sad for her at the end was my goal!! it’s not a happy ending, despite her looking for the light and trying to ‘accept her fate’. it might not make you feel better but i personally see it as she has recognised that they raped her and that they’re as bad and as controlling as elliot was - just with a different approach - but she’s also accepted that the likelihood of her escaping alive is minimal. i go into it a bit more here on this ask but id be happy to explain anything further too!
however! i might attempt a happy ending au for you anon. it’d be short and it probably won’t happen any time soon bc i burnt myself out writing this monster in less than a month lmao like i need a lil break and maybe to look at smth new before i do it, but maybe one day bc i totally understand the want for her to gain her life and her autonomy back and for the controlling abusers to get their comeuppance 🙂‍↕️
and thank you so much anon!!! i’m so glad you enjoyed it and reading this ask and your compliments mean the absolute world to me :’) it’s really nice hearing people enjoy what i do especially after putting a lot of effort into it

volcanic | wong lucas
word count: 4.5k
pairing: female graduate student! reader x fratboy! lucas
genre: enemies to lovers au
warnings: smut, swearing, alcohol
a/n: yesterday i had a dream about going on a date with lucas so you can thank @god for inspiring this mess. also the last person i slept with was a trump supporter and kinda inspired the relationship... i have regrets.
Tumblr media
You hated admitting it to yourself, but you were instantly drawn to Lucas when he first entered the ballroom. Along with his trademark dashing smile, he disregarded the dress code and opted for a formal, black-tie suit. If you hadn’t known better, you would have guessed he was a famous actor or a prince out of a fairy tale. Of course, his entrance garnered everyone’s attention as well. Whispers and quiet giggles began to flood the room.
Flustered, you tore yourself away from him and reached for a small flask buried at the bottom of your purse. Emergency vodka could go a long way on nights like these.
“A bit early, don’t you think?” a smug voice arose.
You gritted your teeth and brought the flask to your lips, then ignored the burning sensation slipping down your throat. “Not at all,” you murmured, your voice almost a growl.
Without prompt, Lucas pulled the flask from your hands and helped himself to a sip. “Svedka,” he complained. “Definitely too early for that.”
You watched him down the remainder of the liquor, your anger beginning to boil. “Don’t you have to prepare yourself for the pageant?”
He eyed you, seemingly finding amusement in your fury. “I am,” Lucas assured you. “I’m actually campaigning right now.”
“I’m not voting for you,” you told him, a self-satisfied grin replacing your scowl.
Unphased, Lucas offered you a wink. “We’ll see,” he said in a sing-song voice, then left you to your devices and an empty flask.
Before you could chase after him and demand replacement vodka, your student organization beckoned you to their table. Begrudgingly, you slumped over and plopped into your chair. Your table consisted of the other members of the executive board, being Taeyong, Johnny, Taeil, Yuta, Jaehyun, and Doyoung. “I will pay everyone at this table fifty dollars to not vote for Lucas,” you muttered, half-serious with a glance to Taeyong. “Back me up Mr. Club President.”
Taeyong widened his eyes, putting his hands up in mock surrender. “We’re just here as a courtesy,” he laughed awkwardly. “Try not to stir any trouble.”
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes, with the knowledge that he was right. The APIDA Graduate Student Organization rarely involved itself in any undergraduate matters, but sometimes aligned with their APIDA counterparts for events like this especially seeing as most of their members once were a part of those groups. Arguably, the Mr. Asia pageant was the most important conglomerate event of the year. Each Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi undergrad student org sent one representative each year to compete for the title of Mr. Asia. The representatives would prepare a talent portion, then partake in a question and answer session. Other attendees would dress to the nines, often seeing the event as an opportunity to flex. Most, however, did not flex to Lucas’ extent. They were also served a meal to be shared with other club members. After, attendees would cast their votes and crown that year’s Mr. Asia.
“No,” you deadpanned, already rummaging through Johnny’s backpack. “Unless maybe you keep me drunk this entire evening. Then I might consider.”
Of course, you knew it was only a matter of time until Lucas ran with his fraternity, Pi Delta Psi, or PDPsi for short. You were hoping you’d graduate before that happened. And yet, in your sixth year at the university you found yourself subjected to the terrors of frat boy Lucas gloating more than usual.
Johnny offered you his coke upon seeing your distress, and you were not surprised to taste an exuberant amount of rum. You wrinkled your face, but still refused to return the mixed drink. Johnny and Jaehyun shared a laugh as you downed the drink. “If I make you another drink will you forgive us for voting for Lucas,” Johnny inquired, his bottom lip pouted.
Meanwhile, Taeil passed his water bottle to you. An inauspicious clear liquid to the untrained eye, but you knew better. You looked positively giddy pouring yourself a glass of lemonade followed with a solid two shots worth of Taeil’s vodka. “You rich boy,” you accused jokingly. “Out here with Tito’s.” With a grateful smile, you offered, “But you are officially my favorite and hereby ‘best boy.’”
Yuta snatched the bottle and poured some in his water before Jaehyun could get his grimy hands on it. “Petition to all vote for Mark Lee,” he said, prompting the club for a cheers.
Your fellow members clinked glasses just as the lights began to dim. With a relaxed sigh, you whispered, “Hear, hear!” At least the booze hit before you had to see Lucas parade around on stage.
The event went as it did each year, Lucas taunting you with knowing smirks occurring as it always did. This time, you had to endure it with him from the spotlight. You made it a game to send him goofy, tipsy expressions that were often accompanied by finger guns and hearts in hopes of throwing him off.  Lucas, unbothered, continued with his act. His confidence only seemed to grow.
However, you had not anticipated Lucas’ performance in the talent show. The performance began slowly as Lucas executed a graceful traditional Chinese dance. The music suddenly changed tempo, and your jaw practically dropped to the table when he ripped off his shirt. You knew he was ripped, but you couldn’t help but be mesmerized by his sculpted body. Your increasingly drunk mind went forbidden places before you snapped out of it.
Your friends noticed your cheeks burning red and stifled laughter as Lucas closed his performance. You felt his eyes on your back, your head buried in your hands.
“Oooooh,” Jaehyun teased, “He’s looking at you.”
Although a few seats away, you managed to land a solid knee kick that elicited a sharp yelp from the boy. “He’s not,” you said defensively.
Even Taeyong let out a quiet laugh. “You’ve been flirting for years…”
“You think that excessively hating each other is flirting?” you inquired incredulously.
The boys exchanged looks and knowing smiles, a familiar ritual that occurred each time you and Lucas interacted.
Frustrated, you rose from your seat and made even strides to the restroom. You looked at yourself in the mirror, cheeks still ablaze from embarrassment. To your gratitude, you still looked fairly sober otherwise.
You almost jumped when you heard a couple knocks on the restroom door. “Occupied,” you called out.
The handle twisted to reveal a sweaty Lucas, peeking curiously through the crack. “Is it just you?”
“Yes,” your answered with a bitter tone. “What can I help you with in this esteemed ladies’ restroom?”
“Hold out your hands,” he ordered.
You obliged but raised your eyebrows in confusion. Lucas carefully placed a Pepcid capsule in hand, a bottle of water in the other. “What?”
Lucas shrugged. “I get Asian glow really bad too,” he replied, “unless if there’s another reason your cheeks are read.
Overzealous, you swallowed the pill and downed the entire bottle of water. “We both know it’s Asian glow,” you said defensively.
“You’re welcome!” Lucas said, already half out the door.
And once more, he left you stunned and silent.
In your purse, your phone began to buzz with frantic messages from the boys. Jaehyun made fun of you for already breaking the seal, while Taeyong demanded that you respond before he calls an ambulance for alcohol poisoning. A third unknown number accompanied the texts with an invite to the PDPsi after party that night.
You returned to your table to find that the pageant had already moved into the question and answer portion. Mark Lee excitedly described his plans to bring more of the university clubs together for common causes. That meant Lucas was on deck.
Thankfully, the Pepcid worked some of its magic and brought your cheeks back to a normal color.  You almost felt sober again. Still, Lucas’ actions muddled your mind.
With a polite bow, Lucas concluded his session and prompted the closing of the pageant.
Lucas took the stage and elicited quite a few cheers. His frat brothers startled the room as they let out a deep chant in support. Graciously, Lucas approached the microphone and once more glanced in your direction. Without expression, you offered him a thumbs up which he appeared to appreciate.
He surprised you once more with his articulate and thought out answers before you remembered his background. His father, an industrious and well-known businessman in Eastern Asia, likely prepared him for moments like this. Lucas may have been an untouchable playboy, but he was also poised to become a part of his father’s company. Still, you felt a certain genuity to his words despite that.
You turned your attention to your cell phone and took in the options. As your thumb hovered over Mark Lee’s name, you could not stop your eyes from wandering to Lucas’. Biting your lip, you hesitantly selected Lucas.
Within a few moments, the results were in and the MCs called the contestants to the stage. You refused to look at Lucas, instead focusing intently on your restless hands.
You expected to hear Lucas’ name, but instead heard Mark Lee announced as 2020’s Mr. Asia.
Following the applause, the MCs bid everyone a good night. Johnny addressed the table, “We’re all going to PDPsi’s after party, right?”
Looking over your shoulder, you saw Lucas clowning around with his frat brothers, then turned back to your friends. “Do we have to?”
“Absolutely,” Doyoung responded, eliciting flabbergasted responses from the table.
They all stared at you expectantly, knowing that you were cornered. If Doyoung wanted to party, an event none of them would have ever predicted, then you would have to see that through. “Fuck y’all,” you grunted.
A couple hours later, you arrived as a group at the notorious PDPsi frat house with a few handles. You hadn’t changed your outfit, but the boys ensured that you at least let your hair down from your high ponytail and touch up your makeup. They convinced themselves that the night was finally upon them, the night where you and Lucas would finally hook up. Despite their protests, you looked essentially the same. You wore mostly light makeup, but maybe got overzealous applying highlighter. You adorned the same black neck top tucked into a short argyle skirt, but with different shoes. The boys made you wear your “slut shoes,” which were basically just a pair of thigh-high suede black boots. In your hasty attempt to get ready, you barely had time to drink.
The party already was in full swing, and you could easily hear the music from a couple houses down. Beer cans and empty white claws littered the front lawn. A few people played beer pong on the front deck, but they had only filled the cups with water. The boys paired off amongst themselves in preparation for the drinking game, leaving you without a partner. Just as you began to complain, Lucas appeared at your side. “Hey, Y/N, I’m claiming you as my beer pong partner. Oh, and we’re next.”
Lucas practically dragged you away. “I’m terrible at beer pong,” you attempted to dissuade him.
Indifferent, Lucas made the first shot and gave your team the advantage of going first. “Here, I’m better at going second.” He pushed the ping pong ball in your hand.
You considered your options for a second. “You’re lucky I hate losing more than I hate you.” With that sentiment, you watched your ball splash into the back-right cup.
He grinned. “I knew it.”
Despite being a frat boy, AKA master of all party games, Lucas did not have a consistent shot. Still, you fended off the opposing team until you were down to the last cup. Two consecutive shots in and they would win. “Let’s make this interesting,” you offered. “If you miss your shot, you have to do whatever I want.”
With a knowing a smile, Lucas agreed. “If I make it, then you have to do whatever I want.”
You nodded, your confidence swelling, then gleefully watched your ball land perfectly centered in the last cup. And to your horror, you watched Lucas do the same thing.
“Oh, humble winner,” you decreed sarcastically, “what it is that you seek?”
To no one’s surprise, Lucas replied, “I want you to kiss me.”
You saw it coming, but that didn’t mean you were any less disgruntled. In a classic, you-like fashion, you launched into a rant. “Seriously, Lucas?? You’re a robot set to fuck boy mode and I will not be a part of it- “
He took your arm and pulled you away from the deck, into an alleyway. “You lost the bet,” Lucas reminded you. “And all you have to do is uphold your part of the deal.” He gestured around the empty space. “No one will even see it.”
You caught your breath, still enraged. “I was just going to make you find a new beer pong partner if I won. And maybe take a shot.”
“I wish you’d stop denying that there’s something between us.”
Biting your lip, you couldn’t bring your eyes to his and left them trained on the pavement. You never denied that you felt attracted to him. Yet, you also despised him for how perfect everyone perceived him to be. You saw another frat boy when you looked at him, nothing special. “What is there between us,” you asked cautiously.
“You try a little too hard to hate me, don’t you think?” Lucas pulled your chin up to meet his gaze.
Damn it. Sometimes he was too good. With him watching you so closely, you knew you couldn’t lie. “And what game are you playing now?”
“I’m not playing any games,” Lucas answered with sincerity.
Your mind whirling, you pressed your lips against his only for a second. Just a quick peck, nothing more. “And there you have it, humble winner. I’ll be inside drinking myself into an oblivion.”
Lucas grabbed your wrist before you could run off and pulled you closer for another kiss. This one, longer and deeper than before. You couldn’t help but melt into it and wrap your arms around his neck. Soon his tongue danced softly with yours, and you knew you were in for it. He had you.
You pulled away, attempting to catch your breath and gather your thoughts, but Lucas attached his lips to your neck and made his way to your ear. He planted soft kisses along its shape, then lightly bit your ear lobe. His heavy breaths in your ear made a knot in your stomach tighten. “I can’t believe I voted for you,” you admitted, your inhibitions disappearing.
You felt him smile as he kissed your lips once again. “I voted for Mark,” he murmured.
For the first time, he had you laughing genuinely. “In what kind of world do I vote for you and you vote for Mark Lee?” With that, you pressed your body closer to his, close enough to feel a growing bulge grind against your core. Teasing, you drew your hips back and forth.
Lucas soon grew impatient, and growled in your ear, “You’re driving me crazy. We’re going to my bedroom.”
“Not until I say so.” You attached your lips to his again, continuing to rock your hips.
His breath hitched in his throat, and you knew you had the power. Seeming to catch himself, he grabbed your wrists and held them against the brick wall behind you. “I want you,” he said airily, “all of you.”
“Fine,” you agreed, accepting the stalemate. “But no one sees us.”
You snuck around to the back yard first, praying that no one would question her messy hair and how red her lips must have been. Thankfully, you only saw Doyoung who acknowledged your presence with a knowing nod. At least you knew he wouldn’t snitch... most likely.
You skimmed you hand across his book shelf, retrieving his copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle. The pages were marred with messy annotations in Chinese and English, so many you could not understand.
Lucas directed you to the far left bedroom on the frat house’s second floor. You stepped over beer cans and finally made your way there. Inside, you were almost surprised with how tidy everything was. He was a fuck boy, but damned if he didn’t keep his room up to A
sian parent standards.
Behind you, you heard the door open and lock click. Lucas pushed you against the bookcase, causing you to drop the book. “I was reading,” you managed as his hands wandered up and down your body and stopping to cup your breasts.”Didn’t take you for a Vonnegut guy.”
He lifted you, bridal style and tossed you onto the bed with ease. “I’m not just a fuck boy,” Lucas said, climbing over you. “I also read books for class.”
“You’re depth is astounding,” you mocked playfully. “I didn’t know you actually do your assignments.”
In response, he lifted his henley shirt over his head and once more revealed his toned torso and upper body. “I’ve changed a lot since I was a freshman, I thought you paid more attention.”
Your eyes glinted mischievously. “Like when you banged half of the AKDPhi sorority girls two years ago.”
“Okay, that was exaggerated,” Lucas grinned, hooking his fingers the hem of your skirt. “I haven’t slept with anyone in a year.”
You pulled your shirt off, prompting Lucas to dispose of your skirt as well. You were left in just your nude bra and panties, and Lucas breathless. “I find that hard to believe,” you scoffed, your tone a bit softer. “Are you going to tell me you’re secretly a virgin as well?”
“I mean,” Lucas scratched his head, “I used to get around.”
You took his moment of weakness in stride, moving so that you were on top of him. You registered the surprise on his face and let out a laugh. “Do you forget that I’m older than you, maybe even more experienced?”
As you undid Lucas’ belt, your eyes met. Both full of hunger and desire. A part of you felt as if you were making a bad decision, becoming another name for him to add to his list. Even so, you didn’t care. You hadn’t felt so alive since you dated your first boyfriend. Everything felt like a rush then, every kiss and every glance. Losing your virginity hadn’t even felt as good as these playful moments together.
With Lucas’ help, you removed his jeans. Both you were similarly half naked, only undergarments shielding the rest of your bodies. In that moment, you finally saw your similarities. Thirsty for control over the way you were perceived, a love for power, and longing for each other. “What do you see in me?” you inquired.
“Someone who could easily kick my ass,” he replied, his tone light but entirely serious. “I can’t believe I managed to get you in my bed.”
You scoffed. “I chose to be here, and I’m the one who made you want it.”
Lucas conceded, leaning up to kiss you, “That’s true. I’ve never dated someone that gives me such a hard time.”
“We’re not dating,” you prompted. “I only hate you slightly less now.”
“You’re the most interesting person I ever met,” Lucas said woefully. “And what do you see in me?”
“A clown,” you answered without hesitation. “Boo-boo the fool, if you will.”
You didn’t stop his hands as the reached for your bra clasp and let it fall off your chest.
“But you’re also sweeter and more genuine than I thought you could be,” you granted. “Thank you for the Pepcid, by the way.”
And with that, you pulled down his boxer briefs. His already hard length popped out, You maintained eye contact as you ran your tongue along the shaft, closing your mouth at the tip. Once again, you continued this motion and began to suckle his testicles and flicker your tongue as your hand firmly stroked his dick. He lost himself, groaning and muttering, “Fuck,” under his breath.
You loved seeing him like this, completely bent to your will. Returning your attention to the tip, you ran your thumb gently across the slit before replacing it with your mouth. You bobbed your head along the length and urged yourself to take more and more. Lucas encouraged you, his fingers tangling in your hair and guiding your motions. With almost its entirety reaching the back of your throat, you gagged.
Honestly, you could’ve went on like this for hours, but Lucas roughly flipped you over and dragged his index finger over your panties. You shuddered as it ran over your clit, then down to the wet spot you left. “My turn.”
In a swift motion, Lucas slid the panties down your legs and threw them aside. Lucas stared at you for a moment, taking in the sight of your naked, waiting body. He wasted no time in pushing your legs back, fully exposing you, and planted butterfly kisses along your thighs. His flat tongue lapped from your entrance and up to your clit, then down again. The anticipation almost made you lose your mind. He closed his lips on your clit, tongue to circling the sensitive bud. You never realized how big his hands were until he slid a finger inside of you. The overwhelming sensation had you gasping, begging for more. And then he slid another finger alongside it, pumping rhythmically as his tongue continued to work on your clit.
You had slept with a few partners before, but none left you as unhinged as Lucas. The pleasure built, somehow rendering you more helpless to his whim, and its release almost had you screaming.
In your shock, you sat up and looked at Lucas with bewilderment. “No one has ever made me come before.” To your embarrassment, it was true. You either grew tired and faked it or they never even made an attempt.
With a devilish look in his eyes, he sucked the two fingers that had previously been inside you. “Maybe you should have given in sooner.”
“Oh, just shut the fuck up and fuck me already.”
He went to open his cabinet drawer beside his bed and searched for a condom. “Protection first.”
You laid back on the bed, still catching your breath. “I’m on the pill,” you confided. “As long as you don’t have the clap, we’ll be fine.”
“Good thing I only have chlamydia.” Lucas kissed you, the taste of your orgasm still on his lips, and positioned himself at your entrance.
His forehead rested on yours, eyes cast down to where your bodies met. Slowly, he thrusted inside you, eliciting your moans. He moved his hips delicately, making you feel every inch bury itself deeper. Instead of immediately jackhammering it in, Lucas took his sweet time and chose his own pace. He brought his lips to your nipple, suckling on it softly. You couldn’t believe his patience.
“I’m going on top,” you managed, pushing Lucas down where you had laid. Although already turned on, you wanted to see Lucas squirm the way he had you. You brought your folds over his cock, driving him just as mad as you predicted. When you finally allowed him back in, he attempted to thrust upward. You shut him down, resting your hands on his pecs. “And now I’m in control,” you gloated. You ground your hips and then slowly brought yourself up and down. “So I’m going to do what I want,” you whispered into his ear.
He looked up to you, an animal-like glare present in his eyes. “Don’t forget who made you come.”
You sped your pace, willfully doing all the work. This time, you wanted Lucas to know he couldn’t do anything but allow himself to be used. And he watched you losing yourself on top of him, never having been more turned on in his life.
As you slowed, he brought your chin down for a chaste kiss. A trick, you realized, but too late, he thrusted into you this time much faster. You felt the hints of another orgasm budding, and involuntarily tightened your walls. Lucas felt the shift, drawing himself out. “You’re not going to come until I want you too.”
Before you could protest, Lucas aligned his head below your womanhood and pulled you in closer. His hands attached to your hips, encouraging you to rock yourself on his tongue. “You’re really something,” you murmured, obliging to his whims.
He murmured against you, sending vibrations up your spine. Soon enough, he had you writhing in your orgasm all over again.
Still unfinished himself, he positioned you on your hands and knees. Lucas pushed himself inside you, then slapped your ass. “God, your body...”
You couldn’t support yourself as he vigorously fucked you, but allowed your hand to float to your clit. As Lucas increase his pace, you felt your breath hitch. His thrusts became sloppier, and you realized he was close as well. Unable to hold out longer, you came again. Lucas followed shortly after, coming onto your back as you laid there, nearly exhausted. He produced a towel and wiped the excess off.
Lucas fell next to you, out of breath, and nearly exhausted. “Wow,” he muttered.
You rose from the bed, still shaking and legs a bit sore. “I’ll be in the shower. You’re welcome to join me as long as there’s no hanky panky.”
“No promises,” Lucas smiled, slowly gathering himself. “I’ll meet you there in a moment.”
You, still naked, walked to Lucas’ bathroom with a sway in your step. Just to mess with him. He gave you a moment for yourself while you turned on the shower and stepped in. You felt as if you were in a different reality, being in Lucas’ bathroom and just having had sex with Lucas Wong. You wondered if the rest of your student organization would be surprised, but suspected that they wouldn’t. Maybe Doyoung would’ve have filled them in when you didn’t return to your shared apartment with Yuta.
Lucas came in soon after, still eyeing your body the way he was before. “You can stay the night if you want, maybe get breakfast tomorrow.”
You kneaded some shampoo into his hair, and repressed a smile. It was like he read your mind. “I suppose so,” you attempted to be casual.
“And back to the dating thing,” Lucas began, “maybe we should try it.”
“Is that code for you want to have sex with me again?”
“I won’t deny that’s part of it,” Lucas admitted.
You turned from him to face the faucet, and felt him behind you once again. This time, you felt comforted by his embrace. “We’ll see how breakfast goes,” you offered.
He laughed, a low sweet sound prompting you to smile. You let yourself go in the moment, enjoying the feeling the water cascade down your skin and Lucas’ presence warming your body. “You’re never going to stop giving me a hard time, are you?”
You shook your head.
OLucas turned you to face him, descending his lips onto yours. “I wouldn’t want you to stop.”

Rufus Thomas
Tumblr media
Rufus C. Thomas, Jr. (March 26, 1917 – December 15, 2001) was an American rhythm-and-blues, funk, soul and blues singer, songwriter, dancer, DJ and comic entertainer from Memphis, Tennessee. He recorded for several labels, including Chess Records and Sun Records in the 1950s, before becoming established in the 1960s and 1970s at Stax Records. He is best known for his novelty dance records, including "Walking the Dog" (1963), "Do the Funky Chicken" (1969) and "(Do the) Push and Pull" (1970). According to the Mississippi Blues Commission, "Rufus Thomas embodied the spirit of Memphis music perhaps more than any other artist, and from the early 1940s until his death . . . occupied many important roles in the local scene."
He began his career as a tap dancer, vaudeville performer, and master of ceremonies in the 1930s. He later worked as a disc jockey on radio station WDIA in Memphis, both before and after his recordings became successful. He remained active into the 1990s and as a performer and recording artist was often billed as "The World's Oldest Teenager". He was the father of the singers Carla Thomas (with whom he recorded duets) and Vaneese Thomas and the keyboard player Marvell Thomas.
Early life
Thomas was born in the rural community of Cayce, Mississippi, the son of a sharecropper. He moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, around 1920. His mother was a "church woman". Thomas made his debut as a performer at the age of six, playing a frog in a school theatrical production. By the age of 10, he was a tap dancer, performing on the streets and in amateur productions at Booker T. Washington High School, in Memphis. From the age of 13, he worked with Nat D. Williams, his high-school history teacher, who was also a pioneer black DJ at radio station WDIA and columnist for black newspapers, as a master of ceremonies at talent shows in the Palace Theater on Beale Street. After graduating from high school, Thomas attended Tennessee A&I University for one semester, but economic constraints led him to leave to pursue a career as a full-time entertainer.
Early career as a performer
Thomas began performing in traveling tent shows. In 1936 he joined the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, an all-black revue that toured the South, as a tap dancer and comedian, sometimes part of a duo, Rufus and Johnny. He married Cornelia Lorene Wilson in 1940, at a service officiated by Rev. C. L. Franklin, the father of Aretha Franklin, and the couple settled in Memphis. Thomas worked a day job in the American Finishing Company textile bleaching plant, which he continued to do for over 20 years. He also formed a comedy and dancing duo, Rufus and Bones, with Robert "Bones" Couch, and they took over as MCs at the Palace Theater, often presenting amateur hour shows. One early winner was B.B. King, and others discovered by Thomas later in the 1940s included Bobby Bland and Johnny Ace.
In the early 1940s, Thomas began writing and performing his own songs. He regarded Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Gatemouth Moore as musical influences. He made his professional singing debut at the Elks Club on Beale Street, filling in for another singer at the last minute, and during the 1940s became a regular performer in Memphis nightclubs, such as Currie's Club Tropicana. As an established performer in Memphis, aged 33 in 1950, Thomas recorded his first 78 rpm single, for Jesse Erickson's small Star Talent label in Dallas, Texas. Thomas said, "I just wanted to make a record. I never thought of getting rich. I just wanted to be known, be a recording artist. . . . [But] the record sold five copies and I bought four of them." The record, "I'll Be a Good Boy" backed with "I'm So Worried", gained a Billboard review, which stated that "Thomas shows first class style on a slow blues". He also recorded for the Bullet label in Nashville, Tennessee, when he recorded with Bobby Plater's Orchestra and was credited as "Mr. Swing"; the recordings were not recognised by researchers as being by Thomas until 1996. In 1951 he made his first recordings at Sam Phillips's Sun Studio, for the Chess label, but they were not commercially successful.
He began working as a DJ at radio station WDIA in 1951, and hosted an afternoon R&B show called Hoot and Holler. WDIA, featuring an African-American format, was known as "the mother station of the Negroes" and became an important source of blues and R&B music for a generation, its audience consisting of white as well as black listeners. Thomas used to introduce his shows saying, "I'm young, I'm loose, I'm full of juice, I got the goose so what's the use. We're feeling gay though we ain't got a dollar, Rufus is here, so hoot and holler." He also used to lead tours of white teenagers on "midnight rambles" around Beale Street.
His celebrity in the South was such that in 1953, at Sam Phillips's suggestion, he recorded "Bear Cat" for Sun Records, an "answer record" to Big Mama Thornton's R&B hit "Hound Dog". The record became the label's first national chart hit, reaching number 3 on the Billboard R&B chart. However, a copyright-infringement suit brought by Don Robey, the original publisher of "Hound Dog", nearly bankrupted the record label. After only one recording there, Thomas was one of the African-American artists released by Phillips, as he oriented his label more toward white audiences and signed Elvis Presley, who later recorded Thomas's song "Tiger Man". Thomas did not record again until 1956, when he made a single, "I'm Steady Holdin' On", for the Bihari brothers' Meteor label; musicians on the record included Lewie Steinberg, later a founding member of Booker T and the MGs.
Stax Records
In 1960 he made his first recordings with his 17-year-old daughter Carla, for the Satellite label in Memphis, which changed its name to Stax the following year. The song, "Cause I Love You", featuring a rhythm borrowed from Jesse Hill's "Ooh Poo Pa Doo", was a regional hit; the musicians included Thomas' son Marvell on keyboards, Steinberg, and the 16-year-old Booker T. Jones. The record's success led to Stax gaining production and distribution deal with the much larger Atlantic Records.
Rufus Thomas continued to record for the label after Carla's record "Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)" reached the national R&B chart in 1961. He had his own hit with "The Dog", a song he had originally improvised in performance based on a Willie Mitchell bass line, complete with imitations of a barking dog. The 1963 follow-up, "Walking the Dog", engineered by Tom Dowd of Atlantic, became one of his most successful records, reaching #10 on the Billboard pop chart. He became the first, and still the only, father to debut in the Top 10 after his daughter had first appeared there. The song was recorded in early 1964 by the Rolling Stones on their debut album, and was a minor UK chart hit for Merseybeat group the Dennisons later that year.
As well as recording and appearing on radio and in clubs, Thomas continued to work as a boiler operator in the textile plant, where he claimed the noises sometimes suggested musical rhythms and lyrics to him, before he finally gave up the job in 1963, to focus on his role as a singer and entertainer. He recorded a series of novelty dance tracks, including "Can Your Monkey Do the Dog'" and '"Somebody Stole My Dog" for Stax, where he was often backed by Booker T. & the MGs or the Bar-Kays. He also became a mentor to younger Stax stars, giving advice on stage moves to performers like Otis Redding, who partnered daughter Carla on record.
After "Jump Back" in 1964, the hits dried up for several years, as Stax gave more attention to younger artists and musicians. However, in 1970 he had another big hit with "Do the Funky Chicken", which reached #5 on the R&B chart, #28 on the pop chart, and #18 in Britain where it was his only chart hit. Thomas improvised the song while performing with Willie Mitchell's band at a club in Covington, Tennessee, including a spoken word section that he regularly used as a shtick as a radio DJ: "Oh I feel so unnecessary - this is the kind of stuff that makes you feel like you wanna do something nasty, like waste some chicken gravy on your white shirt right down front." The recording was produced by Al Bell and Tom Nixon, and used the Bar-Kays, featuring guitarist Michael Toles. Thomas continued to work with Bell and Nixon as producers, and later in 1970 had his only number 1 R&B hit [and his second-highest pop charting record] with another dance song, "Do the Push and Pull". A further dance-oriented release in 1971, "The Breakdown", climbed to number 2 R&B and number 31 Pop. In 1972, he featured in the Wattstax concert, and he had several further, less successful, hits before Stax collapsed in 1976.
Later career
Thomas continued to record and toured internationally, billing himself as "The World's Oldest Teenager" and describing himself as "the funkiest man alive". He "drew upon his vaudeville background to put [his songs] over on stage with fancy footwork that displayed remarkable agility for a man well into his fifties", and usually performed "while clothed in a wardrobe of hot pants, boots and capes, all in wild colors."
He continued as a DJ at WDIA until 1974, and worked for a period at WLOK before returning to WDIA in the mid 1980s to co-host a blues show. He appeared regularly on television and recorded albums for various labels. Thomas performed regularly at the Porretta Soul Festival in Italy; the outdoor amphitheater in which he performed was later renamed Rufus Thomas Park.
He played an important part in the Stax reunion of 1988, and appeared in Jim Jarmusch's 1989 film Mystery Train, Robert Altman's 1999 film Cookie's Fortune, and D. A. Pennebaker’s documentary Only the Strong Survive. Thomas released an album of straight-ahead blues, That Woman is Poison!, with Alligator Records in 1990, featuring saxophonist Noble "Thin Man" Watts. In 1996, he and William Bell headlined at the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1997, he released an album, Rufus Live!, on Ecko Records. In 1998, he hosted two New Year's Eve shows on Beale Street.
In 1997, to commemorate his 80th birthday, the City of Memphis renamed a road off Beale Street, close to the old Palace Theater, as Rufus Thomas Boulevard. He received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1992, and a lifetime achievement award from ASCAP in 1997. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.
Death and legacy
He died of heart failure in 2001, at the age of 84, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He is buried next to his wife Lorene, who pre-deceased him in 2000, at the New Park Cemetery in Memphis.
Writer Peter Guralnick said of him:
His music... brought a great deal of joy to the world, but his personality brought even more, conveying a message of grit, determination, indomitability, above all a bottomless appreciation for the human comedy that left little room for the drab or the dreary in his presence.
Thomas was honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in Byhalia.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Rufus Thomas among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
In popular culture
Bobby Brown portrays Thomas in the BET television series American Soul.

That time when Chenle and Hyuck relentlessly pushed away members in NCT Dream School Mate to win the game. “yEA ChEnLE BaBY”
he’s actually so thoughtful, he bought a radio just because Johnny and Jaehyun host a radio show to show how much he loves and supports them
when he was singing “baby don’t like it” live on NCT night night but forgot the lyrics it was so cute? (not to mention how blessed his voice was)
kept dancing to other groups choreos instead of their own when dreamies were doing the let’s dance and mark got so frustrated
NCT 127 on Ah!Nimdle where he kept rushing to the front to answer questions about the members by “giving up on looking handsome” (we’d all do it for food thanks)
his commentary on the soccer vlive he did with Jisung and Jungwoo and Yuta! (sm he’s so talented look)
he cuddles people in his sleep which is why he wanted to room with Jeno because he’s comfortable with him but when Jeno exposed hyuck he got so so so so so shy owo
In general he’s such an amazingly talented and wonderful person. He deserves so much more love and I just wish he’d get the appreciation he deserves because even through all the hardships he manages to stay the fullsun we all know and love.

Apart, Then Together Again; [Lee Taeyong]
Prompt: You and Taeyong make up after taking a break.
Genre: hurt/comfort, romance, angst
Warning(s): smut
Word Count: 3.7k
Not to your surprise, but you spend what is supposed to be your anniversary with Taeyong, thinking about Taeyong. You reminisce about how happy you had been when the two of you were together. How miserable you were now that you had spent so much time apart. Where not seeing him wasn’t anything new, having no words exchanged was. The longest you had gone without physical contact had been two and a half months, but until recently the longest you had gone without speaking to him was a week. A busy schedule rarely kept you from sparking a conversation.
Sadly, the image of Taeyong that you conjure up is of him frowning at you like a wet cat, and you were the one who threw him in the bath. The crease in his brow looked as if it were etched into stone, a permanent fixture. Had you really ruined everything you worked so hard to maintain with Taeyong? Were the nights spent checking in on him and reassuring him of your feelings despite his absence pointless? His struggling to find times for you to have secret meetings and rushed lunch dates useless? It was likely, you mused, but as you pick up your phone and swipe to call him, you hope that is not the case.
You call three times before he picks up. He’s monotone and short with all of his replies, but he does tell you he has time to spare later in the evening. You tell him you will come to the dorms and that you are happy he agreed meeting. He hangs up first. Your phone buzzes in your palm minutes later, causing you to lose your bubble popping game.
Flipping through channels on your small television you at last find the channel your friend told you to tune in to. On screen are two young MCs, casual in their looks despite the groups dressed to the nines behind them. Among them you quickly pick out NCT U with their black ensembles and red accessories. So that was why he took so long in picking up your call. That was why he denied meeting you in an hour’s time. He had been performing. He wasn’t just ignoring you again.
You keep the program on for background noise as you continue your game, only pausing to see the winners let out joyous shouts and thank their fans. Taeyong smiles politely, but you note he looks troubled. He’s usually genuinely pleased for whoever wins over him, but today seems different. You decide against bringing it up later. Pointing it out probably won’t do any good. Won’t better anything, you think. Your goal is to make things better, You won’t say anything if it won’t make your situation have a better outcome, you promise yourself.
One of the kids from Dream ushers you inside, he greets you politely before scampering away. You can hear a loud bunch of them off in someone’s room, arguing about someone cheating on a game. Mark enters your vision, he smiles.
“Mark, I haven’t seen you in a while.” You don’t comment on how tired he seems despite the brightening effect of his makeup. It’ll take more than heavy concealer to hide how his whole body sags forward, how he leans against the nearest sturdy surface. “I hope you’re able to rest some time soon.”
“I have exactly seven hours to sleep if I make it to my bed in five minutes.” He waves after leading you to Taeyong and Johnny’s room.
You knock and Johnny is mid stretch when you enter, you catch a peek of his boxers before he pulls a pillow to cover his bare chest. “Enjoy,” he sends you a wink before exiting.
Taeyong is sitting on the edge of his bed, still done up from the day’s productions. Half of his hair is slicked back and the rest is casting a shadow over a penciled-in brow. He’s mindlessly scrolling through something when you announce yourself.
Immediately he puts his phone down and scoots back. You sit across from him on Johnny’s bed, one leg tucked underneath you. You are nervous. You don’t want to be yelled at,  no matter how much you might deserve it.
“You look nice.” Flattery always gets you forward in life, right?
“She did a good job. Did you watch us today?” Your friend was a talented makeup artist, yes, but that’s not what you were here to discuss.
You lie and shake your head. “I slept a lot. Wasn’t feeling well.”
“What’s wrong?” He’s sad, so sad, you don’t like it. Maybe he is regretful of what went down the days prior. He won’t make eye contact.
“I’m not sure. I was just tired. I went to bed exhausted last night and today I woke up tired.”
“Oh, I thought it might,” he cuts himself off. “Never mind.”
“That too,” you know what he had been getting at. “I requested off quite some time ago. It’s a milestone after all.”
His mouth quirks at your revelation. “400 hundred days.”
“Not exactly, but we came close. I’m shocked we made it past a week after our first date.”
“A spilled coffee and your broken shoe weren’t very good omens were they?”
“I didn’t expect you to talk to me after that night. I ruined your shirt.”
“It was no big deal, I told you.”
“It was an eighty dollar shirt.”
“Yeah well, I stepped on the back of your sandal and ripped it right off your foot.”
“My ten dollar pair of sandals, what a tragedy. My poor heart,” you feign a gasp and fling yourself backwards. Ideally, your light mood is supposed to make things run smoothly.
 “__?”
“Yes?” You don’t want to look, don’t want to see his face. It hurts more when he’s dressed this way. Perhaps that is shallow of you, but seeing the perfection that is Lee Taeyong look unhinged because of you makes you feel some kind of way.
“I was just mad because we hadn’t spoken in so long. I was just mad because we hadn’t spoken and there you were and you weren’t waiting for me you were there for someone else.”
He's talking about when you met up with Yuta to see a movie. Yuta assured you Taeyong wasn't around, however the older unknowingly slipped back into the dorm for his wallet. You poked your head out from behind the refrigerator door to see him sneering at Yuta who watched him with wary eyes. After Taeyong got done ripping you a new one, Yuta chased after you and walked you home. You cried on his shoulder and he assured you Taeyong loved you despite his behavior.
You rub at your eyes trying to will away your tears. How stupid of you to assume things could be easy between the two of you after all of the turmoil you caused him. “I’m sorry, Taeyong.”
“You’re allowed to have friends. I shouldn’t have been so jealous.”
“No, not that, I’m sorry for not talking to you. That was wrong of me.”
“Stop, please stop.” You feel the bed dip and suddenly one of your hands is being lifted away. You peek up at him.
“I’m sorry.” You know if you blink tears are inevitable. You don’t want to cry and make him feel any worse than he already does. This isn’t his fault. It’s yours, you were the one being stupid and ending things for stupid, stupid, stupid reasons. Reasons you very well did not put much thought into, consequences of your actions be damned. “I’m really sorry,” your voice breaks mid sentence. “I love you, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I didn’t think it was possible but that was just me doubting myself again, wasn’t it.”
You called it off. You had a scare and he was upset, rightly so, but you weren’t expecting his rejection. He made you leave the dorm so you vowed to not speak to him until he reached out. Then you found out it was a mistake and were afraid to let him back in, lest it happen again and be true. You’d both been in the wrong.
He nods at you softly and presses a kiss to your forehead. You in turn dot a few along his jaw.
 “I missed you.”
He hums and pecks your mouth this time.
 “Did you miss me too?”
He kisses you again, lingering. He does it again and again and again until you lean into the next and tangle your fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck. Moaning, he parts his lips and puts a lax hand on your neck. Past memories have you deepening the kiss and tugging at his silky honey colored strands. He shifts so your back is flat against the mattress and his chest is against yours before he pauses. Surveying the area he grins down at you. “We’re on Johnny’s bed.”
 “Okay, then we should stop.”
“I thought we were making up for lost time?”
“I can wait. Can you?” You raise your brows at him. You are shocked he wants to jump back into the midst of your relationship so quickly.  You don’t have it in your heart to tell him to slow down. You don’t want to be separated from him any longer than necessary.
“I don’t know how long I can hold out. Come see me tomorrow, after you’re off?”
“If you really want me to.”
 “I do.”
You attempt to drag yourself away from him but he manages to pull you back three times before you make it out of his room. He keeps a hand attached to your waist as he walks you to the entryway. He checks around before pecking you once more.
 “You’ll come?”
 “Tomorrow after work, yes.”
"I'll make sure its a little less crowded then, so it’s quiet for us.”
When you return to the dorm the following day, you're surprised to to be welcomed by Taeyong, alone. You can't hear a thing over the living room television. How he seemingly got everyone to leave, you have no idea. You don't question it, just silently thank the higher powers for this moment alone.
He leads you to his shared room and you both recline on his bed.
"___, I have to tell you something. I can't hold it back any longer."
You hold your breath as you wait for him.
“I just need you to know, in my eyes I wasn’t rejecting you. I still wanted you, I still want you. After being apart from you I want you more than I did before. I love you.”
You give him a once over. You don’t know what you are looking for, but you know you did not want him to lie to make you happy. It was the first time he had told you he loved you after all. Sure he had said it jokingly, or after you did something cute, but now it seemed serious. His voice wasn’t lacking in sincerity, and he had been staring straight at you when he said it.
You surge towards him, effectively pushing him into his mattress. You press kisses onto the entirety of his face, “I love you too.” One for his right cheek. “I missed you.” To his left. “You’re my favorite.” His chin. “Every bit of you,” he directs you to his lips. “I love it.”
Before you can deepen the kiss he moves his head to the side and forces eye contact. “We could try.” He trails off. “Eventually, we could try. I think it would make me happy.”
“Try? Try what?” Seconds later you catch on. “You want to? You think?”
“When the time is right, I think we would have the best family.”
You remember now what your favorite- favorite thing about Taeyong is. You are on the same wavelength. Both ultra caring, ultra sensitive, career driven, occasionally reclusive. Ultimately scared of failing those around you.
“That’s all we can do, try our best.”
 You both lean in.
“Not to sound pushy, but I’d like to get back to what we started last night if that’s okay.”
You’re fast to roll onto your back next to him.
 “What are you doing?”
You said you wanted to get back to last night.”
“But I like when you’re on top.”
You tug on him into place above you and connect your mouths before he can complain again. He presses closer to you, persistent about feeling every inch of you at once. You card your fingers through his hair before pulling on the collar of his shirt. He’s eager to take everything off, undoing the buttons of your blouse soon after. You both pause when your bare chests are together, the heat between you helping combat against the chill of the air conditioning. He shudders when his hand connects with your stomach.
He moves his head into the crook of your neck. He appears content with staying there, holding your midsection and smiling into your skin.
After a few hushed minutes he turns his head and begins to trail kisses from behind your ear, down to your clavicle. He pauses to make a mark just underneath. He’s slow about it, pulling the skin between his teeth and moving his tongue over it before applying pressure and soothing away the hurt.
You want this to last forever, but in reality you hadn’t been touched for a long time and urge him to get to the main event. He laughs at you and pays attention to your chest to calm you down. He wants to savor this. To memorize what he hasn’t even forgotten. Though you had only slept together a handful of times, he knew your body well. Knew how to pacify you when you became needy and wouldn’t allow let things unfold naturally.
He runs the hand on your stomach up to your right breast, lightness of his touch causing goosebumps to form. He traces a finger over your nipple, just barely grazing it before moving to your left side. His tongue dips out to wet your skin before he ducks his head down to your navel, hastily undoing your bottoms.
Who was he kidding? His way of pacifying you is to gift you your every desire.
Once he has your pants off he pushes himself back up to face you, juts his hips against yours and grinds down into you. As much as your eyes want to droop shut, you stay alert to watch him. His mouth parts and he groans in satisfaction of finally having some kind of friction against his growing bulge. You wrap your legs around him, actively seeking your own pleasure from the way he’s moving.
He bends forward to support his weight on his hands when you reach between your bodies to undo his jeans. He lets out a shaky breath when you get your hand on his member. Stops breathing altogether when he feels the head of his cock come in contact with your slick heat after you shove your panties to the side. When he finally feels your walls enclose around him he drops to his elbows.
You gather him in your arms, hands moving up and down his back as you both relish in the feeling of being together emotionally and physically after such a long while. You lay still, chest to chest for some time, before becoming impatient and rocking your hips into his. He immediately rises and begins to shift against you, starting a steady pace that’s quick enough to keep you from asking for more yet also keep him from coming undone too soon.
Seeing you beneath him gives Taeyong a sense of joy he didn’t realize was possible to achieve from sex. Typically your meetings were rushed and involved you giving him a handjob before sending him off. You were weird about letting him explore your body, and he was too shy to ask to do things you didn’t seem to want any part of.
When you did have full blown sex,  you were always on top, half clothed, his forehead against your chest as he watched your breasts bounce with every roll of your body against his. He was fine with it, but sometimes he imagined seeing you fully naked, like now, moaning as loudly as your voice allowed. He takes the opportunity and rakes his eyes over every inch of exposed skin. He notes little moles on the inside of your thighs and a raised scar over your left hip.
Peering down he sees where you are joined, how easily you accept him inside despite the resistance he feels from stretching you open. Every time his cock slides out its wetter than before and he tries his best not to speed up. He’s finally got you where he’s wanted you every since the first time you gave into his advances. He isn’t going to have it end abruptly.
As pleasurable as Taeyong’s tempo is, you normally set the pace. When you’re on top he reaches deeper and small rolls of your hips are enough to set you off. With him on top for the first time, you remember one of the reasons you never switched things up. Sometimes he’s angled just right to hit a spot that makes you cry out, but mostly he’s just rubbing against your walls. It feels nice, but will surely not end in you orgasming with your boyfriend.
You pet his hair and make him look at you. “Taeyong, I need more.”
Your words set his cheeks aflame and he halts. Stuttering he asks what he can do.
You spread your thighs wider and use one of your legs to bring him further into you. “You gotta go faster and deeper and,” You hesitate. “You have to touch me.”
 “I’m not touching you enough?”
You take his hand and lead it between your legs. “Touch me here.” You show him how to use two fingers to rub soft circles onto your clit. Eventually you let him to do it on his own, and when you start to freely moan he nods to himself and begins to pick up speed.
Almost immediately upon directing Taeyong you feel yourself go taut. Your breath starts to catch in your throat. Periodically you let out a harsh gasp when you remember to exhale. Taeyong watches you all along your quick journey to completion, in awe of how open you’re being with your expressions. Before you’d simply bite your lip and begin writhing in his lap.
Your walls start to spasm around his length, and he takes his hand from your clit to find purchase on the bed. His control slips for a split second and he rams into you one, two, three times before stopping and supporting himself on shaky arms above you.
He’s blissfully aware that he came inside of you for the first time in your relationship.
Taeyong stays lying beside you for as long as he can handle. You lift your head from his chest after he tells you he needs to shower. You wipe yourself off some tissues you find in your purse from your last cold and proceed to get dressed. You just about have your bra done up when you hear knocking. Your blood runs cold.
Taeyong assured you that he would make sure the dorm was safe for you the night before. Despite not seeing anyone when you entered earlier, you knew how unlikely it was for everyone to be away.. They were probably in their own little worlds, in their own rooms, trying their best to ignore the noises coming from Taeyong’s.
You quietly finish dressing, wishing away whoever was behind the door. There’s another knock however, and after you don’t answer, the door swings open.
Your soul nearly leaves you when you see Yuta taking in every out of place detail of the normally pristine bedroom. “I take it things went well?”
You say nothing, hoping you are hallucinating.
Though Yuta can read the signs of what just went on, a part of him is still excited by your presence. He tries to play it cool by laughing at you but he is in fact disturbed to see you with sex hair and the buttons on your shirt done up the wrong way.
He comes closer to the bed you’re on and gets to his knees. Your wide eyes watch him like a hawk, unsure of what he’s doing. He doesn’t say anything about the way your leg trembles when his shoulder brushes past. He stands with Taeyong’s charger in his hand.
“One of the kid’s borrowed mine.”
It's a lame excuse, but instead of calling him out on it you toss him a forlorn glance. “Probably won’t be getting that back.”
“I often don’t get the things I want.”
He leaves, yet you feel the need to follow in his footsteps and ask him to elaborate. Ultimately you don’t. You know what he means, you just wish he weren’t so vocal about his desires, especially when they involved you.
Especially after he said your friendship could remain the same.
Your mind feels back to the day of the movie. To when Taeyong chastised you for spending time with people from his circle while you were separated. To when Yuta chased after you when you stormed out.
He stood next to you on the bus, unafraid to be seen without a mask. He kept his hand on your shoulder and murmured quiet things to keep you from bursting out in tears. In your apartment he sat close by and rubbed your back. You leaned on him for support and you kissed each other goodbye as he left. For you it was a moment of vulnerability. Utterly isolated because of your hidden relationship, no one else was able to comfort you because they knew nothing of the situation. The kiss was an impulsive thank you of sorts that you regretted instantly.
You stare at your clenched fists as you reminisce, when Taeyong re-enters the room. You will tell him in due time. For now, you pray that Yuta keeps his mouth shut and his feelings fade quickly. You wanted only Taeyong, you had him back, and you weren’t planning on letting him go this time.

NCT OT18 Ranking
Hello there! For a while now I have been thinking about NCT and its concept as a whole and watching how it has progressed since debut in 2016. While thinking about I noticed a lot of irregularities (heh…) between members and how it has affected how the boys and the entire group is perceived by the public. Of course, that has been done by how SM promotes them and how they individually value each members’ talents. So, I thought it would be interesting to see with the content that we have at hand, how each member ranks in terms of importance to least importance for SM.
I decided that to have an accurate ranking it would need to be based on different factors. Certain members might have more advantages when it comes to a certain field but disadvantages compared to another member in a specific field. The categories are line distribution (how often they sing/rap on the discography), screen time (how often are they shown in MVs or in the photo album), and benefits (who gets to do solo schedules whether that be MCing/Songs/etc.). I will take the 3 different rankings of each category and then average each boys rank to find their proper place.
Also, certain members like Jaemin & Jungwoo I projected more of where I thought they will be in the future, seeing as they haven’t been here as long cause of Nana’s injury and Jungwoo only coming in this past year. Of course, this is my opinion and how I think SM views each boy and if we have different thoughts that is completely fine. Whether we agree or not on this subject, I would love to hear other peoples’ thoughts and discuss.
*Little add-on: The boys are ranked from 1-18 but there might be bigger or smaller gaps of how much SM values them between each ranking. (Which I will try to inform you when I believe that happens.)
Most Important
1.    Mark
I don’t think this will come to anyone’s surprise that Mark is the most important member in NCT (in SM’s eyes). It is evident in how he has been in every unit since NCT’s debut in April of 2016. Mark always has had a large number of lines in whatever song he is in (title/non-title + unit). He has been able to have his raps and compositions that he wrote published in every album (except for the Japanese album). He has been able to promote individually on variety shows (music related vs. pure variety). It is very obvious that Mark is one of SM’s favorites in general when it comes to all SM groups but especially in NCT.
2.    Taeyong
Taeyong’s ranking is very similar to Mark’s, in fact, the very small margin that makes up the difference between 1st and 2nd place is that I think SM personally likes Mark more. Taeyong is also privileged in that he gets lots of lines in songs, screen time, multiple SM Station songs, and other solo schedules. However, I get the feeling that SM views Taeyong as a person that they employed and someone who makes a good idol whereas Mark seems to be a little more integrated into part of the “family” aspect.
3.    Doyoung
Doyoung is the first member where the advantages and favoritism gap is slightly wider from him and Taeyong. He still has a lot of benefits compared to the boys lower down the ranking but I do believe SM sees Doyoung as most useful when it comes to MCing and being a spokesperson. An integral part of NCT but not the first name they want you to think about when you think of the group. This might sound a little rude, however, another reason why I think Doyoung is higher up in the rank is that SM likes to have people who will listen to them and won’t rebel and Doyoung fits that very well. For example, if something unfair happens to one of the boys I’m sure that Yuta or Johnny will be more likely to speak out about it than Doyoung would be.
4.    Jaehyun
Honestly, I think Jaehyun lucked out when it came to getting his position in NCT. I love Jaehyun and his voice is one of my favorites but, although he’s consistent, there is a member who excels more than him in every category. Vocal (Taeil, Haechan, Kun), Rap (Taeyong, Mark, Jaemin), Dance (Ten, Yuta, Jisung), or Variety (Johnny, Haechan, Renjun). However, the fact that his voice sounds very different from other members helped him stand out more. Also, he fits the “boy next door” concept very well and I think that’s another reason why SM likes to give him more focus than other members.
5.    Ten
Now, I know that Ten’s place is NCT is rather open-ended seeing as the only NCT songs he has been in is 7th Sense/BDS. However, I think it’s obvious that SM does like Ten and values his talents so much so that he has gotten 2 solo songs. Not only that, but both songs came out at almost the same time a year apart which usually means that SM planned it to hype people up even more. Also, Ten has had continuous activities in South Korea and Thailand. I do think that his injury may have caused a pushback with him promoting in a unit or doing more NCT related activities. However, I do strongly think that Ten will be in NCT China and will play an important member in their success. Also, with the dancing capability and performance talent that Ten has there’s no way that SM can keep him locked up forever.
6.    Jisung
You might be a little surprised that I placed Jisung so high up in the ranking and if I had made this post months ago I would also not agree with my decision. However, with the addition of “GO” and especially with the release of the “We Go Up” album I can see the path that SM are putting Jisung on. From the beginning, I could tell that Jisung was going to be important when it came to MVs and playing a main role in them but with the lack of lines that he had, I thought it would be much more “visual” based. I was proven wrong with him getting to go on solo schedules like “Why Not?” and “Dancing High” + the fair amount of lines he is now getting in the recent Dream album. I will say that of the members I have listed so far, Jisung and Ten are the two that I am completely fine with getting more individual shine/recognition and will wholly support as they’re a few of the most talented boys in NCT (not just talking about their dancing). He still is extremely young and has a lot to learn and experience but I can already see that Jisung is going to be a wonderful person and performer in the future.
7.    Haechan
Haechan is the last member that I will place in a more advantageous position before the favoritism gap widens a lot more. I do want to start off by saying that Haechan does have more privileges than others below but mainly when he’s in Dream, otherwise he’s kind of at the lower middle of the group. As you will see how I ranked each member individually in each category below later, Haechan was very much saved by the amount of lines + screen time he gets in Dream. I don’t think SM uses him as well as they could when it comes to 127 and I still don’t understand why he hasn’t been in a NCT U song yet (I WANT THE OG 7TH SENSE WITH HYUCK IN IT). Haechan is another member that I believe to be incredibly talented and I hope that he gets what he deserves and stays amazing.
8.    Yukhei
Precious Yukhei. I was honestly surprised and am still awed at the amount of media attention SM is letting him have by going on different variety shows. He’s a newer addition but of the time he has spent in NCT so far, I think Xuxi is in a comfortable position. I do think SM will rely more on his personality than his performance abilities to bring in fans, however, he’s the only rapper we have for NCT China at this moment so that bodes well for him. It’s a little early to say but I’m confident that Yukhei will be a prevalent member in the whole of NCT and popular in NCT China.
9.    Jaemin
FINALLY! We finally have NaNa back and it has been so great to see him with the other dreamies. It was obvious from the beginning that Jaemin was supposed to be an important member in Dream (after Markhyuck) but his back injury put him out of the running. I think SM tried to fill the void by splitting what would have been Jaemin’s parts to Renjun/Jeno/Chenle. However, now that he is back we can see that SM is steadily placing him in the center position when it comes to dancing & screen time. The “We Go Up” album has been very gracious towards NaNa & Jisung and I think it will be common to see more and more of them in future comebacks.
10. Taeil
Moon Taeil, a much needed but highly underappreciated voice in NCT 127. I think Taeil benefitted more back in the SMROOKIES days with his solo song and the early beginning of NCT’s timeline. It was during Limitless era that we can see SM pushed Taeil into singing the high bridges notes and flashy rifts during the last chorus. While the more main vocal parts that he used to sing got handed off to Doyoung. Which I find interesting since Doyoung and Taeil have eerily similar voices but (IMO) Taeil has the richer color in his voice while Doyoung can sound a little flat sometimes. Although I would like Taeil to have more singing parts + screen time, I do think he’s lucky in the fact that he is a part of NCT 127 from the beginning. Whereas Jeno, Jaemin, and Jisung are kind of in a weird place where they obviously can’t be put in 127 after they graduated from Dream but SM most likely won’t make another Seoul Unit until they have established other units in separate countries.
11. Jeno
I would say that Jeno is the younger version of Jaehyun for Dream. Jaehyun is definitely more capable and talented (at this point in time) than Jeno. As I stated before, I think Jeno benefitted from Jaemin not being in Dream because what would have been NaNa’s screen time went to Jeno. SM tried to make up for lack of lines with him being able to be a MC on The Show and giving him good amounts of screen time in M/Vs. However, out of Triple J, I am most worried about Jeno’s future and gaining a spot in a new unit. 127 is getting bigger now that there are 10 members and I don’t think SM will be added anymore. So unless there’s a new Korean unit (which wouldn’t really make sense since we already have 3ish units) Jeno should try to learn a new language and hope for a spot in a foreign unit.
12. Jungwoo
I believe that the middle area of being important to NCT + SM started with Haechan and ends with Jungwoo. My summary of Jungwoo is the most theoretical because of how recently he was added to NCT, but I do feel confident in his ranking. It seems that he trained longer and with most of the OG members (Hyungs + Korean Dreamies) but didn’t make the first cut so he had to wait for the next opening. However, I think that SM is leaning towards giving him a fair amount of lines and with him being added to 127 I think that is very telling of what they think of him. I will say that Jungwoo is highly competitive and it’s obvious that he works very hard to be included so I wouldn’t be surprised if SM rewards him for that whereas Kun or Yuta could do the same thing but I don’t think it would work out as well for them.
13. Chenle
I would say that Chenle is similar to Taeil in the sense that they are both incredibly talented when it comes to singing but aren’t used enough for what they can do. Chenle does get a good amount of lines that show off his abilities but the parts are usually repeats of what Haechan has already sung, therefore giving the illusion that Chenle is good but not as great as Haechan. He’s obviously not SM’s golden child in S. Korea but I am certain that with the introduction of NCT China he will be an important member. Chenle had already started off his singing career in China before joining NCT so it would make sense to build off his existing fanbase in his home country.
14. Yuta
Nakamoto Yuta. I always feel so frustrated when I think about Yuta’s position in NCT. He’s proven to be extremely versatile by having the ability to sing, rap, and dance well. His variety and charisma skills are endearing and overall he’s a nice boy. Unfortunately, something happened that ensured Yuta would always be unheard and unseen. I’m not sure if Yuta was a prime candidate for an important position and then a new boy came along that SM liked better or if they have always disliked Yuta. It’s obvious by the lack of lines and screen time that they don’t think he’s necessary to grab in new fans. Which is interesting since he is their ONLY Japanese member (as of right now) that they have and if they want to promote in Japan PROPERLY (not that 127 Japan ish) then they should invest time/attention on him. I worry for Yuta’s future as SM has no plans to debut a Japan unit (that we know of) and he’s just stuck in 127, while other foreign members will likely have more opportunities in their home countries. We don’t really have any say in what SM does and who they promote but please support our takoyaki prince who deserves the world, Nakamoto Yuta.
15. Renjun
I personally didn’t think that Renjun was going to be so low on the list but after going through the separate categories it seems to be that way. He has always had a consistent amount of lines in the Dreamie songs but I have noticed that SM loves to not give him screen time. Ironically, it is very similar to what SM does to Yixing in EXO’s M/Vs + live performances. When Renjun is singing his part, it is very common for the M/V to switch to another member doing something or show a specific object related to the plot, but not showing the member who is singing? It’s the same with live performances when it’s his turn to sing the cameramen will start shooting a wide angle of the whole group or pan to another member and it really ticks me off. Renjun will obviously be put into the China unit but with the probable addition of Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yang Yang it decreases his chance of getting a main position. Which is unfair since he and the other China line members have been working longer in NCT than the new three. I’m not pitting the new and old members against each other but I do think seniority should come into play a little bit.
16. Johnny
No one is surprised that Johnny is almost at the bottom of the list for how important SM thinks they are to NCT. I remember being SO EXCITED when I found out that Johnny was added to 127. He was finally going to have his chance to shine and then I watched the Limitless MV… It’s obvious now that SM added him because of how insistent fans were getting at Johnny not having debut yet. After the Cherry Bomb album came out it was pretty solidified that SM was not going to use Johnny as well as they could for NCT’s sound + image. Honestly, if Johnny wasn’t so outgoing and willing to look like a fool for the camera then we would never have gotten NCT Night Night and all the other silly memes we have of Jonathan. He is very much underappreciated and for his sake, I hope he gets put into a foreign unit because I know he is open-minded and will work hard to succeed.
17. Kun
There’s not a whole lot to say about Kun (not that I wouldn’t love to endlessly chat about this precious bun). He’s hasn’t been on SM’s radar for S.Korea but more like bait for the fans who want a Chinese Unit but have to wait indefinitely for it. Thankfully, it is confirmed that we will have NCT China and I know that Kun is capable of being a leader + main vocal material. Also, I think his personality would work well on Chinese variety + talk shows so if SM isn’t a complete idiot they will promote NCT’s Mama well.
18. WinWin
Last and most certainly least in SM’S eyes is our lovely Dong Sicheng. I honestly don’t know what SM had in mind when they decided to debut WinWin in 127. It’s not that I don’t love him, cause I do, but they literally have never used him for ANYTHING in NCT. The only lines he has ever had are always layered/harmonized with another member’s voice, he is never dancing in the center (even though his position is technically a dancer), and for how pretty they say he is they don’t give him any solo screen time. Touch was literally unbelievable because of how much focus Sicheng got in the MV and the live performance. It still does not make up for how much BS he has to go through with being in a group where he has nothing to do. Going back to why SM debut him if they wanted China Unit bait they could have just used Kun seeing as they would probably let him sing more than Sicheng’s nonexistent lines. The worst part is that even if he gets a decent role in the Chinese Unit, he still has to endure 127 for the rest of his idol life (if they don’t take him out and focus him in other units, which I think would be better for him). I adore his relationships with the other 127 members and in NCT in general but I want something more for Sicheng, somewhere he can really shine.

-         Haechan
-         Kun
-         Renjun
Now as a wrap up to this exceedingly long post, I just want to say I am not trying to pit the members up against each other. I am not trying to put the boys’ fans up against each other either. I just wanted to show (IMO) what each member’s career as an idol has been like so far and whether SM has played a positive or negative role in it. I just want fans of NCT to be aware that you can have your faves in the group but their members (that they care about deeply) might not have the same successes and as easy of a time. Furthermore, support all units AND all members of NCT.

Sinister Profiles
In case you’ve wanted to know a little bit about the characters and their backgrounds. Feel free to ask me any questions you want about them!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Y/N: Main protagonist of the story! (Obviously) Anyway, the MC for this is kind of peculiar, given she didn’t and still doesn’t know the power she actually possesses. She’s the daughter of Abaddon, and upon his death, inherited all of his power. And even though we’ve seen a small glimpse of how much that is (i.e. vaporizing stone) there is so much more there. She struggles a lot internally. She doesn’t feel like she knows enough about this world she’s been thrust into, but she also wants to trust herself. She’s at a crossroads right now, and has every right to be. Her potential outweighs her knowledge for now.
Johnny: The MC’s best friend! Also childhood friend. While it was never explicitly stated,  Johnny’s parents were the ones who made Y/N human. During all of their time growing up together, he became very protective over her, particularly because she never had powers to protect herself with. Even though she does now, he still struggles to let her make decisions for herself. He really just wants to protect her. Johnny is a subtype of Genie called a Marid, which essentially is a genie with free reining magic. They aren’t bound to objects or people. Very powerful, and can be very dangerous.
Let’s take a break to talk about the princes~
Taeil: 1st prince, eldest. Technically not a full demon. His mother is a witch. Because he is half demon, half witch, he is terrifying to most people, and as such a lot of people reject him. He gave up the throne when he was young, too frustrated with how people regarded him to ever want to rule.
Taeyong: 2nd prince, heir. Very loved in the demon community, extremely powerful. Probably the most emotional of the brothers, often spends time doting on those younger than him. Despite his softer nature is revered for his strength and prowess. We’ll talk about him more in a bit.
Mark: 3rd prince, spell master. Tries to step up to Taeyong’s place when he’s gone, even though it’s hard on him. He does a good job, people adore him, and the castle hasn’t burned down yet. Tried to help Taeyong in the human realm, but doesn’t seem to understand there are things you really shouldn’t do without discussing it first.
Renjun: 4th prince, reader/psychic. Talented battle strategist, despite his age. Works with a number of the strongest generals in the kingdom and advises them.
Donghyuck: 5th prince, trickster. Typically spends his days messing with his other brothers, but he genuinely cares for them. Has a preference for illusions and mind bending. Jointly responsible for kingdom festivals with Jaemin.
Jaemin: 6th prince, potions master. Has a good relationship with the normal demons. All the princes do actually. Though Jaemin takes his role in this the most seriously, he makes sure to visit people on a daily basis, spending much of his time outside of the castle as a result. Jointly responsible for festivities with Donghyuck.
Jisung: 7th prince, the youngest, the healer. Actually just heals everyone around him constantly, you wouldn’t even notice he’s doing it, but if you were fatigued or stressed before you saw him, you wouldn’t be after. He plays cards and dominos with the elderly on a regular basis, helping to negate any joint pain or disease they might otherwise have. Probably the most loved of all the princes because of this fact.
Back to your regularly scheduled programming~
Ten: Oh boy where to start with him. He’s a demon, he’s in love with Y/N, though he never wants to say it out loud. Jealous as all hell of Taeyong, and as such is distrusting of him. Ten is a royal! He just doesn’t act like it and generally hides that level of power, though he occasionally shows it while trying to pretend it isn’t anything out of the ordinary. He’s protective of Y/N, but in a different way than Johnny. He doesn’t, or at least didn’t, think Taeyong has any ill intentions, but his feelings for Y/N tend to get in the way of his rationality. Has only know Y/N since they’ve been going to school together, but quickly befriended her as she was his favorite person to dance with.
Yuta: a.k.a the character that has had the most impact without actually being particularly present within the story. Doesn’t trust people, usually doesn’t care. Makes occasional exceptions for the people he considers friends. Kitsune, doesn’t have all his tails yet. Still shouldn’t be messed with, he will ruin you. Thinks Taeyong is going to hurt Y/N, kind of has his reasons but is mostly just really untrusting. Yuta sees Y/N as family, and she’s one of the only people he trusts, which also makes her one of the only things he’ll get riled up over protecting.
Jaehyun: One of the two people who doesn’t think Taeyong is a bad person? Actually gets confused when the others are talking about him negatively. Being a reaper, he knows a lot, hears a lot, especially since a lot of the ghosts he sees have information. Was probably the first to know Taeil didn’t stab Y/N, since ghosts see through body transformations and other illusions, but also knows it isn’t Taeyong. A bit cautious still, and generally quiet, he won’t intervene unless someone’s safety is at risk.
Doyoung: The smartest but also the weakest. Being the son of Fei Lan, he doesn’t have any traditional powers, rather an endless ability to obtain and store knowledge. Doesn’t get frightened easily, unless there is imminent danger. Loves the arts, tends to act indifferent, but has one of the kindest personalities under a rough exterior.
Sicheng: Don’t mess with him, you will not win. This should probably be written on a sign that follows him around. While it is rare for him to get riled up about something, it does happen, and it typically isn’t pretty when it does. Being a deity, it’s difficult to control the amount of strength he possesses, so he typically chooses  not to use it. Doesn’t bother with trust, because if someone were to lie to him, he could easily defeat them.
Taeyong: More or less the main boy, at least for the time being. New student, close family friends with the dean! Back from like chapter 2, it’s briefly mentioned their families have a history, but it’s actually a very long and in depth one. So, something that never really comes up in the story itself, other than a brief mention by Taeyong, is the fact he’s been in her life pretty much forever. It isn’t exactly like he’s just been watching/protecting her the entire time, he has, but that’s beside the point, he actually knew her when they were toddlers. Up until the age of 7, they actually lived in the castle together, and were extremely close. Both of their fathers were very happy because this is what they had been hoping for. Unfortunately, a lot of other royals, as well as other creatures, were starting to target Y/N, so her father had her powers masked and sent her into the mortal world, where she finished growing up with Johnny and his family, as well as the people she considers her parents. She doesn’t have any memories of her time in the castle, but Taeyong does. It’s part of the reason he feels as close to her as he does, and part of the reason she feels so close to him, even if she doesn’t remember it.
Taeil: There’s been some mention of the 1st prince but we really don’t know much about him right now, but there are a few things I want to share about him now, before we move on. Taeil, as stated before is the son of the demon king and a very powerful witch. This has caused some tension between him and his family, as well as the rest of the demon kingdom. He actually does get along with his brothers, but his relationship with their father is rocky at best. He lived in the castle as a child, also growing up alongside Y/N, but shortly after she left, he did as well, leaving to go live with his mother. He doesn’t have an interest in ruling, and he doesn’t want Y/N to be forced to rule either.

Pararelationships and Media Fandom: Good or Bad?
In this particular post, the subject matter will revolve around pararelationships we develop through fictional narratives on television shows and media fandom. To be more specific, I will be discussing my own personal pararelationship that I had with the cast from the FX original series, Sons of Anarchy, and the positive and negative effects caused by its fandom.
Tumblr media
Going to high school in North Las Vegas was a humbling experience for me. At the age of fourteen, being a mixed race teenager with no direction in life, I found myself to be a bit of a loner, just trying to fit in anywhere I could. Now, because I didn’t have a lot of true friends around, I usually would try to drown out the emptiness by listening to music or watching television. Before I knew it, 2008 roll around with one of the most ground breaking hit crime dramas in FX network history, Sons of Anarchy. The series revolves around the vice president of an outlaw motorcycle club that deals in running illegal firearms out of their fictional central California town called “Charming”, who learns though the finding of a manuscript written by his father and founder of the club that he never wanted the direction of the MC to go the way it did, and now wants to change it for the better.
Tumblr media
“When you’ve watched an actor laugh, cry, and share secrets through the media, it makes sense that you feel you know that person.” (Dill, p.53) From the very first episode I was intensely drawn in as if I were there riding in the pack along side these men, one of the main reasons being because no matter what they seemed to get themselves into, they always had each other to lean on. A brotherhood if you will, which, I had never experienced before. “We might daydream about Jon Stewart of the Daily Show laughing at our jokes, or secretly fantasize that our attraction to Johnny Depp or Gwyneth Paltrow might someday be returned.” (Dill, p.53). Later on in life, when I was able to break out of my shell, this became one of the main aspects I look for in friendships. And so far it has served me pretty well. None the less, even though I am able to point out the positives, there are still some negative effects that lie ahead. When reading through Karen Dill’s book, How Fantasy Becomes Reality, I learned that “in many ways, we learn how we should act from watching social interactions on television”. (Dill, p.52). This links to a term called, “Vicarious Reinforcement”, which is something I’ll get more in-depth with in a later post. The majority of the social interactions seen on this show display a lot of graphic and sometime gory violence from bar-room brawls to contract killings. That and plenty of sexual content that a young man like myself just could not look away from. During this time in which I was obsessed with this show, I realize that I would get into more physical confrontations than ever before, which, in hindsight was not the best way for me to act seeing how I am actually not as tough as I look. Not to mention my attitude towards authority figures and law enforcement could only be described as absolutely defiant which led me to nothing but trouble down the road. Unfortunately, this is what I was subjected to at a young age. “The end result is (sometimes unintended) learning to value more extreme behaviors because we are exposed to them more often, and they therefore become more normal to us.” (Dill, p.53).
youtube
However, I was not the only one who gained pararelationships with these gritty characters. Not by along shot. In no time, people started to catch on, band together on social media, and before we knew it, the show created a “fandom” like never before. “This refers to a subculture of fans of a particular film or TV series and can often be seen through the creation of fan-generated content that either responds to the TV series or Film, such as, artwork, videos, and social media pages.
“The Sons of Anarchy fandom creates this style of converging content and in turn a subculture of die hard fans that create Facebook sites that have over 6 million likes” (sonsinsideandout.wordpress.com, 2014). I told you I wasn’t the only one!
youtube
Is the fandom really doing as much good as its seems? I honestly believe it has in the way that it started a world-wide motorcycle craze that got a lot of people riding bikes again which I am completely for because I grew up riding dirt bikes in this crazy desert and is so much fun to do. It gave a lot of talented actors and writers the break they need to make their careers take off into the stars. The only thing I could really take into the negative side is the fan clothing they started to make. Not all of it though. There’s nothing wrong with the t-shirts, hats, and other cool swag they have to offer. It is the leather vests with the SOA patches on the back that a lot of super fans of the show wear in public. Now I know Sons of Anarchy is a fictional club, but it is the actual real life outlaw MC’s that take issue with this, and take it as a sign of disrespect. Some of these super-fans on the street seen wearing these vests have been subject to beatings and even having the vest removed and taken away. The steps one must go through vary from club to club, but according to One Percenter Bikers (onepercenterbikers.com, sec.8), these are the lengthy phases you must go through in order to become a full fledged member of an outlaw motorcycle club,
 1. Hang-around: You literally just hang out and go to club events, 3 year process. You have to be invited by a club member.
2. Associate: Go to more events and meet more members. 3 more years ending with an evaluation/vote to start the stage of
3. Prospect: You attend more events and are allowed to attend some meetings. This part can also last up to 2 years.
4. Full Patch Membership: This occurs only after a unanimous vote from all members.
Like I said it is a very long and hard process of evaluation and most men don’t even make it in, so I could definitely see why outlaw bikers find it disrespectful and make a huge deal about it. To wrap this up, I would say media fandom is an amazing and beautiful thing for a television show or movie franchise to gain, for the reason that it can really help its success, but some subcultures like the 1%er community just do not respond to it very well to it. On the other hand, pararelationships are can definitely be a positive thing, but can also leave some lingering negative effects lying around.

Rufus Thomas
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rufus C. Thomas, Jr. (March 26, 1917 – December 15, 2001) was an American rhythm and blues, funk, soul and blues singer, songwriter, dancer, DJ and comic entertainer from Memphis, Tennessee. He recorded for several labels including Chess and Sun in the 1950s, before becoming established in the 1960s and 1970s at Stax Records. He is best known for his novelty dance records including "Walking the Dog" (1963), "Do the Funky Chicken" (1969) and "(Do the) Push and Pull" (1970). According to the Mississippi Blues Commission, "Rufus Thomas embodied the spirit of Memphis music perhaps more than any other artist, and from the early 1940s until his death... occupied many important roles in the local scene."
His career began as a tap dancer, vaudeville performer, and master of ceremonies in the 1930s, and he later also worked as a disc jockey on radio station WDIA in Memphis, both before and after his recordings became successful. He remained active into the 1990s, and as a performer and recording artist was often billed as "The World's Oldest Teenager". He was the father of singers Carla Thomas (with whom he recorded duets) and Vaneese Thomas, and keyboard player Marvell Thomas.
Early life
Born a sharecropper's son in the rural community of Cayce, Mississippi, Thomas moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family around 1920. His mother was "a church woman". Thomas made his debut as a performer at the age of six, playing a frog in a school theatrical production. By the age of 10, he was a tap dancer, performing on the streets as well as in amateur productions at Memphis' Booker T. Washington High School. From the age of 13, he worked with Nat D. Williams, his high school history teacher who was also a pioneer black DJ at WDIA and columnist for black newspapers, as a master of ceremonies at talent shows in the Palace Theater on Beale Street.
Early career as a performer
Thomas also began performing in traveling tent shows. After graduating from high school, he attended one semester at Tennessee A&I University, but due to economic constraints left to pursue a career as a full-time entertainer. In 1936 he joined the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, an all-black revue that toured the South, as a tap dancer and comedian, sometimes part of a duo, Rufus and Johnny. He married Cornelia Lorene Wilson in 1940, at a service officiated by Aretha Franklin's father, Rev. C. L. Franklin, and the couple settled in Memphis. One early winner was B. B. King, and others first discovered by Thomas later in the 1940s included Bobby Bland and Johnny Ace.
In the early 1940s, Thomas began writing and performing his own songs. He regarded Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Gatemouth Moore as his musical influences. He made his professional singing debut at the Elks Club on Beale Street, filling in for another singer at the last minute, and during the 1940s became a regular performer in Memphis nightclubs such as Currie`s Club Tropicana. As an established performer in Memphis, aged 33 in 1950, Thomas recorded his first 78 rpm single, for Jesse Erickson's small Star Talent label in Dallas, Texas. Thomas said: "I just wanted to make a record. I never thought of getting rich. I just wanted to be known, be a recording artist..... [But] the record sold five copies and I bought four of them." The record, "I'll Be a Good Boy"/"I'm So Worried", gained a Billboard review stating: "Thomas shows first class style on a slow blues". He also recorded for the Bullet label in Nashville, Tennessee, when he recorded with Bobby Plater's Orchestra and was credited as "Mr. Swing"; the recordings were not recognised by researchers as being by Thomas until 1996. In 1951 he made his first recordings at Sam Phillips' Sun Studio, for the Chess label, but they were not commercially successful.
Thomas used to introduce his shows saying: "I'm young, I'm loose, I'm full of juice, I got the goose so what's the use. We're feeling gay though we ain't got a dollar, Rufus is here, so hoot and holler." He also used to lead tours of white teenagers on "midnight rambles" around Beale Street.
His celebrity in the South was such that in 1953, at Sam Phillips' suggestion, he recorded an "answer record" to Big Mama Thornton's R&B hit, "Hound Dog", called "Bear Cat" released on Sun Records. The record became the label's first national chart hit, reaching #3 on the Billboard R&B chart. However, a copyright-infringement suit placed by Don Robey, the original publisher of "Hound Dog", nearly bankrupted the record label. After only one recording there, Thomas was one of the African-American artists released by Phillips, as he oriented his label more toward white audiences and signed Elvis Presley, who later recorded Thomas' song "Tiger Man".
Rufus Thomas continued to record for the label after Carla's record "Gee Whiz" reached the national R&B chart in 1961.
Thomas continued to work with Bell and Nixon as producers, and later in 1970 had his only number 1 R&B hit, and his highest pop charting record, with another dance song, "Do the Push and Pull".
