STAR TREK: VOYAGER // S6E2 Survival Instinct The names, the memories... The memories, even the thoughts flow from one to the other. I can't love, or hate, or laugh, or cry without sharing it with them. How can any of us take a name for ourselves? We're not individuals. We're not Borg. We're nothing.

Who would call Captain Janeway “mom”
Harry Kim: completely on accident and apologizes like 97 times.
Tom Paris: definitely of purpose and plays it off like a joke.
B’Elanna Torres: would sarcastically say “Okay mom…” under her breath when leaving the conference room.
Seven of Nine: Does not understand why someone would call her “mom”. -has mommy issues from the Borg Queen-
Tuvok: Would never call her “mom”, thinks of her like a reckless little sister, but probably never admit it.
The Doctor (EMH): She is not his mother, he doesn’t have one, and he’d never mis-speak, he is a top of the line Emergency Medical Hologram after all.
Neeilx: Wouldn’t call her mom per say but does think of her like the mom of Voyager.
Kes: Does think of her like a mom and thinks she’d make a great one someday, Kes has told Janeway this and she teared up.
Naomi: Thinks of her as one of her Aunts (the coolest one) and has accidentally called her mom more than once.
Chakotay: Hasn’t called her mom but would like to be the father of her children…. Wait did he say that out loud??!
Q: Calls her Mommy (yes in that way).

This scene is funny to me.
Tuvok is all "A member of the crew has requested an appointment with the Captain. I informed her that you were occupied, but she was insistent" as if Naomi personally bullied him and the rest of the crew until they caved.

Voyager should’ve had a baseball episode. Imagine if you will:
• Janeway and Chakotay picking teams. Chakotay picks Tuvok because he once saw him exit a baseball holoprogram and has been keeping this information to himself for the appropriate moment. Beating the Captain in a traditional American game just to annoy her is the appropriate moment
• Janeway picks B’Elanna immediately after that betrayal because she knows B’Elanna will be picturing Chakotay’s face on the ball
• Harry is a great shortstop and is a good contact hitter. He bats leadoff for Janeway
• Ayala is a utility player. Chakotay takes him as quickly as he can
• Tom brags about how good he is. He gets picked last and ends up on Janeway’s team. Chakotay promised her extra coffee for a month from his rations to avoid picking Tom
• Naomi Wildman is the bat girl. The helmet is too big for her and she can barely see but everyone notices her smile
• Tuvok is really good at baseball. It’s only logical to play a sport that humans love, and it turns out that it’s also logical to optimize your technique and master a 112 mph fastball. Vulcans have stronger ligament and muscle structure so his body can handle the strain. He throws a screwball, knucklecurve and a changeup. Harry is the only one to make contact until the fifth inning
• Janeway walks every plate appearance. Chakotay claims it’s because Neelix is too scared to call strikes, but it’s really because Tuvok can’t bring himself to strike out his friend
• Neelix is the home plate ump. He does not know what balls and strikes are but won’t let anyone explain
• Seven knows everything there is to know about baseball but refuses to play. The Borg assimilated a baseball player once but they were so annoying that Seven will never acknowledge that she knows anything about the sport. She keeps score. Later, every player will be anonymously sent a scouting report
• Chakotay is a power hitter and plays third base. He secretly loves baseball even if he’s doing this to mess with Janeway. He hits two home runs off Tom
• Tom strikes out every at-bat. He doesn’t even make contact. He misses worse and worse every time. He’s been drinking the postgame beers in the dugout. After Harry steals home, he showers him in beer
• The Doctor caught Neelix making a big batch of cracker jacks when three ensigns end up in sickbay. He makes him stop and then when he finds out about the baseball game, he makes himself an umpire
• The Doctor sings during the seventh-inning stretch. He goes on for an hour. Everyone (minus Tuvok) has opened up the beers
• B’Elanna hits the game-winning single past Chakotay. She never lets him forget it about even after they return to earth. She thinks he threw the game to make Janeway happy
• Years later Chakotay tells her he actually pulled a muscle in the third inning and that’s why he missed the ball. She asks the EMH to confirm. He does. She still doesn’t believe it

I think Tom Paris introducing 90’s music to the crew would have been disruptive. They’re on the bridge during a semi-crisis and Janeway asks how long it’s been since their last transmission and Tom says “it’s been one week…”

Tom introduces a new craze to Voyager. This time: Rubik's cubes!
Tuvok and Seven figure it out easily, but dismiss it as irrelevant and a waste of time. (Seven keeps one anyway.)
Harry figures it out pretty quickly. It holds his interest for a few weeks, but when the craze dies down, he recycles his in favour of something more interesting.
The Doctor downloads the solution into his programme and shows off by solving them in seconds. Everyone is initially impressed, but they all know it's just code and not skill so they quickly get fed up.
Tom never quite figures it out, but he doesn't want to admit that to anyone since he introduced them in the first place, and a bunch of people caught on pretty quickly ... but he didn't.
B'Elanna's the only one who knows Tom can't solve it. She's better at it than he is, but finds them annoying so she doesn't bother to figure it out. She's fed up with Tom leaving unsolved cubes in her quarters, so she learns to solve them by taking them apart and putting them back together again. Tom thinks she actually knows how to solve them. He asks her to teach him, but she just gives him a superior smile and refuses.
Chakotay never bothers to try and learn. He'll pick up ones that crew members abandon in the Mess Hall and fiddle around with them while waiting for someone or something. He figures out how to solve one face, but leaves it at that.
Neelix borrows one of Tom's to try and learn, but he returns it a week later, apologising because he couldn't figure it out and had to return it scrambled.
Janeway is secretly fascinated by them. She spends her free time teaching herself to solve it, and soon enough she can do it without thinking. She doesn't tell anyone she's figured it out, but she does keep one tucked away in her Ready Room long after the craze is over. Solving it sometimes helps her think. Only Chakotay and Tuvok know.
Everyone is surprised by how quickly Naomi figures it out. Actually, she had Seven teach her. Tom asks her to teach him. He has to bribe her not to tell anyone, though, because he's embarrassed about asking a three-year-old child how to solve the thing he introduced everyone to.

Do you think Kes' ability to pick up on things so quickly is linked to her being an Ocampa? Like, since she's 2~ years old in canon (and has distinct memories of her father) I imagine her species doesn't spend much time as children and I wouldn't imagine they'd have formal schools (like entire buildings for schooling) and would instead learn from like, primarily parents or other elders. In that case learning things very quickly would be extremely beneficial for their survival. Kes: Oh yes, childhood...what a lovely few days~ Kes was a baby like for a day and then the next day she was up and ready to learn. Kes meets Naomi and every day that passes she becomes more and more amazed that she's still a baby. Wow! It's been like two months and she still can't do anything?? The doctor told her it was normal but wow. What I'm saying is they should have had Kes as a jack-of-all-trades character who could slide into pretty much any of the teams on Voyager. The Doc misses her when she's not in sickbay though!

I still am seething Voyager's ending didn't at least show the crew seeing Earth again >:(
----
Lt. Reginald Barclay was one of the first to board the newly returned Voyager. He's one of the very few right now, the crew and ship still under quarantine to prevent any spread of foreign diseases that the crew had long been accustomed to. Barclay isn't a fan of the decon suit he has to wear, but is willing to overlook it because he can't wait to meet the crew for the first time.
Captain Janeway is the first one to greet him, her smile blinding as she watches the lieutenant exit the shuttle he'd arrived in with a box and enter a temporary hazmat area to prevent anything from slipping out into the shuttles that dropped by most days with supplies or medical officers. Her handshake is firm when he reaches out with a nervous smile, and Barclay can see she's happy for a fresh face.
"It is very nice to finally meet you Lieutenant."
"Likewise C-Captain." He reaches into the hovering large container he's brought with him, and pulls out a thermos. "Fresh coffee, I heard you're a fan."
She laughs, and accepts the thermos as if it's the most important thing she's ever held.
"I've been cleared to bring, to bring gifts for everyone from family and friends." Barclay declines to bring up how he basically had to guilt trip half of the upper command for this to happen, but it's of little consequence. "It's not much, but I thought you'd a-appreciate it."
"These will go a long way to boosting morale." Janeway motions for Barclay to come follow. "I will admit, the crew are eager to go home and breathe in fresh air."
"I asked around, a-and medical will probably clear you all within the next month." The halls at first are empty, and Barclay can see the wear and tear from seven years without proper upkeep, honestly astonished the ship had been able to remain in one piece over all that time. "How you came home, in one piece? It's astonishing, utterly astonishing."
"You and I both, it's nothing short of a miracle...or seven." He can hear a faint whisp of regret behind her words, and just offers a small smile as they head towards what he assumed was the bridge.
Instead, they emerge into the dining hall, where what had to be the entire crew was waiting for him.
"Everyone, may I introduce Lt. Barclay." The cheers that rang out nearly deafened her introduction, and crew Reginald had only seen in reports and his holograms for testing were just...there, smiling at him.
"Nice to meet someone not trying to take even more blood," Harry spoke first, shaking Barclay's outstretched hand fiercely.
"Don't hog all the attention." Paris nudged his friend's side, eyeing the container. "What's in there?"
"Uh, I-I brought gifts." Reginald smiled, and has to take a step back when everyone surged forward before Janeway and her SIC Chakotay stopped them with a sharp whistle.
"Sorry, we're just excited!" Little Naomi grinned from her perch on top of a table, her mother supporting her as she wanted to see a new person with her own eyes.
She was much more adorable in person.
The next two hours were spent with Reginald distributing things he'd been given, the crew spreading out over the floor and tables to show off their gifts and to talk about those they missed. Laughter filled the air as Barclay spoke about how he'd threatened his career for the first time they had spoken, and he was taken aback to find he'd been made an honorary crew member after the fact.
It's late when the crew, sated and overjoyed when they find out he'd be returning, finally disperse for the evening. He can still see they're all wired to be on alert, a few whispering to those who probably had been night shift for so long to go and rest with them when they turned to head to stations.
"I think you've given the crew their biggest morale boost since they arrived home, if I may say so." The Doctor hummed, holding a small retro camera that Zimmerman had sent him. "They were all excited to meet you."
"I'm nothing special." Barclay shrugged, a bit sheepish at the notion.
"He's right, the moment we all heard your voice for the first time, everyone was smiling for days." The captain smiled, remembering it was one of the happiest she'd ever seen her crew at the time. "You're brilliant, and if anyone says otherwise, tell them Captain Janeway wants to speak with them."
"Yes ma'am." Barclay gave a short salute, finally standing from the seat he'd been given what felt like ages ago. "That's it for me, I-I've got to get back before I end up a pincushion myself."
"When do you think you can visit next?" The Doctor asked, he and the captain escorting Barclay back to the shuttle bay, the crew they walk past all waving or wishing the man a goodnight.
"Hm? Well, in a day or two." Barclay hummed, mentally running through his calendar. "There are more things meant for you and the crew, but once it's all clear, they're yours!"
"That's wonderful news." Janeway pats his shoulder with a hum, and soon they're back to the pick-up zone for Barclay. "Do you want to leave the container here?"
"Might as well, I'm not sure how much I'm bringing next time." Like clockwork, the shuttle that dropped him off is soon within view, and Barclay steps into the decontamination zone with a small wave. "I-It's been nice meeting you all...well, finally, anyways."
"The same to you." The Doctor gave a short nod, and Janeway did the same.
"You're welcome back anytime Lieutenant, you're as much crew as anyways else here."
Reginald smiles, the warm feeling from the acceptance of people he'd never truly met something of a wonder for someone like him.
He already can't wait for the next visit.

I love Naomi Wildman. I mean, come on, she’s amazing. Here’s a kid who grew up completely aboard a starship for the first 5 years of her life, and then is thrust into life on Earth.
(I’m going off of each season being about a year; Naomi was born end-ish of season 2. Also just a note, this kid grew up remarkably fast. Like, by season 4, she looks elementary school-aged. Like, this girl is 3 at that point. I think.)
But imagine, you’re going to school, and the teacher introduces the new kid, who’s much younger than the rest of the class but doesn’t really look it, but she’s half Ktarian, so it makes sense, you suppose. Her spikes are pretty cool, and she smiles when you tell her that.
Then the teacher asks her to stand up in front of the class and tell them a little about herself. And you find out that she’s from Voyager, that ship that got lost and had a big party when it returned. Your cousin is in Starfleet, and you remember how happy they were about the ship coming home. That’s pretty cool, you think to yourself.
She’s smart as a whip, you find out after she asks to join your group for a project. When you ask her who her teacher was out in space, she just smiles. “Everyone, really,” she explains. The rest of the work time is filled with stories of holograms and Borg, and somehow the project still gets done.
And then comes the day when the school goes on lockdown. No one had expected it, nothing like this had happened in decades anywhere, and no one knows what to do. There are protocols and rules, which the teachers are doing their best to follow, but it’s clear they’ve never truly been trained for this to be a reality; it’s a distant concern, a worst-case scenario. For everyone except for Naomi Wildman.
You watch in awe as she takes charge of the situation, helping the teachers get everyone to safety, keeping an eye and an ear open for every possibility. You’d never thought a tennis racket would be any good off of a court, but she holds it like a weapon, one she is prepared to use.
(You ask about the racket, later when all the fuss has died down. She explains that Captain Janeway (Captain Janeway!) had taught her how to play.)
You also ask her, once everything is all over and the intruder has been caught and everyone is safe, how she knew what to do. And she just smiles. “That’s just how it was growing up, I guess. Something could always go wrong, so I had to learn how to stay safe. And I learned from the best.” She says all this with that smile on her face, and it makes her look like she’s nostalgic for something. And you decide, right then and there, that Naomi Wildman is a badass.
