when i have a nightmare i sit in bed staring at the wall thinking about it and then for the rest of the day i float about with a weird tightness in my chest and feel dazed.
i never try to combat them because there is no way to prevent them. if you have nightmares then you have nightmares. thats something you just need to accept.
if i dont have a nightmare i get more distraught then if i did have one, at this point.
and ive had insomnia for my entire life. one of my earliest memories is sitting on the couch with my brother all night until the sun came up and i went to school. when i was 4.
none of what you shared is actually what we *do*. it's side effects of what happens if you dont get enough sleep.
when im having bad insomnia I'll just pull an all nighter. I'll stay up listening to music, watching stuff, cleaning, cooking, taking a bath. basically whatever id do during the day but with way more energy.
if i have somewhere to be early in the morning then I'll try to rest by listening to music while laying down and imagining a bunch of fandom and oc scenarios. i rarely wver actually can fall asleep like this, but thats the thing.
you dont need to sleep to be rested. you dont need to completely go unconscious for your brain to repair itself. if you just lay down with your eyes closed-->thats resting.
i also notice i have severe insomnia during the night but during the day i cam fall asleep relatively easily. to the point i have to force myself to stay awake to do errands. so i also take actual naps throughout the day.
tossing and turning is a major thing if youre TRYING to fall asleep but you camt, and tossing is actually preventing you from falling asleep. lay still and do nothing for 30 minutes nd you might have better luck. tho i myself am guilty of tossing when i really need to sleep but im just wide awake.
things people do after having a nightmare that isn’t crying
struggle to catch their breath
grab onto whatever’s close enough to ground themselves in reality
become nauseous / vomit
shake uncontrollably
sweat buckets
get a headache
things people do to combat having nightmares if they occur commonly
sleep near other people so they can hear the idle sounds of them completing tasks
move to a different sleeping spot than where they had the nightmare
leave tvs / radios / phones on with noise
just not sleep (if you want to go the insomnia route)
sleep during the day in bright rooms
things people with insomnia do
first, obviously, their ability to remember things and their coordination will go out the window
its likely they’ll become irritable or overly emotional
their body will start to ache, shake, and weaken
hallucinate if it’s been long enough
it becomes incredibly easy for them to get sick (and they probably will)
