Dorothy's Top Five Games of 2024
Honorable Mentions:
Suzerain: A gripping and fully-developed world of politics and international relations, Suzerain released its Rizia DLC this year, and I played through both it and the main campaign. Its realistic portrayal of political and economic processes, in the backdrop of a world almost our own, proved extremely addictive.
Goodbye Volcano High: A heartfelt and moving interactive animated miniseries about coming of age in apocalyptic times, with some great indie rock-flavored music.
We Love Katamari Reroll: A delightful followup to the original Katamari Damacy, We Love Katamari is more of the same - and what more could you ask?
Sea of Stars: A beautiful love letter to classic JRPGs, with gorgeous environments, delightful timing-based combat, endearing characters, and wonderful music, including guest tracks composed by legend Yasunori Mitsuda.
Dragon Age: the Veilguard: Now the story of a studio who lost everything, and the one game that had no choice but to get them back on track. It’s Arrested Development.
And now, the list proper.
Fifth Place: Penny's Big Breakaway (Evening Star)
Tumblr media
I have a tremendous soft spot for 3D platformers. Some of my earliest memories of video games involve playing Super Mario Sunshine, Sonic Adventure 2, and Spyro (the bad one) on GameCube.
Penny's Big Breakaway feels like a refugee from that era of platformer, one which would have felt at home on the Dreamcast, GameCube, or even the original Xbox or PlayStation 2. It combines energetic, almost frantic platforming with a high skill ceiling and combo system with a turn-of-the-century graphical aesthetic and fantastic music by Tee Lopes to provide a return to form for a genre which has for too long been permitted to languish.
As with most 3D platformers, story is not a major focus. You play as Penny, a yo-yo-toting busker who ends up running afoul of an emperor and must escape imprisonment by his army of colorful penguins. That's it. That's all you need. This simple premise provides ample excuse for Penny to run, jump, and roll her way through a host of themed worlds. Sometimes, less is more.
With that said, this is not a perfect game. The controls take a lot of time and effort to master, and even after a good amount of play time one is liable to fling oneself off of the map. Health powerups are not as plentiful as they should be, especially in boss encounters, and a lack of camera control can be downright painful at times. Still, these complaints do not ruin the game, and hopefully they can be addressed in a sequel.
The developers of Sonic Mania have created a true gem with this, the debut game from new studio Evening Star, and I look forward to seeing what the studio comes out next - like the best platformer mascots, Penny has the charisma and style to inspire adventures for years to come.
Fourth Place: Neva (Nomada Studio)
Tumblr media
Neva is the latest release from Nomada Studio, creators of the brilliant game Gris, and where Gris was a parable of grief and loss, Neva is an ecological fable in which a girl and her dog must make their way through an increasingly-ravaged natural world beset by decay and corruption.
The core gameplay of Neva builds and iterates upon what was seen in Gris, with a dash, double jump, and ground pound, but added in are a sword, which main character Alba uses to fight enemies as well as unlock obstacles, and abilities involving the titular dog which are unlocked over the course of the game. The combat is fun but fairly rudimentary, and I saw it as a garnish on the real focus of the game, which is robust and engaging puzzle platforming of the kind that made Gris such a delight.
The game, as expected of Nomada Studio, is gorgeous, with a beautiful art style, impeccable sound design, brilliant use of color, and haunting, atmospheric music. The level design is also excellent, spanning a number of natural environments which are slowly but surely overtaken by the creeping decay, as well as man-made structures resembling those in Gris, which are also crumbling and in a state of decay. The degradation of nature and collapse of the structures of man are linked in Neva, giving rise to uncomfortable thoughts about the state of the world today.
Neva is defined by cycles, cycles of life, death, decomposition, and the cycle of the seasons, which give each of the game's four chapters their names. The game ends in an echo of its beginning, a beautiful and bittersweet ending I will not spoil here.
Neva is a hauntingly beautiful, if frustratingly short, gaming experience which I think will stay with me for a long time. I felt compelled to hug my dog after it was done.
Third Place: Metaphor: ReFantazio (Studio Zero)
Tumblr media
When Metaphor was first announced, the impression that everyone got was that it was fantasy Persona, with a large amount of development staff carried over from the Hashino Persona games, a lot of mechanics and systems carried over from those games, and even some summonable demons from the mainline Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games. Commentators made note that this was fantasy Persona. Journalists endlessly referred to it as fantasy Persona. Reviewers regarded it as fantasy Persona. It was such a cliche, so aggravating to fans, that it became verboten in the fanbase to refer to the game as fantasy Persona.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is fantasy Persona. This is in no way a bad thing. As in the Hashino Persona games, there is an emphasis on social simulation, with the main character forging bonds with his party members and honing his social skills - not to self-actualize as a social being, as in Persona, but to prove his mettle and worthiness as a king to a kingdom cast into chaos after the last king's murder.
It is this emphasis on fantasy that sets Metaphor apart. The game is constantly musing on fantasy tropes and the transformative nature of the genre, and it has a surprising amount to say about the appeal of fantasy narratives, to say nothing of its overarching themes of prejudice and self-determination.
In terms of gameplay, Metaphor actually takes a lot more from the Press Turn system of Shin Megami Tensei than the One More system of Persona, and it took me a while to get into the groove of it. Once I did, though, I had a great time chaining attacks to strike at opponents' weaknesses and finishing my turns with devastating damage via the game's Synthesis mechanic. The game's central gameplay feature, the Archetype system - a sort of job system like those in Sqaure Enix RPGs - was also something I took to readily after some initial fiddling. The game lets you mix and match abilities from different archetypes via the skill inheritance system, and I had a lot of fun creating an ideal build for each playable character.
And then, of course, there's the characters. Metaphor features a large cast of characters, and I was happy to see that all of the social link equivalents featured strong and compelling narratives that made the time needed to invest in each rank of their story a worthy commitment. In particular, I found the narratives of Eupha, Heismay, and Maria especially compelling, and the bonuses provided through spending time with them to be particularly valuable.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is fantasy Persona. And that's a good thing! It's a great game, and I hope it's one that gets revisited sooner rather than later. Studio Zero have produced a real gem for their debut title, and I really hope they keep the momentum going.
Second Place: Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (Sucker Punch Productions)
Tumblr media
I am a huge fan of the works of director Akira Kurosawa - Throne of Blood is my favorite film of all time - and the jidaigeki genre of samurai films in general, so when I learned that Sucker Punch was making a game inspired by the genre I was filled with excitement which turned to dismay when I learned that the game would be PlayStation exclusive. Thankfully, though, little stays PlayStation exclusive for long, and I was happy to finally play Ghost of Tsushima when its Director's Cut released on PC this year.
The setup of Ghost of Tsushima is pretty simple, and slots in nicely with its genre - you play as Jin Sakai, the sole survivor of a massacre of samurai at the hands of invading Mongols, and must use all the tools at your disposal to free the jito, your uncle, and liberate your island home of Tsushima. Along the way, you begin to chafe at the code of honor you are expected to uphold as a samurai and as your uncle's heir apparent. While Ghost does have a simple premise, it is its characters, and their struggles and dreams, which kept me invested throughout the experience.
The game's combat is consistently satisfying, with the player rotating through various swordfighting stances to counter specific enemy types, while also having access to a bow, bombs, poison darts, and various quickfire items which can disrupt enemies and allow you to control the flow of combat. It's a fun system to master and learn how to get through any encounter without taking any damage. Occasionally the game also puts you in one on one duels with certain enemies, which are always fantastic - the one at the end of the game especially.
Where Ghost really shines, though, is in its exploration. I wouldn't call Ghost of Tsushima a true open world game - the player's access to the island's various regions is gated by story progression, and you unlock more of Tsushima as you progress, while having free reign of any area you have access to at any given time. The game heavily rewards exploration with a variety of activities and collectibles, which differentiate themselves from the typical Ubisoft-style open world icons by being fun, useful, and engaging. You'll scale mountains to reach a shrine to a kami, or rest for a while in a hot spring to increase your health, or (anachronistically as the art form did not exist in the 13th century) compose a haiku to earn a new piece of cosmetic gear. You'll also follow a number of character-based side stories, one-off side quests, and mythic tales which unlock powerful abilities and armor, all of which are extremely engaging and memorable. I would liken Ghost of Tsushima to last year's Tears of the Kingdom in terms of just how good it feels to explore and discover the island of Tsushima's beautiful environments, and uncover all of its secrets.
As a lover of the genre, I could barely put Ghost of Tsushima down in my initial playthrough of over 70 hours. It more than earns its spot on the list, but there's just one game I think left even more of a mark on me this year.
First Place: Persona 3 Reload (P-Studio)
Tumblr media
I am a recent convert to the Persona series, having first played Persona 5 Royal in 2022 and playing Persona 4 Golden when it released on Xbox in 2023. However, I have fallen deeply in love with the series, and when Persona 3 Reload was announced I made the decision that I had to play it on release day. I called out of work and preordered the game - something I never do - and through a combination of being trapped in my home by a massive storm and losing my job the next week, I ended up plowing through Persona 3 Reload in about a week. I simply couldn't put the game down.
I had very little knowledge of the story or characters of Persona 3, having never played my copy of Persona 3 Portable since this game was announced so soon after that released, and so experiencing this narrative for the first time was an experience I'll never forget. Persona 3 is a game about death which is simultaneously extremely life-affirming, celebrating the relationships, connections, and simple joys that make life worth living, while embracing the fact that everyone must someday die and using that fact as motivation to live every day to the fullest. It is a moving, emotional story anchored by rich, engaging characters. I cried several times throughout.
The gameplay of Persona 3 Reload, a refinement on the turn-based systems of previous entries, is polished to a shine, and I found myself blowing through whole blocks of Tartarus, the game's only dungeon, in a single in-game night due to how engaging and addictive the combat felt. It felt extremely rewarding to find effective combos and a synergistic team that could raise each character's Theurgy gauge as quickly as possible, and the structure of Tartarus hooked me in surprisingly effectively, given that I wasn't a big fan of Persona 4's TV Wortld dungeons, or Persona 5's Mementos, dungeons with a similar structure to Tartarus. It helps that there's a surprising amount to do in Tartarus, from rescuing lost civilians to fulfilling requests for the Velvet Room attendant Elizabeth to exploring the various Monad Doors and plundering their rare items.
Persona 3 Reload is a very special game, one that I think will stick with me for a very long time. I can easily see why fans had been clamoring for a remake for so long, and I am extremely grateful that we finally got this game as a result. It is a genuine masterpiece, and easily takes the title of my game of the year.

Best games I played in 2024
This year I finished 36 games on various platforms, both new and old games (I even played on PS2), some were great, some less great. But which games earned my personal Game of the Year awards in 2024? Let's find out!
1st place: Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition (PC)
A true hidden gem that exceeds a lot of big budget productions in quality and enjoyment. Combines the best parts of JRPGs.
+ Great presentation: cute and sympathetic graphics, surprisingly amazing music, visually pleasing environments, nice overall atmosphere. + Fun combat and gameplay with convenient systems. Skims all unnecessary, cumbersome stuff and keeps things simple and lean, yet gives options for character customization. Possibility for rewarding exploration. + Good sense of progression with stat increases and gear upgrades. + Interesting story with good pacing, likeable characters, well-written dialogue and good humor. + The length of the game is just right. There was never a dull moment and no needless padding. I like a game that respects my time. - Minor nitpick but controls took a moment to get used to: there's no easing, nudging the stick moves the character up/down/left/right at full speed. - I would have hoped teleporting was possible straight via map instead of walking to a teleport crystal.
See my posts about Ara Fell
2nd place: Chants of Sennaar (PC)
Unique puzzle-adventure game that tickled my intellect in just the right ways. Exceeded all my expectations despite knowing it's a well-received game.
+ Visually memorable, stylish, pleasing colors. Good music + audio. + Exceptionally interesting and rewarding game mechanics. Such gratifying feeling to uncover the meaning of the glyphs, getting the logic/grammar of the languages and understanding cultural differences. Logical deduction at its best! + Nice story that had me wanting to find out how it ends. + Well-designed puzzles. - Level design could have used improvement in a couple of places as rooms looked too identical and made navigation frustrating.
See my posts about Chants of Sennaar
3rd place: Pokémon Ultra Moon (3DS)
I really got into Pokémon Ultra Moon and I have 100% Pokédex completion and 259 hours of play time to vouch for it. One of the best games in the series.
+ Rather charming visuals, good music. Overall I just got a really cozy and positive feeling of the game. + Great gameplay with superb team building options. More challenging battles than usual in Pokémon games. Convenient quality of life features. + Quite decent story. Nice character cast, a massive selection of Pokémon. + Nice side / post-game content with great attention to detail, enjoyable and funny side quests with great world-building. - Super double battles, etc. available a bit too late in the game. - The surroundings of the Pokémon Nursery weren't the best for hatching eggs (yet I bred more Pokémon than ever).
See my posts about Pokémon Ultra Moon
Honorable mention: Piofiore: Episodio 1926 (Switch)
Fantastic sequel. Crown jewel of my otome game collection. I think my husband is a Piofiore fan now also. I'm sad there's no third game in the series.
+ Incredible art style, beautiful UI, superb voice acting, great music. + Nice overall story with some very good routes. Memorable and fun characters with good dynamics - I now obsess over them after having played both Piofiore games. + Good localization. + Yang. - Some eye-roll-worthy dialogue and some routes I felt were a bit whatever. - Poor contrast in some memoir parts made it nigh impossible to read parts of the text.
See my posts about Piofiore: Episodio 1926
Honorable mention: Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)
This critically acclaimed JRPG with intense atmosphere and rich party customization had me glued to my Nintendo 3DS for a good moment.
+ Great art and music that emphasizes the dark, oppressive and hopeless tone of the game. + Addictive gameplay, especially demon fusing. Good battle system. + A gripping story with multiple endings, cool characters. Surprisingly disturbing content. + Some hilarious dialogue to lighten up the mood. - Weird difficulty curve: very tough start, then last boss fights were no challenge. - Combo of bad overworld map, frequent demon encounters and dead ends was frustrating. - Poorly explained quests at times - how can anyone beat this without a guide?
See my posts about Shin Megami Tensei IV
Honorable mention: Xenotilt: Hostile Pinball Action (PC)
Addictive pinball with a twist - the table attacks back! Sometimes I kept playing this for hours and I occasionally jump back in for a run or two.
+ What vibes! Super cool presentation. The music goes hard (got the soundtrack for Christmas) and the sound effects complement the awesome aesthetic perfectly. Not sure what the lady says at times ("dry your food"?), but she sounds great anyways. + Top notch high-speed pinball gameplay with bullet-hell influences. You can even defeat bosses here. Highly addictive and fun. + No story content found here but there's multiple different game modes to challenge yourself with. - A couple of glitches caused me grief in the early access version, these have apparently been fixed now. - Even though there are smaller bonus tables you can enter from the main table, another main table would have been a great addition.
See my posts about Xenotilt
Honorable mention: 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (PC)
A thrilling mystery-adventure game kept me guessing whodunit. I did not expect all the things that ensued and that made it all the better experience.
+ Nice art style, great Japanese voice acting, super good music as well. + A well-written, compelling mystery story that leaves just the right amount of questions and room for own interpretations. Interesting way to weave real-life events into the story. + Good puzzles: some easy, some pushed me to my limits. - Grating dialogue and relationship between certain characters. - True ending was stretched too long and repeated the same things unnecessarily.
See my posts about 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Honorable mention: Pandora's Tower (Wii U)
An underappreciated action-adventure classic long overdue for a Switch port. Wholly exceeded my expectations.
+ Pretty good art direction, great music, good English voice acting. Atmosphere and game design choices gave me Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus vibes. + Fun gameplay with enjoyable combat, time limit aspect was implemented well. Nice level design. + Unique and compelling setting, story that made me want to keep playing. - Poor camera angles made boss battles frustrating at times. - Aiming the Oraclos chain was clumsy in hectic situations (I used the Wii U GamePad right stick). - Inventory space limit, my worst enemy made an appearance.
See my posts about Pandora's Tower
What comes to the honorable mentions, I wanted to pick a variety of genres. That is why I decided to leave Octopath Traveler II out and replace it with Xenotilt, as I already had multiple JRPGs in my top picks for this year.
Nominees for my personal Game of the Year 2024
Only games I have finished in 2024 have been included.
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (PC) A Castle Full of Cats (PC) A Little to the Left (PC) Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition (PC) Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Xbox Series X) Chants of Sennaar (PC) Cupid Parasite (Switch) Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (Switch) Eastern Exorcist (PC) Easy Come Easy Golf (Switch) Etrian Odyssey Nexus (3DS) Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise (Switch) Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure (PC) Lies of P (Xbox Series X) Little Kitty, Big City (PC) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2) Mizi NO! I forgot to watch content all week so i wrote about games ive been playing
9/2/2021: The Truman Show
You should fear your fears but embrace them and use them to guide you into the unknown, to explore and experience what life has to offer. Fear stands between you and the fullest experience of life so you must pass through it to better yourself. Heed not the walls built about you and the chains made to hold you. Though the architects insist it will preserve your life, containment is anathema to life. Do not take in faith the benevolence of powers that be; instead trust those who would support and liberate you, guide you through fear and into life.
As best I can lay it out, I think this is the philosophy of the Truman show but there is so much more to read into it also. There is critique of systems of commodification and celebrity (i.e. capitalism) reducing human beings to a consumable good as well as encouragement to find and pursue your goals despite adversity and even sensibility which is also tied to the illusion of economic responsibility. You can’t put a camera inside a human head, you can never “know” them without being an active and intrinsic part of their life, but also there is need for reciprocation. If one half exists with ulterior motive then the entire relationship is rotten; sincere humanity is what creates real connections. Without such your world is fake. A world built around one person is a world where no one can truly live. All these actors have given up basically their entire lives for the sake of watching Truman have his life built around him by outside forces, have allowed themselves to be commodified and dehumanised for the good of one man, Christoph. The man at the top has delusions of grandeur and thinks only of his own bottom line, he cares not for his subjects but simply wants them to do as he tells them because it benefits him to commodify their lives and interactions. Even then he cannot stand to lose control and in seeking to demonstrate Truman’s “realness” he structures his life so thoroughly that eventually there’s no reality left, only a script and adverts. But the people watching still empathise with Truman because everyone in the working class understands what it is to be trapped because real life is our own Truman show and one day we must all pass through fear, step out of the dome and create a real life for ourselves outside of the system of commodification which consumes everyone’s life and removes all realness and sincerity and emotional catharsis from it.
I unreservedly love this film.
14/2/2021: Assorted Game Reviews
Horizon Zero Dawn (Unfinished due to technical issues, 45 hours inc. parts of Frozen Wilds): This game is really cool and really fun. I think it is defined by its incredible setting which somehow creates a fresh feeling post-apocalyptic environment. Said environment creates intriguing alt-future lore and some very interesting environments to explore. I love the machine designs (especially tallnecks!) and was very sad to hear one of their contributing artists passed away recently but I’m glad their work lives on in this visually stunning game. I’m a sucker for Ubisoft-style open world games simply because it tickles a certain kind of itch and somehow this non-Ubisoft game has outdone Ubisoft on their own formula, which is hilarious, but also good for me as running around this world exploring and clearing map markers is engaging fun. Not least because of the combat. I have a minor criticism here that the combat feels slightly awkward on mouse and keyboard, the arrows never seem to go where I’m aiming, but aside from that the experience of fighting is a grand one. Enemies never lose their threat and I love the weak spot system the game employs which makes every tool useful in niche circumstance and rewards curiosity. It specifically manages this in a way that I feel the Witcher series could learn from if it ever returns; by making head on assault less viable and encouraging tactical hunting. I do feel this system makes hunting robots so fun that by contrast hunting humans becomes a chore however, though I noted this improves in the dlc with the addition of humans with elemental weaknesses limited in number as they are. I cannot speak for the story in entirety but what I encountered was pretty good, though I feel as if it was only just really getting going at the point where I could not continue. I find Aloy to be a compelling and well portrayed protagonist and though I can guess about her origin and the ultimate end of the alt-future apocalypse I still want to see how it plays out on screen, so will return to this as soon as I’ve fixed it.
Rimworld (122 hours. Familiar with but do not own Royalty Expansion):
Rimworld is one of those super special games that I don’t think I have a single problem with. Fair warning it can be brutal and is heavily dependent on RNG but this allows it to create truly unique and interesting scenarios on a constant basis. In the wider perspective it could be described as formulaic, with regular cycles of managing the settlement between raids and random events, but the devils in the details. Colonist traits, health and skills dictate how you play and sometimes you’ll be forced to adapt as some colonists simply refuse to perform some tasks. The depth of health particularly amuses me, in that each little part of someone’s body is modelled in a way. If you’re in a firefight you may take a single bullet which grazes your finger and you’re fine. Alternately it could pierce your human leather cowboy hat, your skull and kill you instantly and the game will tell you exactly what happened. The risk/reward element is addictive enough, and that’s without accounting for just how cool it is to see your colony slowly expand. Establishing more and more options for crafting is fun and shows off the full range of different items in the game which is fucking extensive. Between clothing, weapons, armour, sculpture and drugs to name only a few you have the opportunity to create many varied production lines either for your colonists or to trade for money and there is a lot of fun to be had here as well as it is quite satisfying to see psychoid you have grown personally become the cocaine your colonists snort to help them stay awake on limited sleep. From an archaeologist’s perspective it is especially cool to look back over your base and see the hints of how and why structures were built and remember the history of your limitations and development through structure. I think the lore of the universe is really cool too, a very 40k-esque kind of place except with far less order, somehow. But the universe does an excellent job of feeling alive and moving constantly on both a planetary and interstellar level. You can fully believe that while you build wooden shacks to shield yourself from terrifyingly low temperatures there are simultaneously rich pieces of shit living it up on the glitterworld that’s one system over. The music does an excellent job of creating the wild west frontier atmosphere the game cultivates to great effect. Ultimately, for just being a grid with a series of different numbers attached, this game does a fantastic job of creating a compelling, brutal and very real colony management experience. I dont think I can properly put into words the grandness and scope of this one. I didnt even mention the modding scene, which is expansive and tailors to basically any need you could have. The Rim is a terrifying place but theres so much fun to be had.
Factorio (86 hours, mostly 1.1): Having completed a game of Factorio I can tell you reliably that this is one of the best games ever made, thoroughly addictive and fun. If you like numbers, logistics, TRAINS, its gonna be your thing. Not to mention its probably the only documented case of a game with no bugs (so far as official forums are concerned). Strictly speaking this games combat is not the most engrossing thing but good lord do you feel it when you acquire a flamethrower. The way each aspect of the game (production, research, logistics, combat, upgrades for everything therein) feeds into the next is a really well constructed balancing act such that you must experience the full game in order to complete it and I always appreciate this kind of design. I think its one of the best tenets of factory game design especially as its something present in Satisfactory too. Beyond all of this generalised good the game is also excellent in its intricacies, the architecture necessary to build a maximum efficiency base, the level of planning and organisation that can be employed is mind-blowing. Not to mention the mod community, factorion is already an extensive experience and some mad bastards have seen fit to complicate it further, hats off to them. This really is a great moment in gaming.
Destiny 2 (198 hours, all expansions, played some post Forsaken release, mostly Season of Arrivals onwards, spent roughly £20 on microtransactions):
This is a very interesting and enjoyable experience, but I must say it can be a bit controversial at times. What its does particularly well is moment to moment gameplay and design in all aspects. The game is stunning; between environments, cosmetics, shaders ships and ghosts there’s a vast range of incredible things to see, all rooted in the “pseudo-magi-science” aesthetic it’s got going on. The class design is excellent and you really do feel like you embody this rampaging madman / agile gunman / space wizard archetype, whichever you choose to play. The abilities, especially supers, are very satisfying. Everything has heft and power behind it which can be felt in all aspects of design; sound and animation is top notch. Movement is cool, you can feel how fast you move both on foot and in vehicles and the navigation has a little fun subtlety depending on your class jump, even if you can bounce unpredictably occasionally. But for the love of god why is the wall kick in there? It has only ever served to push me from a ledge into a bottomless pit. You're looking to remove antiquated content? Start there. Some guns are not so good to shoot but there’s such a great range of guns that are fun its like complaining about one drop in an ocean; and enemies are fun to shoot at, each faction distinct in meaningful ways and presenting an effective challenge. Speaking of oceans, that’s one way to describe the lore. I haven’t dived too deep but it keeps going down forever and everything I’ve read is intriguing. As a former Elder Scrolls lore nut this is something I could definitely sink my teeth into, though its much more of a pulpy sci-fi vibe than a pure nonsense vibe. I do think the game has a bit of a loot problem, primarily in regards to the conflict between high stats and looking good. This should never be a conflict, and yes you can apply ornaments to any purple gear but that’s not enough when I spend the entire time grinding power levels and thus must change armour and weapons on a constant basis to progress. This game needs a true transmog system and if not that, rethink how gear power level works. Perhaps rather than earning new instances of gear you always possess a version of it and the loot you acquire in missions just upgrades your instance to your current overall power level? This would serve to do away with the current upgrade system which I think is a needless additional grind. Perhaps it could be retained in using enhancement cores to empower gear as present but necessitating a whole upgrade module to keep your favourite weapon on hand is kind of painful honestly. There is also at present the issue of sunsetting gear, mildly controversial to say the least. If it’s necessary to streamline the game and make it function moving forward so be it but surely loot pools should be adjusted so you can actually get useful loot from older locations? And why sunset personal instances of gear which can be acquired at the regular power level anyway? I had to throw away my favourite bow and hunt down a new version of the exact same weapon for… what reason? I do think destination navigation leaves a little to be desired also. I get that having a physical hub world is meaningful but Destiny does not have a very extroverted community; I can count the times someone noticed me in the tower on one hand. And its not even like there’s fun activities to be found in the same sense as say Deep Rock Galactic, which really does take advantage of its hub. Perhaps for players who simply want to go about their business all of the vendors could be set into a menu system where just clicking an icon takes you to their menu from anywhere in the system rather than, per se, having to go through an entire loading screen (Which takes you to orbit and back) to reach a location which serves simply as the front for four menus. These are established player problems. As a dedicated PvE player I can say that this game is immensely fun in combat and growing in power does feel really good. It’s something I recommend getting into, there’s just some very large creases that need ironing which the Bungie should really take the time to address rather than pushing out new in game content every three months.

Hi Ram!^_^ I wanted to hear your thoughts on the GG Strive Beta. Does have a completely different feel compared to previous GG games where you felt you had to relearn how you play a character?
The Open Beta is a lot of fun, actually!
Sadly, the servers are down at the moment, which I’m a little upset because I wanted to practice Nagoriyuki more!
Anyway, The Open Beta....I’ll list pros and cons.
The Pros:
The animations are just amazingly beautiful, it gives more of an anime-cinematic feel to the gameplay. The stage transitions are pretty awesome, it really gives you more depth and detail on the world of Guilty Gear and its setting.
I used the stage transitions to explore the place, Arc Systems seriously put in a ton of effort into creating the stages. Not only that, but it really shines light on how strong and dangerous powerful the GG fighters are for certain characters could do a number on the environment like Sol Badguy for example.
Characters introductions looks pretty neat, it resembles a story mode scene. Almost reminds me of the intros from Mortal Kombat 11 and their epic entrances into battle, but the difference is that there is a quiet intensity in Guilty Gear as the two characters are getting ready to face off.
Gameplay is a bit easier than the previous games, no surprise given Daisuke’s intention on making it more ‘newcomer-friendly’. I’ll be honest, the main character that took me by surprise in gameplay is Ramlethal, her play style is vastly different. The swords aren’t used for pressure, instead she launches them at the corner and they explode like bombs, so you can tell she is making good use of them than before. Heck, she was difficult for me but I’m getting the hang of her a lot!
The Cons:
I love the new game, but it isn’t without its flaws in my opinion.
While I did say the gameplay is easier, the combos feel restricted and there is a lack of options in being creative compared to XRD. The combos are almost based on juggling similar to Mortal Kombat or whatever. Even when you somehow adapt to Strive’s system and try to get a good combo in, the stage transitions can interrupt your momentum.
Again the stage transitions are good, but I feel like I’m tripping over a shoe lace whenever I try to do an awesome combo.
The damage output from certain attacks needs to be worked on. The Potemkin Buster could potentially one-shot you in a match and Nagoriyuki’s Zanzetsu is WAAAYYY too overpowered, despite being fun to pull off. I don’t want my matches ending too quickly, that is why I pick the option of 3 rounds instead of 2.
The texts that appear in gameplay are a little....too much. The most annoying one is the COUNTER word that appears across the screen. I’m probably being nitpicky but the font and sizes of the texts can be extremely distracting for me, especially when I’m playing Nagoriyuki lol no lie, sometimes I enter Blood Rage by accident!
The layout of the options menu and the stage/music selection was confusing for me. It’s just...too extra and all over the place.
-----
In conclusion, I’m giving the Beta a solid...B-.
It’s great and addicting, but they need to work on the damage and that text. Also, I hope in the final version, we might get something to help make the combos feel more satisfying to pull off.
The only and main redeeming qualities of the game that makes me  very lenient of it are the animations, the intros, and the stages.
Great game and possibly the best Guilty Gear game in terms of animation and cinematic moves, but it feels incomplete.
I hope to see the Instant Kills in the final version, I’m curious to see Nagoriyuki’s and most especially Ramlethal, I’m still suspicious about those bandages!

nights into dreams
i'd never played this game all the way through before; a big reason why is that frankly, it makes me mildly motion sick. regardless, after obtaining a saturn 3d controller yesterday, i figured it was time to finally play through it. and i'm very happy i did! nights is a joy. it's a gorgeous game aesthetically; while it received a ps2 remake that looks fairly nice, the saturn original just can't be topped. vibrant colors, inventive locales, and excellent character designs. the music is amazing too. but that's all expected of a sega release in the mid 90s, now isn't it? where nights truly shines even beyond that, is its unique, addictive gameplay.
nights is a very strange, special game. it defies genre completely and in general i find it pretty hard to describe; there's nothing quite like it. it's a 2.5d game, of sorts; you are locked to a single plane in a 3d environment. on that plane, you attempt to go as fast as possible while on a timer, flying through rings and making circles (called "paraloops") around objects to collect them, among other actions. as you perform these actions, a chain tallies in the corner, multiplying your score. you continue to loop through this plane until you collect 20 orbs (called "ideya"), at which point you can cash them in and continue to the next lap, or keep looping for more points. after 4 laps, you move on to the level's boss. if you didn't really get what i was saying, that's pretty much to be expected; it's an odd game that you really have to play to understand.
nights is probably my favorite game by sonic team. it's uncompromised ambition and vision from naoto oshima and yuji naka working at the height of their powers. there's a nagging feeling through a lot of it that it'll stop being fun, that at some point their big ideas will get too big for them, but it never really happens. it's just a blast all the way through. unfortunately, it's not necessarily a game that has wide appeal. sort of staking the saturn on a game that's impossible to pitch and practically requires a special controller to play wasn't one of sega's brightest moves, but i'm glad a game this weird and special got to have such a budget and big release behind it at the time regardless.
also, there's a bizarre, complex, largely inconsequential artificial life system that just kind of goes on in the background. i didn't really have a good place to talk about that, so i'm just dropping it on you here.
if you want to play nights, you're in luck, because it's literally free on steam until december 13th, which is about a week after me posting this. you can get it from sega's 60th anniversary website here. you'll want a controller with an analog stick, and the controls are nicer on the sega saturn mode. getting a c-rank or higher on every level (beating the game) will unlock christmas nights, a holiday-themed demo that's an excellent play this time of year. if you're reading this later on, nights is $7.99 on steam and routinely goes on sale for something like $3. both of these prices are excellent. you should play nights!

Resident evil 3 remake city
Tumblr media
#Resident evil 3 remake city full
Jill’s redesign looks good, albeit little like her original or Resident Evil 5 appearance, and, as with the RE2 remake, an attempt to make dialogue and writing grittier (think more casual swearing) is hit-and-miss at best. I played through the demo on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One S, with performance stable on both platforms and the image looking slightly sharper than the RE2 remake overall (this despite the larger environments and a greater number of roaming zombies on screen). The environment remains incredibly detailed despite being more expansive character models, for both the protagonists and zombies, are intricately detailed and gruesome the music is subtle with unsettling ambient audio creating a brooding atmosphere while the lighting remains the standout feature, with fires and neon lights casting terrifying shadows across the environment, highlighting shambling zombies in hellish shades of red and blue (or effectively hiding them in the shadows). On the presentation front, first impressions are strong. Raccoon City looks better – and more logically designed – than ever. I’m personally hoping they’ve not ditched all the quirky aspects.
#Resident evil 3 remake city full
Based on the demo, Raccoon City has been reimagined as a larger and modern urban environment, rather than a small pharmaceutical town full of bizarre tourist attractions that double as puzzles and improbably narrow roads. It’s a more grounded endeavour than hunting for obscure parts, in unlikely locations, to fix a tram engine. It’s a modernised take on the tramcar escape plan from the original, with higher stakes (not that the civilians with them have a chance based on the pre-existing lore), which sees Jill heading back onto the streets, alone, to find the local substation and restore power. They’re desperate to get the metro online again so that they can escape to the city limits. The Raccoon City Demo happens early in the game (assuming it’s following similar story beats to the original), with Jill having met Carlos, who introduces her to his UBCS commander Mikhail in the Redstone St. Just as RE3: Nemesis released less than a year after fantastic Resident Evil 2, building on the same foundations but with a fresh story and minor gameplay tweaks, so too does the RE3 remake. It’s an oversimplification but it best sums up what you’re getting, at least based on two runs through the Resident Evil 3 “Raccoon City Demo”. So come along and share my disappointment as we look at why this year's Resident Evil 3 remake is a massive letdown. To put it simply, Resident Evil 3 remake is 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis reimagined and recreated in the same engine used for the Resident Evil 2 remake. Instead, we've been given a narrowed down, linear experience with all of its unique charm from the original removed.Ī much shorter runtime, bare minimum of endgame content, not to mention any real threat from the big nasty titular creature makes for a lacking experience.Īnd no, Resistance doesn't make up for any of it. That snazzy Regina-from-Dino-Crisis unlockable costume? You'd better believe that's gone. Massive parts of the original have either been tweaked or just flat out removed.Ī massively addictive unlockable minigame? Non-existent. Whilst it may have retained the more action-focused gameplay of its original, it comes at such a massive sacrifice. The groundwork's been there for the last twenty one years. You can hardly say it was rushed, either. It's disappointing because it had so much potential to expand on what last year's remake offered us. falls short of expectations.Īlright, not going to beat around the bush: It sucks. It pains me to admit it, but this year's remake of Resident Evil 3 really, really.

Celebrity Wars: The Force Unleashed II is a third-person action-adventure headline which possesses players have control of a duplicate of Starkiller, the anti-hero lead character from the authentic Force Discharged activity. Happy face is a young boy that is undergoing problems in life as well as encounters all of them through using a mask. Lego Marvel (FRAMEWORK Streaming) takes the Wonder Comic books world and also places it into an exciting action game. In the stepping in years, Illiger has actually remained to update the game and also keep, and it's stays a precious favourite for its own attractive environment and efficient gameplay - a very early example from ways to create a mobile phone video game ideal. Retina-searing fine art design aside, the video game believes that a slam-dunk for any type of follower from timeless platformers. One of our favored components of PlayStation Virtual Reality is actually merely how many other categories of games this has. Arranging birthday party notification is effortless: select the 'Write Information' tab and also you will be rerouted to a page where you may write your birthday celebration notifications. This's clear you'll never find Nintendo activities on iOS, yet PicoPicoGames is actually the second best point: a collection of tiny, addicting NES-like minigames. All your interactions with this game are actually with clicking and also dragging, so this works merely great on a Chromebook. Fantastic Britain get in a staff for the video games which is made up from sportsmens from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but throughout guide it is mentioning the England volleyball crew as well as other such rubbish. Directing cabling in the real world provides madness, and so this might not be actually the most intelligent operation making in to an activity played on an unit with a glass display. This's certainly not just what I expected from an author that formulated the rather one-of-a-kind suggestion of the NPCs in computer game being actually active as well as real individuals embeded storage tanks from goo. There were actually absolutely no happy individuals within this publication apart from one, as well as they placed him in a psychological establishment. The small grab is actually a hexagon sits at the top, and also the 2nd this comes under deep space, your game mores than. By comparison, in a problem game time works like an egg cooking timer: fracture a degree just before your patience ends and the timer is flipped; your store of persistence is renewed. Enjoying popular music demands that individuals open up the media gamer or Groove Music application and also pop this sideways from their monitor along with their game. The Hunger Games is high quality YA, smartly created, and also despite its own imperfections this's worthy of effectiveness. This brings in the listing due to the fact that is one of the best addicting and also straightforward games you'll obtain your practical. I kept viewing The Despising Activity on my Twitter, Instagram, and also Goodreads timetable as well as because that is actually been actually collecting higher scores, certainly my inquisitiveness was piqued. Does Not Commute is actually a clever activity that incorporates driving and challenge aspects to offer you along with a suspenseful as well as unique experience. I specifically suched as the opening stock, which provided a concrete capability test surrounding activities like deciding on a word that ought to be actually gotten rid of off a paragraph or testing your callback after reviewing an extract. Quite potentially the most effective LEGO video game to date, LEGO Superstar Wars: The Pressure Awakens is a certain breath of clean Hoth air for the stagnating flick franchise-turned-LEGO game formula.

Five Good Free VR Games
There are plenty of great free VR games on the internet, but it can be tough to choose the best one. Thankfully, there are plenty of options to choose from. There are some really good choices, though, including these five titles that are sure to please you. Here are some of the best VR games: The Adventures of Tiny Tom, Meet the Medic, and Surgeon Simulator VR. All three of these games have received overwhelmingly positive reviews from Steam users.
Horizon Beyond is a free VR game that puts you on a space ship and lets you see the clouds in the distance. You can play this game on the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Valve Index. This short-cut title is a perfect choice for those who don't have time to play full VR games. Its short length and bite-sized nature makes it easy to try out in your spare time. While it didn't make a big splash on Metacritic, Horizon Beyond has received good reviews from users on Steam.
The VR platform title Glyph is a great choice. Players need to analyze their surroundings and set their speed accordingly. Unlike most other VR games, Glyph lets you compete with friends and unlock a variety of skins. The levels are nonlinear, making the game fun and addicting. Lodestone, on the other hand, is an exclusive free VR game that puts players into the shoes of a super spy. The game is a perfect James Bond simulator, and its level design and physics will keep you hooked for hours.
If you're looking for something different from a VR experience, you might want to try out Beat Saber. This game is an intense rhythm game in which players must slash to the beat of a song. As such, it's not a bad choice for a casual gamer. Just be sure to wear external headphones while playing, so you can hear the music as well as your surroundings. For the best audio quality, it is essential to get VR headsets.
If you're looking for a free VR game, then look no further than Red Stare. It's a sandbox VR title with a unique '50s setting. As an agent, you need to collect information by analyzing Alexander Malshakov around you and adjusting your speed. You'll collect information through a fax machine, your mobile, and files on your desk. Eventually, you'll need to distinguish individual characters from a large group of enemies to complete your mission.
If you want a free VR title, then you'll probably find several excellent choices on Steam. Portal Stories VR is an excellent example of a free VR game. It takes a dark stance on accounting, and it's a great choice for anyone who's just starting to explore virtual reality. It's also a great choice for beginners who haven't played the original Portal. Once you've found a few of your favorites, you'll be happy you did.
There are many other good free VR games for Steam. Roller coasters are a great way to test your VR skills. Guns'n'Stories is a great free VR title that offers a western setting and smooth gunplay. There are also a couple of other free VR games you can play on Steam that are more challenging, but they all remain worth the download. It's a game that's worth the download.
If you're looking for a VR game that offers a challenge, you'll want to check out Red Stare. It's an action VR game that's based on espionage. You'll play as an American spy in the '50s. The gameplay is a combination of spying and fighting, and the first level is an elaborate simulation of espionage.
Among the free VR games for PlayStation VR, Tea For God is a popular VR game that features nonlinear environments and a unique way to interact with other players. The game can be played with a VR headset, and is available for the PSVR, Xbox One, and PC. While the experience of playing this type of game is completely immersive, it can also be challenging and expensive. Thankfully, there are a few good free VR games for PlayStation Vita, HTC Vive Cosmos Elite, and Valve Index.

It's game over for 2023. Time to talk about the best games I played during the year. I finished many enjoyable titles on various platforms, crossing genres and time to visit even decades old games. I finished a total of 38 games this past year. And because I apparently didn't have enough choice for devices to play all these games on, we got an Xbox Series X to our household on Christmas week.
Anyhow, here are the winners of my personal Game of the Year 2023 awards. *drumroll*
1st place: Vampire Survivors (PC)
My addictive substance of choice. Doesn't shine in the graphics department with modern tech. Doesn't try to impress with thought-provoking narrative. The incredibly simple yet satisfying gameplay however is engineered to perfection. A true masterclass of game design.
+ Infectiously fun, action-filled reverse bullet hell roguelike gameplay. Just one more run! + Bold artistic identity. + Humorous touch in character/enemy design and fun nods to other videogames. + Superb soundtrack. + Tons of quality content for an incredibly cheap price. Free updates and paid DLC with even more content. - The flashing effects can go a little overboard and cause discomfort. - Later stages of game can lag even decently powerful hardware.
See my posts about Vampire Survivors
2nd place: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U Virtual Console, originally on Game Boy Advance)
A classic Castlevania that holds up nicely even 20 years from release and on a big screen. With a bit more memorable music and a small quality of life improvement, Aria of Sorrow would have earned the coveted 5/5 stars in my book.
+ Balanced and fun gameplay with a good sense of progression. + Top tier level design with a concise map. + Nice art style in environments, sprites and character portraits. Great animation and enemy design. + Fitting music and audio. + Good story. - Lacks item to warp to last save room or outside castle.
See my posts about Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
3rd place: Touhou Mystia's Izakaya (PC)
Chill vibes managing your restaurant, gathering ingredients and talking to characters by day turn into frantic cooking and serving action by night. This game got its recipe right.
+ Fun, rewarding gameplay loop mixing leisurely action and challenges testing your attention. + Enjoyable story with funny events. + Wonderfully cute pixel art. + Catchy music. + Lots of content for a low price. - Starts slow, even a bit boring in the beginning before you get special customers and unlock more recipes. - Final battle had annoying RNG. - English translation could use a little polish.
See my posts about Touhou Mystia's Izakaya
Honorable mention: Crimson Shroud (Nintendo 3DS)
This surprisingly challenging table-top RPG inspired game impressed me with its quality and satisfying gameplay. This is a hidden gem worth visiting.
+ Challenging gameplay with long and brutal battles make for a rewarding experience. + Good, well-written story with two endings. + Cool art direction with 3D models mimicking table-top RPG figurines, pretty illustrations. + Great music. + Game's length is just right to keep player invested. - Overall difficulty is higher than usual for JRPGs and Game Over wasn't a rare occurrence on my playthroughs. Slight frustration ensued due to having to retry the long battle from the beginning. - Confusing equipment UI (comparison of current vs new gear).
See my posts about Crimson Shroud
Honorable mention: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Nintendo DS, played on 3DS)
Unique experience with tricky chain reaction puzzles and fantastic characters. Prominently fluid and amazing animations - I can't believe it's a Nintendo DS game! This is no trick - it's a treat.
+ Inventive gameplay and mechanics, perfect fit for touch screen. + Interesting story that definitely doesn't forget humor despite the grim subject. + Memorable characters (Cabanela and Missile were my favorites). + Awesome art style and marvelous animation quality. + Great music throughout the game. - I almost lost interest at some point and got impatient to finish the game. - I guessed one of the key plot twists but luckily that didn't put a dent on the ending.
See my posts about Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Honorable mention: Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360, played on Xbox Series X)
Entertaining cover shooter with varying missions. The game never had a boring moment and the length of the single player campaign was just right. I'm looking forward to playing Gears of War 3 next!
+ Fun gameplay that sets expectations for other shooters. + Interesting setting and story with some cool events. + Fun dialogue that made me chuckle many times. + Good music and great English voice acting. + The challenge on Normal difficulty was just right for me. - AI controlled companions got stuck occasionally, leaving you alone in dangerous enemy territory. - I didn't always understand the mission objectives in the hectic situations. - Cutscenes can't be skipped (thankfully this is not a Kojima game).
Honorable mention: Signalis (PC)
Atmospheric sci-fi survival horror paying homage to older games. Puzzles are different from usual and require attentive skill and logical thinking to solve. This game deserves a sequel.
+ Intriquing sci-fi story with an impactful ending (there are multiple endings too). + Great art direction, appealing PS1 era inspired retro graphics with skillfully crafted pixel art. I very much enjoyed the nod to Ghost in the Shell. + Unique, well-designed puzzles and good level design. + Great atmosphere. - A bit clunky combat. - Tiny inventory space forced me to backtrack more than I would have liked. - Annoying design choice to not include a map in a couple of areas.
See my posts about Signalis
Nominees for my personal Game of the Year 2023
Only games I have finished in 2023 have been included (looks like I played a lot of games starting with the letter T).
An Arcade Full of Cats (PC) Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (3DS) Assassin's Creed: Revelations (PS3) Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX (Switch) Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U Virtual Console - GBA) Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (3DS) Crimson Shroud (3DS) Detective Pikachu Returns (Switch) Dordogne (PC) Fitness Boxing (Switch) Gears of War 2 (Xbox Series X - Xbox 360) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (3DS) Immortality (PC) Kuru Kuru Kururin (Wii U Virtual Console - GBA) Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk (PC) Liberation Maiden (3DS) Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U) Piofiore: Fated Memories (Switch) Pokémon Art Academy (3DS) Pokémon Rumble World (3DS) Scorn (PC) Shadows Over Loathing (PC) Signalis (PC) Sticky Business (PC) Super Mario Bros. FPS Research
SUPERHOT
Tumblr media
Superhot is a FPS that uses simple graphics with everyone looking the same with a body made with polygons and all of them having a slight glow with there red body's makes them game slightly addictive with how easily they explode and the red light show that happens with it, since people associate red with danger ad to the fact there glowing it, and the game allows you to slow time aiming at the bad guys is easy. The hardest thing with the game is the fact that you are swarmed with enemies, this is also a addictive thing about the game since you learn there attack patterns each time you die. slowing down time only happens when standing still which lets a lot of unique strategies.
The main issue with the game is it doesn't have much depth out of its gimmick and addictiveness, with every enemy looking the exact same and having no real story it can be seen as shallow.
There isn't that many games like it but it shares a lot of similarity's with the basic concept of mobile games with you trying to beat your previous score and as soon as you die you instantly are put at the beginning, there isn't any story like mobile game either.
The game has standard music for a fast pace first person shooter, with the music being quick and loud.
Borderlands 2
Tumblr media
Borderlands 2 is a fast pace first person shooter with little to no usage of cover you are mostly jumping and dodging the enemy with your own skill to kill them. The game is repayable, with different characters to select from with there own different ability's it has you learn a unique playstyle for the character you selected leading to wildly different gameplay with another. The shooting in borderlands at the start normally consists of you shooting one enemy slowly until it dies while dodging other enemy's trying to kill you but as the game goes on your character will have its own playstyle utilizing there skill to there advantage. Later on the game has you mowing down enemy's one from another while constantly moving.
The game could use cover more, despite the playstyles people can develop it normally just goes to you jumping around the map while shooting enemy's and dodging since they didn't take on the way the player would fight the enemy to account.
the story has you on the planet Pandora while trying to kill the main enemy as well as finding a vault which in the game is treasure.
The games music can changes depending on the environment with it being more neutral or quite compared to fighting enemy's.
DOOM 2016
Tumblr media
Doom is a fast pace FPS and feels a lot like Borderlands with you dodging enemy's by jumping and dodging but it feels more fleshed out with the characters pace feeling perfect for this type of gameplay, there is a feeling of being powerful unlike Borderlands 2 with the game having your strength feel a lot less impactful. DOOM could be this way because of the bloody graphics and the violent kills you can get. Weapon swapping feels natural but some how makes you feel cool since you normally run out of ammo then switch to a different gun after killing lots of enemy's.
The game hasn't perfectly balanced feeling overpowered and the game being hard with the hardest difficulty only posing somewhat of a challenge when you learn the controls.
The music in the game makes you feel how strong your character is, it feels like its your theme and not the enemy's.
Call Of Duty Black Ops 2
Tumblr media
Call of duty black ops 2 is a FPS with more of an emphasis on cover based combat, the selection of weapons was large and the combat made you feel desperate with you normally being boxed in at areas when you hit the enemy you could feel the impact enough and could tell when you hit an enemy without it feeling too unrealistic.
the games combat was a little too generic with many games playing the exact same way, This game pulled of the style good enough but it would of been nice to see some variety in play styles.
Far Cry 5
Tumblr media
Far cry 5 is a FPS action adventure game where you play the roll of a rookie police officer and have to retake an island from bad guys, this follows the Far cry formula so far. The game play has cover based shoot outs as well as shooting in the open it really depends on how you want to tackle the enemy, you can do from stealth to barging in the enemy's base. The combat is generic, though later on you can afford better weapons which adds a new kick to combat  with how powerful some of the weapons can be.
One problem is some of the enemy's can look like ally's witch is annoying and unintentional. The melee weapons can be used as ranged by throwing them but it is so strong it renders using guns useless.
Conclusion
FPS games can be utilized in a lot of ways from slower cover based to high fast pace it poses more of a challenge then 3rd person games since your view is limited to the characters eyes. FPS games should also have some kind of sign when you hit someone like a sound or vibration, otherwise you would be shooting blindly which wouldn't be fun. Make the enemy's and the allies clear, that could be different clothes or a red marker, anything that indicated its a bad guy. FPS that use cover more normally have a button that you use that locks you to the nearest cover normally if a game doesn't have this then it doesn't want you to use cover

tipsy reviews: breath of the wild
So last month, early november, I went and got myself a Nintendo Switch. And for my new console I bought 3 games: MarioKart Deluxe, Super Mario: Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
What I used it for mostly during this time period was.... Mariokart. It’s a fun and addictive little game while the two openworld games required a lot of effort with no linear path, so I wasn’t looking forward to a lot of busywork.
To my pleasant surprise, when I finally sat down to complete Odyssey, I discovered that the game was filled with many little secrets. It would reward you for experimenting, for putting objects in funny places, and solving its puzzles. The addictive gameplay helped me steamroll through the game to its logical conclusion, and then beyond.
Breath of the Wild, fortunately, follows a similar path. Gone are the many hours of tutorials, talking swords, and narrow Hyrule paths. Now we find the world not only open, where you’re free to move in any direction  and climb any mountain, but filled with many secrets and challenges to spend your days working through!  It’s not fair to say that Breath of the Wild is without its challenges though; the open-world formula starts out with many, and though Zelda subverts the issues plagueing more well-known users like Assassin’s Creed, it does fall into some unique pitfalls.
In this post I will discuss the different areas of this game - story, gameplay, puzzle elements - and see how they compare.
Environment: I felt like it was most important to talk about this aspect first, because the world of Hyrule is so significant to the potential and failures of every other part of the game. Everything to do with story, puzzles, difficulty, it’s all related to the open world, what’s in it, and how you navigate.   Breath of the Wild kinda looks like a barren, empty game when you look at its open world face-value. There’s very few cities, most of the place is ruins littered with some enemy camps and lots of caves. Not a lot of history at all! It reminds me of the empty Hyrule Fields in Ocarina of Time. And there are no sprawling dungeons like in its predecessors. The closest to this is the shrines, short mini-dungeons which were created by the Sheikah predecessors to help the Hero destroy Ganon.  But what Breath of the Wild does RIGHT is utilize this seemingly empty open world to its full advantage. It’s filled with a variety of animals and critters to use for cooking, challenging opponents who you can loot, korok seeds which you need to solve a riddle to collect (but which are far less irritating than riddler trophies), hidden treasure for you to discover... And perhaps the most immersive tactic is how we are able to take damage from the environment - you can freeze to death on a mountain, or dehydrate in the desert, or roast in the Goron mine. All of this, combined with the many, MANY shrines and seeds and their corresponding puzzles, makes this world feel... alive. Like people and animals actually live here.   And the most adrenaline-bursting part of all is entering a Divine Beast for the first time and realising you can manipulate the environment using the map. THIS is what makes a great adventure game. Now, it’s still a fair departure from the classic dungeon crawlers or the previous three entries, but I think Breath of the Wild pulled off its world very impressively. Much more fun to explore than London or North America. It is only for an issue I’ll discuss later on that I have to rank it as low as 8/10.
Story: BotW does make an interesting departure once again from before, though in some ways I feel this had lost potential. The story is COMPLETELY optional - as soon as you leave the great plateau, you can fight Ganon and call it a day. But if you choose to dig deeper into the memories of Link, you’ll discover that you were ALREADY the Chosen Hero, sealed deep into the Resurrection Shrine by instruction of Zelda. You were identified early because of your upbringing as the son of a Royal Knight, and that’s about it for Link’s known pre-mastersword history. It’s unknown what adventures you went on before. Now you and four Champions were chosen to prepare to fight Ganon. The backstory between you and Zelda is.... mixed, kind of depressing actually; she resented you for a long time because you were so good at your job as the Hero of the Sword while she was deeply insecure over her inability to activate her powers and how her father kept putting pressure on her to constantly pray when she just wanted to become a huge nerd, helping out in other ways.  It ends with Ganon unleashing its power across Hyrule, the Champions being killed and trapped in the Divine Beasts they were going to use against him, and Link nearly dying protecting Zelda who  saves him last second with an awesome Light that Burns the Sky.   After watching 25-ish cutscenes, I... was quite disappointed, because they kept rehashing stuff I already knew; Zelda was insecure over her lack of power, she disliked Link but grew to respect him, and the other Champions are.... well, Mipha’s the only one who has any real history with Link. Revali sees him as a rival, Urubosa looks after Zelda, and Daruk is very hardy and enthusiastic. It’s really cool meeting these characters in the Divine Beasts but you don’t learn much more, and I heard the Champion’s Ballad DLC is the same...  Ganon himself isn’t a chilling villain like before, moreso an intimidating threat. He’s not nearly as scary as the Twilight Beasts or any named Ocarina of Time boss, and he takes very little skill to defeat, even compared to some of his Blights (Thunderblight Ganon took me multiple attempts with its fast hard-hitting moves). In fact I think I’d be able to sweep him easily without saving any Champions. The worst part of all though has to be how it just CUTS YOU OFF.  You complete the game? Yeah, that’s kind of it. There isn’t a “post-game”, it just lets you load your past save. That’s what pisses me off the most. I wanted to speak to Zelda about all those memories I found! Oh yeah the game is also sneaky and won’t load the secret ending cutscene if you didn’t report to Impa and recover the hidden memory after unlocking the Hyrule Tower memory, so good luck doing what I did and getting that one last just before the final boss.  All in all, 5 out of 10. It did its job, but was nothing special whatsoever, lots of wasted potential.
Gameplay: When you first start playing Breath o the Wild it is extremely punishing. Your weapons  are shit, your damage is shit, you WILL get oneshot many times. But when you pump more hours into it, you gain lots of momentum; since there are so many areas of gameplay, so many ways to approach a certain situation, it becomes inevitable that you’ll figure out a good solution to any fight.  This is a double-edged blade; while it’s lots of fun to kill enemies inventively, the difficulty curb at the BEGINNING of the game is so steep that you’ll find it becoming stupidly easy later on, when you’re more overpowered and you’ve mastered the enemy attack patterns. Sure, they may turn black or silver and do hella damage, but what’s a god to a player who knows how to exploit their AI?  And you’ll be swimming in so many powerful weapons that you’ll abandon them all after a certain point, cos there’s nothing worse to trade out.   The biggest victims of the difficulty scaling have to be the Ganon bosses, all of them, which DO NOT gain health or difficulty at any point. It’s like fighting Champion Wallace’s level 40 watertypes with a level 70 rayquaza, which is what I did in my Emerald playthrough...  This means that the greatest elements of Breath of the Wild’s gameplay are those moments where your tools aren’t quite enough, where you have to prepare and plan. Maybe there’s too many moblins to take on at once? Maybe you’re playing the Island Trial and you have no decent weapons? Maybe you’re trying to complete the Zora divine beast quest and you come face-to-face with the Lynel on the summit? Maybe there’s multiple Guardians aiming at your direction and you have no Ancient Arrows? In all these situations I’ve had to be inventive, sneak around and attack on the sly, or avoid combat altogether.  But what’s even more reliable is the puzzles. You’re not handheld, you’re not told how to do anything outside of the very basic controls - every single puzzle you solve is completely your own accomplishment, your own skills, and sometimes it’s not set out clearly at all so you have to be creative. Nobody TOLD you to put that one rock in the gap between all the others, but you did it, and now you have a rock! And nobody TOLD you how to make a recipe that heals all your hearts and gives you 3 to spare, but your experimentation crafted a recipe.   THIS, in my opinion, is what makes a definitive gaming experience - respect for the player. 9 out of 10 too many royal swords.
Music - No videogame review is complete without an OST ranking. Now.... BotW tried to play a certain role with its music, having it in the background colouring your experiences rather than defining them. This is quite appreciated because it would have been distracting to have booming enemy music for an opponent I knock out in 2 seconds (cough OOT cough). However, outside of its main theme, Breath of the Wild lacks almost all the signature Zelda tracks that have been defining for the series. I’d say that the absence of this booming music makes it.... not feel much like a Zelda at all. It better reflects the open and partially destroyed world, at the expense of recogition. That’s not to say it’s without gems though.. there are very few things more chilling than the music that plays in ganon-possessed guardian containing the tormented soul of your dead zora girlfriend. 7 out of 10, servicable and decent.
Conclusion - Breath of the Wild is a smashing game, which deserves the praise it gets, not because it’s an open world Zelda but because it REDEFINES the possibilities of an open world game. Instead of littering itself with countless copy-paste fortresses, it offers puzzles and challenges that show respect for the player’s adaptability, encouraging you to explore all the different options its mechanics offer. Instead of making you choke through an insufferable and possibly frustrating campaign to unlock new areas, it gives you the options and tools to go anywhere you like as long as you prepare. It says much when even this game’s biggest weaknesses can be played for strengths. And oh man, what a solid introduction to the Nintendo Switch generation.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 8 out of 10.
