Ray of Hope: Debo Ray Spins 'Feelin' Lucky' into Gold As if a phoenix first flapped its fiery wings, Debo Ray's latest track "Feelin' Lucky" bursts from the ashes of past afflictions with a disco-infused defiance that sets every nerve alight. Here we find our Grammy-nominated siren weaving tales of liberation in threads spun from pure sonic gold – charged with an electrical storm of empowerment and unrelenting joy. The funk fizzles like champagne, pop elements sparkle amidst the pouring R&B melody, leaving one not just listening but virtually strutting alongside Ray through each decadent verse. https://open.spotify.com/track/2gThzwbUJHtLC6vyEr374s Produced by the Midas-touched hands of Prince Charles Chef Alexander, this single serves up soul food for thought; it’s jive talking to oath breakers and heart shakers about finding fortunes you didn't know were lost. Within her vocal velvet lies a manifesto of freedom—a wild declaration dressed in retrospect that dances cheek-to-cheek with future aspirations. [caption id="attachment_56331" align="alignnone" width="1152"] Ray of Hope: Debo Ray Spins 'Feelin' Lucky' into Gold[/caption] The lyrics cast spells against former shadows; it’s less about tossing coins into fountains than sprinting barefoot away from whirlpools that once sucked dreams dry. Imagine empowering hymns praised at full-volume out car windows on freeing freeway exits—or as bedroom anthems disrupting neighbors dead-set on sleep. https://youtu.be/8P7CPp5VTtI In short: "Feelin' Lucky" becomes your backtrack to newfound independence or simply beats for shaking ground under constricting circumstances—either way, Debo Ray revives spirits long before echoes fade over shared airwaves. This slice deserves spotlights every time sunrise tempers life's relentless roulette wheels. Follow Debo Ray on Website, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Music Review
The Temptations, Four Tops In Concert.
The Mo Town Sound.

Robert M. Massimi.
The Temptations have been playing music for 61 years. Last night at the Morristown Performing Arts Center the band was extraordinary. Playing under the Mo Town label, like many of the great artists back in the 60's, The Temptations played feel good song amongst the nations most turbulent times. As the Vietnam war raged and protests were almost a daily occurrence, bands like The Temptations and the Four Tops would put forth music that wasn't so much political (some songs were), but songs about love, going about everyday life and the good things that life had to offer.
Mo Town in the 60's were a brand with many artists from the Detroit area. Not only did the bands under the label sing well, they could also dance and visually entertain their audience as well as play music and sing. The Temptations were no exception and last night was proof that this band can still perform!
As they took the stage last evening, the band would be the evenings second and last act. Showing gratitude to the sold out venue, the band belted out seven songs in a row at rapid speed. I don't know of a band that have such versatile voice; from deep baritone to high soprano and everything in between. As they opened with "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" you could hear this versatility right from the jump.
Where The Temptations succeed is that the many different songs that they produced over the years: "Just My Imagination", "My Girl", "Get Ready", "Lady Soul", "Shakey Ground", their rendition of "The Band Played On" are just a few that this wonderful band has played over the years.
After the mid 70's the band did not record an awful lot of songs; they would cut some more songs in the 80's such as: "Treat Her Like a Lady", "Lady Soul", "Soul to Soul", " Standing on the Top" and even "Stay" in the late 90's. Having released an album in the mid 2000's under the production of Smokey Robinson, the band would have it's final album.
Having completed so many great songs with much notoriety, The Temptations didn't so much lose their way, but, it was more that the Mo Town sound faded away, overtaken by hard rock and disco. Like all music genres Mo Town was becoming a memory of the 60's and lost its appeal to listeners. It would be the Funk scene that would ultimately seal the fate of Mo Town's top artists. Funk had the dancing as well as some great songs that would take the mostly black listeners into another direction.
......................................................................................................................
The Four Tops.
The Four Tops are also a Mo Town sound and they too have many great songs and are also a talented song and dance band. With such great songs as "Can't Help Myself", "Reach Out", "Baby I Need Your Loving", "Ain't No Woman", "When She Was My Girl" and "Shake Me Wake Me", this great band was backed by an orchestra last evening and for over 90 minutes the band was pure gold. Like The Temptations, The Four Tops sung feel good songs about love and the reality of falling in love. Grateful too for their accomplishments, the band would reminisce throughout their time on stage how lucky they are to still be playing and how music has taken them to their dreams in life.
Listening to these two groups makes a person realize just how many talented musicians have come our way from the 1960's and beyond. It is amazing just how many great acts came out of Mo Town alone. Listening to these two bands tonight makes you remember just how many songs both groups produced. I am very happy that I got to get the chance to see such talent all in one special night!
Temptations. The Four Tops, Mo Town, Detroit, Michigan, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll, Disco, Soul, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, AC/DC.

Til Death
"Till Death" is filled with twists and turns; Abingdon Theater Company produced this play with direction by Chad Austin and it is effective both from the projection stand point (Lisa Renkel) and the set design (Teresa L. Williams). The plot is about a 75 year old dying mother, her second husband, Michael (Robert Cuccioli), her three children and grandson. As things slowly unravel we see the difference in the two girls, a brilliant Anne (Whitney Morse), a high strung Lucy, (Amy Hargreaves) and a son who is money hungry, Jason (Dominick Laruffa Jr). Playwright Elizabeth Coplan has written for the most part a good body of work that was daring and somewhat edgy. For 75 minutes, Coplan takes us on a journey. The conflicts between Michael and Lucy are monumental. Lucy sees her step father who is also a widower as an interloper on the family. He sees her as overbearing and brusque.

The Sleep of Reason
The scene could be a selection from a feverish nightmare. It could simply be a metaphor for the callous "care" shown by the bourgeoisie toward the starving peoples of the Third World. Do they really get off on watching their victims twist in pangs of desire and hunger, while they dole out the literal equivalent of Marie Antoinette's famous cold-blooded quip?

Our Fractured Fairytale
I thought we were a story with a fairytale ending; a happily-ever-after. But you were a ‘close the book and burn it if you don’t like the chapter’ kind of person.

John Lloyd Young’s Solid Gold -An Evening Of Disco, Soul, and Magic
You have to believe in the magic. And enjoy every single minute of it as you face the music and dance - to the incredible sound of John Lloyd Young as he leaves his own special mark on a different set of classics.
Tommy Faragher and the band started us off with some “Boogie Wonderland”, setting the tone for this evening of Solid Gold. And from the moment JLY took the stage in a favorite tiger jacket, he was ready to rock our world.
He began with his own meaningful take on Luther Vandross’ “So Amazing”, touching everyone’s hearts from the very beginning. Then the dancing commenced as he picked up the tempo with the George Benson classic, “Give Me The Night”. Having the full Vegas band on stage added to the joy of the evening, as JLY mentioned that this era of music is a good period to feature band solos. We had plenty of them tonight, and each member shined on their own, as well as with the entire group.
The next song up made me smile, from the first seconds of the intro - Olivia Newton-John’s “Magic”. Other longtime friends and fans will remember this song popping up on JLY’s Tumblr account from time to time, and I had always imagined him singing it. Now we actually got to hear him perform it - and it was better than any of us could have possibly imagined. I hope this song makes an appearance in future sets as well.
JLY’s voice took the spotlight on “If I Can’t Have You”, made famous by Yvonne Elliman. The richness of his baritone, paired with his soaring falsetto, made this the perfect choice for him. He followed it up with Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing”, which he has performed a couple of times before, but not for quite a while. It was a great addition to this night filled with funk and soul classics.
Speaking of classics, he brought back one of our fan requests again and made it even more powerful. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was first made popular by The Supremes, then again by Kim Wilde. JLY’s version is already more soulful than both of those - now with the full band added on this one, all I could say was “WOW”. Songs like these show that not only is JLY a Broadway and movie star - he is truly a rock star.
JLY took a short break to let the band, dubbed Tommy and the Apostles, demonstrate their chops with “Disco Inferno” and the “Theme From Shaft”. You couldn’t help but get up and dance, whether in person at The Space, or at home in front of your computer - a completely fun experience.
When JLY came back to the stage, he did a gorgeous rendition of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love”, then turned around and made Earth, Wind and Fire proud with a breathtaking version of “Fantasy”. He mentioned how intricate the second song is, and he nailed every nuance perfectly.
Next was one of his originals, “Till The Storm Is Done”, this time done with more of a funk-style treatment. It sounded amazing, and I’m willing to bet that the recording of it will be just as good when we get to hear it on the new album that is coming out soon. JLY also talked about how he and Tommy are often influenced by this era of music when they sit down to write.
He also said that he often gets requests to do songs by The Stylistics, so tonight he put his own spin on “You Are Everything” - and the result was stunning. Another request that usually comes up is to do other Frankie Valli songs...so this time he performed Frankie’s disco version of “Our Day Will Come” - and made it even better, just like he does with so many of the songs he chooses to sing.
The evening ended with a well-chosen pair of songs. “Kiss and Say Goodbye”, a 1975 hit for The Manhattans, was a standout. He nailed the spoken word portion at the beginning of the song, and it just got even better from there. Then he did Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”, which we all love. Hmm...I have an idea - since at one point former President Obama sang this song, and JLY was on his arts committee, could we get them to make a duet of this? Hey...you never know, it could happen!
For the afterparty, Tommy Faragher sang “Look Out For Number One”, his hit from the movie Staying Alive, that he once performed on the show Solid Gold. Then JLY performed “Hurt”...along with two of his originals, “Slow Dawn Calling” and “Almost There”. Both of these are favorites, and it was so good to hear them again with the full band. After that, he had some fun interviewing a few audience members whose names were pulled out of a hat. To finish the evening, those of us watching from home who purchased the meet and greet were treated to a Zoom call with JLY, where he answered a few of our questions.
This particular livestream is not available on demand afterward...but the memories from the one night only live performance will stay with us for quite a long time. Thank you to everyone involved for an evening filled with joy, soul, and pure magic!

creative claims — weekend
summary: for @fmdjiah full composition / partial production. minjung’s friends with some bc A&R rep, and does a favor by sending in a few tracks made by her. warnings: none wc: 1059
don’t cross enemy boundaries, or that’s what the public wants you to think.
in hindsight, she’d raise the concession to that one. an exception when a phonecall with one of her friends, prop open in the middle of the night. “seo minjung~” the voice sing-songs against the quiet white noise of daybreak, and minjung can tell by the slur — her friend’s had one too many drinks.
“what are you calling me for? to be your dd?” minjung responds quietly.
“no~ i have a question… do you have any songs you want to throw my way?”
“and give a song to bc? you forgot, i’m tied to gold star. sealed and kissed in a ribbon.”
“come on~ help a friend out.”
“get home safely, and take a certification shot. then, i’ll see what i can do.”
minjung hangs up the phone, settling aside in the nook beneath her desk. she goes back to the files stored on her harddrive, buried deep into the graveyard of songs once constructed never touched again. she takes a few listens, skims through the seconds of beats that leave her at a standstill — before she turns away to another file.
the first few rough beats, an attempt at city pop — she figures, it’s perfect for the weather. perfect for the year all year-round, any time of day.
(nobody tells you how to deal when your friend’s a bc a&r rep, and working on enemy lines).
-
the song starts itself when she drives through too many downhill rabbit holes of the internet. one youtube video to another, all following suit with the japanese city pop that drums through her speakers. it’s one of those heartwarming, feel-good genres — the kind that leaves you bumping on your toes, yanking the smile upwards on your face as you bop your head from one side to another.
and when inspiration strikes, she makes her own attempt at it.
she pulls the synth out, and figures — any type of music, it’s not made for her. it’s pure fun, just as music is supposed to be.
the first few notes of the electric guitar synth, play the base. a few chords in, drifting in an out in a continuous staccato — she marks that down, whatever lyrics used might be fun to ruffle with the tap tap tap of the staccatos here. because the basis of city pop, is the simpleness of complexities — the simple rhythm that follows a cohesiveness the full way through, mixed and funked by the synth and the over electro-sounds.
she tries to mimic it, but it doesn’t fit. instead, the pieces remain wayward and jagged, so by the time she draws a blank — she falls back into the percussion. the bass line comes as easy as palm slaps against the table, a steady metronome of a snare kick taking precedence as the bottom line of the song. now, the lines remain less jagged — somewhat obfuscated by the juxtaposition of electric lines and guitar. it lacks the softness, too much rigidity before she falls back to square one, palm in cheek staring at the busy screen.
it deals with the editing — or that’s what she thinks by the time her keyboard stows away, and she’s relieved those with the mouse clicks fishing from one filter to the next. the smoothness of city pop, and easy flow through of disco all crash down to the basics: one simple filter, overlaid by another until the emergence building up to what she perceives as the chorus.
so, by the time she hums along — incoherent words to no lyrics written, she goes with the hms and light fall of the verse into the chorus. the simple melody, carried from one to another — the guide vocals, void of any words.
yet, there comes a standstill in the bleak wall after the first chorus.
palms pressed to her face, it’s scrutinizing and imagining each piece not knowing the outcome of what the picture’s supposed to present. amorphous, the song becomes stagnated by the simple melody that graces through — until, she comes full-circle, decides a minuscule slice of a rap might hone in the missing edges.
no words written once more, she carries herself with the doo-dooo-doos of a rap, playing vocal metronome as her hands click away to remove the filter — leaving the raw electric guitar and the percussion at bay.
at this point, the song’s a half-mess. half-her own project coming to light. if given to gold star, she knows it’s a red flash of a no — impending. or maybe, it’s just the late night pessimism leaving the track on repeat as she closes her eyes and listens from start to finish.
whatever it is, she realizes, it doesn’t hurt to add anymore. thinks, perhaps, creating a calamity of sounds, all brought together by the synths and the disco up-beat funk centralized in the song, wouldn’t hurt. but before her mind pieces it, her hands already move from the keyboard to the mouse. then back and vice versa — an ode to the retro oldies, there’s an addition of another layer added in the beginning. the sounds of an old-school cassette tape, cutting in then cutting out, the 32 bit filter, blurring out the hums of her voice to something scratchier.
it’s a resolution to bring her creation back to what it began as. an ode to the old city pop, added disco funk — something she colors pink.
the track has her on the edge of her seat, nodding her head to each beat of the percussion base and the overlay of the subtle backing vocals. the synth clocking right in the middle of the first verse, to the build up of the chorus. it’s ethereal, a dazed dream of cotton candy — lighting up her midnight blues with a grin across her face.
yet, it’s not a song for her. just a prelude bite of her imagination, before she closes up her computer labeling the track “pink.”
-
when she scans her files through songs, she goes one after another — flitting from one to the next. still, it’s the track titled “pink” that she turns back to.
one drag of the file, and she sends it to her friend. one quick smirk before she types away “present. if this does well, you owe me.”

Reviews 312: Joe Morris
I’ve had considerable difficulty putting down my thoughts concerning Joe Morris’ Exotic Language, though not because of the music…a sonic paradise so panoramic and immersive that my mind is completely overwhelmed with hyperbolic descriptors and imagined fantasy landscapes. No, the difficulty comes from determining how to properly contextualize the work of an artist whose music has meant so much to me over the last few years and who has been a constant guidepost as I’ve explored this vague soundworld we all call “balearic”. So perhaps it’s best to go back to the beginning, which involved me trawling through the Is It Balearic? Discogs page picking out titles whose label art resonated with me…visuals that captured some indefinable spirit of beachside meditation and solar fantasy dancing. This of course led me to Joe’s Golden Tides 12”, the label art of which was given over to impossibly beautiful sunset scenes, ones that were washed out into a sparkling tapestry of golden radiance. It was exactly what I was looking for and from then on, I’ve been in a near constant love affair with the producer’s work, which has led my spirit through so many wonderful musical environments, whether it’s the mystically inclined Bahia EP on Balearic Social, the Cloud Nine 12″ on Wonder Stories, or the increasingly esoteric remix work of Clandestino, Joe’s party crew and studio project run in conjunction with Iain Mac and Nick J. Smith, who have perfected a particularly tripped out style of jacking dancefloor ritualism.
But as great as those works are, the undoubted high point for me came with the release of Jacaranda Skies on Pleasure Unit, an EP that opened Joe’s sound up considerably and foreshadowed many of the adventurous environments he would travel to on his epic full length. Across the 12”, the listener was treated to a tropical house slammer, a futuristic acid jazz ritual, and one of my favorite tracks of recent memory, “The Lost Garden,” which melted the heart with timeless string descents while mallet instruments danced amidst sparkling synths, reverberating guitars, and island percussion exotica. After the release of Jacaranda Skies, I just knew Joe had to drop an album, one that would allow his increasingly adventurous and cinematic sonics to spread all the way out, unrestricted by space or time considerations. Thus I was completely blown away in 2019 as my fantasies came true in the form of Exotic Language, the producer’s magnum opus and a near perfect summary of the many colorful sonic universes he has visited across his career. It’s a true album experience, with well considered track sequencing taking the listener on a oceanic dream journey encompassing Italo deep house, Chicago club workouts, spiritual Afro-trance, ethereal pop-ambient, acid-laced downtempo, aqueous guitar mesmerism, amorphous dub, and so much more. And though mostly realized as a solo effort, including the fantastic artwork, Joe is joined by some crucial guests in the form of Private Agenda and his son Milo.
Joe Morris - Exotic Language (Shades of Sound, 2019) We open on “Firefly Beach,” with guitar swells creating aqueous ripples amidst cricket chirps and crashing waves...the vibe not unlike Onyricon’s “Sweet Dream.” Plucked harps flow through interstellar fluids and synthetic arps smear into seafoam as momentum builds, with hand drums and cymbal taps leading to a low-key climax of downbeat ocean grooving. Tambourines shake through layers of brass synthesis and basslines blur in and out of focus…all while crystalline tones descend amidst solar flare vibrato orchestrations. Next is “Perfume,” a collaboration with Private Agenda that, if released in the 90s, would have appeared on every single balearic comp, so closely does hit that essential seaside pop vibe, with touches of ethereal R&B married to oceanic chill-out in away strongly evoking the work of Afterlife, especially “Dub in Ya Mind (Beach Club Mix)” and the legendary “Speck of Gold.” Rhodes keys sparkle, big bottomed jazz breaks keep the body vibing, and dreampop guitars swim through ether as funk basslines slide through sexual smoke. Elsewhere, pianos constructed from ocean glass play melodies of dream melancholia alongside blazing string themes and laserbeam sequencing. And carrying the whole thing is a chilling vocal performance from Sean Phillips, his multi-layered and soulful hooks pushing the heart towards pure sunset euphoria. Our first taste of club fire comes via “A Dance With Jupiter,” which touches on Chicago house as well as the intense rave workouts of Clandestino. The track starts with loon calls, spectral rattles, mermaid hazes, and bongos popping over tubular basslines before we flash into a jacked out four-four house groove. Anxious cymbal work cuts up the air, electrified claps crack on the beat, and waves of angel synthesis wrap around the spirit while elsewhere, we breakdown into smacked kicks, brass heatwaves, and hand drum tribalisms. And as acid lines filter in from the void, the track snaps back into a tech house fever dream, with increasingly wild 303 patterns spraying neon liquids over anthemic chord riffs while 90s rave whistles are danced around by polychrome pan-pipe tracers.
At the start of “Echo Station,” cymbals flow through timelag generators, guitars flutter, and hand drums pop through mutating fx chains until we drop into a subsonic bass groove, with dubwise drum beats pulsing through a stoner paradise. Weirdo reggae riffs wiggle in each ear, with organs and trumpets mutating into insect psychedelia and metallic chords wavering through delay-soaked mirages. Spacey six-strings shimmer, pianos skip across new age sunbeams, and flutes execute LSD dances as the rhythms refuse to coalesce, creating that classical drug touch…a sort of fevered fantasy space where everything constantly shifts through humid layers of rainbow fog…the vibe not unlike the recent work of Androo. There’s a moment where the rhythms fade to gas amidst rimshot cloudforms while anthemic ocean wavefronts fade in, with touches of ambient prog glory shining through the deep blue hazes. Fantasy sequences climb playfully towards the clouds and synthesizers filter into neon magic as the dub riddims finally return, now with piano starlight sparkling amidst drunken brass fanfares. Next comes “Celestial Plantation,” wherein pads settle like a ghostly ocean fog, one aglow in prismatic hues of mother-of-pearl. Birds chirp, waves crash, and hand drums cascade through delays before blurring into a flutter of blutterfly wings…all while bass pulses give the abstracted groove a touch of tribal body magic. Melodic brass themes peel away to reveal sparkling gemstone electronics and electro cymbals hiss across the spectrum as the vibe grows ever more blissed out, with the spirit soaring on waves of coral colored euphoria. The heart overflows with balearic majesty and all bad vibrations are washed away by starlight electronics and glowing melodic crystals as Joe sets the body afloat via gaseous chill-out rhythmics. And best of all, there are these glorious moments where the spirit seems to rise above the clouds, with synths swelling and white noise hazes parting to reveal spiritual whistle tones and elven pan-pipes…a sort of new age paean to the spirits of the sea pulling the mind towards a beachside oasis, with palm trees blowing in a tropical wind while birds of paradise flit amongst the fronds.
In “Dream Clouds,” galactic vapors rattle amidst an angel choirs comprised of male cyborg breaths and glimmering fairy voices. A four-to-the-floor pulse is accented by acid bass jacking, hi-hats spread into ticking psychedelia, and clipped snares give the beat a faint disco pulse as we soar through Joe’s own paradisal imagining of Italo dream house....a euphoria-kissed fantasy world of lush dancefloor exotica…spread out, gaseous, and with billowing waves of ether stoking hallucinogenic visions. Filtering phasers infuse the aqueous pad motions, paranoid rimshots transform into kosmische energy tracers, and feedback marbles glisten in cold solar light as the snares and claps fire in that distinctly Clandestino way…the mind never allowed to settle while pushing ever closer towards hyperventilated delirium. Elsewhere, kicks pull away for a machine jazz jam, all rigid robot bopping before slamming back into fantasy dance magic, with blistering chords ringing out, white light pads bending into dolphin sirensong, and crystalline chords conversing with reverb-soaked cricket chirps. “Acid Safari” hits similar notes of freaky forest acid as “Mangrove Dawn” from Jacaranda Skies, though replacing that track’s ritualistic percussion flow with fat-bottomed rave breaks and a dubwise bass skank. The baggy and zoned out 90s-style beat science is accented by industrial tom-tom splatter, echo-soaked hand percussion, cave crack snares, and mechanized cymbal hiss, with the mix increasingly suffused by monkey howls and orchestral heatwaves. Sunbeam guitar percolations and syncopated synth riffs morph through delay layers until the vibe grows murky, resulting in a mystical environment of dispersed rhythms and machines that growl like jaguars. Cosmic acid lines diffuse in and hand drums carry the soul towards the heart of the jungle, with sunlight filtering through the dark tropical growth in the form of six-string echo dances. Blasting back into sunshine rave breaks and dub-kissed psychedelics, mutating acid lines roar at the edges of the mind and as we move towards the end, saloon-leaning Rhodes chords portend a cinematic western sunset while string synths melt towards an impossible horizon.
There’s some mystical magic happening within “Spirit Walker,” with Joe taking deep inspiration from Larry Heard as he crafts an ambient house epic. But that’s not all, for amidst the mermaid choir fantasias, harmonious whalesong hazes, and clouds of cyborg psychedelia, snare drums rattle into a free jazz fever dream, shakers keep a hypnotic pulse, and hand drums alight on adventures of Afro-beat intensity…the track coming together as some inspired amalgam of ecstatic future dance energy and ancient tribal magic. Animalistic acid lines growl down low and dream house piano chords blur through sunset colorations until eventually being replaced by pure trance vocal synthesis…these chopping waves of angel bliss pushing the mind towards transcendence. There’s a moment where the basslines pull away, leaving behind a gaseous world of spiritual jazz, wherein pianos decay while cinematic pads are surrounded by whooshing layers of aquatic ambiance. Then, as we slam back into Afro-house firedance, balafons and kalimbas weave in and out of the Goan voice layers…a mix of idiophonic rainfall and slow motion trance ecstasy that could float my spirit forever. Closer “Milo’s Theme” begins with morphing synth chords…like pianos obscured by alien foam. Hovering sea-spirits radiate aquamarine while dream sequences dance ear-to-ear and after a gaseous burst, we flow into an immersive groove of downtempo drumming and bongo tropicalia. Chopping vibrato hazes diffuse in and out of empty space, guitars sing spiritual songs of seaside blues, and gemstone melodies flow upwards as feedback tracers mimic sad seagull cries. Then, the rhythms disappear and the song gives over to a new age soundbath, one that celebrates the newness of life with joyous baby babbles (sourced from Joe’s son Milo) and bubbling strands of melted ocean glass. And after a climactic reprise of sunset groove majesty, with layered guitars, tremolo psychedelics, and squelching piano chords hovering over post-rock rhythmics and balearic beat expanses, we return again to a world of ambient sea-spray, abstracted echo weirdness, and gurgling infant breaths.

future nostalgia - dua lipa
album review
In the summer of 2017, one of my first jobs ever involved filling sample bottles of oil which purpose was to be poured onto pet food in order to give them ~silky smooth~ and healthier fur. I sat for hours on end in my hot ass garage filling 8oz bottles from big ass, blue oil drums to be shipped out to pet care companies that would give them out as essentially free samples. it wasn't horrible BUT it was god fucking awful. During those hours of manual labor, I took it upon myself to past the time by listening to music, as one does. that summer, i got VERY familiar with (for example) halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom, kesha’s rainbow, as well as one very amazing self-titled work, dua lipa; dua lipa. this album dropped around the beginning of the summer (june 2) and was a pretty standard 12 track debut, pop record. i was already vaguely familiar with miss lipa’s work via her dope ass tracks, hotter than hell & blow your mind (mwah) both total bops that were released before the drop of self titled. now, when i say this bottle pumping job went on for hours in order to fulfill the required amounts I needed to meet overtime, i was able to listen to A LOT of music. that summer, this album ruled my life. with a voice of gold, dua’s star potential on self titled was so apparent right off the back. with tracks like genesis, homesick, IDGAF, the two previously mentioned, and the earth shattering new rules, this girl was ready to step on our spleens right out of the gate. i spent so much time with this album it really defined summer 2017 for me. very pop, but done in a such an original manner with unique takes on production and lyrical content, self titled was stamping its name on the world of lesser-known pop (this was before her blowup). i was so infatuated with this record but I noticed the traction wasn’t following. for months on end it, it really seemed like dua lipa was just going to be an indie artist forever, which there was nothing wrong with that, i just always thought she had the potential to go the distance and become a global sensation (not to say she wasn’t successful, her popularitiy was only growing in the UK, but was stunted for a while in the US). welp, then it happened. almost like a light switch, her song new rules was everywhere. there was no escaping its radio influence. the breakup anthem with hints of female empowerment was infectious and incredibly well-down, jump starting her career from that point forward. The inevitability of her success leading to multiple successful collaborations (electricity, one kiss) all the way to her winning the best new artist award at the 2018 grammy’s. now if you know anything about entertainment award superstitions, you may have heard of the infamous curse of the new artist. basically, this says that who ever wins this award each year will then cease to keep their relevance-ball rolling in the years to come (meghan trainor, alessia carra, etc.). dua lipa said lol i don’t feel like doing that, and with that we were gifted her newest work, future nostalgia.
upon initial teasing during the tail end of last year, this project was something I was VERY much looking forward due to just how much lipa’s first album impressed and satisfied my admitted love of pop music. when don’t start now dropped, i was worried. while now i think it is a total effing disco banger, i wasn’t a huge fan at first, but upon multiple listens and the dropping of the first promotional single and also title track, future nostalgia, i knew this album was going to hit just as hard, if not harder than her debut, and boy was i right. future nostalgia is everything and then some. i might just be speaking for popheads and lipa stans alike here, but this body of work completely embodies what the title entails. a sexy mixture of 70-80′s disco dance funk with current pop and futurist aspects (granted, I wouldn’t go as far as to say this album is ‘experimental’ per sé, it still sticks with some pretty trusty and popular formulas lyrically and form wise). future nostalgia is 11 tracks (oddly specific) of pure fun. this record is a white bitch ass shaker, it makes you want to get the fuck up and have a good time (i cannot wait to drink to this record). some of the standout work here consists of honestly most of the tracks, but the best of the best cuts are most the singles with the inclusion of levitating. my god, levitating is a banger. the pacing of the album is a great choice as well. while most of the tracks hold disco elements and some danceability, the story of the sequence of tracks makes it all the more unskippable. the track physical is a total 80′s reminiscent tour de force of a dance floor ranger. something i love about lipa is her ability to use lyrics (no shade) that lean towards more simple patterns and rhythms, but her melodies and production carry what she has to say to fluently and effectively. the very last track, boys will be boys, offers a sense of political commentary about the struggles and fears women face on the daily. i appreciate the use of ‘boys will be boys, but girls will be women.’ dua does not give a fuck about your misogyny, rightfully so, and a great way to end her sophomore body of work.
if anyone were ever going to beat the curse of the sophomore slump, i’m glad it was pop goddess, dua lipa. future nostalgia is an easy contender for aoty and it’s only march. this album was exactly what at least i needed to survive this corona quarantine. Regardless of the the lack of range in thematic content, this is record is a bop through and through. I didn’t know if it was possible for dua to top her self titled, and i don’t even know if it is fair to compare these two bodies of work due to the obvious sonic differences, but as of now, i’m leaning towards FN, damn near pop perfection. i stan.
future nostalgia - dua lipa 4 1/2 stars

The Gibson ES-335
“Yeah this guitar is the one that I played the majority of my sessions and solo records on. The choice to get the 335 was actually a very practical choice for me. So I play a lot of different styles of music and I wanted to get a guitar that could cover a lot of bags, so I didn't always have to switch to a bebop guitar for this...blues guitar for that...this one covers most of the bags that I want to play or was called on to play.
So that's how I ended up picking the 335, and the little store I went to in 1969 to buy a 335, there were three hanging on the wall and I chose this one because it sounded the best to me, and the rest is really history, isn't it? Brand new...yeah 1969...although I ended up carrying everything but this one seemed to cover most, so I didn't have to keep pulling a new guitar out."
-Larry “Mr. 335″ Carlton
***
The “big three” of the electric guitar are the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster, and the Gibson Les Paul. The extent to which these three models dominate just about every era is about as close to complete as possible.
The Telecaster has had an almost total lockdown on country music since the 1960′s. I’ve since deleted the posts, but in my rundown of the greatest guitarists ever, a legitimate 2/3′s main guitar was a Stratocaster. And the louder music became, the more the Les Paul came into play...the guitar which, thanks to Jimmy Page and Slash’s iconic imagery, might be the defining guitar of rock music.
Of those three, the two Fenders would be on most guitarist’s lists of most versatile...with some compromises. The Les Paul can get around ok in cleaner settings, but not like the Fenders. It’s just too thick of a sound and, combined with the humbucking pickups, overdrive amps at lower volumes. Where the Fenders are crystal clear, the Les Paul is muddy.
Enter the ES-335. Arguably the most versatile electric guitar.
***
There are variants of the ES-335 that I’m going to lump in just to make things easier. The ES-345 and ES-355 both had fancy things that the 335 didn’t...mainly a variable tone switch that was fucking stupid, and a Bigsby tailpiece that knocked you out of tune and was fucking stupid. Oh, the 355 had an ebony fretboard with block inlays...you’d know this one as BB King’s “Lucille.” They all sound about the same.
If you want a rundown of notable users of the ES-335 and its variants...Eric Clapton (above), BB King, Freddie King, Chuck Berry (and Marty McFly), Dave Grohl, Rich Robinson (Black Crowes), Otis Rush, Alex Lifeson (Rush), Chris Cornell, Roy Orbison, Alvin Lee, Larry Carlton (Steely Dan and a million other people), Duane Allman, Eric Johnson, Joe Bonnamassa. If we include Epiphone variants, we can add Gary Clark Jr. and Robben Ford to the list too. I guess the Beatles too, if we’re doing that, but fuck them.
What makes the 335 different than the Les Paul...even though many guitarists consider them relatively interchangeable (as long as you’re not playing anything high-gain)...is, obviously, that it’s hollow. Kinda.
***
“Semi-hollow” refers to the solid block of maple running down the middle of the body, which the pickups and neck are mounted to. The top, bottom and sides are made of layers of laminated maple, the two parts are pressed together, and there you have it.
A kinda solid body, kinda hollow body, hybridy type thing.
It still has a lot of that heft that a Les Paul has, and adds a sweetness the Lester sacrifices power for. And while they absolutely cover a lot of the same ground...personally, I consider them interchangeable...the biggest differentiator is if you play jazz, it’s the 335, and if you play high gain stuff, it’s the Les Paul. Solely due to the 335′s feedback issues from being hollow.
That sweetness is what makes the 335 so versatile. That heft the Les Paul brings to the table is a liability in lighter styles of music. Not light in terms of “smooth jazz” or whatever, but in terms of requiring a musician to be nimble. Genres like funk and R&B and country don’t need a guitar sound that’s huge and heavy and in your face. But the 335 has clarity, and that clarity is what makes it a more versatile instrument.
***
youtube
So if you’re reading this and thinking that I’m setting this up as some sort of “335 is the greatest guitar” type thing, you’re not far off.
Everything that Larry Carlton said about the 335 at the very top, I said when I bought my Fender Stratocaster. The reason I went with a Strat over a 335 was a value proposition, more than a musical one...I got my Strat and a professional-quality leather gig bag for $1,500 while you’re going to spend about $3,000 on a 335 (average-condition used 335′s from undesirable Gibson eras start the pricing around $2,300). Combine that with the Fender not having Gibson’s fragility issues*, again, it was almost purely a value proposition...you can’t play a guitar if it’s in the shop.
*The Gibson headstock is angled backwards in order to ensure a proper break angle for the strings passing through the nut. While this gives every string the proper break angle, it creates an Achilles’ Heel where these beatifully crafted instruments that feel like they could go through war, can actually be rendered useless with nothing more than a fall from a couple feet.
But make no mistake, essentially from my 2nd year of music school, I knew the 335 was the guitar for me. I’ve played hundreds of 335′s and its variants. Played a ‘59 with mini-block inlays in Dallas, a ‘62 sunburst at the Dallas Guitar Show, a Memphis Custom Shop gold top in Nashville, a ‘69 ES-345 here in Cleveland...
Not to mention countless “regular” and Custom Shop models at various guitar stores through the years. The 335 is a natural landing spot for jazz guys who play rock and blues, and it was where I naturally gravitated towards. Before I bought my Strat, I had passed on opportunities to get a 335 because I knew how well they suited my style of playing, and how many opportunities I’d have down the road to pick one up.
I could say that “I miss nothing when I play my Strat” but that’s not true. I miss that heft and control you get with humbuckers, and with the 335 I get some of those Strat qualities without the Les Paul’s muddiness. It’s just...again...the Strat was half the price and I can beat it to shit without feeling bad.
***
The 335 doesn’t have the stardom of the Les Paul, which is fine.
While there are some stars who used a 335 variant, in reality, the 335 was designed for the guys behind the star. Despite it being a huge instrument in either red or super glossy black, it’s an instrument made for the background. The stars can pick and choose what they want to play, but if you’re hired to support that musician and cover a ton of bases, you want something that gives you the most bang for your buck.
Things are different today, but back in the good old days a professional backup guitarist might be asked to play jazz, country, blues, rock and maybe even disco in the same night. There are really only two guitars that can cover all of those bases and not miss a beat, the Strat and the 335.
Now, I haven’t included many sound examples on purpose.
Philosophically, I boil guitar down into two macro “tones”...clean and dirty. This is in reference to level of overdrive...you can play clean but still dirty, like funk rhythms...as well as dirty and clean, like playing precise leads with a lot of overdrive. But if we’re talking about music in the middle...i.e. not extreme metal or sterile minimalist stuff...you can break it down into clean or dirty.
Effects, processing, all that shit that goes down with pedals and modelers and simulators...all that stuff is, is a more convenient way to improve a lacking sound. The better your playing and note choice is...something only possible with hours and hours of experience...the less reliant you are on these things, and the more the equipment you do use shines.
Larry Carlton is known as “Mr. 335.” His biggest solo hit was titled “Room 335.” His home studio is known as “Room 335.” He reached the pinnacle of the session world, despite not really playing on as many sessions as his peers, because of how incredible his skills as a musician, producer and bandleader were. And he did almost all of it on a 335.
He’s the perfect guitarist to use as an example of what the 335 is capable of. These tracks have no effects, are just Carlton straight into a Fender Tweed Deluxe. The first track “Josie” is a clean example...just listen to the beginning gutiar part and then the fills during the last 45 seconds of the song...beautiful clean tone. The second is “Kid Charlemagne”...the comping during the verses has great clean tone too, but focus on the leads. Especially the closing solo during the last minute. It’s very overdriven, very saturated, but still clean where the notes are distinct.
That’s the beauty of the 335.

Ahogyan nekem is adnak tippeket mások listái. Köszi mindenkinek a közös gondolkodást!

A lot can happen inside a year, particularly in a world so fickle and trend dominated as pop music. Hence having been everywhere and anywhere for much of the previous year, 2014 was, by comparison, a very quiet time indeed for Olly. In fact, the only signs of him still being present in the public eye came in the form of a couple of one-off charity appearances, and also that June, at his now bi-annual venturing out onto the pitch at Old Trafford for Soccer Aid, a celebs and pros football match raising money for UNICEF (Olly has played five times in total for the England team now, and captained them to a win at the 2018 match).
For the first time since the start of his career, he was able to go take time out purely to focus on music (and in his words 'grow a beard and get fat'), hence the first nine months of 2014 were spent cooped up in the studio, writing and recording the songs that would go onto make his fourth album. Things certainly changed in a big way, for during the time Olly was away, there seemed to be a sudden explosion of solo male competition in the charts.
Ed Sheeran was now the biggest popstar on the planet, having just released his multi-platinum second album 'X' and huge hits like ‘Sing’ and ‘Thinking Out Loud’, and Sam Smith and George Ezra both released their debut efforts this year. It was clear that whatever Olly decided to come back with, it would have to make as big an impact as possible to remind people he was still at the top of his game despite being away for the best part of a year.
So already there was a lot riding on 'Wrapped Up' even before he unveiled it with a world exclusive first play on national radio at the beginning of that October. Coming off the back of the biggest selling album of his career to date, it made business sense on paper to repeat the formula of that album's trajectory again - launching the album with a killer floor filling pop stormer that just so happens to have an international guest star on it, even if some critics suggested it was a lazy move.
Owing sonic motifs to disco classics by Evelyn 'Champagne' King and - in a spooky forbearing of his future work, though he didn't know it then - Nile Rodgers and Chic, 'Wrapped Up' was a guitar driven dance pop funk workout with a stormer of a chorus and a cheekily placed double entendre involving locks and keys that screamed chart topper from the first play. The appearance of a guest rap from Travie McCoy, the lead rapper and founder of Gym Class Heroes, who had also scored big success with Bruno Mars on his worldwide hit 'Billionaire' in 2010, enhanced its credentials further.
One thing that Olly had also quietly achieved in the UK - without anyone realising it at the time - was the unique distinction of being the only British male solo artist to notch up a number one single with each lead release from a brand-new album. It surely stood to reason then, that 'Wrapped Up' would be joining that list and making it four in a row. However, several changes of circumstance meant this didn't go according to plan.
youtube
International promo was the focus from quite early on in the campaign, with the single being released and promoted in Australia first before we got it here in the UK. It meant that no thanks to an administrative error at Sony Music - who'd been slowly releasing select tracks off the new album as 'Instant Grat' teasers - that 'Wrapped Up' was mistakenly available for a couple of days to download off the UK store of iTunes two whole weeks before its official UK release date. One can only speculate what might have happened had they corrected the error sooner - but then this was compounded by another turn of events.
With just over a week to go until release, Olly then recieved a call from music legend Sir Bob Geldof, the man who'd put together the historic Band Aid single 'Do They Know It's Christmas' and subsequent Live Aid concerts to raise money for those living in developing countries. Olly was asked if he wanted to appear on the 30th anniversary recording alongside the likes of Bono, Chris Martin, One Direction, Rita Ora and Ed Sheeran, and he duly obliged.
As he returned to The X Factor live shows to launch 'Wrapped Up' proper with a homecoming performance on its release date of 16th November 2014, Sir Bob was there too to give the first play on terrestrial TV of the video for the Band Aid 30 recording of 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. He jokingly apologised to Olly on air after his interview with Dermot O’Leary, who now knew full well that 'Wrapped Up' was set to miss out on the top spot.
Seven days later, and this is exactly what happened. Even outsold by 'Real Love', the then new single from contemporary dance pop outfit Clean Bandit, who'd had a phenomenal year with their hit 'Rather Be' with Jess Glynne (and whose then violinist, Neil Amin Smith, was incredibly vicious about Olly on social media at the time, stating he was only fit for a low rent musical theatre career. He left the band over a year later and hasn’t been heard from since. Go figure), 'Wrapped Up' had to be content with a #3 debut and peak - still a great chart position, but by no means what was needed at this point.
It meant that Olly was on the UK's number one single that week, but just not the one he intended, with Band Aid 30 selling over a quarter of a million copies to top the chart, despite a heft of negative reviews and feedback from music critics, social commentators and soapbox preachers alike for the new version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' on Twitter. Along with ‘Wrapped Up’, it was absent from the top 10 by the time Christmas came.
Despite the chart topping success of the parent album, and being a top 20 hit in thirteen other countries (including Japan, where it gave him his first chart topper), it was clear from the performance of ‘Wrapped Up’ that things had slipped a bit compared to the mammoth fanfare that had greeted ‘Troublemaker’ two years previously, and it wasn’t unfair to say that Olly suddenly had something to prove five years into his career. Fortunately, another huge single was waiting in the wings to quell those doubts...
OTHER THOUGHTS
A remix from top dance DJ and producer Cahill was the main B-side on both the digital bundle and the Europe only CD single. UK fans were also treated to the non-rap version of ‘Wrapped Up’ and a special acoustic rendition of the track recorded for the website of Fabulous, the free glossy magazine that comes inside the Sunday edition of British national newspaper The Sun. Olly has appeared on its cover more times than any other male star to date – since 2011 he’s made a total of seven appearances.

✰ BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2018 ✰
✰✰✰✰✰ 6th ANNIVERSARY ✰✰✰✰✰
Neil Morris, speaking to Alan Lomax in 1959:
“Well, when I was just a small boy, Old Uncle Milt Oldfield…Billy Oldfield, the Congressman from Arkansas for so long, it is his father. He and my father are awfully close friends. And they were discussing music. They were music teachers both of them.
“And uh, and they said, dad did and Uncle Milt sanctioned what he said, that MUSIC HAD NO END. That you could learn all the other guy [or girl] learned, and after you got that done they would then, something else would crop up. That uh, that you, that was the reason why that uh, music advanced. That’s why that you would get a better music in one generation maybe that is, uh, IT WOULD FIT THE TIMES IN WHICH THEY LIVED.”
[Lomax: “What about music on the grapevine?”]
“Welllll, they said that MUSIC GREW LIKE THE GRAPEVINE THAT IS NEVER PRUNED. That each year it’d…it’d put on a little bit more. That was what they said, now, about it. Any further questions?”’
It’s time to feast from 2018′s Grapevine That Is Never Pruned with 123 (+ 162 more) of the BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2018!
A prefatory note: The Best Reasons campaigns of our first five years endured critiques from far and wide about too many damn records listed. Well...we can no longer countenance such reproach. Every single one of these nuggets is an essential thread in the tapestry of 2018′s combustible sonic arts! We here at FRR stand for ecumenicism and as such, consider the breadth of our listening parameters: Feeding Tube Records issued 74 items in 2018 (!), Clean Feed released about 80, and Astral Spirits about 30...that’s a lot potential gold in those three labels alone. Sure, it’s too much for any one person to absorb, but still...
We all know that some combination of easy access to home studio tools, world wide web streaming, social media delirium, legacy record industry collapse, and artistic resistance to creeping authoritarianism has (somewhat paradoxically) unleashed a tidal wave of idiosyncratically great music during the past decade, so it should come as no surprise that such a list as this would contain nearly 300 essential items. Yea, it seems nearly everything gets recorded and released these days (especially the zonked improv/collagist /noise/outer limits realm), but whether or not we listen to such items as frequently as we consumed Exile On Main Street or Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy back in the day is irrelevant...the time is now, and as far as wild sounds from the outer dimensions goes, now has unprecedented bounty...listen heartily, for tomorrow, who knows?
(...all long playing records unless otherwise noted...also, the list was made complete with links, but grrr they don’t show up, so point your browser as they used to say and happy hunting!)
