Marinette, work in progress - Ch4 - BlueCollar
Read also on AO3: here first chapter | previous chapter | next chapter
Marinette took the short path home as she hopped, still transformed, towards her balcony. No sooner than reaching her room, she thrust herself into her bed and her face into her pillow.
“Spots off.”
The suit dissolved and Tikki emerged, hovering about. She was quick to pick up on Marinette’s distress.
“Marinette, is everything okay?”
Marinette turned her head towards Tikki, peeking just a tad out.
"No.” She tersely replied, then turned away again. “I’m not fit to be a superheroine.”
“What? Why would you say that?” Tikki shuddered.
“Why? because I’m not even a real girl and I nearly failed because of that!”
Tikki just stared back, wordlessly.Marinette slowly rose up and sat upright at her bed.
“If being a girl is so much better for me… why wasn’t I just born one? Maybe I should just accept my fate. I can’t win this one.”
Marinette tried to look away as Tikki hovered in front of her, denying her the option to end the conversation just yet.
“Maybe fate has crossed your path with the miraculous because of that? Because your burning desire to be a girl means something?”
Marinette looked back, contemplating Tikki’s words.
“All it means is that I’m a wannabe and that I’ll end up embarrassing everyone who believes in me. Like Alya and Mylene.”
Marinette recalled the conversation back at school lunch. Alya and Mylene sure seemed to think very highly of her.
“They sure don’t seem to think that way, and they should know a thing or two about girl power.”
That much was true, even Marinette had to admit it.
I don’t know Alya and Mylene that much and yet they’ve both already managed to impress me, Alya for standing up to Chloe and Mylene for standing up for what counts in this city. Maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to brush off their instincts, and take their trust as affirmation.
“What is it that makes you think you’re a boy, Marinette?”
Marinette’s mind screeched to a halt.
I might not be a true-born girl… but I’m not a boy either. What the hell am I, again?
“I… I don’t know anymore.” she whispered and Tikki smiled.
Marinette flared up her computer and started looking at some of her designs. She followed by reading some of her hidden computer diary entries.
The more she looked at her designs, the more she read into her diary entries, the muddier the answer in her mind became.
Maybe these tell the story of what I am better than everything else? What is it that makes a design “a girl’s design”? Or a story “a boy’s story”?
Before she noticed it, it was time for dinner, followed by shower and bedtime.
---
It was the last thing Marinette thought would happen to her. Chloe was the first to point at her and explode into mocking laughter, interrupting the morning’s lesson.
“Look at Marin! What’s Gay-boy doing with pink trousers in class?”
Instinctively she tried to cup her breasts, but they weren’t there anymore.
Oh no… the magic… it… dissipated? But… how? Why?
Soon enough, most of the class burst into laughter. She braved a look at herself and her heart sank.
She was back in her boy-suit, the one she thought she had discarded already. The sensation of body hair that she did not miss, back to haunt her.
Everyone laughed at her. Even her teacher! Caline bustier, otherwise a fair and decent teacher, joining up with class, pointing at her.
No. No no no. This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening!
She tried to scream, but only muffled sounds came about. She tried to run away, but she felt like her muscles betrayed her. The sounds of laughter echoed around her, piercing her soul.
“Gay-Boy! Gay-Boy in pink!”
She decided she must gather her energy and leave class, but felt herself jerked upwards instead.
Into a seating position, in her bed, covered in cold sweat and panting heavily.
“Are you okay, Marinette?” Tikki flew by, worried.
“It was a nightmare.” she blurted out.
A most vivid one, that’s bound to come to life as soon as the magic dissipates.
Marinette woke up early that day, still exhausted from the night. The sight of herself in the mirror did quite a bit to cheer her up.
It’s not a dream after all. Maybe if I hold onto it, it won’t slip from my grip.
She combed and tied her hair neatly, brushed her teeth and went downstairs to have her breakfast.
“At least you won’t be late today, honey.” Her mom smiled at her.
Having a properly-paced, non-rushed breakfast also proved helpful for her mood. She walked towards school, hoping that the new day would bring relief from yesterday’s battle and that awful night.
---
Mylene was one of the first to enter class, picking up the aptitude test results from the teacher’s desk.
While she feared many things, math wasn’t one of them. The good grades were sure to make her parents happy and perhaps more lenient in letting her go out on more activities like she had wanted.
Then again, someone next to her was clearly unhappy about their test results.
Ivan seemed to be very happy to see her come over, but immediately switched his looks back to his test results and gloominess was quick to take hold.
“What’s the matter, Ivan?”
Ivan paused before spitting it out.
“I… barely passed it. I was this close to flunking it. I’m no good at maths.”
Chloe kept filing her nails as she overheard their conversation.
“Oh, don’t you worry about it, there would still be plenty of higher education options available for people like you.” she commented.
Ivan looked at her, dumbfounded, while Mylene eyed Chloe suspiciously.
What’s she planning? Is it a rare moment of kindness, or a ploy to make things worse?
“ Ecole-de-imbecile , of course. You’ll eke out a meager living hauling boxes for people like me who will run daddy’s hotel.”
And to think I believed it could be the first for even a split of a second.
Ivan grit his teeth and looked like he was about to respond, then looked at his test results again.
“... Up until you become totally useless, at which point you’ll probably find yourself homeless in the streets, your wife dumping you, if you ever had one in the first place. Guess that’s too bad.”
“Chloe, you’re the meanest! Ivan is-” Mylene tried to protest but Chloe was quick to shut her down.
“-a loser, and the world doesn’t need losers in it. Sorry, that’s just how it is.”
Ivan clenched his fist and ran off to the locker room. Mylene looked at Chloe accusingly for a brief moment, only to refocus her attention on following up on Ivan.
---
Light intruded upon Hawk Moth’s domain as his senses picked up on a victim of choice.
“Fear of the future. Fear of who you may become. Uncertainty. Go forth, my precious akuma, let his self-doubt seal the fate for Ladybug and Chat Noir!”
---
Marinette was walking through the corridor, looking at her aptitude test report card, when Ivan nearly bumped into her. She dodged it at the last moment and was quite surprised when Ivan said nothing.
He is usually very nice and polite, despite his brutish looks. That’s not like him not to apologize.
Something must have happened. This doesn’t look good.
Before she had much time to dwell on it, Mylene came about, looking around.
“Marinette, have you seen Ivan?”
“Yeah, he went that way.” She said as she pointed out the direction. “Has anything happened?”
“I’m tempted to just say ‘Chloe happened’”, Mylene replied, “but she’s outdone even herself.
She told Ivan his test results set him for a life of failure.”
“How mean!”
Mylene nodded.
“He deserves so much better than that.”
With that, she rushed forwards to search for Ivan, leaving Marinette behind with more than one thing to think about.
Does this one test really set up our fate for the future?
Of course not! I mean, I’m sure Ivan can change it!
Are we the masters of our own fate, or has it been written for us?
Then again…
She looked at her hands and imaginary boy hands were superimposed on them.
Is my fate in my own hands?
---
The butterfly easily homed on the sobbing student in the locker room, landing on a decorative pin he was wearing.
“ BlueCollar , I am Hawk Moth. Your fate has been rewritten, your destiny now changed. You shall lead a revolution.”
---
Marinette was just leaving class as a confrontation outside on the street drew her attention. It was Chloe and her dad, the mayor, arguing with a figure that seemed like a large and sturdy construction worker.
“Shouldn’t you be doing your job?” Chloe yelled at the figure. “Daddy, tell him!”
“How insolent. I don’t report to you. I’m BlueCollar and I report to Hawk Moth.”
Chloe and the mayor shuddered at these words and tried to back away slowly, but BlueCollar wouldn’t stop.
“Maybe you two will finally do something useful for the people of Paris!” BlueCollar went on and a blue streak of energy engulfed the two of them.
Chloe found herself donning a sanitation worker’s uniform and holding a broom. In a moment, magical compulsion forced her to start cleaning the street, much to BlueCollar’s satisfaction.
Marinette was quick to hide in a nearby alley.
“We’re needed. Time to transform! Tikki, spots on!”
Marinette emerged from the alley, with Chat Noir arriving at the scene at the exact same time.
“Please, Ladybug, Chat Noir, save us from this fate!” Chloe managed to say before BlueCollar’s magical compulsion forced her to tend to her work again.
Marinette barely managed to stifle her giggle.
Isn’t that some poetic justice out there. A taste of your own medicine, Chloe. Maybe a few hours of work would do you good.
Marinette and Chat Noir both hopped on to a higher ground to make plans. Then again, one of them had plans the other probably did not think of.
“So. BlueCollar’s power is making people work for him. We must avoid his strike at all costs.” Marinette remarked.
“We have more than enough work without his powers employing us. But would you like to go for coffee once our work is done?”
Marinette froze in place as she tried to digest his words.
“Huh? Are you… asking me out?”
He flashed a grin.
“Well, all work and no play is a major hassle. I’m a playful cat, try me”
He can’t be serious. My god, what’s wrong with him?
“A playful cat.”
“Uh-huh.”
“And your game is... prowling about, hunting down a superheroine for a superhero.”
“Yep.”
“Swooping someone, from partner to lover. Oh, such brag rights! A game with a prize!”
“I don’t see why not. If you’re into it...” he smiled.
My god. He really knows no limit.
Marinette poked him in his chest.
“Do I look like I’m some prize to be won, partner?”
His smile faded in an instant.
“We save Paris together. Save your romantic aspirations for someone else.”
She then pointed his head towards BlueCollar as he went towards the city hall. “Does this look like a game to you? No? Then this should be your focus.”
Both Marinette and Chat Noir darted down to confront BlueCollar, avoiding his zaps successfully but making little headway.
Chat Noir managed to strike him with his baton, only to feel the recoil as he proved far too sturdy to be impacted. Marinette fared pretty much the same, as he simply flung her away with her own yo-yo.
Making things worse, they were quickly approached by a league of BlueCollar’s supporting workers, armed with whatever they were using for their jobs.
“Looks like we need some pest control.” One of them remarked as he eyed Marinette.
“And a feral cat problem to handle.” another added, looking at Chat Noir.
“Hate to disappoint. I’m fully domesticated. Cataclysm!” Chat Noir called it as he touched the ground, creating a chasm and allowing both Marinette and him to escape to safety.
“Well, we don’t have much time, do we?” Chat remarked and Marinette nodded in agreement.
“It’s time for my thing, then. Lucky charm!” she called it, cupping her hands to grab a falling...
״Miner’s helmet? What am I going to do with that?״
She briefly flicked its headlight on, then flicked it off.
“Okay, Chat, here’s the plan”
---
BlueCollar kept roaming the streets, until something caught his eye. It was an open manhole in the middle of the road, with an electricity cable running into it.
Clearly, someone was doing maintenance work in a negligent and extremely unsafe manner. No markings whatsoever, no signs to ward off pedestrians and no one to call should help be required.
As BlueCollar approached the manhole, Chat Noir jumped downwards from a nearby building and landed forcefully on his back. BlueCollar fell forwards and upside down, finding himself jammed into the hole, unable to move.
The hole was dark as night, although in a moment he was blinded by what seemed to be a flashlight. A short while afterwards, he managed to see it for what it was - Ladybug wearing a miner’s helmet.
“This site does employ some workplace safety” she commented as she walked slowly towards him. He could only watch as she removed his collar and broke it in two, releasing the akuma.
“No more evildoing for you, little akuma. Time to de-evilize!” she called it, as she whipped her yo-yo and whisked it away.
“Miraculous… Ladybug!”
As she flung the helmet upwards, it burst into a stream of Ladybugs, releasing all those bound to work by BlueCollar’s powers, including Chloe and her father.
---
“Pound it!” Ladybug offered her hand for a fistbump, and Adrien’s was quick to respond in like.
“You’re not mad at me, are you?” he offered cautiously.
“It was a close call” she replied, her face showing little emotion, but she quickly softened. “But you do make a great partner. Respect my limits and it will stay that way.”
She followed by a short-lived smile, then hopped away and disappeared.
Adrien’s eyes followed her wake until she was gone from his sight. He breathed in relief, then sighed.
“I guess it’s just partners then. Even if I…”
Even if I want it to be more than that.
I’ve met the girl of my dreams… and I nearly ruined everything.
Is there any way I can get her to see me as more than that? Or are we fated to remain no more than partners?
---
A now de-akumatized Ivan made his way back to class, where Mylene was quick to warmly greet him.
“I’m sorry, Ivan. It’s just one test! And if you want, I’d love to help you with maths.”
“You would? That’s… that’s so wonderful!” Ivan beamed at her words, his joy clear to everyone around. Yet Mylene had more to say.
“But for your own good, you really shouldn’t let Chloe get to you! You’re the kindest person I know and that’s worth so much more.”
“I usually don’t… it’s just that… well…”
Ivan was blushing furiously now as he picked his words.
“I had plans to confess to a girl today and then Chloe just sapped all my confidence.”
“Oh? Who would that be? I-If you don’t mind me asking...”
There was a short pause before Ivan managed to say it.
“It’s you.”
“I was hoping you would say that.” She replied, a wide grin to her face. A moment later, she hugged him tight and his blush deepened by two shades.
“Aww, these two are meant to be together!” Rose said as she dug herself into Juleka’s arm.
---
Marinette smiled as Ivan and Mylene hugged each other, some of their elation sweeping her as well.
Maybe some of our fate lies in the hands of others who love us, that’s not so bad too now is it?
What does fate have in for me?
I seriously hope it’s more of an ‘Adrien’ direction than a ‘Chat Noir’ one!
Chat’s a good partner… and that’s where the line gets drawn.
But Adrien… He’s something special. I got to see a glimpse of a soul so pure.
It’s time for me to take fate into my own hands, and I will.
A girl’s fate.

The Substitute Ladybug: Chapter 8
After Lila takes things too far and Marinette ends up with a broken leg, Paris is going to have to deal with a different superhero arrangement for a bit. Having to share her superhero identity with her parents before Hawkmoth can be defeated isn’t something that Marinette had planned on doing, but- well, it might end up being a bit of a blessing in disguise.
links in the reblog
Marinette had gotten as far as the gate in front of the Agreste mansion when she realized that, like her house, Adrien's place had stairs. Unlike the Dupain-Cheng household, the mansion didn't have any sort of lifts on the stairs, or an elevator like the school.
She hadn't remembered to consider that. Really, she should have, and then she should have talked to Adrien about it before school let out for the day to figure out what he wanted her to do.
Worrying her lip, Marinette step-hopped forward through the gates as they swung open. She could probably figure out the steps- she had been working on it during her physical therapy, it was just that normally she had people behind her to steady her- or just scoot herself up the stairs on her rear, but neither seemed like particularly good ideas. The first sounded dangerous, and the second-
Well, Mr. Agreste was all about appearances, and scooting up the stairs on her butt wasn't exactly a good appearance. And after it had taken so long for Adrien to get permission to have Marinette over in the first place, she didn't want to do anything that would get her immediately booted out.
With a deep breath, Marinette readied herself to go up the steps. She had only just gotten herself in position to start hopping her way up, though, when two large hands grabbed her shoulders and lifted. Before Marinette could figure out what was going on, she was being carried up the front steps and through the front door as it smoothly swung open. The carrier- it had to be the Gorilla, based both on the size of the hands and the height at which she was being unceremoniously carried- continued forward at an unchanging pace, all the way up the set of stairs in the entryway and right to the door of Adrien's room, where they came to an abrupt halt.
Marinette didn't doubt that if Adrien hadn't been standing in front of his door, cringing as he took in the sight of her getting hauled in by her shoulders, that the Gorilla would have continued straight into his room without missing a beat.
And then Marinette found herself scrambling to get her feet under herself as the Gorilla set her back down, just as abruptly as he had picked her up. He lingered long enough to make sure that she wouldn't fall over, then headed off without a word.
"I am so, so sorry," Adrien murmured as he opened the door to his room, standing back to give her plenty of room to get by. "I mentioned that you might have trouble getting up the stairs, so- well, I was trying to ask about if we have any elevators or ground-level entrances, honestly, but. Uh. He just decided to do that, apparently."
Marinette giggled, unable to help finding it funny now that she wasn't being taken off guard and manhandled up the stairs. "He decided to interpret that as him needing to be a human elevator, apparently. I would have preferred a heads-up, sure, but I know he was just trying to help."
"I think he forgot that even if I'm used to him picking me up and moving me around without warning, not everyone is," Adrien said with a sigh. He stepped around Marinette, pulling out a chair for her so that she could sit down. "Really, I'm sorry about that. We can find some other way for you to get back down the stairs later on."
"It's fine," Marinette insisted. She sat down, scooting up to Adrien's desk. "So, what are we doing first- photos or schoolwork?"
"We should probably at least get out our homework," Adrien admitted. "And get started on it. That way, if Nathalie sticks her head in, we can claim that we've been working on it the whole time. Or that we're just taking a quick break from studying."
Somehow, Marinette doubted that Nathalie would fall for that. Whether or not she would let it slide, though, was another matter. Sometimes it seemed like she was willing to help and cover for Adrien, while other times she ratted him out and interfered with Adrien's attempts to get together with his friends. Which way she went seemed to depend on the day.
How Adrien put up with that, Marinette just didn't know. Having to be around adults who blew hot or cold at random had to be super hard.
It didn't take long for them to set up their things, and sure enough, Marinette heard the quiet click of a door as they started work, giving away that someone- Nathalie, probably- had just poked her head in to make sure that they were actually working. Adrien glanced over at the door at the same time, and Marinette knew that he must have heard it as well.
And she had thought that her parents were nosy. At least they wouldn't care if they were actually doing homework or not.
"We should definitely try to study together more often," Adrien said appreciatively as they worked their way through their science and math homework. "It goes really fast with both of us. If I had to work through these problems on my own, I think it would probably take twice as long."
Marinette smiled and nodded. She had been about to say the same, honestly. When she and Adrien hit a snag with a concept that they weren't quite getting, they would either both toss ideas back and forth until they had figured out what they were messing up, or they would dive into their books and onto the computer to find something that explained the concept better if they really had no idea where to start. They hadn't really worked together that much before, so the ease with which they clicked and worked as a team was- well, a little surprising.
Surprising, but definitely not a bad thing. If they were really productive, then hopefully Nathalie would let them hang out together more often, without so much hassle.
"Okay, we have probably fifteen minutes before Nathalie checks in again," Adrien murmured seconds after they heard the third click of their study session. He paused, listening closely, then pushed his chair across the floor to grab a small photo album that had been tucked alongside his desk. "So my mom made this photo album. It's a secret from my father, technically. It's all of the photos that he hates, for whatever reason, but my mom thought were cute or funny."
Marinette's eyes got wide. That- that sounded like the kind of this that Mr. Agreste would probably destroy, if he found out that the album existed. "And it's not been- well, destroyed or anything?"
"No, I keep it hidden. And I have digital copies, in case anything ever happens to it. I don't think my dad would mess with it, though. My mom thought it was cute, and he-" Adrien paused, swallowing. "I don't want to think that he would destroy anything that she liked so much. But it's better safe than sorry with him, honestly." He took a moment, then scooted back to Marinette's side. "There's- uh, okay, there's a lot of baby photos in here, honestly. Just ignore that. But further along..." He flipped through the pages, and Marinette had to restrain herself from trying to catch a peek of what Baby Adrien (or Toddler Adrien) had looked like. If he wanted her to know, then he wouldn't be flipping through so fast. "Aha! Here's the toga."
Marinette took one look and had to clap a hand over her mouth to keep from bursting out with laughter. "Oh my god. That- how did you not trip over that?"
"Okay, the first iteration left something to be desired," Adrien admitted. "To be fair, I was nine, and I had no idea how togas were meant to work. And the sheets on my bed- well, I have a big bed. And I wasn't a particularly big nine-year-old."
"The first iteration?" Marinette asked, puzzled. She frowned. "I thought your father would have put a stop to it."
"He tried, but it wasn't like I was just dressing up for fun," Adrien told her. "My mom pointed out that I had a reason for it, and then she got me a smaller bedsheet and looked up how to tie a toga. And she had access to safety pins and everything, so..."
He turned the page, and- oh, that wasn't fair. How did Adrien look so good while wearing- well, just a bedsheet with a belt around it?
"If Father had taken any longer to make cast-friendly pants, my mom and I were planning on ordering some kilts in my size," Adrien told Marinette. "Not for wearing out, necessarily, but to bug Father a bit." He laughed. "I kind of regret that I didn't get to do that, actually. I would have loved trying on a kilt."
...well, now Marinette wanted to make him one. It would be an interesting experience, and maybe she would learn some skills that she hadn't really dealt with before. But that also ran a very real risk of ticking Gabriel Agreste off, and considering that she had already ticked Audrey Bourgeois off this year...
Maybe that was a project for another time. Or at the very least, a project that could not be shown off beyond the confines of her house.
"Maybe Father got mad, but when Mom was here and made sure that he wasn't taking it out on me, it was fun," Adrien told her. "He might huff and puff but there wouldn't be any consequences."
Unlike there would be now went unsaid. Marinette had to wince on his behalf, because that had to be an unpleasant change to get used to.
"Anyway, there were a couple days of togas, and then I had my new cast-friendly pants to wear," Adrien finished, flipping the page. It was another page of him posing in different togas, each made up slightly differently. There were different belts, then a couple brooches to hold the toga together, then a deep red one that was clearly not meant to be worn out, considering that the back dragged out like a royal cape. "But it was fun while it lasted, and it was probably- no, definitely- the best part of having a broken leg."
"There's not much good about being on crutches," Marinette agreed. "I mean, Lila's gone, so that's good. But if I could have just, like, sprained my ankle and gotten a few bruises instead but gotten the same results, that would have been so much better."
Adrien grinned, clearly about to respond, but a noise near the door had them scrambling to hide the photo album and turn back to their books before they could be caught. When they heard the telltale click a minute later, they exchanged conspiratorial glances. Adrien's was tinged with an impish smile, and Marinette was sure that she was no better.
Being around Adrien like this was fun. Marinette had gotten tastes of it before, of course- it was hardly as though she and Adrien never hung out together by themselves- but it had never quite been this side of him, impish and rule-bending and all poorly-concealed grins and twinkling eyes and muffled laughter.
And Marinette wanted to see it more. It was easy to be relaxed around Adrien when he was like this. They could joke around and just hang out and not be thinking too much.
Or maybe she was just more relaxed because she wasn't thinking about asking him out. That had been her mom's theory when they had been discussing Marinette's crush and how it was going a few evenings back, and Marinette had to admit that she made a good point.
(Also, her mom seemed to know a lot more about Marinette's attempts to ask Adrien out than Marinette remembered telling. She suspected that Tikki might be telling her a lot, which- well, normally Marinette would be mad about that, but honestly, Alya could have told them just as much.)
They had brought up another very good point when they said that it might not be the best idea to date while she was still fighting Hawkmoth and Mayura. Apparently her parents had heard quite a bit from Alya complaining about Marinette missing out ("forgetting") on things that they had planned, and translating that to a dating setting...
Well, it wouldn't be a good idea with anyone. And with Adrien, who was already regularly let down by his father promising to show up to things and then simply not bothering- well, it would be borderline cruel, even if she didn't mean to leave him on his own.
Focusing strictly on being friends for the time being would definitely be better, Marinette decided as she re-focused on her work. Next to her, Adrien was tapping a faint beat on his notebook with the end of his pencil as he focused on the next question. She didn't want to lose Adrien's friendship because of her duties as Ladybug pulling her away unexpectedly. Once Hawkmoth was defeated- well, then she would have the time to dedicate to a relationship.
Marinette glanced over at her phone as it let out the oh-so-familiar chirp signaling an akuma attack, then up at her teacher. Ms. Bustier didn't appear to have heard (though maybe she was just choosing to ignore it, considering how many students had that alert on all the time), so Marinette slipped her phone out of her purse and checked the update.
Oh. That- that looked like a difficult akuma. It was flitting back and forth quick as lightning, too fast to spot anything on it that might be the akumatized item.
It would be hard to fight that, even with Second Chance. She just couldn't give out instructions fast enough to keep ahead of the akuma. Marinette puzzled over that for a second, then quickly excused herself to the bathroom and made a break for it, hopping to a supply closet in the hallway instead. One transformation and a Portal later, and Marinette was back at her house.
"Are you getting more Miraculous?" Sass asked as Marinette hopped across her temporary room to the box where she had hidden the Miracle Box. Kaalki was perched on her shoulder, inhaling a quick snack to recharge, and didn't seem at all bothered. "Or are just fighting from here instead of the closet because it's nicer?"
"I want another Miraculous," Marinette told him, pulling the box out. "I thought that the Bee might be a good choice. And- well, I'm not sure if I should give it to Chat Noir or to my mom. In theory, we'll only need one Sting. And if I give it to Chat Noir and he misses, we have Second Chance. But if my mom gets it..." She frowned, pausing with her hand hovering over the Bee's comb. "Actually, Sass, would giving my mom a second Miraculous be a good idea? Master Fu didn't tell us about the fusions right away, so is it not a good idea to have newer Miraculous holders fuse like that?"
"Yeah, it's- well, sometimes it's fine, but new users do have a tendency to tire more easily with fusions," Sass told her. "They're not as acclimated to the magic, and for it to double and for the powers to be used multiple times..."
Marinette winced. "We'll have Chat Bee again, then. I don't want to risk my mom falling ill."
Sass smiled. "That's probably wise."
With that decided, Marinette scooped up the comb and called for Kaalki. With a flash, she transformed, immediately grabbing her horseshoe to find where her mom was. Coccinelle was on the move, which would make catching her next to impossible, but Chat Noir was paused in one place, clearly waiting for instructing while staying a safe distance back from the akuma.
Well. She would just go to him, then. It would be nice to see Chat Noir in person again, even if- well, even if it was only going to be for a few seconds while she handed over the Miraculous.
"And that's a nice flat rooftop, too," Tianma murmured to herself, narrowing her eyes at her map one more time to make sure that she went to the right spot. "Okay, portal!"
The portal shimmered into being in front of her, and Tianma hopped forward on her Miraculous-provided crutches, making sure to jump high enough to clear the (thankfully low) threshold of the portal. She had barely landed when suddenly, her feet were off the ground once more.
"Bugaboo!" Chat Noir exclaimed in her ear, clearly delighted, and Tianma breathed a sigh of relief. He had startled her, but to be fair, she had returned the favor with the sudden unannounced portal popping out of nowhere behind him. "What are you doing out? Is your mom not coming? How's your leg? I didn't expect to see you today! How are you doing?"
"Slow down, kitty," Tianma ordered with a giggle. "My mom is coming, I just had to deliver the Bee. This akuma is super fast, and I think the only way for us to take them down fast is if we immobilize it. And my mom was already headed out when I made that decision, so I came. And my leg is- well, it's healing. Still."
"I wish it would heal faster," Chat Noir told the top of her head. "I mean, the short fights are great and all, and your mom is super cool and helpful, but it's not the same."
"I can't wait to get out again, either," Tianma admitted. "Being stuck at home and not being able to do everything that I'm used to- it sucks. And I have another three weeks before the cast comes off! Initially I had been hoping to have a lot shorter recovery time than more people because Tikki had said that the Miraculous makes us heal faster, but the doctor doesn't know that, so of course he's not going to look at my leg early." She had made that particular realization only a couple days ago, and- well, she still wasn't over it.
Marinette knew that the doctor had said six weeks, but she had really been hoping that Tikki would be able to get her recovery time down to, say, four and a half. Or five. Anything but six.
"Well, it's still going to help you get back out faster," Chat Noir told her, and Tianma pulled back enough to be able to look up at him in confusion. He raised an eyebrow at her. "Bugaboo, you know that just because the cast comes off, that doesn't automatically mean that you're 100% again, right? There's supposed to be several weeks of recovery afterwards, and the bone is still healing. If you didn't have Tikki's healing, you probably wouldn't be cleared to go back to normal physical activity again right away." He shrugged. "Or at least that was what I had happen when I fractured my leg as a kid. It sucked, and it- well, it was just super hard to remember that I still had to be careful after the cast came off."
Tianma's shoulders slumped. She- well, she had been counting down the days to when the cast would come off and she could go out as Ladybug again, but clearly she was being a bit too optimistic. "Oh."
"But like I said, Tikki should help with that part," Chat Noir added. "Maybe she can tell you more later?"
Tianma nodded. She would be questioning her kwami later on for sure. She didn't want to go forward with unrealistic expectations, so- well, she might as well find out sooner rather than later. "Yeah." She let out a long sigh and then, with a start, realized that- well, she hadn't just come out to chat with Chat Noir. She thrust the Bee's box at him. "Oh! Here's the Miraculous. Sass said that it would be better for you to do the combo- I thought maybe my mom could do it, so she would have multiple power uses, but Sass said that she's not used to the magic enough to do combos."
"Right, okay- Pollen, Plagg, combine!" Chat Noir called, and Tianma flinched at the bright flash of the transformation. He grinned at her- and oh, the jagged yellow stripes across his normal outfit would never stop being strange. "I'll do my best."
Tianma nodded, hopping back towards the portal. "Stay safe! And just send the Bee back with my mom. I don't want to have to recharge Kaalki an extra time."
"Of course." Chat Bee paused, then reached out for her, a light hand resting on her shoulder. "Hey, do- do you think we can hang out sometime? Like, for an evening? Not romantically or anything," he added hastily. "But I miss seeing you. It's not the same to just be hearing you."
Tianma didn't even have to consider that before she was nodding, completely on board with the idea. She missed Chat Noir, too, and- well, he was one of her best friends. They didn't get to hang out outside of the suit. "Maybe over the weekend? Not Friday or Saturday, because I don't want to disrupt your patrols with Coccinelle, but Sunday?"
Chat Noir nodded furiously. "Yeah! I'll bring some food- actually, you know what, I'll figure out the details with your mom," he said hastily when a loud explosion went off in the distance. "We've got an akuma to deal with. Back through the portal you go!"
With that, Chat Noir lent her a hand- or, rather, a paw- back through the portal into her room. It closed up behind her, and she detransformed and called on Sass.
"All right, down to business," Vipera announced, settling herself at her desk and getting set up as quickly as possible. She had spent far more time than she had planned with Chat Noir, and now she really had to get going if she wanted to be prepared for the battle.
Still, she smiled. Sunday couldn't come soon enough.
Ladybug (or, rather, Horsebug) Portaled to their secluded rooftop five minutes early, hauling a backpack stuffed with pastries that her parents had packed for her, plus an entire quiche that her mom had made specifically for them. Unsurprisingly, Chat Noir was already there, spreading out a large blanket and fussing with making sure that it was just so.
"I brought more food," Ladybug announced, stumbling a little as she hopped though the portal. Chat Noir was by her side in an instant, steadying her and making sure that none of her weight landed on her bad leg. "And my mom made quiche, she said it's one of your favorites-"
"Ooh, she's the best!"
"I'll not ask how she knows it's one of your favorites," Ladybug added with a sigh as Chat Noir helped her sit down on the ground- or, well, on a pillow on the ground. She released Kaalki and beamed at the kwami in thanks before turning her attention to her partner. "It seems like she knows quite a bit."
Chat Noir winced at that. "I- yeah. I know I've maybe said too much to her about secret identity stuff, but it's just really easy to talk to her, you know? It's kind of like having a mom again- sorry, sorry, pretend I didn't say that bit," Chat Noir added hastily. "But it's nice to have a parental figure that actually listens, so maybe I talk a little more than I should."
...Ladybug was really glad that Tikki had mentioned that she and Chat Noir might be able to reveal their secret identities at some point soonish. If she hadn't- well, Ladybug would probably be panicking about the additional accidental information.
"Honestly, part of it might also just be that- well, what are the chances that she would actually know me?" Chat Noir asked. "Civilian me, that is. She's an adult, she wouldn't run in, like, the same social circles anyway."
"Except my mom known pretty much everyone I do," Ladybug reminded him. "She knows my classmates, she still recognizes my former classmates, she knows my friends from out of class, she even knows a lot of kids . She's not one of those adults that don't pay any attention to kids."
Chat Noir considered that. "...oh."
"I've told her that she needs to be more careful with what information she mentions to me," Ladybug told him, already hating the way his ears were starting to droop. If having an adult who would listen to him made that much of a difference to her partner- well, that could potentially save him from akumatization, couldn't it? That was super-important. "Because she was assuming at first that you and I talked about the same stuff, so she would just refer to it like common knowledge. So she's not going to accidentally tell me anything now. And..." Ladybug worried her lip for a moment, then forged on. "And she- she already knows my identity. She knows that she has to be careful to not get akumatized. If she figures out yours, too, I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world. It would just be like how Master Fu knew about both of us, right?"
Chat Noir's entire being brightened, and Ladybug knew that she had made the right call. "I- right! Right, yeah, that- that was not the way I thought this conversation was going to go."
Ladybug had to laugh at that. "Honestly, me neither, but I know how much it's helped to be able to talk to my parents about everything in my life. I have Tikki, sure, but it's different, somehow. Tikki sometimes doesn't understand stuff in my normal life very well. And I don't think it's fair of me to deny you that."
Chat Noir pulled her into a wordless hug. Ladybug hugged him back, resting her cheek against his shoulder. She couldn't help but smile, completely content where she was.
"If I ever need to have a replacement Chat Noir, your parents would definitely be my go-to first choice," Chat Noir told her. "I mean, of course I'd rather be out there myself, but if I sprained my ankle really badly, or- heaven forbid- broke something- except I would have to know who they are, wouldn't I? There goes that idea."
"We could make it work," Ladybug told him. "I don't know how, but we could." She didn't mention Tikki's comment, not quite yet. It didn't seem like the time to.
Maybe once she returned to superheroing full-time then she could bring it up. Now, it just seemed too early and like she might be getting her partner's hopes up too early.
It didn't take long for them to settle down and unpack the food they had brought, arranging it across the blanket so that they could see everything. There was a lot- there was no way that they would be able to finish it all- but that just meant that there were plenty of tasty-looking choices. Chat Noir handed Ladybug a plate, and they dug in.
It was maybe a little strange, since- well, she and Chat Noir didn't really do this, hanging out and eating dinner. Patrols- when they did them, when they had the time to spare- doubled as exercise and training. They sometimes came out for speeches or events or dedications, but that was rare and they didn't really chat during those. It wouldn't be smart, not with reporters lurking nearby and ready to pounce on anything personal the superheroes said. And during akuma attacks, obviously they weren't going to be sprawling out on a rooftop and mindlessly chatting.
It was nice, though. Maybe- if they had the time- they could do this more often after her leg was back to normal.
"How's the Snake treating you?" Chat Noir asked as they finished up their slices of quiche and turned their attention to the petits fours that her parents had packed. "I don't think we've asked in a while. We got a few fights in with the Second Chance reset, and- well, now it's normal. But I have to imagine that it's super-tough on you."
"It's gotten easier," Ladybug told him. "I've gotten better at it, rather. It seems like I don't have to reset as often, because I've gotten good at spotting openings and incoming attacks. I've gotten Sass to give me more screens, so that helps. I have more angles to work with and watch."
"You're a regular Mission Control," Chat Noir said admiringly. "I couldn't do it. It sounds super hard."
Ladybug could only shrug sheepishly. "I guess. But I've gotten used to it, and it's a bit of a mental challenge, too. And I like a challenge." And she really, really did. It was like playing the world's fastest-paced puzzle game crossed with a fighting game.
"But aren't all of the resets hard on you? Like, seeing things going wrong again and again?" Chat Noir hadn't touched his petits four, instead fiddling with the end of his tail. Ladybug frowned at the question, puzzled.
Nothing had really gone terribly wrong during the fights when she was the Snake. Most of the time, it was just things not going nearly as well as they could have. So she said as much.
Chat Noir seemed really relieved by that.
Their conversation wandered from there, touching on the different battles and what they had seen from their perspective of the fight, then talking about things going on in the city. At one point, their conversation drifted towards the non-Miraculous side of their life, but they quickly backed off and changed the subject before they could say anything too identifying.
Maybe Tikki had said that they were getting closer to a reveal, but there was no point in running the risk of an early reveal before they were ready just because they got carried away with talking and teasing each other.
"Ah, it's getting late," Chat Noir exclaimed after he went to check his baton for something and caught sight of the time. "We'd better pack up and go home. I'm glad you could come out."
Ladybug smiled, leaning forward as much as she could to help pack up the leftovers. Her parents had definitely over-packed, and Chat Noir had brought more than they could eat, too. "I'm glad, too. This was fun. And it was nice to get out in this suit, too." She plucked at the red supersuit, smiling at the familiar outfit. "I know I've been transforming with the other kwami, and of course it's not exactly the same as my normal transformation, what with the crutches and the cast, but..." She trailed off, not sure how to explain it. Fortunately, Chat Noir knew exactly what she was talking about.
"Yeah, transforming with different Miraculous... it just isn't the same. I can't put my finger on exactly why, because- well, it's a strength boost, and you can just feel the magic, but it's not quite the same magic. It's like..." Chat Noir floundered for a second, his brow creasing. "Like if you're eating something, and the cook forgot one of the spices, or added a new one. But not like a strong spice. Like a really subtle one, and you'd only pick it up if you had it a lot."
Ladybug giggled, reaching forward to poke Chat Noir's stomach. "Talking about food already? You just ate!"
"There's food in front of me, that's why I thought of it!" Chat Noir protested with a laugh, batting her hand away. "Not because I was hungry!"
Ladybug giggled again before sitting back, content to let Chat Noir deal with packing up the food that was out of her reach. "I suppose it's a decent enough analogy. It's something subtle in the magic, not something obvious like the suit itself."
"Speaking of which- your Horse outfit is adorable," Chat Noir told her, pausing in his packing to beam over at her. "That tunic top over leggings? Very fashionable yet also leaning towards comfortable-at-home chic."
Ladybug beamed. "Thanks! I wanted to try something different. My transformation as Vipera has the same silhouette, actually. It's really comfy. And, well, it's not like I'm running and flipping around or anything. I can have a little fun with the design."
"D'you think you'd incorporate any of that design into your Ladybug outfit once you come back?" Chat Noir asked, clearly curious. "I mean, I can't see that particular design getting in your way while fighting. And it's cute."
Ladybug muffled a giggle. He had already mentioned that, which... well, was a clear giveaway that he wanted to see that sort of outfit more. "Maybe? As long as the tunic would stay down. And I would keep the higher neckline that I have now, just for safety reasons." Which honestly might throw off the composition of the entire outfit, since right now, with both the Horse and the Snake, she had a wider square neckline. Getting rid of that would get rid of the loose look that the tunic had. And- "Oh, and the sleeves aren't great for fighting. They're too loose. So- well, I guess that version of the Ladybug suit will have to wait until Hawkmoth is gone."
"Ooh." Chat Noir considered that, then smiled over at her. "Another motivation to take Hawkmoth down as soon as possible!"
"Flirt," Ladybug muttered, her cheeks red. Chat Noir just grinned at her, passing over the Horse Miraculous before helping her- or rather, lifting her- to her feet. "Thanks."
"Only the best for my lady!" Chat Noir chirped cheerfully. He grinned over at her as she put the Horse Miraculous on, the second part of her transformation washing over her. "Sweet dreams, Ladybug."
Ladybug smiled as she called on Portal. "You too, Chat Noir."
With a careful hop, Ladybug left the rooftop behind and landed back in her family's kitchen, her Portal closing up behind her. The basket of leftovers got unpacked into the fridge- except for a couple things set aside for the kwamis- and then Marinette headed to bed, unable to keep from yawning widely.
"It looks like you've had a good time," Tikki commented as Marinette washed up for bed. "Was it nice to see Chat Noir in person again?"
"It was great," Marinette told her, unable to help smiling. "I forgot how fun it is to banter with him. It's not a dynamic that I really have with any of my other friends, and I missed it." She tugged out her pigtails and started combing her hair before pausing mid-stroke. "It seemed different from when I last saw Chat Noir, though. When I last properly saw Chat Noir, before my leg broke, that is. He wasn't really flirting as much- or no, that's not right," she corrected herself. "He wasn't flirting seriously, that's the difference. We always flirt and tease, that's just how we are, but he wasn't trying to confess or ask me out or anything."
A smile flashed across Tikki's face before she hastily hid it. "He's growing up, maybe."
Marinette hummed in response, starting up her combing again. "Maybe. Whatever it is- well, I liked it. I like spending time with him."
"Do you think you're going to do another dinner together before the cast comes off?" Tikki asked. Marinette thought about it, then shrugged.
"If we have the time, maybe. We'd have to end earlier, though- it's super late right now, and I have school tomorrow."
Tikki smiled at that. "So yes?"
"Yeah." Marinette finished combing her hair and started tying it back up for the night, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, I'd like that."
The next morning, Marinette's phone started ringing before her alarm even went off. She groaned, swatting for it blearily, and it shut off. Moments later, it started up again, and this time Marinette sat up properly, picking up the phone and squinting at it to see who on earth was calling her at this time in the morning.
It was Alya. With a groan- she and Chat Noir really should have headed home sooner, she was exhausted- Marinette picked up. "Hello? What's-"
"Marinette! Marinette! Have you heard? Ladybug's been spotted! She's finally back!"

Y/N:
Time. Time is everything. At least working for Mr. Park it is. 32 days, I have been here for 32 days and I still shake with nerves every day.
8am: make sure the cooks have begun Mr. Park’s breakfast.
8:45am: breakfast is set. Mr. Park eats, alone.
9:30am: print all of Mr. Park’s appointments and place them in his office.
10:30am: prepare for appointments and point them towards Mr. Park’s office. Do not let them enter early. They must enter at the appointed time.
12:30pm: Mr. Park’s lunch should be set in the dining room. He will eat alone.
The rest of the day continues like that. It’s...a routine. A strict routine. Nothing should be done a minute later or a minute earlier. Though I’ve never seen Mr. Park’s anger when something is done late, I’ve seen the fear in the eyes of other workers when they seem to be running late.
Every 4 days the gardener is expected to do touch-ups on the large garden on the further right back of the house. The maid is to show up every weekday at 2pm and leave by 5pm. She cannot stay a minute longer.
Who knows why Mr. Park is so strict about these details, but I am determined to keep them. I am….the coordinator? That’s the best title for my position. I make sure everything runs correctly and on time. If anything is out of place, I’ll be the one to blame.
The coordinator before me was a frail older woman with a friendly smile. Mrs. Yoon was her name. She wore thick black-rimmed glasses and her years working here did not take away from her kind nature. Though she has told me that Mr. Park is a difficult man to work for. His expectations are high.
I expected as much. Such a time mannered schedule for one’s home life gave it away. However, I do not know what Mr. Park’s work life is either. I assumed his work must be successful to have such a big home, but no details were given.
“Do not answer, unless you are asked.” Those were Mrs. Yoon’s parting words. Do as little talking as possible and just stay on schedule.
Sounds easy enough. The workers know the deal and are able to keep up. They have no choice but to keep up.
The pay here is wonderful and the hours are good. 7am to 7pm, 5 days a week. The posting online for the position was vague, and I thought I was going to walk into some type of scam. I am glad that I took the risk.
Despite working here for 32 days, there is one thing that hasn’t happened. I have not met Mr. Park. I have not seen him once. My first week here, I thought I was being tricked. Is there really a man that lives here? The house is barely decorated, there is no personality to the place.
If it were not for the appointments that come in daily, I’d assume I was looking after a ghost home. I stood in the kitchen with the cooks, sitting at the circular table that was sat in the further end of the kitchen. That’s where we usually sit for our lunch breaks. I was about 30 minutes late to take my break. However, it was worth it, in the end, to see that Mr. Park’s lunch was prepared on time.
This is only the second time I’ve decided to stay in the house to eat. Going out to eat or ordering was always a hassle. Mr. Park’s house was on the outskirts of town, surrounded by a light forest area. The closest house was about a mile away.
I barely made it back in time to enjoy my food, and delivery men were always getting lost, resulting in my food being cold by the time I received it.
Ami, the head chef, suggested cooking lunch for me along with the other kitchen staff, seeing as Mr. Park allows them to do so.
I gladly agreed, and it’s been easier on me since. The food was amazing. Absolutely delicious and I couldn’t get enough. But as I sat at the table, enjoying the rice along with the side dishes, a thought entered my mind.
I glanced over at Ami who had just walked through the swinging door that led to the dining room.
Mr. Park is in the other room. This is the closest I’ve been to him, hearing some soft chatter from the dining room. Ami locks her jaw as she grabs a plate off the kitchen counter to join me at the table. The other kitchen staff has decided to go out to eat, seeing as they won’t need to be back for some hours.
“What’s up?” I asked, my brows furrowing.
“Mr. Park isn’t in a good mood today. He’s arguing with someone on the phone.” She explains, “Sowe really need to be on top of our game.”
I sighed, “He must be a grumpy old man.” I took another spoon of rice, not noticing Ami’s amused eyes on me. When I finally look up, it’s because her hissing laughs were breaking through.
I stared at her confused, not sure what was so funny.
“You’ve never met Mr.Park! I totally forgot!” She said in a small voice, “Did you think Mr. Park was an old man?”
I raise an eyebrow at her, “He’s not an old man? What is his middle-aged?”
“Not even close. He’s not even 30.” She mutters before taking a bite of her phone. My face scrunches up in question. Mr. Park is a young man?
“Huh.” I said letting out a harsh breath, “that’s interesting. I wonder what type of man is so rigorous with his time.”
Ami rolls her eyes, her long black hair pulled into a tight bun on her head. She wore her white chef’s coat with her loose black pants.
“All the times I’ve met him, he’s been very kind. He smiles and says hello, then goes about his day. He gives bonuses often, as long as you do your work properly.”
Before I could respond, I heard some noise from the dining room. Both our heads turned as we heard a crash, followed by a frustrated groan.
“Don’t send her!” The voice hissed, “I am not going to play these games with you!”
I look at Ami with wide eyes and she shrugs, “It must be a business call of some sort. Clients get on his nerves sometimes.” She took another spoonful of food into her mouth, glancing at the doors that led to the dining room.
My brows furrow in thought before I ask my next question, “What type of work does Mr. Park do?”
Ami freezes for a second, her eyes glancing around as she thought for a moment. She lets out a huff of air as something dawns on her.
“I don’t know, I never looked into it. I just cook his food, nothing more.” She gives me a knowing look. It’s clear that no one pokes to know more about Mr. Park. They simply do their job and leave. Fair enough. I know when to poke for more information and there isn’t any.
Even if I am a curious person, I won’t ask questions. I’d rather go about my work peacefully. It isn’t till we hear a distant door slam closed that Ami stands from her seat, a groan leaving her lips as she moves towards the dining room doors.
“You go on with your schedule, I’ll clean up whatever mess he left.” With that, she disappears into the dining room. I finish up my lunch, making sure to clean up my mess and set the plates into the sink. I rush out the other kitchen door, bringing me to the big looby area of the house.
“Mr. Park’s next appointments will be arriving,” I muttered to myself. It’ll be less than 10 minutes before they arrive. I walk through one of the doorways on either side of the grand staircase. One doorway led to the living room with the other took you down long and wide hallways.
I made my way down the hallways as quickly as I could. My grey pencil skirt wasn’t tight, however, it did restrict the full movement of my legs. My simple white blouse had long sleeves and was warmer than it appeared.
I learned after my first week that it was usually cold in the house. I had to figure out all the small things on my own. It’s always cold in the house, Mr. Park likes to keep the curtains drawn. He doesn’t like to see dust anywhere and his appointments are the most important part of his day.
He spends hours with just a single client at times, but he will never posh back an appointment for another client. The time they paid for, is the time they will receive Maybe he’s a therapist?
I rush into the small office that holds employee paperwork and other things. This is informally my office. I spend some time in the small room, making sure everything is running smoothly. I have two computer screens, one of them displaying all the security cameras in real-time. There is another office for security, but they rarely need to leave their space. I grab the red clipboard I’ve become accustomed to and my black pen.
I check the list of names and times, hauling myself through the hallway just in time to catch the outline of a body behind the door. The tempered glass on the black double doors that led into the house always made it easy to see when guests arrived.
It was noted that I should answer the door before they need to ring the bell. Mr. Park doesn’t like the sound of his doorbell. I rushed forward and opened the door, seeing an older man in a sharp suit standing with his fist up.
He must have been ready to knock on the door.
“Name?” I said trying to catch my breath. I glanced down at the clipboard, knowing it was Mr. Gwan.
“Mr. Gwan,” He answers, “I have an appointment for 1:15.” My eyes move to the clock hung up on the wall above the door. Just a few more minutes.
“Follow me,” I say, finally recovering from my running. Mr. Gwan closes the door behind him, and though it is my first time meeting him, I can’t help but stop my motions.
He narrows his eyes at me, his eyes moving up and down my body. I would usually be offended, but it wasn’t in that manner.
His hair was grey, with some traces of while in his eyebrows. His skin was wrinkled, showing his age. He was taller than me with a lean frame. His all-black suit reminded me of something that would be worn at a funeral.
“Do I know you?” He questions.
I chuckle awkwardly, “I doubt it, sir. Have you meet with Mr. Park before?”
“Of course,” He snickers, pointing towards the hallway. I smiled at him before I started walking again, with him following close behind. He knew where he was going.
“I come to see him every few months.” He giggles, realizing I must be new, “Mrs. Yoon finally retired?”
Though it was a question, he already knew the answer,
We turn a corner, Mr. Park’s office door just insight.
“Are you sure we haven’t met before?” Mr. Gwan repeats. We stop in front of Mr. Park’s door and I turn to face the man. His eyes held kindness. They were such a light brown, that they almost looked golden. It looked like they were glowing in the dimly lit hallway.
“I don’t believe so Mr. Gwan, I might just have a familiar face,” I gesture towards the door, “Please, Mr. Park is waiting for you.”
I stepped away from the door and watched as Mr. Gwan opened the door, and stepped into my Mr. Park’s office. The door wasn’t opened so widely that I could see into the office. I spun around on my heels and made my way back to my office.
For the next hour, I’m sitting in my room, going through the appointment booking email to make up Mr. Park’s day tomorrow. The emails never explain the appointments. Mr. Park simply sends me a list of the appointments he has approved and the few he hasn’t.
It wasn’t till I heard the hard taps against my window that I realized it was pouring down. Just as I turned to the window behind me, I caught a crack of lightning,
“Oh! it’s really pouring huh?”
I was sure it was going to clear up in the next few hours, but as I ushered in the last client, it was clear the rain wasn’t letting up. The man took off his drenched jacket and hung it up on the rack.
He’s a regular, so I gladly let him walk to Mr. Park’s room himself. I shut the door, wondering what exactly was going to happen. The wind was howling, the rain was pouring and thunder was roaring. There is no way an uber is gonna get through all this forest to come to pick me up. I am screwed.
The time was 5:30pm. Mr. Park has his dinner at 7pm, and my workday ends at 7pm. However, it doesn’t look like I’ll be leaving at 7.
It’s not long before Mr. Park’s workday comes to an end. The last client leaves and I am sitting there wondering what to do. Ami and the rest of the kitchen staff shuffled into my office earlier, voicing the same concerns I held. I sat at my desk, staring at the phone. All I have to do is press a single button to ring Mr. Park’s office. I don't know why I’m so nervous, seeing as he’s just my boss, this being my first interaction with him, I’d like to make a good impression.
I was pulled out of my thoughts as my desk phone began to ring, the light by the number one letting me know that it’s coming from Mr. Park’s office.
I answered quickly, not wanting to leave him waiting.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Yes, Ms. L/N?” A kind voice spoke, “this is Mr. Park.” He paused, almost waiting for me to respond.
I caught on slowly, finally replying with a small yes.
“Yes, the weather outside is getting worse. The storm won’t pass for the rest of the night. You and the rest of the staff are welcome to stay the night. I have enough room.” He states, “Please make sure the rest of the staff know.”
The phone clicks before I could even reply, leaving me with the hung up dial tone. I put the phone back to the receiver, almost sighing in relief. He is just as kind as Ami said. His voice was light and enticing. There was a nurturing nature to his voice like he could sense my stress.
However, my relief was short-lived as my office phone began to ring once again.
“Hello?”
“Ms. L/N.” This time it was from the security office, my eyes jumped to the screen with the video surveillance.
“Does Mr. Park have another appointment?” My eyes settled on the camera pointed towards the front door just as the guard spoke. Standing there were 3 figures. I could vaguely make out one man and two women. The man is clearly older, seeming old enough to be the younger woman’s father. Her long black hair was parted down the middle and tucked behind her ears. She wore a casual black dress and the older woman beside her stood in a red blouse and black dress pants.
“No, he doesn’t.” I finally answer, “I don’t know who these people are.” I answered, noticing the girl wiped the rain from her face. Oh right! It’s raining!
I’m finally taking in their wet appearance, her hair now starting to stick to her face. I frowned, worried that they would get sick. It doesn’t seem like they have coats with them. How did they get here? I didn’t see any car in the driveway.
“I will go check Ms. L/n. Please don’t worry about it.” The guard said before hanging up the phone. I put the phone down, nervously tapping my fingers on the wooden desk. I hope this doesn’t disturb Mr. Park’s dinner.
Or was he expecting guests for dinner? I’m usually gone by this time. The guard ends up calling Mr. Park, seeing as I soon see two figures walking into the lobby, one of them being very unfamiliar. The guard isn’t who has my attention. It’s the dark-haired man who was clearly slim fit. His hair was messy, and he ran his fingers through his hair as the guard explained the presence of the three guests. He wore a plain white Tee shirt and grey joggers.
He walked some gracefully, his head held high with his hands tucked into his pockets. That’s Mr. Park? He doesn’t look a day over 25! What could such a young man be doing with such a fortune? I couldn’t see his face clearly, just because of the angle of the camera, but he’s obviously handsome.
Strangely, the three guests made no move to ring the doorbell or knock. They only stood there patiently, speaking among themselves. I narrowed my eyes at the strange behavior
I leaned back in my seat, watching as Mr. Park opened the door. He didn’t look pleased to see the guest, but they were not strangers. Mr. Park lets them in, shutting the door behind them, and leaning on the door with his arms crossed. I was so tuned into the camera that I didn’t notice the security guard left.
“They are friends of his.’ The guard says as he waltzes into the office, “But he doesn’t seem happy to see them. I can’t be sure if it’s because they are interrupting his schedule or if he truly doesn’t like them.”
I can only nod, “I see.” I glance back at the screen, watching what seems to be a heated conversation.
Mr. Park kept his position on his back against the door, arms crossed and his attention on his feet. The other three people stood in front of him, all talking at the same time. Are these clients? Maybe family members?
They are weird ones, that’s for sure. All three stood there, completely soaked head to toe, not minding the condition that they were in. Mr. Park is yelling. I could faintly hear it, and he was leaning forward, making the other three move back in...fear?
I get up from my seat as the voices rise in volume. I walk out of my office and tread lightly towards the lobby area.
“Jimin please!” A voice shrill. It must be the older woman? The voice was unsteady and shook as if the person was crying.
“How long are you all going to do this?” Another voice hisses. I’m guessing it must be Mr. Park, who I’m guessing is Jimin?
“Jisoo is a lovely woman, she is so accomplished, so powerful. Everyone is expecting a proposal! If this delays anymore--”
“Uncle, who’s at fault? Who has been planting seeds into everyone’s ears? I never once showed interest in Jisoo but you let your imagination build a fairytale ending in your head! There won't be one!”
Ahh, so they are family? I can hear them, but I can’t see whatever is going on, but it is time for Mr. Park’s dinner. He can’t run late. I don’t want his mood to turn sour as he realizes he is running behind.
I stepped out from the hallway, my presence not being noticed until I spoke.
“Mr. Park, it is time for dinner,” I said after a short gap of silence fell between the four adults. I finally laid eyes on Mr. Park. I must say...what a beautiful man. His features were soft, but the hard look in his eyes and his clenched jaw were not hidden by the kind features. His lips were pretty pink and his eyes a fiery honey brown. Even from where I stood, by the hall doorway, they stood out.
The other three people were standing with their back to me, their postures stiff. They can’t be friends. Friendships shouldn’t feel so tense.
His eyes didn’t leave the face of the man I assumed was his father. It was the older woman who turned around to glance my way, a look that yelled “ugh the help!” in a snobby manner.
But she quickly double-takes, her eyes widened. I am stunned by her eyes, almost the same hypnotizing light brown as Mr. Park. The longer I stare back at her, the more I notice the resemblance. It’s hard to miss.
Is that Mr. Park’s mother?
The room stays silent, the man I’m assuming to be his uncle having a staring contest with the man of the house.
“Are you fucking serious?” The older woman says quietly. She sounds defeated, and almost like she was on the verge of tears, again. I-is she talking to me? At first, I thought that she’s annoyed by my boldness. I interrupted a serious family conversation to announce dinner? I must be out of my mind.
The younger woman turned to look at the older woman gripping her arm for balance. The young woman’s confusion was momentary as she followed the stunned woman’s gaze to my meek presence. The young lady narrowed her eyes, scoffing.
“Wow.” She sounded annoyed.
I looked over my shoulder, checking to see if there was something behind me. They couldn’t possibly be talking about me?
I clasp my hands in front of me, trying to keep my cool customer service smile. I don’t do well with stares.
“Jimin!” The older woman calls. I look towards the master of the house. He’s still glaring at his uncle. It’s almost like his eyes could physically burn a man down if he stared hard enough.
“Jimin for fuck sakes!” The woman wails.
“What is it?” He roars back, looking at the woman. The sudden voice of his voice causes me to jump and that movement catches his attention right away. His eyes bounced onto me, the angry gaze dropping to sadness? Confusion? The emotions flash over his face so quickly I can’t keep up.
I muster up a small smile, waiting for him to say something. There was something on the tip of his tongue.
“Mr. Park?” I call out as everyone stares at me in silence. The uncle was also gawking at me. Their eyes held recognition.
“Y/n?” Mr. Park calls out. It feels unsure, as though he was worried he was calling me the wrong name. Does he not know the name of his employees? I’ve been working here for over a month!
“Yes, Mr. Park?” I hope my exasperation was leaking into my voice, as I was trying to keep my cool. All these people are staring at me like I’ve got three heads.
“What are you…” The uncle trails off, eying me up and down, “How are you…” He trails off again, turning to face me completely.
My eyes move to every face, the questions in their eyes only are meeting with my equally confused face.
“I’m sorry but,” I pause, “have...have we met before?”

Never Really Was Enough, Pt. I
word count: 4.3k
summary: When Eva moves to Raleigh, it wasn't a happy occasion. She needed to get away from her family and moving across the country was the quickest way for her to accomplish that. As she finds her place in Raleigh, she finds a new family with people she never expected to (especially with a certain red-headed hockey player).
warnings: talk of past dealings with homophobia, off-screen character death

“How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become?”
The day Eva packs up and moves to Raleigh isn’t a happy one. Despite having the chance to start an amazing new job, and the chance to start over, she’s bitter about having to do it. The thought of having to make a new start without a support network is terrifying. But if it means that Eva can have a fresh new start, then so be it.
As Eva puts the last box into the U-Haul, she sighs. Moving across the country isn’t exactly how she had planned on getting away from her family, but she also didn’t think that she would be leaving so soon, either. It was a stroke of luck that she had been hired in North Carolina, and it was even better that she had found an apartment she could afford to live in.
Once she starts the long drive, there’s no heartfelt good-byes, and nobody to send her off. Eva has to remind herself that Lucas is long gone now and there’s nothing holding her back anymore. So, she begins what will likely turn into a week-long trip to Raleigh. It’s mostly a mindless drive, with only a few wrong turns. The days blur into each other, and she only stops for gas, food, and the chance to sleep.
By the time she pulls up to her new apartment complex, she feels exhausted and groans at the thought of having to unpack everything by herself. She drags herself to the front office to get checked in. It’s a smooth process, and once she gets the keys, Eva is hoping it doesn’t take all night to get everything moved up to her apartment.
“Hey, are you new here?” someone asks.
Eva turns and there’s a woman, about her age and blonde hair that glows in the sunlight walking over to the U-Haul.
“Yeah, just got in obviously,” Eva answers with a tired smile. “I’m Eva.”
“Samantha, but everyone calls me Sammy,” she introduces. “Are you here by yourself?”
“Yep, it’s just me,” Eva replies. “I couldn’t afford to hire any help, and my family couldn’t make it out, so it’s just me.”
“Ah, so you moved from far away?”
“Across the country,” Eva answers. “I came from Portland. The one in Oregon.”
“Damn, that’s a long-ass drive,” Sammy jokes. “But I think you’ll like it here. The neighbors are good, for the most part.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“I’m guessing this will take you a while, so I should be able to help you once I pick up my boyfriend from the auto shop.”
“Oh, you don’t have to help.”
Sammy snorts. “Please, you’re going to be here for ages. It’ll be no big deal at all. There aren’t a lot of people our age here, so it won’t be too much of a hassle to help out.”
“Well, if it’s not a big deal, then sure, I’d appreciate the help,” Eva replies with a soft smile. “I live in 417 if I’m not down by the truck.”
“See you then, Eva.”
Once Sammy leaves, Eva looks back to everything she has to unpack. She’s thankful that she doesn’t have a bed or couch to worry about, but Eva isn’t happy about having to sleep on the floor until the bed she ordered comes in. Without the help from her family, though, there was no way she was going to be able to get a bed or a couch into the moving vehicle.
Eva loses track of time, and by the time Sammy and her boyfriend, Patrick, come by to help, it’s late afternoon. They don’t talk much, but the silence is easy, which Eva is unfamiliar with. It’s been a long time since she felt comfortable not feeling like she had to fill the quietness. By the time dinner time rolls around, they finally have everything in Eva’s apartment.
“Are you going to want help unpacking things?” Sammy asks.
“Nah, this was already so much help. I probably would have spent the rest of the night bringing things up here,” Eva answers. “But thank you again, I really appreciate this.”
“We couldn’t not help someone moving in by themselves,” Patrick says. “It’s a big step, what you did. I don’t think I could ever move across the country by myself.”
Eva shrugs. “If you have to do it, then you manage.”
Both Sammy and Patrick don’t ask for more details, which Eva is grateful for. She’s not really sure if she feels comfortable talking about how she ended up here quite yet.
“So, are you really going to be fine sleeping on the floor?” Patrick asks, a little bit of worry in his voice. “I’m sure we could find something more comfortable for you.”
“Yeah, it’s only for a couple of nights until the delivery comes in,” Eva replies. “I just wasn’t sure when I would be getting here, so I guess I’ll just have to suffer for getting here early.”
Sammy snorts. “Alright, well, if you ever need company, we’re just one floor up. And you know what, give me your number so I can text you good places for takeout. I’m sure that you won’t want to be cooking for the next few days.”
“Oh, thank you, that would be nice,” Eva replies, who was planning on just living off of pizza for the next day or two. “I honestly don’t even know what there’s to do here since I just moved out here for work, so honestly, I’ll take any recommendations you have.”
Once Sammy and Patrick leave, Eva has a new contact in her phone and a list of places to check out around Raleigh. It’s a comfort knowing that she already has people willing to help her out here. She isn’t sure how well she’ll click with people at work and the thought of randomly introducing herself to her other neighbors isn’t an appealing idea.
The following week is a hectic one, with Eva trying to get her apartment to feel like a home and making sure that she’s ready to start work. She meets up with Sammy and Patrick again for dinner one night at their apartment to take a break from unpacking all of her boxes. It wasn’t until she moved that she realized how much stuff she accumulated.
“So, what do you two do for work?” Eva inquires.
“I work in the front office for the Canes,” Sammy answers. “And Patrick here is a kindergarten teacher, which is why you see glitter everywhere.”
“That was one time,” Patrick protests. “It’s not my fault it never disappears.”
Sammy snorts. “Yeah, it was a mistake he’s thankfully only made once.”
“Uh, not to sound dumb, but am I supposed to know who the Canes are?” Eva asks, a little nervous. “Are they like…a big company or something?”
“Oh, they’re the NHL team here,” Sammy replies. “I keep forgetting not everyone keeps up with hockey.”
“Well…I guess I’m going to have to start watching it if I’m going to be friends with the two of you,” Eva says. “I’ve only watched one game and that was because it was on at a sports bar my brother and I were at.”
“It’s really not that big of a deal,” Sammy says. “Hockey is fun, but it can be kind of messy sometimes. And I hardly understand it despite working there for a couple years now.”
Eva smiles softly. “Well, in that case, I feel a bit better about not knowing anything.”
“So, what brought you all the way across the country? I don’t think we ever asked,” Patrick inquires. “You don’t have to share if you don’t want to, though.”
“I found a good computer engineering job out this way for a small tech company. My other job just wasn’t cutting it,” Eva explains. “And it was time to get away from the family. Things were…not great, to put things lightly. Turns out they weren’t okay with me being bi.”
“We’re glad to have you here then,” Sammy says decisively. “Family can be shit sometimes, and I’m glad that you’ve been able to get away from them.”
Eva smiles sadly. “Thank you. I don’t think it’s really settled in yet, but I’m proud of myself.”
“You deserve to be proud,” Sammy says. “Now, let’s talk about happier things.”
The rest of the night passes easily and Eva can tell that she’s going to really like Sammy and Patrick. They’re good people and take her coming out with ease. She forgot that plenty of people don’t care about her sexuality, but with a minimal support system back home, it was easy to not remember that. By the time Eva leaves that night, her heart feels fuller and happier than it has in a long time.
When Eva gets back to her apartment, she sighs and makes a list of what needs to be accomplished tomorrow. There’s not much left to do, especially since the bed she ordered had come in a few days ago and she had found a decent couch off of craigslist. Her new job starts on the following Monday, which is only four days away now.
To distract herself, Eva decides to finish all the unpacking the following day, then goes shopping for things to decorate with. She sold most of those things before the cross-country drive, not wanting to hold onto any bad memories. Now she has the chance for a fresh start and it makes her feel light.
By the time Monday morning rolls around, she’s extremely nervous. Despite emails saying that people dress casually, Eva decides to go for a more business casual look, wanting to make a good first impression. She does her best to look like she didn’t stay up all night, then makes the drive out to the office.
“You must be Eva!” someone greets cheerily, once Eva walks in the front door.
“Uh, yes, that’s me,” Eva replies, taken aback by their cheery disposition.
“I’m James, and I’ll be helping you settle into the office,” James explains. “I know this is a lot to take in on a Monday, but today and tomorrow will mostly be orientation and HR stuff.”
“I can handle that,” Eva replies.
James proceeds to show Eva where her desk is and let’s her get settled. He gives her login information for her computer, and then lets her work on settling into her space, along with setting things up with HR. The morning passes quickly, then James is treating Eva to lunch, where they end up visiting a local diner.
“They’re open 24/7 and don’t mind if we stay for hours on end in the middle of the night when we’re trying to meet a project deadline,” James explains, when Eva seems a bit confused.
“Sounds like that’s a common experience,” she snorts.
“Don’t want to scare you off, but you wouldn’t be wrong,” James laughs. “How’s it been so far? I know it’s not that exciting, yet.”
Eva shrugs. “Could be worse. It seems like a good place and like there’s good people here. So, I think I can deal with a couple days of boring paperwork.”
“That’s the spirit!” James says happily. “And I promise that this is an amazing place to work. It’s not all that glamourous, especially since we aren’t a big company or anything, but the culture is what makes people stay.”
“Well, that’s good, glad I took a chance on coming out here then.”
The rest of lunch passes easily and Eva proceeds to spend the rest of the day filling out paperwork. Despite the easiness of the day, she feels exhausted by the time she gets back to her apartment. She reheats leftovers, then goes to pass out on her mildly uncomfortable bed.
The summer passes by quicker than Eva can even process. There’s so much to take in and she doesn’t have time to hurt about her family not asking about how she’s doing. It’s mid-August when she’s hanging out with Sammy, while Patrick preps for school to start up again.
“So, how would you feel coming to a company party with me?” Sammy asks, out of the blue. “It’s in a couple of weeks and I want you to come with me. It’d be fun.”
“Shouldn’t you be going with Patrick?” Eva retorts. “The two of you are dating.”
“Yeah, but I always bring him. Besides, I think you would have fun and would get along with everyone,” Sammy explains. “And honestly, Patrick is a bit all over the place this time of year, so I don’t think he’s too keen on going anyways.”
“What’s the vibe like? Is it a stuffy company party where everyone secretly gets drunk to get through the night or one where people actually like each other?”
“People actually enjoy each other there. And it’ll be a barbecue at one of the player’s houses, so it’s a totally chill thing.”
“Oh, well, it’ll be good to meet your coworkers then. I can finally put some names to faces, but I can’t guarantee that I’ll remember anything.”
“Alright, I’ll make sure that you’re on the guest list. Some of the players will be there with their partners, so you’ll have the chance to meet them if you want to.”
“I honestly could not tell you who’s who still, so I probably won’t even know that I met any of them.”
Sammy laughs. “That’ll provide some good chirping material for them.”
“Glad I could be of service,” Eva jokes.
“You’ll fit right in; I promise.”
~ ~ ~
Finally, the day of the barbecue rolls around. It’s still sticky hot, so Eva keeps her outfit simple with a tank top and a pair of shorts. Sammy insisted that the dress code was casual and there’s no need to dress nice. The whole thing is just a chance for everyone to mingle and meet the new people joining the Canes.
Despite still not really knowing any of the players, Sammy tells Eva about a new player that’s coming to the barbecue today. She seems excited to meet whoever the guy is, so Eva tries to remember his name, but forgets it the closer they get to the house where the get-together is being hosted.
Sammy has to park a little bit away, so when the two of them walk up to the house, Eva lets out a small gasp. The house is huge and the backyard looks gigantic. She supposes it has to be, to host an office party. However, it’s still a reminder how lucrative being an athlete and sports management can be.
“It’s fucking ridiculous, isn’t it?” Sammy snorts. “Not that I’m complaining, since it always means good food and alcohol, but still. I’m still honestly not completely used to it and I’ve been coming to these things ever since I started working here.”
“This is…a lot,” Eva comments. “But I’m excited to look around.”
Once they get into the house, Sammy drags Eva out to the backyard and introduces her to a bunch of people. Eva immediately forgets all of their names, but just smiles and nods along. After a little bit however, she decides to split off from the group to go get some food. She lets Sammy know and walks off to the other side of the yard. Once she gets her food, someone walks up to her and introduces himself.
“I don’t think we’ve met yet,” he says. “I’m Dougie.”
“Oh, it’s good to meet you, I’m Eva,” she replies. “I don’t actually work here, I’m with Sammy. I guess that makes you coworkers, right?”
“Um, I think? Technically?” he replies, unsure.
“Do you work in management then? Didn’t take you for the type, but I guess I shouldn’t judge.”
“Um, I mean-” Dougie starts to say.
“Dougie, get over here, we need to show you something!” someone else shouts.
He looks apologetically over at Eva before heading over to the group. Eva obviously wants to know what he was going to say, but shrugs it off and walks over to Sammy. She’s still animatedly talking to the same people as before, but smiles over at Eva when she joins the group again. After a few minutes, they head off to grab food as well.
“So, meet anyone exciting yet?” Sammy asks. “There’s a few players and they’ll introduce themselves to anyone new.”
“I might have met your boss? Or management?” Eva answers, still unsure of what Dougie’s role is.
“Oh, isn’t she amazing?” Sam gushes.
“She? Well, I guess I shouldn’t have assumed her gender,” Eva replies, immediately feeling bad.
Sammy looks confused. “Um…I don’t think we’re talking about the same person. My boss is over there.”
She points to a petite woman, with ebony skin. So, definitely not Dougie then.
“Well…that is definitely not who I met,” Eva whispers. “His name was Dougie.”
“You met Dougie? That’s the new player I was talking about!” Sammy exclaims. “We literally talked about this before we got here.”
“I was nervous! I don’t remember things when I get nervous.”
“Did you say anything embarrassing to him?”
“I mean, I basically told him that he didn’t seem like the management type? Because he said he was only technically a coworker of yours.”
Sammy snorts. “Oh my god, I can’t believe you told him that to his face.”
“How was I supposed to know?” Eva exclaims. “And I wasn’t wrong, was I? He isn’t the management type.”
“God, I can’t wait to tell everyone about this,” Sammy says, laughing.
“I’m making such a bad first impression,” Eva groans.
“No, I promise this will only make everyone love you more.”
“Whatever you say,” Eva replies skeptically.
Fortunately, the day passes in a much less embarrassing fashion for Eva. She manages to avoid Dougie the rest of the time she’s there, not wanting to address how badly she made a fool of herself. Normally, Eva likes to think she’s more put together than this, but something about it just makes her feel awkward.
“So, what did you think?” Sammy asks as they head out.
“It was fun,” Eva answers. “Still can’t believe I made a fool of myself in front of Dougie, though.”
“Honestly, I don’t think it’s really going to be that big of a deal. I don’t think he’s the type of player to get mad about someone not recognizing him.”
“Oh, well, that’s good at least,” Eva jokes. “But then again, I doubt I’ll be seeing him again, so I guess I shouldn’t be too worried.”
“Bold of you to assume I’m not dragging you to another event soon.”
“Seriously? Why would you take me to another one of these?”
Sammy shrugs. “Patrick has never been too much of a fan of going and I don’t like going by myself. So, I’ll keep taking you until you get sick of it.”
Eva snorts. “Well, at least you’re being honest. It was fun today besides me being an actual idiot, so I guess I can tag along again. When’s the next thing?”
“We usually have something else when the preseason ends, so probably the end of September at some point. It’s much more relaxed since the players are usually off the walls with the energy to finally start the season again.”
“I won’t ever turn down the chance for decent free food, so count me in.”
“What do you need free food for? You earn just as much as Patrick and I combined in one year.”
“You’re not wrong, but it’s also a hold over from the college days. Some things just don’t change.”
Sammy just rolls her eyes in response. Once they get back to the apartment complex, Sammy drags Eva up to her apartment to tell Patrick about meeting Dougie. Eva is blushing out of pure embarrassment the whole time. She has a feeling that she’s not going to ever live it down, but she guesses there’s worse things to be teased about.
“For someone who’s so smart, I can’t believe you did that,” Patrick says, laughing.
“Oh my god, it’s not my fault half of these guys look exactly the same!” Eva exclaims. “And it’s not like it’s my job to know which one is which.”
“Well, you’re going to have to learn if you’re coming with me to more company events,” Sammy points out.
“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Eva groans. “I take back my standing offer of going with you, you don’t deserve it anymore.”
“Sure, whatever you say,” Sammy says. “Besides, what happened to wanting free food?”
“No longer worth it,” Eva replies.
Patrick and Sammy laugh in reply. Eva just rolls her eyes.
“As much fun as I had today, I should probably head out. We have a huge project coming up at work and I know I’m going to be pulling more all-nighters than I want to admit,” Eva says.
“Alright, try to get some rest at least,” Patrick says.
“I’ll do my best,” Eva replies, as she heads out of the apartment.
The weeks pass by in a blur, especially since Eva gets swept up in project deadlines. Before she knows it, it’s the end of September and Sammy is dragging her to the season kickoff party. This time, it’s at a different players house, but the place is still as extravagant as the last one. Eva also had made sure to try and memorize a couple of players’ names and faces.
“Hey, it’s…Eva, right?” Dougie says, coming up to her and Sammy.
“Oh yes, that’s right,” Eva replies awkwardly. “And Dougie? Who doesn’t happen to work in management, but is instead a player?”
He snorts. “Yeah, that would be me. The guys still haven’t let me live that one down.”
“Glad I could provide some quality material,” Eva jokes.
“Don’t worry, I’ve made sure that she’s gotten some shit for it as well,” Sammy interjects. “Wanted to make sure the chirping was solid on both sides of it.”
Dougie laughs, and Eva feels herself warming a little at the sound. It’s a good laugh, and she feels a bit odd at admitting the fact. She shoves any thoughts of associating Dougie with being good or cute, not wanting to even go down that road.
“It seems like you’re settling in well,” Sammy says. “Is Raleigh everything you ever dreamed?”
“Ah yes, definitely living out all of my dreams here,” Dougie jokes, good-naturedly. “I do enjoy it here, though. I feel like it’ll be good.”
“Then it seems you and Eva are in the same boat,” Sammy replies. “She’s fairly new in town as well.”
“Oh? What brings you out here?” Dougie inquires.
“If y’all are going to bond over being the newbies, I’m going to go and get some food,” Sammy says, heading off.
Once she’s gone, Eva answers, “I moved out here for work, actually. Moved from Portland, Oregon, so it’s definitely a lot to get used to.”
“You really moved across the country for work?” Dougie says, a bit surprised.
“Yeah, I just…needed a scenery change and Raleigh was the first place that offered a decent job in a place I wasn’t completely opposed to moving to,” Eva explains. “I mean, it wasn’t hard to find computer engineering jobs, so I guess I was able to be a bit picky.”
“Computer engineering? I didn’t take you for the type,” Dougie teases.
“Oh my god, you’re not going to live me that down, are you?”
“The opportunity presented itself, and I didn’t want to pass it up. But seriously, that’s cool, even if I don’t understand what that even means.”
“It’s not much, we just help develop computer hardware and software. Most of the training is in electrical engineering anyways, so it’s not hard to adapt skills across the board.”
Dougie snorts. “It’s not much, she says. That’s still pretty impressive, Eva.”
“Well, thanks, I guess.”
“But I still can’t imagine why you chose Raleigh of all places. Why not New York or Seattle, or whatever? I feel like those places are more known for their tech industries.”
“Seattle was a little close to home for me, and I was also just tired of living in a big city, so moving to an even bigger city was out of the question.”
“That’s understandable, I guess.”
“So, I know you’re a new player here because Sammy mentioned it. But did you sign here or…I honestly have no idea how this works.”
“Nah, I was traded from Calgary.”
“…Is that in Canada?”
“Yeah, that’s in Canada,” Dougie replies, laughing.
“You’re going to chirp me about that too, aren’t you?” Eva groans.
“It’s only fair.”
“Did I miss Eva doing something dumb?” Sammy asks, coming back with a plate of food for herself and Eva.
“Yes, she didn’t know where Calgary is,” Dougie answers.
“Well, I can’t blame her for not knowing. It’s really not that remarkable,” Sammy retorts.
Dougie laughs again, and Eva feels herself blushing a little. He seems like a good person and definitely isn’t hard to look at. She tries to push those thoughts out of her head, knowing that if she manages to develop a crush on him, that it’ll go nowhere. The chances of anything happening between the two of them is slim at best.
“I’ll let the two of you continue enjoying the party, I’m going to go see how everyone else is doing,” Dougie says. “Hopefully I’ll see you later?”
“Oh, you definitely will,” Sammy says, rather ominously.
Dougie smiles, then heads off to where the food is located. Sammy immediately turns to Eva and raises an eyebrow.
“What?” Eva asks. “Do I have something on my face?”
“No, it just seems like the two of you were getting along pretty well.”
“I was just being polite,” Eva says indignantly.
“Uh huh, I’m sure that’s what was going on.”
“Oh my god, you’re the worst.”
“Look, if the two of you become friends, or maybe you know…exclusive, I’m taking all the credit.”
“Nothing is going to happen because we’ll only see each other at these events if I decide to keep coming.”
“Not if I have anything to do with it,” Sammy says, smiling brightly.
“I don’t like where this is going.”
“You’ll be thanking me later, Eva, I promise.”

Hi, I was wondering if you had any tips for organization? Im going into my sophomore year of college & while I did pretty well my first year, I was constantly stressed out & unorganized. Im a commuter so I try not to carry anything I don't need. I also never use planners, I've tried everything from a cheap notebook to write todo lists in to expensive organized planners. I really enjoy having everything on the calendar in my phone which is synced with my laptop but I feel like I need more
What I’d suggest for you is taking time over the summer to try out a few different organization systems and figure out which one works best for you. A lot of people like planners, and I always suggest them to make life more organized. You said you’ve tried them before and they didn’t work out, but that could have been because you weren’t used to using one or didn’t like it and I’m not sure which. So if it was just because you weren’t used to using one, I really suggest giving that another shot. I’d say start with a cheaper, simple, non-designer one so that if you decide you actually don’t like it, you won’t have wasted a lot of money. Target has a lot of simple but pretty ones for less than $10.
If you do this and decide you like it, you can then upgrade to a more in-depth planner. Some popular ones among the studyblr community are Kate Spade, Kikki.K, The Simplified Planner, Lilly Pulitzer, Ban.do, and the Erin Condren Life Planner. These range from about $25-$70 depending on which sizes, covers, versions (daily, weekly, monthly), and add-ons you get and usually run a year or a year and a half. I wouldn’t recommend committing to any of these unless you know you’ll stick to using it.
You could also try a bullet journal, which you could make into a much more personalized planner tailored for your needs and preferences. The upside to these is that they have everything you want, nothing more, nothing less. The downside, though, is that you have to buy a pre-made custom one or do all of the layouts yourself, which can be very, very time consuming.
Another option is one that you seem to be using already, which is a synced calendar between your devices. However, you say you feel that this isn’t enough. I’m assuming this is because the calendar alone wasn’t enough to keep you on top of things.
So you could try a combination of the two with a planner and a calendar, which is something I’ve seen a lot of people do. The calendar can tell you when things are coming up, such as due dates, meetings, etc., and the planner can be used for actually detailing what you need to do each day.
If you prefer to be paper-free and do your planning digitally, @emmastudies has a lot of digital planner options in her Etsy shop (check her Tumblr page for a 10% discount if you decide to buy from her). Alternatively, you can do something that I typically do for finals week and make an Excel sheet.
They look like this and the general idea is that each column represents one day and all of the items below are a list of things I want/need to accomplish that day, color-coded by course. I like this system because I can easily break large tasks like writing a midterm paper up into smaller chunks of work over a few days. It also helps me to visualize how long certain things will take me and to move things around if need be. For example, if I had to work an 8 hour shift on Sunday, I’d adjust my tasks to make sure I wouldn’t be up doing homework all night after work. This system can work easily in tandem with a calendar and would help you keep all of your planning digital and accessible on all your devices. You could also use Google Sheets if you prefer it to Excel.
If you have an iPhone, you could also put your assignments into the Reminders app or another similar one to make sure that you don’t forget any assignments or studying you need to take care of. I like Reminders because it’s already on the phone and you can make as many lists as you like, which I tend to use for daily to-do lists. And of course, I’m sure there’s something similar if you have an Android.
It also may not be your organization system causing problems so much as your planning process. Make sure that as soon as you get the syllabus for each class at the start of the semester, you look it over and jot down big dates like tests, presentations, and paper due dates, and make note of any changes to these over time.
On the note of being a commuter, you’re right that you shouldn’t carry any more than you need to in your bag each day, but you may still be packing more than is actually necessary. For example, I usually advise commuters against lugging their books around unless they plan to use them on campus that day, either in class, or for homework/studying they plan to do on campus. Even then, if your school offers commuter storage cubbies or lockers, I’d recommend taking advantage of them to spare your shoulders the pain of hauling them around all day.
Depending on how you take notes, you may only really need your computer/tablet. However, if you take handwritten lecture notes, obviously you’ll need to pack your notebooks for the day.
At the end of each day, I know it sounds like a hassle, but taking everything out of your bag and re-packing it with just what you’ll need for the next day can save you a lot of heavy baggage and it can help you feel organized when searching for things in your bag.
It seems like your stress comes from the disorganization problems you were having, and staying organized and on top of things should definitely bring that stress down. But of course, college in general is always stressful, even for the most organized students. To keep this to a minimum, I recommend activities like yoga, coloring, or 20-minute meditation sessions before bed. Essential oils, candles, incense, and room sprays can also help make a calming mood in your environment. If you’re a coffee-lover, it may also do you well to try to make an occasional tea substitute instead. It’ll still give you a caffeine fix, but tends to not give such a caffeine high, which can prevent excess stress and sugar crashes.
I hope this helps and you succeed in your goal of being more organized for the coming year!

Rebirth
/The trees were like fallen soldiers. The skeletal remains of the proud, the powerful, so old they seemed nearly invincible before the battlefield of winter had taken them to their deaths.
The trees were my constant and only companions in the world of solitude I’d recently self-imposed. One caught my attention in particular. It was standing strong but naked without its spring leaves and armored in withered bark. Rather than collapsed like its timbered comrades, it had taken a final bow, coming to rest in that very image, somehow managing to succumb to the elements with a tragic grace, bent but not broken. God damn it was like staring in a mirror. It was quite something what nature could reflect for a person. Seclusion helped to carve out the details of the surroundings in greater relief than any place busy with distractions. This was the driving force behind my decision to seek it.
Life had found me at a crossroad, one of many predecessors. Some intersections in life were there to teach you how wrong you could be about a person, good and bad. Others were like a little red string, tied around a finger reminding you that despite the twenty-four seven date with oneself, you still had shit to learn.
Anyone who’d ambled through this forest never would have questioned the integrity of the trees nor their staying power but here they were, chopped back down to size by forces they couldn’t combat. It was among these once living giants my truth was blatantly clear.
I’d long thought I’d settled into a way of life I found satisfaction in. Demons, though, have a way of resurfacing where you can’t quite kiss them goodbye. Mine lingered, like an itch you couldn’t scratch. To cope with this internal prey, somewhere along the line I’d unintentionally stopped taking in the details, allowing the edges of my reality to blur. My metaphoric knife needed a sharpening and the evergreens of the Pacific Northwest, were my stone.
I’d fed egregiously before I’d come into the forest, draining human after human before embarking on my walkabout. It wasn’t blood I was after, but energy. I took varying degrees of youth, rage, angst, will power, a dash of confidence, a side of spring in my step, stripping my victims of what had been driving them, leaving them minus the things I had absorbed. Aside from strapping myself with the extra fortitude, the feedings allowed the fringe benefit of quality time with Mr. Vitamin D himself, hello sunshine. Too long between feedings and I’d have to hit the vein directly, but I preferred not to get energetically emaciated. The atrophy of one’s brain was not at all pleasant, trust.
I was not unused to being on my own; I had been a solo rider for the better part of eighty-five years. My parents had been unfailing companions until their immortality had been robbed in an act of homicide, one that had gone an unsolved. I was only just fifteen. Revisiting that set of memories was well north of unpleasant. Like an old Polaroid, the color had faded but the image would not be erased. Their bodies had been smoldering in their own hearth, their heads on either side of the mantle. My screams had caused a ringing in my own ears. My pursuit for their assassins would not find an end, not without avenging the only family that had ever been mine. Even with my determination, it was unlikely I’d ever find their killers, especially after I’d let my concentration dull. I knew their assailants could only be vampire. And… That. Was. It.
My focus had been sacrificed for far too long in favor of pleasure, indulgence in travel and music and arts and literature and food and sex. I freelanced as a private investigator, solving cold cases. In the rage of my grief I had found myself an opportunistic sleuth, hence the Jaxon PI gig. Helping others find the closure I couldn’t worked as well as bandages do, covering up the wound, not allowing it to become infected, but not actually doing much for the healing. I had relied on those bandages, lying to myself that I was moving on.
I never had.
The unresolved had the power to surface like bile in the stomach after a bad meal. One day I woke up, eyes wide open to the realization that all my movement actually had left me standing still. I was no closer to the truth than I had been the day I’d let it all fall to my subconscious and also no less alone. I hit another crossroad, this one telling me to go back three spaces and find that closure I’d lied to myself about possessing. Facing all that, to put it bluntly, sucked, but what else could be expected with reopening wounds. It also left me with a bitter aftertaste for allowing the trail to grow not just cold, but downright polar.
This restart would be out of the fray and modern day distractions. The world was too far gone into virtual reality and it took a shit ton of efforting to concentrate on the real deal. John Muir knew what he was doing, that man was a sage.
I walked right into those trees, minus a map and purposely lost the trail. As my resistance to the sun’s companionship started to diminish just three days into my walkabout, I’d found myself in that field full of fallen troops. Fixated on their various states and arrangements, I moved from tree to tree, taking time with each one, letting imagination tell me their fictional stories and how they had met their end. It was in a particularly dense section a flash of light had caught my eye. Hidden among the overgrowth was an abandoned cabin. Boarded up and barely discernible, clearly the forest had been working on reclaiming it. Damn, nature was fucking fantastic. Gut instinct hit with a force that nearly knocked me silly. I hadn’t known I’d been looking for it, but somehow the place had found me. Completely out of the fray and off the grid, it called out to me, “Welcome home, Jaxon.”
I set to work without delay, clearing the brush to see what I had to work with. Whoever had left the place clearly had no intentions of returning. It was a shell, for certain, but the foundation was solid and it even had a working well, not to mention solar panels. Five out of the six were busted and needed replacing; I’d have to get them on the first trip back to the city.
The inside of the three bedroom was caked with about ten years worth of dust and an entire universe of cobwebs. It was sparsely equipped with a few necessities but not a lick of furniture. Someone had lived here at some point and they’d had to have hauled shit away which meant I could come back with what I needed to make this homestead all my own.
With a reluctance and an inner voice crying out it was “too soon” I made a trip back to plugged in, concrete reality a few days later. I had a mental list of what was needed, and the walk out provided me enough time to navigate how in the hell I was going to return with construction supplies because I was damn sure Home Depot wasn’t delivering. The strength of twenty men on my side, the clever trick would be accessing the trail without notice considering a new mattress would be part of the loot. Cloak of night it would be.
I’d liked to have said I only picked up the necessities, but it would be a whopping lie, considering I’d grabbed my record player and about five hundred out of ten thousand of my vinyl sweethearts, some books and a decent amount of food. No television or computer though, I was going unplugged. I fed again, this time tapping the human’s vein, not because I’d gone too long, but because it would allow me the luxury of working under the sun. Blood gave me a day pass the canopy of trees could not. I’d have a good two weeks, give or take a few days.
It took about twice as long as the trip into town to get back with what equated to enough shit to fill a truck bed, but it was worth the hassle not to have to make two. I was itching to be away from the confines of modernity; somehow I had become trapped by a world that was wide open.
First order of business was setting in the solar panels so I could run more than just the fridge. My laughs echoed in the trees at the awareness the very beast that could kill me was going to provide me electricity. Sunshine, so fickle.
It had been a long ass time since I had worked with my hands and I was savoring every busted knuckle and blood sacrifice my project claimed. I was digging the outdoor shower, which needed a few alterations to accommodate those times I had to stay out of the sun.
After the outside was addressed in the span of a week, I worked on making the inside a lot more livable, first up was building a bed frame for the monster mattress that I’d hauled for miles off trail, still wrapped in its plastic.
The interior I banged out in a day and it was then and only then I allowed myself to celebrate with a scalding shower, half a bottle of good vodka to my head and some vinyl spinning under the needle with the windows wide open to all that piney, fresh air.
I had nowhere to be, no one to answer to. Lost to the world, I only hoped I would find myself./

COST
How Much Do Property Cleanouts Cost?
Property Cleanouts Service near Wichita KS: Cleaning out an estate can take a lot of time, patience, and money. There are many decisions that need to be made in order to effectively and efficiently clean out an estate. Here are some ways to help you determine how much an estate cleanout may cost.
After the benefactors and heirs have been determined and an executor of the estate has been named, it is important to identify the assets of the estate. Inventories of the estate may be required and are certainly helpful. The estate assets should be clearly marked and assigned a destination (mail to a family member, take to attorney's office, hold for benefactor pickup, sell for the estate, etc.). The destination of the asset may change as the estate gets closer to closing, but properly marking them is important for identification. Depending upon the size of the estate, this can be the most expensive phase of the cleanout, but generally makes the estate the most money. Costs for identifying, inventorying, and dispensing assets will vary greatly. Many asset identification and relocation costs will range from $2000-$5000.
Property Cleanouts Service near Wichita KS: Another cost of cleaning out an estate is locating and sorting important paperwork. Deeds, wills, titles, insurance policies, etc. should be saved and given to the executor of the estate. Other paperwork, such as electric bills, mortgage, water bills, medical bills, and other bills with account numbers and/or social security numbers should be discussed with the executor. Many times, this paperwork should be properly disposed of. Shredding is an inexpensive option for safely disposing of small or large amounts of paper files. Additionally, most shredding companies can safely dispose of computers and computer hard drives. Shredding companies generally charge by the pound, and some companies have minimum charges. Many estate shredding charges range from $50-$200.
Some items have minimum value, or may cost more to sell or dispose of than they are worth. Donating items is a great way to save money on cleanout costs. Many donation companies can send out a box truck to pick up items from a home to sell at their retail location. However, many companies schedule pickups at least a week in advance and have policies about what they can and cannot pick up. Most companies will allow you to take items to their retail locations if pickup services are not available. Most donation companies do not charge for picking up donations, so using this service can save you time and money.
Property Cleanouts Service near Wichita KS: Disposing of trash and debris can be overwhelming, especially when there is a lot. Estimating the amount of trash and debris at the beginning of estate cleanout takes a lot of skill and experience. Renting a roll-off container can be helpful, but each county regulates the type of material that can go into the container. There can be steep fines for placing items into a container that are not permitted by the container company or landfill. Roll-off container rental rates vary greatly, but many 30 yard containers range from $400 - $600 each and many charge daily rental rates and additional rates per ton of material removed. Taking items to a local dump can save a lot of money, as many dumps are free to residents of the county, but can take an extremely long time. Taking items directly to a landfill may take more time, but may require much fewer trips.

Please contact your property manager at any time to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have regarding preparation of your property.
About Cleaning?
Your property needs to be cleaned thoroughly and all personal possessions and any miscellaneous items (including garbage, construction debris, new air filters, light bulbs, etc.). The incoming tenants will be paying a security deposit, which they will expect returned if they leave your property in the same condition in which you left it.
About Painting
Many clients ask us if they need to paint their home prior to rental. You do not need to paint simply because you are renting your home, but we do advise our clients to paint rooms that have dirty, stained, or marked walls. Neutral colors work best.
How does Wichita Household Services procure tenants for your property? What is the typical time frame?
Once there is a property management agreement in place, we immediately list the property for rent within our own office and on the North Texas Area Multiple Listing Service and Realtor.com. We then place our sign and lockbox on the property. We also like to put an ad in rentals.com as well as rentalhomesplus.com to gain maximum exposure for your property. Realtors throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area will then have the ability to show the property.
Can I specify that I do not want any pets or smokers in my house?
You certainly may prohibit tenants from bringing pets into your home, or from smoking in your home. Please do note that by banning pets and smokers you are reducing the potential pool of renters.
We have found that our clients have significant difficulty in finding tenants when prohibiting pets, but we do advise that you require a pet deposit anywhere from $250-500 depending on the size and breed of the pet. Typically 50% of the pet deposit is non-refundable. Another option is to only allow pets under 25-30 lbs.
Please know, if you feel strongly about not having pets, Wichita Household Services will respect your instructions and will not lease your property to pet owners.
What happens if the tenant damages the property?
Wichita Household Services will try hard to find tenants with good credit and references because they rarely cause significant damage to rental properties. In some cases, it can happen where the tenant will cause damages to your property. We use a screening company to perform credit, criminal background, employment, eviction, and landlord checks.
Wichita Household Services collects a security deposit from each tenant prior to their occupying the property. In the event that a tenant damages your property, the deposit is typically sufficient to cover any minor repairs required.
If a tenant leaves the property owing more than the security deposit covers, Wichita Household Services will turn over their account to a collection agency and file a suit in small claims court.

BEST BUG DEFLECTOR INSTALLATION SERVICE IN AUSTIN TX AUSTIN BUG DEFLECTOR INSTALLATION
Bug Deflectors Installation
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Austin TX :Bug deflectors create a streamlined jet of air that diverts bugs away from your vehicle, preventing a gooey, caked-on mess and the resulting paint damage. Available in several different varieties, bug deflectors can sport a lower, compact design for a more subtle appearance, as well as a higher-rising version for extra defense. Bug shields from Mobile Auto Truck Repair Austin are built from impact-resistant acrylic that never rusts, corrodes or oxidizes. The sturdy design can even deflect a moderate amount of flying rocks and road debris, so you can enjoy enhanced protection for your vehicle.
Installing Your Bug Deflector
● Always start any exterior upgrade by washing your vehicle. For this installation, pay extra attention to the area along the front of the hood, where the bug shield will be installed. If you don’t have time to wash your entire vehicle, at the very least, make sure that this area is clean and dry. Make sure to dry the area thoroughly, as the bug shield won’t stick to a wet surface. ● Set out all the mounting hardware and measure the width of the bug deflector to determine where to install the mounting hardware. Doing this in advance ensures that your bug shield is centered on your vehicle’s hood. ● Attach the mounting hardware as shown in your kit’s instructions. Clamp down the support brackets onto your vehicle’s hood. ● Mount the bug shield to the support brackets by either screwing it into place or using the clips and push-rivets, depending on the method specific to your particular kit. Note: Most quality aftermarket bug deflectors come complete with mounting hardware and step-by-step instructions. The assembly tips listed above are intended for general installation purposes.
Invest in the Perfect Bug Deflector
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Austin TX:Bug deflectors and similar products like car window deflectors and sunroof deflectors are a breeze to install. Plus, they enable you to leave your windows open a crack without having to worry about rain, dust or bugs flying in. Aftermarket bug deflector kits feature a seamless fit and often mount without any drilling required. They’re also designed for your specific make and model to ensure hassle-free set-up and quality appearance.
Prevent bugs from splattering against your exterior by shopping Mobile Auto Truck Repair Austin’s top-of-the-line selection of bug deflectors. We feature accessories from some of the industry’s top manufacturers including the EGR bug deflector, Lund deflectors and Mobile Auto Truck Repair Austin visors for trucks so you can rest assured that you’re receiving a high-quality product that’s designed to last for the long haul. We also carry accessories for some of the top vehicle applications, like the Civic-specific bug shield and Honda Accord vent visor, so you’re sure to find the perfect deflector for your specific make and model. Plus, you score extra savings with each purchase from Mobile Auto Truck Repair Austin, thanks to our 1-Year, Lower Price Guarantee and Free Shipping.
A bug deflector cuts down the amount of bugs that hit your vehicle as you drive. It does this by creating a slight slipstream that bugs get caught up in and carried over your vehicle. They can reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning your hood and windshield, and they also look stylish.
When you buy a bug deflector, you should look for: ● Durability – A deflector made of aerospace-grade acrylic are best. They are scratch-resistant and virtually indestructible. ● Warranty – A good bug deflector comes with a lifetime warranty. ● A sleek, low-profile design – This will reduce drag and keep your fuel efficiency up in the long run. ● No-drill fasteners – Bug deflectors that use existing holes in the hood or a high-strength adhesive tape are much easier to install. ● Custom fit – A bug deflector that is designed for your specific vehicle will look and work much better than a universal one.
The Lowdown On Bug Deflectors For Auto Detailing
Drivers all know the feeling. They’ve just been to the carwash and are driving along in their clean vehicle when, suddenly, a large bug splatters all over the windshield. Detailers know that bugs are actually quite harmful to auto paint, so removing them promptly is a must and keeping them at bay is even better. A great invention that can help with the latter is the bug deflector. To find out more about this nifty technology and also about why staving off bug damage is important, keep reading.
Keeping Bugs at Bay Is Important Because They Can Damage Auto Paint
Pros who work in auto detailing know that splattered bugs do much more than just make a car look crummy. They can actually cause some serious damage to automotive paint, especially if left on a car for too long. This is because their remains quickly turn acidic and this eats away at the top layer of a car’s paint.
Vehicle owners may not always be able to promptly remove bug remains after every drive, so preventing an amassment of splattered bugs in the first place can be quite helpful. This is where bug deflectors can come in handy.
Bug Deflectors Redirect Insects and Other Small Debris Up and Over Cars
Bug deflectors are accessories that car owners can install on their hoods to reduce the amount of insects and small debris that may fly into and around windshields. They do this by redirecting the airflow that occurs naturally across a car’s hood. Whereas usually this airstream goes straight into the windshield and surrounding areas, bug deflectors angle it upwards. This lets the current of air pass over the top of a car. Any bugs and small debris caught in this airstream are therefore more likely to end up harmlessly flying past the car instead of hitting it.
Custom Designs Matter When It Comes to Bug Deflector Technology
Though bug deflector technology sounds amazing, it’s important to remember that not all bug deflectors are made equal and that bug deflectors are not a one-size-fits-all matter. This is because each car has its own unique aerodynamics depending on its make and model. As such, the way air flows over each car’s hood will be different, and a bug deflector that may work well for one car may not work well for another. The most effective bug deflectors are therefore those that have been custom designed for the particular brand and model of the car in question. This means that drivers can trust deflectors that have been modeled using computational fluid dynamics software using data relevant to their car. If a particular deflector has also been wind tunnel tested, this will provide an additional guarantee of its effectiveness.
Auto Detailing Is Required to Remove Bugs That Make It Past a Deflector
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Austin TX:As wonderful as bug deflectors are, they may not necessarily provide 100 percent protection, especially when driving at slower speeds where the diverted airstream is not always strong enough to pull away oncoming six-legged traffic. A few casualties are therefore usually inevitable. Individuals who work in professional automotive detailing know that any bug splatter that does occur should be removed as promptly as possible, and not by vigorous scrubbing. Instead, a safe cleaning liquid such as a solvent, dedicated bug remover, pre-wax cleaner, or spot treatment formula should be used to loosen any insect remains before wiping the car clean with a microfiber towel.
TIPS Bug Deflector Installation Service near Austin TX: ● Always start any exterior upgrade by washing your vehicle.
COST
How much does bug Deflector Installation cost? Bug Deflector Installation Service near Austin TX: Bug Deflector Installation cost at least $33 but can cost up to $130 depending on the brand, installation process, and design. Choosing the best option will not only enhance your car’s appearance but will also ensure the effectiveness of the component as stated above. The endless list of auto accessories can be confusing. Hood deflectors, bug deflectors, bug shields, hood skins and stone deflectors are all basically the same thing. Deflectors are made for cars, trucks and SUVs, with sales for trucks far outstripping all the others. They generally cost $40 to $100 and are relatively easy to install.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does a stone and bug deflector work?
Stone and bug deflectors work by altering the actual aerodynamics of your vehicle. The strip of acrylic that attaches to the front of your vehicle creates an upstream of air in front of your vehicle as you drive. This upstream sweeps bugs, small rocks, and other debris up and over your vehicle.
Do bug deflectors actually work?
The answer to the question posed in the first sentence, is a resounding yes! Stone and bug deflectors work by altering the actual aerodynamics of your vehicle. ... While the deflector won't be able to turn everything away from your hood and windshield, it will make sure that most debris won't even touch your vehicle.
Do Bug Deflectors Affect Gas Mileage?
There is a lot written on the internet about how bug deflectors affect gas mileage. Very little of it contains any facts. A study by the National Research Council in Canada pegged the reduction in mileage at approximately 1.5%. Note: this was using a low profile deflector on a commercial truck. Edmunds also states that there is a negative effect but doesn’t quantify the amount.
Our view is as follows. ● There is a negative impact ● The impact is very small, especially for low profile deflectors ● Other driver considerations, like windshield and paint protection, are more important considerations.
Is a Hood Deflector Worth It?
The answer to these questions is always, it depends. Hood deflectors are likely to be good purchases for people who: ● Drive on roads with loose debris or gravel ● Live in areas with lots of flying bugs (e.g., anywhere in the South) ● Have a nice paint job worth protecting ● Like, or at least don’t mind, the look.

ALBUQUERQUEBUG DEFLECTOR INSTALLATION
Bug Deflectors Installation
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Albuquerque NM:Bug deflectors create a streamlined jet of air that diverts bugs away from your vehicle, preventing a gooey, caked-on mess and the resulting paint damage. Available in several different varieties, bug deflectors can sport a lower, compact design for a more subtle appearance, as well as a higher-rising version for extra defense.
Bug shields from Mobile Mechanics of Albuquerque are built from impact-resistant acrylic that never rusts, corrodes or oxidizes.

A bug deflector cuts down the amount of bugs that hit your vehicle as you drive. It does this by creating a slight slipstream that bugs get caught up in and carried over your vehicle. They can reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning your hood and windshield, and they also look stylish.
When you buy a bug deflector, you should look for:
● Durability – A deflector made of aerospace-grade acrylic are best.
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Albuquerque NM:As wonderful as bug deflectors are, they may not necessarily provide 100 percent protection, especially when driving at slower speeds where the diverted airstream is not always strong enough to pull away oncoming six-legged traffic.
TIPS
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Albuquerque NM:

COST
How much does bug Deflector Installation cost?
Bug Deflector Installation Service near Albuquerque NM:Bug Deflector Installation cost at least $33 but can cost up to $130 depending on the brand, installation process, and design.
● There is a negative impact
● The impact is very small, especially for low profile deflectors
● Other driver considerations, like windshield and paint protection, are more important considerations.
Is a Hood Deflector Worth It?
The answer to these questions is always, itdepends. Hood deflectors are likely to be good purchases for people who:
● Drive on roads with loose debris or gravel
● Live in areas with lots of flying bugs (e.g., anywhere in the South)
● Have a nice paint job worth protecting
● Like, or at least don’t mind, the look.
