I absolute adore how Kathryn Hahn is using her current visibility and platform to highlight how Agatha All Along—a rare instance of a Marvel show getting award nominations—is a female-led and queer show.
"I never would have thought that [Kevin] Feige and Marvel would have had it back — this strictly female-led, gay/queer show about witches. No huge, big baddie that comes in. It just felt very different. Even “WandaVision,” we always felt a little bit like a splinter off the Marvel universe — like an experimental stepsister — so to have this acknowledgment is so buoying for what good storytelling means and what it is."

"I’m so proud, and I’m so thrilled for Marvel. They were so supportive of this tiny, fabulous, female- and queer-led show."

Wow!!!!!!! Looks like Z has picked another winner of a film!! 😁 If Variety is already talking "Oscar Buzz" for her performance in "Challengers" before the film has even come out, that is pretty HUGE!!!
I'm so happy for her!! 🙌🏾
Btw, everyone keeps forgetting to add that Zendaya is not only a 2-time Emmy winner, but ALSO a Golden Globe winner!!! 😁 I think because she was on vacation with Tom during her win, and didn't attend the award's ceremony, people always forget that she actually won that year (2023) lol. 😅

i have a little bit of time off, and i want to use it to catch up on award season movies. the problem is, of course, that the golden globes is sort of a fake award show. the people who vote on these awards aren’t part of a guild or anything. they’re just guys and dudes. the other problem is that a lot of the nominations don’t hit wide release until well after the awards air.
this is an aside but I love how they have a “cinematic box office achievement” category that’s just shit like alien: romulous, beetlejuice beetlejuice, deadpool & wolverine, gladiator 2, inside out 2, the wild robot, twisters, and wicked pt 1. it’s like saying “we will give a movie you actually watched some laurels so you can tolerate three hours of us giving awards to anora and the brutalist.”
a couple of thoughts outside of that:
I’m happy that the substance has gotten as many nominations as it has. the main issue I had with it when I first saw it was that it was just… so french while obvstentively being commentary on hollywood usa. I’m not going to spoil anything, but near the end of the movie, there’s a nye party that includes a topless kickline. this is DISTRACTINGLY FRENCH. we’re too prudish for that over here! but, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I love how deliberate the camera work is in it. it deserves a best cinematography or best director oscar nom for this. it isn’t coralie fargeat’s that she’s french and this carries into her work. she has a very clear vision and is able to execute it well.
I don’t love conclave getting a best drama nomination. there are very few movies that I watch and think to myself, “this would have worked better as a miniseries”. this was one of them. I don’t know how to talk about this one without spoiling the ending, but the last 15 minutes of it are so cheesy. it’s a slab of brie for dinner. i saw some people compare a speech at the end to aaron sorkin’s writing, but i walked out being a bit offended on sorkin’s behalf.
my wife (theology nut) saw this with my friends and me, and she went off on how disinterested it was in its catholic universe. it hints at a divide between cardinals in the global north and global south, but it doesn’t do much with this. it doesn’t address doctrinal beef at all. and the ending really skates over what the implications would be for the Catholic Church. someone in the theater we all saw this in loudly said “WHAT?” during the last scene. adrienne suggested that it was a bizarrely nested Trump thing because of how negligent it was in this aspect. a relatively progressive pope dies, and there’s a power struggle involved. liberal cardinals are going again an italian who longs for a pope who speaks latin, makes an event of being racist towards the african cardinal, and rails against muslims during the subplot of this movie where bombs are going off outside the church. this is a real thing in the movie that is never explained. i sort of see what she’s getting at. trump has been an inescapable anti-muse in art and it’s really difficult to interpret this stuff through that lens. the more I thought about this one, the more of a mess i thought it was.
anyway, those are some golden globes hot takes. I don’t know what else to do with my time right now.

Another possible first!
This year at the Golden Globes two women have been double-nominated in the categories of both Best Director and Best Screenplay. They are:
Greta Gerwig, for Barbie
Celine Song, for Past Lives
This is the first time it has ever happened at the Golden Globes. If they also receive those double noms at the Academy Awards, it will be a first for that award as well./
It happened in 2021 with Promising Young Woman and Nomadland
Wow! I'm sorry I got that info wrong, but happy at the same time, as it means more achievements for women directors than I remembered. It's odd. I remember Chloe getting the noms and Oscars for producer and director on Nomadland, but not her writing it or being nommed for it. And I did not remember Emerald being the director at all on her film.
I blame Covid, as I did not get to see any of the 2020 released films which were up for awards in February 2021. It's like the lost year of film for me. But, moreso, it's the lost year totally in my memory. That pandemic year stress and anxiety swamped out my memory of most of what happened in 2020-2021.

Anyway, I'm really glad that the movie that sanitises sex work and pushes the "sex work is empowering" lie didn't get a lot of critical recognition.
It took me awhile to realize that you’re probably talking about Hustlers. I assume you’re talking about Hustlers? I don’t care if you’re not, I’m going to talk about Hustlers! (Very minor spoilers to follow).
Hustlers is amazing! First of all it did get a lot of critical recognition. The only reason Jennifer Lopez got as close to an Oscar nomination as she did (and also got a Golden Globes nom, a SAG nom and a LAFCA win) is because critics were very supportive of the film (LAFCA stands for Los Angeles Film Critics Association). No one was checking for this film until TIFF and critics started her Oscar buzz there.
Secondly while it’s arguable that Scafaria sanitizes the strip club I would argue that she is instead incredibly protective of her actresses and very careful about where she puts the camera in order to avoid exploiting them. Which is why it’s a movie about strippers with many scenes set in a strip club and you never see any of the women fully nude. It’s why Lopez is introduced with a pole dance number and Scafaria frames it through the eyes of Constance Wu’s character so it’s less sexualized and more about awe in her craft and that she’s a star.
And while yes, Scafaria does show that the money, at least temporarily, makes these women happy she also has them literally break it down and talk about how the women feel disgusted and exploited, spend their cash to make themselves feel better and end up so broke they have to go back to stripping to get that high. She also shows scenes of the women being abused both sexually and racially (in one of the earliest sequences a man screams at Constance’s character calling her “Lucy Liu”). It is very much not a happy place for the characters and the movie shows that while many of them want to get out they either are deemed totally unqualified for any other work (Wu’s character) or the work they are qualified for is just as demeaning only with worse pay (Lopez’s character).
All the joy and happiness in the film comes from the women themselves and their reliance on each other and respect for one another. I really admire Scafaria and the entire crew for the way they took characters who in any other Oscar movie about criminals or wall street guys would be props, and emphasized that these women are living breathing people with hopes and ambitions and dreams and personalities and friendships and families. You could see how hard Scafaria worked to legitimize these women by using certain cues to guide the viewer (not just the no nudity thing, one of the most brilliant scenes is when Scafaria puts Chopin music over the scene of Jlo’s character teaching Wu’s character how to improve her pole skills. She’s borrowing the assumed legitimacy of a dead white male European composer to emphasize that this bonding scene should be treated seriously and not as an opportunity to ogle these women).
Ultimately it’s really obvious that the reason that the Oscars didn’t nominate Lopez or any other aspect of the film for awards isn’t because they care about not sanitizing sex work or not showing it’s empowering (they don’t care, they nominate films where sex workers are treated like set decoration all the time). It’s because they saw a film about an Asian woman and a brown skinned Latina woman who played strippers and immediately dismissed the movie as being silly, superficial and not worthy of Oscars. Basically all the superficial judgements Scafaria and her cast and crew were fighting so hard against was what undid them in the end.
Anyway Hustlers is so great. In addition to being a very thoughtful film it is also incredibly entertaining and easy to watch. I’m so happy for Scafaria, Lopez and Wu (really an unsung hero of the film, her role is less flashy but it could so easily have been boring and she works every moment). Even if they didn’t get nominated for any Oscars the film was still very much seen and supported and admired which doesn’t always happen to great films.
Watch Hustlers! My #2 movie of 2019!

first of, thank you for answering, ILY!!!! AND so much YES to the "how great SMG is as an actress" are you kidding me she is SO GOOD she's so underrated my godddddd truly she is incredible you can see she put her heart and soul (and the physical part my god) into buffy, love them both actress and character so much. thank you so much for inspiring me to watch the show I love it sm buffy is such an inspiration and sorry if it is an unpop opinion but I truly wish she had better friends/family tbh..
Omg no problem!! 💙❤️ She truly is so great and I’m glad that we can all agree on that. A lot of people often discuss (like critics, other actors and producers in television) how she was robbed of an Emmy. She didn’t even get a nom!! (Got a Golden Globe nom at least) But we all know why bc it was a “teen vampire show” it still pisses me off till this day. It makes me so happy that I inspired you to watch it, wow!! And I think it may be slightly unpopular but I think it’s mostly just in seasons 6 and 7 where they’re shitty but they have their moments in those seasons too where they are good to her! It’s a very messy world they live in lol

Bok, bok, we’re here! Crazy Rich Asians is capping off a very good year with two Golden Globe nominations this morning for the film itself and its lead Constance Wu, who received her first nomination in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category for her role as Rachel Chu. Wu is in rare company, and joins just a handful of women of Asian descent to ever have been nominated in the lead movie category (drama or comedy/musical), mostly relegated to the distant Hollywood past (the list begins with Machiko Kyō for The Teahouse of the August Moon from 1956, which also stars Marlon Brando in yellowface). On the phone with Vulture this morning, Wu was poised and thoughtful about the larger significance of the nomination. And, yes, she’s just as thrilled as you are that Sandra Oh is hosting.
Hi, hi, hi, hi! How are you?
I’m having a chill morning. But how are you? You know, it’s been a pretty good morning I’d have to say.
Congratulations! Thank you.
How are you feeling? I’m feeling in shock. I’m feeling really, really grateful. I’m very excited. I’m really happy, and that describes it pretty well.
How did you get the news? Well, I had my phone on Do Not Disturb mode because I’m always on Do Not Disturb mode. I didn’t know that the announcements were so early! So I woke up and I saw that my phone had like a million missed calls and text messages and I was like, Wow! Well, that’s really cool. That’s how I found out. Then I talked to my publicist and the second person I talked to was Jon [M. Chu, the director of Crazy Rich Asians].
What did you talk about with Jon? I mean, there is no bigger cheerleader for me and for the movie than Jon. So to have the movie be recognized [is] a recognition of his work not only as a director but as a unifier of the cast, of Asian-American culture. I really feel like he is our fearless leader, and I’m very lucky to have worked with him and hope to continue to.
Are you going to do anything to celebrate? Actually, tonight I’m celebrating Henry Golding because I’m going to the GQ Men of the Year Party to celebrate him. He’s the first Asian man to be a “Man of the Year” on GQ so that’s going to be a great day! We’ll probably have some Champagne.
Speaking of, it’s rare to have an Asian-American woman nominated as the lead. How do you feel about the significance of that? I feel glad this happened, and I feel hopeful that this will start the conversation on why it’s important to have Asian experiences centered in and leading stories. Sure, we’ve had a few nominations for supporting actors, which is, like, phenomenal. But they’re always supporting another culture’s story for the most part. [This] says that no, not only are you just a supporting person of somebody else’s culture, but your culture is something that we are interested in exploring and stories we’re interested in hearing. We talked about how some Asian actors think that progress will be when you take a role where race is irrelevant. And I think what’s important about this is, we’re saying not only is Asianness something we don’t want to neutralize, we want to celebrate it. It’s something we are proud of. It is something that has formed us as people. And to grow up as an Asian in a culture where you’re not the dominant culture, that affects character; there’s no way that doesn’t affect character.
But how meaningful is it for [a] young Asian-American, Asian-Canadian, Asian-British girl or boy to see that not only did Hollywood create and invest in this story, now the population is going to see this story reflected in the box office, and now it’s getting critical acclaim and awards acclaim. That sends a message that their stories are different and valuable and that their culture isn’t just skin-deep. It’s not just how they look. People are going to say like, “Oh, well, what about like Zhang Ziyi,” who is great! But her character and her stories can be very different because she grew up in a place where she was the dominant culture. So that’s what’s exciting for me, and I really, really hope that people start to see that, so we’re not seen as perpetual foreigners. We are an integral part of this country’s fabric and parts people want to see. That’s why they went to the movie theater to see it.
We’re both very big fans of Sandra Oh. Have you met her before? How do you feel about her hosting? I met her very briefly a while ago at a party. I don’t think she really knew who I was. This was a while ago. But I was so ecstatic. When she got those scripts for Killing Eve — which I am almost done with and it’s so good — she said she was reading it and she assumed she was going to be the supporting role. She didn’t even think that it was possible that somebody was offering her a script for the leading role because nobody had done it. And for an actress of her caliber and talent to have assumed that any script she would get wouldn’t be one that would have her as the lead, I think this recognition is long overdue for her. And for her to not only be centered in the story Killing Eve, but also kind of the Golden Globes is … so cool! She’s so talented, a true pioneer.
What’s your favorite role of hers? I saw her in this little Canadian indie movie called Guinevere a long time ago that Sarah Polley was the lead in. And the reason that’s my favorite is because it was the first time I saw her, and it was the first time I saw an Asian woman who in her craft and her acting was fucking killing it. To see somebody with that caliber of talent unrestrained was the coolest thing.

2019 Oscars Thoughts/Predictions
Tagging: @ghostofachancewithyou
Note: These are just my thoughts on each of the nominees as someone who loves films but also as a filmmaker. This is broken down by category and by nominee
Best Picture:
“Black Panther”: This was a great film but I don’t see it winning. If I’m being honest I wasn’t even sure it was going to be nominated. My thoughts on Black Panther winning are pretty much the same as my thoughts on Get Out last year. I enjoyed the film and if it wins I’ll be surprised but fine with it. If it wins I’ll be anticipating uproar but if it loses I’m anticipating uproar as well. “BlacKkKlansman”: I wasn’t able to see this so I don't have very many thoughts on this nomination. I enjoy Spike Lee’s films and I’m sure this follows as one of his best but I can’t say too much about something I haven’t seen. “Bohemian Rhapsody”: I see this more as the underdog film. While it was good I just really don't see it pulling off the win. Even the nomination was surprising if the Academy was picking based solely on critic reception. But I found the performances well done and I did enjoy the experience so if it wins it won’t be all bad. “The Favourite”: What can I say. It’s certainly a Yorgos film, no doubt about it. I enjoyed the story and the way that it was set up. I’m not anticipating this to win best picture but I was anticipating it to get a best pic nom. It was well put together and it’d be a surprise win. “Green Book”: Based on what happened during the Golden Globes I’m really unaware of what to expect. I doubt it will win Best Picture due to the films it’s up against but if it follows in reception then it is very possible. I’ll be surprised if it wins since I found the story lacking. I understand that it was more a family story since most of the writers/producers are related to Viggo Mortenson’s character (I know he was a real guy but I can’t remember his name). I just feel with the way it was marketed as a story about racism and friendship in American as well as a focus on the actual Green Book with it’s use. But the film itself felt lacking in this area and I believe it honestly should have focused more on Mahershala Ali “Roma”: This is my winner. I have a feeling that it’s going to take the top. It was a beautiful personal story for Alfonso and that came across in everything. Every shot, every line, was gorgeous and moving. I’d be shocked if it didn’t win. The performances are amazing, especially from Yalitza as a non-actor. Yeah, I’ve got high hopes for this one. “A Star Is Born”: Eh. The film was fine. It wasn’t spectacular, I wasn’t blown away by it, but it was well done. I found the shot choices and the lighting tied it all together. The performances weren’t terrible but I’m not sure that they gave it enough to put it as the top nominee. “Vice”: I’ve heard that it was a great film but I haven’t seen it. Anyway based solely on the other films in this category that it’s got a high chance of winning but I’m doubtful that it’s going to be the winning film.
Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “Vice”: If he doesn’t win based on his performance as Cheney, then I’ll be thoroughly surprised. Bale always throws himself into his roles and while I haven’t yet seen the film, from the clips that I have seen, he’s done another great role. Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”: His character has never been too difficult to portray based on the past versions they’ve had of this film. I think Bradley made his version only a bit unique by having it set in modern day but I mean, it didn’t thrill me. If he wins, ok, but it wasn’t something jaw-dropping Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”: I love Willem Defoe and I wasn’t able to see this film but if he wins then that’s fine with me. Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”: Rami may possibly win this. The fact that unlike the Golden Globes he isn’t in a separate category than Bale does make it a neck-and-neck race. As Freddie he was immensely convincing and the fact the Freddie is such a music icon as well as an LGBT+ icon does make the role difficult. Not because he’s a real person but because a lot of people are going to make judgements about every move you make as Freddie. Rami pulled it off tremendously and if he wins it will be worth it. Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”: Viggo could potentially win the race. Again I wasn’t that much a fan of Green Book but voters sure do seem to be.
Lead Actress:
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”: Just give it to her now. I mean her performance was beautiful and the fact that she’d never acted before is somewhat a benefit to that. Alfonso wrote her character to be personal, to basically be his mother and it worked. Her line delivery was beautiful and there are scenes I won’t mention (because of spoilers), that were breathtaking Glenn Close, “The Wife”: I love Glenn Close and if she wins it I won’t be mad. They haven’t been playing “The Wife” anywhere near me so I don’t have anything much to say since I haven’t seen it. Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”: The fact that quite a bit of her scenes relied on the use of facial expressions alone is insane. The fact that she was so convincing in her role with just the use of her facial expressions is a testament to Colman’s acting. I’m not certain that she will win but I have a feeling that there’s a large chance she will. Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”: She was good, no doubt about that. I think that her connection to Ally was obvious. She knew the experience of trying to become a musician but maybe not in the same way as Ally did with sudden fame. That being said I know a lot of people want her to win but I personally am fine with her only taking the nomination. Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”: This is the nomination I’m most surprised by. Honestly I didn't think anyone was paying attention to the film. I enjoyed it and Melissa’s performance, it was nice to see her in a dramatic role for once. I doubt that she’s going to win but it’s nice that she was recognized for this performance
Supporting Actor:
I don’t have many thoughts on this category since I’ve only seen two of the films in this. I have a feeling it’ll go to Rockwell whom I love as an actor and will be happy if he wins but I also feel they could hand it to Mahershala. Just like with Melissa McCarthy I’m surprised that Richard E Grant received recognition for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, I enjoyed the film but it wasn’t really talked about much as an award contender. As for Sam Elliott. Sorry Sam, I know you’re a family friend and all but I don’t think you’ll win and I’m surprised you’re even nominated because you were barely in the film at all.
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
Supporting Actress:
I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. Really in this category everyone was brilliant and everyone deserves it and I don’t care who wins because I’ll be happy either way.
Amy Adams, “Vice” Marina de Tavira, “Roma” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
Director:
I’ve loved all these directors for years. Spike is so deserving as a first time nominee and I’d love to see him take it. I’d also love to see either Alfonso or Pawel take it because both of them created beautiful films that I’m happy they reached out of their country of origin and spanned the world. I truly would be happy for anyone to take it and my prediction is Alfonso.
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War” Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” Adam McKay, “Vice”
Animated Feature:
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird: Maybe it was because it came out years after the first when I got over the hype. I’m not seeing this as the winner. It didn’t blow me away, it was fine and I don't think it’ll win. “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson: This was hilarious and if it takes Pixar down than I’ll be excited. I’m doubtful that it will win but I would love it if they did.
I haven’t seen these other three but I’ve heard good things about each. Whoever wins will be great I’m sure but I don’t have a full prediction
“Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Animated Short:
Bao is the only short in this category I’ve seen which means that I don't have anything to say. If it wins great, but I'm sure the other films have as much of a chance.
“Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine “Bao,” Domee Shi “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall “One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
Adapted Screenplay:
I don’t really know about this category. I have a feeling that it will go to A Star Is Born but there’s a possibility of it going to If Beale Street Could Talk.
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen “BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins “A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
Original Screenplay:
I enjoyed all of these films. First Reformed was wonderful and I’m glad it received the nom. I’m favoring Roma but again it could really go anywhere in this category.
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader “Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “Vice,” Adam McKay
Cinematography:
Ahhhhhh. The Favorite, Roma, and Cold War are the three top contenders in my opinion. I’m not certain which I want to win more. The cinematography for each was gorgeous and made the films what they were. I’m sure it’s going to be one of those three however.
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
Best Documentary Feature:
I’ve not seen any of these, I’m just surprised the Mr Rogers doc wasn’t nominated.
“Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu “Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen
Best Documentary Short Subject:
I’ve not seen any of these this year so I’m not certain who should win.
“Black Sheep,” Ed Perkins “End Game,” Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman “Lifeboat,” Skye Fitzgerald “A Night at the Garden,” Marshall Curry “Period. End of Sentence.,” Rayka Zehtabchi
Best Live Action Short Film:
Again I haven’t seen any of these so I can’t make a comment.
“Detainment,” Vincent Lambe “Fauve,” Jeremy Comte “Marguerite,” Marianne Farley “Mother,” Rodrigo Sorogoyen “Skin,” Guy Nattiv
Best Foreign Language Film:
I have a feeling that Roma will win but I’d prefer it to be Cold War. Cold War was a beautiful film and since Roma is nominated for Best Picture while Cold War is not I would truly love it if Cold War won Best Foreign Language film.
“Capernaum” (Lebanon) “Cold War” (Poland) “Never Look Away” (Germany) “Roma” (Mexico) “Shoplifters” (Japan)
Film Editing:
I’ve only seen two of these and while The Favourite had beautiful editing I can't really compare it to any films I haven’t seen.
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman “Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito “The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis “Vice,” Hank Corwin
Sound Editing:
I’m not saying too much about this category except that if they don’t give it to A Quiet Place I will be pissed. It’s the most deserving in terms of Sound Editing and you can fight me if you disagree.
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst “First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan “A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl “Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Sound Mixing:
Give it to Bohemian Rhapsody but uhhh. A Quiet Place was fucking robbed.
“Black Panther” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “First Man” “Roma” “A Star Is Born”
Production Design:
Truly I have nothing much to say in regards to this category because all these films had incredible production design and I’d be happy with any win
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler “First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton “Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim “Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Original Score:
Desplat is nominated and so he shall win. Doesn't necessarily mean I want him too although his score was wonderful, it just means that he's the big name on this list. All the scores were well orchestrated so I’d be pleased with any outcome
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard “Black Panther,” Ludwig Goransson “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell “Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat “Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
Original Song:
They’re going to give it to Shallow I can feel it. I am surprised that they chose “The Place Where Lost Things Go” as I was certain they’d nominate Trip A Little Light Fantastic or (Underneath the) Lovely London Sky for Mary Poppins Returns. Personally I would have loved is A Conversation was nominated for the live performance alone but either way they did choose a good Mary Poppins song.
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
Makeup and Hair:
Oh it’ll go to Vice but I’d prefer if they handed it to Border
“Border” “Mary Queen of Scots” “Vice”
Costume Design:
Black Panther needs the win. I personally think it’ll be the only win for the film but it’ll be a good one. Having to design that many costumes for entire nations in a fictional setting based off real tribal clothing is so intricate and they’ll be robbed if they don’t win. I know the classic choice will be The Favourite but who cares. Black Panther had the better costumes.
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter “The Favourite,” Sandy Powell “Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell “Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne
Visual Effects:
My bet is for First Man but they tend to favor superhero films in this category and I’m not certain where the win will go
“Avengers: Infinity War” “Christopher Robin” “First Man” “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

Only you westside story lyrics
#Only you westside story lyrics movie#
And the final curtain comes down with the hero dead, and his buddies carrying away his lifeless body. Tragic endings were for opera.īut Act 1 of "West Side Story" ends with two corpses on stage. There had been one or two previous Broadway musicals where characters died - considered a daring innovation - but either they were villains ("Oklahoma!") or they were poignant secondary characters ("South Pacific"), and in any case the shows had happy endings. It cannot be stressed enough how innovative, how stunning, the show seemed to the first audiences - to people like my mother. Golden Globes: Dinklage, Dunst, Spielberg of NJ get noms for Golden Globes, but do they want them?Ĭolumn: After four years of turmoil, 'The Music Man' is an interesting choice for Broadwayīroadway is back: Broadway in 2021 will 'have so many Black voices.' Theatergoers, pros say it's about time
#Only you westside story lyrics movie#
It may simply be that "West Side Story" - so shocking and groundbreaking in 1957, and to movie audiences in 1961 - no longer seems new. So why isn't this new "West Side Story" resonating with audiences? On the upside, Spielberg's take allows for a more vibrant picture of the city, and in particular of the Puerto Rican culture that is starting to add flavor and color to the drab streets. In the original show and film, the feeling of the walls closing in, of the characters trapped in a grim environment they can't get out of, was part of the urgency. The two lovers are not prisoners of the slums: At one point, they take a subway to The Cloisters. The new version, partly shot in Paterson and Newark, and actually incorporating the building of Lincoln Center into the plot, is more airy and open. The 1961 version - shot on location in west side tenements, soon to be demolished to build Lincoln Center - had a dark, claustrophobic feel. The original dialogue, pretty awful in spots ("cut the frabbajabba!"), is greatly improved by screenwriter Tony Kushner - even if his teen gang-bangers do sound at times like sociologists, walking us through the racial and economic changes in their city. The choreography of Justin Peck, mostly dazzling, falls short on a couple of occasions - "Cool," a high point of the 1961 film, is a disappointment here - but there are also none of those embarrassing moments in the old film where the gang members pirouette like ballerinas before sticking their knives into someone. In general, Spielberg has done a better job of integrating the naturalistic world of the city streets with the stylized world of dance. I wonder what my mother, who died last year, would have thought of Steven Spielberg's new version of "West Side Story," which opened this past weekend - after several years of anticipation - to excellent reviews and pretty dismal box office numbers ($10.5 million). The feeling of onrushing, tragic destiny was overwhelming, my mother said. The much-lauded 1961 film version, which won 10 Oscars, never came near it, for her. It was a moment late in the first act, when the two street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, sing contrapuntally about how they are going to prevail in the coming rumble, while Tony and Maria sing about their newfound love, and Anita sings about the romantic evening ahead. It was not the song "Somewhere," or the shock of the knife fight. And the moment she really remembered - the moment that made her cry - was not the tragic finale, where the hero Tony lies dead in the city streets, victim of gang violence. In later years, she talked about how she had never seen anything like it. It certainly made an impression on my mother.

Was that really the ending you wanted? (: just wondering bc so many people wanted it to end happy and with them together
Yes, that was definitely the ending I wanted.
I know that there was a lot of debate throughout the series whether or not Director Y/N and Harry would end up together, because it was just a very realistic story in a very unrealistic romcom storyline. I liked the fact that it was so topsy-turvy there, and that there was a lot of inner though and self-questioning from (towards the end) both of the characters and I liked exploring that.
Obviously, by the time we get to the kind of epilogue of the series, a couple years have passed. I alluded to it a bit when I mentioned that right before they loved to LA, Harry kind of had a bit of a panic attack and just went home, only for Y/N to buckle down and go after him. Their relationship was anything from perfect, and though they were at that sort of serene state of companionship and domestic bliss - as well as having a healthy work balance in their life - I still think that if I had written more about the time in which they were merely in a relationship between where the story left off and the epilogue began, they definitely would have broken up for a little while.
I think this is healthy, and I know a lot of couples who have done this. But I can definitely see Y/N and Harry both panicking and breaking up at one point, only to come back together in the end stronger and more supportive and understanding. This was Y/N’s first big and real relationship - her only relationship - and the fact that she ends up marrying this guy has to be kind of frightening. And so I can see Y/N going through a really interesting thought-process of thinking, “I want to be with the guy for the rest of my life,” but also thinking, “This is the only guy I will then ever be with.”
There’s also a bit of a power-play in their relationship, which I also hinted at during the epilogue portion. Harry and Y/N are both in the same field of work, but Y/N has more drive and determination and natural talent. She’s the only that scores the household names and the big movies, while Harry’s Oscar nom, though he receives it, is only for a supporting acting role. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with that and he obviously did an amazing job if he won an Oscar, but Y/N brought home two Oscars and is the bigger bread-winner of the house. I see in their future that it will always be like this. Y/N is always going to be more successful than Harry, and though Harry is a great actor and has been quite successful as well in the realm of this series, I see him being the more supportive and domestic spouse once the kids are born.
But what I thought was really great about the way the epilogue was written (not to be self-absorbed or anything yikes) is that Y/N doesn’t even think she’s going to be nominated for any Oscars and is solely focused on making sure Harry is having his successful and well-earned moment. She had this huge movie and it probably would have killed at the Golden Globes, as well as Harry’s film probably having gotten some recognition, but Oscars are a whole other story and I’m sure that Y/N was way too humble to see herself doing well or being able to do that well. That’s kind of where I see Harry thriving the most, is seeing how accomplished and talented Y/N is when she’s not even thinking about it and reminding her that she really is that amazing person.
For Harry in their relationship, he just wants to be loved. That’s really all he wants. He wants to be loved and know that he belongs to something. If you look at him through the series, you can see that that’s really all he’s ever wanted in looking for friends, and later, finding in Y/N and her love. But he’s also quite a realist, and so I know that once he’s had his glory and probably become quite well-known himself, but never quite as much as Y/N, I know that he would want to step back and give her the spotlight he wants her to have, while also finding that taking care of their kids, raising their kids, and having his place in their lives is truly everything he’s ever wanted.
So even though I know the epilogue portion was really short, and it didn’t give much into their future, I felt it was the most important nod to how their life revolves around one another in the most modest and loving way. I think it also showed just how much they’ve both grown in understanding what love is in others, which I tried to show in the proposal scene. Harry, originally thinking and knowing that this is a huge moment in Y/N’s life and wanting to propose the right way, decided that a grand and flashy declaration of love was something that would have her sobbing and overjoyed. And, unlike through the rest of the series where he kind of makes fun of her for having these lavish views of love, he says very seriously that he knows it’s something she probably wants and he wants to give it to her, but he also felt like that time was just too perfect.
And you see the character development in Y/N too, because she’s just so overcome with the love and sincerity that she feels from this man who has decided he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, that she knows she doesn’t need anything grand or extravagant. Granted, Harry will still give her this moment when he announces their engagement on stage at the Oscars when he wins his award, saying, “I’d like to thank my amazing, gorgeous, and talented fiancée,” which will definitely make Buzzfeed’s top moment’s at the Oscars list, but they’ve come to understand what love is together, and in the end regardless if they’d gotten together or not - even though I intended for them to kind of around Part 4 as I was writing - that was the main message of his one shot: coming to terms with how you love, what love means to others, and how to love others so that not only they feel loved, but you feel loved as well.
That was so long, I’m so sorry, but that’s how I feel about the ending through and through and I’m really happy with the way it all turned out, truly.

Reveling in Richonne
#46: The Kiss (7x5)
The Kiss of Life!!!! This. kiss. was. every. thing. Before I start, I just need to do my happy dance for the millionth time over this perfection. 🙌🏾
I don't know what's wrong with me but every single time I see this scene, I react like it’s my first time ever seeing this scene and I literally have the reaction of this gif above 😂...Like every single time, without fail, because this moment is everything and then some. Like perfection. Like tens across the board. Like mesmerizing and magical and definitely on my nonexistent “Top Ten Richonne moments” list. It’s like they sprinkled something over this scene that makes it where you have to watch it over and over. You can't not smile and cheer and celebrate every time you see this. (PS: This lengthy post is going to be half analysis, half pure rejoicing lol. I can't help it! 😁) Y'all, this kiss was something special and whoever thought to choreograph it this way should receive a medal. It was this moment. It was this exchange that took my love for Richonne to a whole new level, cuz it was the first time Richonne left me completely and utterly shook. Don’t get me wrong, I adored all their other moments, but this one was entrancing like no other.
Basically the low five put me on the ship and then this moment put me in the dumpster lol.
Like, seriously, round of applause to everyone involved. The light crew gets a medal. The stylist gets a medal. The composer gets a medal. The director and cinematographer and writers get a medal. And you already know Andy and Danai get all the medals. (But seriously imma need some Emmys or Golden Globe noms headed TWD’s way before the show ends)
This scene was beautiful. I've seen a lot of people excellently dissect this breathtaking moment, and people's thoughts and insight and celebration of this moment is so good and brings me so much joy to read! So a lot of my analysis is really just me preaching to the choir, but you know I have to join in and give my play by play lol. 😋 So, Rick goes in for that little hug and peck on the cheek I mentioned earlier. It's a “casual” husband/wife send off and it's sweet that he just wants some form of physical connection with her before he goes cuz...this is Rick and Michonne! (an epiphany that hits me over and over again cuz it's just so amazing and crazy to me that these people we've been watching for years are now able to express the love they've had inside for so long)
Like think of how many times, pre-canon, R&M have gone out to do separate things and maybe wanted to give a hug goodbye and now they can. Think about the "I'm still with you" moment that preciously parallels this one!
You can't help but be happy for them that they now get to do all the things they've been wanting to do. So, again, if all they had done was hug it would have been super sweet.
But instead, honey, we got blessed and spoiled! Cuz as Rick goes in for the hug, Michonne so gracefully and intimately places her hand on his face.
Just to do something as intimate and personal as touch his face, lets you know that R&M feel very very close and connected to one another. I also notice that Michonne immediately puts her hand on his face the second she realizes Rick is going in for this peck on the cheek thing. By putting her hand on his face so quickly it lets me know that she knew from the second he stepped towards her that she wanted to give him a more proper sendoff than the one he was about to do.
Like this kiss wasn't an after thought or some uncertain thing for her. She doesn’t just let the casual hug happen and then hesitantly think "Oh wait, maybe I should give him his entire life right now" 😂 No, she was confident and knew from the jump that she wanted to do that. Now, when this first happened it could seem to some like she was about to reject the hug. In fact, Rick looks like he's thinking that for a second too. It absolutely pains me when you see the quick look of uncertainty on Rick's face as Michonne redirects him. Like he was already a little hesitant to go in for the peck on the cheek and for a split second it feels like he's thinking "Dang, she doesn't even want me to touch her.".
Rick really thinks he's about to take yet another L and get rejected. But I love that Michonne doesn't give Rick much time to linger on the possible thought of rejection before she's letting him know exactly where they stand and how she feels about him, without even having to say a single word.
Like this kiss was a loud and clear "I love you" from both of them. 😍
I love the way it's choreographed for her to take his face and sort of lead the way here. It conveys oh so much. Like one; this is Michonne saying "Nah, we don't do that platonic peck on the cheek stuff. Our love is too strong for that." 😂
And two; it's a reminder of how R&M are equals. And three; it’s a reminder that they are so in sync with one another. Like Michonne can see that if they just do a casual sendoff it could cause more disconnect for them so, like the wise strong 👸🏾 she is, she steps in and she closes the distance between them literally and figuratively.
And four; this is Michonne teaching us yet another way to say, “I’m still with you”. Like so far Michonne’s taught us that you can say “I’m still with you” by:
Saying the actual words to him
Being the first one out to aid him in fighting a herd of walkers
Giving a warning pop to a chick that tries him
Pleading his case to a psycho while a gun’s aimed at your head.
Helping him make a bed
And then you can also give him the literal kiss of life. 🙌🏾
I love that now that they’re a couple, Michonne can more intimately let Rick know she’s still with him. And this kiss is so powerful because it feels like a game changer for them. Because it communicated to both of them what they might have not been verbally communicating to each other since Negan’s arrival and that’s that; there is literally no amount of differing opinions, or distance, or tension, or anything at all that’s going to break us up. We’re still with each other and we want to be with each other forever.
I love this moment too cuz, as breathtaking as it was, it felt so authentic and not sappy in the slightest. It just felt like grown healthy love. And yet it was still so magical cuz, y'all, I'm not a sappy person (or so I thought lol) but I could practically hear angels singing when this moment first aired.
Like I promise, when I first saw it, I felt like it was in slow motion or something. 😂 It was that mesmerizing. It just felt like it was straight out of an apocalyptic Disney movie lol. It was True Love's Kiss! 😍 I love that Michonne's leading the way at first on the kiss and then it does not take long for Rick to be right there with her. I love that he, of course, pulls her in closer and they literally get lost in each other, as any concern that they are on the rocks quickly disappears. Like you literally see them both radiate equal amounts of intense love and energy.
They are so engulfed by each other that it's like no one else is there. And it’s funny cuz I remember thinking about how R&M are doing all this with Carl definitely right there in the next room with the door open lol. But I love that for this one moment it was just them two in this world. 😊 And you can tell they never want this moment to end.
And y'all can I just say one more time...that's Rick and Michonne! That’s “Your face is losing the war” Michonne and “You gonna stay awhile?” Rick. These two have been knowing each other for the longest and now they're doing this.🙌🏾
I remember even my sister, who’s a more casual viewer, took note of this scene and was like “Well okay then.” 😂 Everyone took note of this moment. 👏🏽
Like if someone watches this scene and still doesn't buy the deep love between Rick and Michonne it might be time for them to consider if they’re a...
Lol. But Haters are just going to stay mad because this couple isn't only going to survive but thrive. 👌🏽😊 Their bond is unbreakable and this kiss made that crystal clear. The passion, chemistry, sincerity, unity, desire, respect, longing, support, and just pure love conveyed in that kiss, from both of them, is A1. 👌🏽
I love that Michonne knew that her man needed to be reminded that he's still the man in this world and so she reminded him of just that. Michonne always be knowing just what to do lol. 👏🏽 Like she wanted to remind Rick just who he is in her eyes. He is still the Rick Grimes to Michonne.
R&M are completely on the same page in this moment and it just reminds you that they are truly made for one another. And I adore how much R&M can say without words. Like, apart from “I’m still with you”, that kiss was Michonne telling Rick "I respect you, I believe in you, I support you, I want you, I love you" and Rick seriously needed that.
You can tell that Rick is overcome by this woman and has just gotten even more proof that he was very right in saying “this is different”. It’s 100% clear that Rick got his entire life from that kiss lol. 😊
And I love that it doesn't just end with the kisses! Afterwards, R&M both lean in, so beyond close to each other, and they stay in this moment just a little longer. It really is like they melt into each other. And they just visually look like they fit together like puzzle pieces. I love that as they just stay here for a moment it really feels like they are leaning on their rock and their other half. Like as hesitant as the scene started it ends with such strength and unity and power between them. 😍
It's so evident that they don't want to pull away from each other as the kiss ends and their foreheads touch. Like they almost seem dizzy from the immense amount of love that has just poured out of them. Their love is so powerful it overwhelms them just as much as us lol.
And then Rick says the only appropriate response...
"Thank you". 😋 I adore this very sweet and very accurate response. Like I know some people say Rick was technically saying thank you in regards to Michonne saying good luck, but let's be real y'all, he was thanking her for the greatest kiss of his life. (Plus, when she said “good luck” he said “yeah” so he technically already responded to that. 😁)
To me, the “thank” you has even deeper meaning. This was Rick saying thank you to Michonne for being his ride or die, for never giving up on him, for being there for him and loving him and choosing him every time, no matter what. He was thanking her for being her. (and, again, for giving him his entire life in one kiss 😋) With this world being more dangerous than ever, it's a big deal to leave home and you really don't know if your goodbye is truly your last goodbye so, as R&M head off separate ways, Michonne wanted to make sure they have a proper and fitting farewell, which of course is an epic one for an epic couple. So, in a way, this kiss was her also saying "Just in case this is the last goodbye you should know exactly how I feel about you". But the kiss was also very strategic, cuz I know Homegirl was trying to give Rick some serious incentive to get back asap. I'm honestly a little surprised Rick didn’t go tell Aaron their trip’s cancelled lol. Cuz after this kiss, Rick really looked like he was thinking, ‘Negan who?” 😂.
I know with complete certainty that Rick had this moment with Michonne on replay the whole time he was out with Aaron. As Rick walks away, Michonne watches both sad to see him go and also knowing full well she just put that man in a trance. 😂 She knows what she's done lol. Like Rick's now beyond whipped. Is there a term stronger than whipped? Cuz that's what he is now lol.
To date, this is my favorite kiss between them. Hence why I can gush about it forever. It was just so much more than a kiss. It was everything. It was their unbreakable love fully on display. And they've come so far since season three, and have had many moments in past seasons that could have led to a kiss, so it just feels so rewarding and wonderful that they're finally at this point in the relationship. I can imagine for long-time shippers this moment sent you straight up to heaven lol. 🙌🏾 😋 Literally every time I see a gif of this moment I can't help but get that same overwhelming joy I had the first time watching it. It's just so good and so magical yet so realistic and organic. Richonne is always so well done cuz it's always conveyed like grown, healthy, natural, genuine true love. And this kiss gives you no doubt that R&M’s relationship will not just last, but it will stand the test of time. They are ride or die, they are partners for life, they are one.
This scene was towards the beginning of 7x5, but low key the rest of the episode was kind of a blur cuz, as far as I'm concerned, this one scene stole the whole show. 😋
So, in short (lol), every time I see this moment I can’t help but say, “I’m...
Cuz this scene was, is, and will always be a masterpiece. 🙌🏾👌🏽👏🏽👏

2018 Golden Globes: Get our instant predictions
Meryl Streep in ‘The Post’ (Fox)
Nominations for the 2018 Golden Globes greeted us bright and early this morning, and there were plenty of plot twists afoot. Given the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s questionable voting body, it’s always debatable how much a Globe nomination (or win) impacts the Oscars picture, but there’s no doubt that the Globes — the second-most-viewed for screen junkies after the Academy Awards — demands attention. With predictable frontrunners like The Post and The Shape of Water, and not-so-predictable contenders like All the Money in the World and The Greatest Showman, all in play, here’s our early take on who will win the major movies categories.
Best Picture, Drama
Nominees: Call Me by Your Name Dunkirk The Post The Shape of Water Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This is one of the most wide open Best Picture races we’ve seen in years. Any of these five films could take the biggest prize, as each has their proponents. Dunkirk and The Post, however, seem like the two early favorites, and most conventional choices, with Call Me by Your Name lurking as the potential upset.
Our Instant Prediction: The Post
Best Picture, Musical or Comedy
Nominees: The Disaster Artist Get Out The Greatest Showman I, Tonya Lady Bird
The Musical/Comedy race is easier to narrow down, with two frontrunners in Get Out and Lady Bird (although both Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig were snubbed in the director category). Expect Get Out to follow in the dubious path of The Martian as the latest non-musical or comedy to win Best Musical or Comedy at the Globes.
Our Instant Prediction: Get Out
Best Director
Nominees: Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk Ridley Scott, All the Money in the World Steven Spielberg, The Post
It’s hard to gauge Ridley Scott’s chances here, considering the HFPA are the only folks known to have screened his freshly reshot All the Money in the World. As in the Best Picture race, del Toro has a good shot given The Shape of Water leads all film nominations with seven. And you can’t count out heavyweight helmers Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg. We’ve got a tough one to call.
Our Instant Prediction: Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
yahoo
Best Actress, Drama
Nominees: Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Meryl Streep, The Post Michelle Williams, All the Money in the World
All the marquee categories thus far offer incredibly tight races. I’ll call surprise 2009 winner Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky) the early favorite for her extraordinary turn as a mute who falls for a monster in the Globes’ most nominated film, Shape of Water. But don’t overlook two of the greatest in the game: Meryl Streep (for those keeping score at home, she’s up to 31 career Golden Globe noms) and Frances McDormand (who gives her best performance since her Globe-winning turn in Fargo).
Our Instant Prediction: Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Best Actor, Drama
Nominees: Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread Tom Hanks, The Post Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
Finally! An easy race to call. An unrecognizable Gary Oldman gives the performance of a lifetime as the world-changing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, and has been the prohibitive favorite from the first trailer… Don’t sleep on the revelatory Chalamet, who announced his considerable talents in Call Me by Your Name, or eight-time nominee/two-time winner Day-Lewis for what’s believed to be his final film role in Phantom Thread.
Our Instant Prediction: Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Best Actress, Musical or Comedy
Nominees: Judi Dench, Victoria and Abdul Helen Mirren, The Leisure Seeker Margot Robbie, I, Tonya Saorise Ronan, Lady Bird Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes
It’s a generational battle among three twentysomethings (Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan, Emma Stone), a septuagenarian (Helen Mirren), and octogenarian (Judi Dench). The edge goes to the youngsters, particularly the previously twice-nominated Ronan, who looks primed to make an Oscar run for her stunning work in the coming-of-age rumination Lady Bird. And there’s another contender who could skate onto the podium, it would be Robbie for her assured take on Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.
Our Instant Prediction: Saorise Ronan, Lady Bird
yahoo
Best Actor, Musical or Comedy
Nominees: Steve Carell, Battle of the Sexes Ansel Elgort, Baby Driver Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman James Franco, The Disaster Artist Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
For as much as it isn’t a musical or comedy, Get Out does give Daniel Kaluuya a chance to shine in this category for his largely unheralded work. Ansel Elgort is a major surprise for Baby Driver, likely heisting a nomination from The Big Sick breakout (and cowriter) Kumail Nanjiani. Ultimately, though, it’s James Franco’s race to lose for his transformative performance as midnight movie hero Tommy Wiseau in the hilarious and charming The Disaster Artist.
Our Instant Prediction: James Franco, The Disaster Artist
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees: Mary J. Blige, Mudbound Hong Chau, Downsizing Allison Janney, I, Tonya Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water
Octavia Spencer is the only one in the bunch to have received Globe nominations in the past for film acting (she won for The Help), although Janney has five for TV (no wins), Metcalf has two for TV (no wins), and Blige was previously nominated for Best Original Song (for The Help, which she didn’t win). This race will likely come down to the early Oscar favorite Metcalf and potential upsetter Janney, who play two troubled but very different moms in Lady Bird and I, Tonya, respectively.
Our Instant Prediction: Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees: Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project Armie Hammer, Call Me by Your Name Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
With no one outside the HFPA having seen All the Money in the World, it’s tough to peg the performance of Plummer (who replaced Kevin Spacey after multiple sexual misconduct allegations). Nonetheless, Willem Dafoe has emerged as the heavy favorite through the early awards season for his celebrated work in The Florida Project.
Our Instant Prediction: Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project

THR's Emmys: nominations reflect TV at crossroads "(...) plus a nom for the wrong Mandy (This Is Us' Moore rather than Homeland's Patinkin)?" Ouch
Anonymous #2: Ok but there’s no way Mandy is going to win though, right? I’d vote for Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), but maybe it’ll go to John Lithgow (The Crown). Or basically anyone else. Also don’t think LLG will win for best directing. It’ll probably go to Kate Dennis or Reed Morana (both with Handmaid’s Tale) or maybe Jonathan Nolan (Westworld). What do you think?
Anonymous #3: don’t know which makes me more angry, RF not receiving an Emmy nod, or MP receiving one. I am happy that no writers were nominated though. Is that a first? I was thinking that RF had a great chance at the Golden Globes too. But then I remembered Game of Thrones will be eligible by then, not to mention a million other shows. And don’t they only nominate 5 in the acting categories? There were a lot of acting nom’s I thought were just ho hum. But Mandy? He wore the same face in every scene!
Anonymous #4: If it wasn’t meant to be RF/Quinn, I think I honestly would have preferred if FMA (Dar) got the nomination over Mandy, despite how awful that would look in the context of the show. I feel that Dar, Javadi, and even Conlin and Reda were more compelling this season. Oh well!
Anonymous #5: Mandy’s nomination is the biggest fucking joke there is. Watch his performance compared to that of Michael McKean in Better Call Saul. He should have been the Emmy winner in that category. And I join you in the WTF for Leslie’s nom. But AFG deserves to be snubbed. The season was a mess and that’s me being kind. It must hurt him so much that House of Cards got nominated with a prescient season.
Anonymous #6: lol I kind of forgot Saul was in S6, yet he was nominated. Emmy politics are a strange thing!
Anonymous #7: Seriously - Mandy???????? My hate for Saul and MP is just going through the roof. Btw Ashley’s humour cracks me up. Mission over Saul for sure.
Anonymous #8: And LLG for 6.12. Good on her, but in the words of Quinn this was a surgical strike. To our hearts.
We all were fairly surprised that Mandy and Lesli were nominated. It wasn’t a zero-sum game with Mandy and Rupert, however. They were placed in different categories. I personally feel if Rupert were in supporting he would have broken in, but he was placed in lead. In the words of Bruce Hornsby, that’s just the way it is. As with many other things in life, the Emmys are best approached as a (silly) buffet. Take what you like, and leave the rest for others who wish to partake.
(Popular wisdom says that John Lithgow has the supporting actor category on firm lockdown.)
