Art Villas Resort in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica

Art Villas Costa Rica
Architects: Formafatal
Location: Bahia Ballena, Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica
Not far from Costa Rican town Uvita – there is a hidden small resort Art Villas on the jungle hill above the beach Playa Hermosa. 3 unique villas and one multifunctional pavilion are scattered over a plot of 2 ha.
When the investor approached the architects, he wished to create a place where the visitors merge with the surrounding nature, clearing their mind, experiencing luxury and adventure at the same time. He wanted to create a place that digs deep into everyone’s heart when they taste it.
The architects from the Formafatal studio followed the client’s assignment and were also inspired by the atmosphere and colorfulness of Central and South America.
Atelier Villa was designed as a private residence for the investor and his family. Nestled against a steep slope, the 26-metre-long prismatic object partially levitates over lush tropical vegetation. Looking outside, there is only the distant ocean or green hills as far as the eye can see; the back wall facing the driveway and the neighbouring villas is intentionally windowless, to maintain privacy.
The first and foremost priority is not only the idea of “erasing boundaries between interior and exterior” but also highlighting constructional simplicity and pure lines (pura vida >> pura arquitectura). The constructional system consists of a steel frame with a span of 4x4m.
Discreet wall colours in combination with the green roof allow the villa to really blend in with its surroundings. The ocean and jungle-oriented façades are fitted with large-size aluminium perforated sections which a) do not heat up in the sun and b) are rust-resistant. If pulled up, they double as canopies. The scale and pattern of perforation is different on each of the sections, thus creating an exciting play of light and shadow inside. The panels’ special coating is in the colour of COR-TEN. The full back wall is in charred timber cladding treated with Shou Sugi Ban, an old Japanese technique of weather- and age-proofing the wood.
Disposition-wise, the villa possesses the same minimalistic spirit as its shape suggests. The utility and storage rooms, bathrooms and the kitchen are placed along the back wall.
The layout of the rest of the house is very open; the boundaries between the inside and the outside world are gone and the whole space seems like a roofed terrace. Lightweight sliding partition walls may serve as a tool to create private zones and shake the space up as needed.
The patio reveals an infinity pool, partly roofed and therefore protected from the scorching sun.
The whole interior is in warm, earthy tones of natural materials. All of the furnishings, apart from the lounge and dining chairs, are tailor-designed for this villa and custom-made. Commissioned in the area, the major part of the furniture was made with the help of local craftsmen. Some components were custom-made in the Czech Republic and transported to the site. As for the Czech manufacturers, we decided to opt for the renowned Czech glass-making company Bomma and their Shibari lights that go hand in hand with the overall tropical feel of the interiors.
Landscape architect’s note – atelier Flera
Greenery and garden elements
A while ago, we were approached to design the greenery around several exceptional buildings built by Czech investor in beautiful Costa Rica.
The overall vegetation concept was quite specific due to the lot being on a very steep slope. We tried to maximise the space, engage and open up the garden, so we designed in various steps and small terraces. Elsewhere, we weaved in a long and colourful slide entertaining both the kids and adults.
In the plant selection, we preferred the local non-invasive greenery, selecting especially the edible plans from the local area.
The greenery is what bonds and connects the buildings in one complex. The whole hill where this garden is situated is called Achiote, Spanish name for Bixa Orellana. So, we played a lot with achiote around the garden. There was also the Costa Rican national tree Enterolobium cyclocarpu and we planted a few more around. Of course, you can also find banana plants, coconut palm trees, mango trees, papaya or less known plants such as annona muricata or guava.
Owner’s note
The Villas
In the lush jungle of Costa Rica is a space that transcends ordinary. Where day and night merge in a heavenly expanse of verdant flora, pristine beaches, and exquisite style. Here you’ll discover three distinct villas each with their own bold and unique architecture and style.
Art Villas is inspired by the laws of the jungle. Our villas strike a rare balance between encounter with nature and protected luxury accommodation. Here creativity springs to life as you mingle with the jungle’s breath, relax in comfortable, charming spaces, and surrender to your purest self.
Behold the vast, monolithic structure. Cool, concrete walls stand naked and confident inside the heart of the jungle. Expansive glass walls, jungle wood, and brave dimensions ignite, absorb, and reflect the raw elements of nature. Hand-painted walls capture the dynamic nature of water and mirror the surrounding tropical forest.
Glide across floors artfully designed with handmade Nicaraguan tiles. Softness, truth, and intention unite beneath your feet, evoking a sensation of antiquated times. Ornamental designs reminiscent of the past unite with the simplicity of modern design.
CoCo houses are inspired by seed cones, where nature contains its precious promise to the future.
Collaborations We are working closely with an international community of like-minded artists and high-profile businesses to organize, host, and curate retreats. These events will provide small groups of people and couples with an unforgettable mind, body, and soul experience.
Our journeys to various retreats all over the world have inspired us to create unique experiences where our guests can expand, evolve, and, reconnect with their pure self. We invite inspirational teachers to our ambient space to lead us to transcendence through various media: yoga, pole dance, art, lecture, and more. Creators of all types will gather here with us to explore and expand the limits of their conscious experience (see our Retreat To Transcendence page to learn about an extra special local event). We also host weddings and offer off-site retreats.

A Budget Bathroom Remodel in Atlanta Goes Clean & Luxe
Hoping to spend just $5K on their Atlanta bathroom remodel, these homeowners leaned on their Black-owned contracting firm for help
“After” photos by Jaksnap Photography. Stylist: TFStyle Homes, LLC
Written in partnership with the Sweeten homeowner
Before: Deciding to remodel an uncomfortable bathroom Atlanta
We initially looked for a move-in-ready home, but hadn’t found many within our budget in our desired Atlanta suburb of Clarkston. The bathrooms in our new split-level house—built in 1982—would need to be remodeled eventually; we’d tackle those jobs as we could afford them. Three years later and with a toddler in our midst, we were ready. The master bathroom would be our first big project.
We had many problems with the original en-suite bathroom. Mainly, it was hideous. I disliked the wall color, the warped laminate vanity, and the stick-on floor tiles. Not only was the pattern terrible, but the tiles were coming unglued. The worst offender was the plastic-insert shower. It was small and claustrophobic, and no amount of scrubbing would remove its mold and mildew stains. Even just-cleaned, the bathroom felt dirty. I couldn’t stand showering in there.
The search for a compatible contractor
I’d already gotten a few estimates, but we were looking to work with a Black-owned contracting firm, and hadn’t found one with availability. The fact is, not many contractors want to take on one tiny room, not to mention on a minuscule budget. Then I stumbled on a Sweeten blog post featuring Black-owned firms. I posted my project on Sweeten and found the general contractor I wanted to work with. I felt really good about her, and she was willing to squeeze us into her schedule.
Sweeten matches home renovators with vetted general contractors, offering advice, support, and up to $50,000 in renovation financial protection— for free.
After: Finding solutions on a shoestring budget
As first-time renovators, our biggest question was, “What is this supposed to cost?” We had a limited budget and no idea what was reasonable. Our budget was $5,000, but quickly realized how many corners we’d have to cut. We couldn’t afford to change the floorplan, so we agreed on the goal of transforming the bathroom into a pleasant, relaxing space. I decided to save money by designing the bathroom myself, and doing it around an existing light fixture.
A crash course in bathroom design
I started Pinteresting and vision-boarding. We considered replacing the shower insert for thrift’s sake, but the contractor said it would just get gross again. I had no idea what went into building and tiling a shower. I found out it costs a lot more to install small subway tile than it does to lay a larger tile. In addition, I learned that a shower floor’s drainage slope requires mosaic tile, and the ones that come in sheets save the most labor-wise.
With so many types of tile out there, we were glad to have the options narrowed for us. We chose large-format ceramic tile for the shower walls and sheets of hexagonal mosaic tile for the shower floor—in marble, as I wanted just one aspect to be luxurious. Even with the thoughtful choices, the materials and labor proved costly. We gave up replastering the walls, removing the stippling from the ceiling, and installing a recessed light in the shower, all to keep costs down. We even kept the existing toilet, since it was fine.
Coaching and economy
There were moments when I felt like, “We just can’t afford to do this the right way,” but our Sweeten contractor helped us identify projects we could do ourselves (caulking holes and repairing molding). We chose cheaper floor tile for the room. An inexpensive vanity helped, and I found the mirror at a discount home store for around $30. This allowed us to save and use quality materials where they mattered.
Our Sweeten contractor provided great input and direction—including talking me out of some bad tile choices and kindly suggesting bright, simple colors and patterns. She never took over the vision. She was organized and communicative, and we appreciated her helping us stay (almost) within our revised budget, even after plumbing issues popped up.
The final budget—and excellent outcome
All told, we more than doubled the original budget (thanks to our family for the generous gift!) coming in just at the starting minimum cost for a bathroom. This included labor, materials, random plumbing parts, and a zillion trips to Home Depot for the paint and other stuff I did on my own.
The final result is the spa bathroom of my dreams. It’s so serene! My first bathroom with a glass shower door and a natural stone floor, both of which feel truly luxe. It’s so lovely to walk in there now. Everything is well-installed and of good quality. It’s exactly what we hoped for.
Thank you for sharing your dream bathroom remodel in Atlanta with us!

Southern-inspired Modern Farmhouse
Recently built by Mike Stevens Homes, this corner lot Southern-inspired modern farmhouse exudes curb-appeal and many inspiring design ideas.
Here, the builder shares more details about this project:
“This home was one of our favorites of the past few years and was one of our Parade Houses for 2018. The customers came to us with a definite style in mind and some great inspiration photos, but it was our job, as a design/build company, to take their ideas and turn them into a reality. Their style oozed Southern Charm and we all worked hard to connect the inside and outside of the home. The 2 story porches offer amazing views of the Smoky Mountains and will also overlook a pool we designed for them (that they will add at a later date). Our staff architect did an incredible job finalizing their house plans, but we also had the chance to work with a local interior designer, Paige Stephens. She did an amazing job, working with our staff decorator, to get us decisions when we needed them, but also helping guide the customer through the selection process. She really helped our customer zoom in on their style and pick finishes that seamlessly tied the entire home together. She helped them blend unique details from their lives into custom features in the home with a story behind them. In addition to making house related decisions, she also worked with our customers to furnish the home with furniture and decorations that were in a large part locally sourced. As we mentioned previously, this really was a fun project where we got to really know the family, design the perfect homeplan with them, work with a great local interior designer and decor stylist, and work together throughout the entire build process to build a unique beautiful home. We are so happy with the results.”
I hope you have a great time seeing this house tour today on Home Bunch!

Postcards(Wildstar)
It started small, and at first, there was little meaning to it. Wide consoles with so many keys; numbers and letters and symbols both common-knowledge and not. Some of the keys were blurred out. Thick, aluminum-based glass separating portions of a wide space with white, metallic floors and steam rising from vents set into the floor. Empty, the walls and bulkheads bare save the rivets where the foundation fit together. The light was either blinding or entirely too dark, never anything in between.
Translucent windows with marks absentmindedly scribbled onto them: ‘Seven Silver Slithering Serpents Severed Six Speckled Sailors’ Spines.’, a crude representation of a toothy aurin with rounded ears, and through the glass beyond a rotating stretch of slate gray rock. An asteroid, dotted with structures -what looked like impacted starships- rising like blisters from its surface. The dark void of space speckled with tiny dots of light.
A round brown tea mug with striations of mint green running through it, containing what looked to be a thick greenish liquid that steamed. Tiny, round objects that looked suspiciously like nuts floated atop the surface.
They rarely came with tags, aside from the date they were taken, and the To: R. of Direbog. From: C. Greysky.
A picture every few days. No messages. Well, aside from the occasional attached -and frankly awkward- ‘Greetings.’
The commonality lay in location: all aboard a space-faring craft. All from the inside, of the inside.
They came further and further spaced, and then a final, text-only message appeared.
<I’ve been told I am disallowed from sending direct image files anymore. Too easy to trace, or some rot. But frankly, I would like to continue to feed that endless curiosity of yours.>
<I’ll allow you access to this instead.> [[xtlp73df.hic/kw3gk]]

Beyond the link was a repository that made the previously offered images seem a pittance, a drop of water in an ocean. Cheshn, it seemed, had discovered that perhaps recording all he saw through his cybernetic eyes held a great deal of potential for entertainment purposes.
There were stretches of galaxy milky and blue, reddish cloudy masses and stars too numerous to count. There were shots of planetoids and stars taken from orbit, with the light from the latter filtered through shuttered and polarized windows. There were entire rooms cast in what one could mistake for evening light but merely the craft’s position relative to the nearest star.
There were far too many pictures of food.
A small stone statuette of a sharp-edged and geometric eye sitting atop a flat, round base was mixed somewhere in there. It perched, somewhat out-of-place amongst all the high-tech, on an end table with a holographic alarm clock.
A thrown pattern of hexagonal lights shifting, shimmering, animatedly against a matte ceiling through greens and blues and reds, casting haphazard images of dense, watery forests. Perhaps familiar, perhaps not. A small plush vind with a floppy proboscis next to a sewing kit and a handful of black and green fabric scraps, from which the creature was undoubtedly constructed. Silvery buttons made for eyes, a zipper was set into its back.
The matte-black hull of a rather large vessel, a hatch off to the right of the otherwise featureless surface and...was that a banana floating in open space? Huh. Must’ve been for scale.
Some fifty separate pictures of four planetoids viewed from well-above the probable ‘atmosphere’.
And in the thick of it all, a flat-black-background with light-grey text.
<May your fingers stretch beyond even the skies of Nexus.>
