#and it would be bookended with positive statements by family or how the tragedy impacted policy change

I’m glad true crime is slowly making the transition away from the veneration and mystification of killers/criminals and more analysis of the sociological and structural factors that make them, the failings of justice in their apprehension and prevention, and celebration of victims. there’s still horrible media like the Bundy and Dahmer biopic, and I think their “legacies” have been so entwined with the narrative of the dark and mysterious evil in the shadows they’re never going to be recognized as the lonely, entitled, and incompetent pieces of shit they actually were. And that’s mostly because recognizing that means the cops failed at their fucking jobs, and they can’t fucking have that. But it’s now inescapable that the last decade of mass shooters were all inspired by the hype generated by the TCC over the shooters that came before them, so I think some of them are starting to actively disengage with the aforementioned narrative and just acknowledge these people are the ultimate outcome of highly racist, homophobic, and misogynistic systems of population control. They aren’t anything special or interesting.
#I’ve thought about this for a minute#but if I ever do a course correction with my career goals#or retire with good money#I’d like to create some kind of series in collaboration with victims’ families that tells the stories#that covers their major life events and accomplishments and those that love them#the harm that came to them would be maybe five minutes of an episode at most and would mostly be the event of meeting the assaulter#and it would be bookended with positive statements by family or how the tragedy impacted policy change#im sure this kind of format and retelling of the killer narrative has been done but#I want to minimize the killer as much as possible#and we need more stories about people being and doing good to counterbalance this currently bleak mediascape
