My mom: oh my god your foster sister is so hard to parent! she’s nothing like you were! I can’t get her to work on her missing schoolwork during the summer even though I told her she’ll fail if she dosent! tell her that she needs to do this and get an education or she will have no future!

Me, a college dropout who has no desire to be a parent to a human kid: if she knows how to read, write, and do simple addition and subtraction, she’ll be fine. you don’t need a formal education to get a job and you certainly don’t need to know any of that complex bs if it’s not imparative to your job.

My mom, offended: how can you say that?! you are teaching her bad morals! she looks up to you!

Me: you asked me for help on parenting a kid that’s not mine on an issue you know I have a differing opinion on. I’ve been chewed and spit out by academics and I know it’s not for me. it may not be for her either. let her explore her interests and put less emphasis on “learn this because you need to know this” cause she’s 8 years old and has done nothing for herself.

My mom: wait until you have kids! then you’ll change your mind!

Me: wow you raised two kids and they both turned out to be anxious stressed out messes that we’re forced into fields they hated because you refused to accept anything different, you are certainly the expert. but don’t worry I’m sure your 16 year old teaching degree is better than my actual experience in the current academic system. also this is why I’m never having human children.
