with the webtoon 2025 contest announced I am,, tempted to use it as an excuse to finally launch a webcomic i've been itching to start for literal YEARS now...
which means I might want to hire a sensitivity reader bc the main POV character (or, i should say, one of the two main POV characters, but the story starts off mainly from her pov) is a biracial queer black American girl and while obviously I'll do my best not to stereotype or write her in a racist way, there are also cultural things that I'm sure I'm just,, completely ignorant to as a white american.
Anyway, No, i can't "just ask a black friend" that's assuming i even HAVE irl friends lmao π€£
So anyway, depending on how far I get in the process of developing this webcomic, I may be interested in hiring a sensitivity reader, particularly one with lived experience as a queer, (preferably biracial) black, American woman who knows what it was like to be a queer black teenager in the mid-late 2000s :D
#sensitivity reader#Still not sure if I'll get far enough to need a sensitivity reader#and it also depends on if i can afford a sensitivity reader π€ for the long run#But i might want one before i post. especially for feedback/advice on making the character more culturally authentic if that makes sense?#Now you may ask. why is that so important to you?? um.#I didnt' even know about hair bonnets until like less than half a decade ago lol#You may also be asking βwhy make this character black if you're white??β#um. I always imagined her as black?? It would feel super weird to make all the main characters white just because I'M white lol#Also the other POV character is white so#funky's personal tag#also i'm not really entering the contest to win OR to become a webtoon original lol#I doubt my writing/art is good enough to win or even place#THAT SAID! I'm mainly using it as a catalyst to get this story going!#I'm so excited :D#(ALSO for clarity this story is NOT *about* the black american experience OR racism OR racial social justice)#HOWEVER! I still want to be accurate and not downplay the fact that it kinda takes place in mid-late 2000s π€·ββοΈ#if that makes sense?#like. this is not an au of reality where racism doesn't exist#however. the story isn't centered around racism#hope that makes sense
