Don't think I've said this before and I can't say for sure if this was my genuine opinion the first time I watched Breaking Bad, but...
I lose sympathy for Walt as early as S1E5. Not because he rejected Elliot's help; yes, that's one of the biggest pieces of evidence that this character rather feel macho than look for any logical solutions. But that part, I'm actually willing to excuse that as there maybe being legitimate reasons taking the money/job would have been a bad idea.
No, I'm talking about the way he talks to Skyler as they're leaving the party. First of all, hold the door for your pregnant wife, asshole. Second, it really just highlights how despite constantly talking about how he's doing this "for his family", Walt loathes the idea that his problem might be a problem the family has to face collectively, rather than his personal license to take revenge against the world. Yes, Skyler's kind of an annoying white lady in Season 1, and I get how being reluctant to tell your family you have cancer only for them to turn around and blab it to everyone sucks, but Skyler doesn't act like her problems negate the existence of everyone else's like Walt does. I get wanting privacy, but telling your wife point-blank that you expect her to pretend nothing's wrong? It's so patriarchal and so infantile in the same breath.
This guy was a dick long before he started killing people. Fuck'em!
