i think that falin notices laios being more withdrawn and unhappy in post-canon, esp whenever the topic of monsters/dungeoning comes up, so she figures she'll try to cheer him up and gets him a puppy to Supposedly raise like his father did with their hunting dogs but in reality he is 100% making his companion/emotional support dog
