I promised Sky Comfort after that "who do you relate to" healthcare au poll, so here we are <3
Some days Sky's mind couldn't be silent. Some days he wished nothing more than silence.
But on those days, he found that a certain buzz from the outside could still the restlessness of his mind and heart.
He slid his bare foot across cool stone, shivering a little from the chill in the air. Trickling water tickled his ears as the crashing waterfall that birthed it roared in the distance. A statue of a bygone hero was in the center, slightly overgrown with ivy and covered in multicolored birds.
Sky smiled at the forgotten statue. No one really came here anymore, so it made it an ideal spot to come when he needed it. The garden had been dedicated to the saint many decades ago, but the place became less popular during the war. It was much farther from Castle Town than he could afford to drive on the regular, and still not close enough to his hometown, but... it was a perfect midway point, and an amazing getaway.
Sky grabbed a blanket from the cargo compartment of his motorcycle, wrapping the thick, warm fabric around himself as he padded across the smooth grey stone. The ground was peppered with glistening stones of different colors, a mosaic with comforting swirls and patterns. Bushes and trees and the surrounding forest brought wildlife to the area, all the more attracted by the flowing water.
Slowly, Sky set up several blankets and pillows as a little perch beneath a tree. Then he gingerly lowered himself to the ground. The three blankets were enough protection to stave off the cold of the rock beneath him, and he curled more tightly into his blanket, lips pulling in a gentle smile. The crashing waterfall echoed from a distance away, creating white noise that hollowed out the upsetting thoughts in his head, clearing it and just letting nature speak for him.
Thank you, he prayed, closing his eyes as he just let creation carry him in peace.
#if you feel trapped in your head go outside <3#nature is a beautiful and comforting help#lu in healthcare#lu sky#it's short but I'll write more short comfort snippets#everyone could use some warm comfy vibes after all :)#and if so many people relate to the most depressed one of the bunch y'all clearly need comfort haha#have a hug in written form <3#writing

A RANT
A TRAUMATIZED FATHER
aka: a splinter defense
I've been rewatching a bunch of different tmnt versions and a thought popped in my mind. Is splinter an analogy for depressed/traumatized parents?
Most interpretations of him make me feel that way, at least. Specially the 2003, bayverse, 2012, rise and mutant mayhem splinters- mostly because those are the versions i grew up with and are more familiar with, lol.
The way his own point of view, experiences impacts the turtles and affects their personalities and goals so...i don't know how to express it, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when i see people treating him as some kind of villain¿
In almost every version of Splinter, there's a catalyst for his choice to raise the turtles as ninjas and a deep fear to allow them to explore the real world. Something happens to him that makes him either disconnect emotionally (bayverse/rise), place insane responsabilities and expectations on them (2012 i'm looking straight at you), or makes him be overly protective of his sons (mayhem, 2003).
I might be speaking out of turn, but most versions of the hamato/Splinterson family feel as if a part of their dynamic is that of a partially dysfunctional one, mostly due to splint's traumas.
2003 and Bayverse saw the one that took care of him be killed without mercy, vowing to take care of the young turtles that were affected by the actions of those who altered his world.
Rise and 2012 are direct victims, being stripped away from humanity without a choice, taken from everything they knew, betrayed, so they keep clinging to the only thing that still gives them a small blink of hope and happiness, four little turtles that have been mutated just as he was (one even directly sharing his dna with the turtles).
Even mutant mayhem! Sure he wasn't directly in some accident- But even he shows high levels of anxiety and fear towards the world, prohibiting his children to interact directly with it and teaching them that humans can't be trusted at all. He has been attacked and persecuted, but what makes him break is watching his own sons (the only family and precious possesion he holds, said by himself) get hurt and rejected by humans as he once was (mikey almost got ran over my a bus y'all). He deeply CONNECTS with his sons and clearly projects his own fears and issues on them, straining the way the boys perceive themselves and their own relationships within the family.
Experts agree that trauma affects the father's/mother's parenting style, which leads the children to adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms and attitudes. The effects of intergenerational trauma can impact many parts of your life, from how you see yourself to how you communicate with others.
“Trauma can inform nearly everything about the way we exist and engage with our worlds, including the ways we parent and model behaviors for children,”
Saba Harouni Lurie, LMFT and founder of Take Root Therapy in California
Am i saying splint is abusive? NO, but i'm definately explaining that almost every version of him replicates the pressure and weight he feels, which in turn makes the own brothers perpetuate said cycle of misunderstanding and emotional confusion/neglect
Sometimes, children learn unhealthy patterns indirectly through interacting with or observing family members. For example, if your parents experienced trauma they may tend to avoid distress and conflict altogether. They may relate to each other in passive or passive-aggressive ways. They may have trouble asserting their needs constructively or directly problem-solving.
Raph's anger issues, leo's anxiety, don's temper and loneliness (which sometimes seems to trasnlate on finding comfort with his computers/machines) and mikey's high emotions and empathy.
The boys love each other, they're family, but almost in every version they seem to battle their own feelings of inadequacy. They fight, hide their thoughts and emotions, have sudden bursts of anger or panic and fail to understand how to properly express themselves (heck, the rise turtles even go so far as directly stating they've barely ever been hugged)
Yes, every splinter has failed and could've done better, but they did what they believed was better for their sons. Their only wish was to keep them safe, hide them from harm and be able to live peacefully as a family; if training their sons to be ninjas was the best thing they could think of, honestly, who am i to judge?
My conclusion? Take the family for a road trip to the nearest therapist

Dave? Dave.
It's been quite a bit since I've written anything here, huh? Well, I guess as it has been for pretty much everyone, life has been kinda strange for a while now. Despite vaccine roll-outs and continually changing safety regulations, there's still a global pandemic on, and everyone is trying to navigate this reality the best they can. For once, we are all, generally speaking, in the same boat now (sure, there are huge differences between countries because capitalism fucking sucks and rich greedy humans are once again proof that things need to change asap, but overall, we all have to deal with this pandemic).
But I don't actually want to talk about the pandemic, it just exists as a frame of what I do wanna talk about.
As I have mentioned before, when the pandemic hit, I was in the last semester of my undergrad studies and writing my Bachelor thesis. Or that's what I was supposed to do, anyway. I did do a lot of reading for it, early in the first lockdown after university closed and we were all attending from home. I was lucky, I had no classes, I only had like three scheduled meetings to check in on progress of the thesis, but otherwise I was free of zoom calls and attempting to attend university digitally. So I read.
After a while, reading became taking a book with me into the sun, glancing at one or two pages, and then just napping for most of the day, and spending my evenings either playing video games or watching some tv show or movie. At some point, I felt like now was the perfect time to rewatch all fifteen seasons of CRIMINAL MINDS, so I did that, instead of writing my thesis. I still occasionally read, but most of the days I just felt exhausted and unmotivated so I stayed in bed and binged my crime show.
As the deadline for the thesis started approaching, and the time I had left fell under a month, a switch in my brain seemed to be activated and, oh, hello, suddenly there was a certain drive there for that thesis again. Which lasted exactly until an email from university dinged into my inbox a few days later, informing me that I would get another month for my thesis, due to the pandemic. And away that motivation and drive went, immediately.
Not much later I had a session with the therapist I was seeing at the time, because of the hormone treatment I had started early that same year. I had talked to him about my concern that I might have ADHD before because I didn't feel like there was anything we needed to talk about related to my transition, so I brought it up again here. I told him how my thesis was going -- or rather, how it wasn't going at all -- and finally, as I told him about some of the issues I experienced while trying to do work for it, he acknowledged that I may indeed have some attention regulation issues. He prescribed me medication to try out, and -- wonder oh wonder -- suddenly I was writing my thesis. I ended up finishing it on time (even though a week before I had a moment of "all of this is garbage, I will never pass, I should start the whole thing from scratch") and got a decent grade for it, too. I've been on those meds since.
Over the last, I don't know how many years, I've always known that there was something a bit wonky about my brain. There were always these things that seemed to come so easy to other people, and try as I might, I just couldn't make them happen. I, presumably, had a lot of neurotypical friends. I also have friends with depression, BPD, anxiety disorders and other neurodivergencies. I have family members with autism. I know my mom suspected I might be on that spectrum as well.
Reading up on many of those things I never felt like any of them described what I was experiencing. There were certain traits, sure, but mostly there was a lack of what I actually did experience in most of them. Even ADHD, when reading about the "required" issues and traits, doing those self-diagnosing questionnaires, I just never saw what I felt represented. And then I started reading about what people with diagnosed ADHD had to say about how they experience things. I ignored the more medical or clinical information, and just looked for people talking about how they navigate their lives with ADHD. And then all of a sudden it was, oh, yeah this, this is relatable. This is where my brain's at.
Suddenly it made sense that caffeine didn't do nothing for me, that a nice, warm cup of coffee put me right to sleep. It made sense how, after only a month, suddenly a well beloved hobby or tv show was suddenly of no interest whatsoever. Staring at the wall for three hours instead of doing a simple task. Drawing in class so that I could pay attention to what is being said. The inability to remember much of my life before 6th grade. Having to bounce my leg so I could read a simple text. Needing to visually break a book down into chapters with colourful post-its to keep me from being overwhelmed by the length of the book. And so many other things. Suddenly, there was a reason for that.
I've always liked doing personality quizzes. Or doing stuff related to my zodiac sign even if I don't believe in astrology per se. Finding out what my Enneagram number is. Or my Myers-Briggs type. Not because I think those things define me or describe me to a T, but because they give me a vocabulary. They give me options. I love answering a bunch of questions and then getting a wall of text telling me This Is Who You Are and then I get to pick out what is accurate and what isn't. It gives me words to describe who I am that I didn't have before.
And it is the same thing with posts or videos of people with ADHD. It gives me a vocabulary for the things I experience and it lets me express those things in a way I wasn't able to before. Before, I was like, doing things that my brain doesn't want to do, feels like running headfirst into a wall because there is no way above, around, or underneath it. There is no door, no ladder, no tunnel, no nothing. There is only running headfirst into it until maybe, hopefully, it cracks. Preferably before my head does. But that is exhausting and most of the time, I prefer to not get through the wall at all, if what it takes is going headfirst through it. Now, I know that what that is, is a dopamine deficiency. The task that needs doing, the task that this wall is, doesn't give my brain enough dopamine. There is no satisfaction, there is nothing to gain from that task, so the brain isn't interested.
One of the things that I recently discovered and helps me a lot in this quest of figuring out how my brain works, is this guy Connor on tiktok, who also has ADHD. His videos are both hilarious and informative. And also incredibly relatable. They might be silly haha funny videos on the dear old internet, but I walk away from most of them going, oh! oh that makes sense, good to know.
He occasionally talks about how ADHD is completely misnamed and how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder does not actually accurately describe what exactly people with ADHD lack. In one of his videos, he calls it DAVE instead. It's silly, and sounds a bit dumb, but I kinda like it. Dave. Dopamine Attention Variability Executive-Disfunction. Dave. I like Dave.
Y'know, I don't mind having ADHD. Presumably, I've lived with it my whole life so far. And it's annoying as shit some of the time. Especially when things need to get done and they just won't. But I don't mind that, especially now that I know that this is what it is. I've always feared that if I finally do go to a therapist and try to figure out what my brain is up to, they'll just tell me that I'm fine and there's nothing to worry about. And at first, my therapist did say I was psychologically unremarkable. But I guess if you've lived like this your whole life and nobody has really picked up on it, even a therapist doesn't notice (it's called masking, I've learned, thanks Connor).
But knowing is good. Knowing means I can learn things that help. I can take medication when needed. And, looking at the grades I'm currently getting in my graduate studies? Hells yeah, taking that medication and knowing how to deal with certain aspects of my brain helps a lot. It is incredibly funny to me that the best grades I have gotten in my entire academic career have been achieved in my Master's studies during a global pandemic. There is currently an actual real possibility that I may graduate summa cum laude. In my MA. That is insane!
Anyway, I am avoiding tasks by writing this right now. Oh, the irony. I'm gonna try and do those tasks now. Y'all take care. Cheers!

Burning Questions?
Having not been able to sleep a normal schedule in a month or so, I find myself Googling and oogling, pinning and Pandora-ing to pass the dark hours. Tonight, I ran across a thing on Buzzfeed titled "26 Questions Southerners Need to Answer." Now, having read these questions, I fail to see why they "need" to be answered; some of these were just folks being kind of jerky about the way we Southerners do things. Still, I thought I'd take an opportunity to answer them earnestly. Bear in mind that I’m answering these from my personal experience of growing up in the South. Being “Southern” is different for everyone, and this is my view and version.
Again, a lot of these questions are gross generalizations that spring from the fact that it's a world-wide pastime to make Southerners look stupid. This grinds my gears like you wouldn't believe, so I'm hoping that an honest approach to these questions might quell some of the stereotyping. Yeah, wishful thinking, I know.
So, ye Buzzfeeders and Twitterers, here are your answers to
“26 Things Southerners Need to Answer."
----------------------
Katherine @KAMickewich
Why do southerners call raccoon's "coons" like are y'all friends or smth?!
2:01 PM - 27 Oct 2016
Colloquialism. Not EVERYONE calls a raccoon a "coon;" especially since the term has become pejorative and will most likely be seen as a racial slur. Despite what you've probably heard, we're not all racists and bigots.
By the way, wtf does “smth” mean? These acronyms are getting seriously out of hand.
-------------------------
why do people from the south like mason jars so much
— 🍰 (@Ieftsbrain)
Dude, do you realize how many uses those things have? Seriously, though, "canning" has always been a big thing in the South. Also known as "putting up," Southerners have been preserving a gajillion different fruits, vegetables, relishes, jams, jellies, and the like since well before the Great Depression. Mason jars were cheap, easy to get, and reusable. Decades later, the same applies; except now we have Pintrest and the sky is the limit.
-------------------------
Kelsey Smith @KelseyS1117
Why do people from the south always feel compelled to talk to everyone they see? WE'RE STRANGERS. Leave me alone.
8:28 PM - 3 Dec 2016
We're a friendly bunch, what can I say? We like meeting new people, finding out where they're from, what they do, and what brought them to that particular point that day. It's not just being nosy or intrusive, we just like to make connections with folks.
--------------------------
Brendan Reilly @brendanbigcat
Why do Southerners dress for college football games like they're going to church?
1:43 PM - 28 Nov 2015
I think this is the hardest thing to explain, because college football is one of the most unique, quintessential Southern traditions. But, I think it boils down to the fact that we dress up for important things. My husband, a Mainer, thinks we're just trying to show off for each other; but the truth is that in the South you "dress up and show up" for the things that are important...like church and college football games. By the way, Brendan, that’s a pretty big stadium you’re standing in. Looks like you’re pretty excited about some sort of sport there, too.
-----------------------------
lauren sartorius @LaurenSartorius
Why do southerners call their shopping carts "buggies"??
4:53 PM - 8 Nov 2016
Again, this goes back to colloquialisms. I can't tell you the exact etemology of the term "buggy," but I know that "shopping cart" just sounds uppity.
--------------------------------
Chynna Te @chynnatown_
Why do people from the south call stuffing, dressing?
10:34 PM - 28 Nov 2016
It's not dressing, it's dressin'- but that's neither here nor there. In my experience, a lot of Southerners do not "stuff" their turkeys and Sunday roasters with anything more than veggies. What you call "stuffing" is a breaded mixture that we put in a casserole dish and bake separately from the bird. It "dresses up" the meal, so to speak.
-----------------------------------
ya boi rafa @rafaelvaldess
why do southerners get a boner from riding a truck in the mud i just dont understand
4:26 PM - 7 Feb 2016
You're referring to "mudding," and I'm fairly certain it isn't just a Southern thing. Sure, we do a lot of it, but have you ever done it? It's fun! I mean, sure, it may seem a bit neanderthal to someone who has never tried it, but there's just something cool about being able to slosh a big truck through mud and not get stuck. For that matter, it's kind of fun when you do get stuck, because then you get to play in the mud. Ok...maybe we're just big kids with big toys. Whatcha gonna do?
-----------------------------------
Tyler baron @und3adfanboy
Why do people from the south call men younger then them son?
11:49 PM - 19 Aug 2016
I think it's an emphasis thing. "Son" can be a term of endearment or somewhat condescending. As a term of endearment, it's referring to a younger person as someone you genuinely care about. When used in scolding, it can be a bit demeaning. More often than not, though, I have heard it used as a term of endearment.
-------------------------------------
Jessica Bradford @effervesce_jess
Why do people in the south insist on getting married and having kids so young?? Such a weird shift from the norm here, I don't like it
1:40 AM - 15 Aug 2016
That goes back to the South being an agricultural society for so long. We've always raised a lot of animals and grown a lot of food, and that takes a lot of hands. The sooner you were married and could start a family, the more hands there were to pitch in. While we've gotten into other industries, we still have a lot of agricultural heritage and those old habits die hard. Also, I would be you could find the same principles in the agricultural Midwest, as well.

Why do people from the south always have add an S to the last name of stores' names? "Girl, I found these at Belks, girl!!"
2:18 PM - 18 Jul 2016
Ahh, Belks. The principle here is "if it sounds like it's someone's name, we're going to refer to it as if that person owns the store." I would guess it's along the same lines as generalizing all tissue and calling it "kleenex." Yeah, it's kind of funny, and I do it, too.

People from the South... Why do you guys monogram EVERYTHING????
9:10 PM - 15 Jul 2016
Lord, child, I wish I knew. Personally, I'm not into having EVERYTHING monogrammed, but my Mama was. I really can't answer this one, because I just can't relate. I realize this puts me in a very small majority of Southern women, and I'm OK with that.
Just....no.

Why do people from the south call large roaches water bugs?
11:24 PM - 13 Jul 2016
We reckon those nasty critters like to be around water, and that's why we find them in our bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. They also tend to be more abundant in areas that have bodies of water close by. Ughhh, I hate those devil bugs.

Why do people from the south talk so damn slow, like I feel like they think we're stupid and don't understand anything so they talkslow...
9:39 PM - 12 Jul 2016
No, we don't think you're stupid. We speak slowly because we're not in any big hurry. I realize that our accents, combined with a slower cadence may make it sound like either we're slow or we think you are, but that's simply not the case. Frankly, that's one of the biggest stereotypes of the South that I wish people would put away. Life isn't going to slow to a crashing halt if we don't spit our words out at a mile a minute, so why rush?

why do people from the south have to say mondee , tuesdee etc
9:20 AM - 30 Nov 2015
That's another colloquial thing. My Daddy pronounced the days like that and, best I can tell, it's a mountain thing.

why do people from the south call all pop Coke like that's confusing to me
3:42 PM - 17 Sep 2015
Coke was born in the South, and naturally was marketed heavily as everything from a soft drink to a medicine. Coke was just what we had, and Coke (and it's other products) were around and had their niche long before Pepsi showed up.

Zach Zingula @ZingulaZach
Why do people from the south love to tell you they're from the south? lol
8:43 PM - 24 Apr 2015
Because we're damned proud of it. Despite the world's attempt to paint us as backwards, slow, gun-toting rebels, there is a lot of rich tradition and pride in where we come from. I was born and raised in the South, but live in Maine now. I find myself mentioning to folks that I'm from the South, usually when I'm going ass-over-tea kettle in the snow, or trying to remember that they don't have sweet tea or non-instant grits and I'm frustrated.

Why do people from the south love fried foods? Because they worship the Lard. #pointsme
10:07 PM - 4 Feb 2015
You kind of answered your own question. Lard. Again, with the agricultural tradition, lard was easy to access and used for a lot of things- soap, food, etc. In the old days, we were good at using things for as much as they could be used. Fried food is a tradition, and we hold onto traditions tightly.

Why do people from the south think Olive Garden is fancy.
3:26 PM - 22 Jan 2015
Because the rest of the world thinks we're inbred, uncivilized hicks who wouldn't know a fine dining establishment if it smacked us in the face. No, Olive Garden isn't fancy, but it's food that we don't have to cook after soccer and ballet practice, and they serve wine and the waiters are nice.

why do white people from the south always have weird names for their grandmas
12:57 PM - 16 Nov 2014
Great question. A Grandmother is a big deal in the family. Women are, traditionally, the glue that holds the family together, and when you're grandmama passes on, your mama takes that role; and then you later on. Grandmothers are so amazingly important, cherished, and above all, unique. For that reason, they deserve more than the same name as everyone's grandmother. My grandmother isn't your grandmother, she's mine. Nana, Granny, Me-me, Maw-maw, you name it. My maternal grandmother passed away before I was born, but I know of her very well from stories, and I know I would have called her Grandmother. My paternal grandmother, however, was Granny. When my daughter was born, my Mama didn't want to be Grandma, Granny, or anyting that "sounded old." Her name was Bixie (and, yes, that was her real name), and so we decided my daughter would call her Bebe. It's a personal thing, because Grandmothers deserve endearing nicknames and we love them. Oh, by the by, I’m not entirely sure that’s just a “white people” thing, but I could be wrong.

Question of the day: Why do people from the south add the word "salad" to a dish? It doesn't make it healthier or make me wanna eat it!
5:15 PM - 14 Aug 2014
"Salad" sounds better than "mixture of a bunch of random crap I had in the pantry suspended in gelatin." Honestly, that's the long and the short of it.

and while we're on shit that's been pissing me off, why do southerners pronounce "wash" as "warsh"?
9:24 PM - 28 May 2016
Yeah, that one gets me, too. That pronunciation, to my best knowledge, is something you'll hear mostly in Northwestern Tennessee, Kentucky, and probably West Virgina, for the most part. Kinda makes my head spin- there is clearly no "r" in the word "wash."

Savannah @SavannahMelvin
why do people from the south think it is ok to go out in the snow in their underwear
4:11 PM - 29 Jan 2014
*blink...blink* Who the hell does that? I really have no idea where that came from, but going purely on conjecture I'd have to say if anyone in the South is in the snow in their skivies, it's because they're trying to figure out why there is snow on the ground; because we're in the South.

Berlynn @berlynnyates
I have issues with how southerners pronounce "spoiled." What is "spolt" and why the hell do you keep calling your dog that?
9:42 PM - 4 Nov 2015
Accent, my friend. A hard "d" sound is easily cut off and shortened to a "t" sound. In this instance, "spoiled" is a way to say that someone (or some living creature) is showered with a lot of attention or gifts. If someone is spoiled, they have "gone rotten" from all that attention. Dogs are easily spoiled by food and attention, but I don't know that it's only a Southern thing.

why do southerners all have two first names. one name is hard enough to remember!!!!!!
11:38 PM - 24 Nov 2016
We don't have two first names; we have a first name and a middle name. If the two happen to roll off the tongue nicely together, we usually end up going by both names. Heck, sometimes a person with a first and last name that sound good together will forever be known as "(First Name) (Last Name)."

Why do southerners make the word oil sound like earl
12:37 PM - 6 Dec 2016
and
stacy geiger @stacygeigeresq
Why do southerners turn 1 syllable words into 3?some lady just lost pa-yu-ounds" probably from all that extra speaking
8:22 AM - 20 Dec 2016
Why do British folks say "aluminum" like "al-YOU-min-yum?" I get your question, but the answer is just a difference in pronunciation and cadence. It blows my mind how people generalize the South as being the ONLY ones who "talk funny."
Hope this helped y’all out!
