PSA: Back up your blog, check your tumblr e-mail for copyright strikes

Hi everyone, after suddenly losing my account with main blog + sideblogs last week, I would like to share the following warning with y'all. Not to scare you even though it is shitty, but to raise awareness. If this somehow results in me getting kicked off the platform again, so be it lol.

If you post anything fandom* related on your tumblr blog**, whether that's gifs, screenshots, videos, cosplay pics or even fics (?), you may risk getting a copyright strike (up to 3 in 18 months) or even immediate account termination. The chance is still rather small, but just know that it can happen.

*I say fandom in the broad term, so blogs that post about movies and series, anime/manga, games, celebrities, models, sports/olympics, etc. and it goes for gif and fic creators too. Not just accounts that post music or videos for example.

**I say tumblr blog, but this goes for all of the internet ofc. People have been getting this problem on any platform, from insta to etsy, youtube and twitter.

Disclaimer: I am no legal expert, just an unlucky blogger who lost her silly multifandom fic blog after 7+ years.

This will be a bit long and detailed so I proceed under the cut!

What can you do?

...To make sure you don't suddenly lose days, months, and years of content:

CHECK THE EMAIL LINKED TO YOUR TUMBLR. I know a lot of people don't do it, myself included. Tumblr does send warnings (though not always). It wouldn't have changed anything for me because I wouldn't want to appeal - since I don't want to go into this "fair use" discussion for just a fic & editing blog. I personally don't know the chances of retrieving your blog if you protest against the claims, so can't say much about that.

Back up your Tumblr blog if you can. Also save your Tumblr chats with people dear to you if you can. Account termination seems to work differently than deactivation. I was still able to see chats with people who deactivated long ago. But my blog that got terminated has vanished from everyone's DMs and ask boxes à la Thanos snap. I mourn my years of Tumblr chat with my best friend. It was not as if we even considered exporting/copying it just for the memories of the start of our friendship. But now that it's entirely gone, hehe, well. It is sad.

Save URLs and masterposts outside Tumblr. After losing your account, for I thiiink about 24-48hrs (I didn't clock, but it was temporary) you will be able to access it at least temporarily through cachedpages, if you have the URL. It doesn't seem to work for everything, but most of my Tumblr posts I could still see shortly through this site, even after I got wiped off the platform. I did this by googling my tumblr username + certain keywords, and the posts would pop up and give me the URL.

...To prevent getting copyright strikes and losing your account?

Probably nothing - but like I said, I'm not the expert, just the fool who lost her account. The termination e-mail will give you a numbered URL so it's not easy to see which post resulted in the account loss, but for me the keywords were:

Despite the 7+ years of posts, many followers and a lot of memories, I did not gain anything else from this blog and didn't think it was worth the (legal-) risks and effort to try and get it back. It would require filing an objection against the copyright claims with personal info from home address to name, and consenting to USA legal law stuff.

Even if I don't know the exact details, I'm sure they're not wrong, because whether it's fair or not, most fandom stuff has copyright issues in the end, so I can't protest against the claims with 100% certainty it won't get me in real trouble. Besides, I read about similar cases, lost cases, and admitted defeat right away.

They work with manual reports and most dangerously, bots, who seem to be randomly picking unlucky people to take down their posts and possibly the entire account.

So besides putting an entire halt to fic writing, gif making, video editing and other fandom indulgement, or the inconvenient act of censoring every single word and image, I don't think there is a way to entirely prevent getting targeted.

The one that treated me to the strikes leading to account termination was a certain Mr. Green who seems to have targeted mostly people on Etsy. But apparently now also on Tumblr. More about this I can share here for further information. I also share some other links that can inform you about how far the copyright problem can go. Again, no reason to panic. It's rare and I was unlucky. But it happens.

About Mr. Green, using bots all over the internet to take down fandom related material:

Tumblr post about his attack on fandom.

Long detailed doc from an Etsy user.

Insta post about also loss of Etsy account.

Also Etsy related, but same Mr. Green and his bots taking down something only because it used the NAME of an anime character.

Tweet about him and his company not being officially contracted but getting compensated.

About copyright claims on Tumblr - they are still rare, no panic, I just call it russian roulette and these are all unlucky people like me :')

INTRODUCTION TO MY BLOG——⍟

WHY I CREATED THIS BLOG ☆ :

Hiya everyone! I realise... I constantly change my theme because of my tendency to have new hyperfixations like... every few months so I decided to finally make a proper introduction post. If you've followed me for something specific like the violet harmon posts or the svt fanfictions and only those things that I'm sorry to tell y'all that those are not going to be my main things anymore.

This blog will NEVER have a specific theme/interest. This is a me trying to be unapologetically me! Hi Yoru! I was wondering if you have any tips on growing your blog? For someone just starting out or in general?

some overall things i think are important:

— figure out what fandoms you want to write for, if you want to be a single fandom only kind of blog (like me) or a multifandom one!

— have a nice theme, make your own rules, your byi, tag system, make sure to have these out of the way first so when someone comes across your blog they can find your rules and know what you‘re comfortable with etc.

— once you got more writings, make sure to have a masterlist for people to go back to!

— tag stuff accordingly, if you write dark content, please tag it, mention it. Mention who your writing is catered to, for example: fem! reader etc. etc. + also filter things that make you uncomfortable so you don‘t get triggered.

— write for yourself and don‘t be discouraged if you aren‘t getting much interaction in the first few months of writing. You can‘t expect to post 2-3 fics and already have a steady influx on asks, for example for me personally, it took me like 1-2 months until i had a steady influx of asks coming my way. I just want to get this out there because sometimes i see writers be discouraged about that (while they’ve been on the app for less than 1 week) but sadly you can‘t expect it to happen so soon. (also i hope this doesn‘t sound like me being as asshole, but it is simply the truth.)

— don‘t look at followers, notes etc. as long as you like a fic you wrote, that‘s enough reason. If you write for validation, you do you! but don’t be surprised if you get burned out afterwards.

— tumblr doesn‘t show your followers anyways so why focus on them + even if they would, it doesn‘t mean anything!

— don‘t be jealous of other writers, this is tumblr, no one‘s better than you and you aren‘t better either! be a nice person. (also if you see a writer you don‘t like, block them and move on, don‘t subpost and be desperate, please don’t be toxic and mean, you don‘t know anyone on here irl, we all have our own dealings, we have feelings, so just be a nice person and nice things will come back to you) + the amount of people coming into my askbox showing me stuff which only made me block them too because it‘s just childish, don‘t be like that, please be nice 💗!!

— this might be a hot take ?? but mutuals are not important, follow who you like, that‘s it. Don‘t expect follows back, you can make connections with people on here without following each other. So this is the section of this pinned post where i get super real with you guys.

I am very inconsistent with when i post, I have a full-time life outside of the internet, friends, family, 40+ hour work weeks etc and it often times just gets to be too much to do all of that and also work on edits. I do these for free in my spare time and Ive gotten a decent amount of hate for not responding quick enough. Im going to just cut to the chase here. I am going to do requests when i personally have the time, when i feel up to it, and in the order i want to. If that is not something you are okay with, then please refrain from sending me asks. I work at my own pace on my own timeline and to be honest if you are very very unlucky it might be several months wait if im going through something outside of this blog.

I have also, since last time i posted, moved blogs, my main is now different because i lost access to the email of my old account and ended up just abandoning it after it eventually signed me out on my phone. This sideblog is shared between two different accounts so that i like never lose it to anything like that as long as i have access to atleast one of those accounts so i just transferred it onto this one but i did lose my dms so i no longer have access to any of my old communications.

These are just updates tbh for people starting to send me asks again and so i can keep the information of my previous update in a new pinned post!

Honestly I dont have a stable DNI right now. Mostly because it just feels sorta useless to have one anymore. Over the last couple of months ive realized that no matter what i personally want i cannot keep out all the people i dont want to interact with. More than likely they will just send in requests from anon or sideblogs. At the end of the day though this is not a place for racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, or misogyny and i wont tolerate any of those things in my inbox. So for my continued sanity, i will be deleting/blocking any requests/accounts that make me uncomfortable. If you are blocked DO NOT send me dms or asks begging to know why i blocked you. I will not be responding and you will get blocked again, that is weird! I would 100% of the time rather you just make a new account and stealth follow me again than personally message me.

Basic Summary of my Rules

RESPECT: First and foremost, please be respectful when seeking roleplays with me--I am not a machine to meet your fantasy needs, I am a partner to work with and create something fun and mutual with. If it fails to be that, lets let go of the thread or content gracefully, like adults.

HOW TO THREAD: I’m generally laid back, we can start via an ask, so long as you run it by me first! We can plot in DMs and start a thread, or we can do something via responding to a starter! But, generally, at some point, I do prefer to plot. I don’t always just respond at random without ideas in mind, unless its crack lol. If I do not plot and/or have a plan, my interest will dwindle!

SHIPPING: I am all for it! But CHEMISTRY is KEY! Unless talked about, mutually, and agreed upon, mutually, to just go at a ship or shippy scenario without build up, 95% of the time I prefer some reasonable build up to a ship. It makes it better, feels more real and inspiring that way! And for my muses, I’m generally open to a LOT of possible ships, so we can brainstorm and see where things go. But if I inform you I’m just not seeing the ship, or YOU inform me that you don’t see it with my muses? All good! We can just casually toss away that ship, no harm done~

NSFW: I’m more the willing. I’m 25+ and intend to have occasions of playing adult themes, whether they be sexual, violent, or deep and dark emotionally and mentally. Because of this, I do not roleplay with minors, DO NOT INTERACT. But just as with shipping, build up is preferred, and I do prefer to talk through do’s and don’t’s with any NSFW content, so we can have a safe, fun time with our content! I also tag accordingly, and will tend to cut the roleplay from view with the Keep Reading option.

MAINING: I don’t really do that, though I don’t judge those that do. I may have a few favorites, or people I’ve developed more content with, but I am always open to more than one of a particular muse!

VERSES: Given this is a multifandom multimuse blog, my Verses are fairly open, though I do mostly like to have each canon character in their verse, though if we can figure out a fun plot, I can be open to fandom/verse jumping, and I will also be open to non-fandom AUs like fantasy/dieties/modern/ETC sort of thing. Then I do have an OC who is open to generally any fandom, though he has three fandoms he's slotted for, too (look for The Red Noble/Valek). But there may be some fandoms I either am not up for, for personal reasons, or I simply don't have knowledge or inspiration enough to do so no matter the situation, it's up for mutual desire and discussion!

WRITING STYLE: I will say, I am known to typo and I may not be the most professional writer but even so, I have a preference for my partners to be reasonably literate, writing more than one or two liners, and also a preference for Third Person! 

NO NO’S: I will not roleplay with muse-haters, whether it be hating on my muse, or I learn you’ve hated on a fellow partners muse while roleplaying with. If you want to bash a character, find a fellow hater or write or look for fanfiction--I do not tolerate using a mun who has a deep heart for their muse being used as a punching bag. I will not roleplay with anyone I learn has toxic and abusive behavior--it is a waste of my time and effort. I do not deal with bigotry of any kind. I do not hate on ships, or faves. I may dislike a ship or a character, but I will not judge a person for what they like if they aren’t intentionally harming someone, and I will not tolerate it in partners if I notice it. I will not roleplay with partners who harass me, be it for replies if I’m slow, or to force my muse if I’ve told them I no longer wish to roleplay--if you make me feel uncomfortable, attacked, used, or make roleplay into a chore for me, I will be forced to remove you from space. I also do not interact with anti's or ship or character haters--if you disapprove of a character, content, or ships for any valid reason, be mature and avoid it. Block and black list and turn the cheek. I will not tolerate people complaining about fictional content as if it is something someone actually supports and commits IRL. Please learn the difference between fiction and reality, and handling your boundaries like a respectful human being.

Update time:

As per usual I'll put the tldr before the cut and longer rant surrounding my feelings under.

I'm going to have very limited internet from October 13th to 27th, like to the point of probably only having internet for 2 of those days maximum (likely the 16th and 25th but we'll see). With that in mind, please feel free to continue to send messages but just note that I may not answer until the 27th.

There's a good chance that I am going to start blogging again around November 4th.

If I do come back, it won't be as actively as before (but more than now) and there's a good chance that I will veer towards being more of a multifandom blog than mostly a Taylor one.

Okay so longer thoughts around this all... So when I took my break, I wasn't sure how long I planned it to be or even if I could do it at all. Like I had been wanting to for so long that I expected to fall back into old habits within a week. So the fact that I have made it this far, and like with ease, has been incredible. But the truth is that this break had three major goals and I feel like only one of them has been even somewhat fulfilled.

Firstly, and the one that has been somewhat fulfilled, was proving to myself that I could use my time doing something else. And I say somewhat fulfilled because like realistically I'm still online more than I would've liked, just on like Duolingo or whatever relearning Japanese. And don't get me wrong, I still feel like that's better than being on social media for 15 hours a day and it has somewhat helped me manage my time better. Likewise, I do have a ton of offline activities coming up, but they're all temporary holidays. And it may sound weird to remedy that with coming back online but that leads into goal two.

The second goal was to feel more connected to people. Realistically, I still feel the same (very positively) about my offline friends and just feel more disconnected to the community I had here. And now that I think I can balance my time better with social media, I'm willing to try find a better balance for that.

And then there's the elephant in the room, which is tied with the third goal. The third goal was to get away from the noise because honestly? I've had very mixed, but more rapidly negative growing emotions about being in the Taylor Swift fandom since Midnights' release but especially this year, like more so than ever (which, those of you who have been around since 2015 know, is saying something). I had hoped that time away would somewhat subdue the negativity, especially because my expectations for Taylor have been far lower since 2019 than they were previously and I found my way back to her then. But honestly? It only reinforced it. I'm not saying that I hate Taylor or her fandom now. Like I will still go to eras in February and I love you guys, but I can't pretend like May didn't happen or that it didn't have real world/offline effects to people who I love including violence from others and self harm. And more so, I can't pretend like it doesn't make me resentful that despite god knows how many posts and tiktoks and whatever from Taylor Swift fans saying that they've also faced offline harm, people are still acting like this was just a chronically online issue that was 'overreacted' on. And like honestly? This year, and the acceptance that this stuff likely isn't going to change, was the straw that broke the camel's back with that stuff, not the whole issue.

Like my whole view of being a fan has changed; everything from engaging in her music purchasing her music (Speak Now TV was the first time I hadn't preordered it and only own it now because I was gifted it, the same will go for 1989 TV and tbh have barely listened to her music lately), to other media where I'm not as motivated or scared of FOMO as to feel the need to see everything straight away or get more eras tickets (I'm likely going to cancel the accommodation I had for the city I was going to get resale tickets for) and I no longer feel comfortable reblogging any photos that Taylor hasn't taken/approved herself. And that's led to a place where ultimately I feel like I am here more for the community than even being a fan if that makes sense. Like again, I love you all and I don't hate Taylor, it's just more than she's now at the level of just say The Weeknd for me where I appreciate the musicality more than stanning her as a person as opposed to it being both like before. And I've had a lot of fear around that, particularly earlier in the year because I may not be able to have the community without being as involved with the factor tying us all together, but I'm in a far better headspace now where I can trust that that won't be the case but also be fine if it is.

Anyway that was a rant and a half, but the point is that if and when I come back, which may or may not be sooner than I thought, I'll be looking at following more non-Taylor blogs. I still haven't made a choice on level of personal posts though, but I do think it's going to be more of a balance of positive moments in my life and leaving most of my negative ones for myself because while I'd like to think that I've been an honest influence by showing my struggles, a large part of my conflicting feelings about being online is just how identifiable I've been through posting those struggles, especially in a country where any onus of defamation is on the person making the statements. It's honestly a big reason why 99% of my biggest struggles from last year weren't posted, because unfortunately, with how uncommon some of my issues have been, posting them plus the selfies I have over the years (and tbh even without the selfies) has led to feeling like I have a target on my back and I just can't do that anymore. So yeah, this is another rant but while it's not set in stone, if I post anything about my life, it will be more manufactured and 'best of' rather than the whole picture... ironically given I feel like tumblr has often been my diary/venting space for the worst moments lmao.

But anyway, I've ranted enough and it's after midnight here now, so that's where things stand atm.
