The Masked Singer Season 4 Episode 3: Group A... again? Playoff Time! Commentary & Guesses
Hi all my Masked Singer fanatics! Time for episode 3 of this new season of The Masked Singer woohoo! Group A is back... and you are probably thinking how about Group C? Group C won’t be performing until after the World Series which is about last week in October to first week of November... so next week we will be seeing Group B in the playoffs as well, but having said that, let’s focus on Group A  (aka Popcorn, Giraffe, Sun, and Snow Owls) again because my guesses have changed like a lot since last week... I feel more sure about my guesses this time, I swear they are better and more researched this time...
But First let’s talk about the eliminated contestant who is....
DRUMROLL PLEASEEE
THE GIRAFFE
Tumblr media
Performance: He sang “Get Down on It” by Kool & the Gang and it was much better than his first performance, even though the beginning was a bit scary. However, I kind of figured he was going to go home because the rest kind of outshined him by a lot.
Anyways, the Giraffe ended up being...
*INSERT DRUMROLL AND AN AUDIENCE SCREAMING “TAKE IT OFF”*
BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN
Tumblr media
And if you are like, um who... same! Well he is from the hit show Beverly Hills 90210 and he’s Megan Fox’s ex husband.... and I actually was convinced due to a large amount of YouTube comments saying that it was him because of the clues (did you see how wonderful that segue was? Come on, that was flawless):
The Fox from Season 2 and Transformers clues= his ex wife/mother to his kids, Megan Fox reference
Peach Pit= famous scene from 90210 (idk man I’ve heard of the show but never seen it, don’t judge me)
Robins on his shoulders= nod to him being best friends with Robin Thicke (we’ll talk about that hilarious moment in a second, btw spoiler alert Robin didn't guess his best friend) since they were both 16
Golden Ear Time:
It’s been a while since last time they didn’t show it (btw Jenny got a point for guessing Gremlin) so lemme explain this is the segment where I talk about the judges’ guesses... but today I am just gonna talk about Ken and Robin because they had some funny moments with these guesses (oh and btw I am gonna do judges’ guesses for the rest of them, and Joel McHale was a guest judge so he’s included below.. just so you guys know who I mean when I say Joel)
So Ken guessed Shia Lebouf.... um, ok? Not the first time... What’s funny tho is that his explanation for his answer was so much that even the Giraffe fell asleep like damn lmao
Then Robin... his best friend since age 16 (these men are both in their 40s, married/divorced with kids and everything), his neighbor, they were in a 2 man band together.... and HE STILL DIDN’T GUESS HIM (and a bunch of 90210 fans did and even got the reference wowwww). The best part was his face when he saw it was Brain, he was like nooooooooo I done messed up (I was about to curse, but this is a family show), funniest thing ever 10/10 would recommend watching just for that reaction
Anyways, we are done here, now to the final 3 for Group A:
1. THE POPCORN
Tumblr media
Performance: She sang “Falling” by Harry Styles and damn what an improvement! This is the stuff I was looking for when I saw how adorable her costume was. Omg this was my favorite performance of the night, it was so memorable and amazing!
As for my guess, I changed my answer and I feel confident about this one, I am locking it in....
I think that the Popcorn is 80s pop star....
TAYLOR DAYNE
Tumblr media
Here’s why, clues please:
Mention of her being sick and having anxiety as a kid= when she was 5 she underwent ureteral reimplantation surgery and struggled with panic attacks, anxiety, and agoraphobia (fear of open/crowded spaces)
Crimper and Rubik's cube= 80s reference, when she started her career (1985) and gained success
LGBTQ+ Flag= huge LGBTQ+ supporter
Venus= planet of love, which most of her songs are about
Judges’ Guesses:
Ken: Katy Perry?! (I know it’s Ken and he’s not great at this, but really?!)
Joel: Gloria Gaynor (meh, that’s better, I’ve seen this guess a bit, but nope)
Jenny: Vanessa Williams (nope, I don’t think so Jenny, that’s worse than Gloria Gaynor)
2. THE SNOW OWLS
Tumblr media
Performance: They sang “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by John Legend and Meghan Trainor and I really heard the country in their voice this time and they sounded older so the moment I heard them I was like yeah nope not Julianne and Derek at all. However, even though I love them, I really preferred their first performance even though this one was cute and I really want them to go super far.
As for my guess, I changed my answer and thank you to all the people who helped me out by yelling at me on the YouTube comments section, I am gonna go with country duo....
CLINT BLACK AND HIS WIFE LISA HARTMAN
Tumblr media
Here’s why, clues please:
Witch hat= Lisa played a witch, Tabitha, in the Bewitched sequel
Going through a messy breakup = Clint had a pretty bad legal falling out with his management company
Anchor with MANagement= Clint was in a movie named Anger Management in 2004
Opportunity fit for a queen= their song together “When I say I do” going to the Tonight Show and her being apprehensive about it, but him pushing her to do it.
Judges’ Guesses:
Ken: Will Ferrell and Rachael McAdams (what’s your proof?)
Joel: Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood (I like that one, pretty close)
Jenny: Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman (also close not mad at this guess)
3. THE SUN
Tumblr media
Performance: She sang "Praying” by Kesha and wow, so good! I loved it so much, her and the seahorse are stiff competition. She’s amazing, I am really into her, she’s one of my faves.
As for my guess, I am doubling down on my last guess (only one I felt good about).. Let’s go:
LEANN RIMES
Tumblr media
Here’s why I’m doubling down, clues please:
Fractured home= parents were divorced
Into the woods= she used to date Tiger Woods (say what now?! yes this is real, I searched it up after reading a comment on YouTube)
Ugly Rumors= She appeared in Coyote Ugly/ sang for the soundtrack and there were really horrible rumors about her and her divorce
Over the moon= her songs: can’t fight the moonlight and nothing new under the moon
8 Ball= She was on Star Search at age 8
Judges’ Guesses:
Nicole: Carrie Underwood (her logic is bad, but close enough)
Jenny: Mandy Moore (um, idk the voice doesn’t match)
Robin: Katherine McPhee (I like his logic, but no, the voice is too distinct)
Alright so that’s it! Sorry for it being late but better late than never. I hope you guys enjoy! Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments and I’ll see you in a couple of days for the Group B playoffs (little fun prediction if you made it this far: I think the Whatchamacallit is next to leave)! BYE!!! 👋🏼

The Universe Has A Way
So I’m working on a multi-chapter John/Cliff fic. I will also post the link here so you guys can also read it on AO3. Hope you guys enjoy it!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21640435/chapters/51602980
They say that when one’s soulmate dies before their time, the Universe will go about to ensure to correct it. That the Universe is fair and will replace that lost soulmate with another. For humans can never live alone. To live alone was to wither and die, a first death before they were laid to rest and their souls would join the stars above.
And so when Cliff lost his wife, the Universe got to work.
John remembered when he had met the man whom would become his Captain. At first, he had been concerned that the man would be a jerk and just a terrible leader like a few of the squad leaders he had been under.
To his astonishment, the Captain was a respectful, kind and yet stern man. He made him feel as if he was part of a larger family, and that bond would continuously grow whenever they would go into another death-defying mission after mission surviving by the inch of their skin. They were all comrades and then suddenly one day, John started to fall for him. Hard.
He hadn’t dare say anything, fearing that it would ruin his relationship with the Captain and he didn’t even know if the Captain ever held feelings for a man. John had relationships with women and men before but as for his Captain’s love life, he had no clue and he didn’t dare risk it.
But even though he kept his feelings for the Captain to himself even after the war was finally over, his relationship with Cliff started to fall apart. They didn’t fall out on terrible terms no. It was just Cliff met the love of his life and slowly but steadily they stopped hanging out especially when Lisa got pregnant.
It did hurt but he did not mind. In fact, he was happy that his Captain and wife were happy and ready to start a family. It was unfortunate that they did fall out of touch. The last he heard of them was that Lisa was already 14 weeks along.
Only for fate to bring them back together again but in the worst circumstances possible. During the time he had lost contact with Cliff, he had been hired to be a bodyguard for the CEO of Bridges, an up and coming biotech company. Cliff however would be going through the worst days of his life.
John never expected to meet Cliff and especially in the ICU unit of a Bridges hospital. Worst, he never expected to see Lisa brain dead on the bed hooked up to all sorts of tech courtesy of Bridges keeping her alive. “Captain…”
Cliff, whom was sitting by his wife’s bed, looked up and nearly did a double take when he saw the former soldier. “John?”
“I-I came as soon as I heard. I didn’t know.” John said, walking around the bed. Sorrow filled his heart when he turned to look at Lisa then back at the grieving older man. “I’m so sorry.” John murmurs, placing a hand on Cliff’s shoulder and squeezed letting the man know he wasn’t alone anymore.
“They say she’s never going to wake up. And my son… so far he’s fine.”
Cliff then got up and without a word, pulls the man into a firm hug. “I can’t… I can’t lose my son too, John. Lisa… I’m hoping she can still make it but I don’t know anymore… I can’t lose him too.” He chokes out, gripping onto the younger man as if he were his anchor in this terrible storm that he was trapped in.
“Bridges are doing their best. He’ll be fine.” John says, trying to reassure the man. He prayed so too. God, what had his Captain done to deserve this?
Cliff couldn’t speak, his composure breaking down as he wept, grief engulfing him as he remembered his dear wife whom laid on the bed brain dead but only kept alive by these machines and his son in the neonatal ICU kept alive inside the incubator. As much as he hoped that his wife would recover, he knew deep down there was nothing he could do to save his wife. He only prayed his son would pull through.
28 weeks. He was too early and too young to be out in this world right now. But it had been a matter of life and death. The doctor and the medical staff had to perform an emergency C-section lest Sam dies with his mother. When the doctor had let him in and he saw his son for the first time, he cried seeing how vulnerable his baby son was. He swore then that he would be there for him and for his mother no matter how long it took and how hopeless it seemed to be. He wouldn’t give up on any of them.
Still, the stress from today and the grief and anguish filling him was just too much even for the hardened Captain.
“He’ll pull through.” John murmurs, tightening his arms around the Captain.
--------------------
When John came to visit the Captain again a few days later, he learned from the receptionist that the man was in the neonatal ICU and his heart went to his throat. Dread filled his chest and when he ran into the neonatal ICU, his worst nightmares were confirmed.
Cliff was in a state. He was sobbing uncontrollably leaning over the incubator in which his son was kept in and when he saw the younger man, he had nearly bowled into John and buried his face into the man’s shoulder shaking from head to toe.
“What happened, Captain? What’s going on?” John asks, bracing himself for the answer yet dreading it at the same time.
“S-Sam… the doctor told me that his condition has deteriorated, John. H-He may not make it through the night.” The older man sobbed.
John couldn’t bear to see his Captain so broken and just engulfed in great anguish and sorrow. It wasn’t fair for his Captain. He’s a good man, an upstanding Captain, a loving husband and a great father seeing from how he was doing his best to take care of both his wife and his prematurely born son whom was now dying.
Looking over Cliff’s shoulder, John just wanted to cry seeing how many tubes were running in and out of the small baby inside the incubator. It was just heartbreaking even for him and he wasn’t even a father.
Still, if this child has a part of the Captain, he had an inkling that Sam wouldn’t be giving up without a fight just like his father never gave up on saving him and his squad whenever they were caught in a pickle in the many missions they had gone through.
“Don’t give up yet, Captain. If Sam is anything just like you, then he isn’t one to give up without a fight.”
John pulls back then, holding the Captain by his shoulders. “Don’t give up now, Captain. I know you. You’re not one to give up not in battle and not now. I’ll stay here by your side to help you keep an eye on Sam and support you throughout this ordeal.” He says. John wasn't planning on leaving and abandoning the Captain. Cliff had always saved him. Now it was his turn to return that debt.
“I… I appreciate it, John. You have been a great friend. I… couldn’t ask for a better friend from you.” Cliff murmurs, wiping away the tears from his eyes.
“Come on. Let’s go and take a seat by the incubator. We can keep an eye on Sam then.” John suggests, gently steering the man towards the chair by the incubator. Getting another chair, John drags it over and takes a seat then right beside Cliff.
Placing a hand over the Captain’s shoulder as a means of supporting the older man, both Cliff and John kept watch the entire night over little Sam, their hearts racing and worrying for the boy’s life but still holding a glimmer of hope that he could pull through.
And he did pull through miraculously.
As for Lisa… unfortunately miracles can only last for so long.

Beah Richard’s Poetic Influence: Beah: A Black Woman Speaks (Lisa GayHamilton, 2003).
“And I, a woman black, should speak of white womanhood, my husbands, my fathers, my brothers, my sons, die for it, because of it, and their blood chilled in electric chairs, stopped by hangman’s noose, cooked by lynch mobs fire, spilled by white supremacists’ mad desire to kill for profit… they said, the white supremacists said, that you were better than me, that your fair brow should never know the sweat of slavery, they lied. White woman too is enslaved, the difference is, degree. They brought me here in chains, they brought you here willing slaves to man.” – Beah Richards, A Black Woman Speaks.

Beah Richards’ lifetime as an actress and poet models the perplexing notion of racism and sexism in the United States. Through art, Richards was able to show the complexity of being an African American female actor, especially one who fully embraced her identity as a Black woman. LisaGay Hamilton, an African-American actor who met Richards on the movie set of Beloved, was fascinated with Richards’ poetry, her struggle as an actor, and the influence she had as an African-American activist.
Hamilton’s film, Beah: A Black Woman Speaks, is intelligently titled after Richard’s outstanding poem, A Black Woman Speaks. Richards performed the poem at the American People’s Peace Conference in Chicago in the summer of 1951 in front of an audience that included W.E.B DuBois and Paul Robeson (Pelak, 2014, 190). The poem demonstrates the struggle of African Americans, and their endurance of hundreds of years of slavery and decades of racial oppression. Meanwhile, the film portrays Richards’ experience as an actor whose race and gender often put her in the margins of great theatrical success.
The film itself is a form of poetry, and it perfectly mirrors Richards’ poem. It begins with Richards’ account of her father and his preservation of a Black identity while touching upon the African-American struggle through themes of discrimination, racial classification (Colored/Black/Negroes) and the history of the African diaspora. Moreover, the film also touches upon the theme of remembrance, particularly when Richards’ said “when we came here from the sea…”, which presents the audience with a historical background of how their identity was shaped. The same themes exist in Richards’ poem, which deconstructs the experience of Black women in America and explains “the historical connections between the two interdependent racial/gender constructions” (Wannamaker, 2004).
Cynthia Fabrizio Pelak, author of Race, Gender, and Class, describes the film as “a long overdue project that devotes attention to Richards’ early activism and writing, positioning her as a figure that, in so many ways, can be read as anticipating multiracial feminist theorizing of the late twentieth century,” (Pelak, 2014, 191). The film features several clips in which Richards is shown reciting a speech, or a line from a movie she is in, or even a section of her poetry, which could be a reflection of the race/gender dynamic in the United States and throughout Richards’ life.
Richards’ other poem, Wanna Bet? brings a different perspective into this film. While A Black Woman Speaks embodies the notion of whiteness, white womanhood and the racial struggle of Black people in America, Wanna Bet? is presented as a performance that challenges those who undermined Richards’ talent as an actor, particularly white men in Hollywood. This is because in the early years of her career, Richards’ was primarily cast as a housemaid, and some saw that as the only role fit for an African American woman, even though she had an immense talent that needed to be recognized.
Through Hamilton’s film, the audience is able to witness the power that Richards’ hold as an artist and performer. The significance that her poetry holds is a great example of that power. At some point, Beah’s poetry was seen as a political tool that could overthrow the government and that is evident in the number of people she influenced. This shows the resonance and impacts her race, gender, and words had.
