Who Is Boyue?

Boyue is not a household name when it comes to eReaders, not least because neither you nor I can pronounce it properly, but also because until recently, it was mostly an OEM manufacturer. That means it made the eReaders that were then branded by other companies. But why go to a middle man when you can go direct?

The Boyue Likebook P78 is its newest model, and the successor to the Likebook Mars, which we've previously recommended.

Likebook P78 Hardware

Measuring a mere 8mm thick, and weighing in at 267g, the Likebook P78 comes in any color you want, as long as that color is dark blue.

Charging and OTG features are provided by the USB-C port on the bottom edge. The power button is on the top right; while you'll also find volume controls for the built-in speakers on the right-hand side.

Why does it have speakers? The Boyue reader app features voice synthesis, for those moments when reading becomes too much effort. Simply pull up the menu, tap the read button, and it'll begin. The voice is understandable but robotic, and nowhere near the quality of Google Assistant or Alexa. I personally couldn't tolerate this for long, but the other alternative is of course to download your favorite audiobook, and just listen to it being read by a professional.

32GB of onboard storage should be plenty for a collection of even the heaviest PDFs, but if you do need more, there's a micro-SD tray on the right-hand side. However, you will need to use the included metal poker tool to remove the tray; it's not quite as easy to slot in as I'd like, but you shouldn't need to do this often.

The design is otherwise not noteworthy, but as they say: you shouldn't judge an eBook by its cover.

Optionally, you can purchase a protective case. This features a semi-rigid back, and the cover supports auto-sleep and wake feature, extending battery life even further.

Internally, the device runs a quad-core 1.4Ghz CPU, backed up by a meager 2GB RAM. You're not buying an eReader for its stunning CPU performance of course, but a reasonably good chipset does help to keep page turns snappy.

Getting Books on to The P78

Out of the box, you have quite a few options for getting books onto the Likebook P78.

The first is to use a micro-SD card. If you're upgrading from another eBook reader and already have a library of content stored there, this is probably the easiest method.

Second, if you're connected to a home Wi-Fi network, you can use the built Wi-Fi Transfer App. This only works from desktop or Android smartphones, not iOS, but seemed to be reliable during testing. Open the app, type the specified IP into your browser, then select and upload files.

Third, you can use the USB-C cable. This is by far the fastest and easiest way to get books onto the device, and the method I found myself using the most from Mac OS with the Android File Transfer utility.

Finally, with full Google Play access, you also have a store full of cloud storage providers and other file sync applications, should you already have a favorite method.

In short, you'll have no issues whatsoever getting any of your content onto the Like P78, DRM-free, and from any source.

It's All About the Screen

Perhaps one of the biggest selling points of the Likebook P78 is the high resolution on a 7.8" display, resulting in 300DPI, the highest pixel density eInk Carta panel you can get. This results in a crisper, more enjoyable, and paper-like reading experience for every type of static media you might consume on it.

While 7.8-inches is the perfect size for novels, I did find it a little small for most PDFs. That said, the auto-crop feature ensures there's no screen wasted on margins, and the text reflow works wonders too.

For bedtime reading and other dark environments, it also features a dimmable cold and warm white LED front light. Activating the default night mode is as simple as pulling down from the top, and long holding on the bulb icon.

Alternatively, press once for more presets and sliders. Unlike other electronic screens, which tend to burn your eyes at night even on the lowest of brightness settings, I experienced no discomfort from the front-lit night mode.

The choice of warm or cold light is nice to have, though it's worth noting that the myth of blue light stopping you from sleeping has been thoroughly disproven.

Shockingly, there are many factors that affect your ability to sleep, none of which are the color of light your devices are emitting. Still, if you believe in that particular placebo, you'll be delighted to know you can have a very dim warm light to read by in the dark.

A2-Mode

Some apps won't run comfortably with the standard eInk display method; for those, you can enable A2-mode simply by pulling down the settings screen. This increases the refresh rate, but at the cost of resolution and contrast.

While access to the Google Play store means you can theoretically install anything, you shouldn't. Even with A2 mode active, I found a simple word game that involved dragging my finger over letters to be a little frustrating, and faster touch movements just missed letters out. It requires you to adjust your use of a touchscreen to be slow and methodical. Apps that need only single touch events should work better.

Battery Life

It's difficult to objectively evaluate the battery life of an eInk device during our standard testing period of two weeks. But suffice to say, I haven't charged it yet, despite daily use and app testing. While I could leave a YouTube video running and tell you that it lasted however many hours, I don't think that's a fair way to evaluate an eReader. The beauty of eInk is that it only uses power to update the display. The upshot is that when used as intended, battery life will not be a concern.

Featuring a 3200mAh battery, which is huge compared to similarly-sized eReaders, Boyue claims a 5-week standby time for the P78, and I've found no reason to doubt that.

Of course, you'll get the best battery life if you disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and only use the Likebook P78 to read books. Games, videos, audiobooks etc will all drastically reduce the battery life.

What's Wrong With a Tablet or Phone?

You might think that in a world of ubiquitous technology at our fingertips, the market for eReaders has died out. Quite the opposite. I'm a big fan of my iPad, but for reading at night, the lowest screen brightness is still eye-wateringly bright. And for daytime use, it's pretty much useless in direct sunlight. And there's the notifications, the temptation to check Reddit, deal with those emails, or any of the other million activities that can distract you.

That's why I've been looking for an eReader: not to replace a traditional tablet, but to compliment it.

Is This The 2021 eReader for You?

Running a full Android system underneath blows the doors wide open to apps and content you simply couldn't get on other eBook readers. You won't be restricted to DRMed content, and it's incredibly easy to add your own PDFs, comics, and ePubs that you've sourced from elsewhere—as well as install your favorite reader app.

The default Boyue Reader is surprisingly competent though, so you may not even need to install other reader apps. The actual reading experience is snappy, even with image-laden PDFs. And that high-resolution screen means any media looks gorgeous.

While Google Play isn't enabled out of the box, updating then enabling the Google Framework isn't hard, but there's no guarantee this will continue to work in the future.

But the trade-off to that open system is a generally sluggish UI elsewhere, and an older version of Android (8.1) may open you up to security risks. Android simply isn't designed for eInk screens (though some reader apps do actually include an option to optimize for them).

Browsing the web is just about tolerable, but I'd recommend saving articles you want to read into an app like Pocket instead to remove most of the guff.

Very simple word games can be played in A2-mode, but other than that, don't buy the Likebook P78 because you want a smooth Android experience that'll run anything you throw at it. It won't. Unless it's a lightweight app that doesn't need more than a few frames a second, don't bother.

Finally, although the default reader app now natively supports CBZ/CBR format comic books, I ran into a few compatibility issues, and even when it does work, you're still trying to read a large format comic on a small black and white screen. For anything outside of comic strips like Calvin and Hobbes, the comic reading experience is subpar.

If you're looking for a bare-bones eBook reader with a stunningly good screen that won't lock you into a particular system, the Boyue Likebook P78 is definitely a top contender. With the prospect of summer holidays being canceled again, now is a great time to rediscover the lost art of reading (if you haven't already during the past year of lockdowns), and the Likebook P78 is a great way to do it.

Let's look at AWS S3. S3 is an easy-to-use, scalable, and cheap storage service from Amazon. You can use S3 to store any amount of data for a wide range of use cases.

Static website hosting, data archival, and software delivery are a few general scenarios where S3 would be a perfect tool.

You can easily push and pull data with S3 using the AWS SDK. S3 also supports a number of popular programming languages, so you can use your existing stack and integrate S3 pretty easily.

AWS Console

S3 also offers a great user interface via the AWS console. You can use it to view the data pushed to S3 along with additional options such as security and version control.

Buckets

In S3, files are stored in buckets. Buckets are similar to folders on your computer.

Every bucket has its own unique name which can be used only once. For example, if there is a bucket called “freecodecamp”, neither you nor anyone else can re-use the same bucket name.

This is useful to uniquely identify resources and for static website hosting with domain names.

There are no limits on the number of files you can store in a bucket. Buckets also provide additional features such as version control and policies.

You can also use different buckets for a single application. For example, an app that stores medical records can use two buckets: one for private customer data and another public bucket that contains whitepapers.

To be used properly I would have to share the 4GB data set, or you'd have to extract the whole game data out yourself. Not to mention steps 2 and 3 of the process above are nothing but two seperate C# .net command line applications with absolutely no error handling, documentation or guides. Maybe one day I can get it in a usable state to share - for now though I'm completely happy to have the program spit out maps for you, if you would like a custom map.More Junk? - Mapping items for their junk contents is a fair bit trickier than just simple items. Especially because there can be overlap. There is significant work required to map all junk items. For now, I've just mapped Screws and Ballistic Fiber, since I reckoned they were the most desirable and couldn't really be found elsewhere. However if there is strong demand for more junk items, it's something I can certainly look into.Interiors cells (inside buildings) are not mapped - we have no maps of them anyway so there's no reference points. Additionally height is not a factor - for example it may look like there's lots of loot at the Garrahan Estates - this is because the data points are top down and represent all floors at once.Image quality: I have been made aware that on some mobile devices the maps are coming out absolute puke quality. I can assure you they should not be doing that and that's not what I uploaded to imgur. It may be several reasons such as low system memory, downloading over mobile network or just your reddit/imgur/browser client putting caps on image resolutions. It's also possible that your mobile may be taking years to download the image, and you're getting that while it waits. I can suggest primarily using these on desktop. Failing that, try to load only one image and not the entire album. Some users have noted that "requesting desktop site" will resolve this. I can attest that 'Reddit Is Fun' for Android doesn't seem to have this issue.Credits & Thanks/u/wully616 and his original web-based map which mine are heavily inspired from. Week 7: Digital citizenship 3: Trolling and social media conflict

This was the week that we had to present our Team presentation with the explanations and key findings. It was great to work with these team of people especially we all had different backgrounds and different perspectives. I have copied and pasted our script in this blog and also provided the references. 

I thought the discussion and questions asked was very well resourced. It is a tough gig for many parents, educators and other service providers alike and many laws require new framework and include Social Media bullying and trolling.

So while the platforms that social media provide can be exploited by bullies to assist them in their hostile endeavours, it is more healthy to focus on what can be done to change their attitude, so that their patterns of regular victimisation can be curtailed both online and in the schoolyard.

First of all, what is bullying?  It can be defined as “systematic abuse of power in interpersonal relationships” (Rigby 2008).  Kwan and Skoric expand on this definition, by stating that there is a clear and present power differential between the two parties involved, with the perpetrator being fully aware of their ascendancy and using it to harm the victim, while the victim feels despair and persecution (2013, pp. 17).  It is also ongoing, and is described as “prolonged mistreatment by a person who harbours malicious intentions…” (Hinduja & Patching 2007, pp. 90).

When does it occur?  Research has found that bullying happens usually when there is an audience present (Rigby 2008), so if this is the case, then social networking sites such as Facebook provide a grand, vast audience - often much larger than a few people gathered around in the playground.

Is cyber bullying worse than face-to-face bullying?  While the obvious physical element has been removed, cyber bullying still has lasting effects on its victims.  It can have a unique longevity attached to it that most real-world bullying interactions do not have.  In some cases, the perpetrator of bullying may stop, but because of the social networking site’s capacity to re-transmit information, the humiliation can be extended for the victim for quite some time afterward.  For example, a bully may share a picture that somehow embarrasses its target, and then others may continue to share it, furthering the suffering for the initial victim (Kwan & Skoric 2013).  

This also feeds into another point, that the audience can be much larger, and much more public.  danah boyd points to the case of ‘the star wars kid’ - a young, awkward teenager’s private video shared initially by a classmate which has now been viewed over 32 million (!) times on youtube (boyd 2014).  This simple act of uploading something to the internet to have a laugh at someone else’s expense came at significant personal cost to the teenager in the video (boyd 2014).  Algorithms on social media are constructed to further promote content that is already being gladly consumed, so once something is popular, it is very difficult to de-popularise.  (I feel really bad for laughing at that star wars kid video now).

Are social networks responsible for the soaring amount of cases of cyberbullying?  According to boyd, no.  She states that “new forms of drama find a home through social media” but “teen’s behaviours have not significantly changed” (2014, pp. 152).  She recommends that the visibility that these social networks provide is an opportunity for others to help the victims of bullying, to assist them in times of anguish (2014).  

In this day and age, we communicate with each other through different platforms rather than by phone or face to face. We communicate by electronic mail, we participate in Social Media platforms with the likes of Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram and numerous more. Our children often referred to as Millennials don’t know a time before the mobile phone, Internet, Email and Social Media. As a society we have to participate and being leaders in Digital Citizenship, Digital Citizenship is referred to as ethical behaviour in online environments and takes aim at problematic or aberrant forms of participation. With the rise of social media, parents and citizens alike have grave concerns about “Cyberbullying”. Cyberbullying is referred to as the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. By definition, it occurs among young people. Kidshealth 2016

Even though, the data from online bullying behaviours suggests differently, the hypotheses amongst parents, media and others is that social media drastically accelerates bullying. An assumption that is not always right as it is hard sometimes to portray the teen-suicide in isolation, the problem is that most cases are very complex and is potentially hard to prove that Social Media is amplifying that. Boyd 2014

Karyn Healy, Program Coordinator (Psychologist), Resilience Triple P program Parenting and Family Support Centre from the University of Queensland 2016, shares the same insight, that bullying is one of the greatest concerns for parents. However, she states that the face-to-face bullying is still a lot more common than cyberbullying. Statistics show that one in five 14 to 15 years olds (21%) have been subject to cyberbullying which is up 4% from 8 to 9 year olds. With Cyberbullying meaning that the bullies post intimidating messages or share embarrassing images via Social Media platforms. Healy 2016

Contrary to the above statement, in a recent case, on the 3rd of December 2016, 18-year-old Brandy Vela took her own life just a few days ago.  The tragedy occurred in Texas, USA which has been labelled cyberbullying because the bullies have been tormenting Brandy Vela for years for her weight but also set up fake social media accounts under her identity. Question: Does Social Media amplify (cyber) bullying?

Healy also indicates, the people that are getting cyberbullied are also getting bullied in real life. The highest rate of (cyber) bullying is the kids that are making the transition from primary to high school, kids that spend a lot of time online, sharing passwords with others and also using social media to bully others. Healy 2016

“According to a Pew survey conducted during 2014 and 2015, 94 percent of teens who go online using a mobile device do so daily. Teens use multiple social platforms. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are the most popular, and 71 percent of teens say they use more than one social media site”. Office of Adolescent Health 2016

Social Media can be a resource and a risk to our young people, it is wise for parents to set up a strategy together with their children to deal with cyber-bullying or online aggression.

For many years, conversations and arguments around Government regulation of Online Trolling and Cyber Bullying has presented a debate between protecting Human Rights and Restricting Free Speech. Proponents of increased regulation argue that people should be prosecuted in the same way online as they would in the real world - not hide behind a wall of online anonymity, whilst those arguing against increased regulation argue that regulation threatens the democratic right to free speech.

Existing Media Legislation

The Australian Communication And Media Authority’s ‘Broken Concepts’ report (2013) outlined the limitations of existing media legislation, including the previously distinct definitions of broadcasting methods (radio, television, and telephone) becoming blurred by new online delivery systems. Existing legislation does not recognize Social Networking applications for voice communication, for example.

Social Media Ombudsman

In the lead-up to the 2013 Federal Election, current Independent Senator Nick Xenephon implored Political Leaders to introduce a Social Media Ombudsman, believing it to be a simple matter of protecting freedom of speech. (Xenephon 2013)

“So many social media users in this country feel powerless to protect themselves from abuse, and it’s about time that stopped.”

“A Social Media Ombudsman would be the best way of dealing with it, due to the myriad of platforms and systems that abound.”

“All Australians should be able to express themselves online without the fear of copping abuse.”

In 2014, the Federal and State governments combined to introduce an online reporting system to help the Australian public to report Cyber-crime called ACORN (Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network) (Acorn 2014). However, reporting of trolling and online abuse still reports within existing media legislation.

However, a Social Media Ombudsman for non-criminal activities online has not been introduced.

Children’s E-safety Commissioner

In 2015 the Australian Federal Government introduced the Children's E-safety Commissioner to educate young Australians to have safe, positive experiences online, whilst enforcing the takedown of serious threats, intimidation, harassment and embarrassment targeted at children.

The commissioner provides online safety education for Australian children and young people, a complaints service for young Australians who experience serious cyber bullying, and addresses illegal online content through the Online Content Scheme. (Doran 2015)

What’s happening overseas?

In 2016, updated guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales gave prosecutors the right to prosecute people found to be “grossly harassing” others online just as they would if the harassment occurred offline, including creating derogatory hash tags, doctored images, and inciting people to harass others. However, Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Sanders was careful to stress that it did not mean they could prosecute free speech. (BBC UK 2016)

New Zealand also passed the Harmful Digital Communications Act (2015) under which INternet Trolls found guilty of using threatening, intimidating or offensive language online could be fined or imprisoned (Patane 2015)

If you are grossly abusive to people, if you are bullying or harassing people online, then we will prosecute in the same way as if you did it offline."
