PROJECT TAPON (Training and Action of People ON Solid Waste Management): UTILIZING USED COOKING OIL AS A SOURCE OF RAW MATERIAL FOR AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD
WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ALL ABOUT?
Project TAPON or Project Training and Action of People ON Solid Waste Management is service-learning project developed within the 3rd Quarter of 2022 based on the studies of MEDHIATIKA, N. L. (2021) particularly on her push to advocate soap making out of used oil in social media in order to promote the concept of “ecoprenurship”. It particularly aimed to provide training that would activate the community in managing their solid waste, create a solution that would capitalize on waste as a raw material that can be produced by the beneficiaries either for everyday use or for commercial sale and assess the viability of the future conduct of similar training to other areas of Roxas, Palawan.
The Baranggay 3 of Poblacion, Roxas, Palawan was selected as the target community of this service-learning project as per recommendation of Palawan State University-Roxas Campus Extension Office, one of the partners of this project. The community has a strong number of women and single parents’ group which was specifically selected by the Baranggay to be beneficiary of the said service-learning project.
The author also talked to other partners such as the Junior Chamber International- Roxas Casuy Chapter which pledged eight (8) soap making kits that was distributed to selected participants as a starting capital in their soap making venture, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) which coordinated with the author as they want to have the said project as an avenue to talk on their Solid Waste Management campaign, on PSU-Roxas BSBA Department that shared their expertise thru Miss Michelle Arizala, a Faculty Member that talked on the basic costing tips and on PSU-Roxas NSTP-CWTS Component for their assistance on the conduct of the said project.
The service-learning project was conducted last December 9, 2022 at the Covered Court of Baranggay 3, Poblacion, Roxas, Palawan with the help of the project partners. It had 30 participants from the women’s and solo parents’ group of Brgy. 3 and witnessed by other members of the Baranggay 3 who became interested in the concept of converting used cooking oil into soap. An evaluation was conducted at the end of the training which resulted positively as the participants find the training experience useful and mostly liked the concept of training them to convert used oil into soap, the participants wished to know more on how to properly make soap out of used oil, the participants sees that the training changed their perspective in managing their waste and the participants are interested to be trained on other training related to solid waste management and utilizing other wastes as a raw material.
WHY GO WITH THIS PROJECT?
It is undeniable that human beings produce waste as a by-product of what they do in their everyday lives. However, the management of this waste material that we produce is a perennial problem and causes damage to our environment and to our society. Society calls for waste reduction, recycling, and maximization of the usage of a material we possess. Yet, few of us consider the recovery of the materials we have wasted.
According to Park (2009), many Filipinos favor fried food and frying food takes a lot of cooking oil. After frying food, many Filipinos in the Philippines pour wasted cooking oil down the drain or into the rivers. She added that oil is not only harmful to human health but is also extremely dangerous for the environment when it is discharged into sewage systems or waterways. This is supported by the results of the study of Balaria (2021) which surveyed the waste management practices of restaurants and eateries which resulted in having the surveyed establishments clogging it to the sewers that go directly to the rivers.
Park (2009) suggests that there is a potential in turning used cooking oil into soap and making it a source of livelihood as the raw materials making it accessible within the community. The article proposed that used cooking oil can be reused as a raw material for biodiesel production and as an ingredient for soap, which can contribute to reducing environmental pollution. Medhiatika (2021) offers the same idea as a solution which is related to the concept of “ecopreneurship”, which involves using innovation to achieve sustainable growth by exploiting market opportunities. She suggests that ecopreneurs can play a key role in promoting the reuse of used cooking oil by creating businesses that collect and recycle it, thus contributing to long-term sustainability. Additionally, her study highlights the need for collaboration between ecopreneurs, consumers, and producers to achieve this goal.
However, Park (2009) suggests that Filipinos does not know that they can recycle used cooking oil into soap and should be taught to the community. This is supported by the findings of Balaria, et.al. (2021) mentioning that majority the restaurants they surveyed are not aware on how to dispose of properly the liquid wastes. With this, there is a gap on how to address the problem on waste used cooking oil.
Seeing the vast potential of used cooking oil as an alternative source of raw material for a livelihood project of a community, capitalizing on used cooking oil should be considered by the community. Yet, one of the challenges on this move is the awareness of people on the other uses of used cooking oil since most households end up dumping their used cooking oil in their drainage.
In order for this to happen, a service-learning project was done by the author to address the said challenge.
KEY FINDINGS OF THIS PROJECT
Within the evaluation conducted within the 30 participants, the following findings were observed.
1) The participants find the training experience useful and mostly liked the concept of training them to convert used oil into soap. Most participants strongly agree that they find the training experience they had useful for them. They mostly liked the idea of training them to convert their used cooking oil into soap as they find it to be economical and an idea that would help save the environment at the same time.
2) The participants wished to know more on how to properly make soap out of used oil. The participants mostly commented the idea of how to properly make soap out of used oil when they are asked what part of the said training they wished to be improved. They also pointed out that the limited time given on the said training made them wish to know more on how to properly make soap out of used oil.
3) The participants sees that the training changed their perspective in managing their waste. The participants mentioned that the training conducted made them gain a new perspective on how to manage their waste at home. They also stated that they are now rethinking to research more if the waste they going to throw out will have something of value before totally throwing it out.
4) They are interested to be trained on other training related to solid waste management and utilizing other wastes as a raw material. The participants wants to be trained more on how to convert their other wastes at home to other materials they can utilize and they are deeply interested on the concept of solid waste management as they see it as a practically to help them lessen their expenses as what demonstrated by the training on how to convert used oil into soap.
FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
1) The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) should strengthen further their campaign on solid waste management and not limiting it on Information and Education Campaigns but also including similar training that would help utilize solid waste into something useful as the community finds such training more useful to them.
2) Similar Trainings that involving livelihood project should be given more time and emphasis by other project implementer as most people are highly interested on training that they see valuable to them. Such trainings should be also implemented to other areas for further dissemination.
3) Other extension/project implementers should consider giving extension programs that is related to utilization of solid waste into raw materials for other purpose as people find these concepts practical and more useful.

Where Wind Soothes - Crypt (Sehun, pt. 9) [Chronicles of the Wolf series]
I love you guys. Sorry for being gone for so long.
I hope this will help <3. I’ll start replying to all of your answers tomorrow <3
If you need to refresh your memory, and I know you do, read this!
Enjoy!
-
The mountains seemed even more ominous as you neared them, and you knew why it seemed that way to you. It was most probably a combination of all things- the sky was overcast, sun only slightly visible through the thick layer of grey; an omnipresent and yet still powerless deity, whose power would not reach where you were about to wander. The area surrounding the crypts of the ancient seemed match the atmosphere of a final resting place of dozens of warriors. The ground was hard and cold, and only the harshest and sturdiest of flora survived here, a clear sign for anyone and everyone, that this was not a place for the living.
All these thoughts came racing through your veins and down your legs, making it seem like iron settled around your ankles, and you huddled into yourself for security and the slightest, maddest of thoughts, that maybe if you cowered into yourself far enough, you would magically slip away from the situation that you found yourself in, and would be able to reappear back in your cozy and most importantly, safe house, far away from any wolves or deathbells or walking dead.
Bora didn't seem to be as affected by your adventure, and in the back of your mind, you knew you couldn't compare yourself to a person whose calling was killing of supernatural beasts. And yet you couldn't help yourself but be jealous of the easy stride she kept up, even though you saw the numerous daggers strapped to both of her thighs and the small bow flung across her back. In this moment, you didn't want to be a healer anymore. You wanted to become Bora, tall and strong and fearless, and selfless, so, so selfless, as she was putting herself in imminent danger to provide materials for a medicine that is so ancient, there is no knowing if it going to help or not.
Sehun kept silent on the road. You didn't know if it was purely the jealousy seeping through him that prevented him from having a civil conversation with you, or it was the stress. Maybe it was a bit of both, and it made you uneasy as well. Even if he didn't talk to you, he made it his point to stay near you, just an arm's reach away in case you tripped over a stray root while you were busy mapping your surroundings (however, you did think that there were some moments when the guiding hand on the small of your back was absolutely unnecessary, and the younger wolf was just yearning for touch. You let it slide, because the warmth of his hand made your fried nerves cool down as well).
You bypassed the main entrance to the crypt, a tall door with multiple locks strewn over the majestic wood as a clear sign that it was unwise to even attempt to disturb the dead. Many have tried, evident by the numerous slashes not only against the door but on the cobbled stones leading up to the entrances as well- swords, axes and arrows of thieves or just adventurers bored by the dangerous woods and abandoned villages, looking for treasure. Looking for fame. And after the fourth time the capital had sent the battle monks to contain hordes of decaying flesh wielding their old weapons as if they were part of their limb, the crypts were sealed off, guarded by protective wards which would make the intruders forget what they were attempting to do and send them off wandering into the wilderness, regaining their senses once they were far away.
Bora's sure steps leading all of you up the side of the mountain had you chuckling under your breath. "How often have you gone here, Bora?" you couldn't keep in the question, and the former captain turned to look at you over her shoulder, a slight smirk playing along her features. "I have a friend or two who recommended some weak spots in the chambers further in the crypts."
"I hope these friends aren't waiting somewhere in the shrubbery for you and little medic over here to slide away into a crypt to ambush us," Baekhyun hissed, making sure his suspicious voice was accompanied by a fake-enough swipe of the perimeter that it couldn't have been interpreted in a different way than a joke. "I'm sure that if Bora wanted us to be decorations of Wolfsguard barracks' walls, she would've lured us somewhere closer to the headquarters." Sehun piped in, offering you a hand once you were climbing higher on the rocks.
"Maybe it's something they like to do in their free time. Find out who makes a more fun hunger games for the guards."
"It's here." the playful speculations (only for the two participating wolves, Tao's shoulders tensed since the first mention of his mate betraying their pack) died down immediately when Bora knelt over a pile of seemingly inconspicuous rubble. Stone after stone disappeared, and an ominous wind moaned from the newly discovered crypt entrance, heavy with the stench of stale moss and rot. You came to appreciate your medical background, as the smell was something horrible to the untrained nose, as was evident from the way the wolves' grimaced and turned away, trying to guard their heightened senses.
The mouth to the crypt had a diameter just slightly big enough for you and Bora to squeeze through, but even as the former Wolfsguard asked Baekhyun to shine a bit of light into the first hall of the crypt, it was evident that there was no possible way either of the wolves could follow you. Bora turned to you with a tight smile.
"I know the layout of the crypt. We scour one, maybe two of the main halls, and that's it. They are big enough, and if the plant we're looking for is not there, it won't be anywhere else in the crypt." Squinting up at the sky, she did the math in her head.
"We have about three hours in the cave. Then we need to head back to camp, so we won't get caught in the dark out here. Check through your bag to make sure you have everything, and we can go."
The last command made it real, and you could feel your knees buckle slightly at the idea of having to go inside. However, you kept your deserter's thoughts to yourself, as you knew that if you would show any type of uncertainty infront of the wolf, Sehun would press the group to abort mission and return to camp. You have seen his injuries. You saw the way it crippled him from fully enjoying his time with the pack, hell, the way it robbed him of a good night's sleep or a pleasant meal. And with every wince during dinner time or on trail, you also saw Bora's eyes flicker with guilt. You knew that if you backed out of the plan, she would venture inside alone, even if it meant trying to find a long lost herb only by frayed drawing. She knew that apologies by words would not mean anything, she would press on, more ferocious in scouting the territory, in preparing the maps, in sharpening her arrows and daggers.
One of those weapons was currently hanging on your hip, surprisingly light for the metallic appearance of it. "Elven," Bora quipped when she saw your expression. "Very light but still able to deal a lot of damage."
Along with the dagger, you had a backpack slung over your shoulder, and in it were rough sketches of the plant you were looking for. It was a petite plant, reaching no more than over your ankles, all delicate vines and small, round leaves with gentle petals and a reportedly sweet odor. If the colors of the petals were any different, it would be an ideal plant to have in pots under your window, or strung together in a cute bouquet for a first date, be it not that the flower itself had the color of decaying flesh and the inner veins were fanning out in an ominous black, like the skin of a corpse left unattended for far too long. They were said to recieve this discoloration from their primary source of nutrients - they peeked out from half open coffins in murky crypts, or on battlefields where none had survived to bring the information to their allies.
As you checked the sketch again, your hands began to shake. The calming breath you took (four seconds breathe in, seven seconds hold, eight seconds out) had no effect, and with an annoyed sigh you stuffed the sketch back in the satchel, pulling on the strings to close it. The paper was so old that you could only wish that the drawing was right. What if you had fallen for one of those books written only to scare people away from the woods and crypts? Who in their right mind would name a flower Deathbell, anyways?
It was then that two warm palms cupped your face, making you flinch away from the touch with a quiet squeak. You looked up at Sehun in bewilderment, whose face was clouded in worry.
"You don't have to do this." he told you, confirming all the suspitions you had before. Putting on your most convincing smile, you shook your head (or at least tried...it was hard to do so while it was held delicately in someone's grasp), patting the back of his hand reassuringly.
"This will help you, Sehunnie. It's going to be okay."
"It's not okay if you're in an enclosed space somewhere I can't reach you. There must be some other cure."
"But what if there isn't? What if this is the only way to make you feel better?" Sehun stopped to think his answer over, but you didn't give him the chance to say something stupid.
"And don't you dare say you don't need it. Your pack has wasted precious supplies if we don't at least try to get them." It was your turn to step closer to the wolf, whose glance was directed at the dirt on your shoes. Running a hand through his hair, you cupped his chin and gently lifted it up so he was looking at you. His worry for you was extremely endearing, and you reached up on the tips of your toes to press a small kiss against his nose.
"We will be fine. I promise." Before you had the chance to step away, Sehun was pressing his forehead against yours with a deep sigh, his hands slipping down to your throat, sliding down your arms. As his fingers entwined with yours, he slowly guided your hands to wrap around his waist, before he cupped your face again, being so close to you that you felt the breath from his lips fall against yours.
"The moment you so much as hear something moving in the crypts, you get out. Deathbell, no deathbell. I'm okay with being like this if it means that you're okay." the confession had silenced whatever cooing reassurances you had ready for the young wolf, because the amount of fire and passion in his eyes almost knocked you to your knees. The only thing you were able to do was surge up on your toes once more to press a deep kiss against his lips, hoping that it will convey all that you wanted to say.
I'm doing this for you. I'll be careful. I will succeed.
Wait for me out here.
Sehun moved away from you with extreme difficulty, his wolf howling at him to keep you in his arms, away from harm, away from the place you were about to crawl into that reeked of danger and death. He was rooted on the spot when Baekhyun light the girls' torches with an inextinguishable light.
Bora went first, agile as a feline as she slipped through the hole and landed on the crypt's floor with a mute thud. The height wasn't too bad, the only concerning thing for you was that you had to slip your satchel from your back to be able to get through the entrance and into the dungeon. As much as you tried to copy Bora's movements, they fell short and you landed with a much louder thud than the leader of the Wolfsguard, and for a heart clenching second, the both of you stood as motionless as the dead, ears poised to catch the slightest sound that you had woken what should never rise again.
As Bora gave the silent nod of her head, you turned one last time to look up at the entrance, where Sehun was peeking down at you with a mixture of annoyance, worry and fear.
It was the last look you saw on him before you took a quiet, deep breath, and stepped into the land which belonged to the dead.
The first thing you were surprised to see were the slight glimmers of light far in the crypt. Despite such heavy locks adorning the door, you figured there must be a priest who comes every now and then to check the grounds for any possible unrest. Your stomach still felt weak as you forced yourself to turn away from the lit corridor and inspect the hall you were in at the moment.
The hall that you dropped into was longer than you had thought, and what you had crawled through was a hole in one of the empty resting places reserved for the bodies. Looking around, the bodies were placed in cabinet-style stone constructions, lining both the walls of the hall you were currently in, as well as functioning as separators for different family clans.
Not every body was in a coffin, to your dismay. Quite the contrary, coffins were rare in the room you were currently scanning, making your heart drop. Most of the bodies rested on stone cold tablets, arms crossed on the chest. Even though most have been dead for many years, there were still corpses which clung to their weapons from their living days, as if they were ready to spring up and resume whatever battle had bested them before.
Pressing a cloth to your mouth and nose to guard it from the stench clinging to this place as well as acting as a hopefully effective enough prevention from sneezing at the unknown scents and large amount of dust, you took a small, uncertain step to the closest coffin to you, wedged in between an axe-wielding woman with no arm and a resting ground in which three decapitated heads were stacked neatly in a row. Ignoring the hollow looks in their eyes as best as you could, you brought the torch a bit closer to examine the cracked opening of the coffin.
You knew the chances were extremely low, but yet it didn't stop your stomach from plummeting in disappointment when there were no deathbells present. Fighting the sigh from escaping your lips, you turned to see where Bora had gone. Her torch was on the ground by her feet, hands gripping her bow and arrow, as she glared at the far away corridor light with torches, deep scowl on her face. Swallowing the question you had for her, you decided to sneak over to the next coffin (the clan you were currently inspecting had a total of four coffins to their approximately 30 bodies), trying to focus the most on what was important.
The lid of the other coffin was almost completely slid to the side, revealing the once surely majestic warrior whose hair was now falling out in clumps with the scalp, skin stretched tightly over his face and body. A huge hole hollowed his chest, most definitely the killing blow by something no smaller than a battering ram. However, his broadsword was laying in the coffin next to him, still ready if necessary.
However, no deathbells there either.
A sudden sound echoing in the darkness had you flinching horribly, heart beating erratically. Bora brought her bow up with lighting speed, aimed at the sound's source. It echoed again, a soft howl of the wind from the entrance the crypt now had. It was entirely possible that there were other holes in the crypt, much like the one you used to get in, and with the passage open, it was bound to happen that a few stones would tumble down, creating the scary echo. However, these rational thoughts did not calm your heartbeat, and even though they uprooted you from your petrified stance, it made your step quicker as you inspected another coffin. If your heart could have plummeted more, it would, as your new cache was without the treasure you looked for and the last coffin was still intact and sealed shut.
The main hall you were currently in held the bodies of approximately four clans. The different runes on the sides of the stone slabs indicated the names of the buried and the periods of their demise. If you knew you had more time (and your visit was much safer), you would love to spend ages in these halls, dotting down the nuggets of information that could prove useful. Warriors weren't the only ones who found eternal rest here - with the death of a clan leader, the maids, intelligence and healers were sent to the otherworld as well. You knew it was highly immoral, but if by chance you found a coffin of a healer with their tomes still with them, you would not be above taking it to rediscover cures for diseases that were swallowed up by time, and yet still made a comeback every now and then to wreak havoc.
Bora began moving as well, a soft sway here and there to make sure all the dead stayed that way, her bow and arrow still locked and ready to shoot. Keen eyes scanned the main hall, and yet they always returned to that narrow hallway leading most probably to a different room- crypts were often built with intermingling rooms designed for occasional pilgrims or guards, and so it wouldn't be surprising for you if it was exactly some descendants of the resting clans who took up the responsibility to protect the bones of the elders from grave robbers. Grave robbers like you, you realized with a wry quirk of your lips.
However, the light still made you feel uneasy, rightly so. It is strange to see something that so clearly indicates living presence in a place where everything should have been dead for decades. Trying to push that thought deep back into your mind (and turning around to see that the entrance to the cave is still a straight line and a few long strides away from you), you moved to inspect more of the graves. Bora was still on your left, snooping through the other clan's resting places. You knew that even though the warrior is checking out some of the coffins herself, you wouldn't be able to stop from checking them on your own as well. You wanted to get out of here, as soon as possible.
And your blood froze when from the corner of your eye, you saw a figure standing on your right.
A pained whine left your lips as your legs instinctively jumped away from the unknown character that was standing exactly in the mouth of the hallway that had you feeling uneasy. Your sound alerted Bora, and she was by your side in a moment, arrow already whistling through the air, aimed exactly at the figure's head.
His hand shot out and with a burst of blue energy, it knocked the arrow out of its intended trajectory, making your knees buckle. The person was clad in what most definitely were black robes a long time ago, but the time spent underground tattered the cloth and the dust ingrained itself in the fabric probably indefinitely. His hood was resting on his back, revealing an elderly man with his scalp left bare by his hair falling out in literal clumps. Two linear marks ran down his cheeks in the brownish color of dried blood, sliding down his neck and into the robes.
He tilted his head to the side curiously, crazed eyes bulging out of his skull as he stared at the two of you in extreme interest.
"Living brides? I haven't had those in a while," a voice crinkly as old papyrus cut through the tension of the room, and it was only then that you realized that what you first thought was just dust settling behind the figure were the spirits of two young women, looking both disconnected with whatever was happening to them, but sorrowful at the same time. The necromancer licked his lips, as if that would help the dry chuckle that ripped from his throat.
Necromancers were considered a myth in the capital. After they were banned from the mage's association, they were viciously hunted down for their predatory behavior and more than unconventional preferences. And yet here was one standing before you, and you suddenly wished you never opened the door for the strange party that went searching for you for help.
The wolves waiting outside must have felt the sudden change of ambience, because you heard distressed noises and a hiss of your name echo through the hole. You only had enough time to whimper Sehun's name back before the necromancer was swinging his hand in the direction of the entrance, and as the whole crypt shook, the rocks blocked your escape route. The wall shook at the hits from the other side, but the rocks did not budge. You were stuck.
You heard more whistling through the air as Bora tried her shot once more, only to be dodged by the necromancer, who did not appreciate her attempts at getting an arrow lodged in his eyes. Another swish with his hand had Bora flying into the side of the crypt, a hit tough enough to leave her crumbling on the ground to catch her breath. He frowned, looking over at you with an almost sympathetic look in his eyes.
"Why is your friend being so mean? I will treat you so well. Just ask the girls," he exclaimed, his arm swiping back to the looming spirits hovering weakly in the air. Your eyes filled with tears and with quivering hands, you reached for the dagger that was on your hip in a cutely valiant and yet apparently useless attempt to protect yourself from the menace standing in front of you.
"You do seem to be very docile dear, and I like that in my brides. She, on the other hand," he only flicked his head over to where Bora was already standing with a deep frown on her face, silently evaluating the situation, "needs to learn, that every action has consequences." Spreading both his arms wide, the blue energy that you witnessed moments ago burst through the hall in a blast that had you falling to your knees.
For an excruciating moment, you thought nothing bad happened, and maybe the necromancer was at his energy's end. Your heart lurched forward however, when you noticed another flicker of blue lights in your periphery, and you turned to look just in time as one of the dead warriors was slowly waking back to life, the blue flickering orbs illuminating the space where his eyes used to be.
The tall, lanky body stretched as if they were merely asleep for a very long time, cracking at the joints of their neck and shaking off the lethargy from their rotten flesh. A sudden clash of metal against metal had both you and the warrior jump in surprise. Bora had already engaged one of them, her shortsword looking pitiful against the battleaxe-wielding maiden.
It was surprising to still be able to recognize the deep hatred in a face stripped of all muscles.
"Aim for the heads, ___!" Bora yelled as she pulled a hidden dagger from her pouch and swung with her other arm, promptly dodging the already derelict helmet and striking the undead in the temple. The shieldmaiden stepped back from Bora as if she were confused, before collapsing into a heap of bone and rot and not moving again.
The bodies had a mind of their own. And their main thought was to fight.
With that thought you turned back to the body whose awakening you witnessed just moments ago and dodged a swing of his sword by a hair's breadth. You stumbled back to the ground and kept retreating from the numerous hits the evidently angry body rained down upon you, and in the process the dagger slipped from your clammy hands, cluttering pointlessly to the ground.
This was it, you thought. This was how you're going to die, cursed to become a bride for a deranged individual who preferred the company of aggressive dead.
"The HEAD, ___, get the heads!" Bora told you once more as an arrow swished past your shoulder and struck the incoming warrior in the forehead. In an attempt to escape being squished by the falling body, you rolled to the side, precisely on one of the already awakening warriors.
The shieldmaiden opened her mouth and screeched in insult, and it was an almost automatic response that you lifted the nearby goblet and jammed it into her head numerous times, not even realizing how soft the skull became. It must have been the magic that allowed the necromancer to give the bodies thoughts of their own but made them extremely vulnerable to being destroyed if you knew what you were doing.
You didn't know what you were doing. You were here to collect deathbells, and not to become fertile soil for them.
You stopped once the skull resembled more mush than bone, and you promptly turned over to heave your breakfast onto the ground beside you. Your whole body shook, and you wished Tao was there to stop time because you needed to take a breath, but the dead kept on rising, kept on turning their attention to the object that was moving around in the crypt the most. Bora almost looked as if she were dancing, the graceful movements of her sword slicing through her dead enemies that seemed to be coming in great numbers.
The wall where your entrance was before shook every now and then, trembling under the powerful blows of the three werewolves standing outside, however the necromancer must have fortified the fallen rubble because it did not budge even though you were sure that under normal circumstances the rocks would have been sent flying.
Trying to shake off the sickness that took over your body, you reached out for the mace that was placed right next to one of the still resting bodies. Just as you lifted it, the magical blue hue appeared behind its rotting eyelids, breathing life into the dead flesh. However, this time you were prepared for it and you immediately brought the heavy, jewel-studded head of the mace down onto the face of an ancient warrior, sending him back to timeless eternity. Learning your lesson from last time, you quickly turned away from the wound as to not make yourself sick again and looked over at Bora, who was slowly becoming overwhelmed.
It was a while since Bora's last opponent was something bigger than a fox, and a horde of undead warriors was no doubt a formidable enemy. Even if their movement was sluggish and uncertain (if you had the time, you would ponder in fascination on what made the monsters move, since all the nerves would be the first to rot away and muscles were found scarcely on some of the bodies, the polished bones shining against Baekhyun's torches abandoned on the ground), they seemed to have endless energy, and if Bora didn't hit them in the head, they would keep returning. You could already see some of the wounds on Bora's body- a cut here and there, blood that seemed to be far too fresh to belong to any of the dead bodies.
In a graceful move, Bora sliced off both of her enemy's arms in two swift strikes before kicking the skirmisher in the chest. The body flew back towards you, and you swung the mace just in time to strike the head and put him out of commission. Bora was able to spare you a small smile before returning to fight against the others. Glancing around you quickly, you noticed not all the dead were risen. Maybe not all of them could be risen, for one reason or another, which meant that soon, all the enemies in these halls would be defeated, leaving you with the necromancer alone. The thought fueled you with some hope, and you tripped an unsuspecting skeleton charging at Bora before thoughtlessly stomping on its' head.
The mush of the skeleton stuck to your shoes like sludge. There are other rooms in the crypt. More undead. No escape.
Isn't all your fighting futile? The rubble from the entrance does not budge, and only the one above knows where exactly in the crypt you were right now. Even if the wolves would find a way to open the magically fortified locked entrance, they would no doubt have to fight themselves through hordes of these monsters and numerous of the necromancer's brides before reaching the two of you.
And you were growing tired. And even if she didn't show it, Bora was growing tired as well. Once you killed all of these undead, what then? Face the most probably centuries old necromancer on your own, who is probably raising more undead while you tried to fight off the crawling torso of a body that Bora couldn’t kill perfectly?
Your arms trembled as you brought the mace down once again, and that was when you felt invisible arms wrap around you tight, so tight you were worried that your bones would break like twigs. The air was pushed out of your lungs and the mace you held in your hands clattered to the ground with a loud noise.
The tips of your toes weren't touching the ground anymore, and you were unwillingly turned towards the necromancer, who was holding his hand out, beckoning you to come to him, yellow and rotting teeth grinning at you maliciously. You felt as if you couldn't move, no matter how much you struggled, and in the background, you could faintly hear Bora's scream of your name as she fought more aggressively against the lasting five warriors.
"No, fuck! ___!!" The necromancer was closer now, and the closer he was, the more disgusting and terrifying he seemed.
"You will serve just nicely," he rasped, and you glanced past his shoulder to stare at the two floating spirits behind him, renewing your attempts to wiggle out his binds in whatever way, because oh my god, you're going to end up just like them.
You had a whole life ahead of you. You just found a group you felt like you can belong in. You finally found that spark in your profession that seemed to be long gone and you gave up hope in forever finding again.
Looking so closely at one of the dead brides, you recognized her face as one of the girls who disappeared years ago from the capital. Word was that she escaped from an arranged marriage to be with her lover and the commotion died down after a few months. Seeing her now, forever bound to a madman, face void of any emotion had tears pushing into your eyes.
Bora was still fighting in the back, two undead with large axes keeping her busy, but she still kept glancing over at you, which cost her dearly, as one of the skeletons was able to catch her off-guard and slice into her side. With a surprised grunt, she turned and caught its head with a dagger, making the body crumple down in a bone heap.
"Eyes on me, darling." a sweaty palm gripped your chin roughly and tugged you back to stare into the crazed eyes of the necromancer. He was breathing deeply, whitened tongue darting out to lick at the bottom of his lip every now and then as he assessed you.
"Yes...yes..." he murmured, fingers tucking back the strand of your hair behind your ear. "You will do just nicely."
"Fuck no, __!" The sounds from everywhere were overwhelming. Bora's desperate groan as she no doubt got hit again for being distracted, the whole side of the crypt thudding in powerful blows, the quickened breath of the psychopath in front of you, breath rotten that made your stomach churn.
Is this how you were going to die?
The palms gripping your head heated up, and they soon began to burn at your skin, making your whole head ache as if put through a torturing device. The aching burn slithered down your neck slowly, spreading over your collarbones and sliding down to the tips of your fingers, over your chest and hips. You squirmed in discomfort, the whine slipping past your lips pathetically weak.
"It won't take long, my love. You will be a fine addition, just don't move. It will be all over soon."
The ache traveled past your thighs, wrapping around your legs and knees in a vice, and you almost felt your joints dislocating under the pain. When it reached your toes, your whole body pulsed once, twice, thrice.
Before it re-started its trek up your body, leaving numbness behind.
You couldn't wriggle your toes.
You couldn't move your ankles.
The numbing feeling was moving higher up your body, and with it, it was taking your soul. Your eyes must have revealed their despair, because the necromancer laughed, moving so close your noses touched.
"Why are you so afraid, petal? It doesn't hurt, does it?" You wished it would hurt. Anything would be better than the slow and deliberate, fully conscious feeling of life leaving you.
Everything went silent, and that's how you could almost hear the blood flow in your body still. Your legs hung limply from the hold of the necromancer. You couldn't feel the tips of your fingers anymore.
"P-please don't do this..." you begged, voice quivering so bad it barely came out.
"Just a while longer," the man cooed, tongue licking over the bottom of his lip hungrily. "Just a while longer and your mine."
The bottom of your ribs began to tingle. Will your heart stop when it reaches them?
Your life flashed before your eyes, replacing the ugly murderer in front of you. You saw your cozy home, filled with vials that helped countless people. You saw your friends, laughing carelessly over the latest gossip and every handsome man that passed by your table. You saw Bora and the other mates, smiling at you warmly and welcoming you, a stranger, into their closest of circles.
You saw Sehun. Saw his smile. The way his bottom lip jutted out in a pout when his older brothers messed with him. The crease of his brows when the scar on his back began aching.
You saw how his whole body relaxed under your fingertips, as you cupped his face and stroked your thumb under his eye. The smile that slowly spread when you were the first thing he saw in the morning. His grin when he succeeded in teasing you. The way his lips felt against yours.
And you tipped your head back with the last surge of strength you could muster, snapping it back with as much force as you had.
There was a sickening crunch as your skull connected with the old man's nose.
You dropped to the floor, head banging against the cold stone. Your fingers twitched life back into them.
Swishing sliced through the air, before hitting its juicy target.
And as you looked up, the elven dagger glistened from the necromancer's surprised face. The body slumped back, hitting his brides, who disappeared into thin air.
The wall finally gave, and you heard three voices yelling your and Bora's names, although you heard it as if you were underwater.
And just as your eyes gave to the darkness, you glimpsed it right in front of you.
A deathbell.

Love the positively because it's all we have sometimes. I just have one request could do a howl moving castle mood board for Jaime and Brienne. I love the book and movie think Jaime fits Howl perfectly while Brienne fits Sopie. It would make my day.
Hi anon, sorry it took me a while to get back to you with the awesome suggestion, but since I never watched the movie as a whole (I know, shame on me), I had to do some more research before I could get it done. I hope this helps you stay as positive as I am. :D
The plot bunnies to go along with it look like as follows:
Brienne of Tarth lives an ordinary life, well, howeverordinary a life one can have as one of the few female smiths King’s Landing hasever seen. However, it was her late father’s dying wish that she would continuethe family business in his spirit. When the ongoing war between King’s Landingand Winterfell drove many people out of her father’s company, Brienne foundherself more often working in the forge herself. And so, she became a smith, producing materials for the military as well as finest metalwork she sells toeager customers.
Born ugly and mannish, Brienne resigned herself to herfate long time ago, only ever keeping her long braid as her father always lovedthe look on her, as he said.
Rumors start to spread that the mysterious movingcastle of the sorcerer Jaime was seen around the area of King’s Landing. Thehandsome wizard is rumored to steal the hearts of young, beautiful women, whichis why Brienne gives nothing much on the rumors. He certainly wouldn’t want tosteal her heart!
After hours of labor on a special request, Briennemakes her way to Lady Olenna, who ordered a brooch from her to wear to hergranddaughter’s engagement party. As she makes her way through the city, sheruns into a group of soldiers, and not of the honorable kind like her fatherused to be back in the day. First they address her as a man, and once theyrealize that she is, in fact, a woman, they laugh so hard they nearly toppleover. Brienne wants to brush past them, but they won’t let her. It is duringmoments such as these that she wished she had been born a man, because then shewould be a soldier, too, and could roughen them up without having to fear forconsequences otherwise sure to await her since the soldiers are underprotection of the Queen. Just as they provoke her enough to make her lash out,Brienne suddenly feels a strong hand on her shoulder. A wickedly handsome manbeams at her, acting as though they were a couple, arguing that he’s beenlooking for her everywhere.
Before Brienne knows what’s happening, she comes torealize that the man is no one other than the sorcerer Jaime, who, with the aidof his magic, makes sure that the soldiers get lost fast.
“I didn’t need your help.”
“Which does not hinder you from thanking me for myservices regardless of the fact.”
“Why did you help me?”
“I only rescue maidens.”
Brienne and he are on the verge of getting into anargument when they are suddenly chased by a bunch of shadowy creatures. Theyoung woman is shocked when the wizard just grabs her and flies with her overthe city. Just what is happening? Why does he care about her? Why is he here? What would he want with a woman like her?
But before Brienne can ask any questions, he drops heroff at Olenna’s, telling her that it’s not safe for her anymore. He wishes herfarewell before disappearing without a trace. A very excited Margaery andOlenna welcome Brienne, on their balcony no less, poking her for all kinds ofinformation about the ominous man who must have been the infamous JaimeLannister. Brienne plays it all down, arguing that even if it was him by somewink of fate, he certainly wasn’t there to steal her heart.
No one wants to steal that thing because no one wantsto keep it. She learned that lesson long time ago during a party, after all.
Brienne delivers the brooch and is quick to excuseherself before Olenna and Margaery manage to force her to attend the party. Briennereturns to the shop, deciding she may work on her secret passion, forgingswords, to put her heart at ease. Late at night, someone enters the shop.Brienne is irritated when an elegant woman in a black dress comes inside, demanding her services, all the while complaining about the poor conditions ofthe shop. Politely, the young woman informs her that the shop is closed andthat she will have to return tomorrow to place her order. The older woman doesnot take no for an answer, though, and instead continues to venture throughBrienne’s shop.
Frustration gets the better of her and she curses atthe woman to leave her shop. Infuriated, the woman with short hair walks up toher – and then right through Brienne. She gasps, only now starting tounderstand that this is not an ordinary woman but a witch. However, that shockis shortlived as she soon has to realize that the witch did something to her. With horror Brienne observes as her hands turn wrinkly and her bones start toache. A look into the mirror reveals the horrid truth: she was turned into anold woman!
“That’s what you get for daring to speak like that tothe Witch of the Waste.”
“Witch of the Waste… you invaded my shop! I didn’t doanything! Turn me back! What did you do to me?! Take it back!”
“I can’t take it back. I can only curse not undo it…sorry about that, I suppose. I will be on my way.”
“You can’t just leave me like this!”
But the woman is gone before Brienne can demandanother thing. Brienne is petrified. How is she supposed to keep her father’spromise if she is suddenly of old age? How is she supposed to work the forge? How is any of this possible? Brienne breaks down in tears and falls asleepeventually, only to be roused by Margaery’s voice echoing through her workshop.Brienne hides behind the forge since she doesn’t want to be seen like this.Margaery wants to pick up the diadem she had ordered. Brienne quickly tells herwhere to find it. Margaery is overjoyed at the jewel’s beauty, but Brienne isquick to send her out of the shop, telling her that she must have caught a coldand wouldn’t want the future bride to get sick.
Once the young, beautiful woman is gone to find herluck, Brienne realizes that she cannot stay in King’s Landing. Thus, she packsher things and leaves everything behind – until she found a way to break thewitch’s curse. She travels the outskirts of the city, only to run into a mutebut alive scarecrow. At first she is scared, but Brienne realizes that thedark-clad figure means her no harm and in fact shows her a way through theworld she yet has to get to know.
She is shocked to discover that the scarecrow leadsher to the moving castle the people talked about so much. Brienne enters whenno one answers the door, only to run into a dark-haired boy who can transformhimself at will. He introduces himself as Jaime’s apprentice, Podrick, or Podas he prefers to be called. Brienne also gets to meet a talking flame namedTyrion who is the source of the castle’s magic.
The fire reveals itself as quite clever, sensinginstantly that Brienne is under the influence of a curse, though Tyrion notesthat it will be tough to dispel.
“And can you lift the curse?”
“Only if you make a deal with me. I lift your curseand for that you let me be free.”
“And you are sure you can keep such a promise?”
“I know for a fact that I don’t. I am an evil thing,after all.”
“Well, then I certainly won’t be making any deals withyou.”
“You should, though. Because I always pay my debtsonce they are due. So if you break me free, I shall break the curse for you.”
“What would I have to do?”
“Find out and say aloud the secret behind Jaime andme.”
“You… don’t know?”
“I seem to have forgotten. It is tough to remember thefuture.”
“Remember the future? What?”
“He’s cryptic like that a lot, m’lady.”
“You know what? Fine, deal.”
What does she have to lose, right? Brienne alreadylost everything and that means, in fact, that she has everything to gain.
Though Brienne must say, adapting to this new lifewon’t be easy. The magic castle is truly… magical. Doors may lead just outsidethe countryside she came from one time, but with the twist of a knob, it maylead right into the heart of King’s Landing, only a few miles away from whereher shop is… or used to be. Stranger things keep occurring as people come tothe house again and again, requesting “the Kingslayer” here or “the goldenlion” elsewhere, though always with the same message which they give to Pod,namely that he is to be of “service” to a King here, a Queen there.
Once that show is done, silence starts to spread inthe house, and Brienne dares to venture around and ask some necessaryquestions, such as the sorcery behind the door. Pod tells her that there is onefield painted black on the navigation that only Master Jaime knows to where itleads and that they are forbidden from travelling there.
Brienne busies herself around the house, reckoning shehas to make herself appear useful somehow, starts to clean, surprised to findmany antique weapons around the house, though most are rusty and blunt, something that nearly makes her mad. Who dares to leave such fine weaponry insuch poor condition? Once she is done with the look around the house, Briennefixes up breakfast for the inhabitants, though she is soon dissatisfied withthe poor condition of the stove, too. And if there is one thing she learned asa smith, then it is to keep your fire going. If she can’t fix the weapons, thestove should be within her capacities.
“Leave that alone! I don’t want to labor that hard. Not until you have given me some wine.”
“Since when do fires need wine?”
“I’m a magical flame. I need wine!”
“You need no such thing. You need to focus and getworking. You are complacent, are you not?”
“Pod, make her stop!”
“I don’t think I can, Master Tyrion.”
“Ugh.”
As Brienne is in the middle of sparking up biggerflames in the stove, someone enters, and it is the same man she ran into in thestreets the other day. Shocked, she scrambles to her feet.
“Welcome back, Master Jaime! You got a letter from theQueen. And the Kingslayer got one from the King!”
“How wonderful!” Jaime huffs, rolling his eyes as hewalks inside. He looks at Tyrion in the stove. “Since when do you burn so much? You didn’t even have any wine just yet to fuel the flames.”
“I was forced into action by this lady here. Shebullies me!”
“Not many can do that now. Quite impressive. Who areyou?” he looks at Brienne curiously, obviously not recognizing the woman hehelped out in King’s Landing.
“My name is Brienne. I am… I’m the new maid.”
“Who decided that we needed a maid and that you wouldget the job?”
“… I did. By myself. And you won’t find anyone morehardworking than me, rest assured, Master Jaime.”
“Jaime, just Jaime,” he tells her in a soft voice thatbrings heat to Brienne’s wrinkly cheeks, though she is quick to gather herself.“… Jaime. The point is… I alsocouldn’t help but notice that you have a great deal of blunt weapons lyingaround.”
“Memories of many other lives, yes. Why is that ofinterest to you?”
“I can fix them for you. And I bet no other maid youmay find to do the duty can do that for you, too.”
“I mean no offense, m’lady, but aren’t you past theage to be a smith?” he argues.
“… give me the weapon you love the least and give me afire worth a forge and you can see for yourself.”
“I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.”
“I’m not afraid of pain. I’m not afraid of anything!”she insists.
He laughs. “You seem quite serious.”
“I keep my promises. Do you?”
“Is that a challenge? I quite like that. Fine, youshall have it, Miss Brienne.”
Before she knows what’s happening, the stovetransforms into a fully heated forge. Tyrion jumps into a metal bin beside it,succumbing to the small flame the alcohol in the wine within with a satisfiedsigh.
Jaime hands Brienne a rusty blade. “If you break it,it won’t be a great loss. This one was never quite my favorite, actually.”
Brienne only now notices that the handsome man wears agolden hand on his right as he nervously stuffs it away with a forced smile. She takes the blade from him and sets out to work, finding all that she needslying beside the forge. She is irritated that the handsome man keeps watchingher, though he insists he does so for her own safety. He wouldn’t want her todrop the hammer on her head.
“Bad reputation.”
She won’t let that stop her, so Brienne gathers all ofher strengths and starts to labor, no matter how tough it proves to be on hernow old body. However, there is still might in her body and years of work atthe forge taught her the moves her body won’t forget in a lifetime. Jaimewatches intently, all the more shocked when the old woman presents him aperfectly redone arakh, though arguably, she even improved it as she madeembellishments visible again where they had long since faded.
“I am a wizard myself but I never saw such magic.”
“It’s not magic. It’s craft,” Brienne argues, feelingquite embarrassed by his compliments. She had people in awe with her handicraftbefore, but never quite so. The way his eyes beam up… it’s something, well, magical.
“And magic is another kind of craft. This ismarvelous, Brienne, truly. Well, it appears I have to keep my promise to younow, which is why you are now welcome into my castle as our new maid… and mypersonal smith.”
“… Thank you.”
“Oh no, I thank you,” he smiles, carrying the arakhaway to put it back in place.
For a while, Brienne is more than pleased with her newmaster, but he soon reveals himself as quite an arrogant brat. Not only does hespend too much time in the bathroom to fix himself up in her humble opinion, but he goes nearly insane when he ends up using some strange mix of potions, blaming Brienne for messing up the order thanks to her cleaning. Brienne isshocked when the man emerges from the bath with no more than a towel wrappedaround his waist, complaining about how ugly he is now, his blond hair nowshort and he grew a beard, too!
“I might just as well die!” he declares.
“You are being overly dramatic.”
“Last time this happened, he summoned a dark spirit,”Tyrion warns her, which prompts Brienne into action despite her growingdiscomfort for the sake of being so close to a barely clothed handsome man thelikes of this sorcerer. “Jaime, now look. Nothing gets better by doing this. And anyway, you are a wizard, are you not? You can change your hair and beardback, can’t you?”
“Doesn’t matter. It happened.”
“What, by the Seven, even happened to begin with toupset you so?”
“I look like the self I want to forget!” Jaime cries.“I banished that ugly bastard to where he belonged! And now he is back.”
“Ugly? Ugly! You don’t even know what that means, do you? You are as handsome as ever, perchance even more! Look at you! I mean… I mean… what I am trying to say isthat whatever part of your past haunts you, you are living in the present now.And in the present, you are complaining about your beautiful looks, saying youare ugly, when you don’t even know what ugly is. I've never been beautiful forall my life! Do you see me complain all day long?! No! Right, because thisdoesn’t matter! It shouldn’t matter!”
Brienne storms out of the castle as rain starts topour from the sky. She allows the tears to come this time.
“I don’t want to stay here anymore!” she whimpers, surprised when the scarecrow offers her an umbrella as a small consolation, though that shock is nothing compared to Jaime approaching her all of a sudden, though now more properly dressed.
“What do you want?”
“I came to apologize,” he answers, much to hersurprise. “That was… unworthy of me, please forgive me.”
“Then why did you do it?”
“When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see thesorcerer Jaime, I saw Jaime Lannister, the man who had his hand cut off by adark wizard in times of war.” He points at his golden hand. “And there is no magicto fix that ever again. That part of me is gone. And I swore to myself to buryit. I never wanted to be this man again.”
“Just because you look like that doesn’t mean you are this,”she points out to him.
“I see that now, too.”
Brienne stares at him. “You do?”
She did not expect Jaime to admit to much of anything, let alone show any kind of humbleness.
“… Yes,” he says, looking down at the puddles fed bythe rain. “Because I realized it when I looked at you instead.”
“At me?”
“You look like an old woman but you have the heart andstrength of a knight.”
Brienne blushes furiously at that, not knowing what tomake of any of this. Just what is her heart doing, beating so fast over such acompliment? He means nothing more but to make it up to her, doesn’t he?
“… I am sorry. Can we… can we agree on a truce?”
“You need trust to have a truce.”
“I trust you.”
“… Then… then we have a truce, I suppose.”
He smiles at her. “So you won’t leave?”
“I don’t have anywhere else to go anyway.”
“Then let’s go back home, shall we?” he holds out hishand to her and Brienne allows Jaime to lead her back into his moving castle,no, their home. And for a moment, however brief, Brienne feels like a young girl all of a sudden.
Over time, Brienne finds herself accustoming to thisnew life faster than she ever would have imagined. In fact, she starts to feelhappiness when she thought all was lost the moment she had to run away fromhome. She is shocked when Jaime discovers a secret note the wretched Witch ofthe Waste attached to her.
“Old magic, very powerful, too,” Jaime commentspensively.
“Don’t tell me that’s from her!” Tyrion pouts.
“It appears so.”
“I need more wine.”
“You don’t.”
“What… what is the matter with you and her?” Brienne wantsto know.
“We have a… history going back… an old tale, nearlyforgotten. And now you seem to have a story of your own, do you not, Brienne?”
She says nothing, not knowing how to explain herself.
“He, the one whograsped a shooting star… such a mindless man, your heart shall forever be mine.No one walks away from me… She is still as unoriginal as I remember her tobe,” Jaime scoffs before setting the letter magically on fire.
“You can’t lift her curse either, can you?” Brienneasks hesitantly.
“I’m afraid I can’t. She’s always had a fancy forparticularly wretched curses. And this one, it seems, can only be lifted byyourself, Brienne. Thus, on this, I am afraid, I cannot help you with mymagic.”
“Lift my own curse… well, that means it’s a lostcause,” Brienne mutters to herself, feeling at least ten years older. Sheremains inconsolable for a time, but Pod and Jaime manage to cheer her back upand Brienne starts to feel younger again. Particularly in Jaime’s presence, shetends to forget time and time again that she is an ugly old hag no one couldpossibly enjoy to have in his or her company. Though those moments don’t lastlong, because deep down, Brienne knows that one simple truth, that he may enjoyher company but that he could never fancy or Gods forbid love her. No one evercan, not in that way.
New trouble is not far away as it is revealed that theletters that came to them the first day she came to stay at the moving castlemay force Jaime to help either the King or the Queen who have been at war eversince the Prince that was Promised went missing. Jaime, like any othersorcerer, is obliged to fulfill that duty, though Jaime tended to escape byusing aliases to keep himself hidden.
“It appears we are running out of options, that isunless…,” Jaime ponders.
“Unless…?”Brienne frowns.
“Unless you volunteered to help me.”
“What would you want me to do?”
He smiles. “Oh, since you offered your services, Brienne, you would only have to pretend to be the Kingslayer’s mother and tell the Kingthat his powers are no good and that he would do best searching for someoneelse to do the deed for him.”
“The King?Isn’t he at Winterfell after he took the former stronghold of the Starks fromthe Boltons?”
“No more. He’s travelled to King’s Landing fornegotiations meant to fail. The Dragon Queen won’t budge, that’s for sure, andneither will that stubborn idiot Stannis. All you’d have to do is tell him thatI am no good follower of R’hllor, which is true enough, and that my serviceswould only ever bring him great disadvantage. I’m no longer the fighter I usedto be, tell him that. I lost a hand, after all!”
“You lost that before, Jaime!” Tyrion argues.
“He doesn’t have to know that!”
“You ask me to lie for you?”
“You volunteered!”
“I did not!”
However, in the end, Brienne feels obliged to go asJaime showed kindness to her when likely no one else ever would, consideringthat she is a now old, ugly, mannish woman who struggles working a forge, entirely alone in the world. Thus, she decides to do Jaime the favor and speakto Stannis Baratheon. She is shocked when Jaime puts a ring on her finger, telling her that it’s a magical jewel that will guide her the way back homeeach time.
“Why would you give me that?” she asks.
“To keep you safe, of course.”
Brienne huffs. “I don’t need anyone’s protection.”
“That doesn’t mean you can’t use it.” He winks at herbefore they part ways.
Brienne heads out to meet the King’s advisor andJaime’s former mentor, the powerful witch Melisandre of Asshai. Just as she isabout to come face-to-face with the woman, Brienne runs into no one other thanthe Witch of the Waste. Furious, she demands retribution for her act, but thewitch has little care to give, arguing that she has any intention to get toMelisandre before Brienne can to finally gain more power.
“Only power is power, after all,” as the witch tellsher.
The two women start to race, but the closer they cometo Melisandre the older the Witch of the Waste looks. Brienne is in shock. Sheis the one to reach Melisandre first, who seems all the more amused byBrienne’s presence. The sorceress greets her, all the more interested inBrienne posing as the Kingslayer’s mother.
“He was my last apprentice, did you know? So talented,so gifted. I thought about leaving my position to him,” she tells Brienne, nodding at her necklace with a beaming red stone at its center. “I would haveliked for him to continue to teach the next generations about the Red God. Afterall, he once ridded the world of a great evil, the Mad King. He proved himselfworthy that day, even if that meant his reputation was forever ruined. However, his heart was stolen by darkness, and he left before the Lord of Light couldcleanse him of it. Such a pity.”
Jaime’s heart – stolen? What does she mean? Briennehas so many questions, but she doesn’t get to ask them yet again.
When the Witch of the Waste arrives, or rather dragsherself into the room, Melisandre can’t hold back her laughter.
“What happened to her?” Brienne wants to know.
“She got a taste, a taste of the real world. Becauseour dear Witch of the Waste seems to have forgotten.”
“The real world?”
“She is drained of her powers, no more than a harmlessold woman, devoid of all power,” Melisandre explains. The other witch isfurious, but so out of breath and short before passing out that she can’t domuch to protest. “That is what happens to all sorcerers who let themselves beconsumed by selfish desires. She made deals with darkness and that is now thepayback for it. And if your son does not watch it, he’ll end up just like her,as something that is… anything but human, powerless, meaningless. The onlything that may save him would be Lightbringer, then.”
“Lightbringer?”
“The sword of legend that can purge the world ofdarkness.”
“And where would one find that magical sword?” Brienneasks.
“It isn’t found, it’s made, but no one ever did.”
Brienne, despite her misgivings for the witch, findsherself speaking on her behalf as she finds such treatment more than cruel andunjustified. For a moment, she is on the verge of turning young, but onceMelisandre mentions it, Brienne quickly turns back to her old self.
“So… you, Mother of the Kingslayer, came here to tellus what?” Melisandre wants to know.
“That my son is unfit of fighting the King’s war. Helost a hand, you must know, and his belief in the Lord of Light has since beenshaken. He will only cause King Stannis trouble, I am sure.”
“And why couldn’t he come here himself to tell me so?”the witch questions, obviously not really buying it, which makes Brienne feellike failure already, but before she can grow older again, she gathers herself.
She has to do this, for Jaime.
“You ask me?” Brienne huffs, putting on the best actshe can. “I am merely doing what all mothers do, to protect the dear children.”
“Is that so?”
“You say he has no heart, right? I suppose that, in away… that is not entirely untrue. You are right that he can be selfish andarrogant, and sometimes I can’t see what he’s thinking because he is good to dohide his sadness behind his smiles. But of that one thing I am sure: He is notevil and isn’t ever going to be.”
“What gives you that confidence?”
“… I trust him,” Brienne answers resolutely, ifshocked by the apparent force of truth coming with that message.
“The Kingslayer’s Mother… You are in love with him,are you not?”
Brienne blushes, but doesn’t get to ponder the wordsas suddenly the Witch of the Waste means to intervene loudly: “Lies! All lies!”she wheezes all of a sudden.
“Shut your mouth already!” Brienne hisses.
“You are not his mother! That’d make you my mother, too! That can’t be! She’s dead! Dead! Dead!”
“What did I just tell you?!” Brienne curses, only forher eyes to widen once realization dawns on her. “And what was that???”
Brienne doesn’t get to ponder this much as Melisandretells her that Jaime will suffer the same destiny as the Witch of the Waste, being bereft of all power and turned into a shadow of himself, if he does notfollow the call of duty every sorcerer has to abide by. Just as Melisandremeans to question her about her true identity, Jaime appears in disguise andsnatches Brienne away. Melisandre gives them chase, but they manage to escape, though they end up rescuing the Witch of the Waste as well, something Jaime isnot at all pleased about.
“I didn’t recognize you. Otherwise I would have leftyou there,” Jaime scoffs.
“I would have left you there, too, brother dear.”
“Good that we agree on something at last.”
“What is it with you two?” Brienne asks.
“What? I thought you made my sister’s acquaintancealready.”
“Your sister???”
“Twin sister.”
“Why wouldn’t you tell me that?” Brienne pouts.
“I didn’t find that detail important.”
“Detail?! This is no detail. Why would I not find thatimportant to your mind?!”
“I walked away from her long time ago,” Jaime explains.
“And yet here we are, brother dear.”
“Thanks to you, not me.”
Cersei narrows her eyes at him. “How’s the littlemonster doing?”
“Better than you, apparently.”
“Pity.”
Jaime is tempted to throw her off the carriage andleave her, but Brienne tells him that it would be without honor to do such athing. However, their escape and Brienne’s safety foremost, takes priority forJaime soon enough, which is why he instructs her to use the ring to guide herback to the castle while he will distract Melisandre’s shadow creaturesfollowing them. Brienne urges him to stay by her side, but Jaime tells her thathe found his courage back thanks to her and it’s time to use it. They part andBrienne alongside Cersei nearly crash into the castle, though Brienne does notcare much as her mind is focused on Jaime, who has not yet returned.
Tyrion and Cersei instantly get into a fight, whichalso reveals that Tyrion is another brother of hers, and Brienne feels all themore tempted to throw them both out of the house, and if Tyrion wasn’tnecessary for the house, she would. However, her frustration ends when she canhear noises upstairs.
“That must be Jaime!” she concludes. Brienne wants torun upstairs to check on him, but when she reaches the staircase, she findsbloodied black feathers spread all around.
“What happened here?” she gasps.
“He transformed into his not-human self, to protectyou,” Pod informs her.
“So… so that is what he would turn into if he went toofar?”
“He can turn back for now, but it gets more difficulteach time. I wouldn’t go up there, though, m’lady,” Pod warns her. “It’sdangerous and Master Jaime wants to be alone when he turns.”
“He needs help,” Brienne argues and proceeds up thestairs, not letting her fright get the better of her. She finds Jaime, and itis just as Pod said, he is a man in bird’s shape with a feral, dark energysurrounding him that she can feel her skin crawl.
“Jaime! You are back! Are you alright? I saw blood.”
“Stay away from me,” he wheezes, trying his best tohide himself from her view. He doesn’t want her to see him like this, no one issupposed to see what he is on the verge of becoming, but he can’t bear thethought to be like this in front of Brienne. He can’t fail her like that.
“But you need help!” she insists. “I want to set youfree from the curse put on you!”
“You should think about your own, Brienne. Why would youtry to do that for a monster like me anyway?”
“Because I… I…,” she stutters. “I… care about you andI don’t want to lose you. We have a truce, don’t you remember?”
“It's too late!”
“It’s not. Just let me help you.”
“Leave me now, Brienne.”
Before she can say anything more, Jaime retreated to apart of the castle she can’t get to. Brienne walks back downstairs to get moreinformation from Pod, Tyrion, and Cersei. While Tyrion in particular cannot saymuch without breaking the magical contract that is part of his and Jaime’sshared curse, he can confirm that this ominous sword named Lightbringer may haveto do with it.
“We spent many, many years searching for it, but nosuch luck. Why do you think do we have that many around the house?” Tyriontells her.
“Melisandre said that you can’t find it but that youhave to make it.”
“So?”
“Well, maybe I can make it?” she suggests uncertainly.“I am a smith, after all.”
“I don’t think it’s that easy,” Cersei scoffs. “Youare just an old hag.”
“Rich coming from you now, sister,” Tyrion huffs. “Andno one asked for your opinion anyway… Why is she here again? I thought we all decidednot to like her, you included, Brienne. She put that curse on you.”
“She’s an old woman and in need of help, that is why,”Brienne answers.
“Ugh. Honorable people all around. Then I rather am anevil fire, fueled by wine. That’s fun at least.”
“Back to the sword… it may not be easy, and perhaps it’sfor nothing, but I have to try at least, don’t you think?” Brienne argues – andTyrion can’t tell her no this time.
The next day, Jaime emerges, looking like his usualself. Brienne is glad to see that he is alright, though she can also spot theworry behind the thin veil of his smile. All the same, the group now has todeal with the fact that the Witch of the Waste, Cersei Lannister, is nowstaying there as she would be absolutely helpless without their support. Tyrionis furious, Jaime is irritated, and Podrick is confused. Brienne, for her part,is only interested in finding out more about the magical sword named Lightbringer.Jaime tells her all that he knows of the blade, that it is made of Valyriansteel, the Song of Ice and Fire. Brienne asks him if he is in possession ofsuch a blade, and he says there is one, the ancestral sword of House Stark.
“Something… my father took without asking, really.”
“Your family is odd. To say the least.”
He snorts, amused. “We are all kinds of terrible, Iknow.”
“What happened between you anyway?” Brienne askscautiously.
“I loved too much, she loved too little, and Tyrion… hesought love he could not get and turned to someone whose love did him littlegood.”
“I suppose you can’t tell me more?”
“Not without ending up dead by breaking my contract, I’mafraid.”
“Be it as it may… will you let me have that sword?”
“You want to forge Lightbringer?” He frowns.
“If I’m not mistaken, this sword is called Ice. If itis exposed to fire… perhaps that will do the trick. This sword is so big, I canmake two out of it. That will give me at least one blade to experiment with tosee what works best. It’s worth the try.”
“I don’t want you to overexert yourself,” Jaime argueswith concern heavy in his voice.
“Nonsense,” she scoffs. “Remember our truce? Now it’stime that you trust me to forge that sword.”
“But Brienne, I really don’t want you to…”
“I will forge that sword… for you.”
“I won’t convince you otherwise, will I?”
“I always keep my promises.”
“I was afraid you were going to say that.”
And so, Brienne begins the difficult task, if notimpossible task, to forge a sword she doesn’t know the shape or exact materialsof, and that as an old woman no less. However, that won’t stop her from trying. She has to give it a shot, at least. Because she can’t bear the thought to loseJaime to the darkness without a fight.
But the clock is ticking as the war comes closer andcloser, and with two monarchs demanding of Jaime to fight their wars, to thepoint of forgetting regret itself and losing his last shreds of humanity, things look more than dire.
And while Brienne focuses all of her efforts onforging that sword to save Jaime, the sorcerer is more concerned with forging ahome for her within the castle.
As much as both try to hold on to those little hopesand big promises of a future, the ongoing war between Queen Daenerys and KingStannis keep raging, forcing Jaime out of the safety of the castle into thedarkness that will consume him soon enough unless Brienne manages to forgeLightbringer.
How this tale concludes, though, only the sorcerersknow the answers…

This will be a beginners guide from a very eager to learn beginner! I found my first article on the healing power of Crystals and gemstones about 3 years ago. I was so intrigued and wanted to learn as much as I could about these incredible gifts from earth! In this blog post I will share with you all of the most important and most FAQ’s about crystals.
We will discuss how to utilize crystals. Crystals can have an incredibly positive impact on our emotions, overall health and happiness.
A brief history and break down of healing crystals.
Crystals, whether they are considered to be “precious stones” or “semi precious stones” have been used by a variety of cultures/faiths dating back to biblical times. This is a general and more literal explanation of what a crystal is:
” A Crystal or crystalline solid is a solid materials whose constituents ( such as atoms, molecules, or irons) are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all directions”. Single crystals are usually identifiable by their geometric shape, consisting of flat faces with specific, characteristics orientations.”
The word “Crystal” derives from the ancient greek word (Krustallos) meaning both “ice’ and “rock”
Whether they are formed by magmatic, metamorphic processing or the precipitation from water. (which is what creates the different types of druses or quartz) They are extremely beautiful and miraculous creations!
Some general basics on healing crystals.
Crystals and gemstones have been known not just for their unique beauty. They’re also known for the healing energies that are inside of these incredible stones. In ancient times crystals were used to distinguish royalty, honor the dead, safeguard villages and homes. They were used for common ailments, assisting in fertility & for spiritual ceremonies.

Some of the most common healing crystals and their meanings & uses.
The 7 essential types of Crystals that are associated with Chakras are:
Amethyst -crown Chakra
Carnelian-sacral Chakra
Yellow Jade- solar plexus
Green Aventurine- heart Chakra
Lapis Lazuli- throat Chakra
Clear crystal- Third eye Chakra
Red Jasper- root Chakra
whether I am working, walking the dog or at an appointment in a waiting room my crystals are always with me.
You don’t have to practice Reiki or use crystals in any one specific way. There are limitless uses, ideas and preferances in which people use and benefit from their crystals.
A few ways you can use and feel the benefits of Crystals are:
Keeping a crystal with you in your pocket, purse or on your desk,
Holding a crystal in your hands. Keeping it close to your skin such as, wearing it on a necklace or bracelet
Having crystals on your desk or in your workspace
Putting a crystal(s) on your night table or dresser in your bedroom.
Placing certain crystals under your pillow (or inside your pillowcase) for a restful and peaceful nights sleep.
Placing crystals around your home and office/workspace
How to know which healing crystals are right for you.

I created this little space for meditation, prayer, journaling and having quiet time to truly feel and connect with my crystals. This area is my special space inside my “Cloffice” my home office & walk in closet combination!! To see more of my DIY attic to Cloffice project CLICK HERE!!
How I use my Crystals in my daily life, both with my day to day routine and work.

I think of my crystals as a source of strength, comfort, inspiration and motivation. Whether they are in my pillowcase (for a much needed restful nights sleep) or on my desk (for concentration and inspiration) my beloved stones are never far away.

Feeling the affects of the crystals for me, has been a sense of comfort, peace, strength and inspiration. It can be as simple as feeling the motivation and “pick me up” I need to complete my daily tasks. Crystal healing has made a huge impact on my emotional & physical well being.
There will always be debate on how, why and “IF” Crystals can actually “heal”. For me, however it is as simple as knowing how I feel. I personally FEEL better and felt a difference in my overall mood and emotional state.
So I don’t really need to prove or explain that to anyone who thinks otherwise. I do, however fee it is important to at least share my own personal experiences. My hope is that it may also have the same positive impact on you too!
Do you already have a Crystal collection started? Which Crystals and stones have impated your life? I would love to know which Crystals you’re currently working with. Tell me your thoughts and most used Crystals in the comments. You can also message me directly on Facebook and Instagram!
I would love to hear from you! If you found this post helpful please share! Know someone who is interested in learning more about Crystals? Be sure to send them this post!

10 Steps to Mix STAT Rating Information with Web site Efficiency Metrics
Too usually, we assume that search engine marketing greatest practices will work in any trade towards any aggressive set. However most greatest practices go untested and will not be “best” in each scenario.
Everyone knows that ways that labored in 2020 gained’t essentially transfer the needle in 2021 as Core Internet Vitals (CWV) and different alerts shuffle to the entrance. We’ve got to do higher for our companies and our purchasers.
I’m an information nerd at coronary heart with numerous battle scars from 15 years in search engine marketing. The concept of analyzing hundreds of native SERPs gave the impression of an excessive amount of enjoyable to cross up. I discovered some stunning correlations, and simply as importantly, constructed a strategy and information set that may be up to date quarterly to indicate adjustments over time.
I analyzed 50,000+ SERPs within the retail banking sector so I might make sense of the large shifts in rankings and search behaviors in the course of the lockdown interval. We’ve got a whole lot of historic information for financial institution web sites, so evaluating pre/put up COVID information could be simpler than ranging from scratch.
I’ll share how I did it beneath. However first, I need to share WHY I feel sharing this kind of analysis is so necessary for the search engine marketing group.
Why validate search engine marketing greatest practices with information?
It’s a good time to be an search engine marketing. We’ve got wonderful instruments and might collect extra information than ever. We’ve got thriving communities and wonderful basic training materials.
But, we regularly see our craft distilled into overly-simplified “best practices” which can be assumed to be universally true. But when there’s one common fact in search engine marketing, it’s that there are not any common truths. A greatest follow might be misinterpreted or outdated, resulting in missed alternatives or outright hurt to a enterprise.
Utilizing the rising significance of CWV for example, SEOs have a possibility (and obligation) to separate truth from fiction. We have to know if, and by how a lot, CWV will impression rankings over time so we are able to prioritize our efforts.
We are able to elevate our search engine marketing sport individually and collectively by testing and validating greatest practices with analysis. It simply takes a curious thoughts, the suitable instruments, and a willingness to simply accept the outcomes reasonably than drive a story.
Failing to validate greatest practices is a legal responsibility for search engine marketing practitioners and reveals an unwillingness to problem assumptions. In my expertise, an absence of knowledge can result in a senior stakeholders’ opinions carrying extra weight than an search engine marketing professional’s suggestions.
Begin by asking the suitable questions
Actual perception comes from combining information from a number of sources to reply crucial questions and guarantee your methods are backed by legitimate information. In my evaluation of native banks, I began by itemizing the questions I needed to know the solutions to:
What traits are shared by top-ranking native financial institution web sites?
Who’re banks really competing towards within the SERPs? Is it primarily different banks?
How do aggressive SERPS change primarily based on when/the place/how customers search?
How can smaller, native companies acquire an edge over bigger rivals from outdoors their area?
How does SERP composition have an effect on a financial institution’s capacity to rank properly for focused key phrases?
How necessary are Core Internet Vitals (CWV) for rankings? How does this variation over time?
You could possibly run this identical evaluation by changing “banks” with different native enterprise classes. The listing of potential questions is infinite so you’ll be able to regulate them primarily based in your wants.
Right here’s an necessary reminder – be ready to simply accept the solutions even when they’re inconclusive or contradictory to your assumptions. Information-driven SEOs need to keep away from affirmation bias if we’re going to stay goal.
Right here’s how I analyzed 50,000 search ends in just a few hours
I mixed three of my favourite instruments to research SERPs at scale and collect the information wanted to reply my questions:
STAT to generated rating stories for choose key phrases
Screaming Frog to crawl web sites and collect technical search engine marketing information
Power BI to research the massive information units and create easy visualizations
Step 1: Decide your information wants
I used US Census Bureau information to establish all cities with populations over 100,000, as a result of I needed a illustration of native financial institution SERPs throughout the nation. My listing ended up together with 314 separate cities, however you could possibly customise your listing to fit your wants.
I additionally needed to collect information for desktop and cellular searches to check SERP variations between the machine sorts.
Step 2: Determine your key phrases
I selected “banks near me” and “banks in city, st” primarily based on their robust native intent and excessive search volumes, in comparison with extra particular key phrases for banking providers.
Step three: Generate a STAT import file in .csv format
After you have your key phrases and market listing, it’s time to prepare the bulk upload for STAT. Use the template supplied within the hyperlink to create a .csv file with the next fields:
Venture: The identify of the brand new STAT mission, or an current mission.
Folder: The identify of the brand new folder, or an current folder. (That is an non-obligatory column that you would be able to depart clean.)
Web site: The area identify for the location you need to observe. Word, for our functions you’ll be able to enter any URL you need to observe right here. The Prime 20 Report will embrace all rating URLs for the goal key phrases even when they aren’t listed in your “Site” column.
Key phrase: The search question you’re including.
Tags: Enter as many key phrase tags as you need, separated by commas. I used “city” and “near me” as tags to tell apart between the question sorts. (That is an non-obligatory column that you would be able to depart clean.)
Market: Specify the market (nation and language) wherein you wish to observe the key phrase. I used “US-en” for US English.
Location: If you wish to observe the key phrase in a particular location, specify town, state, province, ZIP code, and/or postal code. I used town and state listing in “city, st” format.
Gadget: Choose whether or not you desire to Desktop or Smartphone outcomes. I chosen each.
Every market, location, and machine kind will multiply the variety of key phrases you need to observe. I ended up with 1,256 key phrases (314 markets X 2 key phrases X 2 units) in my import file.
As soon as your file is full, you’ll be able to import to STAT and start monitoring.
Step Four: Run a Prime 20 Report in STAT for all key phrases
STAT’s built-in Google SERP Top 20 Comparison report captures the highest 20 natural outcomes from every SERP at completely different intervals (every day, weekly, month-to-month, and so on.) to have a look at adjustments over time. I didn’t want every day information so I merely let it run on two consecutive days and eliminated the information I didn’t want. I re-run the identical report quarterly to trace adjustments over time.
Watch the video beneath to discover ways to arrange this report!
My 1,256 key phrases generated over 25,000 rows of knowledge per day. Every row is a unique natural itemizing and consists of the key phrase, month-to-month search quantity, rank (consists of the native pack), base rank (doesn’t embrace the native pack), https/http protocol of the rating URL, the rating URL, and your tags.
Right here’s an instance of the uncooked output in CSV format:
It’s simple to see how helpful this information is by itself but it surely turns into much more highly effective after we clear it up and begin crawling the rating URLs.
Step 5: Clear up and normalize your STAT URLs information
At this level you could have invested 1-2 hours in gathering the preliminary information. This step is a little more time consuming, however information cleaning lets you run extra superior evaluation and uncover extra helpful insights in Screaming Frog.
Listed below are the adjustments I made to the STAT rankings information to organize for the following steps in Screaming Frog and Energy BI. You’ll find yourself with a number of columns of URLs. Every serves a objective later.
Duplicate the Rating URL column to a brand new column referred to as Normalized URL.
Take away URL parameters from the Normalized URL fields through the use of Excel’s text to columns instrument and separating by “?”. I deleted the brand new columns(s) containing the URL parameters as a result of they weren’t useful in my evaluation.
Duplicate the brand new, clear Normalized URL column to a brand new column referred to as TLD. Use the textual content to columns instrument on the TLD column and separate by “/” to take away the whole lot besides the area identify and subdomains. Delete the brand new columns. I selected to maintain the subdomains in my TLD column however you’ll be able to take away them if it helps your evaluation.
Lastly, create yet another column referred to as Full URL that may ultimately develop into the listing of URLs that you simply’ll crawl in Screaming Frog. To generate the Full URL, merely use Excel’s concatenate function to mix the Protocol and Normalized URL columns. Your system will look one thing like this: =concatenate(A1, “://”, C1) to incorporate the “://” in a legitimate URL string.
The 25,000+ rows in my information set are properly inside Excel’s limitations, so I’m able to manipulate the information simply in a single place. Chances are you’ll want to make use of a database (I like BigQuery) as your information units develop.
Step 6: Categorize your SERP outcomes by web site kind
Skimming by way of the SERP outcomes, it’s simple to see that banks should not the one kind of web site that rank for key phrases with native search intent. Since considered one of my preliminary questions was SERP composition, I needed to establish all the various kinds of web sites and label each for additional evaluation.
This step is by far probably the most time consuming and insightful. I spent three hours categorizing the preliminary batch of 25,000+ URLs into one of many following classes:
Establishment (banks and credit score union web sites)
Listing (aggregators, native enterprise directories, and so on.)
Evaluations (native and nationwide websites like Yelp.com)
Schooling (content material about banks on .edu domains)
Authorities (content material about banks on .gov domains and municipal websites)
Jobs (careers websites and job aggregators)
Information (native and nationwide information websites with banking content material)
Meals Banks (sure, loads of meals banks rank for “banks near me” key phrases)
Actual Property (industrial and residential actual property listings)
Search Engines (ranked content material belonging to a search engine)
Social Media (ranked content material on social media websites)
Different (utterly random outcomes not associated to any of the above)
Your native SERPs will seemingly comprise many of those web site sorts and different unrelated classes reminiscent of meals banks. Pace up the method by sorting and filtering your TLD and Normalized URL columns to categorize a number of rows concurrently. For instance, all of the yelp.com rankings might be categorized as “Reviews” with a fast copy/paste.
At this level, your rankings information set is full and you might be prepared to start crawling the top-ranking websites in your trade to see what they’ve in widespread.
Step 7: Crawl your goal web sites with Screaming Frog
My preliminary STAT information recognized over 6,600 distinctive pages from native financial institution web sites that ranked within the high 20 natural search outcomes. That is far too many pages to judge manually. Enter Screaming Frog, a crawler that mimics Google’s net crawler and extracts tons of search engine marketing information from web sites.
I configured Screaming Frog to crawl every of the 6,600 rating pages for a bigger evaluation of traits shared by top-ranking financial institution web sites. Don’t simply let SF free although. Make sure to configure it correctly to avoid wasting time and keep away from crawling pointless pages.
These settings guarantee we’ll get all the information we have to reply our questions in a single crawl:
List Mode: Paste in a de-duplicated Full URL listing out of your STAT information. In my case, this was 6,600+ URLs.
Database Storage Mode: It might be a bit slower than Reminiscence (RAM) Storage, however saving your crawl outcomes in your arduous disk ensures you gained’t lose your outcomes in case you make a mistake (like I’ve many occasions) and shut your report earlier than you end analyzing the information.
Limit Crawl Depth: Set this to zero (zero) so the spider will solely crawl the URLs in your listing with out following inside hyperlinks to different pages on these domains.
APIs: I extremely advocate utilizing the Pagespeed Insights Integration to drag Lighthouse velocity metrics immediately into your crawl information. When you’ve got a Moz account with API entry, you too can pull hyperlink and area information from the Moz API with the built-in integration.
After you have configured the spider, let it rip! It might take a number of minutes to a number of hours relying on what number of URLs you’re crawling and your laptop’s velocity and reminiscence constraints. Simply be affected person! You may strive working bigger crawls in a single day or on an additional laptop to keep away from bogging your major machine down.
Step eight: Export your Screaming Frog crawl information to Excel
Dumping your crawl information into Excel is remarkably simple.
Step 9: Be part of your information units in Energy BI
At this level, you need to have two information sources in Excel: one to your STAT rankings information and one other to your Screaming Frog crawl information. Our objective is to mix the 2 information sources to see how natural search rank could also be influenced by on-page search engine marketing parts and web site efficiency. To do that, we should first merge the information.
When you’ve got entry to a Home windows PC, the free version of Power BI is highly effective sufficient to get you began. Start by loading your two data sources into a new project utilizing the Get Information wizard.
As soon as your information units are loaded, it’s time to make the magic occur by creating relationships in your data to unlock correlations between rankings and web site traits. To mix your information in Energy BI, create a many-to-many relationship between your STAT Full URL and Screaming Frog Authentic URL fields.
If you’re new to BI instruments and information visualization, don’t fear! There are many useful tutorials and movies only a fast search away. At this level, it’s actually arduous to interrupt something and you’ll experiment with numerous methods to research your information and share insights with many kinds of charts and graphs.
I ought to be aware that Energy BI is my most popular information visualization instrument however you could possibly use Tableau or some equally highly effective. Google Information Studio was not an possibility for this evaluation as a result of it solely permits for left outer joins of the a number of information sources and doesn’t assist “many-to-many” relationships. It’s a technical approach of claiming Information Studio isn’t versatile sufficient to create the information relationships that we’d like.
Step 10: Analyze and visualize!
Energy BI’s built-in visualizations mean you can shortly summarize and current information. That is the place we are able to begin analyzing the information to reply the questions we got here up with earlier.
Outcomes — what did we be taught?
Listed below are a pair examples of the insights gleaned from merging our rankings and crawl information. Spoiler alert — CWV doesn’t strongly impression natural rankings….but!
Who’re banks really competing towards within the SERPs? Is it primarily different banks?
On desktops, about 67% of natural search outcomes belong to monetary establishments (banks and credit score unions) with heavy competitors from evaluations websites (7%) and online directories (22%). This data helps form our search engine marketing methods for banks by exposing alternatives to watch and preserve listings in related directories and evaluations websites.
Okay, now let’s mash up our information sources to see how the distribution of web site classes varies by rank on desktop units. Out of the blue, we are able to see that monetary establishments really occupy nearly all of the highest three outcomes whereas evaluations websites and directories are extra prevalent in positions Four-10.
How necessary are Core Internet Vitals (CWV) for rankings? How does this variation over time?
Web site efficiency and web site velocity are sizzling subjects in search engine marketing and can solely develop into extra necessary as CWV turns into a rating sign in Could this yr. We are able to start to know the relationships between web site velocity and rankings by evaluating STAT rankings and Pagespeed Insights information from Screaming Frog stories.
As of January 2021, websites with greater Lighthouse Performance Scores (i.e. they load sooner) are inclined to rank higher than websites with decrease scores. This might assist justify investments in web site velocity and web site efficiency.
Some CWV parts correlate extra intently with higher rankings and others are extra scattered. This isn’t to say CWV aren’t necessary or significant, however reasonably it’s a place to begin for additional evaluation after Could.
So what? What can we be taught from this kind of evaluation?
Individually, STAT and Screaming Frog are extremely highly effective search engine marketing instruments. The information they supply are helpful in case you occur to be an search engine marketing however the capacity to merge information and extract relationships will multiply your worth in any group that values information, and acts on insights.
Moreover validating some typically accepted search engine marketing information with information (“faster sites are rewarded with better rankings”), higher use of relational information may assist us keep away from spending precious time on much less necessary ways (“improve Cumulative Layout Shift at all costs!”).
In fact, correlation doesn’t indicate causation, and aggregated information doesn’t assure an final result for particular person websites. However in case you’re a financial institution marketing skilled answerable for buyer acquisition from natural channels, you’ll must deliver this kind of information to your stakeholders to justify elevated investments in search engine marketing.
By sharing the instruments and methodology, I hope others will take it additional by constructing and contributing their further findings to the search engine marketing group. What different datasets can we mix to deepen our understanding of SERPs on a bigger scale? Let me know your ideas within the feedback!

The 'Oregon Trail' Studio Made a Game About Slavery. Then Parents Saw It - In June, screenwriter John Ridley wrote an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times that called on Warner Media to remove the film Gone with the Wind from their new streaming service, HBO Max. Ridley argued that the film – widely regarded as an American classic – “glorifies the antebellum south… some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color.” His op-ed led to an online protest that culminated in Warner Media removing Gone with the Wind from HBO Max and reposting the film with a new introductory disclaimer featuring film scholar Jacqueline Stewart. The success of Ridley’s op-ed points to an idea almost all of us accept: portrayals of history by movies, novels, and television shows have a dramatic effect—rightly or wrongly—on how we remember the past. But can’t the same thing be said about historical video games? Is there a video game equivalent to Gone with the Wind? The answer is: almost. In 1992, the Minnesota Educational Computing Corporation or MECC, makers of The Oregon Trail, released a game called Freedom!. Using many of the underlying mechanics of Oregon Trail, Freedom! followed the journey of a runaway slave in the antebellum south attempting to escape bondage. Unlike Gone with the Wind, Freedom! was made for laudable reasons: to educate grade school students on the history of slavery in the United States, to emphasize that African Americans resisted slavery, and to show how difficult the escape from slavery actually was. Freedom! was also made by conscientious people: MECC’s development team boasted decades of experience creating educational software, and they relied on subject experts and scholarly sources to ensure the game’s historical accuracy. Moreover, Freedom! was made in a compelling way: from a first person perspective, players had to rely on environmental clues and careful resource management in order to traverse a dangerous landscape filled with slave patrollers, dogs, and natural obstacles. Ultimately, however, Freedom! was a disaster. Shortly after its release in fall 1992, Freedom! encountered heavy criticism and protests for perpetuating racial stereotypes. In early 1993, MECC pulled Freedom! from store shelves and revoked the game’s license for schools across the country. The story of how Freedom! went from being a worthwhile idea to becoming the object of protest starts in 1983. That year saw the state of Minnesota convert MECC from a state owned nonprofit consortium into a profit-seeking corporation. Originally, MECC was created to provide computer access and software for students within the state of Minnesota. By the early 1980s, however, MECC began to sell licenses for their software to other states, who were eager to introduce computers to their students but lacked proven educational software to run on those machines. Seizing on the opportunity, the state of Minnesota cut MECC loose, and allowed it to pursue the burgeoning educational software market unfettered, so long as the company shared a portion of its profits with the state. It’s common to see educational games left out of popular accounts of the history of video games, but, in terms of both sales and influence, MECC was one of the most successful game companies of the 1980s. By the end of the decade, MECC dominated educational software in America, maintaining lucrative licensing deals with over 1/3 of the school districts in the country. It routinely raked in millions in profits thanks in large part to its sale of history titles such as The Oregon Trail, which sold 65 million copies across all of its iterations. When MECC was purchased from Minnesota by a venture capital firm in 1991, the company aggressively pursued the expansion of its history game portfolio. This expansion took a familiar form, with a series of games borrowing The Oregon Trail name (e.g. Africa Trail, Amazon Trail, Yukon Trail), and The Oregon Trail’s mechanics (i.e. roguelike, resource management, turn-based strategy, high difficulty). It was in this environment that Freedom! emerged. Given the context of MECC’s bottom line, it makes sense that Freedom! would be a run-based historical simulation. But why make a game about antebellum slavery? In their promotional materials for the game, MECC stated that Freedom! fit in with the company’s commitment “to providing inclusive instructional materials,” and their goal to “portray the experiences and perspectives of people from various cultures.” We can infer here that Freedom! represented a nod to the needs of MECC’s primary customer (i.e. school districts emphasizing multicultural education) as well as an awareness that many of MECC’s previous history titles, namely The Oregon Trail, portrayed a white colonial perspective of the past to the detriment of other groups. The key inspiration for Freedom!, however, didn’t come from financial necessity or even The Oregon Trail, but instead from a new living history event near MECC’s headquarters in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. In the late 1980s, an activist named Kamau Kambui began to run a live action role play event called Underground Railroad Reenactments (UGRRs) just outside of Minneapolis-St. Paul. These events placed participants in the role of fugitive slaves attempting to escape to freedom during the course of a night. You can learn more about Kambui and UGRRs from this recent and excellent write up in The New Yorker. At some point in the early 1990s, Kambui met MECC designer Rich Bergeron, who used Kambui’s UGRRs as the basis for the history and gameplay in Freedom!. Kambui became the game’s primary consultant, and, as The New Yorker notes, “his influence is clear in the emphasis on wilderness survival…period dialect and characters with a distinctly ‘African’ look.” Given this background, what is Freedom! actually like? You can play the game yourself, if you don’t mind downloading it from My Abandonware and running it on an emulator like AppleWin. If you can't be bothered, you can find a few let’s plays of the game on YouTube. Either way, what you’ll discover is a game that’s obviously drawing a great deal from The Oregon Trail, but will also leave you wishing for problems with dysentery and snake bites. Freedom! is brutally difficult. You start by choosing your origin point in the south, which can include Delaware, Maryland, or Virginia. The location of your plantation can determine how difficult and time consuming your playthrough will end up being, but regardless of where you decide to start you’ll feel incredible pressure throughout. Your journey to freedom will require you to overcome a near endless stream of slave patrollers, slave patrollers with dogs, slave patrollers with lanterns, water, and “rough” water (usually the ocean, so if you come across this you might as well turn and face whatever version of slave patroller is chasing you). On top of the constant threat presented by the game’s enemies and natural obstacles, you’re also tasked with managing your nutrition, health, and stamina as well as keeping track of which direction you’re headed. If your character doesn’t start with a compass, you’ll be left following the stars or looking at moss on trees to determine north. And as soon as you’re chased by slave patrollers, your character will run directionless until they are either recaptured or escape, in which case you’ll have to find north all over again. Whereas your white player character in Oregon Trail gets to follow a well worn path to the west at a leisurely pace without much beyond environmental hazards to worry about, the position of the black player characters in Freedom! make you feel as though you have to reinvent the wheel with a gun at your head every time you start a new escape. In the end, however, the controversy that enveloped Freedom! had nothing to do with the game’s incredible difficulty. Instead, most of the controversy related to characters and dialogue that the player encounters before the game even begins. After choosing your starting location, Freedom! presents you with a brief biography for your character and then gives you an opportunity to visit your plantation’s slave elders before starting your run. These elders essentially serve the same purpose as shop owners from Oregon Trail: a source for equipment, food, and useful tips about your upcoming journey north. These elders, however, speak in a dialect and their appearance (created using Apple II’s limited color palette) often resemble racist caricatures of African Americans. In addition to the plantation elders, the player character’s dialogue options often contain broken English, and their starting characteristics, which are randomized, can include an inability to read and write. This characteristic can greatly affect a playthrough as place names and written messages become illegible, making it that much more difficult for the player to complete the game. With regard to the use of era specific dialect in Freedom!, it’s clear that the development team were expecting at least some pushback from players. The game’s manual, which you can read here, makes special mention of dialect in a section on topics that instructors may want to discuss with their students ahead of playing the game for the first time. This section states that this dialect was included “to maintain a ‘feel’ for the historical period… was highly recommended by our consultant, an African American.” The manual also mentions that the game was play tested by a diverse group of teachers and students in the Twin Cities area before release. I talked with Clemson Professor Susanna Ashton, an expert on 19th century slave narratives, about the game's dialect. She felt that while the game's dialect was roughly accurate for published slave narratives from the 19th and 20th centuries, the dialect did not necessarily reflect how slaves actually spoke. Furthermore, the reconstructed dialect from these narratives could often have a racist effect even if there was no racist intent. The end result of this influence on Freedom! is a game—without instructor guidance—that can feel and look more like a minstrel show rather than an accurate historical simulation. While the developers were careful to include “cover your ass” language with reference to dialect, they were a bit more cavalier with the types of activities they recommended instructors use to supplement their class’ playthrough of the game. In particular, the manual encourages instructors to have their students “re-enact the institution of slavery” in the classroom, with some students roleplaying as slaveowners and the others roleplaying as slaves. The developers, however, merely recommended that instructors make sure to not let “all the white children be ‘owners’ and all black children or children of color be ‘slaves.’” Reading the manual for Freedom! reveals both the earnestness of the developers and their naivete. They are convinced of the importance and potential benefits of their game, but they are also hopeful that the game will only be played in an appropriate setting with instructor guidance. In practice, few players of Freedom! ever played with an instructor, let alone read the manual. This issue manifested itself first at Henry P. Fieler Elementary School in Merrillville, Indiana outside of Chicago. At Fieler, Freedom! was added to “the school’s open computer lab, offered as something students could explore with their free time. No curriculum was attached.” Soon after, a group of African American parents complained to teachers and then to MECC directly that Freedom! was offensive and “Nintendoized” slavery. In particular, the game’s use of dialect and general depiction of blacks “exposed their children to ridicule.” For players of Freedom!, playing the digital past was too often an excuse to resurrect it in real life. The school’s superintendent added that the game trivialized “the pain and suffering these folks went through.” As one parent succinctly put it, “slavery was not a game in our history.” After meeting with the parent group at Fieler Elementary and a representative of the NAACP, MECC pulled the game from stores, and requested customers either return the game to MECC or destroy their copy. An updated version of the game was never released. Freedom! and the controversy surrounding it had a profound effect on MECC’s subsequent development process. In 1994, MECC hired an outside firm to run a focus group for a project called Africa Trek (eventually retitled, unsurprisingly, Africa Trail), which was centered around a 12,000 mile bike journey from north to south Africa. The focus group’s documentation, available at the Strong Library, explicitly references the “adverse public and administrative reaction” to Freedom!, and recommended that Africa Trek should not be marketed “as a way to ‘discover your roots.’” Moreover, the focus group panel strongly advised that “development management should obtain consumer and teacher feedback … as a disaster check” before publishing. As one focus group member summarized, “whenever you try to recreate history, there’s a lot of hostility that comes out.” Like Gone with the Wind, Freedom! is an example of a work of historical fiction engendering and perpetuating harmful racial stereotypes. Yet MECC’s removal of Freedom! from shelves and computer labs means that the game and the criticism of it have largely been forgotten. MECC had the capability to address the game’s issues, but Freedom! was never rereleased. Did it deserve a second chance? When considering this question, it’s important to study the history of The Oregon Trail game. Originally created as a supplemental lesson for Don Rawitsch’s junior high history course in 1971, The Oregon Trail game famously debuted without mention of Native Americans, or the wider racial and ethnic implications of westward expansion. Yet as the decades past, and the game’s popularity grew, new versions were created that addressed not only the game’s mechanical shortcomings but many of its worst historical faults as well. To a large extent, The Oregon Trail was iterated out of controversy. Freedom! never got that opportunity. But maybe it should have. Intent matters here. Gone with the Wind was made to romanticize a nonexistent past. Freedom! was made to educate players on an important, and depressingly under-taught topic. To a certain extent, the game’s failures were part and parcel of how little African American history was taught in schools to begin with. As one Henry P. Fieler parent argued in 1992, “What I’d like to see is an African-American curriculum in the school system period, before a slavery game can be used as an educational tool.” In reading the original criticism of Freedom!, there’s a case to be made that parent concerns in 1992-93 related not just to the game’s depiction of black Americans, but also the fact that this depiction was in a game to begin with. Freedom! may have been an educational game, but it was released right in the middle of one of America’s great, periodic hysterias about games in general, thanks to titles like Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, and Wolfenstein 3D. While America’s opinion on games and gaming have improved since the early 1990s, recent events in Minnesota and elsewhere have shown that not much has changed with education on topics like slavery and reconstruction since Freedom! was released. This problem is a big reason why educators continue to awkwardly and often disastrously attempt their own classroom roleplay games centered around antebellum slavery. They look to games and gaming as a way to make up for failures with textbooks and traditional instruction. One of the better examples of this work is the publicly funded Mission US game Flight to Freedom, a flash game that follows a slave’s escape to freedom, but also deftly updates the character’s spoken language to avoid the controversies with dialect found in Freedom!. Popular game developers, for their part, are eager to engage with the past, but only if the history is profitable and they can find cover for mistakes behind nebulous, catchall disclaimers (i.e. this game was “designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team…”). Maybe historical knowledge—real historical knowledge that could change society—can’t exist in popular games. Maybe it can’t even exist in educational or serious games. Maybe society has to change first: games can be an educational supplement, but there has to be something to supplement. The story of Freedom! highlights how at once the game's message was absolutely necessary, but by itself was also insufficient to its purpose. Even an experienced team of developers relying on expert knowledge published a game that had to be pulled from the shelves. There's an irony here. Jacqueline Stewart’s introduction for Gone with the Wind on HBO Max argues that the problematic film should remain available because it shines a light on the racial inequalities that existed at the time of its production and the inequalities that continue to this day. The same can be said of titles like the original Oregon Trail, where the absence of indigenous people and slavery can be used to criticize the game as well as entrenched narratives of westward expansion. In the right hands, even badly flawed games and toxic works of art can still be used to teach history. But that history will still often be taught in relation to the white mythmaking and stereotyping that erased and reduced marginalized people. Freedom!, which (however imperfectly) attempted to center the experience of fleeing slaves and highlight the horrors of the antebellum United States, remains a little-seen historical curiosity. http://diariozombie.ar/the-oregon-trail-studio-made-a-game-about-slavery-then-parents-saw-it/

Sanjay Kumar, CEO & MD, Elior India - India's Transformational Leaders 2019
Sanjay Kumar, CEO & MD, Elior India - India's Transformational Leaders 2019
Over the years, my experience across different industry sectors such as Consumer Durables, Oil and Gas, Technology and Food services has tremendously impacted the decisions I make today.
My decision-making process has been largely influenced by a few key elements. To begin with, one must identify the type of the market, then go on to pinpoint the areas of operation in said market. Developing an understanding of the working of the organisation and its culture is vital. Next, a strategy should be created for marketing the product or service. One must also develop a keen understanding of the target audience, what they require, and then come up with a clear cut procedure on how to sell the product while keeping in mind the resource needs for both people and capital. An accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career? My career revolves around driving two key business factors- turning around existing businesses, and setting up new businesses. Personally, I think convincing the Elior board to invest in India, and then being able to fully set up the business in India, is one of my proudest achievements. Since this was Elior’s first entry into India, I had to identify suitable acquisition targets. Most of these acquisitions were completed as scheduled and integration was planned as per the submissions to the shareholders. Over the next 2 years, the business objectives required for the market entry was achieved. This is quite rare since it is difficult for large companies to achieve their market entry objectives in India due to the existence of various complexities. Therefore, given the difficult nature of the market, it was quite challenging to convince a 7 billion dollar French conglomerate company to invest in India through acquisition driven strategies, and then grow the business to meet the shareholders’ objectives and deliver the returns expected by them. How do you integrate corporate philanthropy or corporate social responsibility as a part of your business strategies? The Elior Group and I believe that corporate social responsibility in our business should be sustainable as well as a contributing factor to the society and the environment that we operate in. The key drivers for us in India has been to reduce food wastage and to ensure that the practices we follow in the process of procurement and production are the best in the country. While our peers in the industry follow a different strategy when it comes to procuring agricultural produce, at Elior we follow sustainable methods to gather agricultural produce. In regard to reducing food wastage, we pride ourselves in having the technology and processes to monitor as well as consistently predict consumption levels that help reduce the wastage created due to improper planning and forecasting.
Sanjay Kumar, CEO & MD, Elior India - India's Transformational Leaders 2019 What has been your driving force or philosophy in life? To give everything that you do, your best. So, if something unexpected happens, you won’t have to look back or think “I could have tried harder.” What are the other philanthropic works you are involved in? On a personal level, I support a very commendable and charitable organisation called Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. It is involved with the education of poor children in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition? Success is the ability to cope with failure. I try to measure up to this by living through my failures just as I have been able to celebrate my successes. We are constantly making things better faster smarter and less expensive. In other words, we strive to do more with less. Tell us about a recent project or solution that you have made that is smarter and faster or less expensive. There are several initiatives being implemented in our enterprise in relevance to that category. Our entire human resource and attendance tracking system for four thousand employees are on a biometric system which is linked to a human resource management system. This allows us to process payroll without any human intervention or manual attendance keeping. The second initiative that we have introduced is the first of its kind in the food services industry. We have developed our very own technology platform that allows our guests to view the menus online, make selections and place their orders. This has reduced confusion and order misplacements drastically. It also helps us understand consumer tastes and preferences better; allowing us to tailor our menus to suit the palate of different consumers and thereby reduce wastage. Through this technology, we have been able to predict the amount of consumption more accurately. We can also create diverse menus digitally, which has enabled consistency in the recipes we create. This will also ensure that consumers get the value for the price they pay. In addition, this technology is linked to our backend inventory management system that enables us to reduce the likelihood of perishable items that we hold in the inventory. What is the most significant aspect of leadership? I think that the ability to deal with failure is the most important aspect for any leader. A leader has to accept that they cannot be right all the time. Your perception of an empowered society, how far can your organisation contribute to the same? An empowered society, to me, is one that recognises the rights of all its members. I think there is an evolution underway currently in the foodservice industry. An evolution in which more importance and recognition is being given to the rights of consumers, the rights of service providers and, most importantly, the rights to all those who help produce the raw materials. Farmers need to be respected and understood as a crucial part of the food production industry. They act as sustenance to the well-being of all the other aspects within the industry. One thing that you want to change and one thing you want to retain in your industry The one thing I would want to change in the industry is its attitude towards safety, which lacks in comparison to most other developing and developed markets. The one thing I would wish to retain is the importance we give to fresh food. In India, we love to eat our food fresh. So, food continues to be made and consumed on the same day which drastically reduces our dependence on frozen food in comparison to the western world. One thing you have to let go as an entrepreneur or leader? Ans: The thought that “I have the ability to control all the events around me.” Whom do you owe your success to? Well, there is a list of leaders whom I looked up to right from the beginning. To name a few- S.L Ghoklani, former managing director of Eureka Forbes, is somebody who I learned a lot from. Next would be Shell, who has an inspirational leader called Bruce Rosengarten. Then, there is Harry Brecklemans, who was one of my supervisors in a strategy driven endeavour I pursued in the recent past. I dedicate my growth as a leader to Phillipe Salle, who was the previous CEO of Altran. I also owe it to my current supervisor – Phillipe Guillemot, Elior Group CEO whose extraordinary leadership in following and ensuring that the processes, the focus, and the governance is in line with the best organisations of the world. The best thing about your job Every day is different. A message from you to all the future entrepreneur and leaders The earlier you prepare for failure, the better are your chances of success. About Sanjay Kumar MD and CEO of Elior India, a subsidiary of France based Elior Group and India’s largest standalone food services company.

It’s been about 13 generations considering that Homer envisioned a mythical floating metropolis surrounding by “unbreakable bronze.” The idea has typically remained the province of fantasy due to the fact then – right up until past thirty day period.
In April, the United Nations hosted a roundtable to focus on a proposal for a floating neighborhood called Oceanix Town that could stand up to floods, tsunamis, and Class 5 hurricanes. The project, which hails from architect Bjarke Ingels and the design business Oceanix, is made up of a selection of hexagonal platforms that mix to variety 6 villages, each with all-around 1,800 inhabitants.
The notion arose from a wish to deal with soaring sea ranges and land constraints in big towns. In a statement at the roundtable, UN Deputy Secretary-Standard Amina Mohammed referred to as the floating metropolis “part of our new arsenal of tools” to address troubles like poverty, climate adjust, ailment outbreaks, and the mass actions of migrants and refugees.

“This is not a luxury idea. It’s an vital principle,” Thomas Goreau, the president of the World Coral Reef Alliance, claimed at the roundtable.
That is a change from the way designers and builders considered about floating towns in former decades. As a substitute of a utopian eyesight of libertarian societies without having taxes or government regulation, the plan of a floating city nowadays is rising as a useful remedy to the world’s most pressing issues – and it is closer than at any time to acquiring crafted.
The dream of floating communities
Floating towns attract inspiration from a time-honored structure, the houseboat, which has developed from shabby buildings crafted on rafts to hurricane-resistant fortresses and light, prefabricated homes that can be assembled in a working day.
In the Netherlands, floating houses have come to be a ubiquitous resolution to flooding. The country has even experimented with floating apartment complexes and dairy farms that bob on the drinking water.
But making an overall floating city remains an unparalleled challenge.
For the most aspect, all those who have tried the feat have aimed to develop autonomous societies that work independently of govt.
In the early 1970s, luxury serious-estate mogul Michael Oliver tried to create a floating island off the coastline of Tonga in get to produce his personal self-sufficient modern society. The prepared community, which he identified as the Republic of Minerva, was meant to have its have currency and do absent with taxes and welfare. But the challenge was squashed by the King of Tonga, who mentioned his country presently possessed the land.

The principle of a floating utopia didn’t die there, though. In 2008, political theorist Patri Friedman teamed up with PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel to variety the Seasteading Institute, a think tank that advocates for the design of floating metropolitan areas. Like Oliver, Friedman and Thiel subscribe to the libertarian ideology that flexibility can be achieved by getting rid of oneself from the strictures of govt.
“Our purpose is to optimize entrepreneurial liberty to make blue work to welcome anybody to the Up coming New Earth,” the organization’s web page reads. “We are credentialed, competent, pragmatic idealists who plan to … make the first nations not to aggress in opposition to any persons.”
Much like Alpahabet’s endeavours to create a higher-tech town in Toronto, the Seasteading Institute sights floating cities as tests beds for new ideas. Amid the organization’s “eight moral imperatives” are options to enrich the very poor, cleanse the atmosphere, produce autonomous electrical power, and reside in balance with mother nature.
These priorities are not unlike those people of Oceanix Metropolis. At the UN roundtable, the designers explained their prepare to create an autonomous energy source for the community, make refreshing h2o sustainably onsite, and attain zero squander.
Alternatively of substantial-emitting cars or trucks, Oceanix Metropolis would allot house for driverless autos and experiment with new systems this kind of as drone deliveries and pneumatic trash tubes, they stated. Beneath the surface area of the drinking water, aquaponic methods would use fish waste to aid fertilize plants, even though vertical farms would deliver year-spherical develop.
“We’re striving towards the greatest degree of autonomy,” Ingels explained to Defence On the web.
But Oceanix City would be self-adequate with out being thoroughly impartial

The layout for Oceanix City phone calls for the floating structures to be bolstered by Biorock – a material with a limestone coating that is 3 times more challenging than concrete, but can still be produced to float – and moored to the ocean ground. They could be towed to safer locations in the celebration of a catastrophe.
Even though the metropolis however wants funding, the style and design proposal so far serves as a variety of blueprint for courageous buyers.
“I see this, in several methods, as our Apollo 10 gown rehearsal,” claimed Victor Kisob, the deputy executive director of the UN Human Settlement Programme.
But there are, of system, downsides to creating a group at sea. For one, floating-city initiatives may possibly discover it tricky to secure approval from nearby governments.
Right after signing an arrangement with French Polynesia in 2016 to make a floating metropolis off the coast of Tahiti, for case in point, the Seasteading Institute learned last calendar year that the federal government would not be renewing the deal. In the time considering the fact that the settlement was announced, Tahitian locals had grown cautious of a billionaire-backed business taking more than close by land. The government at some point issued a notice on Facebook expressing the offer was non-binding.
That general public wariness reveals a different significant obstacle for the development of floating towns: that the communities could grow to be isolated enclaves for the extremely-rich.
Oceanix CEO Marc Collins is identified to steer clear of that situation. Although presenting his eyesight at the UN, Collins painted floating towns as a option to the homelessness crisis in key towns.
In his hometown of French Polynesia, Collins said, small-earnings inhabitants are spending much more for each square foot than their wealthy neighbors. By developing a floating local community that serves as “an extension” of an current town, Collins hopes to alleviate housing constraints induced by expanding populations and a absence of offered land.
Contrary to Michael Oliver’s vision for his autonomous island, Oceanix Town could be designed and operated within a local government’s jurisdiction – a variation that could hold the new proposal from languishing as a collection of renderings.
Ingels phone calls his eyesight for the venture “utopian pragmatism,” this means that grand style feats can be achieved in concrete, practical strategies.
“Everybody on the group really needs to get this developed,” Collins advised the UN. “We’re not just theorizing.”
