I didn't properly entertain shadowgast as a ship until the 90s because I flew through the Xhorhas/Angel of Irons arcs, but like, no one was unaware of what was happening beforehand. The entire shipping contingent's vibe was "If these two assholes could stop manipulating each other for ten seconds maybe they'd realize there's something here." In character they were both blatantly justifying all of their interactions like "We're mutually using each other, there are no feelings here, this is just an arrangement and nothing else, it's fine :)."

As this was developing everyone was very aware that that was the dynamic. It was the idea that maybe an actual healthy relationship was a real possibility here that took way longer to establish.
