The more a dog trains in an area, the more comfortable they often become there. I know this. But it's still really cool to see.

The weather was decent so I took Forte to the Dam. We played with the tug for a bit but he was mentally checked out from me. Which I expected because it's been a while since he's been in that kind of environment. So I let him take it in, sniff around, and didn't ask much from him.

I rewarded checks in but other than that I just let him suss things out for himself. It was busier than I thought it would be with lots of other people, dogs, kids kicking around soccer balls, scooters, people rollerblading, etc.

The only time I asked him to focus was when we were up on the Dam and had to pass by dogs that were either staring too hard at him or actually barking and pulling towards him. He happily fell into a casual heel and soon as we were clear of them I released him.

We spent about two hours just exploring there with Forte getting to be a dog.

Afterwards we stopped at the grocery store. I put on his vest and he hopped out of the car and immediately fell into step beside me. He's pretty familiar with the grocery store at this point and I never even needed to pick up the leash (I use a hands free one, he wasn't off leash).

And aside from asking him to lay down while checking out, I didn't use any cues at all. He is comfortable in the store and knows what's expected of him.

And it really is so cool to watch him go from a dog who is all over the place checking out the environment to focused service dog who is working and knows it.

What techniques did you use for training a consistent heal? My dog knows to not pull and knows how to heel but doesnt like to stay in a heel for long which is normally fine but if were walking in a store or something I would like him to heel more

There can be a lot of reasons for leaving a heel position, knowing what’s causing them to end the behaviour will likely help you sort out a good training plan.

With my dogs here’s what I focused on:

A solid release cue, ensuring they had a proper understanding of the behaviour and that the behaviour should continue until a release cue is given. This makes it easier for my dogs to understand what can signal the behaviour to end (as opposed to a distraction causing the behaviour to end).

Comfort, if the environment is scary or threatening I don’t expect my animals to ignore that feeling and do what they’re told anyways. If something causes them to need to investigate to feel safe they absolutely leave heel on their own accord to do so. Yeah in the moment it might feel frustrating but next time around they’ll be more comfortable with the thing that startled them and they’ll be more likely to be comfortable following cues. Additionally if a dog is too stressed to offer a heel instead of fighting a losing battle trying to force it to happen I just change my plans that day, do a full slow lap around the store to let them sniff it out and get their bearings then see if I can get a functional heel to be able to shop or not after that.

Reinforcement history/ duration/ proofing, practice the expected durations in a neutral context. Duration is HARD, asking for duration in an extremely distracting environment is Harder. Make sure they understand how to do the behaviour for your expected period of time in an easier environment first. Or provide a lot of breaks throughout your trip so it’s not one massively long heel. Additionally I’d practice heeling around distractions you expect to see, use shopping carts in the parking lot, have a friend help you out, walking by new smells (I like to practice this when we bring home groceries, heel past the full sniffy shopping bags before being released to go sniff them all). Do trips specifically for training so you can be focused on the task at hand and not held to an obligatory amount of time to be there. This may mean you walk back and forth outside, hop inside and immediately go back out. You just start where they’re at and gradually build from there so they can clearly see what behaviours you want in that context.

Boredom, I initially had a heck of a time getting duration on Yoshis heel because she got bored with the simple task. For her changing my speed as we walked, teaching her more precise ways to turn left and right, and a handful of fun cues that can be asked for while moving made heeling more enjoyable and creates a nice behaviour chain. Now instead of heel-reward it can be heel-switch-middle-circle-back up-left turn pivot-downstay-medical alert-reward there’s a lot of fun “spur of the moment” cues that keep her more engaged and eagerly looking for the next Job To Do.

Context and expectations. I only use heel for safety, navigating crowds, tight spaces. It’s unrealistic to want the average dog to hold a pin tight heel in most circumstances. It’s not comfortable, it inhibits normal social movement cues, it’s slow, it’s not really the most mentally enriching and joyous experience long-term. I ask Yoshi to heel in hardware stores for fun games, she likes the activity, and finds joy in having A Job when we’re doing boring slow moving shopping that would otherwise be frustrating stop-and-go for her. Sham on the other hand likes slow movement and is insecure in new spaces so I don’t ask him to heel, he wanders and sniffs and does what’s fun for him, I’ll ask for short heel bursts if we’re passing people, need to tuck out of the way, or he’s comfortable enough for some fun practice in a new environment. If I ask him to heel for long periods he gets stressed because he can’t freely navigate the environment. Heeling isn’t always the best choice for every dog!

Lastly, outlets for natural behaviours. Making sure they get a good walk in prior to the trip can be helpful. Making sure they run out excess energy and get their sniffing needs fulfilled, will make it less likely that they’ll be overstimulated by the new environment and wanting to go do everything else. A lot easier to focus when you aren’t restless and pent-up. To add to this I usually do a little mental state check before heading out to do a trip to further set us up for success. If I can’t get the behaviours I’d like to see at home then I’m certainly not going to be able to get them in the store.
