Okay time for the PBS Kids essay
Read it under the cut!
:readmore:
In 1968, before there was PBS Kids proper, there was Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. While it came several decades before the children’s block, it laid the foundation for the themes and values present in every facet of the network’s history.
Mr. Roger famously hated children’s programming at the time. To him, it all was droll and useless. But he didn’t dissuade the medium entirely— he saw potential. Potential that led to a few smaller television jobs, and eventually the creation of Mr. Roger’s neighborhood.
Rogers didn’t invent educational TV for children, but he did perfect it. He poured real heart and soul into probably the most sincere, heartfelt program in history.
Honestly, he could have his own essay. The more things you learn about the real man of Mr. Rogers, the more you’ll like him.
Anyway, the biggest thing that makes PBS different is the fact that it earns money through grants, fundraisers, and private donors— not through sponsorships and merchandise sales. This way, PBS Kids can push programming that it feels is important, rather than programming that merely sells well.
This also means PBS is less afraid of pushing social boundaries. Money doesn’t go away when their shows become subjects of debate— and Mr. Rogers took full advantage of this.
For context, this was 1969. The Jim Crow era had just barely, barely ended. Pool segregation was still very much legal.
youtube
Mr. Rogers sharing a pool and a towel with the Black Mr. Clemmons was a pretty big deal at the time— especially on a show made for children.
Rogers was far from the untouchable sacred cow of today. When he was alive, he had a large number of detractors. Let’s just say that scene didn’t fly nicely by everyone.
Just one year after the debut of Mr. Roger’s came Sesame Street.
While Mr. Roger’s was made for all children, Sesame Street had the explicit goal of supplementing the education of underserved communities— especially inner-city Black (and later Latino) children.
While it was made to be accessible to children of all races and income levels, they definitely went the extra mile to make it something special for inner-city Black and Brown kids. (Why do you think it it’s “Sesame Street” and not “Sesame Cul-de-Sac”?)
At the time, a wholesome, sweet show set in a brownstone street was practically unheard of.
Jon Stone, the casting director, deliberately sought to make the cast as rich with color as he possibly could, bringing on a huge amount of Black talent such as Loretta Long, Matt Robinson, and Kevin Clash, as well as featuring Black celebrities as guest stars. Later, the show would expand its horizons, bringing on actors from Latino, Asian, Native American, and many more backgrounds.
White actors were and still are a minority on show.
In addition to letters and numbers, the purpose of Sesame Street is clear: make kids of color know that they’re smart, beautiful, and loved.
youtube
It doesn’t get more explicit than this.
I want to point out this comment because it’s funny

You’re telling me this bitch isn’t Hispanic???

Anyway, these two were followed up by Reading Rainbow in 1983. And guess what?

That’s right. Non-white focus.
These three shows, (along with other, lesser-known programs like Lamb-Chops Play Along, Newton’s Apple, and Shining Times Station (who featured Ringo Starr himself?? seriously how did that happen and why does no one talk about it) and some other nostalgic favorites like Bill Nye the Science guy, The Magic Schoolbus, Arthur, and Thomas the Tank Engine) aired on the new PTV block, which evolved into PBS Kids in 1999, bringing along Between the Lions, Dragon Tales, and many more.
Arthur is another stand-out that I’d like to talk about— it doesn’t have the same racial focus of Sesame Street, but it does focus on different income levels. The characters have various housing situations, from apartments to mansions to no home at all.
It also takes cues from Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s in regards to talking about tough topics, though as Arthur has a slightly older target audience, it discusses things through stories rather than talking directly to the audience.
Cancer, religion, workplace discrimination, along with current (at the time) events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina are all discussed on the show.
Another big focus on Arthur is disability. For once, they don’t stick a character in a wheelchair and then pretend he’s not in a wheelchair. A striking number of major characters either develop or get diagnosed with physical disabilities and/or neurodivergences, such as asthma, severe food allergies, and dyslexia, and they deal with them in very realistic ways.
A handful of minor characters have more obvious disabilities, and THANK GOD they go beyond the trite messaging of “disabled people can do everything abled people can do! everyone clap now!”
One episode in particular has the awesome message of “holy shit stop trying to help me all the time— it’s patronizing as fuck. I can get around just fine without you stepping on eggshells and trying to be the hero all the fucking time”
There are sooo many other shows I could talk about, but I can’t write about them all. I’m definitely gonna point out some more standout ones, though.
Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat
Created by Chinese-American woman Amy Tang

Dragonfly TV
Features a multitude of female and non-white scientists to foster an interest in science with kids in those groups

Maya & Miguel
One of the network’s first Hispanic-led shows

SciGirls
I shouldn’t have to explain what the goal of this one was.

Molly of Denali
When was the last time you saw a show that treated Native Americans as people? Much less a children’s show? 90% of the cast is Athabascan, and the show revolves around Athabascan culture, not shying away from topics like boarding schools and modern-day racism. Most of the writers are also Athabascan, and the show even has an official Gwich’in dub!

It’s this commitment to real, authentic social justice that makes PBS Kids so much different from its competitors. Could you imagine the Paw Patrol dog looking at the camera and earnestly discussing what happened to George Floyd? I don’t think so— but Arthur talked specifically about it, Sesame Street did an hour long special about race in general, and the network itself made a 30 minute special.
youtube
Disney Jr. could never. (Other than trying to teach colorblindness, of course.)
I’m gonna have to cut this into two parts, since I just hit the image limit

I found myself thinking about Gargoyles (the Disney cartoon) and how much I loved it and Keith David's performance as Goliath. And I realized that I think Goliath was my first real encounter with non-toxic masculinity as a young kid.
I had seen other positive male role models on TV before such Mr. Rogers, the many men on Sesame Street and LaVar Burton in both Reading Rainbow and Star Trek (I was much too young for Star Trek but loved it all the same). But Goliath left an impression on me like few other male characters have.
Goliath embodied so many traits that I was taught as part of "being a man." He was strong. He was tough. He was a leader among men (gargoyles?). He even had a chiseled jaw and impressive physique. But what I remember most is from the very first episode is he never hid or suppressed his emotions.
His mournful wail after believing that Demona, the love of his life, was dead is burned into my memory. This was a man who felt things and showed it. He was never shamed for showing his emotions either. No one told him to stuff it down. Instead, it was part of him that was warmly accepted and treated as normal.
And Goliath didn't just show emotion when he was upset either (the only socially acceptable time for a man to show any emotion (as long as it was anger). He was tender and loving with Demona. He was kind to his peers. He would laugh with his allies but be fierce to his enemies. He was openly fearful of humans after being trapped and feared anything happening to his people. Yet he was never admonished nor shamed for any of it. In fact, others wanted to emulate Goliath and be like him.
I truly have to credit the writing of the character as well as the amazing acting behind it. We need more characters who are strong and mighty and feel their emotions. We need more examples of strength coming from feeling and showing your emotions, rather than them being showed either at odds or mutually exclusive.

In your opinion, what's the darkest thing in Poptropica?
Oh... wow. You know, some people might be surprised at some of the dark stuff that's happened/implied throughout the franchise. And from such an innocent looking world too :)
I guess I'll make a list of some stuff that stands out to me:
24 Carrot Island
The 4 children were kidnapped and brainwashed by Dr. Hare probably for months.
Astro-Knights Island
Mordred almost died in a crash, and had to replace half of his body with robotics.
Mordred kidnapped the princess because he wanted to marry her. And her parents most likely thought they were never going to see her again, since they had no way of going after her.
Counterfeit Island
It's implied that Black Widow was gonna torture the player in order to get answers.

Reality TV Island/Wild Safari Island
Villains allowed to be on reality tv… and being treated as celebrities... WHAT.
Skullduggery Island
Captain Crawfish probably killed a lot of people. Cause… pirate.

Steamworks Island
The entire backstory of this island: the people were doing experiments on plants, when the plants mutated and tried to kill them. The only way they could survive is by freezing themselves.
Captain Ziggs sacrificed himself to hold off the Plant Monsters. Mayor Crumb must be feeling pretty depressed now that she's free and forced to live without him.

Red Dragon Island
The Shogun being a pretty terrifying tyrant.
Shrink Ray Island
POV: you're an elementary school student and your teacher's star pupil. You trust him, because he's a nice teacher. And then he goes crazy and kidnaps you.
Mr. Silva threatens to shrink CJ and the player to the point where they can't be seen by anyone, which is kinda dark honestly.
Blimp Adventure
Dr. Cumulo Nimbus sets fire to the rain to all the islands.
Game Show Island
Robots take over and enslave humanity.
Ghost Story Island
A really depressing murder mystery/ weird love triangle story that involves several character's deaths.
S.O.S Island
The ship sinks and everyone inside almost dies. Also a child.
Vampire's Curse Island
Count Bram outlives his wife, and goes crazy. And he kidnaps a child due to insanity.
Cactus von Garlic has killed many vampires. But not all vampires in Poptropica are evil (if Haunted House is any indication).
Twisted Thicket Island
The forest creatures turning into stone. I'm not 100% sure if they're still alive in there or not...
Poptropolis Games Island
The island sinks back into the ocean, with people still on it. Some of the ancient islanders are waterlogged (but still alive, for some reason).
Lunar Colony Island (Book)
The PASE workers are oddly sociopathic to Glen John's situation, only caring about Glen helping them. Glen is 13 btw.
Super Villain Island
Zeus almost winning. He blew up the world for no reason. Also, there's something really scary about the way he blew up his own island.
Zomberry Island
Zombie apocalypse.
Virus Hunter Island
A pandemic almost happened.
Monster Carnival Island
Ringmaster Raven's backstory: Pretty messed up.
Edgar is an orphan who ran away and joined the carnival. He put a lot of trust in the Ringmaster and seemed pretty happy… and then the Ringmaster hypnotizes him and uses him for his scheme. Pretty messed up.
Survival Island
Myron Van Buren. Enough said.
Mission Atlantis Island
The alien was trapped underwater for years and died.
PoptropiCon Island
Omegon taking over the convention center, and turning the people into Hench-Bots.
Arabian Nights Island
Scheherazade attempted to steal the player's soul… what the heck.
Graphic Novels
The kids almost died… several times. (A Saber tooth tiger and polar bear almost maul them, they almost fall to their deaths, they almost freeze to death, they are almost stabbed to death by Lieutenant Rogers, they almost got erased from history on the Ancient Egypt Island, they almost burned alive in a volcano eruption, etc)
The ancient Egyptians are erased from one timeline, and a bunch of people on earth died... and it's unknown if they were brought back, or what.
When Spencer Albright is murdered, Jonas is so overcome with grief that he completely loses it and becomes murderous like Octavian. Jonas is 18-20 btw.
The backstories for the main characters (Octavian is forced to let Paulla die, Mya's mom abruptly dies and she goes through depression, Oliver’s dad walks out on the family).
Octavian's fate at the end is this: he accidentally jumped through the portal before the universe he wanted to go to fully formed. Because of this, he jumped into the in-between point of universes, and was split into an infinite amount of versions of himself. Sounds complicated, but is incredibly messed up.
Mya was seriously considering leaving her own timeline, even though she would be leaving her family and friends behind. Whether or not she knew this is unknown, but if she did... kinda messed up.
And… that's it. No more dark things that stick out to me after that. Probably because after this, they fired the writer who was responsible for most of the dark undertones in the franchise. OOPS!!! >:(
I think the darkest stuff comes from Monster Carnival, Survival, and the graphic novels.

As a extension of the last question, how about the Afton Family's favourite TV shows of the era? Well, give or take William, as I highly doubt he looks any higher on them as he does films or games...
You'd be correct, he also does not like watching television unless he's asked to. But besides William being a total dud, let's get on with the rest of them! (Also, sorry for the late response!)
Okay I'm gonna start with Evan again, mostly because he's the most fun to write about. He of course really likes Fredbear and Friends (according to his father, the show was made solely in his honor, this is half true.) But besides the fictional show, he loved a lot of non fictional ones too! Particularly animated shows (because duh, this is Evan!) I can't really think of a lot of popular cartoons in 70s to early 80s cartoons, a few I can think of off the top of my head are maybe Hanna Barbera shows? And Warner Bros stuff as well. He probably isn't too interested in any live actions shows (can't blame him, they're usually so corny 😭😭) with the exception of Sesame Street and maybe Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood (sort of...any Muppet bigger than Elmo kinda freaked him out)
Now on with Elizabeth, I think perhaps Bosco and Calliope would be in her favorites (I think the main characters being red heads helps...) and I'd like to think she also watched animated TV shows like Josie and The Pussycats (maybe her and Charlie would role-play the girls 💀 like how elementary kids would roleplay Bratz or something) and I know these shows didn't come out when she was alive, but I can see her being a Rainbow Brite and MLP girl. Like come on!! And for live action...idk, Fraggle Rock I guess, I dunno anyone who still remembers that show lmao
For Pre-Bite Mike (I'm just now noticing it rhymes, makes him sound like a rapper) I think he wouldn't think that much of animated TV shows anymore since he was a teenage boy, so I think he'd lean more towards live action stuff since it was more mature. Sure he probably did watch TV shows meant for his age but I personally think he'd just lie to his friends and would actually just watch soap operas at home instead 😭😭 The reason he got into the Immortal And The Restless is cause his mom would probably watch it a lot too. Other soap operas from the 70s-80s he liked were probably Angels, The Young and The Restless (yes, the actual TV show that inspired the FNAF parody lmao), and General Hospital, and maybe a few other ones, but I can't be flooding my Google feed with random 60s and 70s and 80s medias anymore!
And finally for Clara, she of course still liked Drama and Soap Opera shows, in fact most of what Mike enjoys is probably stuff she did. They'd watch some stuff together and make commentaries on it lmao.

Man, CGI has really ruined Hollywood.
I've said how much I hate CGI in the past. How at this point I can't see the movie but just CGI blobs, or how about the fact that CGI takes away jobs like Make-up artists and costume design? "Hey if the computer can do it, why bother to wear the costume at all?" This is why corporations now turned to AI, and it's backfiring.
So why even bring this up? This summer I decided to watch Young Indiana Jones Chronicles again. I watched the first half of volume one, so far the first four adventures follow 10 year old Indiana Jones as he travels the world with his parents and tutor. Eventually the series tackles what happened to Indy's mother and the bitter relationship between father and son but as for right now Professor Jones is traveling and lecturing. This series was released in 1992 and as a kid when this series was released I didn't miss an episode, it was one of my favorite shows - why the fucking hell is Hollywood stupid now? This isn't some crummy nostalgia trip because I have the set and watch it on occasion, in the last 20 years Hollywood has given us reboots and self inserts, I'm not entertained watching someone's fan fiction play out.
This show starts off with a monologue explaining how Indy got to be an adventurous kid, and how he ended up with his dog. It then slides into how the family started their trip around the world - their house is a Victorian style house so you know the rest of this will be shot on location. Even as a kid I loved the location shots and costumes, I wanted to go back in time and wear Mrs. Jones clothes, I thought she was so pretty.

Okay now first of all, Professor Jones. George Lucas had to know after releasing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, and having Sean Connery as Indy's father, that wasn't going to be easy. The actor, Lloyd Owen, not only has the look but his acting style follows Mr. Connery. Right down to saying "Junior!" almost exact.
Shoot on location or green screen? I understand budget, but if you were given the money to show off the beauty of a country, why destroy it with computer generation?

I mean even the silent film Phantom of the Opera, that music hall set was designed using sketches. People thought that scene was filmed in an actual music hall. Lucas filmed on location in several episodes, using props that fit the time period, with 10 year old Indy the journey began in 1909.
Props and costumes really make a difference in transporting the audience back in time.

But even at that, through the series Indy meets several historical figures. Some show up several times like T. E. Lawrence and Howard Carter, so of course they had to look like the person they were portraying but what about Sigmund Freud? Tolstoy? Even a young Norman Rockwell?

This is the first episode, Carter and T. E. Lawrence are at a digsite. The crafty thing about Lucas is the characters mention King Tut so yeah you're gonna see these guys again

Here's a young Norman Rockwell

Here's Puccini, the opera composer who gave us Madame Butterfly. I watched the episode last night and didn't realize just how much it showed the actual Puccini - in the episode he went after Indy's mom, the real Puccini was a womanizer so there was no holding back

You can say I'm nostalgic and defend 2024 Hollywood but look at Who Framed Roger Rabbit that was released in 1988

Or how about Dick Tracy, released in 1990

Then there's Rocketeer in 1991

And then the same year that Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was released to TV, there was Newsies - 1992

Can we go back to movies and TV shows that look like the time period they were set in?

☆ ☠ ✿ ♡ ൠ for Hawkeye please?
Sure :) Have some Hawkeye stuff
☆ - happy headcanon
Oh, happy Hawkeye! It takes on many forms and comes from many things.
He could look like a gleeful child, open and ready for an embrace.
He could look like a wild mad man, out on a wild rampage, full of bitting wit.
Hawkeye is happy when he sees B.J. holding a baby, when he sticks it to the man with his friends, a beautiful woman (or man) looking his way, when he's eating orgasim inducing food, etc
He'll be very happy when he sees his dad again.
His sparkling eyes, crinkles, and a wide eyed grin. Such a beauty!
☠ - angry/violent headcanon
An angry Hawkeye is a raving nightmare; a borderline lunatic.
He gets so damn loud! How could a man who is notoriously already so loud when having a simple conversation, get even louder!? Well he does it.
Hawkeye gets angry about various social injustices, the textures of food not aligning with what the texture is supposed to be, his jokes bombing when being told to people who are supposed to laugh (they know who they are), being told what to do by random people who think they know better but they sooo do not!, etc
✿ - Sex headcanon
Sex with Hawkeye can vary depending on who his partner is, how he feels about them, and where they are.
Of course, they are sure to get a fun little performance out of him regardless of those variables, but it will still make a difference.
In Korea, he was primarily having sex because he's a hypersexual person in a stress inducing environment and sex is a very pleasurable way to get your mind off of such things. Privacy being an issue, sex was often done on the quick. Just enough foreplay to make a good show of things, but not enough to really dazzle them.
When he has the time and privacy, and actually cares about who he is with, he will go much slower...much deeper.
Once again, Hawkeye has a bit of a volume control issue. He WILL. NOT. SHUT. UP.
There will be dirty talk, moaning, groaning, grunts, and panting (if he's really going hard). The only way to make this man stop being so noisy, is either to have his tongue occupied with your mouth or your genitals.
♡ - romantic headcanon
Well we know Hawkeye has been in love before (Carlye) , but it doesn't come easy or often for him.
He has mistaken lust and loneliness for love before, so Hawkeye thinks he's been in love more often than he really has.
Hawkeye could be in a healthy romantic relationship one day, but it would take a lot of growth, introspection, and maturity on his part to really foster such a bond with another human being.
Perhaps post war...perhaps somewhere in California...
ൠ - random headcanon
-Hawkeye LOVES Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when they eventually premier. I don't know why he's watching those shows. He might be babysitting someone's kid or maybe he gets really into hippie culture and is having some weed while watching daytime public tv. All I know is, once he sees these shows, he thinks they're fantastic. He is a Muppet, after all.
-He has a sensory processing disorder. In some ways as he's gotten older, it's gotten "better" but in other ways it's gotten "worse". Mostly it gives him issues with food textures and smells, but he also has issues with clothing and loud noises that aren't coming from him.
-Hawkeye's mother was Jewish. She wasn't from Crabapple Cove originally, and was somewhat ostracized by the locals, until Daniel Pierce put his foot down and refused to deal with any of that antisemitic bullshit.
-Hawkeye and B.J. will see each other again.

Righ back at ya! You can pick whichever you wanna answer.
14, 17, 20, 24, 34, 35, 42.
14. Do you collect anything?: I have a vinyl record collection that I'm really proud of. Some of them I've bought just because I like the music (like the GOTG soundtrack) but I also collect vintage ones. My two crown jewels are my Tom Lehrer and Jim Nabors records both from 66 that I found at a thrift store and are in INCREDIBLY good condition. This is an old photo but here they are :) Look at them they're so beautiful

17. What’s one thing you want to buy, but don’t have the money or resources to get?: I always wanted a lego DeLorean ever since I was little, and I still hope to get one eventually
20. If you could revive one tv show that has been cancelled, what show would it be?: INSIDE JOB. It fell victim to the absolute bullshit that is Netflix but it was such a good show. Another one I'd choose would be Firefly, and I know a lot've folks would agree with me because Fox fucked that show over imo. At least we got the movie that I still haven't watched yet.
24. Do you believe in any conspiracy theories?: The CIA killed JFK, the FBI killed MLK, and the crown had something to do with the death of Princess Diana. Hey, what's that red dot on my- *gets shot*
34. What’s your book/movie/tv guilty pleasure?: I love watching a bunch of shows I did when I was little: The Crocodile Hunter, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show, David Attenborough documentaries, Reading Rainbow, things like that. I used to kinda be ashamed at admitting some of the shows very clearly meant for really young kids, but fuck it Mr. Rogers and LeVar Burton make me happy so who cares. I also love old game shows like Match Game 77 and Who's Line Is It Anyway
35. If you could change your hair however you want, how would you change it?: I've always wanted to get a shaggy mullet haircut. Idk that's the dream for my trans ass
42. What’s one regret you have?: I deeply regret not admitting my love of horror to my grandmother on my mom's side before she died. Because of how strict and religious my family is, I kept that part of me hidden for a very long time. But when she passed and we were helping my grandfather clean out their house, I saw some of the horror movies they had in their dvd collection. It hit me then that I probably could've bonded with her over that especially since she was one of the "chiller" of my grandparents, and now I'd never be able to share that with her. That pair of grandparents lived in Las Vegas for most of my childhood and only moved to our state a couple of years before her death so we weren't incredibly close, but I still regret never even mentioning it every time I think of her.
#sorry for that last bit lmao but to be fair that is a question that was bound to get a bit deep#also I will never pass up an opportunity to show off my vinyl collection#I'm still waiting on one particular vinyl to arrive but once I get it I might show off some of my others just for fun#thanks for the ask caly! :)#asks#answered asks

Jasper would love Bluey
OKAY SO LIKE
I feel like hunter would really like watching kids shows like, for much younger kids cuz like. He never got to. He didnt get that experiencing and there can be something so incredibly comforting about kids shows like, the low level of conflict, the upbeat mood, the simplicity of the storytelling that lets your brain fucking rest. When I'm really stressed I like to watch old episodes of mr Rogers. They just make me feel better. And sometimes after a nightmare I like watching rescue riders. Hell, in high school when I was stressed badly enough to cry I'd turn on my TV and backyardigans would be on and I'd just lay in bed under the covers and watch it and feel so much better.
So you got dad prime jasper who's gonna love the adorable show about kids and family. And then hunter who never had a family or got to have these innocent experiences of childhood. This is eventually au obviously. Just. Hunter and jasper hanging out together watching bluey and enjoying Father Son Bonding Time. Hunter can get....... A snuggle

His Dark Materials season 3 continues!
These were slightly less grueling although part of it might be that I had a task to work on while watching. I still get the sense that they dragged out every beat with a bunch of additional conversations whenever they could. Maybe that would be more welcome if I was watching this week by week as they were released rather than in a row.
Episode 5:
Oh thank god the mulefa do have their seedpod wheels, just not all the time.
I bet Mary wishes her degree was in botany, zoology, or anthropology, not theoretical physics.
We really speedrun the mulefa plotline in this. I wonder if it's difficult for show only people to follow? I naturally can fill in the gaps without thinking about it too much. The take that Eden is a savanna filled with rollerskating elephants remains bold.
They put Mrs. Coulter back into skirts... the monsters. Mrs. Coulter x pants is the real flagship of this tv show.
Will misgendered his daemon but then immediately switched to "her" when he talked about her being with Pan. Maybe the reminder that Pan is male tipped him off.
Going to the land of the dead and saying 'do you guys want to like. leave' remains a power move. Love a good harrowing of hell/afterlife breakout. The walls being piles of cast off objects from the living world is an interesting addition.
Roger: I've changed. My mom: I got a lot older. Me: It turns out if you die you can still go through puberty. It's part of our torture.
They cut the liar/Lyra bit with the harpies which is a shame. I guess they sort of used it earlier with the guard in the entry area of the land of the dead calling her a liar. Still all the harpies stuff is kind of out of order, with Gracious Wings saving her before they made their deal. Also instead of human heads the harpies look like they are part turtle.
Will and Lyra: languishing in hell Mary: hot girl summer
They sure dragged the bomb thing out. Honestly I don't hate it missing Lyra because the target locked too early, considering 'a ghost magically knows about the bomb and they defeat quantum entanglement by giving her a haircut' was kind of an ass pull. I also don't necessarily hate the rift being the angels retaliating, since it makes Metatron a more major player before his defeat and it makes the increasing loss of Dust a more direct part of the 'battle'. It does sort of undercut so much of the damage to the worlds being humans fucking shit up in the name of the Authority though. The angels in the book really don't do much, and I think that's by design. Also talking to you, Good Omens showrunners.
Episode 6:
Nooooooo not more voiceovers
Ruta lampshades it in the books but really how did Lord Asriel build his massive compound with foundries in like 2 months after crossing universes with nothing but the clothes on his back.
Asriel seeing a giant rift rip open between worlds: clearly this is about me
Mrs. Coulter: Our daughter is dead. Asriel: *read 4:16 pm*
Mrs. Coulter is like what they say about converts being the biggest zealots except she's converted to parenthood
Sergei got sucked into the rift? Ok so they racebent Ruta, made her clash with Serafina as the more violent/impulsive one, gave her the tension with Mrs. Coulter, and then killed her off even though she doesn't die (at least onscreen) in the books. Not a good look, guys!
Adding some Roger/Will active jealousy rather than Roger just sadly observing how close he and Lyra are now while Lyra doesn't even realize it. Suppose that's harder to do in video. But Will are you really gonna beef with a dead kid. Let him have this
Asriel and Iorek talking is show!original but I'll let it slide because it was satisfying to see someone finally hit Asriel
Will's dad finally (vaguely) drops the lore about the wrong world killing you, even if he didn't make it sound fatal in the same way. You guys couldn't have even had him dramatically coughing up a little blood in the last season? That's a classic
IDK why Will's dad got to explain what happens to ghosts while Lyra keeps saying she doesn't know. Babe you have the alethiometer
They didn't have Lee and Will's dad stick around to be a gay ghost warrior duo! I'm genuinely surprised considering how they went out of their way otherwise to give LMM more scenes.
Mrs. Coulter heart to heart with the golden monkey. Golden monkey sympathy arc has been THE most surprising adaptation change tbh. Not even joking about this

Top 10 Spinoffs that really need to happen
Hi, friends. I may not be a fan of cheap sequels or prequels we don't want, I do think spinoffs are underrated especially if they focus on characters that are beloved and have interesting stories to tell. I mean, look at the success of Star Wars' many series especially its two diamonds being Clone Wars and Andor. I was inspired to make this list after seeing the trailer of Daryl Dixon.
In this list, I will my top ten medias that could it even bigger if they make these specific spinoffs.
Marvel's War Machine (Film/TV Series) - Nevermind Riri. Let's focus on this guy who was not only around long before her, but since the beginning. In time where we want more black representation than ever, I think War Machine is should be the next big thing. War Machine aka James Ruper "Rhodey" Rhodes is a decorated soldier to begin and Iron Man's right hand man. Despite the similar gimmick, his personality is much more serious, professional and mannerly. He can hold out on his own and he is a hero anyone of any type can look up to.
2. Marvel's Mary Jane Watson (Mini Series) - While she started off as Gwen Stacey's replacement and would alter become Peter Parker's main woman, she has now come quite into her own. She has even gone on adventures of her own, has become more capable and even became an ally in action for Spider-Man. While the comics have gone sour, maybe TV can bring us back MJ and Spidey as not only a couple, but as equals who both have exciting stories to tell.
3. Marvel's (REAL) Spider-Girl (TV Series/Film) - Speaking of TV redeeming MJ and Spidey as soul mates, last I remember, at one point, they were not only happily married, they had a daughter Mayday Parker who had the mantle passed down to her long before Miles Morales, the other Gwen Stacey (Spider-Woman) and all these other modern incarnations. She is a very underrated heroine who fell into obscurity no thanks to how Marvel broke up one of its most iconic couples. She needs to make a comeback because she is the true Spider-Girl in every way possible,
4. Disney's Goofy kid's show (TV Series) - For a while, the Disney gang made a big comeback since Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and almost everyone got their own spinoff or reboot. Everyone, but Goofy which I find is a waste because unlike all the others with the exception of Pete, he actually is a father. So far, the only independent works Goofy has gotten are Goof Troop, the two Goofy Movies and two animated shorts in some holidays specials. I think Goofy can make for a great host in a kid's show because despite his goofiness, he is a very capable and in fact, wise father. He would be a lot like Mr. Rogers or Mr. Dress Up where instead just playing with kids, he's actually teaching them and even comforting them the way a father does.
5. Resident Evil's Billy Coen (Video Game) - I don't think there's an RE fan out there who hasn't wished to see what became of this beloved one off character. Between you and me, I think he's still alive and kicking zombie, and I would love see what became of him after RE0. He not only came from one of the few prequel media out there that was great, but he is a total badass with a compelling backstory. We even got to see what happened to Sherry Birkin later one. I think Billy is more than worth a chance in the spotlight.
6. Silent Hill's Heather Mason (Video Game) - I know what you're thinking, but hear me out. While she got her own game (technically, two if you count the first ever SH game), I don't believe her story should have ended with SH3. The Mason family is the closest thing to a true SH main protagonist as there is I would love to her a now adult Heather Mason still fighting the Order as it is still out there wreaking havoc. She was a great heroine and an underrated video game character in general.
7. Jurassic Park for grown ups (TV Series) - It's had a few spinoffs so far and the only that is a big hit is Camp Cretaceous. I think another one should be made and this time, it should be aimed for adults. In the beginning, JP showed a lot of promise when it came to making adult oriented spinoffs with the comics and the sequel The Lost World, but after that, it became more and more about the action and less about the horror factor and dinosaurs. Even the revival trilogy of Jurassic World lacked that horror element that adults appreciated in the first two movies and most importantly, the book. We need to make a spinoff that is aimed for grown ups without it feeling like it wants to be Indiana Jones.
8. DC's Batgirl (TV Series) - Nevermind Batwoman, Batgirl was around first AND she was solo before joining the bat family officially. I mean, even her father Jim Gordon got his own spinoff series before she did and she's actually a super. And apparently, her film never saw the light of day because it was not up to standard. I say, we make a TV series that does live up to standard AND we make it animated like we did Harley Quinn. Barbara Gordon set the standard for a lot lady supers came after her and she iconic. EVERYONE knows who Batgirl is. Even people who don't read comics know who Batgirl is. What I don't know is why she hasn't starred in her own solo media yet beyond comics.
9. DC's Catwoman (Film/TV Series) - Speaking of iconic DC heroines, it is funny how one of its most iconic anti-heroines, love interest's to Batman and just recently, bisexual supers still hasn't gotten any independent media beyond her comics. If there's one woman who doesn't need no Batman (let alone man in general) to stand on her own two feet and have a compelling story to tell, it's her. The only thing we have gotten are two films. One which is imposter media starring Halle Berry and another no one knows about. Seline Kyle deserves so much more than that. I say she gets her own proper show or at the very least, a proper film. She's worth it.
10. Capcom's Dino Crisis (Video Game) - I think this franchise only got one spinoff (two if you count the third instalment that went off the rails), and it wasn't a hit. Dino Crisis was clearly inspired by the original Jurassic Park especially when it came to horror and the feeling of being genuinely threatened by the dinosaurs. This game felt like the long lost twin sister of RE. With that said, it should get a spinoff because it's worth a last hurrah and who knows? It mind revive this lost gem of a series. I say we go for it and put our best foot forward doing it. Let it be true to the lore, the setting and theme. None of the dinos in space silliness.
Anyway, that is my list. What is your opinion on it? Would you like to see these spinoffs or can you suggest another? Let me know.
Thanks for reading and as always, stay safe.

He was strong.

Baby d being obsessed with a tv show which H claims has the most annoying theme tune to 😂 but if it makes his baby happy then he’s happy. Then the missus catches him singing the tune around the house and he’s like a rabbit caught in headlights
STOP THAT'S SO CUTE 🥺 She'll catch him singing it but she'll also catch him watching it without D sometimes. And he's always like, "Well, I couldn't find anything else!"
Also love the thought of them showing the kids a lot of the very calm, gentle, old-school kid shows. Like Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow, etc.

Softening the Callouses of The Heart
I've been a romantic for most of my life and probably still am somewhere deep inside.
I tend to hold hope in the power of love, but some callouses have formed around my heart over the last several years, mainly because our culture has become so fractured and uncivil.
Many of us are feeling the same way. Add to that the memory of the global pandemic, the civil unrest, and the contentious elections since then, and it's easy to see why.
As if that weren't enough, scores of us have also experienced profound life changes, difficult losses, and other similar experiences that have left us grieving and uncertain about the future.
I was reading Anne Lamott's latest book, Somehow: Thoughts on Love, recently and came across the following passage that gave me chills (the good kind):
One thing is certain: Love is our only hope. Love springs from new life, love springs from death. Love acts like Gandhi, our pets, Jesus, Mr. Bean, Mr. Rogers, and Bette Midler. Love just won't be pinned down... Love is the warmth we feel in the presence of a favorite aunt, the kindness of a waitress, and the warmth of the hand that pulls us back to our feet when the loss of love has all but destroyed us. It is this stuff, which any kid and most poets will tell you we experience in our hearts.
At this point, we could cue The Beatles' song "All You Need Is Love," which, for some, might be a relic from a distant past but is still relevant to us in our current time and space.
Instead, I'd like to share my thoughts on how I'm working on those callouses built up around my heart lately and why love is all we need right now.
First, I am developing habits that enable me to dwell more on good, beautiful, and true things. This is an addition-by-subtraction because it requires shutting out negativity and embracing what is positive, life-giving, and uplifting.
I try not to watch TV very much, and when I do, I try to find something that brings me joy, like Ted Lasso or The Great British Baking Show. This doesn't mean I won't occasionally watch a good action movie, suspense thriller, or dark comedy, but those aren't my go-to.
If I go on social media, I seek out and watch heartwarming videos, read positive posts, and generally do everything I can to teach the algorithms that those are the kinds of posts I want to see. It works.
What also works is not responding to fearful and awful posts on social media, even though sometimes I feel like giving the person who posted them a piece of my mind. It's a waste of time, and most of those folks need to be ignored because they usually try to get a rise out of others.
I am also working on smiling at people more. It doesn't always work, but nine out of 10 people tend to smile back. That little gesture gets me off my phone, raises my gaze from the ground before me, and helps me spread positive energy.
In other words, I'm doing everything possible to show love to everyone I encounter. I don't always get this right, but when I do, I'm more mindful of it, and I'm falling short closer to the mark than I used to.
The foundation for all this is vulnerability, which is difficult for many of us. But when we risk vulnerability and open our hands and hearts, slowly and surely, the callouses seem to soften.
May we stay open to giving and receiving love in a world where we must learn to do both. May we risk vulnerability to do our part to soften the callouses in our culture.
And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all, now and forever. Amen.
