I was obsessed with Eragon as a kid but I WHOLEHEARTEDLY blame The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris d'Lacey for making me wish for a dragon friend in the way OP describes

childhood emotion of wanting a dragon that is your friend so bad that it feels like there is a vacuum in your soul that only a dragon who is your friend can fill

#dragons #such a great kids series about dragons tho highly recommend #just bought the box set recently for my 5 year old cuz she discovered dragon tales for the first time #and i fear her dino obsession might be demoted in her list of “most amazingest animals everrrr” in favor of dragons #“dragons are just like pterodactyls mama except they can cook their food...with FIRE BREATH..and eat people that are mean to them ...#“ can i be a drahon when i get all grown up mom?”#btw if you think pterodactyls is a word not in her 5 year old vocab i must inform you that A. kids are sponges and Dino Dana is her favorit #and she genuinely knows more scientific facts and the scientific names for dinos than most adults i know myself included
