rgu is not actually very hard to understand, but i do get why it's gotten that reputation. there are certainly things about it that are difficult to wrap your head around, like if you focus a lot on specific symbols. but the emotional core of the story, a narrative about abuse, should be pretty clear to anyone who watches it.
#this sounds a little mean and condescending but i promise i don't mean it that way!#i'm not trying to say 'this is actually so simple and you're stupid if you don't get it' because obviously it's not simple#and i don't wanna call anyone stupid unless they're deliberately ignoring the point.#but you don't need to focus on deciphering (this is imo the wrong way to go about analysis in general) everything on your first viewing#just let yourself feel the emotions the show gives you. get yourself invested in the characters. they're written in a way that almost anyon#can relate to them or at least empathize with them. and that's the most important thing.#leave the symbolism for the second or third rewatch if you need to. or don't get into it at all if you don't want to! that's fine too#when people come out of the show with the response of 'i didn't understand any of that' i think it's just a matter of them#focusing on the wrong thing. you will not be able to understand every single thing at once so don't try#revolutionary girl utena#m
