PREACH! When I first started shipping none of the people in that fandom thought the ship would *ever* become real. And honestly it's crazy weird that people think a lot of the ships will become canon.
And the entitlement some people feel over a show and what the creators do is unreal.
I really liked Voltron when it first aired, but after the disgusting way fans treated each other and the creators I couldn't engage anymore.
It is like 95% positive your ship won't become canon (she-ra changed my mind on it being 100% to not become canon tbh)
Your ship is not more valid bc it has a "chance" of becoming canon.
All ships are good. Open up your eyes to multishipping and stop shitting on other fans.
Stop feeling entitled to shows you didn't create. You are sad or angry because you didn't like that something happened or how the show ended?
That is why we have fan fiction. Go change it yourself.
I know I sound like an old lady screaming on my lawn "back in my day!"
And there was still wank and fans hating on each other, but it was not justified by the chance a ship would become "canon".
And it could be my rose colored glasses, or that I wasn't in the right areas of fandom to see it (I was like 16-17 when I moved to LJ for fandom, like peak Stargate Atlantis times) and I didn't find out about the fandom wank community until later and I wasn't active there. But the authors I followed did not do that shit.
And it wasn't as vicious to people who shipped a different pairing. And by and large we had ship and let ship, and your cup of tea might not be my cup of tea. (yes there were other issues, racism in some things that are *still* an issue today, so yes I know it wasn't all fun happy times).
But like I get tired these days, going into discord servers and seeing these arguments about which pairing is more "valid", and people telling other people why their tropes or kinks are "not acceptable" and it just sucks.
Maybe sit down with a fandom old and talk to them. You'll learn some things, and maybe just maybe they could help better current fandom.
i will say, the worst thing that happened in fandom was when shipping just became “i ship this bc it’s gonna be real” and not just “i ship this bc i think it’s a fun dynamic to explore idc what the writers are doing that’s not my business”
