the important parts of history are often gruesome and difficult to look at. its important to know about bad shit that happened because it's vital and part of our social responsibility to prevent atrocities from occurring again, and to remember people who were or are affected by them. but sometimes i really wish i had a dedicated time of the week where i can learn just about amelio robles ávila, an openly trans man accepted by his friends and family who took no shit. or joseon korea era amhaeng-eosa, a group of undercover agents during joseon era korea who would integrate with the common people and their concerns in order to root out corrupt officials.

Trust Your Network?

Do you usually use social media like for assignments, home works, researches, business, and for other more reasons? Yes, let us say that social media has been a huge beneficiary to the society wherein people would always benefit and rely too much into it. We all know that social media has provided so much help especially in the 21st Century world.

 It has provided so much advantages in our society, which has been an asset of a person. But we could not directly say that it has only provided “advantages” in the society knowing that people have used social media as an access to commit crimes. There have been reports globally that people have been committing common cybercrime issues such as cyberbullying, software piracy, identity theft, hacking, and etc.

Now, We, J.K.L Team, have conducted a survey to give us a further understanding of what are really the advantages and disadvantages of social media to our society. It is now our job to study and analyze the answers of each correspondent of how have they reacted in answering each questions.

Now, we all know that social media are websites and applications that allow users to make and share contents or to contribute in social networking. Also whenever you hear the word “social media”, there’s a presence of the multifarious information, may it be news, updates, entertainment, formed thoughts, experiences and a lot more. With the attention scooting on the media, social media had a lot to do with the people’s concerns and discernment. It has served as a connection through all around the world. With the rising growth of social media, people are able to connect with people especially to their families and loved ones who are miles away from them. It also helps us to be constantly aware of the issues pertaining to our society. Social media also let people learn and discover things depending on the way on how they are using it. It as a benefit for people especially to students because they can use this media as their reference in their school works. Moreover, through social media, we could be able to join groups with our specific interest.

The question is “what is really the PURPOSE of social media in our lives?”

Through the survey we have conducted we would know the correspondent’s point of view of how they see social media in their lives.

We’ve interviewed a total of 43 people in this survey. Approximately 52.4% or mostly half of the correspondents who answered are teenagers. We assumed that teenagers are the ones with more experience compared to adults aging 21 to 30 years old and children aging less than 16 years old. We really wanted to know the viewpoint of teenagers pertaining to the issues of social media that is faced by the society. Most of our correspondents have their own social media accounts. Statistics says that 95.2% have their corresponding social media accounts. We could therefore conclude that people have adapted to the new and advanced environment. It is their choice whether they are going to cope and adapt into it. Knowing that the continuous advancement or rise of media people would be more engaged and involved into it.

WHY USE SOCIAL MEDIA?

Social media has a lot of reasons why it should be used by people. It may be used for assignments, home works, or many more. Now statistic says that most of our correspondents used social media as for entertainment. A total of 39 people. We have also included school purposes which averages 37 people, knowing that social media has commonly been accessed by students for possible home works, researches, assignments, and etc. Also we have included news and updates, wherein a total of 33 people have also answered this. They are also accessing social media for news and updates so that they would be updated with the events and happenings everywhere around the world. Also to share opinions wherein it averages 20 people who have checked this. Also sharing of photos with a total of 30 people who have checked it.

But what are the common websites usually visited by these people? According to statistics Facebook is the commonly visited website by the people which averages 36 people who’ve answered this. Also the honorable mentions are Twitter (averages 25 people), YouTube (averages 29 people), Instagram (averages 28 people), and lastly Snap Chat (averages 6 people).

NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT CYBERCRIMES.

The correspondents really cooperated and answered with honesty. Expectedly, half of the correspondents have already witnessed or committed a cybercrime. Statistic says that 52.5% of the people have already committed and 47.5% haven’t committed or witnessed anything. For the people who have committed, the most common type of cybercrime that they have committed is Cyberbullying, a total of 18 people who answered this. Cyberbullying is very common not only in the Philippines but globally. It has been one of the main reasons why teenagers gets depressed and then afterwards they tend to suicide. Also our correspondents have also committed or witnessed identity theft, hacking, software piracy, and cyber plagiarism.

According to the statistics, cyberbullying has been witnessed/ committed most by our correspondents which has the rate of 94.7%, followed by Cyber Plagiarism which has the rate of 83.2% and runs closely to Hacking which has the rate of 52.6%, next is the Software Piracy which has the rate of 47.4% and lastly the Identity theft which has the rate of 30.8%. Cyberbullying is on the rise due to misuse of social media and electronic devices as well. Many people are being involved in this crime because this is the easiest way of bullying since it doesn't involve face to face interaction. Next is Cyber Plagiarism. No wonder why this cybercrime is also on the rise especially in this modern era. This is usually committed by students nowadays due to loaded school works like research, homework and other paper works. Students tend to copy everything on the internet since it can provide all the information they need to accomplish their tasks. Followed by Hacking, this is usually done by people who have the skill in programming. It may be caused by insecurities, desperate in knowing confidential issues and financial gain. Next is Software Piracy, which usually occurs among people who experience hardships in downloading a software and some people don't want to pay for a software that requires payment. Lastly, the identity theft. This cybercrime is caused by stealing one's identity to apply for a job, open credit card accounts to steal money and to apply for loans. Also, this may also be caused by trying to ruin reputation of a certain people.

Our correspondents do think that social media should be shut down because of these crimes. According to statistics 52.5% of our correspondents disagreed on shutting down social media. We think that it is pointless to shut down social media knowing that it brought so much benefits and convenience especially to families, students, workers, and etc. While 45% of the correspondents answered “maybe” and a few only answered “yes”.

HERE’S WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT THE EFFECTIVITY OF SOCIAL MEDIA.

People rate the effectiveness of the media mostly at the percentage of 60% to 70%, followed by 80% - 90% and the least big is 40% to 50%. As of the results, majority says that the social media is somewhat reliable for both necessities and the importance of using it. Which means that it has disadvantages too when it comes to sensitive things, such as issues to the millennials, the use of a certain website, and such. They would see the exposed posts that may be affecting or penetrating to others, that they may absorb those in a deleterious way of perspectives. The social media somewhat helps the society since it has more than a handful of any information for the people needed to get or know, but it has other concerns relating to the negativity upon the society, the relationships between any people face-to-face and through a device.

THE STORY BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The most number of people responded that people continuously manipulated social media for a bad cause. Followed by people who are not sure and least responded “no”. With these, we can say that social media had influenced people negatively. Based on the answers gathered, users are aware of the causes of misusing social media. Many people have been engaged themselves in social media. As a result, they aren’t noticing that they are using it in the wrong way. Using social media must consider some limitations to avoid cybercrimes and other effects that might affect one’s personal lives. Only few people can confidently say that they are using social media in the right way which can’t cause bad effects that may affect people’s perceptions regarding social media.

The most of responses is they can have the authenticity when they use social media.  Second is they answered “maybe”, while the least is “no”. There are these instances that can really inhabit the people as being expressive of what they were feeling, they would make it expose to the Medias such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, especially Twitter. Since Twitter does the thing of expressing one's thoughts through tweeting. People are being who they really are in the social media since it's undeniable that on what they say is what they are. Just as how we quote the "Eyes are windows to the soul" which prefers to characteristics and personalities of an individual. Through a post of a person is what he or she is. Just as how we can describe him or her is we actually know somebody, like, of course if we say she is a fangirl, she would always share posts that come from her idols. It's just as the same of a person who's not that expressive. She or he seldom post a post on Twitter, and such. There are actually a handful of reasons as to why people can really be their own true selves when it comes to social media, social media is also like a second place for them to release their own expressions. They'd often have the purpose for taking memories as remembrance, resemblance of something, sharing, and more. In this case, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook has made most people be of truthful of themselves more, since these three major sites clearly has the bound for people to open their own interests and shares, that intersects with their own kinds of extinguishing posts and can be seen as exposure to any people. We'd also come to say that on what we are seeing through their social medias is what his or her personality is. One example of a proof is; in Instagram, one friend is good at photography, it's expected that her feed is goals and is cool because of the good shots she have. We can say that people think that they are being true when it comes to the social media because they can't express these in reality, or so.

THE ULTIMATE REVELATION OF SOCIAL MEDIA 

The correspondents answers it gave us a clear understanding of how they see social media in their lives. Upon knowing the answers from our correspondents, we could therefore conclude that social media has brought so much advantages and also disadvantages to the society. Let us start with the advantages. For students, workers, teachers, and etc. it has brought so much help in their parts. Especially when researching for such information they could seek for the guidance of social media. So the effectivity of social media, we could say that it is “moderate”, yes, let’s say that it has been very beneficial to people but the assurance of the details shown is not that really of “facts” wherein there could be possibilities that those details are fraud. But, still the effectiveness of social media is still efficient wherein it is still used by people. It is also used for communication wherein families may have an easy time communicating from their families from afar. As we said, the continuous rise of media brought so much advantages to the society especially to families. Social media has brought so much purpose for the lives of the people. It can be accessed for entertainment, news and updates, to share photos, and many more reasons. So we could say that social media has been very influential knowing that it has brought so much purpose in our lives. Not only in our live but for the world.

It has also brought so much disadvantages to the society wherein crimes have been continuously rising all around the world through the access of social media. These has been very common globally such as cyberbullying, cyber plagiarism, identity theft, hacking, and etc. People have been using different kinds of social networking sites to access such crimes. Cyberbullying has been the most common issue that has been faced by people wherein it could be accessed to any social networking site that could ruin one’s image. People’s immoral actions may cause so much danger especially when they are truly engaged and addicted to social media. They could do so many things that we can’t even imagine. Also cyber plagiarism has been very common especially to students wherein they are tempted to copy everything from another source to make it look that it is their work. They don’t even think of citing the source which makes it more “worse” situation because that is a crime. These treacherous acts of the people can tempt them to do this crimes again and again.

Now what is really the purpose of social media in our lives? To be honest it has brought so much advantages in our lives but people tend to do the bad things. If we are benefiting too much to social media, then we don’t deserve our minds because the tendency of the people to do is to always rely on social media which is not a very good thing. So it is now our task to know our boundaries and limitations in order to avoid doing the bad things. Yes, let us say that it has brought so much purpose in our lives but we must use social media with care and intellect wherein you would know what to do and what not to do accessing social media
