Ooo thats fun. I was not expecting a doctor who character. Ok. Lets go.

Why I like them: part of it is just because she was my first companion. I fell in love with Doctor Who through her. But also, theres something to be said for a perfectly normal, ordinary person with flaws and who probably doesnt think much of themselves, who is young and naive and loving, who ends up doing extraordinary things without some preternatural destiny guiding them. The only other companion who really hit on that was Bill. Donna had a bit, but there were elements of s4 that implied that it was all some sort of prophecy coming together. The DoctorDonna and all that. Rose really was so ordinary. Even Bad Wolf was born of something so ordinary, so human, this intense love and desire to protect. Rose was, in so many ways, such a perfect first companion, because from the beginning shes such an every girl. And she has so much compassion for so many. Everytime she interacts with people, especially people who work for other people, she treats them like people and like equals. Theres the mechanic in "the end of the world," gwenyth, etc. I just... Ugh. I love her. Bills still my fave, but rose is a VERY close second.

Why I don't like them: her selfishness. I dont know if its really that I dont like her because of it, because I like that she has a real, human flaw, and its a real reason that people might dislike them. It means shes well written, and feels real and human. But it still bugs me. Especially in s1, but even in parts of s2. She treats Mickey and her mother with this dissmissiveness, which is very immature. Like she thinks they only exist when shes around. She gets called on it though, and pretty early on. She never fixes it fully, especially where Jackie is concerned, but she makes an effort. But you can especially see it in school reunion, with her jealousy of sarah jane. She has a problem with the people she loves fully having lives outside of her, especially when those lives seem like a threat to the one shes creating.

Favorite Episode: the Parting of ways, fear her, turn left, or stolen earth/journeys end. Aka, im a simple girl with simple pleasures, and those pleasures are rose being a badass/saving the day. Special mention for the idiot lantern bc i must have watched it 20 times and they give me LIFE the doctor and rose in that episode.

Favorite season: 2. Shes starting to get more confident and sure of herself, but shes still human and flawed.

Favorite Line: whatever the hell she says during the christmas invasion, when shes trying to get the sycorax to leave. Its utter bull, makes zero sense, and its beautiful.

OTP: Doctor/Rose. Any doctor. Im a little desperate to see rose/thirteen. Also Rose/doctor/river. If ianto didnt exist, id say rose/jack/doctor, but alas, he does.

Favorite outfit: oh god. Either the one in the unquiet dead, the idiot lantern, the long game, or the doctor dances. There are so many more though. Her costuming was brilliant.

So when Rose dropped out of high school for Jimmy Stone, she ran away. Went off on tour with Stone and his band. While on tour, she got.very close to the other band members, including the lead singer/lyricist, a very cute 20 yr old Welshman going through his rebellious phase named Ianto Jones, who helped her figure out she needed to go home and, in the process realized he needed to stop rebelling and start acting like a mature adult, leading to him eventually signing on with Torchwood. Meanwhile, Rose is stranded all the way in Paris because she won't stay on that tour bus with Jimmy, and she's terrified to call her mum, who had told her she'd never forgive her if she ran off and wasted her life on Jimmy. Penniless and desperate, walking alone in the rain, Rose thinks she's never going to make it back to London when she almost gets run over by a car after forgetting to watch where she's going and wandering into the street. The driver swerves and just barely miss her, and after pulling over, a man hops out of the car and starts admonishing her, when Rose bursts into tears. Feeling badly, the man insists on taking her home. She tells him home is in London, too far away for her to accept, but the man refuses to listen, telling her he was heading to London anyway, and here, why don't you borrow my cell phone and call your mum, I'm sure she wants you home. He's right of course, and Jackie cries from relief at hearing from her and is thrilled she's coming home. The man's name was Rory, she learned on the drive, and he was married to a wonderful woman who he loved named Amy, and they lived in Leeds but he was travelling around from work and he was heading from Paris to London because of it. It took six hours to gt back to London, and once they got there, her mum treated Rory to breakfast and he went on his way and rose never saw him again.

Yes, it was that Rory. He was with Amy and the Doctor and he got stranded in Paris in the early 2000's and he wasn't heading into London at all but he felt very bad about almost hitting the poor girl with his car and he recognized her from an old picture he found while he was wandering the Tardis and he brought it to the doctor to ask him about it and the Doctor got very sad and very quiet and walked very quickly away from the conversation and Rory figured that meant that he used to travel with her and there was a sad story in there somewhere and he was curious about the girl and how she'd inspire that kind of emotion from a man he'd rarely seen care about anything real.

Should I make this a fanfiction? I kind of want to make this an actual fic... Anyway.

Unpopular opinion: ...She is a very much not straight woman. I don't know if that's unpopular, but it isn't popular. Or at least, it isn't talked about.

Imagine Hopper finding out that older women are flirting with his boy (saying innapropriate things, toching him and what not). And its before Billy is with Steve. And Hopper have a talk with Billy about that he doesnt need to behave like that with older women anymore.

Okay i never even thought about this but when i saw this ask i couldn’t STOP thinking about it bc like????? The boy is 17 in season 2 and even if he maybe is 18 by season 3, that's just BARELY LEGAL and Very Gross and our society let's women off the hook for preying on young boys bc it's seen almost like "lucky" for the boy?? Like "what boy wouldn't want a 40 yr old woman wanting to fuck him????" And that's super gross!! And awful!! (There was a whole reality game show thing that had a lot of this and it was So So Gross, if anyone wants to ask me about that i have Lots of opinions on that show in particular)

But ANYWAY I'm gonna say that Hop had that same mentality. He might have even had a little one time tryst w/ the woman who lived next door and didn't seem to think a lot of it bc she always said if it wasn't gonna be w/ him then it'd be w/ the milkman and hop always thought that dude was a skeeze. He knew a few kids growing up who had women after them, taking them to Woodstock when that went down, making everything look like they just thought the boy was a "handsome young man". I'm gonna say that Hopper let all that shit slide in the past.

But then he saw it happening to Billy.

Hop is out on a call, helping a cat out of a tree or something mundane, when he hears a loud laugh and looks over to see it's Mrs. Peters and….. and Billy. His son, Billy. Leaning his elbow up against the top of his car and chuckling a bit with the loud woman. He's biting the knuckle of his thumb and he's smirking around it but that's what alerts Hop bc the boy has only been living w/ them a few months, sure, but Hopper knows that he only does that when he's anxious about something. He'll do it when he has a big test at school that day or when he accidentally breaks a glass while washing it.

And so they're talking (well she's talking and Billy will occassionally say something that makes her laugh even LOUDER) and good fucking luck to whoever Jim was supposed to be helping bc he's watching this woman like a hawk as she lightly touches her exposed collarbone and graces a finger over it gently and that's all the hint Hopper would ever need to invite a woman home but it's a dirty fucking trick to play on a hot blooded 17 yr old. And Billy shifts his weight closer to his car and hop KNOWS the boy is trying to leave. Plus Hop knows Billy prefers boys bc he's told him so he can only imagine how uncomfortable he must be.

So when the woman reaches a hand out and caresses Billy's shoulder and squeezes his arm a little with another loud laugh, Hop is storming across the street. He watches Billy tense up and play it off as a flex and Hop is there in a flash, saying: "any interesting gossip today, Mrs. Peters?"

Billy stops biting his knuckle.

"Oh no! Just chatting with your boy here. You know, he's a very handsome young man"

Hop keeps himself from snarling.

"Well, don't let him keep you here. I know he's got a motormouth. Can talk for hours…."

Billy rolls his eyes at that. The woman giggles.

And after she leaves, Billy tries to get into his car with a quick goodbye but hopper puts a hand on his shoulder (gentle so as to not scare the shaken boy more)

"What was that about?"

Billy shrugs. "She just wanted to talk, i don't know."

"Seemed a little friendly for just talking."

"Yeah well, a lot of the women around here are… Friendly. I'm sure you know that, Chief."

Hop doesn't like that answer.

"Look, billy i-... I don't like how she was looking at you."

"Don't get jealous now, Pops. I'll leave some fish out there for ya."

"Cut the crap kid, don't forget i know-" but hop stops bc they're in public and no one's paying them any mind but that doesn't mean no one's listening. Everything has ears in Hawkins.

Billy deflates a bit, putting his act off with a sigh.

"Why'd you even entertain that, huh?" Hop asks. Billy bites the inside of his lip and looks for all the world like a nervous little boy.

"Because…If i don't talk they touch me more. To get my attention or some shit I dunno. And it's…nice to see them smile at me I guess. I don't fucking know."

And I just wanna say that we talk a lot about Daddy issues and YES, I agree, those are major, but can we talk about mommy issues too over here??? Bc I see a Billy who knows he's hot as hell and basically a suburban-mom-yearning-for-a-divorce's wet dream. And his own mother left him w/ a man who tormented him his whole life and Susan shows no care for him so he never had that mother figure who gave him support and comfort and solace.

So when these mothers show him interest and invite him in for cookies or offer to buy him alcohol, all in exchange for the ability to give him lewd glances and to squeeze his arm or (sometimes) pinch his ass…Well this is just the relationship he has with older women now.

And hopper feels awful that this boy has gotten so used to this. He thinks about all of the boys he's seen getting touched by older women and tries to think if they looked uncomfortable. And he tells Billy that those women shouldn't be doing that.

"No one else cares." Billy shrugs.

"Yeah sure but… theres no way in hell someone like me would be getting away with doing that to a girl your age."

"You sad you can't touch teenagers-?"

"Shut up, Billy. I'm saying it shouldnt be any fucking different. And you shouldn't feel like you needed to do that just to get respect from those women. You're not a fucking toy for them to play with."

"You're gonna have to tell all the lonely women of hawkins-"

"Look they all subscribe to Cosmo for a reason. They can use that. If they keep bothering you, let me know and I'll set it straight. Somehow."

And so TELL ME Billy isn't shocked and awed and a little teary when he meets Joyce bc hop and her are dating and they all hang out a lot for dinners and stuff and Billy learns Joyce is a badass who takes care of her sons like it's her life goal bc it fucking IS for her. And Billy is washing dishes w/ Will and says he thinks Joyce is pretty cool and will tells Billy that Joyce seems to really like Billy. And at first Billy thinks it's the same as every other woman but will says 

"When Hop’s around and you’re not she asks if you’re eating well. Or if you’re sleeping alright. Or how you’re doing in school and all that.” Will shrugs like it’s nothing particularly new.

But billy’s heart nearly stops with how fast it beats from those words. He almost drops the plate he's washing, 

“If I didn’t know any better and if I didn’t almost die twice, I’d think she worries more about you than about Jonathan and I.”

And now Billy’s going to cry. He hates it, it’s overwhelming and hot but he really can’t hold it back. This woman, who has absolutely no blood relation to him whatsoever asks how he’s eating and sleeping. Asks about his schooling. Cares for him so much that she asks after him.

He sniffles, and Will stops drying the plate in his hand.

“Billy? You alright?”

“Yeah.” He says, sniffling a bit more and pausing before splashing Will with the water in the sink.

He cries out “Hey!” before kicking at billy’s ankle.

ohhh boy this is by no means a complete list and it’s long as hell, but

also, like, before someone comes after me, this is coming from a place of love for the show. 

i’d scrap certain plots (that i won’t mention the specifics of on here in fear of losing friends) entirely

actually. i’ll spill. y’know. what the hell. i’d scrap 90% of the jacob plot. across the sea was a waste of an episode and a waste of my mother ms. janney. i liked the jacob plot as it stood in s3, but s5/s6 made it ridiculous imo.

y’all. let it be aliens. let it be ghosts. don’t let it be mark pelliwhatever and his sad goth moping. that’s boring.

i’d either keep walt around longer (which, considering that children have this terrible inconvenience called puberty, isn’t super plausible), or scrap his plot. taller ghost walt’s a good goof, but it’s not a good thing to keep looming around yr plot, never truly elaborated on.

just. a lot of s5 & s6 would be different. okay. god.

i have more to say on this i’m just so fucking tired

while i’m a big sci-fi/worldbuilding fan, lost’s strength was in its characters, which is something that the creative team, i guess, completely forgot about in those last few seasons, just because people were more vocal about wanting answers, so i feel like i’d personally focus more on one of my favorite (types of stories? tropes? themes? idk the word here lol), which is a character-driven story on a weirdass backdrop. again, my favorite lost b-plot is Make Sawyer Be Nice To People 2k04, or, like, fucking tricia tanaka is dead. tricia tanaka is dead and the constant both have this strength imo!

now, you might say, but bee, those episodes are completely tonally different and the constant is objectively art whereas ttid is a filler comedic episode, but, like. they succeed in that, despite being based around Weird Shit Going Down, they’re focused on, like, hurley, charlie, jin, and sawyer’s friendship, or desmond and penny’s love. they’re better episodes than, say, fucking lighthouse, because lighthouse is all about the mystery, and jack’s character development is in the background. which sucks.

speaking of jack’s character development, fuck jack. make him a more interesting character. fuck you.

the show’s handling of race issues is fucking terrible, especially when it comes to how it villainizes and eventually kills off michael, ana, and sayid. i’ve talked about this a lot on here but. yeah. but, yeah, remember when literally 3 main characters of color died in one scene, with, and some of y’all might argue with me here, very little emotional payoff? fuck that!

lost, admittedly, broke thru a lot of barriers re: representation on tv–sayid’s iraqi, he’s muslim, and, for the first few seasons, at least, he’s a good guy, a smart guy, who people trust! michael’s a sensitive artist who loves his son. hurley is a mentally ill fat latino man who is universally beloved! sun’s (usually) got her own agency, her own arc, and her own personality! and miles is perfect and can do no wrong and i would die for him.

but, still, their characterization often revolves around shitty, shitty stereotypes, and most characters of color are ultimately turned into antiheroes, or, in extreme cases, straight up villains.

and, oh boy, the fridged ladies. nadia. shannon. juliet. charlotte. libby. ana. god, y’all.

if yr gonna tell me “juliet wasn’t fridged she had 3 seasons of development and it created emotional stakes for s6!!!!” her arc wasn’t done and her death was written to make sawyer Sad Again. fuck that. 

just. it’s not that i wouldn’t kill off characters if i were writing for lost. because the cycle of life & death is a really interesting theme it explores, and it handles grief fairly well, but. maybe consider why you’re killing a character off. is it for the development of another character? try again! you can develop a character without destroying another! think harder!

and of course a main aspect of the plot is a Magic Disability Cure! as a disabled person, this trope pisses me off, but, whatever, whatever.

i’m not sure exactly how to resolve this issue, esp. bc the magic disability cure is so pivotal to john’s arc. ugh.

i would make the writing good because, like, a lot of it isn’t. but. y’know.

cut a BUNCH of romances, that, yeah, not naming names.
