Jealousy, Jealousy!

Summary: You're approached by someone at the bar. How do they react?

Warnings: 800 words. Mentions of insecurities on Marcille's part.

A/N: These were starting to rot in my google docs so enjoy!

Laios

Congratulations on getting this man to understand that you are interested in a monogamous romantic relationship with him and got him to agree. The hardest part is over.

If he sees you having a conversation with someone it’s unlikely he’ll care. Unless they’re beastkin or some type of monster hybrid then he’ll care.

Even if he’s standing there with you and blatantly hitting on you he’ll probably say something like “yeah aren’t they so cool :) “

Sighs

It’s far more likely that you’ll be the one experiencing jealousy in the relationship since he's just as oblivious about people flirting with him than he is people flirting with you.

Marcille

She is the one who gets jealous in a very obvious way but at the same time is the one who will most vehemently deny it. 

You're having a polite conversation with an adventurer about your respective experiences in dungeons and you can almost feel her pouting at you.

When you turn to look at she has the same face she makes when Laios has a meal recommendation.

Disgust and general upsetness.

Marcille hates that she feels this way, but her insecurities always get the better of her, especially if you're a short lived race.

She already has so little time with you in this world, and she's loath to share it.

As much as she wants to, it’s unlikely that she’ll interrupt the conversation. If she sees that whoever you’re speaking to is making you uncomfortable she’ll step in but she’ll most likely just sit and pout into her food.

When you go home, she’s unusually quiet.

Unless you’re the kind of person that’s completely oblivious to other people's feelings, you’ll understand what’s going on.

The best course of action is to gently remind her that you love her and that you want to spend your life by her side, no matter how long it is.

Kabru

Somehow turns it into an opportunity to gain information

You’re chatting away and all of a sudden he’s sliding next to you and putting his hand on you somewhere and he’s doing that smile he does at the other person that tells you that he’s about to get this person's life story

If you’re introverted this could be a blessing, because he can honestly just take over the conversation from there. Kabru will buy you a drink for your troubles and you can sit there and sip while they yap.

If the person is actually interested in you the interaction will become hostile but only in its undertones.

Kabru has invested too much time and energy into being seen as kind and charming and he doesn’t want to wreck it.

He’ll start saying things like ““It’s very crowded here. Do you think anyone would notice if someone disappeared?”

“I think red is your color. Would you want to wear some soon?” 

Okay weirdo (affectionately) 

Hopefully the person he’s talking to gets the hint. If they don’t he’ll make up some excuse to remove both of you from the situation. 

Mithrun

He leans more towards possessiveness rather than jealousy.

If someone is talking to you and he doesn’t like it he will simply grab you or the offender and teleport away.

Which one he grabs depends on how aggressive he deemed them to be

If it's just a normal conversation he’ll teleport you away outside the bar. It’s pretty irritating especially if you were enjoying yourself or you were getting good information. Threaten to make him sleep on the couch. He’ll say he’s sorry but he will absolutely do it again. 

If he decides your conversation partner is being flirty with you, you’ll sense his anger without even seeing him  just before he disappears with them.

When he makes his way back you angrily ask what he’s done. He tells you he just gave them a stern talking to. Yeah sure. That person is never seen again and he receives a strongly worded message from Pattadol everytime it happens.

You should probably actually make him sleep on the couch.

Thistle

Thistle does not get jealous because he has no reason to.

No one in the Golden Kingdom is dumb enough to try and invoke his wrath especially when it comes to you.

You’re all he has left after Delgal disappeared.

Similar to Mithrun, he’s more possessive than jealous.

If he is spending time with you, he expects to have 100% of your attention.

He took a break on searching for Delgal to come and see you because he loves (is dangerously obsessed) with you! Don’t you appreciate it! Love him!

Even before the mess with Delgal when he was still a jester, I can’t imagine him being jealous.

He’s got such a one track mind, focusing on your happiness and Delgal’s, he wouldn’t really notice anyone else.

I sort of just got up an hour ago so mostly I’m tired lol

Most of the things I actively want to talk about are like specific interests and idk if you have also read/seen/listened to those but recently I’ve really been enjoying watching The Magnus Archives cosplayers on tiktok. I miss those characters tbh but I’m also really enjoying The Magnus Protocol and I know there are already people who have made really cool cosplays from that too so hopefully the skits and such will become commonplace shortly

I did eat breakfast and you’ll be happy to hear we don’t drink energy drinks or coffee (we have like a sensitive to bitter gene so coffee just tastes awful for everyone)

Thankfully for us all our medicine is for when an issue is happening or about to happen (e.g. migraines and allergies) so we don’t need to remember it everyday

I really should be working on my cosplays for our next convention but I just keep putting it off lol (I do like sewing but it causes a lot of pain and I like wearing the costumes even more). The cosplay plan is Luffy from One Piece, Leo from Ensemble Stars, and Mithrun from Dungeon Meshi if you’re curious (I need to buy more fabric but I kind of promised I’d make at least one thing before I did that, we kind of are overrun by fabrics lmao)

I did like it, I'm happy to see people writing stuff about Mithrun, and about Milsiril! I've already passed your fic around to all the people I know, so hopefully some of them will read it too :) I particularly enjoyed seeing Milsiril and her behavior being highlighted. Sometimes I run into hot takes that she isn't that bad, that she's a good mom to Kabru, but I think she's probably not a very healthy person to be around if you're unable to maintain boundaries... For example, if you're a child, or a disabled person who can't tell her no. (I don't think that she's actively, intentionally malicious, but I do think she's a bad parent...Even if she's a good teacher. Teaching and parenting are not always the same thing.) I think having her be the one to give Mithrun his glass eye, and showing her thinking of Mithrun like one of her dolls, is exactly spot-on, and a great bit of inspiration. Or course she thinks of him as a broken doll, and enjoys fixing him to look the way she wants, cutting his hair, dressing him up, etc. I particularly loved the way you described Mithrun barely acknowledging her, and how she kept talking to him, did things like force him to look at her, and said things like 'I can say whatever I want to you' and 'you should be grateful that the canaries need you'. I also liked the bit where she commented on preferring the ears of shorter-lived races, but how she knew better than to say anything out loud about it. And the bit where she briefly had Mithrun's attention, but then it immediately wandered away once she stopped talking about his obsession - or at least, seemed to wander away, obviously Milsiril's POV is going to be flawed. I don't think you explicitly say it in the fic, but I think your stance is that the elves are a deeply abelist society, and I agree with that. I think because they live so long, anything that reminds them that death and disability may one day come from them is considered the MOST socially taboo, and so they prefer to just not see or acknowledge that disability, disfigurement, or old age exist. I think a huge chunk of Milsiril's character is Ryoko Kui yelling at the top of her lungs into a megaphone "here's some red flags, but I'm not going to spell it out for you, connect the dots yourself"... Milsirl hates interacting with peers or people above her, prefers to play with dolls that she can completely control. The only people we know she willingly interacts with are children from short-lived races (so they have even fewer rights than elven children, she can do anything she wants with them and nobody will protest), Canary inmates (she's shown repeatedly with Helki, who has notched ears) and Mithrun, but only after Mithrun is catatonic. Writing about Mithrun when he's in a particularly limited state (deeply depressed? Partially catatonic? I'm not sure what the best words to describe it would be) is extremely challenging, and though you were writing about it from Milsiril's POV I think you did a great job, and offered some much-needed perspective! Honestly I'd love to read about Mithrun's POV from you, if you get inspired to write about something like that! And it made me think about what sort of interactions she must have had with Malthus (my version of Mithrun's brother, in my fics) because yes, she would have interacted with him for sure when she came to visit Mithrun! I can talk more about this if you (or anyone else) wants, just send me an ask - I don't want to hijack this one to talk about my own stuff though, lol.

finished reading dungeon meshi. i liked the ending a lot.

i loved how captain mithrun's story concluded. i'm honestly surprised that i... don't think i've ever seen any fanart of him cross my dash. him experiencing hope for himself after so long of feeling incomplete and wishing he could just vanish entirely was very touching. his and kabru's relationship is great

also really liked how laios and the winged lion wound up being foils of sorts, with food and desires being narratively connected. the winged lion had an insatiable desire to consume the desires of others, and a firm end goal to (hopefully) satisfy itself. laios on the other hand, despite his strong interests, had wandered through life with no real goals up until falin was eaten by the dragon--and even then he consistently made things up as he went, with the only constant being the act of making and eating food together with others.

i had read that some people disliked that laios became king of the golden kingdom, but i feel it makes a lot of sense for the story's themes and was well-established as a possibility long before it happened. aside from his personality, laios has a very arthurian feel to him. his armored visual design, his peculiar sword... and the lion imagery around him pulls double duty, connecting him to the winged lion and giving him a classic nobility vibe. even his name sounds like the word lion (and, considering that in japanese there's only a single character difference between the two--ライオス raiosu vs ライオン raion--i doubt that's a coincidence)

i suppose i could see an argument of, well, how is being a dungeon master bad but being a king is okay? and that's definitely something that a different story might have explored. but in this particular story, the focus isn't on the act of ruling at all. it's on the dichotomy of a safe prison where you get whatever you desire, versus an uncertain freedom where you'll have to work through difficult situations and occasionally accept failure in order to genuinely experience life and joy

It is quite the funny scene, honestly; Mithrun sits completely languidly, hands cupped together while a tiny kitten perches in them. It's little body is warm, and soft, and he can feel it's tiny paws on his hands. It's different to holding a monster, even small ones, that's for sure.

He soes as instructed and adjusts so that he is, hopefully, holding it a little lighter. He can't really tell. But the kitten doesn't seem to be too bothered, either way.

Grigori is a brute, a tough guy. A MUSCLE head. one that is proud of the image he puts on, despite everything...he's still a demi spiritual being whose intelligence if he cared enough to use it was exceeding most people.

And he has a weak spot for animals, his giant hands holding carefully the weak looking kitten that looks almost like the tall elf in front of him.
