gaius is really that guy who kept the knowledge that he learned from his masters (the priestesses) and yet he still consistently turned his back on them... or he uses it to counter them.

so are they like the villains to his eyes?

isn't it a sort of appropriation for him to teach merlin the things that the priestesses treasured?

coz let's be real, gaius and merlin weren't really friends of the old religion. but they use the old religion for their own causes just the same.

i think the old religion was pretty stratified. there were ranks and societies that you cant just enter easily. gaius collected information on all of these, built a database. And I think this was how he assisted in uther’s persecution of them.

and now he passes the knowlege to merlin, not only to educate him but also as a means to oversee the race of people that merlin is supposed to help rule over. the old religion had no choice that gaius had done this.

so gaius was already aware of merlin's destiny before he was born (seems that he knows of the complete prophecy), or he had been preparing the knowledgebase for merlin, or he was just extraordinarily lucky to land himself the most powerful magical creature as apprentice.

and here's the thing, not everyone from the magic community dig the idea of emrys or the once and future king ruling over them.

and gaius kind have been prepping him how to handle this?
