It was feeding time for the abandoned runts at the baby center of the Karlstad Animal Conservatory, and since Peter was on the roster for the week, he entered the closed off section, a basket of supplies dangling from his arm. After scrubbing down at the entrance and donning PPE, Peter carried on to the pens that housed each of the weaker baby animals left behind by their mothers. He prepared their bottles at the tables stationed outside, consulting the laminated and typically updated checklist of their bottle preparation. When stepping in, his tendency to cooed and giggle at them was so ingrained it was practically second nature.

          It was soothing, kneeling to them and holding the bottle for them as they greedily and messily guzzle the fatty liquid with added medication and vitamins. It certainly helped to cool the burning shame of what he finally accepted was a firm rejection. He still couldn’t fathom why he tried at all; he was already doing well with his own gigs, achieving success and recognition, minor as they are, on his channels, his freelance performances, and the work in the conservatory’s aquarium. He shouldn’t, he absolutely refused, to let himself be dragged down by one little flop. 

          He rubbed the panda cub’s neck and angled the bottle higher to make feeding easier for her. As he wiped at the milk spilling from the corner of her mouth, Peter felt his phone buzz. He dug through his outer layer into the pocket of his uniform and laid the phone on the ground. He put it on speaker and resumed rubbing Bao’s neck. “Hello?”

           “Hi, Mr. Kirkland! This is Jannie, from the Gunnar Didig Acting Company. I was wondering if you’re free to discuss your audition from a couple days ago?”

          “Oh!” Peter shifted about on his knees, straightening his PPE with one hand, and shaking his head at himself for forgetting that it was a phone call. “Oh, yeah, I’m free.”

          “Good! Well, I have some news I want to share with you. Although we have already chosen someone else for the role of Josef Loving--”

           Peter pursed his lips and stifled a sigh. 

           “We decided that it might be best to assign you as the understudy and have you try out another role that we feel you may better fit. In the meantime, we can partner you up with another actor of ours who can help prepare you for Loving’s musical number.”

          “That...sounds good,” Peter murmured, his cheeks burning anew with embarrassment. Of course, she was talking about Peter’s sad attempt at rapping.

          “Fantastic! Well, how about we reschedule you for another audition?”

          “Alright!” Peter said a little more cheerfully. He pulled up his calendar app and set an alert.

         With the date set, Peter threw his arms in the air. He bounced on his knees, pumping and waving his fists and shaking his head so hard that the hair net slipped off. “YEEEEESSSS! YES YES YESSSSS!”

          “Eeeeeengh!” Bao whined, pawing at the air and sniffing around.

          “Oops, sorry!” Peter cooed, coaxing the bottle nipple back into the cub’s mouth.

Five months, 56 job applications: job hunting at 50

For the last five months, I tried to find a job. I had been working as a freelancer for most of the year, but was finding the inconsistency wasn’t working for me (I live in the Bay Area and have a mortgage.) I set up job alerts, visited Indeed and LinkedIn on a regular basis (loved that sort by the last 24 hours option), and had my inbox flooded with job search results and updates several times a day.

I applied to 56 specific job openings.  

As a communications professional since 2004, I have seen and done it all. But, for this job search, I mostly focused on copywriter positions. I wanted to narrow my scope a little (but still stay in my sphere), and I knew I’d enjoy being focused on writing for my new position. I was a Marketing Writer at UCSF back in 2007, but over the years, I have held job titles such as Associate Director of Web Communications, Senior Digital Editor, and Director of Marketing and Communication. I have mostly worked in the education and non-profit worlds, had a nice stint working for a luxury real estate brokerage, and had some recent experience writing for a real estate tech company as a freelance writer.

Writing and editing has been part of my job functions since 2004. I have written/edited copy for catalogs, guides, websites, social media, products, marketing and advertising campaigns, blogs, paid social campaigns, newsletters, event programs, real estate listings, articles for local papers (as a ghostwriter for an executive), and on and on. If it required words, I wrote some. 

I applied for various positions over these five months: including: copywriter, content marketer, content writer, senior writer, digital writer, social media specialist, marketing writer, staff writer, website content manager, product marketer, and a few marketing/communications positions.  

Some things that happened to me along the way:

Had a great call with a hiring manager, sounded like everything was a go for next steps (I had very, very relevant experience), never heard from him again, saw the job reposted a month later and then reposted again a few months later.

Had a great call with a recruiter and then a nice video interview with a hiring manager, was told I was going to be sent a writing test (step 2), wasn’t sent the test, followed up with both people and was ignored/ghosted.

Had a video call with a friend of a friend (who owns a firm), was told it was going to be a chat about the company but it ended up being a full-blown interview by three people, thought it went okay, never heard from them again.

I prepared my cover letter and resume for a job I saw posted on a website. When I went to actually apply, the link did not work. I emailed the organization, and then was told that the job must have expired, sorry.

Had seven video or in-person conversations with people from a firm. Yes, I did say seven. Over the course of a month, I talked to potential teammates, the recruiter, the hiring manager, and the hiring manager’s boss. Had great feedback from all, was told a few days after the last interview that they were going with someone who had “a little more relevant experience,” but they’d like to find me a role at the company because they liked me, and said they were going to send me info on a new role coming up. I saw the role on LinkedIn a few days later, applied for the job and let the recruiter know, heard back once from the recruiter with a half-hearted response, contacted the hiring manager from position one, never heard back from anyone again.

Had a phone interview for a “digital copywriting” position at a large retailer. When the recruiter called, she said, “oh that position is in its final stages of interviews” (it was on LinkedIn for a week, and was still up at time of this phone call) so this call was about another writing position that included in-store signage and catalog copy.  So, spoke to her about this job position I didn’t apply for, nor had seen a description for, sent her samples she asked for from my online portfolio, was told they were passing on me because they were looking for someone with “retail romance writing” experience. She had said, “if you have any romance writing samples, send them along” during our conversation and I thought maybe I misheard her. (Did I mention I used to write descriptions for adult toys and products for Good Vibrations from 2004-2007.)

This job-hunting journey was a bit soul crushing for me, I’m not going to lie. I was vulnerable, hopeful, and excited to start working. I spent hours reading job descriptions (some companies are seeking “rockstars” and those that “live and breathe” for their work), considering if I had what it took to do the job. A thoughtful cover letter enabled me to imagine the ways I could contribute, and let me start envisioning being in the role. I made lists and notes of my relevant experience and how I felt I was a fit. If companies aren’t open to candidates with varied experience, which may appear in a slightly modified way than listed on the job description, they are passing on people that can, and will, do a great job. If they only want a “rockstar” that has done the same job elsewhere, they may not be bringing in the best candidate, but the easiest candidate. Job seekers, like me, with a diverse and winding career path, not only possess various skills but a capacity to learn and grow. Someone with a wide range of experience can bring in a new energy and new ideas to a job role. If a company is focused on only bringing in those with exact (“relevant”) experience, those that may be trying to break into a new company, or even a new field, won’t even be considered. Their resume is shoved to a bottom of a pile, and that is a shame.

Speaking of shame, the conduct of some companies in regards to contacting (or not contacting) job seekers is shameful. I don’t think anyone expects that someone will contact them regarding every application. However, if you are a recruiter or hiring manager that has actually spoken to a person via the phone or a video chat, and you don’t follow up with them AT ALL, that is a sad comment on your company and how you may treat your employees. When job seekers are left hanging, without closure, it adds insult to injury. A job seeker has shown interest in your company, and you have spoken to that person, do you really think it is appropriate to not close the loop? You hold the power. I know some of you are thinking, “but lawsuits!” and think I mean giving specific feedback about lack of skills or experience or non-desirable personality traits. No, I mean you make contact with a “thanks for applying but we’re moving forward with another candidate” note, or something, ANYTHING, that will allow them to close the book on the position and move on. Checking your email every hour to see if you’ve moved on to round two, have received that writing test, or have received a job offer, just plain sucks. As an older job seeker with varied experience, I was shut out of the process of finding a job in the Bay Area because I didn’t fit in certain boxes. I have been writing for years, but I haven’t worked at a digital marketing agency, nor have I written “romance” copy about chairs. If you are over 50, and are looking for a new job that is not exactly like a job you’ve had before, good luck friends. I’m rooting for you.

One last note. In order to receive just an initial phone call, it seems as though you have to have been referred by someone at the company. So, as the saying goes, it’s who you know, not what you know. It seems true x100 here in the Bay Area right now. I’m all for using your contacts, and I have definitely done it in the past, but when you see a job you really would like and have the skills for, but don’t see on LinkedIn that you know anyone at the company, it feels as though you are just throwing your resume to the wind. So, how does one overcome the disadvantage of not having a personal cheerleader already at the company?

In conclusion, I don’t really have advice, I just have questions and a sense of sadness and defeat. In the past five months, I went through a storm and my boat was tattered and torn. Job seekers, I wish you luck and strong sails.

Freelancing Success Tips in 2018

Success in freelancing doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistency, effort and value to build a name in the online industry. It is for a fact that freelancing can be an avenue to achieve financial freedom but it takes a lot of hard work, strong set of skills, and willingness to learn from others to be successful.

Freelancing Success Tips

I have been into freelancing for almost 5 years now. With my years of experience, I have come up with some freelancing tips that might be of help to really land on the job you want:

1. Focus on an Expertise and Master it. Know your craft. Assess yourself as to which area you are good at and capable of doing. It’s ok to be a master of all trades but it’s even better to stay focus on your field of expertise and master it.  Aligning yourself with the right task can be very easy once you are in your strength zone.

Once you have already identified your niche, master it. Mastery happens when one devotes himself to learning and improving his craft. When you are an expert in the field, it would establish your credibility as a freelancer; therefore, there is a greater chance for employment.

2. Update all your Branding Portfolios, Emails, Signatures, Skype, Freelancing Profiles, SMM sites, Freelancing Websites. All these things are vital in your freelancing career. Updating all your sites indicates that you are active and open for employment opportunity. It makes easy for clients to contact you and see how much you have accomplished in your job as a freelancer. In freelancing, make sure Build a Solid Brand in all your sites. Branding defines an overall perception of yourself to clients. They serve as your tool to market yourself in the competitive online industry. Make sure to highlight your skills and experiences and showcase your best work in order to easily notice by them.

3. Have an Outstanding  Resume Resumes are your ticket to get good impression for potential employers. You have to understand that employers will only take seconds to glance on each resume and getting noticed by them depends on how you present it. Make sure that your resume stands out by providing right information, highlighting your work experiences and arming up your professional background.

4. Take Every Application an Opportunity Never be afraid of rejection. Rejections will always be part of the process. Make use of the available connects to apply for a job. Millions of job opportunities offer online so make most of it by applying to different online sites. One of the factors why people have a hard time finding a client because fears haunt them from applying. You will never know if you are hired until you have tried applying.

5. Rock Your Interviews Interviews are like marketing yourself. When you market yourself, you have to understand that you’re not the only choice they have so you better get the best of yourself. The success rate of landing a job depends on how well you manage the interview. During the interview, make sure you set a good impression to the employer not only with your credentials but with your personality as well.

During the interview be sure to:

Be at least 5 minutes early or on time – Time is very essential to every employer. If you are late during the interview, they might associate it on how you perform at work.

Be Well-Prepared – Do the research. Make sure you have enough background of the company or the job you are applying for. Research also some possible questions that the employer might asked about.

Strive to Impress – Always set a good impression. Make an impact by not only presenting your work experiences                          background but also portraying notable personality and impressive work ethical values.

6. Have the Character Maintaining your credibility and integrity is very important. It builds trust which then lead to a long-term commitment between employee and employer. Thus, this requires good character in the workplace. Below are some of the characters we have to master.

Be Resourceful – Being resourceful means having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. With a resourceful mindset, you are driven to find ways to whatever setbacks that you might be facing in your freelancing journey. Technologies and internet are your best resources to get through in your freelancing tasks.

Have an Initiative – Initiative is the practice of looking for ways that you can contribute to the company, team, and boss. Bosses are busy people and not all the time that they are available to track your work and sit down with you to discuss every detail of the tasks. Mostly, they want their team members to be independent and with less supervision.

Deliver – Make sure to deliver right service. Don’t put yourself in jeopardy by compromising your integrity. Don’t overpromise to your client of something you are not sure of. Just be honest of what you can only do and what you can achieve.

Be on Time – Be on time when there is client call. Be on time during interview and most especially be on time in submitting work on its deadline. Little things like these show how determine and passionate you are in your work.

Be Proactive – Being proactive means you have taken careful and thoughtful steps to choose an appropriate paths. This means you are making timely and effective actions to whatever problems you might encounter. You must have the ability to foresee obstacles and taking ownership and accountability to it by confronting the problems head on before it grows to an overwhelming dilemma.

7. Keep the Faith Above all, keep your faith grounded in God’s hand. If you have waited long-enough for you to have your first client, don’t stop applying and don’t stop believing. After all, God is a giver of all things and He knows that there will always be a time for everything and for sure there will be a time for you too.

Oh gosh, it’s been so long I’m afraid I don’t know how to put words together.

I was checking some old stuff lately and then I was thinking about this blog and then I read my last post and… I knew I had to write something here. To give an update – even if just to myself.

Things changed, scrambled apart and together again, and I ended up going on crazy adventures.

So here’s the story (prepare yourselves because it is a bit long):

It begins after that course/experience I was going to participate in, which was awesome and I met incredible people, but that despite the positive feedback, still left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. I knew it wasn’t really what I wanted to be doing, not quite where I wanted to spend my energy.

So back to usual life I went: freelancing through Christmas and New Year and feeling like shit, month after month, and realizing that the plans I had  at the beginning of that year were far and formless. And I couldn’t understand what I could DO to change things. I was HOPELESS, good lord. STILL hopeless.

And then I wanted to go away – FAST. It was just what I knew. I had nothing to lose, I was not earning enough money to be happy with the work I was doing, my anxiety was increasing and increasing and increasing and I was turning into a strange monster I suspect was eating humans at the dead of the night.

So without thinking too much into it I jumped into a plan that had stayed on the sidelines of my life for some time: I bought a plane ticket to Portugal to spend some months with my aunt(who lives there).

And really, if I had this option, why wouldn’t I take it?

My only plan was to get there, find some job at a coffee shop or restaurant and work for 3 months and see where it would lead me. I would probably meet new people, have new experiences and I would be able to BREATHE. And if nothing went well, I could at least earn some money and travel a bit. Good, right?

So in last April there I went, not really knowing what to expect.

I had never stayed so long far from home and people told me I would miss everything a lot. But for some reason I was not scared and was really calm about it all. I REALLY missed home only once, during my second week there – and I believe it was more because I was having one of those days than anything else. I mean, I talked to my mom everyday through video call and messaged my friends all the time so? 

But still of course things never go as swiftly as expected.

First I tried finding different and cool courses to take so I could have different experiences. But I found only a few that sounded interesting and that weren’t too expensive.

Then I started looking for work (part-time) – at the beginning at specific places and then afterwards everywhere. (THROW YOUR RESUMES EVERYWHERE)

No success for the first 2 months.

And then I got an opportunity to work at a restaurant – full time, night shift. It was far from what I wanted but I took it. It was hella fun and interesting. It gave me good money, I meet fun people! Gained crazy experience! Served a lot of crazy people!

But it was also extremely tiring. I would get home 1h30 AM, drained. So after a month and a half I knew I couldn’t do it anymore – and one of the courses I was interested in would be during work time, and I really wanted to do it. So I decided to try and change my shift, but not being able to do it I ended up quitting.

I took the course. It was meh. Not what I expected, and shorter than what I wanted. By then it was already August. I felt stupid for leaving the job for something that really didn’t help me much.

I felt again stuck and lost.

And then my aunt started to say how I should try and find a work in my area – which is Design, which made me feel sick just to think about, which I was trying to get away from by going there. And bless her, my aunt is a very nice person who gave me a place to stay and cared for me a lot – but she started to make me go crazy a bit. Because she started to push at all my anxiety buttons and “what I was going to do now” and “what were my plans” and “how I should do this and do that”.

One day I had a fight with her because of it, and called my mom crying, eager to get out of there. I had already bought the ticket back when I went – for September –  and I just had to wait one month and I would go home and everything would be alright.

But it still felt like a waste, going away. I was there, in a place full of possibilities, and going back home where I had nothing to expect? It sounded bad.

So I remembered this little seed of an idea that I had come upon on my first month there: WWOOFing. An idea that I was a bit afraid to try, to be honest.

It sounded too crazy, too far from who I was. Probably not what others were expecting I would do. But at that time I was a bit desperate and just willing to go anywhere. So I sent a message to a farm, then to another, and then decided I would delay my flight to the end of the year and use all my time to go to those farms. I was excited, truly excited, for the first time in months.

I mean, how I didn’t do this before? I love nature. I’m always aching to be near it. I feel it deep in my bones all the time and just seeing a beautiful place full of nature makes my heart beat fast. I could even fucking become a tree. So it looked like the perfect option.

And let me tell you: I had A BLAST. The best 3 months in my life. I loved being in the middle of nowhere. I loved working with my body, planting. I loved getting dirty and putting my hands in the soil. I loved going on walks on my free time. I also loved meeting new people – people like minded. WONDERFUL people, from all around the world. I did crazy things that I wouldn’t ever think of doing before: including a trail in the middle of nowhere to try and find an abandoned convent (that me and a friend actually discovered it was out of bonds for the public lol).

It was fun. It was a marvelous experience. And it put me right where I felt I should be. I never felt so fearless as I did during those months.

And despite being introverted and very concerned about personal space, I discovered that I can live with lots of people, sleep in a room with strangers, be ok in ANY place. And actually befriend everyone.

I don’t know, I felt so empowered, so good about myself. So confident.

And then I learned more about Permaculture and Organic Farming and all things related to nature and sustainability. And really, I just want to work with it. I knew I wanted to work near nature and I was thinking of ways of doing it, and this experience showed me different possibilities. Amazing paths.

So now I’m going back to Portugal next month, and I will be staying in an ecovillage where I hope I will learn lots of things and see even more possibilities. I’m planning for the future and am extremely excited in trying to construct my own path. To dance along it.

And that’s it. This is what I wanted to share. I think it is a wonderful follow up to the last post I left here. Passion and Purpose. Because at that time I was feeling lost and anxious, just trying to find things that I liked doing. I wished and wished I could do the right kind of wandering, the one that would give me new perspectives. And then I went out there and DID tried things and it worked (it fucking worked, can you believe it?).

I also  realized it doesn’t have to be so complicated. Maybe your passion and purpose is something as simple as being close to nature, like me.

Don’t let that critic inner voice say ‘You should, you should, you should’.

Hear the wants, the needs. Find what makes your heart ache.

Think about something that if someone told you ‘You know, we are deleting this from life’, you would get out of your way and fight for it, tooth and nail.

And well, yeah I am still concerned about earning money and in finding jobs in this area (maybe even going back to college?). It will be hard. But I’m willing to try it all – and I’m so so full of energy.

And most important: I’m happy.
