I've been reading and rereading and forgetting and then rediscovering and getting obsessed again with the Robert Langdon series (Dan Brown books in general, honestly). All throughout these chaotic years, only one thing has stayed constant: I still do not know whether I want to BE Robert Langdon or be WITH him.
yes i have a crush for a middle aged book man who is a professor of symbology at Harvard because how can i not be? i swear to god maybe i’m just attracted to intelligence or whatever, but whenever he talks about something, i’m genuinely in love, puppy eyes too. i love this man so much. and his little awkward ass is adorable. he isn’t even awkward like that. plus, he’s so sassy. y’all don’t notice it i fear but yes, he’s a sassy queen. he isn’t it that much, but he is. and again, his smarty pretty mind makes me wanna kiss him. he’s so attractive in my eyes. especially when he gets in trouble, he is so funny and smart too. and he’s a deep core feminist? like, more feminist than women i know. and he is interested in religion symbolism? oh my god. and what about the whole da vinci code? huh? he’s my man. i don’t care. he’s so hot to me. i wish i could make love to his mind. incredible man. okay bye
#it's more the first one honestly#he is goals#i'm in love with his mind and knowledge#i want to be as educated and intelligent as he is#and solve ancient mysteries and conspiracies#and have crazy adventures in beautiful historic cities#is that too much to ask for?#robert langdon#dan brown#dan brown books#the davinci code#da vinci code#angels and demons#and so on#i really recommend those books#they're amazing#once I've started one i can't put it down#i never get tired of them

Les aspirations les plus absurdes et les plus téméraires ont parfois conduit à des succès extraordinaires.
- Vauvenargues
St. Moritz has been a famous health resort in Engadine since the 19th century. At first, it was only frequented by spa guests, before the village developed into a high alpine sports centre, and for a time it was a playground for the rich and famous. There’s still some of that element present but not as in its hey day of the 70s. For nine months of the year it’s just another picturesque village in the gorgeous Swiss Alps, with Lake St. Moritz lying at its heart.
Crucially it is quietly forgotten by the outside world. Residents can breathe and go about their daily chilled out lives. For those precious nine months it was great to hike and ski there as my boarding school wasn’t too far away from getting there. But the other four months of the year, the high season, it gets flood with skiers and altogether more showy crowd.
The frozen surface of the lake, which can only be described as a desert of snow, now serves as a symbol of the resort itself. From nine months of natural bliss to four months of chaos and madness. Every time the ice lends its surface to polo tournaments, horse races, and the wealthy and beautiful make the pilgrimage down the mountains from their grand hotels, St. Moritz seems to transform. St. Moritz’s newest ‘gimmick’ for the past three years or so has been to serve the International Concours of Elegance St. Moritz - or The ICE St. Moritz - as a kind of classic car museum with an adventurous character.
Since the first ever The ICE St. Moritz in 2019, historic rally cars have been exhibited to the sports car-crazy public on the opening day, before demonstrating their horsepower on the ice racetrack on the second day of the event. However, the fact that The ICE is taking place on Lake St. Moritz, of all places, is no coincidence. In 1985, a group of Scottish and British sportsmen drove their vintage Bentleys to St. Moritz to celebrate the centenary of the Cresta Run (an eccentric and high spirited toboggan amateur race). As part of the festivities, they drove their cars on the racecourse across the frozen Lake St. Moritz.
This year, however, the ICE St. Moritz evolved slightly differently. For the first time, the event was held on two days: Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February. On the first day, the lake was transformed into an open-air museum, where the jury evaluated the cars on display from an aesthetic perspective. Then, on the second day, the actual race took place, whereupon the jury evaluated the classic cars from a performance perspective.
This year there were five category winners. In the ‘Open Wheels’ category, the 1958 Maserati 420M/58 “Eldorado” held its own. Meanwhile, the ‘Barchettas on the Lake’ category crowned the Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II from 1955 as the winner. My personal favourite, the aforementioned Ferrari 250 Testarossa ‘Lucybelle’ emerged as the winner in the ‘Le Mans 100’ category. As expected, Lancia Strato’s HF Zero of 1970 came out on top in the ‘Concept Cars & One Offs’ category. Last but not least, judges crowned the 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Drophead Coupé as the winner of the ‘Queens on Wheels’ category.
The evening gala took place at Badrutts Palace, which towers over the city like a castle with its high stone walls. In the stimulating semi-darkness and under shimmering candlelight, riders, collectors, enthusiasts, the public and media from all over the world celebrated the conclusion of one of the most anticipated competitions in the Engadine. Overall it’s spectacular fun and contrary to what one might believe it really does draw the car enthusiast crowd rather than the snob mob. It’s a very chilled event and bags of fun.

This Is Bad, Billy
Part 2 - You're Special
Description: 1961. Joanie is a dreamer. She dreams of Hollywood, fashion and handsome men. Her favorite is the actor Billy Skarsgård. When she works as a volunteer at the hospital she meets him in an unexpected way and comes closer to him than she thought was possible.
Characters: AU Bill Skarsgård, here called Billy. He's inspired by real life Bill but also the character Clark Olofsson in the Netflix series Clark. The rest is my own characters.
Setting: This story is set in the 60s L.A and a smaller town close to L.A.
Warnings: 18+, historical preferences, mental health problems, mental illness, smut.
Even if it was late it was still quite bright out and it helped me see him in the distance. He was leaning against the hood of a car while he smoked. He made perfect rings of the smoke and I wondered if he did anything sloppy. He felt like the type that perfected every artwork he did. When I came closer he looked up at me and smirked with amusement. I knew why he looked like that and also why he bit his lip. I had been forced to wear my uniform so my parents would believe I was going to work so now I was walking towards him in my white nurse dress. I felt silly but knew other men had said I was cute in it. Maybe Billy would think the same?
"Oh, my own little nurse," he said when I came closer. He threw his cigarette on the ground and pushed his hands down the front pockets of his pants. They must have been his own pants but the sweater he wore seemed to be from the ward, I had seen other patients in similar ones. I blushed at his words but tried to look confident and grown up, like a femme fatale in a movie even if something told me I wasn’t doing it so very well.
"It's not my car but do you want to take a ride?"
I swallowed hard and fiddled with a button on my spring coat.
"Who's car is it?"
"Shawn's. He's a friend."
Billy opened the door for me and hypnotized by his smile I jumped into the passenger seat of the car. My mother had never even let me ride with the boys I went to school with, now I would ride in the evening with a young man. A famous, crazy actor. I giggled at the thought and it made Billy laugh softly when he jumped in next to me. He gave me a smile and licked his lips.
"I hope you're in for some trouble," he said and wiggled his brows before starting the car. I didn't know what he meant by trouble, only that I just wanted to find out. If it was real trouble then it would be that way. I just wanted the adventure.
I looked at Billy when he was driving with one hand. We sat silent in the Simca car. It wasn't anything special and I wondered what kind of car Billy owned. Living in L.A he must have a car, or maybe he had several? Was he rich? I didn't have a clue how much he earned and I realized didn't know anything about him.
"How old are you?" I asked and looked at his hands. My mom had said hands were a good clue to how old a person was. His hands were big but elegant, slender with smooth pale skin, like he hadn't done any practical work in his life.
"26, how old are you?" He asked and looked at me up and down. "18 or something?"
"Nineteen. I don't go to high school or anything like that. I work and…" I didn't have anything more to say to prove I was an adult but Billy didn't seem to react to it.
"You're from Sweden?" I said and looked out over the city. I didn't have a clue where he was driving and it had started to get dark.
"Mm," he just said and continued to look at the road.
"When did you move here?"
"I was your age."
I nodded a little when I understood he didn't want to talk about it. Even if he was standoffish I felt surprisingly calm. It was quick for me to calm down in his company even if I couldn't stop admiring his special beauty.
We rode through the countryside, by the ocean. It was quiet in the car but I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. I just looked at the beautiful surroundings and listened to the sounds of the car. I could smell faintly of an aftershave, but not the heavy sort my dad used.
Billy cleared his voice and I woke up from my trance-like state.
"You're different… I thought the first thing you would ask was why I am in the loony bin."
I looked at Billy who continued to look at the road but his expression had changed. He didn't look as tough any more.
"Of course I thought about it… But I don't get the feeling that you're one of them? Or… Are you?" I looked at him examining even if I felt quite indifferent to the answer.
Billy laughed uncomfortably and drove out on the highroad.
"I don't know. I guess in their eyes I am…"
I swallowed hard and looked down at my hands. I didn't know what that meant but I became worried for a few seconds then I looked at Billy's face again. He looked down at his lap and looked so fragile. Maybe he just was depressed? That was something I could handle and he hadn't shown signs for something else.
"You know, doctor's pretend to know so much. Pretend to have answers and evidence for everything. They say they know who I am, that I have these kinds of problems but they don't have an answer for anything. They just make it up. Typical doctors."
He ranted and sounded upset. I didn't say anything. Not because I was the doctor's daughter but because I actually didn't know if he was right. I wanted to believe my father wasn't like that but while listening to other doctor's I had wondered how much was a guess of what they said.
"I'm sorry," he said and looked at me with worried eyes. "I shouldn't talk so much."
I nodded a little but gave him a small smile.
"I don't think you are one of them… I think you're just… Special," I said with glowing cheeks and looked down at my lap. Billy made a sound, a happy sound and laid his hand on my thigh. I had never had a boy's hand on my thigh before and I looked at it a while before I laid my own hand on top of it. The back of his hand was warm and smooth and I dragged my fingers over it just to feel the smoothness of his skin.
"So… How well do you know who I am?" He asked with a teasing smile and I felt my face get beet red at once. I didn't know what to say. I thought about every picture of him I've cut out from magazines and every movie he was in that I had seen so many times.
"Ehh… Quite well I guess? You're quite famous," I said and looked out from the window of the car. He drove up a slope where there wasn't any lighting or other cars.
Billy just nodded at my words and licked his lips.
"But there’s not much about you," I said and hoped he would tell me more.
"Like what, you mean?" He said and parked by a viewpoint so we could look out over the city under the Hollywood sign. It was beautiful and it took a while for me to answer as I was admiring the view.
"Like age… If you're married…" I looked down at my hands embarrassed. I looked up at him and he succeeded in quickly catching my gaze. I drowned in his big green eyes while he smiled kindly towards me.
"I'm not married…" I couldn't stop myself from smiling a blushy smile but got nervous again when I remembered what I've actually read about him.
"They call you a bad boy…"
Billy threw his head back and laughed.
"Do they?"
I nodded and watched him closely when he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. I saw that he was trying to come up with an answer to that. He rubbed his stubbly jaw while I looked down at my little pearl ring I had inherited from my grandmother.
"I guess I like parties… And girls…"
He shrugged his shoulders and smiled towards me softly. I just looked down at my nurse dress and thought about what that meant. Did he kiss a lot of girls? Or did he just have many female friends?
"Oh… What are you doing with the girls?"
He laughed embarrassed but then licked his lips and looked at me up and down.
"I can show you?"
I didn't know how I knew but something about his energy told me he wanted my flower. My virginity.
"No… No…" I giggled bashfully and continued to look at my ring. "I'm a good girl."
Billy smiled at me and laid his hand on my thigh again.
"You can be a good girl anyway."
I shook my head but smiled. It was a compliment knowing he wanted to get so close to me but I knew a good girl waited for marriage. If you weren't a cheap girl or one of all those stupid girls who moved to L.A. to work as secretaries.
"Okay, I won’t force you or anything. Such things are beneath my dignity. I am a gentleman. Most often." He smirked as he put a cigarette between his lips.
"What do you want to do in the future? Do you want to be a nurse?"
I shook my head fast and watched him light his cigarette and took a deep drag.
"No. I want to do something more special."
"You should be a model," he said like it was obvious and looked me up and down. I laughed and shook my head. I was far from a model.
"I'm way too ugly for that. And tall. And skinny."
He nodded as if he thought the same but then smiled.
"That trend will be huge soon. You can see it in England. Skinny girls in the shortest skirts. They think I'm really handsome there. Here in the US I look too weird to be the handsome actor."
I looked at him with skepticism but I also a bit hurt.
"You think I'm ugly?"
"What?" He gave me a confused look. "No, no. God no. But you're more like Audrey Hepburn than Marilyn Monroe. You're more original." He took my hand in his and hugged it then he lifted it to his plump lips and kissed the back of it. My heart started to beat so hard it felt like I would have a heart attack. Maybe he could have my flower after all?
We sat by the viewpoint and talked about ordinary things but Billy also shared fantastic stories from his Hollywood life. It was obvious he first was uncomfortable doing so but did it because I loved it so much. I turned so I could sit with my back against the door and took off my flats. Billy tried to make himself comfortable too but his long legs made it hard for him to change his position.
"There is a blanket in the trunk. Maybe we can sit outside a bit? You can borrow my jacket."
Even if I was really comfortable with Billy now I blushed at the thought of borrowing his jacket. It was such a thing boyfriends and girlfriends did but I longed to have the smooth looking leather jacket over my shoulders. I saw it laying in the backseat and I imagined it smelling of his aftershave and cigarettes.
"Okay…" I said and turned so I could jump out from the car. I still had my light blue spring coat over the nurse dress but it was thin and didn't give me any warmth, not like how a leather jacket would.
Billy spread out a green plaid blanket in front of the car then he looked at me with a smile.
"Is it cold? Do you want my jacket?"
I blushed again but really I wanted to tread the waters more so I walked up closer to him. He really was tall. He had always looked tall on screen but I had thought it was some kind of camera trick.
"Yes please," I said even if it wasn't that cold. But of course I wanted his jacket.
He laid the heavy leather jacket over my shoulders and wrapped me in it from behind. He dragged his hands over my arms and looked down at me over my shoulder. Some of his hair hung down in his eyes which made him look handsome and really dangerous. I just wanted him to kiss me the way he did with the girls in the movies.
"Better?" He said softly and continued to drag his hands up and down my arms. I wrapped the jacket around myself tighter and nodded. We stood like that for a while, Billy behind me, holding me close and I listened to my heart in my ears. I had never been so close to a boy and Billy was a man. Twenty six years old and seemed to have been with several women before me. That thought didn't scare me, instead I wanted him even more. A man with experience.
We sat close together on the blanket and while talking about awful movies we had seen and getting some insider gossip from Billy. He laid his arms around my shoulders and dragged me closer to him. The position wasn't really that comfortable because his arm laid heavy around me and to be able to rest my head against his shoulder I was forced to sit in a weird way. I really tried to say to myself it was nice but it really wasn't. My back hurt and I couldn't sit still.
"Are you uncomfortable?" He asked as he looked down at me while I tried to find a more comfortable position. I looked at his kind eyes and smiled a little.
"Ehh… A little?"
Billy smirked and laid down on his back on the blanket.
"Come here instead," he said, patting his chest. The knitted sweater had moved to the side and I could see his naked collarbone. I giggled a little and laid down half on top of him. It was nicer and I could listen to his even heartbeat at the same time. It was so dark now we could see constellations and to my surprise could Billy name quite many of them. I shifted between looking at his profile and the starlit sky even if I knew what star I wanted to watch. He shone brighter than all of them.
He must have felt how I watched him because while I stared he looked down at me and hugged my waist with a big strong hand. He moved so we laid nose against nose on the blanket, then he pressed his soft lips against mine. It was heavenly so when he continued I tried my best to follow his movement even if I didn't have any kissing experiences. He made a sound of amusement and took a break to look at me.
"Emm… Can you, like, let my tongue in?" He said and dragged me closer with a teasing smile on his lips.
"Oh… Yeah," I blushed hard and lowered my gaze.
"Just follow me okay? It's not that difficult," he said and pushed my hips against his. I could feel that he was different from me between his legs and thought back on the image of him naked in the bed. Maybe it was the fantasy about his sex that made me follow his movement better because after just a few seconds of tongue kissing I could follow Billy in his heated kisses and I moaned when our tongues danced with each other. He groaned and dragged me up so I laid on top of him and the movement made the three top buttons of my dress open up so he could see the white lace of my slip. Billy took a break and looked at my face in his hands, then down at my slip and my hardened nipples through the thin fabric.
"You're so sexy…" he whispered and bit his lip. He looked evil watching me with a hooded gaze but I wasn’t scared. This was the most amazing thing that had ever happened to me and I knew I would give my flower to him. I wanted him so badly and would do anything in my power to lose my virginity to him instead of someone like Jacob. Billy was sexy, manly and strong. Famous and mysterious. Sexy. I giggled and was just happy he wanted to be close to me so when he pushed down the sleeves of my nurse dress and then the thin straps of the slip I just let him. He looked at my chest in the moonlight and I felt beautiful and strong by seeing his big eyes on my breasts. My mom would have killed me if she saw how easily I let a boy close but this was Billy. Billy Skarsgård.
"Can I touch them?" He said softly and pushed down the dresses so much my arms were free. I thought about covering myself with my hands but I liked how big and round Billy's eyes became from seeing my naked upper half.
"Okay…" I giggled again and played with my fingers. I didn't know where to put my hands and when Bill's long fingers started to play with my nipples I didn't know what to do at all. The sensation made a hot stream flow down between my legs and when he continued to massage my breasts it felt like I peed myself. My panties were so wet by seeing big, beautiful Billy playing with my breasts and he did it so softly and did teasing circles on my areolas.
"Is that nice?" He whispered when he realized I squirmed in his hands.
"Yes…" I said and pressed my legs together. Billy moved me so that I laid on my back on the blanket and looked at me from top to toe.
"Do you want me to play with your pussy?"
The word made me open my eyes in horror. I had never heard anyone say it that way, just some stupid boys in school, but not like it was a sexy word. But it was. Everything that came out from Billy's lips was sexy but it wasn't time for it. I pressed my legs together harder, not by arousement this time but because of panic. If he got my panties off he would probably be able to stick his… Thing in me.
I sat up and covered my chest with my hands.
"Ehh… Maybe next time?" I said and tried to say it sexily. Billy moved away from me and laughed warmly.
"So there will be a next time?" He said and laid my hair over my shoulder. I nodded quickly.
"Yes. Yes. And I think I’ll work on the ward too so…"
Billy smiled a little uncomfortable and looked out over the view.
"Hopefully you won’t see anything scary. It's not a place for a young, fine woman like you."
I smiled a little and shrugged my shoulders. I let go of my breasts to be able to take his hand in mine and Billy was quick at looking at my chest again. How I loved having his attention on me.
Even if Billy had many hours left in freedom he drove me home by midnight. I wondered why when I knew he didn't need to be back at the ward until 5 AM, when they woke the patients up. Maybe he wanted to be the gentleman he had said he was because it didn't feel like he had lost interest in me. I actually felt the opposite because the whole way back to my little town he held my hand in his big warm palm. It felt like I was in love and I probably was. He was the first boy I had been with all alone and now also been so close to. I looked at him bashfully and wondered if he was my boyfriend now but I didn't dare to ask. If he had been with other women he maybe didn't feel that intense feeling of love as I did.
"Is it something?" He asked when he noticed I just sat and watched him. I shook my head with a smile even if my head was full of questions.
"Do you want to meet me again tomorrow night?" He asked and smirked a bit cockily. He probably already knew the answer to that question.
"Yes." I just said with a blushing smile.
“How do you live? Like, do you have your bedroom next to your parents?"
He parked the car at the beginning of my street so my parents wouldn't see his car if they were awake.
"No, we have our bedrooms on the second floor but they have theirs at the end of the hallway to the right while I have mine to the left. Why?"
Bill smirked a little and licked his lips.
"Tomorrow, can I visit? In your bedroom?"
I felt my ears heat and my heart rythm go up. I don't even know how he would be able to come into my bedroom at night without using the entrance door.
"Can… Does that work?" I asked and looked at Bill's handsome face. He smiled reassuringly and nodded.
"I will find a way. Believe me."
I nodded nervously and looked discreetly down between his legs. Did he want my body then?
"We can just hang out. Maybe just cuddle a little?" He said like he had seen my doubt. He smiled sweetly and played with my hand in his and dragged his thumb over the pearl ring. I giggled and nodded. I believed him when he said he would find a way. He was probably creative.
"Can I kiss you goodbye?" He said softly and leaned closer to me. His eyes shifted between looking at my eyes and my lips. I just nodded and soon felt his soft lips against mine. He kissed more determinedly now and I felt more sure about how to do it. It was really nice and it felt like he thought so too because he groaned and pulled me closer by the waist. I wished we didn't have the gear shift between us. I giggled against his lips when I realized again who I was kissing. Billy Skarsgård! I was kissing Billy Skarsgård!
×××
It didn't seem like my mother had noticed that I disappeared in my daydreams more than I otherwise did. She probably was too uninterested in my extravagant dreams to actually care. She forced me to help her make a cake for my father instead. It was his 53rd birthday and when he came home we would celebrate him. And when my parents were asleep Billy would jump in through my window. Like in a movie.
"So what did you think about Jacob?" My mom asked while the cake was in the oven.
Who? Jacob?
"Ehh…" I said to win time.
"Wasn't he sweet? Did you hear that he has taken a course on how to be a good husband? Few men do such things. Care so much."
Oh. Right. Jacob with a green bowtie. The pattern was similar to the blanket I had made out with Billy on. I blushed with a small smile.
"Aw! You like him!" Said my mother teasingly and excitedly happy. If she just knew what I was really thinking about. I tried to come up with something to say but maybe it was better if my parents believed I liked Jacob, then they wouldn't try to matchmake me with someone else.
"He was nice," I said with a shoulder shrug but pretended to be embarrassed. My mom laughed and gave me a hug, like it was something to celebrate.
"Maybe we can invite him this weekend?" She said and gave me an expecting smile and I smiled back but really I wondered if I would be with Billy then too.
"Sure… But I work on Friday."
It wasn't a lie, I was but I didn't know if I would continue in the psychiatric ward. Maybe it wasn't a place for me, just like Billy had said but I just wanted to see him as much as I could.
When my father got home we celebrated him with the double frosted chocolate cake he loved. As usual he let me blow out the candles even if I was now an adult woman. He seemed to have some problems understanding that I had become older and wanted me to still be his little girl. It was just a year ago he had tried to get me to sit in his lap but then my mother actually said no. It wouldn't look good, especially not if a young man would see us. No boy wants to marry a daddy's girl. But I wasn't really a daddy's girl and the whole family knew that. My father had worked most of my childhood and I couldn't say I knew him or that he knew me. My father just believed he knew me and saw me as one of his perfect daughters even if I wasn't. Far from it. I was close to not getting a grade in neither math or science because I couldn't focus and some teachers had even called me stupid. It wasn't that kind of daughter a doctor should have but my dad probably didn't even know that. My mother never told him about the bad things and let him believe I was just as perfect as my sister. Or maybe even a future doctor.
All of us went to bed at 9 PM but most often my mother let me stay up to read. She thought I read Jane Austen but I usually just stayed up to do different hairstyles and practice painting the perfect winged eyeliner. I think I had learned to master that by now so that night I made an elegant updo on myself and painted eyeliner and my lips. I thought about what to wear but some sort of confidence took over so I wore just my thin slip. I looked like some actress in a french movie and the only thing that was missing was a cigarette in a holster.
I laid down in bed and tried to lay sensually but it was hard and especially when I realized I would need to wait for Billy a long time. I didn't know when he would come and even he didn't know when he could come. For a second I wondered if he maybe would give up but that didn't feel like Billy. I already had a feeling he was the sort that stuck to his plans.
I hadn't even noticed that I had fallen asleep when I woke up to a light knocking on my window. I didn't remember why I was lying in my slip with my hair up until it knocked again.
Billy. He had come!
I looked at myself fast in the mirror and fixed myself. I didn't look as good as I had done before I fell asleep but still looked good. A Brigitte Bardot I would never become.
Billy sat outside off the window on the little roof over the windows on the first floor. It was really thin so I couldn't understand how he was able to come up there. When I moved the yellow curtain away I met his mischievous eyes. Oh Lord, wasn't he the cutest?
It was a task to open the window without Billy falling down the roof but I noticed he was much more lethal than I thought. He was tall, broad shouldered but he seemed to have an easy time moving around, sometimes even like a dancer. He jumped into my room and landed smoothly on my rug. I couldn't stop myself from giggling and that made him smile big and drag me close to his body.
"Hey…" he said softly and kissed my cheek. I giggled again and hugged him around his neck.
"Missed me?" He said and hugged me back around my waist so my dress moved with his hands. He patted it down again but dragged his fingertips over the silky fabric.
"I've missed you," I just said and gave him a warm smile. I wondered again if he was my boyfriend. It felt like it. It felt like it even more when he kissed me deeply and pushed my body even closer to his.

Visiting the Philippines
Before leaving Asia I visited the Philippines with my dad, as he is friends with a couple who live there and invited us to visit them.
The Philippines consists of more than 7,600 islands. We were on the largest and most populous island, Luzon, which is where Manila is located. My dad’s friends whom we stayed with reside outside of Tagaytay, a city that is technically less than two hours south of Metro Manila, but with Philippine traffic it takes longer than that.
I thought Vietnam had crazy traffic, but getting around there was much easier than in the Philippines. My dad’s friends have a hired driver because the roads are honestly insane to navigate there. In addition to cars and motorbikes, the popular modes of transportation that locals use in the Philippines are Jeepneys and tricycles. Jeepneys are essentially the public buses that people can easily hop on and off, and they’re often decorated to be flashy and colorful. They can get quite very crowded, though; we saw several that had people seated on the roof and hanging out of the back. Tricycles are basically motorcycles that have been outfitted with covered sidecars to transport more passengers. These are also often colorful and overflowing with people. While it is cool to see these forms of transportation that are unique to the Philippines, they contributed a lot to the difficult traffic.
Despite spending many hours in the car, our hosts showed us around to some great sites. Tagaytay overlooks Taal Volcano, an active volcano that erupted as recently as 2020. One day we took a boat out on Taal Lake to see the Volcano Island. Due to the volcanic activity this island is supposed to be closed to inhabitants, but people still live there to farm and fish and preserve their homes.
We also went to a beach further south to swim. The water was very clear and calm, making for a pleasant swim. The beach we were at also had boats and water toys available, so we road a banana boat out to sea that allowed us to see more of the coastline and feel some sense of adventure.
For our last day we visited Metro Manila to see some historic sites. We went to Fort Santiago, which provides a lot of insight into colonial history. There is also a museum on site there about José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines who was executed in 1896 for his role in inspiring the revolution against the Spanish rule. We also visited several churches. The majority of Filipinos are Catholic so there are many beautiful churches around.
Of course I cannot forget to cover the food. Filipino food is AMAZING and I am so sad that it is not easy to find where I live in the US. I left the Philippines well-fed with a stomach full of Halo-halo, Adobo, Chicharon, Lanzones, Mangoes, Pomelo, Sinigang, Lumpia, Kare-kare, Pancit, Milkfish, Bibingka, and Buko Pie. This is not Filipino food, but we also got KBBQ as a treat and it was only about $10 USD. One of the things I will miss most about SE Asia is the availability of incredible food.
Overall I really enjoyed the Philippines and was glad we got to stay with people who live there to see some things that the average tourist would not. Besides the sites and food that I wrote about I also loved how warm and welcoming Filipinos were, and I would love to go back some day. Our hosts recommended Palawan or Boracay for the most beautiful spots so those are now on my bucket list.

◈ TAG NINE PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER!
favourite colour(s): Royal/sapphire blue! I also love: navy, cool-toned red, pastels like blush pink/lilac/dusty blue, cream, and black.
favourite flavour(s): Not sure what qualifies as a flavor per se, but my favorite foods are cannoli, chicken tikka masala, champagne, tea, spaghetti carbonara, and lemon Fanta. My favorite restaurants are French, Italian, Korean, and Japanese mostly. If it's found on an afternoon tea tiered stand, I want to put it in my face. And I've been craving a steak bake and a sausage roll from Greggs for years now (don't get me started on Wetherspooons curry club and Nando's).
favourite genre(s): drama and romance, by a long shot. Bonus if historical. I like some fantasy, action-adventure, and comedy on occasion.
favourite music: I like pop/rock, classical, pop/rock goes classical, and soundtracks. I grew up on 50s and 60s music as a kid and my more influential music years (teens through college) would be anywhere from the late 90s to the mid-2010s or so. My SiriusXM radio is pretty much constantly drifting between the 80s all the way up to the 2010s, decades-wise.
favourite movie: My favorite movie of all time is Dead Poets Society. Otherwise, I love: Shakespeare in Love, Good Will Hunting, Love, Actually, and a variety of historical dramas mostly. As far as animated films go, I have a soft spot for Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, and Howl's Moving Castle.
favourite series: This question is mean and I don't like it. But I'll try. TV: Downton Abbey, Endeavour, Outlander, The Great, Bridgerton. Anime: Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Lupin III, Zeta Gundam. Video Games: Danganronpa, Zero Escape, Umineko, Code: Realize. Books: A Court of Thorns and Roses (and pretty much everything in the Maas-verse at this point), Bridgerton, Crazy Rich Asians. I feel like I should put something super highbrow here but uh...nope.
last song: We Will Be Memories - Call the Midwife soundtrack. I really love my soundtracks...
last series: Live action TV: All Creatures Great and Small Season 3, Marie Antoinette, Emily in Paris Season 3. Anime: Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family. Books: Crescent City (I need a book 3 release announcement ASAP)
currently reading: From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout and it's annoying me SO. MUCH. It's what I do to escape from work stress, and instead I'm getting 'slow plot and annoying main character' stress instead. After this I'm taking a break from this series and trying Kingdom of the Wicked instead by Kerri Maniscalco. If that doesn't go over well, I'll finally dip into Scarlett St. Clair and Leigh Bardugo (so I can finally watch Shadow and Bone on Netflix), or The Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz. Murder mystery fans, do not sleep on Anthony Horowitz: he is a fantastic writer!
currently watching: Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 3, Vienna Blood Season 3, Marie Antoinette, and probably Tokyo Revengers Season 2 soon. I need to catch up on the new Urusei Yatsura and the most recent Lupin III anime, too.
currently working on: de-stressing from a horrible day at work while regaining my patience for one more terrible day at work tomorrow, waiting for French seasonal clothing sales to get posted, charging my kindle so I can curl up with it, eyeing a soothing candle to light. I'm all about warm clothes, candles, my heated blanket, and books right now. And the usual: avoiding replies until I'm less tired.
tagged by: stolen from @earthssprout!
tagging: You, if you have more than three replies in your to-write pile (because that's more than me right now and I'm still avoiding them: let me help you procrastinate)
#more-than-a-princess musings#(I have no energy to really commit to replies so I'm offering this)#(I need tomorrow to be over in order to begin regaining my sanity again)

The Adventure of The German Student (Spoilers)
Washington Irving is an interesting author because he wrote many compelling stories that I would say held up in terms of literacy and wording. In simple terms, his work is easy to read for something that was written in the 1800's.
The Adventure of The German Student was one he written in 1824, 35 years after the French Revolution, which is when it took place (Irving was born in 1783). It is a short story about a man named Gottfried Wolfgang, who was a student from Gottingen, Germany. Due to the stress and ridged academic schedule, he decided to take a break and visit Paris, France. However, because of the revolution and violence, he stayed in his hotel most of the time.
Late one night, he went walking in the city when he found a beautiful and mysterious woman by the guillotine. After she told him that she had no friends or home to turn to, he offered to let her stay at his place for the night. When they got back to his place, he fell in love and confessed to her. She confessed that she also had feelings for her and they both went to sleep.
The next morning Gottfried went to look at apartments so he can start a new life with her. When he got back to the hotel, he found that he could not wake up the woman. He called for help and police arrived. They were shocked to find her there because she was a victim of the guillotine the day before. They took off her collar and her head rolled on the floor. Gottfried went crazy and was then put in an institution where he lived the rest of his life.
I liked this short story for a few reasons. One was that it was easy to read. It didn't have a lot of back story that it distracted from the main story and the vocabulary was simple to understand. I liked that it took place during a historical event without going to far into what the historical accounts were. The event was background information that still played an important roll in the story. I liked how it did discuss mental health and the effects of stress and burnout. Though the end felt like an easy rout to end the story, it was nice to see how he described Gottfried's mental state and experience and how it was a factor as to where it led him to end up.
Hopefully I can read the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I love the movies and cartoons about it and I want to really sit down and read it.

Week 4 in Prague (With a Viennese Interlude): Tour Guide Tales and Austrian Adventures
This week, my Prague narrative took an intriguing twist, blending the roles of a tourist and a tour guide, as I ventured to Vienna for a weekend jaunt and returned to play host to friends from back home. The experience was a delightful mix of rediscovering Prague through fresh eyes and indulging in the imperial charm of Vienna.
Vienna: A Weekend of Wiener Schnitzel and Waltzes Vienna greeted us with its stately architecture and cafes that make you feel underdressed. The city is a living museum, where every street corner boasts a story, and the coffee houses insist you understand the art of leisure. If you think Prague has crazy villas and museums, Vienna is that but 20x. We wandered through the MuseumsQuartier, marveled at the Schönbrunn Palace, and I developed a newfound respect for the term "Kaffeehauskultur" (coffee house culture) as we embraced the local tradition of spending hours in a café, a slice of Sachertorte in one hand and an Einspänner coffee in the other. At night, we went to Travel Shack, a hub for all tourists and foreigners with some crazy drink options- a must in my opinion. After that, we went to Prater Dome, probably the most fun club I’ve been to in all of Europe so far. Drinks were by far the cheapest we’ve seen them and let’s just say, we got there when the subway closed for the night, and left when the people were taking the morning train back to work.
Tip for Vienna: Dive into the café culture with gusto. Each coffee house is a universe unto itself, offering a unique glimpse into Vienna's soul. ALSO, must try restaurants: Ulrich and Erich (amazing brunch/lunch food- best french toast I have ever had), Neni Am Naschmarkt (Middle Eastern), and Mochi (Japanese).
The Prague Homecoming: A Personal Odyssey Returning to Prague with friends in tow transformed the city into a stage for a personal odyssey. As their guide, I was tasked with unveiling the layers of Prague, from the sprawling vistas atop Petřín Hill to the solemn beauty of the Vyšehrad Cemetery. We navigated the cobblestone alleys, each turn revealing another facet of Prague's eclectic character, from the gothic allure of the St. Vitus Cathedral to the vibrant energy of Wenceslas Square at night.
In playing host, I discovered the nuances of Prague's personality, sharing stories behind the Astronomical Clock's mechanical marvels and the legends that cloak the Charles Bridge. Our evenings were spent in lively Vinohrady, where the local pubs buzz with the energy of the city's youth, offering a taste of the contemporary Czech lifestyle amidst the historic backdrop.
Prague Hosting Tip: Use the city's tram system to give your friends a scenic tour of the less-explored neighborhoods. It's an authentic way to experience Prague beyond the tourist trails. ALSO, take your friends to the Dubliner. It probably has the best vibe out of any bar I have been to in Prague with the live music and the whole bar singing along. They’ll absolutely love it.
Cultural Exchange: Sharing Traditions and Creating Memories Playing host wasn't just about showing off Prague's sights; it was a cultural exchange. I introduced my friends to the joys of Czech cuisine, from the heartiness of goulash to the sublime simplicity of a perfectly baked trdelník. In return, we shared stories of home, reminiscing and creating new memories in this city that was becoming more familiar by the day.
Culinary Tip: In both Vienna and Prague, seek out the local markets. They're treasure troves of authentic flavors and a window into the daily lives of the city's residents.
The Joy of Reconnection: Bridging Home and Abroad Having friends visit served as a poignant reminder of the connections that endure, regardless of distance. It was a blend of my worlds—bringing pieces of home into my new life in Prague. The experience was a reminder that while I'm here to immerse myself in a new culture, my roots remain a vital part of who I am. The presence of friends from home in Prague was a bridge between my life back home and present, which felt great as I got both comfort and excitement equally.
Reflections: The Heart of My Study Abroad Experience This week of being both a visitor and a host has underscored the essence of my study abroad experience. It's about more than just academic growth; it's a journey of personal discovery, shared connections, and the joy of uncovering the soul of a place.
As I bid my friends farewell and reflect on the week, I'm struck by the richness of these experiences—how they weave together to form the tapestry of my study abroad journey. Here's to more adventures, more discoveries, and more connections that bridge the gaps between the familiar and the unknown.
Here's to the adventures that await, the stories yet to be told, and the enduring beauty of discovering the world and oneself along the way.
See ya next week,
Rachit Khandelwal

May 24th- Antwerp
We had an adventure figuring out the tram system in Antwerp. First, the tram we were trying to take was cancelled and we were waiting around for like 15 minutes without
Realizing, and had to walk to the next stop over and take a different tram instead. Later in the day we were trying to find another tram stop before we realized that there are actually underground parts of the tram in Antwerp! Who knew 😂 easy enough to figure out once we had more information, of course we always figure out the transport information as we are ready to leave a city.
We had a pretty random but busy day today! First stop today was the Red Star Line Museum. This was a really interesting museum about the history of European immigration to the United States. Antwerp was the last stop in Europe for millions of Europeans before they left for America in the late 19th/early 20th. The journey started as a 6 week sailing journey to New York, but by the 1900s they had a steam boat with a 10 day crossing to the US. it was a really well organized museum and took you through the history of Antwerp as a port city through the modern times along with immigration. Reminded me a bit of the Titanic Exhibit at COSI, the science museum in Columbus.
grabbed lunch, accidentally stopped at a really fancy restaurant and had really slow service. We were on a mission to get our moneys worth out of our city pass and they took forever. And they didn’t even serve fries with our meal 😭 Clearly should have found a to go frituur and grabbed something quicker haha!
after lunch we were going to go back to the MAS museum and go to some of the inside exhibits but decided not to to save time. We were trying to go to three churches: the first, St Pauluskerk, we arrived at 1:30 and it didn’t open until 2:00. So we went to the next church, Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal, which was very beautiful and full of paintings by Rubens. This church has the tall beautiful tower you can see all over Antwerp. as we were getting our city card scanned, we heard the person at the desk telling another couple that the church and the tower are owned by two separate companies, and the tower tours are booked through 2023!!! craziness. I have learned that the downside of climbing the most beautiful tower in the city is that then you can’t see the beautiful tower in your skyline pictures from above, so I guess for the best that we couldn’t visit the top unless we came back next year 😂then we went back to St Pauluskerk, also very lovely and had an extensive treasury filled with gold pieces for the churches altar and professionals. The treasury had a vault with a steel door and everything which was interesting! We tried to go to a third church which was only open in the mornings for visitors, so we missed out on that one.
Next we went to another unique museum, the Plantin-Moretus museum about book printing! This was the former house and book printing workshop of Christoph Plantin and his descendants, who expanded printing in Antwerp from just religious works to scientific and geography texts, and language books and dictionaries, and expanded printing options to many unique languages. Balthasar Moretus, a descendant of Christoph Plantin cultivated a relationship with Spain and they printed a fancy bible set for the King of Spain. There was an active printing press demonstration that we got to watch and the old man running the demonstration gave me the poem he printed during the demo. Not sure what I will do with a French poem written by a historical Antwerp printer but so cool! They also have an extensive library on site of books actually published at the printing press! Both the house itself, which is beautifully decorated with leather everywhere, and the contents of the museum (the books and printing press workshop) are designated UNESCO world heritage sites.
Last stop was another brewery tour at De Koninck brewery! This time, it was a self guided tour with various exhibits and movies. As promised, we got one beer at the beginning of the tour and a second along the way. we watched little videos about the history of the family who owned the brewery, the history of beer in Antwerp, and the beer making process. One room had a 7 picture frames with actors playing the previous owners of the brewery while they argued with each other via their painting about who made the best beer 😂 one owner of the brewery in wartime was forced to make beer from beets and potatoes as the conquering Germans confiscated all the grain. as he argued, it was better than no beer. Dad might like beet beer 😂
The tour was cute, but the “two beer” situation was misleading: just got two little tastes not two full beers.
We went to dinner on a rooftop bar and had some sausages, more beer, and again, no fries!!! Are we even in Belgium anymore hahaha. we were planning to take the tram back home but we walked up to the stop just as our tram was pulling away, so then it was quicker to walk 25 minutes back rather than wait for the next one.
We walked a bit through the Stadspark outside our apartment, and came back and enjoyed another evening on the patio with some cherry beers (got a fancy cherry beer but it was too much like a sour. Sticking to my previously tried cherry beers if I get more this trip)
Off to the Netherlands later this morning! :)

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2021 (also some not so good + some upcoming)
I’ve been too busy to make lists, so I’m leaving out every drama I dropped
Luoyang (watch on iQIYI VIP) adapted from the novel of the same title by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸), starring Huang Xuan, Wang Yibo, and Song Qian. The Longest Day in Chang'an vibes, but like, lighter and more colorful in every sense of the word. So many excellent female characters. Moves at a good clip for 39 episodes without stuttering. The cast is out of this world. 9/10
The Longest Day in Chang'an (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki) starring Lei Jia Yin and Yi Yang Qian Xi. Fckn masterpiece. The cinematography in this thing is a joy to behold. Visually stunning. Not a drama you can glance at occasionally and still catch the threads. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. 10/10
Sword Snow Stride (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on Viki) based on the xuanhuan novel The Snowy Path of the Heroic Blade by 烽火戏诸侯 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Hu Jun. I have a soft spot for Zhang Ruoyun so I was gonna watch this to the end even if it sucked. Luckily, it didn’t. Still, it’s sort of a run-of-the-mill adventure journey story, where the hero always wins against all odds. It does a good job filling that empty hole in your life that Joy of Life left behind. The cast is stellar, and the plot stable enough for enjoyment. 7/10
The Long Ballad (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) based on wuxia manhua by 夏达 starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Wu Lei. Dilraba Dilmurat is a fckn goddess. Not gonna lie, I watched this whole thing just for her. I’m not particularly crazy about Wu Lei as an actor, but he was amazing in this role. The plot meanders occasionally, and there are some episodes I’ve watched at 1.25 speed. Still, one of the better romances out there. 7/10
Marvelous Women (watch on Viki) starring Jiang Qinqin and Zhang Huiwen. This was glorious in every sense of the word. So many brilliant women. So many brainless men. In-depth study of duty, honor, loyalty and love. I laughed, I cried, I lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling. Beautiful story, exquisitely told. 10/10
The Theatre Stories (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring Qin Kaixuan and Zhao Xiaotang. Fun, lighthearted joy of a story. The best comedy I’ve seen all year. Love it to fckn pieces. 9/10
Honorable Mentions
The Story of MingLan (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) adapted from the novel of the same title by Guan Xin Ze Luan (关心则乱), starring Zhao Liying, Feng Shaofeng, and Zhu Yilong. Cao Cuifen is also in this, for those who fckn adore this woman as much as I do. First of all, Zhao Liying is magic on screen, regardless of the role. The romance in this doesn’t meander, even if the other story lines occasionally do. First two thirds were very enjoyable. Last third I could’ve done without. I believe I called this drama “the terrible, wonderful lives of women,” and I still hold to that. 6/10
Watched, but nothing to write home about
The Rebel Princess (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki) adapted from the novel "Emperor's Conquest" (帝王业) by Mei Yu Zhe (寐语者) starring Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Yiwei. 5/10
The Legend of Condor Heroes (2017) (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring Li Yitong and Yang Xuwen. Meng Ziyi is also in this adaptation. 4/10

Someone said that Marwa being the last wife left could be a part of the djinn's Monkey's paw punishment kind of deal and now I can't stop thinking about the implications that gives to the Marwa x djinn ship
Like he didn't intend for her to actually be interesting to him or for him to find her as cute as she is, he brought her here to be the ultimate lesson for Nandor and instead she's spending all of her time stuck in the house with him from the wishes he grants and he finds out pretty quickly that he doesn't really mind that much. The crew leave almost every night on some new crazy hair brained adventure leaving them the only two beings in the house that aren't a ghost possessing a doll and Marwa is so desparate for any kind of connection that she just gravitates towards the djinn and he can't leave the house unless his lamp leaves the house so it's not like he'll be able to avoid her forever. At first it was just the two of them sitting in the same room reading together, but then Marwa would start excitedly repeating the things she's reading almost without realizing she was speaking outloud until she says something from an old book that's out of date and the djinn on reflex corrects her and the two of them to look up at each other and make surprised eye contact for a moment before something in Marwa's eyes light up and she's launching into the million questions that have been swimming through her brain since the day she woke up hundreds of years in the future and the djinn gets surprised by the fact that her questions are actually really thought out long winded theories about scientifc discoveries and phillosophy and the implications of certain historical events on the current present world she's currently in and when she gets a distant whimsical look in her eye as she asks about historical monuments and cities, sights, and natural wonders that are just out of her reach on the other side of the house door that Nandor's wish that the djinn used his magic to keep her from, he feels guilty for the first time in his life and in a second he has a giant picture book filled with all the beautiful things Marwa wants to see conjured in his hands without anyone even uttering the words "i wish" and that's the first time his magic has ever been able to work without those magic words, but he stops thinking about those implications the second he sees the way her entire face lights up from her giant smile and she's taking the book from his hands and sitting crosslegged on the floor with it opened to a random page like an excited child beaming at the pictures she's flipping through so fast she can hardly take in everything about them and as he just sits and watches her he can't help but think about how she might be the best wish he ever granted unforseen consequences and all and suddenly it hits him how many wishes he's already granted to Nandor that changes things about her whether physically or mentally or personality wise and something about that doesn't sit right with the djinn in a way he can't explain, but he reasons he picked Marwa specifically to punish Nandor and so there's no way he's going to let anymore wishes change her, no way no siree she was here to be his unforseen Monkey's paw consequence there's no way he's letting Nandor change how much she loves science and history and there's no way he'll let Nandor change the way her eyes light up at the thought of traveling, nope she's supposed to be there to teach that man a lesson and she can't do that if he changes everything about her and that's the only reason he'll find ways to skirt around wishes like that, absolutely the only reason
#mardjinn#ignore me#marwa what we do in the shadows#the djinn x marwa#the djinn#what we do in the shadows#wwdits#maybe im going to make everyone care about this ship that wont happen just for fun#idk im having thoughts

Let Me Show You Who You Really Are.
I’ve been very burnt out from writing, but I once again saw a dialogue on Tik Tok and I came up with this! I might make this into a longer story, who knows!
Remus and Logan :)

Let Me Show You Who You Really Are
The city of Embercrest was built on the banks of a carefully crafted harbor and was truly an evergrowing urban phenomenon. Its beauty was matched by the backdrop of clear blue skies which had helped shape the city to what it was today.
The skyline was littered with various skyscrapers. Parks and gardens were flourishing in Embercrest and it had attracted a lot of attention. What historically was a city of monotony had grown into a fusion of everything and it's this that united everyone to this day.
Everyone except two clearly rival companies that sat mere meters away from one another. Both constantly promoting themselves and desperately trying to shame the other. Despite their grievances, they were the main reason behind the prosperity of the city. Azure-Tech focused on energy, creating affordable and powerful energy to power the city and advance it well beyond its years. The Knight Corporation concentrated on technology, developing new ways to heal illnesses and support the practical needs of the city.
Azure-Tech had received word of a new and supposedly impressive technology coming from The Knight Corporation that could potentially put them out business. As Remus stood outside the majestic Knight Corporation skyscraper, he sighed and cursed his father under his breath for forcing him to come and spy on the competition. He didn’t give a shit about the business, he wanted to develop his own technology. He ran a hand through his spiked green hair and took his first step through the already open glass doors.
Remus gave his name, well his fake name, and was immediately ushered around. He had to try and not look bewildered when the girl gave him a map and sent him on his way. Do they have no fucking concept of security?? His father would go bat-shit crazy if random strangers were allowed to roam his company unsupervised. He was confused though, does this mean that they had nothing to hide?
He walked around all of the corridors and marvelled at all of the gadgets being tested. Each piece of technology was more glamorous and adventurous than the previous one. At least Remus finally understood what his father was banging on about when it came to him constantly talking about the approval ratings not falling in their favour. Remus shook his head, knowing that he was getting distracted. As he walked up yet another flight of stairs, he noticed that this floor was a lot quieter, almost peaceful.
The large oak doors were closed, but Remus still rattled the doors anyway just to see if any of them would kindly open for him. In his frustration, he kicked one of them with his chunky black boots before noticing that one door at the very end of the corridor was cracked open ever so slightly. With a small smirk, he walked cockily to the door and pushed it open, hoping to find the elusive technology they were working on. Remus scowled in disappointment when it was a plain, well organised office.
He hurriedly searched around, desperately looking on the table and in the drawers to see if there was any information he could take back to his father, but the only thing that really caught his eye with the large whiteboard.
The complex equation took a hold of the entire board; letters, numbers and symbols written in different colours consumed the space, and it seemed to be incomplete. Remus studied it carefully before he took a pen stored under the board and scoffed as he finished the equation off.
‘Fucking amateurs…’ He thought to himself as he wrote. He was so consumed with what he was doing that he didn’t notice another man leaning against the doorframe until he heard a soft cough from behind him. Remus jumped and clutched his chest as the other man chuckled.
“Oh. I do hope I’m not interrupting.” Remus recognised him immediately as Logan Knight, the CEO. He backed away as Logan stepped closer. The tin pin on Logan’s freshly pressed three-piece suit glinted in the sunlight, he held his hand out for Remus to shake. As Remus hesitated before shaking it back, he noticed that Logan was far too interested in the sight behind Remus.
An awkward silence filled the room as Logan stared at the large board. Remus watched as Logan’s eyes widened in shock as the equation had been neatly answered. His eyes darted between Remus and the board before he finally spoke.
“How did you do that?” He enquired with curiosity dancing in his tone.
“What?” Remus looked around trying to look confused at Logan’s question. Logan raised an eyebrow in return.
“How did you solve that equation in the thirty seconds that I was out of the room?” Remus shrugged, desperately trying not to be proud of the fact that he had impressed the head of his rival company, his father always just dismissed him.
“I don’t know… I just did.” Remus retorted in a dismissive tone, that equation was incredibly easy after all.
“You just… did it?” Logan remarked sarcastically as Remus nodded, trying so hard to not show how proud he was to be noticed.
“What were your test results? From the mandatory aptitude tests?” Remus was caught off guard, he watched as Logan examined the equation and followed the notes made in a book on his desk. The impressed look never leaving his face until he looked at Remus again, he had forgotten that he had been asked a question.
“I didn’t… pass.” Remus muttered, even he wasn’t convinced by that lie.
“I don’t think so.” Logan replied, not missing a beat.
“What?” Remus asked yet again, the nerves starting to sweep into his voice as Logan slowly put the notebook down and took sweeping steps towards Remus.
“I think you’re lying to me, Remus Azure,” Logan spoke in a hushed voice, leaning slightly closer to Remus, “and you should come and work for me.” His tone combined with the burning fire in his eyes made Remus gulp before he scurried out of the room without a word, listening to Logan chuckle once more as he made his escape. As he reached the outside of the building, Remus took some deep breaths as he realised that Logan knew who he was immediately, before he headed back to his father with everything he was able to uncover, one thought stayed in his mind.
Logan’s offer was sounding far too tempting for Remus’ liking.

London Calling
an:Hey y'all! I'm back from hiatus and I have a new Spencer fic for y'all. This is the sixth installment of the Happily Ever After series for Spencer. As always, hope y'all enjoy!
words:1.1k
warnings:mentions of food
summary:"In London, everyone is different, and that means anyone can fit in." - Paddington Bear
masterpost|taglist|have an idea
You and Spencer had been celebrating all the milestones in your relationship, big or small.
For the pair of you, this was a big step in the relationship. You were going on your first vacation together. It was going to be a short trip, just a two-day trip to London. Which, according to Spencer, was enough time to see all the 'important sights.' He had taken the reins on planning this trip, so at this point, you were just along for the ride.
You got to the airport at noon, three hours before your flight, which you preferred. The plane took off at 3pm from Norfolk airport, which got you to the UK at 8:30 am. You had only one layover at O'Hare, which was just complete craziness. Because of his eidetic memory, Spencer had been in charge of the itinerary, the obvious—being that he was the one who planned the trip. So the first stop was the hotel to check-in, drop off your bags and freshen up before exploring the city.
Your first tourist spot was Hyde park for an hour. And then, an hour later, you watched the chaining of the guard at Buckingham Palace followed by a visit to St. James park. Afterwards, you and Spencer visited Westminster Abbey. You spent a lot of time there since Spencer had booked the hidden highlights tour. As you walked around, you were admiring the beautiful stained glass. Next, you crossed the street and saw the house of Parliament as well as Big Ben, which was not the photo opportunity you were hoping for but still amazing enough to cross off your list.
Lunch was at a swanky Indian restaurant, the Cinnamon Club. Then you were back to doing touristy things. First on the agenda was Trafalgar Square which was bustling with people, and then you moved on to the National Gallery. Which took a few hours but was completely worth it as you walked past masterpiece after masterpiece. Next was a romantic ride on the London Eye, the sun was setting, but it hadn't got cold yet. Before dinner, you visited the Piccadilly Circus, similar but not as grand as Times Square and Leicester Square. You stopped back at the hotel to change into something a little fancier before heading off to dinner. You went to Bob Bob Ricard and had a fantastic dinner with cocktails. And then you and Spencer had some cocktails at Mark's bar to end off the night.
The following day you had a bit of a sleep-in before getting a start on the day. Over a light breakfast, Spencer briefly told you the plan for the day. It was busy. Starting at 9am, together you visited the Tower of London, coffee in hand. Spencer told you all sorts of historical trivia before you moved on to the London Bridge. Of course, the bridge came with trivia of its own. You paid a quick visit to the Shard, which Spencer told you was the tallest building in London, before heading to the Borough Market for brunch.
Spencer's itinerary for your second day brought you to two museums. The first stop was the Tate Modern, London's modern art museum. It was amazing. The museum was full of contemporary artists such as; Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and, Mark Rothko. For each piece of art, Spencer was prepared with facts about the painting and the artist. After a few hours at the museum, it was time for the next stop. St. Pauls Cathedral.
You walked across Millennium bridge to get there. The architecture was beautiful, and the entry fee you had paid was completely worth it to see the inside. The second museum was the V&A museum, with a vast collection of the best art and design in the world. It was definitely not made for kids but so enjoyable for the two of you.
The last tourist attraction was Kensington Palace & Kensington Gardens; this was only a quick visit since it closed at 6pm. To mark the end of your trip, you had dinner at a well-known pub. Churchill Arms, known for its wide selection of ale and its surprisingly good Thai food. You and Spencer took your time enjoying your last meal in London before getting ready to head home.
You hailed a cab fairly quickly and piled into the backseat. Unfortunately, traffic was insane, and even though your cabbie navigated it fairly easily, you still got stuck. It took longer than you anticipated to get to the airport, but that only added to the adventure, so you weren't worried. Spencer, on the other hand, was slightly freaking out. You knew how much he hated being late, so slowly, you reached out your hand and placed it over his. When he didn't flinch away, you knew it was okay to leave it there. Over the next few minutes, his breathing slowed down, and he was back to normal.
Upon arrival at the airport, you discovered that your plane was delayed. At the news, Spencer's shoulders became less tense and his posture less rigid. Security was too bad, for the most part. The line was really long, but the process went quick. You and Spencer headed to the airport bar for a drink before the flight. You sat together at the bar, just chatting softly, which was a stark contrast to the boisterous people in the airport. A surprising number for being so late at night.
You and Spencer boarded the plane. He had the aisle, and you were in the middle. Nobody was sitting beside you, and you loved it. Your flight took off, and Spencer lifted the armrest separating you and then leaned on your shoulder. You placed a soft kiss on his head, followed by a whispered 'I love you' before settling into your seat. As his breathing evened out and he fell asleep, you started to do the same. All you could think about was how much you loved him. He put so much effort into the which was two days, primarily because of your schedule, and he made it the best trip you'd ever been on.

How Xena: Warrior Princess Allowed Me To Accept Myself
I was living in a city all alone and these two characters showed me that it was ok for two women to love each other.
In order to understand the following story, there’s something you need to know about me. I have always loved fiction. From the age of about 5 to 11, I loved books more than I loved people. I was a shy child who found it easier to emotionally engage with fictional worlds than the real one around me.
See, fictional worlds are created for your brain’s enjoyment. Their rules make sense. Events happen for a reason. The narrator tells you why characters behave the way they do, allowing you to empathize with them on a deep emotional level. Easy to understand, easy to identify with, easy to love.
But real people are complicated. The real world is complicated. And things are seldom laid out nicely in a coherent narrative format for you. Real things are much harder to love.
This emotional disengagement continued from the age of 11 onwards, although it was no longer as pronounced. My habit of retreating into fiction would fade during good times and come back in force during difficult or stressful periods. During the stressful periods of college, the rise of Netflix allowed me to become certifiably obsessed with my favorite TV shows. And naturally, I joined Tumblr in order to more easily fangirl with people who shared my interests.
Only for some peculiar reason that I didn’t care to examine, my interests were slowly gravitating towards girl-girl couples. Soon I was shipping, reblogging, and reading fanfiction almost exclusively about female couples. But I, who had always considered myself straight despite lacking interest in the boys around me, didn’t think this meant that I was gay. I probably just found female couples more emotionally satisfying. I was friends with mostly women, I was a woman myself, so it was natural that I just understood them better. Yeah, that was probably it.
Fast-forward to nine months ago. I was living in Boston and incredibly depressed about it. My job and my boss were making my life miserable and I had very few people to socialize with. I was making the rough transition from the constant socialization of college to the isolating pressure of a city where I had few connections. My days and nights were some of the loneliest I had ever experienced. I looked for something, anything, to lift the heart-crushing emotional silence.
My solution was the same one I always chose when I was dissatisfied with the real world; obsession with a new TV show. And thanks to my femslash-focused tumblr community, I knew just what my next feel-good show was going to be.
My tumblr friends had told me this: Xena: Warrior Princess is an action-fantasy show that enjoys a cult status, much like Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (which I watched and loved). The two shows were made in the same mid-to-late 90's era, with similar bad special effects and endearing campiness. But XWP is much… MUCH… more gay.
That was about all I knew about the show going in. And amazingly, that was all I needed to know to be excited about watching it. You’d think that fact would have told me something about myself, but no. The mental walls of denial were years in the building and needed more force than that to be shattered.
For anyone unfamiliar with the show’s premise, Xena: Warrior Princess is about the title character and her quest for redemption. You see, Xena did some bad things in her previous life on another show (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys). In her storied career as a warlord, she committed such petty crimes as genocide, the slaughter of innocents, that kind of thing. But now she has seen the light and wants to atone for her crimes. Except she can never undo the terrible things she did. All Xena can do now is help people on a day-to-day basis and hope that it’s enough for someone to show her mercy.
Which is already fantastic from a character standpoint. But there is a secret mirror to Xena’s journey that is not reflected in the show’s title, and that is Gabrielle and her character arc.
Oh! Gabrielle! When I met her in the very first episode, I loved her straightaway. She is a feisty, naive, talkative small-town girl who accompanies Xena on all her adventures. Her character quickly assumes paramount importance in the narrative. Gabrielle is Xena’s only friend. She comes to know her better than anyone else and love her for who she is, all the while believing Xena can reach redemption. Yet Gabrielle is not just a support system for Xena; she goes on her own heroic journey. The two character arcs intertwine and co-develop in a way I have never seen in any show before or since.
As each episode rolled by and their relationship grew in complexity, I found myself more and more engrossed. And I came to realize: this was something I wanted. The day I accepted my own desire was the day I accepted myself. What could be more strangling than denying the existence of your own feelings? Yet I had been doing this to myself for years — cutting off the possibility of being attracted to other women — without even realizing.
Before beginning the show, I thought the fandom had read in between the lines to construct a romantic relationship between the two characters, the same way as femslash shippers do in all other TV shows. Except not this time. This one is mind-blowingly different.
Not only does the narrative place utmost importance on the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, but the actresses bring such multi-dimensional love to their parts. When I saw Lucy Lawless (Xena) and Renee O’Connor (Gabrielle) interact, I could so easily believe that these two women loved each other beyond friendship. Xena and Gabrielle display every kind of love you can think of. They protect and sacrifice for each other. They tease and flirt. They cuddle and console. They have inside jokes with each other. They dance sexily. They play pranks and drive each other crazy. They sweetly kiss. They come back from the dead together. They bathe together. They raise each other’s children. They meet in alternate timelines and fall in love all over again.
I could have left my mental walls of denial in place. I could have said to myself “oh yes, I want this. But with a guy.” But no. Lawless and O’Connor’s incredibly attractive faces and bodies broke down the door of my mental closet. Precisely because they were fictional, I felt safe to admit my attraction to them. One of the key mental blocks I had always had towards accepting any attraction towards other women was the thought that I was being creepy. That since they could not possibly feel the same way about me, it was wrong to feel the way I did. But in my mind, that barrier didn’t exist with fictional characters. They couldn’t feel anything for me. Therefore, it was fine to feel whatever I want about them.
The walls cracked. The water came rushing in. Oh my god. I am attracted to other women. Like, every day of my life. Those flickers in my stomach when I talk to an attractive female coworker suddenly make a whole lot of sense now. I now saw my historical awkwardness when talking to beautiful girls, which I always dismissed as “me being weird”, for what it was. All those short-term girl crushes on older girls throughout high school. How was I so sure they were platonic? That heart-aching infatuation I had with my best friend that lasted for years? Yeah, add that to the ‘definitely gay’ list.
Since then I’ve realized that my feelings are valid regardless of what others feel for me. Just because feelings are unrequited doesn’t mean they aren’t real. That’s what Xena and Gabrielle taught me. Their fictional example was the final blow to my rapidly-crumbling resistance to the idea of homosexuality.
In our culture today, so many forms of media reinforce heteronormativity. How many commercials have you seen that assume attraction between a man and a woman? How many billboards tell women that they need to look sexy for the men in their lives? How many times has a movie ended with the guy getting the girl? It’s the combined action of a thousand small rocks shifting to make a cultural avalanche. You can’t move against it. All you can do is stand still and try to maintain your footing against the current, to maintain your identity in the face of a world where you and people like you are often swept away by the mainstream.
Xena: Warrior Princess is one of those rare stories that dares to go against the grain. It celebrates a romantic relationship between two women as the most natural thing in the world. And in doing so, it provides a mirror for me and people like me to recognize themselves in. There we are. Look at us fly.
This story isn’t over yet. I still have a lot of work to do to accept myself, but thanks to Xena and Gabrielle I’ve taken one huge step towards living the open life I want to live. I moved on from that horrible job and lonely city, but in the end I’m grateful. Grateful that circumstances pushed me to the depths of loneliness necessary to bring down the prison I had built in my own mind.
