Today in discovering I'm a flaming ignoramus: TIL Asterisk and his people (the comic characters) were not Vikings and those are not Viking helmets. Which I should have clocked earlier because he's Asterisk the Gaul. I had the image of them being Vikings so firmly in my head since I was a child that the adolescent knowledge of where tf Gaul is simply did not connect until today. And then I had an actual crisis like, wait are the French descended from Vikings?? and had to google.
If I had actually read the books or watched the cartoons I would have seen them fighting Vikings but I was a Tintin girl and Asterisk was too visually chaotic after Herge's clean lines and clear details. My sister is laughing at me because she says the cartoon said they were the last remaining Celtic village even in the Sinhalese dub.
Sedimented knowledge is an amazing thing. Whatever you believe in your earliest years just sinks to the very bed of your brain and lies there, undisturbed by intellect or new knowledge, right up until you happen to think it out loud and have an immediate record scratch moment. This is why I deeply believed until my 20s that pineapples grew underground (and I have seen pineapple groves over their fences!) and that pythons could spontaneously regenerate if cleaved in two unless you throw the two halves in opposite directions (this is such a deeply held folk belief that my former father in law actually argued about it with me).

Sometimes when I'm pondering the orbs/trying to scrape up what little characterisation there is of Galacta Knight so I can figure out how to write his character, the little quippy shotgun rider in the back of my mind chips in:
He's a 10, but he laughs like a demented seagull. "AAHAhahaha!"
He has the appetite and hubris of a seagull trying to swallow an entire hotdog.
He and Meta Knight are studying each other in a petri dish.
No fear -> Meets Bandee's Nana -> One fear
The elegance of a swan, the indomitable spirit of a territorial mother goose, the tenacity of a pigeon with a clubfoot. And the aggression of a swan.
Teeth teeth teeth goose tomia teeth 😬
Me, thinking: "Even after he chooses to better himself he's still not exactly a sweet person." Me-not-me: "That's-a spicy meatball!"
Have you ever looked a chicken in the eye? They remember when they were dinosaurs.
You can lead a Galacta Knight to healthy conflict resolution, but you can't make him drink.
He's a homing pigeon. Homing in on your location.
Instead of hitting him with the scary hands beam like Starflungwaddledee, you hit him with the scary teeth beam. And then the scary hands beam.
When all you have is a lance, everything starts looking like a target.
He's the Hero Circling the Origin. Circling it like a drain.
Uses 'fowl' language.
"Bah!" GK is Scrooge being tormented by the ghosts of his victims past, present and yet to come (and the grim reaper) to change his ways before it's too late.
GK is not really a man, because while he's bipedal he's not featherless.
Stabbing children isn't his favourite pastime. Teaching children how to stab, on the other hand...
This is less of a 'We can fix him if we hug him enough!'-fic and more of a 'We're showing him the tools to improve, but he has to pick them up himself. Which he won't do until he thinks he's worth it.'-fic.
His breakdown is like the emotional equivalent of draining pus from a festering wound.
The inherent homoeroticism of stabbing a man with a stubby pink lance...and then having to pull it out by the shaft.
He's not entirely unhinged, but his hinges are rusty and failing.
Galacta Knight *gets hit with several deadly weapons*. "'Tis but a scratch."
Kirby stopping him: "I defeated him with the power of friendship! And this sharp stick I inhaled."
He has the petty meanness of a parrot.
He explodes recreationally.
Worse: he flies into the air, displays the colours of the pansexual flag and THEN explodes. Extremely straight behaviour.
Instead of the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone he contains the holy trinity of thwarted theater kid, world-weary butch and the Faggiest Grandfather in the Galaxy.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
He could absolutely kill you and might even laugh while doing so, but it's not so much him being gleefully murderous as:
Fighting is one of the few reprieves from his unfathomable boredom and frustration.
He thinks he's irredeemable so he might as well play the villain. He's not completely heartless, but why try being kind anymore when his role is fixed anyway? Phah! Nobody spares him, so why should he show mercy?
If people summon him they're asking for it + if he just stood there and let them kill him that would be unsatisfying for both parties.
He never learned how to deal with big complicated feelings except by lashing out.
By now the pattern of 'being summoned -> fight -> win or lose' is so deeply engraved into him he'd have to climb out of the groove, so he responds to any slight by competing.
He's so used to bloodshed he doesn't know how to have a normal conversation anymore.
I'm getting a better feel for him, but guess what: if characters live rent-free in your head you can put them in a terrarium of your choosing, but they will decide how to interact with it afterwards.
For example:
At this point I can't put Galacta Knight and King Dedede in a room together unsupervised because their massive egos make them bicker and posture at each other. (They're establishing pecking order/jealously trying to impress Meta Knight, who pretends not to notice. Bird rivalry go!) It would soon have them at each other's throats. They're surprisingly similar, but that also makes them absolutely allergic to each other. If you thought Dedede and Kirby had a rivalry, well, theirs is much worse. Kirby's perfectly happy to have a competition, but he's not (usually) interested in mocking his opponent, so that defuses the situation. But Galacta Knight's a sore loser and a smug winner. If DDD and GK ever do become friends it will grow out of a begrudging respect for each other's strength and the discovery they both like: a) Shitty puns, b) Sick Burns™ and c) Teasing Meta Knight.
On the other hand, after a rough start Galacta Knight and Kirby get along like a house on fire. Kirby's just not intimidated by him, so no matter what threats GK tries, he eventually has to accept he's being befriended. He has no choice. They beat each other up, make up, bake pancakes and have a sleepover. Yay! This does not stop him from being a bit of an untitled goose bastard. It just means Kirby's exempt from the worst.
He and Meta Knight are orbiting each other like binary stars trying to figure out why the other is definitely so much weirder and more unhinged.
MK: He tried to kill me on sight. I'm going to spare him to figure out why. Huh? He's so strong and beautiful! *Notices the serrated teeth and the unhinged seagull laugh.* Never mind.
GK: I am loath to gaze upon thy dim countenance, thou stupid anomalous manlet! Thou art short and ugly! I hate thee! ...I need to know more. Kiss me I mean I'll kill thee if thou touchest me!
He and Bandee are, uh, yeah. Strained is what I would call it. GK feels disdain for people weaker than him, but admiration for the dedicated. Bandee is both of those things. So he settles for giving him a lesson in stabbing more effectively. Bandee is just ??? the entire time.
They all help him fix different aspects of himself. Kirby offered him a non-judgmental outlet for his emotions. Meta Knight made sure he was physically healthy. Dedede, reluctant as they both were about it, helped ground him in reality and showed him change is possible. Bandee helped him re-evaluate his priorities and values.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
It's less that he's suddenly developed a conscience and more that he's finally getting the chance to see them as people. Normally he gets summoned and has to fight immediately. There's no time to chat, or sit down, or think about anything but battle. With every clash with a familiar face his opponents feel more like advanced training dummies than people. It's just another iteration, they don't matter. But this time he crashed in the jungle, then had to survive on his own for six days. Once the adrenaline wore off he started feeling things like pain, hunger and loneliness. He had to find food, he had to find shelter, he had to deal with (well, avoid) noncombatants. He started using his voice again, he had time to think and see things beyond the battlefield. He didn't know what to do with himself.
So by the time this Kirby and Meta Knight show up he's in a completely different mindset. Especially when they try to reason with him. When they heal him and feed him and even invite him over. You can't really sit down with someone over a nice cup of tea without starting to see them as a person. Someone with opinions, needs and desires and insecurities. Not so different from you. And the more you see them as a person, the more you care about them and the more difficult it becomes to want to kill them.
Too bad that doesn't mean his unresolved grief and anger issues are completely gone. It just means that if he lashes out and kills them now he will regret it. Forever.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Post Hatoful Dreams GK cooking like Gordon Ramsey.
GK: *Slaps bread on MK/DMK's face* "What art thou?"
MK/DMK: "An idiot sandwich."
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
There's a war going on in his head between the touch-starved wet beast screaming "TOUCH ME! LOVE ME! HOLD ME! PLEEEASE!" and the vengeful side ready to kill and maim screaming "TRY ME. I DESPISE EVERYTHING ABOUT THEE, THOU FILTHY ITERATION OF MY NEMESIS!"
Now he finds himself in the middle, fickle and wishy-washy, craving affection, desperate to be accepted, but lashing out at any slight.

the archers, with Queen Lucy
Lucy was the youngest of four; she had never been anything but. Her brothers would be beside her, even unto the world’s ending, and her big sister was the guardian of the most sensitive parts of her heart. Susan always had a knack for knowing where Lucy had wandered off to; what wind-whisp or sunset had captured her attention. Her siblings understood her—usually—often—
They did not understand this.
Their first Christmas in Narnia, Susan had been given a bow and a horn; Lucy had received a dagger and a healing cordial. Both girls had been given two gifts, first to rescue and then to fight. They were two responsibilities, as queens and as women. The dagger was fierce and sharp, a defensive tool in the hands of an eight-year-old girl, not to be used in battle. But what about an eighteen-year-old queen?
Narnian noblewomen practiced archery recreationally. It was hardly unusual to see a lady wielding a bow at a tourney or during a hunt. Neither was it unusual to have her instructed in the essentials of warfare, for dire need and self-defense. Yet Lucy wanted not merely to understand warfare, but to practice it. She would be one of the mightiest archers in Narnia—first in attack and last in retreat, as Peter would say. To fight was not a hobby, but a calling, or perhaps a conviction. Did not a queen defend her kingdom?
Perhaps her siblings did not understand. Certainly, none of them agreed with her when she made her intentions known. Or perhaps they understood too well. After all, none of them stopped her either.
She told Peter first, one night in her sitting room. She was seventeen, a woman by Narnian reckoning. In those days, the High King would often find his way to his youngest sister’s rooms late at night. Her merry company was a balm to burdened spirits, and Peter was heavily burdened in those days. There was trouble to the west and to the north, a hundred far-flung fights that needed the king’s attention. Lucy wanted to help.
When she told him, Peter smiled a little and sighed very heavily. “Give it a year, Lu,” he told her. “A year to prepare for the real ugliness of it and to earn your command. Eighteen’s a proper age for taking the battlefield, I think-- though I don’t remember why.”
Susan and Edmund conceded less readily than Peter had done. Edmund questioned Lucy at length about her reasons for wanting to fight (Lucy would later say it felt rather like a cross-examination). When he was satisfied with her answers, Edmund nodded firmly and said, “As you say, my lady sister.”
Susan was the hardest, perhaps because she understood the least. When Susan found out—not from Lucy herself, but from Peter—she didn’t respond directly. However, she spent the next several weeks fussing and fretting over Lucy even more than usual. Once during that time, Lucy went into Susan’s rooms unnoticed and saw her crying softly. She was never sure if those tears had been for her.
A year passed. Lucy trained her hands for war. She spoke with Aslan about what her role was to be and promised she would not fail. She argued with Peter, but at last agreed not to carry her cordial into any but the direst battle.
When she was newly eighteen, Lucy rode out to battle for the first time with a column of archers behind her. It was a minor battle, all told, and little needs to be said of it. Only that war was as ugly as everyone had said, and that the Valiant Queen acquitted herself honorably.
There is nothing beautiful about war, but the Narnian soldiers said there was a certain loveliness in Queen Lucy whenever she rode to war. She was merry as she went; not for any lack of seriousness, but because Lucy had learned at Aslan’s side to marshal high courage and to spread it out to those around her. On the road to battle, people said that Lucy always laughed like she really meant it.
There is nothing beautiful about war, but there was a certain brightness about the Valiant Queen in battle. With her hair braided back, armored in mail and the blessing of Aslan, there was poetry in her movements: in the bowstring pulled back to her cheek. Neither fear nor the chaos of battle could disrupt her clear, bright eyes sighting down the arrow shaft. Her high voice shouted orders above the fray, and it also gave hope. It did not take long for Queen Lucy to be accepted as the captain of Narnia’s archers, and a light on the battlefield besides.
Years later, when Prince Rabadash brought his two hundred horse against Anvard and Peter was absent, Lucy could tell how relieved Edmund was that she was there with him. Even after many years of kingship, it is always better to prepare for such a battle with family at your side. In the command tent, Edmund squeezed her hand, and Lucy couldn’t tell for whose benefit the gesture was meant.
Lucy knew that Susan was relieved too. Just before she rode out from Cair Paravel on her charger, Susan had embraced her and whispered, “take care of each other.” Then she’d stood up, regal and tall and poised, gathered herself into the Queen-at-the-Cair that she was when her siblings were absent, and addressed the whole force. “May Aslan bless and keep you. Go in his name, and find victory,” she said in a carrying voice.
In Aslan’s name they went, and victory they found.
He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Her people called her Queen Lucy the Valiant.

Tales from the Hood: Rhodie (black elitists) or Duke Metger (Biden) - Who was the Bigger Threat to Black People?
https://followerofthewayforever.wordpress.com/2021/05/05/tales-from-the-hood-rhodie-black-elitists-or-duke-metger-biden-who-was-the-bigger-threat-to-black-people/

In Rusty Condieff's 1995 horror movie Tales from the Hood, there is a story called KKK Comeuppance which starred Corbin Bersen as senator and former KKK member Duke Metger and Roger Guenver Smith as his Public Relations consultant Rhodie (a black elitist) who are working to get Duke elected as governor. Duke faces great opposition because of his past membership with the Ku Klux Klan and AND his choice of the location of his campaign headquarters - his grandfather's old plantation. His grandfather murdered his slaves were upon finding out slavery in the south had been legally ended. There is an old legend that says that a former slave woman used witchcraft to capture their souls and place them in the bodies of dolls. The dolls would periodically come to life and their leader was the woman's husband who had been killed. A mural of the woman and her dolls was located Duke's office.
Alone, Duke was an unlikeable, arrogant, person. Yet, with the help of Rhodie, his appeal grew which made him a serious contender in the governor's race. When looking at today's political scene, one would easily say that Trump was like Duke Metger - when looking from a superficial perspective. A SUPERFICIAL PERSPECTIVE. He wasn't the most tactful. He was blunt. Some, DEFINITELY NOT ALL, of Trump's were white supremacists (some were also white "liberals" pretending to be stereotypical white conservative Trump supporters) and those who weren't white were anti-black, some of which were black. Yes, there are anti-black black people. One such character in Tales from The Hood was Rhodie. Rhodie seemed to represent a stereotypical black republican. He seems like the type of anti-black, self-hating black person who would pretend to "help" the black people improve their community by getting rid of as many Black people as possible using:
- Forget GOD and uphold multicultural, pagan ideals instead
- Abortion
- Euthanasia (gotta maintain that quality of life)
- Normalization of promiscuity
- Normalization of destructive alternative lifestyles
- The stigmatizing of traditional marriage and family
-The normalization of addiction and substance abuse, such as recreationally smoking heroin

People who promote such self-destructive behaviors as normal or even inherently black are an enemy! They are an enemy of mankind, no matter how progressive that they think such behaviors are. Indeed, progressivism, like evolution, is an oxymoron because you don't gain anything biologically nor socially. Things regress to its most basic form. Though, a progressive such as a eugenicist might would tell you, "progressive for the purpose of efficiency - less means more." More for them, more resources for them in their quest to reign supreme in the survival of the fittest, or their horrible misinterpretation of term. Yet, we don't see the promotion of such self-destructive behavior coming from Black Republicans, Conservatives, and Independents. We see the encouragement of black self-destruction coming from Black Democrats

Apostate False Preachers for Feticide and Infanticide: Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton
https://followerofthewayforever.wordpress.com/2020/03/11/apostate-false-preachers-for-feticide-and-infanticide-jesse-jackson-and-al-sharpton/
have been its main proponents and propagandists since the early 1900's when it was known as the American Birth Control League. To appeal to Black people, Sanger said:
The Use of Ministers for The Negro Project in a 1939 letter to Dr. C.J. Gamble:
"The ministers work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."
In Birth Control and the Negro, Sanger talked about the value of the influence of black ministers:
“The project would hire three or four ‘colored Ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities’ to travel throughout the South and propagandize for birth control, since ‘the most successful educational approach to the Negro is through religious appeal” (as cited in Gordon, 2007, p. 235).
Dr. Albert Lasker, Sanger (1939) stated, "If we could get the Negro Universities and the Negro medical groups behind this project it will go over really big I think, especially if there is a little money to give to those for time spent and for supplies in their clinics."(para. 3)
One of her biggest propagandists was W.E.B. DuBois (See: Negroes and Birth Control, https://libex.smith.edu/omeka/files/original/16e5b6a56c2c4aedb3274e7124f3006e.jpg)
W.E.B. DuBois (1939) stated:
“Among the more intelligent class, was a postponement of marriage, which greatly decreased the number of children. Today, among this class of Negroes few men marry before thirty, and numbers of them after forty. The marriage of women of this class has similarly been postponed.
In addition to this, the low incomes which Negroes receive make bachelorhood and spinsterhood widespread, with the naturally resultant lowering, in some cases, of sex standards. On the other hand, the mass of ignorant Negroes still breed carelessly and disastrously, so that the increase among Negroes, even more than whites, is from that part of the population least intelligent and fit, and least able to rear their children properly.” (para. 4 and para.5).
Joe Biden has more in common with Duke over the course of his career than does Trump. Here are the facts listed in my article, Joe Biden has built his career by FIGHTING AGAINST EQUITY and EQUALITY, https://followerofthewayforever.wordpress.com/2021/01/22/joe-biden-has-built-his-career-by-fighting-against-equity-and-equality/ :
"Joe used the drug epidemic to target Blacks and poor people to serve longer sentences for trafficking by promoting proganda that crack is more lethal than cocaine. Blacks and poor people could afford crack for distribution and sell because it was less expensive than cocaine which Biden gave lesser sentencing. This occurred during the time the number privatized prisons began to increase. These were for-profit prisons. This first company to take over a prison was Core Civic in 1984. Civic Core took over a Shelby County, Tennessee prison.
Vox.com's German Lopez https://www.vox.com/2015/8/26/9208983/joe-biden-black-lives-matter shares Jamelle Bouie's list at Slate.com https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2015/08/joe-biden-presidential-run-why-its-a-bad-idea.html:
"Comprehensive Control Act: This 1984 law, spearheaded by Biden and Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC), expanded drug trafficking penalties and federal "civil asset forfeiture," which allows police to seize and absorb someone's property — whether cash, cars, guns, or something else — without proving the person is guilty of a crime. Under the federal Equitable Sharing program, local and state police get up to 80 percent of the value of what they seize as funds for their departments, which critics say creates a for-profit incentive to take people's stuff.
Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986: This law, sponsored and partly written by Biden, ratcheted up penalties for drug crimes. It also created a big sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine — even though both drugs are pharmacologically similar, the law made it so someone would need to possess 100 times the amount of powder cocaine to be eligible for the same mandatory minimum sentence for crack. Since crack is more commonly used by black Americans, this sentencing disparity helped fuel the disproportionate rates of imprisonment among black communities.
Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988: This law, co-sponsored by Biden, strengthened prison sentences for drug possession, enhanced penalties for transporting drugs, and established the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which coordinates and leads federal anti-drug efforts.
Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act: This 1994 law, partly written by Biden and signed by President Bill Clinton, imposed tougher sentences (including some mandatory minimums) and increased funding for prisons, fostering the explosive growth of the US prison population from the 1990s through the 2000s — a trend that's only begun to reverse in the past few years. Since black Americans are disproportionately likely to be incarcerated, the law helped contribute to the mass incarceration of black Americans in particular. But the law also included all sorts of other measures, including the Violence Against Women Act that helped crack down on domestic violence and rape, a 10-year ban on assault weapons, funding for firearm background checks, and grant programs for local and state police.
The RAVE Act: This 2003 law built on the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 to impose civil penalties on businesses that knowingly lease, rent, use, or profit from a space where illicit drugs are being stored, manufactured, distributed, or used. The idea was to go after raves in which drugs are widely used. But the law has been widely criticized for making rave organizers so paranoid about anti-drug crackdowns that they stopped doing anything that would implicate them in drug use, including providing medical or educational services for drug users."
Interesting that Joe and Strom Thurmond partnered to write the 1984 Comprehensive Control Act during the same time period that Core Civic took over a facility in Tennessee. The increase in the number of privatized coincided with Biden's focus on creating crime bill's. To sell his 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act #1994CrimeBill, Biden's rhetoric was "Lock the S.O.B.'s Up" to further vilify the poor and other disenfranchised people to justify mass incarceration.
-'Lock the S.O.B.s Up’: Joe Biden and the Era of Mass Incarceration
He now plays down his role overhauling crime laws with segregationist senators in the ’80s and ’90s. That portrayal today is at odds with his actions and rhetoric back then.

"- Based on the January 2018 estimate that there have been 60 million abortions in the United States since 1973,20 we can deduce that well over 18 million of them were performed on black babies.
- As of July 2017, the black population in the U.S. stood somewhere around 40 million, which means that abortion has reduced the size of the black community by more than 30%—and that doesn't include the children and grandchildren that would have been born to those aborted more than a generation ago.'

Biden's overall opinion of Black people continues to be low, especially of those who would vote for him. In August 2020, Biden stated at a meeting with Latino voters:

just live a life, man! good luck.
i’m meg, 20, also the mun of seungwoo and kyunghee but lbr i’m not why ya’ll are here !! let me dive straight in to it and introduce my boi youngbae, a 23 year old drug supplier for the spades!
Tumblr media
he’s a walking disaster ...... his intentions may be good 90% of the time but he always finds a way to mess sh*t up for either himself or u somehow
king of injuring himself and things around him
he’s a drug manufacturer / supplier, and he takes pride in his work. he can brush off insults directed at him personally like it’s nothin but if u insult his product he gets pissy lmao
youngbae was brought up by a single mother and has never met his father. his mother had always been transparent about the fact that youngbae was an unplanned pregnancy (tho she phrased it more tactfully thn that) and so he’s never been too pressed about it. kids in school bullied him for it, but his mom had always loved him ennough for both parents??
so imagine how shaken he was when his mom was diagnosed with lung cancer :’ )
they’d been trying chemo and other holistic treatments, but she was losing a lot of weight fast and youngbae could tell she was withering away. so he took things into his own hands and started growing his own medical marijuana because he knew doing it legally wasn’t an option unless they moved outside of korea
this is a condensed version of his backstory but u can read more at /bio
u wouldn’t really know the stuff with his mom unless ur close to him or apart of the Spades. also his mom does Not Know what he’s up to n just assumes he found a well paying job somewhere
you know those fake!deep namjoon jokes??? that’s youngbae whenever he’s rly high, he gets all existential
he cooks the majority of his product at a secluded warehouse
youngbae isn’t the best gambler in the spades (it’s a title he affords to their leader) but he’s more skilled than the average player. he’ll try to charm your pants off with his dimples and eyesmile, but before you know it he’ll be leaving with a duffelbag full of your money
youngbae could be at a nice college studying right now but he’s decided this is a better use for his time, as he can make a lot of money fast and he wants his mom to live as comfortably as possible. he normally deals around the casino, but you can spot him lingering around in the neutral zones lookin’ fashionable and shady as fuck
i wont lie, he was super nerdy when he was younger
he might seem like a Soft boy because f how protective he is of his family but he’s capable of being an asshole just like everyone else
he’s a lover, scholar, but not much of a fighter. still, whenever he does fight someone it’s with a pair of brass knuckles.
older, conservative people wouldn’t guess he’s a genius because of his dyed hair, tattoos n fashion sense but that’s just another thing that irritates him. he hates how superficial people are but .. he’s no stranger to a pretty face
plots i want:
the cliche ‘sexual favors for drugs’ plot / trope ... ?!? ur muse doesn’t have to necessarily be addicted to anything (also any gender is fine) and they just do it recreationally
someone who he used to know years ago, during his awkward n geeky years. they reconnected by chance. someone that calls him poindexter and doesnt let him Live
someone that he tries to talk out of bad ideas but often ends up going along with anyway
an unfriendly face that he got off on the wrong foot with or just can’t stand the personality of.
the medic of another gang (or the spades) that he’s befriended and supplies painkillers to occasionally
TO BE CONTINUED .......

Spring Anime 2017: I did it for teh awkwardz
Tumblr media
We’re already a month deep into the new season, but I’ve had this draft sitting around and I might as well finish it. It’s not much anyway, because a lot of shows just kept going this time. Oh, and just for the record, I also watched episode 1 of The Reflection and that was just a boring, sketchy looking mess without any sort of narrative hook besides “superheroes, right?” Thanks, Stan Lee.
Little Witch Academia
Tumblr media
Little Witch Academia was a really cool short movie about little witches doing witch things, followed by another rehash short movie which raised concerns that the  LWA concept doesn’t have any legs besides good production values. Now we got 25 more short movies, and guess what: What worked once for half an hour of random entertainment can’t sustain 10 hours without major writing effort. And “writing effort” is clearly not where Trigger’s core competency is. LWA isn’t badly written in the ways that anime usually is: it doesn’t have terrible ideas, or schizophrenic tone, or a lack of concern for pacing. It just doesn’t really try and seems barely “written” at all. The script always has an air of “first draft” about it, in that it thinks that just winging it until the animators can make a cool action scene or a goofy face is good enough.
This is especially apparent during the first half, where Trigger are taking inspiration from episodic Western animation and just have Akko be bad at magic in various circumstances – but something like Dexter’s Lab actually has very skillful writing, even in absence of an overarching plot. In the second half, a plot rather haphazardly gets bolted on to this, but it’s not a good plot and the one good crisis it raises (an explanation of why Akko is so bad at magic that still fails to explain how she managed to get into a magic school) is so quickly resolved by everyone not actually caring about it much that I wonder if they even realized what they had there. In the end it’s just about the regular “believe in yourself, trust your friends, and ffs don’t try to harness the power of hate and suffering for your own ends” message I’ve seen a million times before, and usually done better.
And there’s more, like the cast: lots of half-assed scripts get by with just parading funny characters around, but LWA is almost always about the exceedingly one-note Akko. Apart from the ending, when Akko suddenly doesn’t matter much and it’s all about Ursula and Croix. Lotte and Sucy, ostensibly major characters, get one focus episode, then just sort of hang around later, and that goes for all the other students too. Diana gets a bit more focus, but that just points out that there isn’t a lot to her either (still more than to Akko, admittedly). There’s bizarre subplots about football. Croix gets introduced late and even then only sits around menacingly until the end. The universe is a Harry Potter knockoff without the depth (yeah, I know), and is decidedly un-whimsical for something that is supposed to run on the boundless power of imagination – just replacing mundane utilities with magic, like “crystal ball facebook”, loses its charm very quickly. And the rest is usual parade of references to things that caught the animator’s fancy that day – yes, there is a mecha episode. Of course there is. It looks good. Of course it does.
So if the writing is only a means to an end, is at least that end (animation) worth it? Well, that mostly depends on how important you consider the writing. On its own, the look of the show is premium tier, it’s always colorful, expressive, and definitely notable on a technical level for quite a few cuts. But it’s not a notable artistical achievement in its own right, and of course a TV show still can’t afford to be awesome all the time. The animation is just where all the effort went and it should make for some very nice demo reels. And even the action scenes lack engagement, because they’re set to a whimsical wannabe Danny Elfman score with no rhythm or punch.
Overall, I’d consider Little Witch Academia barely mediocre. After all my complaints about the writing, that may sound like letting it off easy. Still, the writing, while beset with endless flaws I could easily spend as much time again on, is just one aspect. All other aspects are at the very least okay, it has a few nice moments, and the visuals are consistently good – the good parts are just nothing you can spend a lot of praise on, but they do exist. Compared to the originals it’s just “more of the same”, but it’s a stark reminder that “more” in itself often makes something not “the same”. Especially 25 times more.
Kabukibu!
Tumblr media
After angrily ripping into an superficially easy-to-like, well-made anime, it’s time to be a hypocrite and give Kabukibu, a cheap, forgettable show that nobody cared about, a pass. I just have a soft spot for these little shows that try, and if nothing else, Kabukibu doesn’t feature strange self-owns like when Cheer Danshi introduced a dozen supporting characters between episodes. Kabukibu is just a show about some school kids that really like Kabuki, and that’s okay. It doesn’t excel at anything, but it doesn’t fail hard at anything either. Even the animation knows its limits, it’s obviously cheap but it never outright falls apart. The characters are a cut above the bland nothings they could be. There’s a semi-meaningful conflict about doing something for fun vs doing something as a job, and another interesting conflict of modernization vs tradition – The way that the kabuki club approaches non-traditional kabuki is actually thoughtful. And hey, even some of the jokes land.
I feel like these small stories about niche topics have one big benefit over the designated heavy hitters: They know they’re not pandering to the mainstream, and this means they can afford to be earnest (unless they’re pandering to a niche crowd, but I assume the lobby for amateur kabuki is very small). No, Kabukibu is not even close to a Rakugo Shinjuu, but earnestness is quite refreshing in anime – even if it’s just another fucking school club again.
The King's Avatar
Tumblr media
There’s a very simple elevator pitch for The King’s Avatar: “Sword Art Online, but Chinese”, and you’ll hear that pretty much every time TKA is mentioned. Like just now. But from what I can tell, it’s only surface level. Yes, TKA is about a cool dude who pwns fools in an online game, but that’s pretty much where it ends. What’s actually very true about the comparison, however, is that TKA is Chinese. Very Chinese. Much more Chinese than all the Haoliners anime made for the Japanese market. It’s still basically a very slow, idealized sports show about a bunch of quirky people that climb the ranks in an MMO that also is a hugely popular e-sport, led by a guy who is suspiciously good at it, but playing a game for a decade will do that I suppose.
I don’t know much about MMOs, much less Chinese ones, but the details of the game don’t seem to make a whole lot of sense to me (especially the focus on APM in a game like this seems questionable), but hey, I’ll accept it. It’s not like it’s very important either, since thankfully there isn’t a lot of backseat game design happening here. It’s just people having fights with the occasional random powerup, and that works well enough. The Chinese like their sudden comedic tone shifts even more than the Japanese do, so there’s a bunch of that too. But I like the characters and their schemes, and I like how the fights look – at least up to the standards of a mid-tier Japanese production. It’s pretty cool. To be honest, the culture clash my main draw here: TKA isn’t exactly great, but it feels odd in a way that reminds me of the time when I didn’t know every anime trope and a huge amount of Japanese cultural details. That makes it feel more like “anime” than actual anime does nowadays.
Uchouten Kazoku S2
Tumblr media
Uchouten Kazoku didn’t have to do much to be a winner, and sure enough, a winner it was. If you liked the first season, you’ll like this too, since it’s more of the same. And that’s in fact the one major thing I would hold against it, and which makes me like season 2 less than the first one: The surprise factor is gone, but everything else is just... the same. Down to the plotline, which eventually turns out to be almost a replay of season 1. Only this time with an even less conclusive ending because there will be a season 3 eventually – but the book that will be the source material for that one hasn’t even been written, so it’ll be a long wait.
But stagnating at a level as high as Uchouten Kazoku is operating on is still far from bad. And the few things they did add are top notch: The Nidaime finally gives Benten a counterpart that is able to stand up to her, with glorious results. Gyokuran, Yoichirou’s fiancee, makes for a nice romantic foil for his previously a little bland character. And Tenmaya is just a bastard you love to hate. Add to this some delightfully weirdo happenings like Benten taking a trip to hell to recreationally wrestle ogres, and you’re never lacking for entertainment with this show. It didn’t blow me away the same way the first season did, but it’s still an extremely solid show. Just come up with a few more new things next time, okay.
Tsuki ga Kirei
Tumblr media
And finally, we have the hardest sell for a show in quite a while. What is Tsuki ga Kirei about? Well, it’s an understated romance between normal (i.e., awkward) teens. No magical realism gimmicks (like One Week Friends), no intense drama (like every shoujo romance ever), no odd couple dynamics (like Ore Monogatari), nothing. And it’s shamefully heterosexual on top of everything, who is supposed to watch this!? Well, there’s only one actual reason to watch it, and that reason is that it’s pretty damn good. There isn’t much to it, but it just does everything right: The characters are fully formed humans with relatable, relatively minor weaknesses that anyone could have. There are no designated villains; even the romantic rivals just turn out to be good people whose danger comes mostly from being a bit more outgoing that our introverted protagonists. The meddling adults really do have everyone’s best interests at heart, they just have a more cynical outlook on life. The characters develop in a relatable way, without leaving their original setup behind. It’s really good stuff that I would hesitate to call fully “realistic” (it’s a bit too sappy and positive for that), but has a verisimilitude that is almost unmatched in anime of this genre. And that is more important here than brutal realism.
It looks good too; the production falters a bit in the middle, and it has a curious reliance on stiff CG models for crowd scenes, but it’s nothing unusual and nothing that would amount to a major trouble spot since the character design, animation detail, background and and color work is consistently very good. I’m not going to lie, I love Tsuki ga Kirei and it’s the best show of the season, and that is no mean feat considering that said season had a very solid sequel to Uchouten Kazoku in it. Just a nice, small scale story about a bunch of lovable dorks that fully pays off and leaves no questions open.

NAME OF YOUR MUSE: Alana Stark (verse dependent)
ONE PICTURE YOU LIKE:
Tumblr media
TWO HEADCANONS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR MUSE YOU NEVER TOLD ANYONE
i.        Alana has a heart that cares deeply so when she gets hurt or loses someone close to her, it nearly destroys her. When she loses her mother violent and is riddled with guilt, she turns off her emotions or her “humanity”. There isn’t much that she won’t do in that state of mind. It’s a psychotic break that last for several years until she makes it to King’s Landing. There she holds the persona that she’s had the trip down there: cocky, aloof, unafraid, and ruthless. However, when the most unexpected person, Gregor Clegane - the Mountain That Rides, creeps his way into her heart, she clings to him. Without being asked, she starts to take care of him: stitching up wounds after a fight, making sure he takes his medicine, repairing things for the home they share, and massaging his temples. Even though she has pushed all her emotions into a little box, locked it, and threw away the key, she cares for Gregor and slowly the box starts to break down. She can’t get rid of her caring heart so matter what happens.
ii.     Despite her love for her parents and those she’s adopted into her family, she’s an incredibly lonely person. It’s hard for her to connect with her peers after being bullied for so many years. The children that she played with the most were Free Folk children, they didn’t care who her father was or that she wasn’t the perfect princess. However, she only got to see them every so often once the war ended. It also becomes hard for her to find love as well. That’s all she really wants: to be loved. Her parents love her but it’s her parents. It’s hard to feel it sometimes so she falls back into her journals because sometimes they are the only ones who listen. Alana doesn’t believe someone loves her at first, because she doesn’t really believe that it’s possible. However, if they persist and keep trying to show her that she’s worth it and that they do love her, she will love them twice as hard in return.
THREE THINGS THAT YOUR MUSE LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME:
i. Ride horses recreationally and competitively
ii. Read books/write in a journal
iii. Training in the yard with her uncles
SEVEN PEOPLE THAT YOUR MUSE LOVES/LIKES/TOLERATES:
i. Her family (parents, uncles, aunts and siblings if applicable)
ii. Davos Seaworth
iii. Gravven Myre/Rhaego Targaryen
iv. Shennen Clegane
v. Tethar the Whore
vi. Gregor Clegane
vii. Her horse - Mystic
TWO THINGS YOUR MUSE REGRETS:
i.      Alana regrets keeping secrets from her parents about the bullying she endured during her childhood. She kept it out of fear that her parents would be disappointed that she wasn’t strong enough to handle it herself. If she would have let her parents know, then maybe the children’s actions could have been corrected and she would have had friends her age growing up. She loves her family and those around her, but she was so lonely because she had no one her age to play with.
ii.    After her mother’s death and Alana’s psychotic break, she regrets leaving home and the actions that followed it. Her hands are covered in so much blood that there is no way she could return home without facing the death sentence for flaying. Now she is stuck in such a persona that she can’t shake without getting herself killed when all she wants to do is go home to her family. Instead, she stays in King’s Landing with a hardened heart but finding people to care about anyway.
TWO PHOBIAS/FEARS YOUR MUSE HAS:
i.  Disappointing her elders
ii. Being alone in the world

The modern version of the Stirling engine has some very, very attractive characteristics, and we’re trying to optimize it for some of those applications. – Dean Kamen

When they chanted Diesel, it sure as hell felt real for ME! You make decisions in life, sometimes never getting proof that it was the right decision. The crowd in Boston on Sunday night assured me that I MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. – Kevin Nash • Had we had all the money in the world to spend and we were doing another studio movie, we probably would have jumped quickly into the Necromonger universe and done an Orpheus Descending movie there. We didn’t have that kind of resource. So, we said, this time, “If not that, this time, then what is it? What does this new movie look like?” Quickly, just in talking about it very simply with Vin [Diesel] in his kitchen, we decided on a survival, left-for-dead story, where Riddick could, as a character, reclaim the animal side. – David Twohy • Have you eaten?’ I asked Diesel. When?’ Recently.’ No. – Janet Evanovich • He doesn’t look very smart,” Diesel said. “He’s not even giving me the finger.” “Can monkey’s do that?” Hal asked. Carl gave him the finger. “Cool!” Hal said. – Janet Evanovich • High gas prices are eating away at consumers disposal income and could lead to a further economic downturn, especially for those whose livelihood depend on gasoline and diesel fuel. – Major Owens • I am kind of like a diesel. • By increasing the use of renewable fuels such as ethanol and bio-diesel, and providing the Department of Energy with a budget to create more energy efficiency options, agriculture can be the backbone of our energy supply as well. – John Salazar • Clearly, there are many places where diesel is king or gas-turbine is king, or IC engines will win, but there are many places in the world where, as we’ve seen, they just won’t do the job. The modern version of the Stirling engine has some very, very attractive characteristics, and we’re trying to optimize it for some of those applications. – Dean Kamen

It is calculated that if these 73 million animals were to be replaced, we would need 7.3 million tractors at the cost of 2.5 lac each which would amount to an investment of 180,000 crores. In addition 2 crore, 37 lakh and 50 thousand tonnes of diesel which would mean another 57,000 crore rupees. This is how much we owe these animals, and this is what we stand to lose by killing them. – Maneka Gandhi • Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody. – Pat Buchanan • Diesel fuel is too important to our farmers at harvest time and to the truckers delivering commerce across Nebraska to allow a bureaucratic hurdle to slow the delivery of fuel. – Dave Heineman • Diesel is back,” Ranger said. Yes. How did you know?” I woke up with a migraine this morning.” Ranger said. – Janet Evanovich • Diesel pioneered the idea of luxury denim, and we still drive this market. But it encompasses more: the consumers love the brand, the lifestyle, the mentality of Diesel. – Renzo Rosso • Don’t know if Boston was real or lucid dream.
