sorry this is gonna be a long one
Im gonna be honest here I highly doubt most of the people on this website are truly progressive in any way other than performative. yall get so surprised when a former tumblr user turns out to be highly problematic on twitter or facebook once they leave but like...its not that surprising. the culture on tumblr is one that aggressively self-polices. there arent active mods or functional algorithms that remove dangerous statements or radicalized users. when people say controversial shit, the biggest backlash they get is from other users, and those users can more or less get away with anything because the moderating system here is garbage. so, if someone steps out of line so to say, they get harassed by a shit ton of random people and the blocking system on here is so ineffective that anything twitter does to moderate a problem post is child’s play compared to the consequences of a bad tumblr take. the real issue is that twitter has a functional block system and rules that are enforced so that twitter users dont feel the need to gang up on or harass people, or in some cases they arent able to do so as effectively. that means people can say shit on twitter that just doesnt break their rules and more or less get away with it. they just block people or private their account for a while and deal with fairly minimal backlash compared to what would happen on tumblr. if someone on tumblr steps out of line, they can get DESTROYED. the block button on here is effectively a placebo. plenty of users arent afraid to speak their minds off anon. it doesnt even take a truly disgusting post to get harassed on tumblr, ive seen people get bullied for misunderstandings or for having the wrong opinion on something that truly doesnt matter outside of the internet or even just outside of tumblr dot com. this results in a culture of people who are aggressively PC for dishonest reasons. this is the reason users get messages asking for their diagnoses or their race or their gender identity or their sexuality because everyone is on edge all the time and sees dangerous people everywhere. this is also the reason terfs and aphobes thrive on here, because if you truly dont care about what other people are saying about you then you can get away with murder here because thats the only true policing we got, peer reviews.
only our peers are always looking for a fight. and its not a good thing. the average tumblr user is not qualified to act as judge, jury, or executioner. i know, shocking. still, that’s the only justice system in place here. its like if a high school was run by the teenagers. the rules are based on what the popular kids think is cool or uncool that week, not based on any school rules. the punishment is constant harassment by your peers, not official action. it isnt healthy or sustainable. it also leads to dishonesty. people who are scared of controversy dont speak up even when it would be the right thing to do. people who arent scared of anyone will say whatever they want to with no consequences. its not a moral based system, its a courage based system. it doesnt work, but it is what separates tumblr from other sites
