im just gonna be so genuine and say i love you but i dont understand what racist remarks you're talking about and it's really frustrating for me to hear people talk about this like its so serious when i havent seen anything at all thats bad. im white so i think i may have genuinely missed things but could you please just give me some examples? i really am trying to understand where you guys are coming from its just getting hard because everyone is just getting mad at each other whenever they talk about it. i know people are mad bc of something dan said about not being able to come on tour to third world countries and possibly something he said in like 2011 when he was in his crazy fake tan phase? i just really am not seeing anything here that i think would get people so worked up and i would love to understand better

Hey anon, I understand where you coming from. And I really appreciate you trying to understand better.

To be really honest, why things have blown up now is because of the upcoming tour. It’s not really about why they couldn’t go to the other continents when they’re planning to do 32 shows in US, even though that’s also fishy af cause they could’ve easily dipped into Mexico, and the route they using feels like they’re avoiding latam specifically. The way that they handled this with poc fans is the problem, because while they’re being excited from the tour or whatever, they have not once tried to explain why they couldn’t go to poc fans (or the majority of us that is. Some of us might live somewhere else.)

The way they keep retweeting and being hyped about the tour, while basically intentionally avoiding talking to us is just.. it hurts. Most of us complain about this, and even more expressing how they just need dnp to give them an explanation. But never once did they do it. Instead, they even launch more trailer lol. And I know they saw it, there’s a lot of us and they like snooping on social media anyway. It makes us feel like we’re not part of the tour, that it wasn’t meant for us. And it was actually the first time I questioned if I was really a part of this community at all.

Turning back to phandom with that state of mind, it can feel like everyone is abandoning you. Because just like dnp, everyone is only talking about the tour, and not about how this exclusion needs to be addressed. It’s understandable why people would feel angry when they just keep being ignored like their voices didn’t matter. But I know now, just because people didn’t interact with me, doesn’t mean they didn’t want to be there for me. We just might come from a different place. (Btw, if you’re western and you have poc friends who’s affected by this, please reach out to them. The reason why I’m still here rn is because of all my friends, western friends included, saying they’ll be there for me throughout this racism thing. They might be angry and hurt, and even assume the worst of you. And I won’t ask more than you can do. But saying you understand (or at least empathize the situation they’re in) and that you will support them no matter what, will help them a lot.)

Dan clearly carry a micro aggression around latam, and the fact that this still occur in wad really says a lot about how they’ve not grown from that. When dan said brazil and mexico were 3rd world country on was, that makes us feel like he’s looking down on us. And the fact that they have avoided latam specifically without giving any reason why they couldn’t go, well, there’s only so many things you can assume is happening under the surface. This makes us feel like they’re looking down on us, and that they’ve never seen their poc fans as equals.

The reason why the old stuff was brought up is because this isn’t the first time this has happened. Dan has made a lot of racist remarks, and while it’s understandable to slip up from time to time, and even more understandable why he might be afraid to actually apologize and own things up, it doesn’t excuse the patterns that are being repeated here. When he doesn’t take accountability to his past mistakes and keep repeating the patterns of racism and exclusion, that indicates he’s going to keep oppressing us forever without ever acknowledging it. And THAT is not okay.

We don’t want to cancel them, never once do we want that. We only want dnp to hear us and actually talk to us about this. They are not beyond redemption, but it’s going to be hard for them to open up considering the past fifteen years of them not doing that. So the only thing we can do at this point is to be more opened up about their racist remarks. We’re bringing up past mistakes now, because there’re still a lot of people who have been affected by this, and them not bringing it up is not going to make all that hurt go away. So I suggest, we should bring it up, not to cancel them or demonize them! But to acknowledge it exists so that we can heal from it. We can learn to love dnp despite being flawed, and normalize how to take accountability to make this place safer for poc. These voices can’t be avoided because that’s also a form of exclusion in this community. I want everyone to feel welcomed here, so I’ll listen to their voices when they need it. That way, there will be a place for poc to belong in this space. We can learn to include each other in, or at least I hope so :3

So, I still have a few more things to say. And then I think I might be done with this topic. I write this for the record.

One of the strangest things about @phandombigotryarchive /@wjsnsfriend is how she turned on so many people who once supported her fics. She has since changed usernames on ao3 and made her Pharoga fics anonymous – but they’re still there. And you can see all the people who left kudos and nice comments who were eventually harassed and driven out by PBA/@wjsnsfriend and @trans-flint.

The only interaction I had with PBA/@wjsnsfriend before February 2021 was when I left a nice comment on her fic Tristeza não tem fim. I was excited to see that title and to read in the notes that she had been inspired by the 1959 film Orfeu Negro. The interaction we had in her comments is probably why she mistakenly thinks I am Brazilian. Because she assumes things without knowing anything.

I’ve written two posts about this complicated film here and here. It is both one of my favorite films and also a deeply problematic piece of art. So problematic that Barack Obama wrote about his negative experience watching it in his book Dreams of My Father. In other words, it needs to be viewed with nuance. Nuance PBA did not lend Madame Faust’s work.

While Orfeu Negro is a Portuguese-language film, made in Brazil with an all Black cast, it was directed by a white French man, Marcel Camus. He was married to the lead actress, the Black American Marpessa Dawn, at the time of filming.

Among many issues with the film is a really awful and racist scene involving watermelon. I mention this scene in this post. [Photo after the cut]

I don’t criticize the quality of PBA’s fic or her use of Orfeu Negro as inspiration. I think the film is important enough to transcend the racism inherent in most films made at that time. But I find it extremely hypocritical that she would excoriate another author for addressing themes of slavery and racism in fanfiction while uncritically enjoying a film made by a white French man as problematic as this one. 

What was it about Madame Faust that really bothered PBA? And let’s not forget that PBA didn’t work alone. @trans-flint/ @cenfantomeenhabitnoir /elegantidler had a lot to do with PBA’s actions in February and March of 2021. They are both responsible for trying to destroy another author and to cause harm to as many people as possible within the Phantom of the Opera fandom. I wonder how long it took for them to plan it all out? From the tags in this post it looks like @trans-flint had some idea that he was going to start hurting people at least as of January 1 2021.

Why Madame Faust? Both PBA and @trans-flint wrote Pharoga fics and MF a was a popular Pharoga writer. And she is a nice person who they rightly assumed wouldn’t fight back. Within that MF call out post there was a long tirade about how all Pharoga writers are racist and Orientalist, again making assumptions about who Pharoga writers really are, completely ignoring non-white people in the PotO fandom.

I am not a Pharoga writer. PBA never came after any of my fics. I don’t think she even reads fic – not even MF’s fic beyond searching for some quotes to take out of context. I have often wondered why I was targeted by PBA - she wrote absolutely sickening lies about me – why was I even in her sights? Here’s what I think: PBA and @trans-flint went after people who shared common interest with them. I believe @trans-flint encouraged PBA to come after me because just a week before the MF post on February 25, I made a proposal for a PotO Paris Commune Week to be held in May. Clearly, he found this intolerable.

@trans-flint makes a lot of assumptions about the phandom and about how stupid he thinks we all are. The tags are interesting. While I am politically sympathetic to the Paris Commune, the execution of their 62 hostages was the worst thing they did and it damaged their reputation in history for decades. Leroux plays heavily upon this bad reputation too. Maybe the Commune was good – but executing hostages is always vile. Commune Week went really well, by the way. Even if PBA tried to spam the tag with some k-pop reblogs, because that’s not racist or fetishizing at all.

PBA reblogged this post from @trans-flint on March 5 2021 and she again insists that I am Brazilian and again tells lies about me.

I have never tried to excuse the trans-Atlantic slave trade – and neither did Madame Faust. It’s all lies. It’s disgusting that she would say this. It makes a mockery of actual racism. There is racism in the PotO fandom, absolutely. But MF’s fic was not it.

I never complained about anything PBA did until August 2021. It took me a while to get some perspective on what happened. But I think I get it now. @trans-flint and PBA laid out that MF post like a trap. They created something so outrageous that it would horrify everyone in the fandom, even people just watching it unfold. They were probably always going to make a list – that post was just a way to collect names. If PBA actually cared about racism in PotO, she would be out here calling out those who have said awful things about Lucy St. Louis. But she’s not. Her work is done.

But they’ve already lost. Their list has been proven meaningless. It protects no one. Even PBA seems to have forgotten about it. And I think the phandom should too. Let @trans-flint drive himself crazy trying to update it without using excel.

A pale teen with white hair and green eyes stands just outside of the UA gates. Only a few inches from where the sidewalk turns into the bricks of the school's entrance way. This isn’t a rare sight, seeing as almost all new students come to gawk at the large building where pro heroes are made. Where futures are built. Where dreams become reality.

But the boy standing there now isn’t silent from admiration. He doesn't appear to be concerned with the building at all, as if it were just like every other one on the street. No, this particular student seems to be thinking about leaving. As if weighing the option in his mind of whether or not continuing would be worth the effort. After all the work it took to even get to this point and with hundreds of other students willing to do anything to take his spot, you would think the choice to be easy. That the only logical thing to do would be to step forward and embrace the future that awaits inside the walls of UA.

But instead the thin, pale teen takes a step back. And then another. But it seems that fate has other plans as another boy, who seems to be around his age, crashes into his back and sends him forward the few steps he needed to cross into the official boundary of the school. He turns around, not angry at the push or sudden intrusion of his… escape. Merely curious. There are all sorts of people, you never know who you will run into. Or, well, who will run into you.

“I-I-I’m sorry!” the boy with green hair stutters apologetically, arms flailing about with nervous energy. “I wasn’t looking where I was going and I should have been and I’m-”

The boy with hair as white as the clouds above them catches the others hand gently and shakes it, as if that was what the other was intending all along. “I’m Danny, nice to meet you.”

“Oh! Uh- nice to meet you too! My name is Midoriya Izuku!” he seems shocked at the american name of the other, but doesn't comment on it and Danny doesn't explain. That would be a story for another day.

“Yes, you are quite a legend with your entrance exam. I’m excited to be learning with you.” Danny smiled “What class are you in?”

“Oh! Uh, t-thank you!” the shorter of the two blushed from the praise, not seeming to know how to take the compliment and quickly moving on to the next part of the conversation “I’m in class 1-A. What...what about you?”

Danny smiled kindly and began walking towards the steps of the school building with a confidence and purpose he didn’t have mere moments ago. “Me too, let’s go together.”

Once the two of them reached the large door of the 1-A classroom, Danny let himself fade into the background of all the chatter. It appears that Izuku is trying to warn him about some of the other students in class, but he pays that no mind, simply staying beside him and nodding along. Not that he doesn't trust the other, more along the lines that he knows he can handle whoever they are if push comes to shove. So for now he simply nods as if the information is helpful and interesting. That is, until a figure with awkward footsteps makes his way over to them and begins to introduce himself. Iida, it seems, with Izuku responding in kind. When the blue haired teen turns his gaze to him, Danny realizes he is the one in the spotlight now.

“I’m Danny.” he smiled politely to the other.

The taller seemed thoughtful for a moment, as if trying to remember something. But he eventually gives up that train of thought and turns his attention to the girl now standing next to Izuku. The nice and warm atmosphere doesn't last much longer however, as a man in a yellow sleeping bag in the middle of the hall speaks up to gather their attention before standing upright and removing himself from the confines of the sleeping bag. The older man pulls a gym uniform from inside the bag and announces to the class to get dressed and to meet in the playing field.

It seems that this will be an interesting first day after all.

Now changed and ready to go, the entirety of class 1-A now stands in the center of the UA’s physical education field as Aizawa, their homeroom teacher, begins to explain what will be happening today. A Quirk Apprehension Test. Something that seems to not have been allowed in middle schools across the country, making students use their own strength without the help of a quirk in order to even out the playing field.

But of course, because this is the hero course at the hero school, there’s a catch. Whoever scores the lowest in all eight sections is to be expelled… not that Danny is really worried about that, per say. Where he lacks in physical strength he makes up with the power flowing in his veins. Just applying them to these tests should be enough to at least score somewhere towards the middle.

However…

Looking at all the faces of the students around him Danny can’t help but to feel… bad. One of them would be going home tonight, expelled from a course many can only dream about and chances are Danny wouldn’t ever get the chance to properly meet them. It isn’t fair to be crushed while so young. But there’s nothing Danny can do aside from losing these tests on purpose, but that just isn’t an option right now. So instead he offers a steady hand on the shoulder of Izuku. The green haired teen seems more worried than determined, but when he looks back over his shoulder with a smile, Danny couldn’t help but to return it and put his confidence into the boy. Everything would work out fine.

Everything is, decidedly, not fine. While Danny himself was able to do well in the dash and long jump while lacking on the strength grip and side steps, it seems his new… friend? Izuku has been struggling in all categories. He had seen the others exam, knew that there was power hidden within him. But for whatever reason the other didn’t seem to be able to use it.

As the class made their way back out to the P.E fields for the official ball toss, Danny stepped close to his curly haired classmate. “Bad day?”

The other teen sighed “It’s… complicated.”

Danny nodded “I understand that. It’s hard enough being a teenager with power at your fingertips, and this is certainly a stressful first day.”

“Yeah…”

“I saw the video of your entrance exam. And no matter what happens today, you are already a true hero. If nothing else, you can believe that.”

The shorter one looked up at him with wide, dark green eyes “Really…?”

“Of course!” Danny grinned “A real hero can’t be solely defined by tests like this. It’s the actions that matter. This place,” he said gesturing to all of UA with his arms “Is just a stepping stone to getting that “pro” title. In my eyes, you’ve already earned the title of hero when you went after that machine.”

Aizawa spoke up before Izuku could say anything in return, calling Danny to the field for his turn at the ball throw. Without hesitation the white haired teen took the ball and made his way to the painted circle. He had been thinking on what to do for this ever since the demonstration with Katsuki, but standing there now, he felt that the answer wasn't as complicated as he thought it was before.

“You might want to cover your ears!” he called back with a wink, only a few students took his advice. Their loss...

Danny throws the ball upwards into the air and takes a deep breath. Before it even has the chance to begin its descent back down, the halfa releases his ghostly wail, the shock waves sending the ball flying outwards while, thankfully, not destroying it. Leave it to UA to make sturdy products for their students.

Eventually the ball lands and Aizawa holds up his phone, broadcasting the number of 650.4 meters. Not bad, considering it is the first time he has even tried to use his power like this. The other students' faces seem to be overly shocked as he steps back to his place next to his green haired friend, but this is fine. He’s used to attention one way or another by this point, so the eyes that follow him don’t mean much.

“That was awesome!” the boy next to him cheered. “What kind of quirk do you have?! How have I not asked you before?! You have such a range of skills! I saw you flying earlier! How-”

Danny just smirks, eyes flashing a brighter green for just a moment. “Hmmm… who knows?” he says playfully, bumping his shoulder into the other teens in a friendly manner.

That night all the students begin to head home with light hearts and tired bodies after finding out the expulsion rule was all a ruse to bring out the best in everyone. Danny can’t help but to be glad, seeing as that means his new companion is safe to continue learning for another day. He can see it in the others eyes, the dazzlement and determination of just being within the walls of UA. Seeing that light go out… isn’t something Danny wants to see if he can help it.

Some students head off to the dorms, others to their homes. Danny himself goes to an apartment building not far from the school and enters using his key. It’s quiet, but not silent when he enters. The hum of the TV and the footsteps in the kitchen bring a homey feel rather than the quiet emptiness of what this place once was.

Sam appears in the doorway as Danny takes off his jacket and tie. Wearing a uniform is still new to him, and not a change he can really say he likes, but he’ll get used to it. It’s just clothes after all. The goth smiles teasingly “So how was your first day of school? Learn anything interesting?”

“Har har.” Danny replied with a roll of his eyes. “Everything went fine, mom.” he takes off his shoes before transforming back into Fenton, into his human half. He is getting used to being his ghostly self mostly full-time now. At first even a whole day was too much to handle, making him feel nauseous and off balance. But after some training it became easier and easier to be changed for longer and longer. Still, it is nice to be reunited with his back hair and blue eyes. Sam keeps saying he’s just as pale in both forms, but Danny likes to think he has more life to him this way.

“Well, mister. It’s about time to get that wound of yours cleaned.”

Before he can say anything, Sam is already making her way down the hall. With a sigh, Danny makes his way into the bathroom instead of his to his bedroom. He’d love to change, maybe get a shower, but his friends are pretty insistent on this whole “cleaning your wound everyday” business. Crazy.

Tucker comes in a moment later in his sleepwear and pulls out the first aid kit. His sleeping schedule has been all over the place since the trio arrived here. Creating fake ID’s and documentation as well as keeping up to date online to make sure that no one had found them or figured them out became a full time job for the other, only getting sleep what seemed to be every once in a while. 

“I’m sorry, Tuck. I didn’t know you were asleep. I would have done it myself.”

Tucker laughs as he sits next to his friend on the side of the tub, motioning for Danny to take off his shirt. He complies. “Oh, please. We both know you wouldn’t do anything about it if left on your own.”

It was Danny’s turn to laugh as Tucker began to remove the gauze. “Well, you got me there.”

Underneath all the bandaging and gauze, the wound is still as bad as when he first got it all those months ago. A ghost had come with a cursed weapon, planning to take over Amity as all new ghosts usually do. While Team Phantom had been able to apprehend the ghost and gave them to Walker to deal with, it wasn’t without injury. Danny had been stabbed with the cursed spear in the shoulder right before the weapon could be destroyed.

The wound itself wasn’t too bad, in a sense. The pain is now dull as long as he is careful, and it had stopped bleeding after that first day. But the marks that almost look like a lichtenberg scar, criss crossing over the skin of his shoulder in a jagged maze-like pattern, started to spread. After some research and talking with Pandora, it was said that there would be a ghost here in Japan that could help. Hence the whole hiding in plain sight shtick. UA seemed to have some of the most powerful heroes and gained a lot of attention on both sides, so it was only a matter of time before he was enrolled with his “Death Mirage quirk”.

“Any luck in finding them? The ghost that can help?” Tucker asked as he rubbed disinfectant on his shoulder to keep germs and bacteria at bay.

“No, my ghost sense never went off. But it is a big building and I was outside most of today.”

Tucker nodded as he began to wrap new, clean gauze over his shoulder. Really, Danny was lucky the gym uniform covered it all. But he would most likely have to look into heavy duty make-up soon if the scars continue to spread.

Especially considering that while he’s a ghost it glows.

And yet, as Tucker packs his things away Danny can’t help but to look at the sunset out of the small bathroom window. All the colors are so bright and vibrant, illuminating the sky before night settles in. It really is no different from the ones he’s seen back home, but it brings a smile to his face either way. He can’t help but to think that he will enjoy his time here, even in these circumstances. He can picture himself now, flying above the tall buildings, looking at the stars. Maybe he could even bring his new UA friends along, show them a view from the clouds. He may not be here long, so it’s best to make the most of his time spent here, right?

There are good things coming on the horizon. He can feel it.

As excited as I am for the book, I can’t help but be scared at the prospect. There’s such a huge stigma surrounding youtuber books and even youtubers doing something BESIDES YouTube, so I guess I’m kinda afraid of this being a huge flop or people brushing it off as just another ‘yt book’

(also this got really long im sorry apparently i have feelings i have been writing this for 20 mins lmao tldr i think the stigma is uncalled for, people hate dan too much, the book is probs gonna be good, and i dont the publishing numbers really matter cause thats not what hes writing for)

to me at least, i think the stigma around yt-er books as a whole is uncalled for. sure some of them are unoriginal or written by ghostwriters or just bad but i firmly don’t believe dan’s will be. its dan ffs, he is so funny and thoughtful and good with words i cannot wait to see what he says. also i have read some ‘yt books’ that are genuinely wonderful memoires. binge by tyler oakley and buffering by hannah hart come to mind. i also think its possible dan slowed down his yt career so its not considered a ‘yt book’ its just his book. personally, i think dan’s book is gonna be more like connor franta’s second book ‘note to self’ or dodie’s book ‘secret for the mad’ which are like more freeform compilations of writing, anecdotes, poetry, and photography. which i just think is really cool and unique and in character.

in terms of any sort of backlash, the book industry has changed since the whole yt book thing was a huge deal. youtubers have published books and its mostly gone under the radar lately. books are not a super profitable business, the mark-up is not a lot and publishers take most of the cut. dan’s audience isnt what it used to be, it possible in the mainstream book community it might be not super popular. creators like dan are not big news anymore, so although this is his big project and it will probably get some coverage, i don’t think it will be a huge deal outside of the phandom. which i think is fine, i think dans not writing to be on the best sellers list hes writing for himself and us. its cathartic and he wants to share. also dnp started the whole yt book thing. they were one of the first and they paved the way. to me that counts for something.

a lot of yt-ers do stuff besides youtube now and my point still stands that the stigma is uncalled for. media is all connected and why wouldn’t you try new things or take cool opportunities to see what happens. youtubers are an amazing, creative, talented bunch. look at all the tv show hosts who have been lost af trying to produce their own stuff from home while yt-ers have been doing that for years and thriving. i know im biased and also going into this industry, but anyone who is mad at people for trying to advance their career in a new direction or to live their dream can eff off.

my nightmare last night was about the phandom reaction tbh. we’re having fun now, but we’re on own worst enemy. people like to hate dan no matter what he does. people are gonna be mad that it’s ‘just a book’ (which like im sorry have you ever tried to write a book its a Lot), people are gonna be mad its a yt book, its not gonna be for everyone and theres gonna be hate around it. some people are gonna think its bad. to be honest, i don’t care. cause to me i know dan’s been working his ass off for years and i love reading his words, and like i said i think the stigma is uncalled for. i don’t think it can be bad, its dan. and thats not just me being a dannie thats me knowing what kind of person dan is and knowing his entire friggin soul is in this book (cue ‘my soul’ merch theorizing brb) and that i have no evidence to believe it will be a ‘bad’ book.

A general blog and life update.

Hello guys!!!

I'm gonna give my life update first because it's more important and will also have some impact on my blog as well.

A few things:

In the past few weeks, I haven't really been on Tumblr. This is for a number of reasons:

I had family in town. Since none of my family live anywhere near me, it's always a treat when the come down because I never really get to see them (for reference, I live in Colorado and about 90% of my family lives on the east coast).

(This deals with my family being here) I also had to make sure that my slightly older cousin wasn't messing up my room/destroying my PS4/just being overall sketchy while he was hanging out in my room. The reason he hung out in my room so much was because he was playing on my PS4 for almost 10 hours a day.

I had to read a book for school.

I promised my dad I would do something (I don't want to talk about what this thing is online) this summer because I told him that I just wanted to hang out with my friends and write this summer (mainly because I'm depressed and have no energy for anything else) and he said since I'm not getting a job that writing and reading my book for school isn't enough.

I didn't finish that one thing so he took away my phone. That literally sucked because half of my friends are online and being deprived of them made me even more depressed as well as a lot of my coping mechanisms depend on the internet and it's kind of hard to do them when your dad is breathing down your neck 24/7 making sure that you're doing something that you can't do because you're exhausted and depressed.

College (or Uni for you non-American folks lol) is coming up soon! We're actually on the road as of yesterday because I have to be on campus in a few days!

Basically a lot of things have happened. It's been a good and terrible past few weeks. I was trying my hardest not to relapse (and I didn't so that's really good!!!) but doing so ate up so much of my time and energy. I also didn't have any time to really write and I swear, I've been working on this Bucky fic for too long and it will be going up this week. By Wednesday. (Unless something comes up obvs.)

Another few blog things to add:

Times are changing on grandmascottlang. Main changes include/have included: a more multifandom approach to MCU content, not a lot of Good Omens content, revamping and redoing my taglists, significantly less Tom Holland posts.

Let's talk about the last point.

I don't really like the Tom Holland fandom anymore. It reminds me of how toxic the Phandom was in 2015; it's not enjoyable, fun, or easy to navigate through drama anymore. It's more annoying to me than anything else. It's such a bad community because so many people idolize Tom and say he can't do wrong or idolize him and get mad when he makes a mistake and it's just gross to me. I'm not the biggest on celebrity stan culture anymore because it's just unrealistic idolization. I'm sick and tired of it and I need to move on.

This doesn't have an impact on my fics, I will mainly post Peter Parker fics, but I'm moving away from writing TH fics (as I've mentioned before) and I'm staying away from RPFs in general. I'll maybe write them at some point, but I have no interest in writing any now.

Let's talk about Good Omens!

I love Good Omens (probably too much) and I adore the show and the book. I've been finding some really good books to read these past few months and I am so happy that the show became as popular as it did because I am absolutely loving the book!!! I already love the show so much, I've watched through it at least ten times already, and I'm so excited to finish the book!

I realized that I was posting so much GO content on this blog, I needed a sideblog for it. If you like GO, check out @ineffable-crowleys ! I reblog a lot of Ineffable Husbands fics, fanart, graphics, gifs, etc and I'm absolutely loving how kind and easy going the fandom is right now! I love reading theories so all of these headcanons are amazing!

Now let's talk about my taglists.

I had so many inactive accounts on that list as well as people who didn't read my writing at all/people I don't like anymore on it. Last week, I went to Dan and Phil’s Interactive Introverts show with my sister and our friend.  I was excited, not even fully processing it  until I was in my seat.  I was expecting to feel uplifted, light-hearted, and (in a way) fulfilled after the show.  

I’ve been watching Dan and Phil for 2 years now, and while that isn’t a very long time, I (in an unromantic way) fell in love with both of them.  This may be cliché, but all I want is to get coffee with them and ultimately be their friend.  Of course, I knew I wouldn’t get that experience in the least at Interactive Introverts, but I was excited nonetheless.

This experience was even more meaningful to my friend (who had introduced my sister and I to Dan and Phil) because she has been watching them for 5 years now.  Throughout these 5 years, Dan and Phil have gotten her through many tough times and close calls.

I entered the theatre excited; ready to laugh, cheer, and cry.  I left the theatre disappointed in both the phandom, the producers/agents of the show, and the fact that Dan and Phil allowed certain themes in their show to be there (not “getting serious” with the crowd and telling them to stop).

Now, if you haven’t seen Interactive Introverts and plan to, there will be spoilers to follow (though if you have triggers, I implore you to continue reading so you will be prepared when going to the show).

Now, I know the experience varies from show to show, audience to audience, but the atmosphere of the show and the audience that I was a part of was not healthy and honestly triggering for several reasons.

Sexualization of Dan

Of course, we all know and love Dan being his innuendo-self and there were a couple light-hearted jokes, but the audience took it to another level.  Innuendos are funny to a point.  There is a line between light-hearted yet cringy innuendos and sexualization.  If a woman was in Dan’s place, it would be called sexist and harmful; but of course as a white cis male, he’s supposed to be fine.  He wasn’t.  It is not.  Sexualization can happen to anyone and it happened to Dan in Interactive Introverts whenever he would bend over/turn around, use phrasing that in any way could be about sex, and as he was taking the white jumpsuit off after he got of “the wheel”.  Whenever Dan would do or say something that would hint sex, screaming would ensue.  As the show continued, Dan looked more and more awkward and honestly anxious.  I found myself watching Dan’s body language than what was actually happening on the stage.  This behavior from the crowd was not only negative for Dan, but also for those in the audience who have been sexualized (or worse).  My friend who I went with had a hard time watching the majority of the show, almost leaving and instead calming herself by looking at the theatre itself and no longer focusing on the two men who have helped her through depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.  The sexual jokes were not the only part that was triggering for her, but also the simulation section of the show.  In this simulation, the crowd chose between two options for Dan and Phil’s simulation-self and then saw the consequences.  During Dan’s turn, a furry ended up taking him into a cave and made them have sex, and the next morning Dan found himself in a five-way polygamous marriage.  This isn’t funny, this isn’t consensual.  This majorly triggered my friend, who was raped as a minor.  All of this together, is not light-hearted innuendo by any means.  It is toxic sexualization and direct references of non-con.

Susan

So Dan and Phil said that they would love to meet with us all individually, but since that isn’t possible, they decided we should all be called Susan and be of one mind.  At first it was light-hearted and fun, us all clapping at the same time, ect, but they kept drawing it out and referring to it/us/Susan to the point that I got highly uncomfortable.  Dan and Phil are usually big on individualism and free-thinking, and “Susan” did not reflect those values at all.  Cult jokes only go so far, and as someone who was raised in one and got sucked into another for a couple years as a teen, “Susan” quickly lost my appeal.  Like I said before, at first it was fun, the reference was funny, but I, we, are not some thing to be named and treated as some hive-mind.  That is not a message which needs to be laughed at and desensitised, especially in the political climate that we are in today.

Dan or Phil?

A little before the intermission, Dan and Phil said that one of them would be sacrificed based on who we like better: Dan or Phil.  This question seems to be a move that PR/marketing would make, to figure out who to make more merch for, or to overall showcase more on social media.  I think this is especially harmful to Phil (though Dan ended up being “sacrificed”/on the wheel for the show I went to) who is greatly underrated.

Overall desensitisation

By allowing Dan to be sexualized, making non-con seem like a funny situation, choosing between two best friends, and erasing individualism for fun, this desensitizes people from multiple underlying issues that haunts society: sexualization of all people, regardless of gender, race, or age; pitting one person against the other for popularity; the fact that not saying “no” does not equate to saying “yes”; and erasure of individualism/a hindrance of personal diversity through attempting to group everyone together in multiple social situations.

This is a problem and no one (of what I have seen) is talking about it.

Now, saying all this doesn’t mean that I personally hated the show and regret going, but this needs to be discussed.  I felt bad for the parents who were there with their impressionable tweens/teens, and I hope they realize what happened is not a reflection of who Dan and Phil are, because it definitely isn’t.

I cried at the end when Dan played the piano while they were both singing.  I cried not only because a) for a second there I was scared I payed $90 to see a dog video as the finale, b) Dan and Phil both have really nice singing voices and when they have a duet it’s  beautiful, (c Dan playing the piano all around the world (what about that isn’t an amazing experience for him and a triumph over his childhood nightmare of a piano teacher?), but I was also crying because d) I wanted the atmosphere that had come over the theatre the instant the piano came on stage to be the atmosphere for the entirety of the show.

In short, I greatly want to support Dan and Phil, and I was glad to do so through going to Interactive Introverts and buying merch.  But I do not support several of the themes that were displayed as funny, when in fact they were triggering and do harm to society.  I hope this problem with Interactive Introverts doesn’t get swept under the rug, but instead is called out by Dan and Phil at least once.  I love these two men and I hope the best for them, but the reason for that is because of their values and what they teach their audience.  Hopefully the future contains the content that’s in their livestreams and videos, and not what I witnessed for the majority of Interactive Introverts.

i think part of the thing for phannies(me im talking about me) is that yeh, we used to freak out over rumors, but over times its just gotten more fun? like dnp used to commuicate pretty well so all rumors were teased by them or debunked by phandom fbi within hours. now, its more like rumors add drama, and since theres already so much tension within the phandom and some anger towards dan, everything is stepped on really lightly. btw i realize that ive sent a lot of shit and sorry... but you asked for my opinions so ima keep talking, feel free to ignore me... ive definitely been in other fandoms before, but and this is legit nothing like anything else. for one there is one pairing(unless you count the crack ships and fetus phan twitter interactions). i think part of the lesser reaction is because we dont want to get our hopes up. which is kinda a pessimist perspective.

my opinions on the book? im happy for dan, and im glad to know hes been doing SOMETHING. and i def know that inwill buy the book whenever it comes out. but i also know that it could be a mistake, put under the wrong author. or it could fall through. something ig i go by, is that if its not straight(ha) from dan(or phils) mouth the phandom is going to question the source and even the information. plus i think the excitement for the book is being overshadowed by the fact dan doesnt talk to us.

i love both dnp with my entire heart and the phandom helped my learn, grow and accept myself. but the rumor mill has been beaten to death and i think by this point people are wayy to tired and frankly apathetic to freak out. but know interally, everyone is excited to some degree"

firstly anon you go OFF writing an essay about how you feel, I love to hear people's views! this actually helped me a lot to put this into perspective.

It's kind of sad that the phandom got to a point that we can't just be happy about stuff, and I can see there's a lot of baggage and stuff holding everyone back. I think this is something we should all work on honestly, because a idol-fan relationship is STILL a relationship and it needs to be healthy, I guess?

but honestly this happens in every fandom. I just feel like phannies are the ones that hold the most grudges. There's so much fucked up stuff that happened in my other fandons and that we were able to let in the past.... I feel like phannies need to to breath a little and remember why we're all here.

(even if it's extremely difficult, I know for a fact it is. I was "out" of the taylor swift fandom for literally a year to reflect on everything that was happening and it was the healthiest choice ever.)

but I think as soon as this is actually announced (if it's even true) we'll be all collectively excited again. sure, there was some drama surrounding dan's coming out too, but at the end we were all just... happy. I hope whatever this project is can bring us together like that again, even if it doesn't lasts. I'm excited!

Okay AAAAARGH when will this deadly illness end, srsly I REALLY want to play some goddamn games! At least I'm not in as much of a full on migraine meltdown as I was yesterday tho.. Okay, so his name is Iggy and he's Super Sweetheart, and I'm trying to pin down a Dad Theme for him, like we have the sporty one and the goth one and etc. I was thinking maybe he could be nerdy videogames dad? Or perhaps veterinarian dad, but apparently one of the dads works in a pet shop or something so that's kinda already taken... Also for NO REAL REASON I was thinking maybe he could be GHOST DAD Just cos I've been rewatching Danny Phantom and getting into the phandom again and thinking about all the wasted potential and stuff. Different ways the ghost worldbuilding could have worked, and I really like the idea of what if it was about helping the villain ghosts move on instead of just fighting them. A more slice of lifey emotion-focused version! And I was thinking about maybe a plot where Iggy came back as a ghost to protect his daughter, but he doesn't remember that he died, so its still kinda a similar 'half ghost half human' plotline but also with more ghost? COS I LIKE GHOST Also I like ANGST and HUGS ANYWAY, regardless of my random ideas for an original story to stick him in after I finish this game, I'm still super excited to play him in this game!!! Iggy will romance all the dads! Iggy will be dad to all the children's!! Iggy may or may not be a wraith from the underworld who wears cute kitty shirts!!! Oh man seriously imagine him dating Robert and its like 'let's go hunt for cryptids' *giant arrow pointing at Iggy right behind him* Or Iggy failing horribly at being goth compared to Damien, holy shit XD I love Iggy already, Iggy is my new best friend I HAVE TO FIND A STORY FOR THIS OC Oh oh oh and I know the game kinda doesn't have an option for this, but I was thinking maybe the protagonist's mysterious dead spouse could actually be Iggy's ex-wife? I started thinking up a whole backstory for him! His marriage with her was a short and failed one, but they remained bffs after the divorce and she was like the ultimate wingman trying to help him find a new love. And she was like an aunt to the family, even though she was Amanda's biological mother. She was still an important part of her daughter's life even though they didn't live together anymore, and Iggy still mourns her just as much as any of the other protagonists do. I just feel like it'd be even more sad in the intro this way. All we know about mystery deceased spouse is that story of how when Amanda was born/adopted, protagonist was freaking out thinking a car accident was a bad omen and they held his hand and told him everyone would be okay. And it was. I kinda think that'd be even more meaningful if they did end up breaking up afterwards, but things still WERE alright. They survived that 'disaster', they survived realizing they weren't made for each other, they still remained important people in each other's lives. That memory wasn't tainted by what happened, it was just recontextualized, kinda. So even though it feels impossible to live without her, Iggy and Amanda can survive this too. I'm sure that's what she'd want to say! Also, I just think we need to see more positive portrayals of ex-boyfriends and girlfriends in fiction. Its better to admit that things aren't working out, rather than stay in a loveless relationship. And it doesn't always have to be the end, it doesnt always have to be violent and horrible, you don't have to stop caring about each other as friends! And joint custody can totally work out, and doesn't have to be a horrible child support argument using your poor kid as some sort of betting chip... (Sigh.. My mum and dad..) SO YEAH! THATS MY THOUGHTS! And I think I wanna keep this ex-wife character even if I rewrite Iggy into his own story! Not sure about how to write a kid more endearing than Amanda, tho!

hey guys small reminder that not everyone that can go shirtless has to.

And twisting someone’s words is a big no-no. I realize Butch has done some bad and questionable things in the past and he’s made mistakes; we all have, but that doesn’t give you the right to jump on him and twist his words when he’s trying. The man is trying to talk to us again; to interact with us and he seems excited to do so. Shouldn’t we just give him a chance? He didn’t have to post so much about Danny in the recent months. He didn’t have to have the short we got centered in on Danny Phantom. He didn’t have to ask us to make fanart of the Unworld for him. He didn’t have to create Danny at all. If anything, you all should be grateful you’ve been given such great characters to love and make headcanons about.

Let’s all just settle down and say we both owe each other an apology; some of us more so for recent events on such a large scale than Butch. Even after some of us jumped on him about the 107 facts about Danny Phantom, he still had the promo for Bunsen centered in Danny’s world. The opening was centered on Danny Phantom characters, the majority of the lines by Danny Phantom characters- he didn’t have to do any of that.

 Again, I’m not saying Butch is perfect, or the phandom is perfect; neither of us are and we never will be. All I’m saying is maybe we should give the man a chance. Maybe we should hear him out fully and not twist his words. Maybe we should call a truce throughout the fandom and just stop this senseless aggression. It’s a waste of energy and it’s wrong to force headcanons on someone.

 Let’s all just chill out and be happy we finally got Danny, Sam, Tucker, and Jazz animated with their original voice actors again. We can be upset that the characters are a little off but remember; it’s been 10 years since they’ve been animated like that. 10 years. People are bound to forget small details like shading Danny in his ghost form and adding the glow or how Sam’s hair went, I know not drawing one of my characters for such a long while would cause me to forget how some minor details go.

It's pretty sad if it's gotten to the point where people hear that dan and Phil are going on tour and get disappointed. I ship dnp as much as the next guy but heckkk!!! I want to meet/see them so bad!!!!! Also I actually think the announcement is new merch cuz the sale on the dnp shop was intended to get rid of things to make room for new stuff- which still! Exciting!

Yikes I didn’t even see this, but I assume this was before “tHe FrIdAy AnNoUnCeMeNt” so yeah It made me quite sad that people would only accept coming out as the solution But if you think about it, it might make a bit of sense, since many people aren’t able to go see them cause they can’t afford it / their parents won’t let them / they live in countries they won’t visit, while a coming out would have been something that everyone in the phandom would be a part of.Now that we know it’s a tour, I think the opinions are way different Now even people who said that it’s “obviously” a coming out are happy about it, even ones who won’t get to meet them say they’re happy for people who will see themI personally am extremely excited because I will meet them, and I’m happy for everyone else who will be able to go to the show!
