Unlocking the Potential of CBD Oil: A Natural Remedy for Wellness
Tumblr media
In recent years, CBD oil has gained significant attention for its potential health benefits, leading many to explore this natural remedy as a way to enhance their overall wellness. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the many compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its counterpart, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn't produce the "high" associated with marijuana. This quality has made CBD oil a promising option for those seeking relief from various ailments without the side effects typically associated with traditional medications.
CBD oil is commonly derived from industrial hemp, a cannabis variety containing minimal THC levels. Its popularity can be attributed to its potential to alleviate a range of symptoms, such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and even epilepsy. Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including pain perception, mood, and immune response.
Furthermore, CBD oil is available in various forms, including tinctures, capsules, topicals, and edibles, allowing users to choose the most suitable method for their specific needs. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating CBD oil into your wellness routine, especially if you have underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications.
While the potential benefits of CBD oil are promising, it's important to remember that the industry is still evolving, and research is ongoing. As more studies are conducted, our understanding of CBD's full range of applications will likely expand. For those looking for a natural alternative to traditional treatments, CBD oil may hold the key to unlocking a healthier, more balanced life.

Reason For Hope Or Just Hype: What Are The Effects Of CBD?
CBD is popping everywhere these days. CBD oils, drinks, edibles, and topicals with their potential benefits and healing properties make more and more people recognise the effectiveness of this unique compound. In more recent years scientific research, public interest and media reporting have focussed on the legal status of cannabis and CBD. Advocates of the benefits of CBD oil have set out to educate the population on the differences between medical cannabis, cannabis-derived products such as CBD and cannabis used for recreational purposes.
A recent report by the BBC suggested that consumer interest in products containing CBD have soared recently with an estimated 11% of the population having tried a CBD product in the last year. The Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC) suggests that the consumer market has exploded with an estimated £300,000,000 currently being spent on CBD products and that at its current rate of growth it will be worth £1B by 2025. But why is CBD so special, and what effects can CBD products offer the users? Let’s delve into this question in his article.
First Thing First: What Is CBD?
Media interest and speculation around CBD and cannabinoids could lead us to believe that the use of cannabis products as medicine is relatively new. On the contrary, the therapeutic use of marijuana can be traced back to 2900 BC.
Cannabidiol (or just CBD) is a natural compound that works with the body’s endocannabinoid system to provide various health advantages without addiction or changes in a state of mind. CBD oil is delivered from the flowers of the cannabis plant and does not contain the psychoactive substance THC. CBD infused products can be sold in the UK as a food supplement but not as a medicine and is regulated by the Food Standards Agency as a novel food.
Several high-profile cases such as Billy Caldwell and Alfie Dingley, both children who suffered from refractory epilepsy brought the issues to the forefront and prompted a change in the medicinal cannabis law. This change also helped to raise the profile of over the counter CBD products and set out guidance for the quality and effectiveness of these products.
Health benefits and relief from unwanted symptoms of certain illnesses are well documented, and the list is growing. Life-altering diseases such as epilepsy, neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain and symptoms associated with autoimmune disease such as MS and chronic fatigue syndrome, acne, cancers, Type 1 Diabetes and mental illness among many others. Growing scientific evidence suggests that CBD has a number of effects that help to relieve symptoms associated with these conditions. So, what are the potential positive effects of using products infused with CBD?
Relief For Nausea
Chronic nausea can be associated with conditions such as migraine, medications such as chemotherapy, gastrointestinal disorders, acquired brain injuries, chronic pain, or emotional disorders.
CBD is proven to interact with serotonin releasing receptors, and when given in relatively small doses has been shown to help soothe both nausea and vomiting. What’s more, CBD can be effective in reducing anxiety, which can help patients manage the angst of chronic nausea. When you consider that it is evaluated that migraine alone affects between 2.6 and 21% of the population, the potential of the use of CBD as an antiemetic is huge.
Potential Cancer Treatment
Cancer Research UK states that there has been a lot of interest into whether CBD might be useful as a cancer treatment. They suggest that the scientific research done so far has been laboratory research, with mixed results. Therefore more research is needed to know if cannabinoids can treat cancer in people.
However, results have shown that different cannabinoids can cause cell death, block cell growth, stop the development of blood vessels needed for tumours to grow, reduce inflammation, and reduce the ability of cancers to spread. There is a growing body of evidence to believe that cannabinoids can reduce tumour growth in animal models of cancer and that CBD may also enhance uptake or increase potency and that cannabinoids can have advantages in the treatment of cancer-related side effects.
Antiepileptic Effect
In June 2018 The Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies produced a review of the therapeutic and medicinal benefits of cannabis-based products. This review looked at the benefits of using cannabis‐based products toward a variety of different medical conditions, including epilepsy. Following this, the British Paediatric Neurology Association developed guidance on behalf of NHS England.
There is good quality clinical evidence including recommendations from the World Health Organisation that CBD has an antiepileptic effect in two severe epilepsy syndromes (Dravet Syndrome and Lennox‐Gastaut Syndrome) and evidence from open‐label studies and animal studies that it is likely to have an antiepileptic impact on the epilepsies in general.
Remedy For Mental Disorders
Since one in four individuals in the UK suffer from a mental illness at some point in their lives, one of the popular reasons for using CBD oil for anxiety and stress.
Evidence from several study domains suggests that CBD has some potential as an antipsychotic treatment and has also shown promise for treating certain mental health disorders.
Preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviours relevant to multiple disorders with a notable lack of anxiogenic effects. Anxiety is typically treated with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs); however, in recent years, CBD oil has increased in popularity due to its natural properties. CBD has the ability to imitate serotonin by binding to the receptors, which can increase the feeling of happiness and satisfaction, in theory reducing anxiety.
Antioxidant Properties
CBD is also known as a powerful antioxidant. Due to its chemical structure, CBD can inhibit oxidation within the body. Oxidation produces free radicals which can induce a ripple effect by stealing electrons from vital proteins and even DNA molecules. Free radicals and oxidative stress have identified associations with ageing, cancer, and numerous neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Therefore, the ability of CBD to prevent this process can make it an effective method of battling these diseases.
More research is required to confirm that the use of CBD can impede the development of diseases that cause dementia. However, there is evidence that supports CBD’s effectiveness at reducing behavioural symptoms associated with the disease.
Side Effects
In comparison to the many benefits that CBD oil can provide, there have also been some negative side effects associated with its use. At present, research is limited as to the long-term side effects; however, there are unwanted effects which may outweigh the benefits for some people. As previously mentioned, for example, CBD can be used to treat anxiety and depression but could also cause an increase in both. Use of CBD can lead to low blood pressure which in turn lead to dizziness and fatigue.
More trivial side effects are diarrhoea and changes in appetites, which can be explained through CBD link to serotonin. In extreme cases, hallucinations are also a possibility. This, along with the chemical’s association with cannabis, leads to many users being hesitant to experiment with its medicinal qualities. Often, users of CBD can suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and insomnia; however, this is not linked to the addictive qualities of cannabis and THC.
Final Thoughts
It is clear that while there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence surrounding the benefits of CBD, further large scale research is needed to support the regulated growth of the industry and allow people to make informed choices as part of a recognised treatment plan.
Steve Moore, founder of the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis is quoted to say ‘the wave of popularity around CBD, which offers a great opportunity for the UK itself, now needs to be grounded on a strong foundation of research, proportionate regulation and quality standards.’
Additionally, the release of the plans for the new Association for the Cannabinoid Industry Safety Certification programme launched on 31st March 2020 is hoped to give consumers and retailers new confidence in CBD enriched products on the market in the UK.

It’s not only in the world of humans that cannabidiol (CBD) is making waves. More and more pet owners are also starting to use CBD for their pets. Pet-specific CBD products are more commonly found on the shelves of vet offices and pet boutiques alike.
But is it safe? How can CBD help your pet? What do you need to look for when buying a safe CBD product for your four-legged friend? Continue reading to learn more.
CBD for Pets: The Basics
Did you know that not only humans have an endocannabinoid system (ECS)? All vertebrates, including your cat and dog has one. This means that not only do their bodies produce their own endocannabinoids, but they also have all the cannabinoid receptors in place to interact with plant cannabinoids such as CBD.
Because of this, your pet can also benefit from all the potential health benefits of CBD that you do. Just as adding CBD oil to your health and wellness plan may help your body to create a sense of balance, so too does it create a sense of homeostasis in your pet’s body and potentially help treat a variety of different ailments.
Potential Benefits of CBD for Pets
Although research specific to using CBD for pets is in its infancy, the intended effects and benefits of CBD for many of the conditions listed below are well-recorded in both animal studies and human clinical trials.
Because many of these symptoms manifest pretty much the same way in both humans and pets, the anecdotal evidence from pet owners and veterinarians makes sense. It’s just a matter of time before the scientific evidence bears out.
Let’s take a look at the different symptoms and ailments CBD can potentially help your pet with.
1. Anxiety
The anti-anxiety effects of CBD are commonly known and many pet owners are turning to CBD oil for helping their pets cope with things such as anxiety and reactivity. Although studies on treating canine anxiety with CBD are few, human trials have repeatedly shown that it can be highly effective with reducing the symptoms of anxiety, panic disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.
2. Arthritis
One area in which research has grown extensively regarding CBD for pets is with regard to osteoarthritis. One study in particular found CBD to be both effective and safe for treating this crippling disease in dogs. Not only did the study show a significant decrease in pain and an increase in activity in the dogs that were given CBD, but there were also no reported side effects. Researchers suggested a twice-daily serving of 2 mg of CBD per kilogram of weight to aid with pain relief and increased mobility.
3. Epilepsy and Seizure Control
It’s estimated that up to 5 percent of dogs suffer from epilepsy or some kind of seizure disorder. For owners of pets with epilepsy, the condition can be incredibly distressing and debilitating to the animal. CBD for epilepsy and seizure control has been studied extensively, with evidence dating as far back as 1980 showing that CBD has powerful anticonvulsant properties. Luckily, researchers are now also investigating the use of CBD for canine epilepsy, with a preliminary study from Colorado State University in Fort Collins showing that CBD can significantly reduce the frequency of seizures.
4. Inflammation
Inflammation is a major cause of pain for many animals. In an attempt to help relieve symptoms of pain, veterinarians typically prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, these have recently come under the spotlight due to concerns around their safety, particularly in aging dogs that have compromised immune systems. Long-term use of NSAIDs are associated with a variety of side effects including issues with the gastrointestinal tract, liver function, renal failure and even death. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are widely reported in scientific literature, which can make it a safe and side-effect-free alternative to NSAIDs for many pet owners.
5. Pain
For many pet owners, CBD seems to be a safe and effective option for helping to relieve painful conditions. Just as with humans, pets can suffer from something known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency in which their bodies become deficient in cannabinoids. This causes the ECS to become unbalanced, not only reducing the body’s ability to effectively deal with pain signals, bu also inducing many of the ailments that cause pain. By supplementing with CBD, cannabinoid levels are increased, which helps to restore balance to the ECS system while simultaneously helping to reduce pain.
What to Look for When Buying CBD for Your Pet
CBD products for pets come in a variety of forms. These can range from CBD oils and tinctures, to CBD-infused treats and even topicals such as gels and creams. A topical might be great for localized relief, and a CBD treat might be the easiest way to give your pet a daily serving of CBD.
However, it is important to choose a product that is safe. Animals, in particular cats and dogs, are highly sensitive to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and it can actually be toxic to them. When purchasing CBD for you pet, take the following tips into consideration:
1. Buy a product made specifically for pets.
Human products can include other ingredients and flavorings that might be harmful to animals.
2. Buy organic.
Refined or poor-quality products can contain harmful toxins, heavy metals and pesticides that are sometimes used in industrial hemp farming.
3. Consider a high-quality broad-spectrum product.
As mentioned, even a little bit of THC can be toxic to animals, so avoid a full-spectrum extract. However, with all the THC removed in broad-spectrum extracts, your pet can still benefit from what is known as the entourage effect.

Natural Pain Relief
Cannabis for Natural Pain Relief
Cannabis is an excellent treatment option for many serious medical conditions, from multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, to epilepsy and cancer. But beyond debilitating diseases, many people use medical cannabis strains for natural pain relief: headaches, muscle aches from exercise or desk jobs, and overcoming temporary pain from broken bones, sprains, and skin conditions. In this article we’ll spend some time exploring cannabis’ ability to tackle the day-to-day pain we all face.
Why Cannabis Eases Pain
Medical cannabis is a good form of natural pain relief because it interacts seamlessly with the body, providing the same painkilling properties of over-the-counter painkillers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen without synthetic chemicals and frightening side effects.
Cannabis contains more than 80 different compounds known as cannabinoids. These include the familiar (and best-researched) compounds THC and CBD. When cannabinoids enter the body through the bloodstream (if you smoke or vaporize) or through the tissues of the mouth or stomach (if you use tinctures or edibles), they begin immediately participating with the body’s endocannabinoid system. That’s right – our bodies have an entire system that plays well with cannabis. It’s really quite incredible.
Cannabinoids like THC and CBD bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body, with which pain-related neurotransmitters also interact. If a cannabinoid has filled the spot that would usually belong dopamine or serotonin, that neurotransmitter cannot alert the brain to pain at this site. If cannabinoids fill enough of these receptors, no pain messages are received by the brain, no pain is recognized, and natural pain relief is achieved.
Natural Pain Relief from Minor Conditions: The Research
Headaches and Migraines
A recent US study examined 121 adult subjects, who used cannabis (both inhaled and eaten) over a number of years to treat their migraines. On average, the group’s migraine frequency dropped from about 10 per month to 4.6. More than three quarters of the subjects confirmed they experienced fewer migraines each month, and more than 10 percent found the treatment stopped their migraines altogether.
Other anecdotal evidence suggests that if cannabis is consumed through a fast-acting method like vaporizing or tinctures as soon as the patient feels the migraine setting in, the plant can reverse the pain and eliminate the migraine all together. Even if cannabis can only lessen the pain, it is well-known for its ability to curb nausea as well, another common symptom of migraines.
Broken Bones
If you’ve recently suffered a break, sprain, or twisted ankle, the CBD in cannabis could prove an excellent natural pain relief treatment. Furthermore, an animal study in Israel has suggested CBD may even expedite the healing process.
Skin Conditions
Cannabis doesn’t just tackle pain inside the body; it also addresses irritations on the skin, which can result in painful rashes or extremely sensitive spots (as with Shingles). While ingesting cannabis could help, many patients turn to topical products for targeted natural pain relief from skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.
A 2013 animal study indicated cannabis can curb skin pain and inflammation from allergic reactions and other causes. Creams and balms containing CBD and THC can also ease muscle and joint pain caused by working out or sitting for long periods of time.
