its interesting that i mostly see “Fighting!” written in subtitles and text in videos as “파이팅!” but pronounced out loud as “화이팅!”. both are acceptable i think, they’re just two different ways of rendering the english F sound into korean. using /p/ for /f/ is more common in most other words, and tbh i actually cant think of any other english loanword in korean that uses /hw/ for /f/ besides hwaiting. so paiting makes more sense from that perspective. and yet i feel like i’ve almost never heard someone say “paiting” out loud, “hwaiting” is much more common, i think. and even then, in subtitles it’s often written “파이팅”. not in the english subtitles lol, i mean in the korean text that appears onscreen in a lot of videos, i guess underneath the youtube english subs haha. you know what i mean. but yeah that’s interesting, idk the exact reasons why but it’s something i’ve noticed
#if i had to guess... it just has to do with p- being more common to transcribe f? maybe hw- sounds too japanese?#japanese doesnt have hw- per se but the japanese f sound only really exists as the syllable 'fu' which comes from 'hu' originally#sorta. its a little more complicated than that lol. but anyway hw- does sound more like the japanese f than the english f#(japanese f uses just your lips. english f uses lips and teeth. to do a japanese f sorta pucker your lips a little and blow through them)#(to do an english f you put your upper teeth on your bottom lip and blow)#in other words... japanese f is essentially like a p that didnt close all the way so air is blowing through#and english f is a little different. thats the difference between a biliabial fricative and a labiodental fricative haha#anyway...................... but yeah so if i had to guess... its for one of those reasons... idk#maybe 'paiting' is the prescriptive standard form and 'hwaiting' is nonstandard and looked a bit down on?#so even if its said out loud... the subtitles will say 'paiting'? people might even write 'paiting' themselves and just pronounce it hwaitin#no idea#imo hwaiting sounds more korean just cause its got that hwa syllable that just sounds really cool to me lol but#anyway#kpop linguistics
