I keep wondering how Ice Queendom is being received by people without prior RWBY experience. Existing fans are generally having a great time but half of that comes from the show expanding on character arcs we've already watched and analyzed. It's bonus material.
Does that work for new fans? Ice Queendom is clearly meant to be friendly to new viewers but I can see things that would hold it back. JNPR has even less characterization than this point in the original show, and Blake and Yang aren't getting as much development as Ruby and Weiss. The show quickly delves into the nightmare arc, a sudden departure from the gang fighting and monster hunting set up in Volume 1. I'm not sure if Weiss's inner turmoil will land for people not already familiar with her full character arc.

(my last one was a bit confusing so heres another shot) college au; team rwby all go to the same college, ruby has a commutation disorder and doesn't speak. her team all being childhood friends are basically the only people who understand her. They meet JNPR and all became friends, but little red is still too shy to say a word, especially to the other teams red head, Pyrrha. (a little pyrruby with shy Ruby)
“I promise, everything will be fine!” Yang grinned as she started walking down the hall of the dormitory, looking at a map to find her room. “You’re worried over nothing, Rubes.”
Ruby sighed and started signing as fast as her fingers would let her. As much as she knew everything would be fine, she still couldnt help but be nervous about everything. Sure, she graduated highschool a couple years early, but that still didnt make up for the fact that she was tormented for not being able to speak. And even then, her signing was more or less just a series of gestures that Yang, Blake, and Weiss helped her come up with to communicate.
Yang sighed and took hold of Ruby’s wrists, stopping her for a moment. “I know you have a lot to be nervous about, but you still have me and our friends to help you out. Besides, you and Weiss are sharing a dorm, so you’ll have her with you out with your other two roommates. You’re not going to be alone in this.”
Ruby pulled her hands away from Yang, looking away and making a couple quick gestures before glancing towards a few other students down the hall.
“Tell you what, we can get to your dorm first, help you and Weiss set up, and then find the library, alright?”
Ruby thought about it for a moment, nodding in agreement.
“Good, because if I’m looking at the map right, my room is right here- “Yang pointed to the door to her left, walking down the hall a bit further. “-and your room should be right… here.”
Ruby walked up to the door that Yang stopped at, room 307. She slowly put her keys in to unlock the door, pausing when she heard Weiss’s voice, and three others she didnt recognize arguing. Ruby slowly opened the door, pausing as she watched Weiss argue with three other students: a blonde, a tall redhead, and a girl with orange hair.
“You’ve got the wrong room! There’s no way that they’d let a boy stay here!”
The blonde sighed as he showed Weiss the paper with his room number. “I dont like it any more than you do, but it says Building 3 room 307. Just like yours, Pyrrha’s, and Nora’s.”
“This is unacceptable!” Weiss huffed and took the paper from the boy. “I’m going to go talk to the dorm admissions-”
“We already tried, and as far as they care, Jaune here is a girl,” piped up the shorter girl. “Doesnt matter that he’s been transitioning, all of the documents they care about still see him as a she. But, it wont be that bad.”
Weiss rolled her eyes and shoved the paper to Jaune’s chest before walking off. “Then I’m going to make sure that I can get as much privacy as I can.” She paused at the door, smiling a bit when she saw Yang and Ruby. “Yang! Ruby! You  both made it!”
“Of course we would, snowflake.” Yang pulled Weiss into a hug, holding her tightly. “And I can see you’re already getting into fights.”
Weiss sighed and pulled away. “Seems like there’s five of us living in this dorm. Ruby, I want you to mee Pyrrha, Nora, and… Jaune.”
Ruby nervously looked over to the other three, pausing for a moment as she waved. Jaune, the blonde, was the taller of the bunch, and definitely out of place for a girl’s dorm. Although, after listening to the… discussion… between him, Weiss, and the shorter girl, it didnt seem like there was much that could be done. Either way, he seemed nice enough, a bit timid himself, but not anyone to be worried about.
Then there was Nora. She was the shortest of the bunch, sporting short orange hair, and not exactly looking thrilled about living with Weiss for the remainder of the school year. She gave a friendly smile as she waved back at Ruby. “Sorry about all the yelling, but somebody-” Nora glared at Weiss “-had to make a big deal out of a misunderstanding.”
“Now, now, I’m sure she had her own reasons.” Pyrrha, the redhead, finally spoke up, giving her own soft, yet nervous, smile. “I’m sure we can all get along just fine together without too much trouble.”
Weiss rolled her eyes and started heading down the hall .”Well, I’m going to try again to get Jaune out of here. Boys do not belong in the girls’ dorm!”
“She gets a bit easier to deal with once you get used to her.” Yang walked into the room, extending a hand out to the three others. “I’m Yang by the way. And this is my sister, Ruby. She’s your other roommate.”
Ruby stayed at the door, feeling a bit more nervous as she shakily moved her hands to make a few gestures, trying to make them recognizable to the clothes to try to say hi.
“Isnt she a bit… young to be here?” asked Nora, looking over Ruby curiously.
“Didnt you get called a child earlier, Nora?” teased Jaune.
Nora paused for a moment and sighed. “Only because I’m on the short side….”
“Then you probably shouldnt judge Ruby.” Pyrrha started heading to one of the beds, moving her bags onto one. “And we should all start getting the room set up.”
“Way ahead of you.” Jaune went to his own bags, opening one and pulling out a few rods and a couple curtains. “Although, I think at some point I’m going to need to get a few more privacy curtains to keep from feeling Weiss’s wrath.”
Ruby stood in the doorway for a little longer before quickly moving her bags to a bed and rushing off to find the library.
Pyrrha noticed, watching as Ruby ran out. “Is she okay?”
Yang nodded, picking up her bags and digging through them. “She’ll be fine. Oh, that reminds me.” She fished out a couple of notepads, setting them down on one of the dressers. “These are to help you communicate with Ruby. She doesnt speak and we never got around to actually learning Remnant sign, so she and I came up with a bunch of gestures to help her communicate easier, that way she wouldnt have to carry a laptop or pen and paper with her all the time.”
Pyrrha smiled at Yang a bit, walking over to one of the notepads and looking through it. “We’ll keep that in mind, thank you.”
“No problem. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get my own room set up, and then help the Ice Queen calm down before comes back. Rather not hear about you guys missing any roommates already.”
Jaune chuckled a bit, setting up a couple privacy curtains around his bed. “Eh, I’ve had worse. At least she’s being nicer about it than what I have dealt with.”

Long text post about putting Neo back in RWBY for a story arc
Been thinking about RWBY recently because of BB:CTB, and just some ways I would write the series. One thought came into my head that I figured was unlikely enough to actually happen to be worth sharing.
What if Neo was Jaune's sister?
As best as I can remember, there's nothing on screen that happens to make it impossible. The only times they would have met (during the tournament), Neo is in disguise. We know for a fact Jaune has seven sisters, and Neo's last name is currently unknown. She doesn't come up in conversation much, and team JNPR isn't involved in the Roman/White Fang stuff. And it's not out there to think any time Ruby or Yang mentioned Neo, the connection just doesn't click. Maybe she's got hair dye or dresses unlike what Jaune would have known. Hell, maybe Jaune did know and kept his mouth shut. Point is, it's possible with a little effort. And if the series can muddy how aura works, some rando on the internet can work with a contrivance.
So, fun fan theory with circumstantial evidence. What could someone actually do with this detail? The first thought I had was it provides a possible way for Jaune to have gotten through the vetting system, AND gives us a reason for Ozpin to have missed it, all in one go. With Blake, it's implied Ozpin let her in because her background and credentials were enough that he could trust her, and at worst he'd keep his eye on a potential spy. Jaune doesn't have the kind of history that would appeal to Ozpin's weird brand of preparation. And as funny as that Dumb RWBY comic is (http://eunnieverse.tumblr.com/post/123075118473/i-dont-care-what-his-transcripts-say-that), it's more likely that Jaune would have needed the help of someone with a reputation.
We know Cinder has ties to Lionheart, one of Ozpin's most trusted allies, early enough to pass as one of his students. So Neo slipping in a nonverbal "hey give my bro a letter of recommendation" (or convincing Roman to ask for it) with some implied violence thrown in isn't out of the question. Had Cinder found out, just pretend Jaune is a potential pawn with delicious blackmail attached. Leo writes something convincing about how grades aren't everything, Jaune is in with the knowledge that his recommendation had a moral cost, Team Kill All Humans has a potential mole that they never end up needing to use, and Ozpin is none the wiser. The series wouldn't need this specific of an explanation for what amounts to a bureaucratic loophole, but who looks at Jaune in volume 1 pinned to a tree and goes "yup that's super hero potential right there".
Incidentally, it could also provide a reason Tyrian singles out Jaune as an interesting person. He can't be a maiden and he's not a wizard (at least we all hope), but family of an ex-coworker in his line of work is worth keeping tabs on.
Okay, enough retcon work on logistics. Where could the series actually go with this? First and foremost, Neo has to show up for it to mean anything. Last we saw Neo, she was "gently" floating down from the sky in the middle of a Grimm attack. But any genre savvy supervillain knows that not seeing the body means they may as well be perfectly fine. In addition, Ozpin's initiation for the first year students is to launch them off of a cliff into the forest. Weird as it is, if he's expecting total newbies to survive the fall, why can't Neo?
With Roman gone, there's not much reason for Neo to stick with Cinder's group. The White Fang stopped working with our big bad, Neo isn't a faunus and can't expect any protection under Adam the Edgehog. Plus, she has no reason to actually go after Ruby or Yang. It's not like they're hard to find, and even if they were, Ruby's going off to pick a fight with Salem, the lady who is so scary Raven is afraid to openly confront her. Considering Neo's reaction to even seeing Raven, we can get a sense of scale for how strong she thinks Salem is. If revenge was a motive, from Neo's perspective Ruby's pretty much doing it for her. So Neo, surviving a brush with death and having a hand in the potential end of mankind, goes home to take a nap.
Team Ruby's friends, following the road to plot, wind up getting near Jaune's hometown. Because it was so conveniently on the way. How convenient. The writers can play it off as wanting to show how a non-huntsman supported town thrives. And since this is RWBY, the answer is probably big guns taped to things that probably aren't guns, so yay more anime guns. But now in the hands of a population with no idea that Huntsmen can be made bullet proof (recall Jaune had to be told what Aura is and how it worked after initiation began). Yeah, World of Remnant covered that, but that's a conversation for another day. Point is, we the audience get to see it in action.
The team exploring town eventually would get to Ruby and Yang finding Neo. Or maybe the whole team. I'm trying to keep this from being straight up fanfiction, but since this is a post about justifying a bit of fanservice, let's just say a rematch occurs because they can't escape from crossing fate. Jaune steps in before a winner is confirmed to point out they're fighting his sister, to which Ruby or Yang rebuts with a reference to the attempted murder.
Now the meat of the potential conflict. Ruby and Jaune stand on opposite ends of a very serious accusation. Ruby has to deal with the fact that one of her friends is related to someone who tried to kill her and her family, Jaune has to accept that his sister is part of the reason Beacon fell, and neither one is going to turn on their family for no reason. Any of what happens next depends on what kind of person Neo is.
Yang already had her lesson in forgiveness in V5, but Ruby hasn't been in the same boat. Weiss's reason for leaving the team was very different than Blake's, and Ruby seemed initially more open to forgiving what Blake had done. Having Jaune defend her assailant would be a betrayal of Ruby's trust, but she's fully capable of understanding wanting to protect your sibling.
The group travelling all have different ideas about dealing with dangerous opponents, but have all been more or less following Ozpin. Yet the limits of Ozpin's knowledge are vague, and whether he's willing to take that chance on someone who is okay at best is unlikely after Lionheart. Neo being relateded to Jaune could give Ruby an important moment of leadership by deciding if the two can be trusted. This might even lead to usurping Ozpin and Qrow's choices as the de facto correct path, or casting out Jaune and Neo as potential threats they can't risk having around. Depending on how it's done, it can even tie back to how Jaune's forgery making or breaking the final decision.
There's more I could write on the topic, but it's already pretty long and I just want to get across a couple possible writing choices that could be made with one additional character background detail. There's flaws in my proposal, like why would Neo have aura unlocked and not Jaune, but a decent writer could fill those holes with good character defining or world building moments. I like RWBY, flaws and all, but I'd love to see more use of side characters instead of just making a new one every time the writers needed more conflict. Maybe I'm making assumptions about characters that I shouldn't be making for this proposal to even work. But if the alternative is getting more new characters established for two scenes then never seen again, then what's wrong with a little bit of fanservice.
Tl;dr give us more Neo.

i mean, your issues with rwde seems to be more issues with the ship hate. like obviously ship hate takes a big role in rwde junk because people dont shut up about BB/BS but the rwde tag is way bigger than that. we got a pair of clowns bullying people off their blogs, for instance, because they refuse to observe criticism. also there's tons of jaune hate unrelated to his ships. and then there's the wonderful world of fuck-miles-luna. personally i stay away from ship discourse and the tag's huge.
My issue is mainly the ship one because I only really look at the bee tag. Then I look at things like reblogs and replies and stuff like that where I can see the rwde things. Or even people I follow that tag it.
If I have made it clear that hate about ships is unacceptable, bullying people for any other reason is just as fucking dumb. I’ve experienced bullying over stupid, trivial things and sure while I turned out fine and I don’t care these days, it obviously hurt. Some people aren’t fortunate enough to get through everything unscathed. Bullying is so normal to the world and it’s sad. I’d help people if I could, all I can do is sit here and preach “STOP BEING CUNTS”. I’m well versed in psychology, not qualified to offer actual services, so I can’t in my moral eye help people. If you (you means anybody) feel down, go talk to somebody real and that can understand why. It might not be for you, but you’d be surprised how many people go to therapy, even if they aren’t on the brink. You ain’t alone.
As for Jaune hate, wow how original. Sure he’s gotten a lot of screen time and o m g Miles, everybody’s worst enemy, voices him. Guess what, Jaune’s probably gonna be killed if the Joan of Arc thing is anything to go by. Do people forget the JNPR theory of death? Pyrrha already got hers. Why do people hate a character that doesn’t even have a semblance yet? That is holding his own (kinda) with the rest of these muthafukas.
If anybody hates Miles they’re missing out. Have y'all seen that dude? He’s DEDICATED to his job; his job that includes a hell of a lot more than just writing RWBY and voicing Jaune. He’s got a lot on his plate and I’m fucking sure he couldn’t have time to listen to the negativity.
I also tend to stay away. But I gotta speak up sometimes.

Infiltration Au. Salem wandering the town with a bunch of hormonal teenagers... Does it feel like a babysitting trip or?
Salem dreaded walking around town with a bunch of… hormonal teenagers. However, at least for now, it seemed to be the only way for her to get closer to Ruby. Which caused problem number one…
Aro stared at Ruby’s cloak, feeling a mixture of fear and anger from the sight of the red. Not only that, but the accented red on Ruby’s outfit was starting to… cause issues. “You… need to get rid of that cloak.”
Ruby looked at Aro curiously. “I… dont think I understand.”
“Get rid of your cloak!” Aro slammed her hand on the table, cracking part of it.
Yang frowned and got between Ruby and Aro. “Her cloak isnt doing anything wrong. What’s your problem with her anyway?”
“My problem is that she shouldnt be here!”
“And for once, I think I found someone I agree with,” Weiss piped up. “...even if she is a faunus.”
“And what’s wrong with faunus, exactly?” Aro’s gaze went straight to Weiss, ready to fight things out.
Xanthic sighed and pulled Aro back. “Aro and I are going to go take a walk. We’ll meet back up with you all in a bit.”
Ruby sighed as she watched Aro and Xanthic walk off, starting to feel like this was all a bad idea. “W-well, at least the rest of us can have a bit of fun, right?”
Sitri nodded, pulling out her scroll and looking at the list of all the sights she wanted to see. “This will be great! Oh, when is team JNPR coming around? I have got to get Pyrrha’s autograph.”
“They’re bailing on us.” Blake got up and started walking. “Seems like its just our teams that wanted to do this today. And even at that… more like just six of us.”
“Aro will be fine… I think. Xanthic seems to have her under control. But lets start by heading to the docks.”
Salem watched for a moment as RWBY and Sitri started walking off, heading towards the docks. She took a moment to make a mental note about Aurora and her dislike towards Ruby’s cloak. Maybe something about the color… she wasnt quite sure. Either way, it seemed like something to keep an eye on. And Xanthic… the way she seemed to always be close to Aro… maybe there was something going on between them. And if that was the case, they’d both be easy to use as pawns. Once a few others have lost their usefulness…
“Sapphire! You coming?”
Salem sighed and looked to see Sitri calling out to her. She slowly got up, not looking forward to this. “Yeah, I’ll be right there. Just… wanted to take in a few of the sights.” That’s what these kids were into now, right? Sight seeing and all that. It didnt matter to her, just as long as she could continue passing as a teenager under Ozpin’s nose. She started walking over to her team leader, keeping an eye on Ruby, waiting for any chance to pull her aside. All she needed was one moment…
Ruby stopped as the group passed a dust shop with a couple cops in front of it. “Seems like another dust robbery. I guess Torchwick is still at it…”
“Or it could just be the White Fang.” Weiss kept walking past the shop, not really caring much about it. “They’re always acting up and causing trouble.”
“The White Fang would never do this. Why would they need so much dust? Ruby’s right, it’s probably Torchwick.”
Salem looked at the dust shop, smirking a bit as she saw the signs of Cinder having been around. Seems like everything was going according to plan so far and better yet, no one was able to pin the robbery on just one person. Seems like her piece was effective after all. “Not much we can do about it, unfortunately. Best to have the cops handle it.”
“Or… we could have a stake out.” Ruby smirked a bit as she looked around the area. “We can find another dust shop to watch and we can prove if it is or isnt the White Fang and then stop them-”
“That’s a terrible idea.” Weiss frowned and grabbed Ruby’s cloak to start pulling her. “We’re just students. This is a job for the police.”
“Not like the police are going to do anything about it. And it’s not the Fang.” Blake stepped up to Weiss, glaring at her. “Ruby’s right, we need to watch one of the shops-”
“And then what? The White Fang are terrorists!”
“They’re not terrorists, they’re just misguided.”
Weiss raised a brow at Blake in disbelief.
“Okay, very misguided. But they’d never stoop to stealing dust!”
Sitri hesitated for a moment as she watched Weiss and Blake, still not quite sure what was going on. “Are… are they always like this?”
“Only recently,” Yang said, starting to sound a bit annoyed. “First it was Weiss yelling at Ruby, now she’s yelling at Blake… I swear she hates everyone here.”
Salem kept an eye on Weiss, starting to get a bit more intrigued by her. First the glyphs, and now she was tearing a rift in her own team… she was starting to sound a bit more like pawn material. All she needed was a little nudge. “You know, I think Weiss is right. The White Fang is to blame here. Along with the rest of the problems this kingdom is facing.”
Blake hesitated for a moment before turning to face Salem. “What exactly are you getting at?”
“All I’m suggesting is that Weiss is right. Think about it, ever since the White Fang became more active with their… violent acts… we’ve seen more grimm attacks. More shops are starting to see break-ins or property damage, especially dust shops. And not to mention all those riots the faunus are causing. If it was me, I’d start looking for a way to take them down.”
Weiss smirked a bit as she looked at Salem, glad someone was on her side. “See? Sapphire is making sense.”
“That’s not at all what’s going on!” Blake turned to Weiss, glaring at her. “All we want is to be treated like people, not monsters! And if a little property damage has to be done to send a message, then so be it!”
Everyone stopped and stared at Blake, not quite sure they were believing what they heard. Salem, on one hand, couldnt believe that all of this was working out in her favor .A rift like this would be hard to mend, splitting the team to allow her a bit more access to Ruby.
Weiss hesitated as she processed everything Blake had said. “We?”
Sitri immediately got between Weiss and Blake, shaking a bit. “I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation and we just need to hear her out. Right Blake?”
Blake didnt answer, immediately rushing off and using her semblance to make for a quick escape. Everything had gone wrong quickly, all from just a few words.
Salem smirked, keeping an eye on the rest of the team, looking for other ways to divide them. At this rate, getting to Ruby was going to be easier than she thought.
Weiss huffed as she watched Blake run off, putting her rapier away and walking the other direction. “Well… good riddance I say. Once White Fang trash, always trash.”
“That’s no way to talk to our teammate.” Yang started following Weiss, keeping close behind. “We should be going after her and finding out the full story.”
Xanthic and Aro finally arrived after Yang stormed after Weiss, confused about all the yelling. “Did… we miss something?”
Sitri looked towards Ruby, who was already feeling a bit dejected after being left by her team. “I’m… still trying to figure out what went on.”
Salem smiled and started walking back to the dorm, her mission for the day finished. “We just had a chat about the White Fang. Apparently one of Team RWBY was a member. A pity.”
Aro sighed and looked towards Ruby for a moment, starting to feel a bit conflicted. She still wasnt fond of the fact that she lost to the girl, but having a team split like this…
Xanthic walked up to Ruby and placed a hand on her shoulder. “You dont think it was the White Fang, do you?”
Ruby shook her head. “No, I dont.”
“Want to prove it?”
“I do.”
Xanthic nodded and started walking back to Beacon. “Then come with me. I’m sure we can get down to the bottom of this.”
